Parker: ‘It’s time to stop scaremongering’

It’s time that the scaremongering over Labour’s water policy stopped and the reality around it was recognised, David Parker, the party’s water spokesman, said during a visit to Mid Canterbury yesterday.

He said despite National MPs saying that if Labour got into power it would look to enforce a royalty of up to 10 cents a litre on farmers’ water use, most people realised that the level of levy being discussed was between one and two cents per thousand litres.

That sort of figure would not place an undue burden on the farming community, he said.

“My understanding is this: a dairy farmer with a fully irrigated farm is currently getting about six cents per kilogram of milksolids.

So we’re talking about less than 1 per cent of that revenue.”

Parker said because the amount of money being discussed was not a significant percentage of farmers’ incomes, he did not believe rural towns in Mid Canterbury would suffer a negative economic flow-on from a cut in farmer spending.

He added that any water levies collected will be spent on cleaning up waterways in the area they were raised, rather than going to central government. If there were not projects in that area for the money to be spent on, then the money could go towards areas such as reducing rates or funding roading costs. Money collected in Mid Canterbury would not be spent on Christchurch projects, he said.

Any suggestions the policy was being made up on the fly were rejected by Parker, who said “it’s been out there for six years if anyone had cared to read it”.

“At least we’ve put our plans out there.”

One aspect of Labour’s water policy that has flown under the radar was its plan to amend the National Policy Statement on Freshwater Management to incorporate a recommendation that any increase in farming intensity, whether it be more livestock, a change in land use, or increasing irrigation or fertiliser application, would require resource consent.

Parker made no apologies for this, noting that under ECan regulations or proposals, that was ei-

ther already happening or going to happen in the future.

The general public supported the direction of Labour’s plans for water, he said, pointing to a recent Water New Zealand survey that found that more than three quarters of 5000 people surveyed supported the idea of farmers paying for water. He also noted the survey respondents were evenly distributed through urban, regional and rural areas.

“I think that New Zealanders have an innate sense of fairness and believe that those who use water for financial gain should have to put something back.”

One thing was for sure, he said, which was water was shaping as an important election issue. He was pleased with that, as he be-

lieved that Labour’s policy was the best way to ensure future generations could enjoy their birthright to swim in our rivers.

He was confident that, given the effect new Labour leader Jacinda Ardern was having, the party stood every chance of being able to form a government after the election and put its policies into action.

During his visit Parker also spent time with Ashburton District Mayor Donna Favel and some of her councillors, had a discussion over lunch with Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury leadership team members, visited the Managed Aquifer Recharge Project at Lagmhor and held a public meeting at the Ashburton MSA.

Falloon issues challenge to Labour National Party Rangitata candidate Andrew Falloon has challenged the Labour Party to be upfront about the cost of its water tax to Canterbury.

“In recent days the Labour Party have been all over the place, contradicting one another and themselves over how much their water tax will be.”

Falloon said Labour water spokesman David Parker has said the tax will raise anywhere between $100 million and $500 million, Grant Robertson has at different times said the rate would be one cent per thousand litres, or two cents per thousand litres, while Stuart Nash wants it as high as 10 cents a litre.”

Even taking the most conservative figure Labour’s water spokesman David Parker has suggested, $100 million, the majority of that cost will fall on Canterbury,” Falloon said.

“Given that they’re inexplicably not seeking to charge major water users in urban centres like CocaCola, only rural areas, it’s clear that farmers are their target.”

Sixty-five per cent of New Zealand’s irrigation occurs in Canterbury, so in absence of any clarity from Labour we have to assume that Canterbury’s water tax bill will be $65 million or more,” he said.

“Other than giving a significant portion of the tax to iwi, where will the rest of Canterbury’s water tax go?

“It’s staggering that a major political party would be trying to pull the wool over the eyes of Cantabrians by not telling us how much their water tax will be, and where they’ll take it.

“Just five weeks out from an election it’s time for Labour to be honest with voters on all the taxes they’re not being upfront about: the water tax, higher fuel taxes, a land tax, and a comprehensive Capital Gains Tax.”

Life on a financial tightrope I

t’s Thursday. Belinda Horton checks her wallet. There’s $1.30 in small change and her bank account is almost empty.

She’s not surprised. Belinda and her sons Caleb, 14, and Daniel, 12, are all too familiar with making the best of life on a limited income.

Mother and sons are a close-knit unit and what they lack in money they make up for in their strong and caring family bonds.

But sometimes, living on a benefit while she applies for job, after job, after job, grinds you down, Belinda said.

All it takes is for someone to need a new pair of shoes, money for a school camp or simply a treat and there are just two options – go into debt or go without.

This week Belinda hit another wall. Both sons have broken their glasses.

“My youngest lost the lens out of his and the other one has broken his frames,” she said.

Yes, there’s Winz assistance with glasses for children of families on a benefit, but the $299 she’ll get is available only once a year. That year doesn’t tick over until November.

“Daniel’s having to go to school with just one lens in his glasses and I’ve managed to tie Caleb’s frames together with the wire from a freezer tie,” she said.

Not ideal, but Belinda still has an unpaid bill with her optometrist from a previous visit and there’s no money in the kitty.

The family is paying $320 a week in rent.

Belinda’s not complaining. Her home is warm and it’s a comfortable place to live.

She’s behind on her rent and knows she’s testing the patience of her landlord, but Caleb desperately needed new shoes. It came down to rent or shoes.

Daniel also needs shoes and he’s currently going to school in non-uniform code footwear.

“The kids’ needs come first. I don’t buy anything for myself. I have two sets of clothes, one I wear and the other’s in the wash,” she said.

Living on the breadline is tough and she’s grateful for the extra assistance she’s had from Winz with food grants and money for power, but having to ask for hand-outs is humiliating. She’s desperate to find a job.

“My job was seasonal and it finished in April. Since then I’ve applied for so many jobs, handed out so many CVs and nothing. They tell you to be honest so I say I have two children. Then I hear nothing back.

“The most I get is a phone call that says they’ll keep my CV on file.”

Feeling a bit cash strapped? Wondering how you’re going to pay the bills this month?

You’re not alone. Most of us manage to stay ahead of our debt, but for a growing number of Mid Cantabrians, that is not the case. Their income simply does not cover the cost of living, they’re barely surviving. Ashburton woman Belinda Horton shares with reporter Sue Newman her struggle to meet the most basic needs of her family.

Belinda wants to work. Her experience is in customer service. No-one wants to know.

Surprisingly she’s not bitter, or angry.

“You have to laugh. If I didn’t do that I’d be sitting down crying all the time,” she said.

Trying to keep one step ahead of debt is exhausting. By the time she’s paid rent, petrol and put aside money for insurance, she’s left with $120 a week to feed two growing boys.

When her Working for Families money drops into the bank account it has to top up the food budget, pay power bills and cover everything else it takes to keep a family ticking over.

“You get so sick of only being able to buy five days’ worth of food and then having to scrimp and save to buy more.”

She buys bulk meat packs and spins the contents out over many meals. No-one goes hungry and she says she’s grateful for the budget cooking lessons she learned from her mother.

The family have five chooks and eggs are always a good fallback when they’re out of dinner options.

Her story is not unique, not even remotely uncommon, Belinda knows many families who are in a similar situation to her. Some are single parents, others are families with one modest income. They all want to do the best by their kids, but often doing their best means spending money they simply don’t have, she said.

“There are so many people like me, I’m just someone who’s prepared to talk about it.”

Like many who are struggling, Belinda’s family knows that while the Ashburton District might be thriving, not everyone living here is.

‘An uneven playing field’

Town, country, large or small, Ashburton has joined the national trend of turning spare bedrooms into extra cash.

Through the international online accommodation lister Airbnb, home owners in growing numbers are offering strangers an opportunity to spent a night or more in their homes, sleepouts, spare rooms or baches.

And in doing so they’re creating an uneven playing field in the accommodation sector, says Experience Mid Canterbury’s chief executive Bruce Moffatt.

While Ashburton has just 60 listings, each one of those is in a residential property whose owner pays residential rates and each one could be taking a bed night away from a commercial accommodator who pays commercial rates, fees and charges. That meant as an organisation that did its business promoting tourism, EMC did not support Airbnb, Moffat said.

“And that’s for the simplest reasons, we have some fantastic four star plus accommodators who market hard and work hard for their business.”

On the flip-side, Airbnb did have value at times, such as during big events when commercial accommodation was under pressure, he said.

Dozens of advocates hoping to highlight that “everyone matters” will hit the road next month and march from Ashburton to Christchurch.

Tiger Jaka put down

Experience Mid Canterbury chief executive Bruce Moffatt believes home owners listing with Airbnb are creating an uneven playing field for commercial accommodators.

“Anyone who stops in our district is fantastic, but we certainly don’t support Airbnb; it would be remiss of us to say ‘go and stay there’.”

Ashburton’s listings were low when measured across the number of homes in the district, but some parts of New Zealand are counting Airbnb properties as 10 per cent of their housing stocks.

Queenstown tops the list with one in 10 houses listed with statistics showing they are earing homeowners an average of $8000 extra cash a year.

The national average is much

lower, $2900 for the rest of the country, excluding Auckland where the average is $3200.

If one homeowner, Di Thomas, is typical of the Ashburton experience, people are not exactly queuing on the street for accommodation.

She and husband Steve have turned a spare room in their villa into accommodation that comes with access to a kitchen. Thomas says she’s been far from overwhelmed with guests.

The Thomases signed up with Airbnb after having a great experience as guests while overseas.

“We got into it when we were in Italy and England. We stayed in Airbnb and loved the experience.”

Thomas said she’d seen people staying on boats, in tents and even a converted woodshed.

“We’re absolute converts to this,” she said.

“You never know who is going to turn up.”

For the year to March there were 20,000 Airbnb listings across New Zealand, still a small percentage in terms of total guest nights – 1 million compared to 38.5 million in the commercial accommodation sector.

Registrations for the event are still open, but organisers hope the final number of participants will be into the hundreds.

“We’re expecting different people to join in at different points,” Rhydian Thomas of the PSA said.

The planned route takes participants from Ashburton to Rakaia on September 1, to Rolleston on September 2 and into Christchurch on September 3.

The march will culminate with a rally in Cathedral Square in coalition with Yes We Care Christch-

urch, and feature a number of speakers.

PSA national secretary Glenn Barclay said the Hikoi was inspired by a similar initiative by the British Association of Social Workers, who marched one hundred miles in April to highlight the damaging effects of austerity on people and their communities.

“Social workers see what life is really like on the frontline – they see inequality, unmet needs in housing and health, poverty and homelessness,” Through the Hikoi Whakaara organisers hope to highlight the

“big four” problems challenging Kiwis – poverty, housing, inequality and health funding cuts.

“We want to see the current Government listening to the people at the heart of their communities, and to encourage other political parties to hear these stories so they can make good policy that refuses to paper over the cracks in society,” Barclay said.

He said he hoped for people to join in where they can to help put “real pressure” on politicians as election period approaches. A film maker will also be joining in to document the march.

Auckland Zoo says Jaka, its 18-year-old tiger, has been put down after an inoperable tumour was found. Jaka was born at Wellington Zoo in 2000 and arrived at Auckland in 2013 to join sister Molek and her son, nineyear-old Berani. Jaka had been unwell during the past few weeks and an ultrasound of his abdomen revealed he had a large inoperable tumour in his intestine that had spread throughout his body.

“There is no treatment for this, so euthanising Jaka was absolutely the kindest and only right thing to do,” senior vet manager James Chatterton said.

Hunt for robbers Police are hunting a number of offenders after an armed robbery in South Auckland yesterday.

Inspector Shawn Rutene said that at 1.30pm police received reports of an aggravated robbery at a Kiwibank and NZ Post store in Takanini. “An unconfirmed number of offenders have entered the shop and weapons were presented,” he said. “The offenders have left the shop with an undisclosed amount of cash.” Rutene said no one has been seriously injured. “However one person received minor injuries to their leg.

False alarm Emergency services have called off a search following reports a plane may have crashed in rural Tauranga. A police spokeswoman said a person had called fire and police saying a plane, believed to be a Cessna, was seen going down in the area of rural Welcome Bay. However, the sighting is now believed to have been of a plane doing a low-level gas pipe survey, not a crash.

String quartet weaves a magical tale for students

After their concert at Netherby school left children and teachers visibly moved last year, the New Zealand String Quartet were inspired to visit Ashburton again – this time putting on a rousing performance for students at Ashburton Intermediate.

The talented group took over the hall stage yesterday to perform an entertaining tale written for them by Joy Cowley and composed by Gareth Farr.

A group of 400 students cheered and laughed as the quartet plucked, strummed and narrated their way through the story, set near Ashburton.

Cellist Rolf Gjelsten said it was always moving to hear about children that took up music or were inspired by their performances.

“Those kind of stories make it all worthwhile,” he said.

The performance at Ashburton Intermediate was sponsored by Argyle Welsh Finnigan, and took place as the New Zealand String Quartet make their way down the country on their 30th anniversary nationwide tour, Dangerous Liasons.

The group also performed in Timaru last night, and will play in Dunedin tonight.

Living wage not on agenda

Christchurch City Council might have adopted a living wage as the minimum pay rate for all of its employees, but it’s unlikely the Ashburton District Council will be following that lead.

It’s not something that’s been discussed, said chief executive Andrew Dalziel and he can’t see it coming onto the council agenda, certainly in the short term.

Currently the council has 91 staff earning less than the $20.20 per hour that is deemed

a living wage. That number is taken across all staff and includes youth, students working as lifeguards and learn to swim instructors and district cleaner employees.

Most of those earning less than this were younger people who were in training type positions, he said.

A decision to adopt a living wage policy would be one that was made by district councillors and would add more than $172,000 (seasonalised) to the council’s wage bill.

The city council’s switch to making the living wage its minimum pay rate will affect 470 of its staff and come at the cost of $750,000 a year.

Christchurch is the third local authority to adopt a living wage, joining Auckland and Wellington City.

Timaru District Council has already discussed and decline to pay a living wage to its lowest paid staff saying the cost would be too high for ratepayers.

Each year the Taxpayers’ Union issues a Ratepayers’ Report

and in this it puts the council’s staff numbers at 221.

Of those 21 are listed as earning more than $100,000, 10 per cent of total staff.

The highest paid staff member is Dalziel on $290,000 while mayor Donna Favel is paid $102,705.

District councillors earn a base salary of $27,000 a year or $519 per week.

To earn less than a living wage they would need to put in more than 25 hours each week on council business.

Helping people live healthier lives

You can have your cake, and eat it too, says Ashburton fitness guru Frank Connolly.

You can also have coffee and wine, though you may not want to the more you learn about finding a healthy and sustainable balance between exercise, nutrition and sleep.

Connolly, an Irish martial arts national champion before coming to New Zealand, is about to open a new studio gym in the Allenton mall and it’s all about helping people live healthier lives … whether it is losing 10kg, recovering after a hip operation or simply playing with the grandchildren.

The studio gym will be open seven days a week and has been kitted out with the latest exercise machines and a suite of spin cycles for group classes. But membership will be limited because Connolly wants to make sure everyone gets his own brand of personal attention.

He’s funny and knowledgeable … and to the point. His long-term goal is to help educate people about fuelling their bodies and exercise that is good for them.

The whole idea is that everyone will be engaged and hitting their goals.”

Connolly highlights strength,

speed, stamina, suppleness and skill, which help to make up the new gym’s name, Fit 4 Life.

He says people need a series

of small achievable goals to keep moving forward and to see exercise as part of a puzzle which also includes nutrition, sleep and discipline. The puzzle changes with age, injury or circumstance and involves educating people about what is best for their own bodies – not the models on the front covers of magazines.

It sounds serious, but there’s a healthy dose of fun involved.

Connolly uses his martial arts background to teach others kickboxing techniques. He is a past Irish national champ across all styles; he says he took up the sport to keep fit because he hated running. He went on to join the fitness industry and gain qualifications.

Since leaving the Gym Company two years ago, he has been working as a personal trainer helping people achieve their fitness or rehab goals – and finding plenty of reward in return. His clients have managed to quit addictions to fizzy drink, gain mobility in previously injured joints and lead healthier lives. With cake.

Fit 4 Life will hold an open day for members of the public on Sunday, August 20 (10am to 2pm), before opening officially on August 21. They also have a Facebook page, Fit 4 Life.

Community garden coming to Methven

Come spring, Methven families will be able to stroll down to a local park and pick their vegetables for dinner.

This week the Methven Community Board agreed to fund a community garden project that will see raised gardens built in Chambers Park, joining 10 fruit trees planted in the park earlier this year.

The garden project is the brainchild of local doctor Sophie Febery and a request for land and funding was made at the board’s July meeting.

Methven’s Food Harvest group plans to construct two raised planter boxes and a condition of the approval was that the boxes would be removed if the project was no longer running.

A grant of $428 has been made by the board towards the project.

Ashburton District Councillor Liz McMillan has been involved in the edible garden project and said the park was an ideal central location for the garden rather than having planter boxes in various locations around town.

The gardens will be planted and cared for by the Methven Food Harvest Group and the produce will be free to the community.

Pop-up stall provides a welcome stop-off

It’s over a year and a half since Save the Children shut up shop in Tancred Street, but the Ashburton branch aren’t about to let a lack of premises stop them fundraising to make a difference.

On Friday morning, members festooned East Street with a colourful stall of tasty, useful and cosy goodies for sale.

“We’ve got everything from baby clothes, cards, baking, hats and gloves,” Save the Children president Liz Quaid said.

The offerings had been baked, knitted and crafted by volunteers and supporters of the charity, and provided an enticing stop-off for passers-by.

“We did a pop-up stall last year and that worked well,” Quaid said.

“Although we don’t have the shop anymore we are doing what we can.”

All Blacks security guard not guilty All Blacks security guard Adrian Gard has been found not guilty of making up claims he found a bugging device at the team’s Sydney hotel a year ago.

Downing Centre Local Court Magistrate Jennifer Atkinson yesterday said there was not enough evidence in the circumstantial case to convict Gard of making a false representation resulting in a police investigation in August last year.

All Blacks security consultant Adrian Gard had faced a charge of making a false statement to police, but pleaded not guilty.

He was accused of making up claims about finding a bugging device at the team’s Sydney hotel last year.

Gard, who has been acting as a security guard in Australia for the All Blacks for more than a decade, claimed to have found the listening device secreted in a chair in the team’s meeting room at the InterContinental Hotel on August 15 last year.

The All Blacks waited for five days before calling in the police because they had hoped not to get the media involved.

However, this angered the

Wallabies who felt the announcement was ill-timed and caused an unnecessary distraction.

Although the All Blacks never accused Australia or the Wallabies of any wrongdoing, the incident soured relations between the team following speculation on social media.

Earlier yesterday, All Blacks captain Kieran Read, giving evidence on the phone from his room at the InterContinental Hotel in Double Bay, told the Downing Centre Local Court he believed security guard Adrian Gard was “honest and loyal”.

Read said he and the New Zealand team respected “Gardy” for his professionalism and the great way he did his job without hurting the team’s “brand”.

Read told the court he had known Gard since 2009 and described him as a “pretty good man”.

He said Gard had been part of the All Blacks group for quite a long time and he had always been completely honest.

“The team sees him as very professional,” Read said.

More than 1000 people turned up in wheelchairs, pushchairs, mobility scooters and on foot to link hands around Buller Hospital yesterday.

So many came they formed a second ring in parts.

They raised their hands in the air, cheered and clapped, and some sang Stand up for your rights.

The Hands Around the Hospital demonstration was a passive demonstration against the Government’s plan to replace the hospital with an integrated family health centre (IFHC).

The IFHC would be about a quarter the hospital’s size, with about a quarter as many beds.

Sheila Oldham and her husband Jack said the hospital was a better bet than the IFHC. “We’ve put money into the place – all the facilities,” Mrs Oldham said.

The proposed boiler house site for the IFHC was ridiculous, she said.

“It’s absolutely stupid to build it there.”

Margaret van der Jagt said the hospital should stay.

Barry Shand agreed. “It’s costing us more to build a hospital we don’t need anyway.”

Margaret and John Hill said they were there to support the hospital.

Mrs Hill said the Government, not ACC, should pay for the new IFHC. “Why are we being double taxed?”

The Buller District Council should not put any money into the new building, she said.

Ian Roger said the IFHC plan wouldn’t work. “I think it needs to be relocated and scratched and re-done properly.”

There was nothing wrong with the current hospital which could be build on to, he said.

Linton Harmon agreed. He said the current hospital had come through the 1968 Inangahua earthquake virtually unscathed.

Laurie Smith said the Government should give Buller the $12 million planned for the IFHC and let the community build what it needed.

Ross Eddy said losing the hospital would mean losing part of Buller’s identity.

Nancy O’Dea said the hospital did a good job. The IFHC proposed would be a downgrade, she said.

Chris Townrow said she had been a patient in the hospital. “I hope it’s here until I bloody die. It’s what we need.”

Ruth Vaega said Buller deserved a decent hospital. “As we age, what’s going to happen to us? We can’t be centralised out of our hospital, we just can’t. I’m very angry about it, actually.”

Sue Gibson and her mother Maureen Clark agreed.

“It’s our hospital, we need to save it,” said Mrs Gibson. “I have family that live here – young ones that are going to be having children ... they need to be safe.”

Older people needing hospital care at the end of their lives shouldn’t have to leave Buller for it, she said.

Mrs Clark agreed: “They need family around them.”

Andrew Basher said he had turned up to support the community. “We need a good medical facility. We have an ageing demographic. They’ve paid their taxes for years.

We need something that’s first world standard.”

Two district councillors, Robyn Nahr and Greg Hart, said the Government should build a hospital that met Westport’s needs.

“What I think we should do is, form a building committee and the Government should give us the $12m,” said Cr Nahr. “If we can’t build it for $12m to suit our purposes there would be something wrong.”

Cr Hart said the Government should be putting up the $26m originally proposed for a decent hospital.

Phyl Phipps, one of the demonstration organisers, was delighted with the turnout.

better job’ W

hen it comes to fundraising, Margaret Rickard has to go to the top of the class. Over a seven-year period she’s been the driving force behind raising almost $10 million dollars.

She won’t see a cent of that herself and she couldn’t be happier.

But this week, Margaret called time on her fundraising efforts on behalf of the Advance Ashburton Community Foundation.

It’s time to hand over the reins to someone with new ideas and that’s not going to be easy she admits; working in the philanthropic sector gets under your skin and into your heart.

“I see that one person can have a huge impact, but you have to make room for the next person to come in with their flair and put their stamp on it,” she said.

The foundation was formed in 2003 and for seven years its board was the driving force that established its framework, sold the concept to the community and started accumulating bequests and donations.

Seven years down the track, the groundwork was done and it was time to let the foundation fly by appointing an executive officer to become its public face.

That person was Margaret and for her the timing was perfect.

“I’d been involved in agriculture industry training for 17 years. Twelve of that was locally but the last five was as part of a national project. It was a great job but I was travelling two or three days every week,” she said.

And that time away from home meant she lost touch with her community and the organisations dear to her heart.

“I found myself desperately wanting to be involved with my community again,” she said.

Margaret was aware of the foundation and its work, and admired its philosophy. She applied for the newly-created executive officer position and when it was offered, had no hesitation in saying yes.

“The board has always had a very important role. They’ve had

to be very hands-on and very involved at much more than a governance level. Neil (Sinclair) had done such a wonderful job.

He had the determination and the belief that it would work,” she said.

While Margaret became the foundation’s front person, its board was still passionately involved. She took over the role of promoting Advance Ashburton and working with current and potential donors, and that, she said, brought her into contact with some pretty wonderful people.

“Those amazing donors are people who want their community to be a better place. They come from all walks of life and they’re pretty special people.”

Margaret’s work has focused on creating awareness, letting people know about the foundation and how they can make a donation or leave a bequest.

“I just give them the information and let them make their minds up. I think people trust us now and they know if we’re involved with a project it will work,” she said.

It took time for that trust to become established, however, as in its early days it was a concept with no track record and very little in the way of assets.

Since the foundation was established it has accumulated $10.4 million in assets. It hit a high at just shy of $12 million, but $1.5 million was tagged to be given to the Ashburton Hospital rebuild.

The asset base continues to grow. Money is invested and interest earned given in scholarships and grants.

And it’s not just for the rich.

Advance Ashburton will accept donations of any size.

“You could give $5, it doesn’t matter. Every amount is welcomed.”

Those of $50,000 or more can be set up as a named fund and donors can indicate where they’d like interest to be distributed.

Amounts of less than this become part of a general fund that supports health, arts or heritage projects.

WHAT IS ADVANCE ASHBURTON? Advance Ashburton is a Community Foundation whose primary goal is to provide a simple, effective and long-lasting way for individuals and families to help charitable causes in the Ashburton District.

It was established in 2003 with the aim of creating a perpetual charitable trust that would accept donations to invest and distribute the income to worthy community organisations and causes within the Ashburton District.

The foundation has three main tasks: ■ Raising funds from donations and legacies ■ Investing funds to retain the capital and generate income ■ Providing grants and scholarships to the local community from this income.

can become involved in what is going on’. We visit our donors regularly to keep contact going, that’s important to us.”

People give for many reasons, but often because they say their community has been good to them over the years. Others may not have any direct descendants and want their money to benefit people in need.

When funds are distributed, recipients are told where the money has come from and, with scholarships, donors meet recipients and often keep in touch over the years.

“There’s such a huge amount of feel-good stuff. It’s been a wonderful job, a whole group of people working to make a big difference in the community.”

As she signs off as Advance Ashburton’s first executive officer Margaret rates the job as one of the best she’s ever had.

“It’s been an utter delight; you couldn’t ask for a better job.

There’s been so much pleasure and so many rewards in watching it grow and do so much good.”

Election no longer a one-horse race Matt Markham

W

e are about to round the final bend but the race to parliament is now a long way from being the onehorse race it once looked.

Parliament stepped down yesterday until the election and those who walked out of the hallowed walls of the Beehive will have done so with absolutely no definite idea on who might be in the big chair when they return.

A month ago, National looked set for a close to landslide success.

Labour couldn’t get its own house in order, the Green Party was battling with a few identities and Winston was just doing what Winston does best, sitting back and watching it all unfold.

But it’s all happened since then.

The Ardern effect has hit following her rise to the leadership of the Labour Party and it finally looks like it is ready to seriously push its blue rival to the bitter end after an extended period of the doldrums.

The Green Party, which seems intent on some form of selfimplosion, is the worrying face of the political world, now.

Once as high as 15 per cent, its latest numbers show it as sitting on just about 4 per cent of the vote.

And it’s looking more and more like Winston is going to hold most of the power come the end of September 23.

The mercurial silver fox is becoming a dab hand at just strolling into situations at exactly the right moment.

He quietly sits away in the shadows, offers the odd bit of comment here and there and every now and then he’ll strike.

And strike with a whole heap of venom.

With the Green Party in disarray and, at this stage looking unlikely to play a major role, the Labour Party coalition will all of a sudden seem a lot more appealing to Peters and New Zealand First – a slightly concerning prospect if you’re a supporter of the National Party.

Still polling at around 44 per cent, National is the one everyone still has to catch.

Whether it can be run down will be the most intriguing aspect of the next month’s political action.

I would like to comment on Ashburton’s [District Council] service manager Neil McCann’s comments about the roads in the Ashburton Guardian on August 17.

Yes, we have had damage to our roads due to flooding etc, but the cracking you spoke about is also caused by heavy loads and poor road construction. If rain was a big factor the West Coast would have massive problems. It is nothing over there to get an 80mm downpour in 10 minutes and 450mm, or more, per month in some parts.

It was confirmed that Thompsons Track has a poor construction, like many other roads. This was also confirmed by the firm the council had to do road tests on the roads through the Ashburton District.

This machine worked on weights, the more put on the better the road, the more taken off the poorer the road. In a lot of roads, weights had to be taken off, so our roads’ construction is on the poor side.

They were never built for 40-50-tonne payloads and the amount of loads per day, the farming sector has grown so much, but the roads haven’t changed. With some roads with 100mm of gravel before clay or dirt, it’s no wonder they crack under the pressure. The sub-base of all roads is the backbone of the road.

The road I spoke about on August 17 is only one of them.

Tar and chip will cover a lot of bad spots, but the weights will make it return.

I said over two years ago that the council was chasing its tail and I still say that now. I would like to thank the neighbours that came to the aid of the lady and her children in the latest accident.

A fence can be fixed, but a life taken cannot.

I am only one of many that are unhappy with the state of some of our roads.

ames Shaw (Green Party sole leader) has so far missed a great opportunity to plug the gaping gap left by the fiasco of his co-leader’s self-inflicted demise, by not rushing in one of several glamorous possible successors he has at his disposal, to take over from the less-thanglamorous Meteria Turei.

Chloe Swarbrick would be my pick, but Hayley Holt, Golriz Ghahraman or Julie-Anne Genter might do equally well.

They are all, you see, glamorous! Glamour “turns on” voters.

Never mind policies or political niceties. If the voter likes the face – or the “cut of the gib” – he/she will vote for it.

After all, Labour policies have changed little since Jacinda embraced them, with spectacular success, yet hard-working Andrew Little could get little traction from them.

Which only goes to show ...

Jacinda, meanwhile, has become only just less than a goddess.

Mr Shaw, is, himself, a presentable fellow and if he had, standing beside him on the party platform, any one of the attractive ladies mentioned above, lingering, horrific memories of Ms Turei would soon vanish in the haze and the Green vote rise meteorically to the point where Labour would be pleased to have them back, Jacindamania not withstanding.

If enough of them returned to the fold from which they so recently wandered – when someone carelessly left the gate open – they might even muster enough Green sheep who, combined

with the Jacinda party and under the terms of the MOU (memorandum of understanding), could make unnecessary the presence of that grizzled old ram, Winston, in their midst, and they be able to form a government without him and his faithful harem of ewes and wethers.

As I suggested in an earlier piece, parties which are in the happy position of being able to field fetching candidates complete with beguiling smiles should, at once, produce and parade them in the certain confidence of party progress at the polls. And if there’s anyone out there who thinks this all sounds suspiciously “sexist” they should rapidly “get a life” and accept the incontrovertible fact that human nature is still immune to the gruesome inroads of political correctness.

If Labour has been able, completely, to change its face and, with it, its electoral prospects, why not everyone else?

Meanwhile, Labour has returned to dear old memory lane by disinterring the youth vote. Among other things, Labour will offer the young free driving lessons, as well as substantial university allowances, even, it is heavily rumoured, free fees for tertiary education. Well, if Helen used the educational bribe approach why not Jacinda?

ferent alternative – boot camps, for being out and about between midnight and 5am, and established recidivists. Particularly aimed at those young but inveterate trouble-makers, who show no inclination to change their anti-social ways.

Some may feel that’s an admirable solution to a long-festering social sore, while others have treated the idea with derision and unadulterated scorn.

Now we have an apparently full-blown spat between the Australian Liberal Government and our Labour Party re parliamentary questions from this side of the Tasman, which appeared to cast doubt on the origins of current, Deputy Australian PM, Barnaby Joyce. The suggestion, that as the son of his New Zealand father, he, too, is first and foremost a Kiwi and thereby, by virtue of holding double nationality, is not qualified to be an Australian Member of Parliament.

If that were the case his resignation would, at once, be required and down would come the Australian Government with him.

In response to this supposed NZ Labour “plot”, Julie “Barking” Bishop (Australian Foreign Minister) instantly mounted a very high horse, from the back of which she was heard to declaim that she would find it hard to build trust “with those involved in allegations designed

to undermine the government of Australia”.

That is known in the business as “an over-reaction”.

Last reports had Miss Bishop being helped down from her lofty location and led away for a much-needed rub-down and cool shower.

I received a letter recently with a different approach. It was from an organisation called nzandbeyond which is organising a prayer walk through neighbourhood streets on September 2.

The reasons given for the walk

are of concern to us all.

“Family breakdown, suicide, abuse, violence and poverty have been rampant in our society for too long.

“Clearly we need a move of God to see the tide turned and transformation take place.”

Many of these problems are in people’s hearts and the relationships they have with each other.

So indeed we vote carefully in the election. But you are also

invited to walk and pray for our beloved country on September 2.

‘Minimum wage $20’

By Paul McBeth New Zealand First is pledging to raise the minimum wage to $20 an hour within three years as part of a confidence and supply agreement to form a government after the September 23 election.

The increase would be offset for employers with a company tax cut package to negate the increased cost to employers and businesses of paying fair wages”, said party leader Winston Peters in a campaign speech in Tauranga’s Red Square, the heart of the Tauranga electorate the now Northland MP held for eight parliamentary terms between 1984 and 2005.

“Drastically increasing the minimum wage will increase productivity and stimulate the economy,” said Peters, who reconfirmed the party’s longstanding policy to remove GST from the price of “essential food”.

Some 83 per cent of the 8251 wool bales offered at yesterday’s South Island auction were sold, and prices lifted for all styles of wool on offer with the coarse crossbred wool indicator up 9 cents to $2.82 a kilogram, AgriHQ said. “Compared to prices at the South Island sale, all prices were strong,” said AgriHQ analyst Sam Laurenson. “Continued upward movement is crucial for the wool market with all indicators except for merino wool indicator below five-year averages.” - NZME

Corporate results please investors T he key focus for investors this week has been the Australasian reporting season, with a large number of corporates both here and in Australia reporting full and half year results.

Expectations heading into the reporting season were fairly high given current lofty valuations.

So far, the market has not been disappointed with the majority of companies finding favour with the market and pushing the NZX50 to fresh record highs.

One of the companies in focus for investors both here and across the Tasman was Fletcher Building.

The embattled construction company has had numerous profit downgrades this year, with the last of these happening late in July that coincided with the departure of CEO, Mark Adamson.

The market was therefore well prepared for the significant decline in profit for the year and were far more focused on the outlook for the coming year.

Although no quantitative figures were given for guidance, the outlook was reasonably upbeat, although more colour will be given at the AGM to be held in October.

The market reacted favourably to the result, and the share price rose 1.8 per cent, taking it back above $8.

Freightways reported its full year result and showed solid top line growth with revenue beating expectations. Revenue was driven by strong volume growth, however, this came at the expense of margins.

growth expected to continue at narrow margins.

The market was disappointed with the outlook and Freightways’ share price weakened over the following days. Some of these losses were reversed later in the week when the company announced a new acquisition.

Freightways has diversified its presence in the Australian market through the purchase of State Waste Services, a medical waste company based in Sydney.

Telstra reported its full year earnings later in the week and the result was largely in line with expectations. However, the market was focused on the company’s new dividend and capital policy which will see its dividend slashed from 31 cents per share this year to 22 cents per share in the 2018 financial year.

The new dividend policy is to pay out 70-90 per cent of underlying earnings and 75 per cent of one-off National Broadband Network payments as special dividends.

This is much lower than the previous policy, which was around 95 per cent of earnings.

The market was thoroughly disappointed with the announcement, which led to a 12 per cent decline in the share price when the market opened.

Reporting season continues

next week with yet another busy week. We will be watching for earnings from Amcor, BHP Billiton, Sydney Airport, Auckland Airport, Port of Tauranga and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare to name just a few.

Reporting season wasn’t the only thing investors were watching this week.

The political front at home was a lot less dramatic, with no leadership changes from any of the major political parties.

However, geo-political tensions continued to capture the attention of global markets. The war of words between US President Donald Trump and North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un simmered down significantly, and markets rallied as investors became less risk averse.

The latest Global Dairy Trade auction saw a decline of 0.4 per cent in the headline index.

However, this was the sixth auction in a row that has seen a price movement of less than 2 per cent from the headline index, showing that prices have stabilised.

This was a welcome development given the significant volatility in dairy prices over the past few years.

The whole milk powder price was the biggest contributor to the loss, falling 0.6 per cent, but taking up the lion’s share of the 32,000 tonnes of product sold at the auction.

Police kill attackers Police in Spain say they have shot and killed several people south of Barcelona while carrying out an operation in response to an earlier terrorist attack in Barcelona.

The regional police for the Catalonia region said on Twitter yesterday that officers were in Cambrils, a seaside resort town about 100 kilometres from Barcelona.

They called on people in the town not to go out on the streets.

A Catalan police spokeswoman says police have killed four attackers in Cambrils and another is seriously injured following an operation against what authorities called a terrorist attack. The fifth attacker has since died.

Spanish media Cadena Ser reported that a group of people attempted to drive a van onto a pedestrian area in the town but the van overturned and its occupants were shot by police.

They said another attacker may still be alive and they were reportedly wearing explosive belts.

It comes after police arrested a suspect who allegedly rented a getaway van to carry out the Barcelona terror attack.

Footage showed a man being detained by armed officers shortly after the attack which left at least 13 people dead and more than 100 others injured.

Spanish police said one of the vans used in the attack was rented by a Moroccan man 15 miles from where the atrocity

Stone tops money list Emma Stone is the world’s highest-paid actress, according to Forbes magazine.

The 28-year-old star – who appeared in the musical romance La La Land in 2016 – made $US26 million in the last 12 months, thereby taking her past the earnings of Jennifer Lawrence, who claimed the top spot last year and in 2015. Stone was followed on the list by former Friends actress Jennifer Aniston, who made as much as $US25.5 million over the same 12-month period, while Lawrence placed third with $US24 million. Injured people are treated in Barcelona, Spain, after a white van jumped the sidewalk in the historic Las Ramblas district, crashing into a summer crowd of residents.

Fitness trainer dies after falling from 12th floor A Hong Kong fitness trainer fell to his death from a commercial building in the city while standing on railings to take photos of two other instructors.

The incident happened on the 12th floor of Li Dong Building in Li Yuen St East.

Will Kong Wai, 25, was standing on railings to get a better position to take photographs

when he fell about 9am Thursday. The trainer was helping a 38-year-old photographer take promotional pictures of two other fitness instructors – an expatriate aged 27

and a 25-year-old Hong Kong woman – according to a police source.

“We believe the victim lost balance and fell off the building,” the source said.

Celtic, AshColl to face off

The intensity of Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier competition heated up on Thursday night as the semi-finals wrapped up.

In the first semi-final of the night, top seeded Celtic took on fourth seed Methven, booking their place in the final courtesy of a 31-22 win.

With Celtic winning the round robin match 28-17, Methven being able to turn around that kind of loss would be unexpected.

However, they started the better of the two sides, putting the pressure on Celtic and making them work to keep the scores level at the end of the first quarter.

In a low scoring second quarter, the scores remained level at 10-10 with five minutes to go.

From that point, Celtic sniffed

a lead and never looked back.

They closed out the quarter leading 14-12.

It took Celtic a while to find their normal third quarter dominance, but when they did, Methven had little hope of coming back.

The third quarter finished 2317, and all that was left to do for Celtic was to see out the final quarter.

Celtic took their seats after the match to see who they would be facing in the final out of Hampstead and Ashburton College.

Heading in to the game, the result was hard to predict, with the two sides drawing the last time they faced.

However, AshColl, hurting from their semi-final exit in the Supernet competition the night before, put Hampstead to the

sword, running away with a 4024 victory.

The sides swapped the lead several times in the first quarter, as well as the first five minutes of the second.

With five minutes on the clock, AshColl came alive, intercepting pass after pass and clinically converting those chances in to goals.

When it rained it poured for Hampstead, as they regularly saw their starting possessions turned in to two point plays for AshColl, allowing the students to open up a six goal lead at the end of the quarter, leading 19-13.

In the third quarter, AshColl continued how they finished the second, piling the points on while strangling the Hampstead attack.

AshColl were able to keep

Hampstead scoreless for over three minutes, all but ending any hope of a comeback.

The quarter ended 30-19, and all that was left for AshColl was to hit the 40-point mark.

They just snuck in, with goalshoot Grace Wilson sinking the final goal with less than five seconds on the clock.

In the fifth and sixth play-off, United consigned Southern to a winless run, taking out the match 33-24.

In the premier two grade, Rakaia booked their place in the final after a 44-38 win against Celtic B, while the Ashburton College B side also booked their place in the final with a win against Hampstead B. Celtic C picked up fifth place with a 44-21 win against Southern B.

Melbourne are on guard for a Knights ambush when they try to seal the NRL minor premiership at Newcastle today. The Knights sit last on the ladder but have won their past three games and fancy their chances of taking the scalp of the competition frontrunners who they usually match up well against.

Craig Bellamy says their opponents have built their recent wins on a blistering start and his side have been focusing on matching that early intensity in front of an expected big crowd.

Bennett backs Benji Wayne Bennett has revealed he encouraged Benji Marshall to return to Wests Tigers, saying the Kiwi international had earned a dream finish to his career. Lloyd joins Magic squad

Mid Canterbury netballing star Kate Lloyd has moved from strength to strength in 2017, and has capped it off by signing with the WBOP Magic for the 2018 ANZ Premiership season.

Only just over a month since returning from the Netball Youth World Cup in Botswana with a gold medal, Lloyd has jumped ship from the Mainland Tactix to join the Magic.

Magic coach Marg Forsyth said Lloyd first came to their attention in a clash between the Tactix and Magic last season, where Lloyd came on at goal defence.

“We noticed she had range and mobility, and obviously she was in the U-21 squad that won the Youth World Championships in Botswana so we saw her there as well,” she said.

Forsyth said building a squad with a strong balance of experience and youth was important to build for the future seasons as well.

When it comes to developing for the future, Lloyd will have one of the most experienced defenders in New Zealand Netball to learn from, Casey Kopua, who will be entering her 15th season with the Magic.

All three of Mid Canterbury’s hockey sides will be back in action this weekend, with the chance at silverware still on the line.

In the women’s division one, Hampstead have already booked their place in the final after a shootout victory against Timaru Girls’ High School last weekend.

It will be a local derby against Hampstead/Collegians who were on the losing end of a shootout last week when they lost to Craighead.

In the men’s first division, Wakanui still have a chance of making the plate final if they are able to beat Tainui in Timaru.

Last hit-out for Hammers

The Mid Canterbury Hammers will have one last chance to get everything right when they take to the paddock in a game of thirds against the West Coast in Methven today.

The Hammers will already be up against it heading in to the clash, with several players missing through injury and work commitments.

“We will play the first two thirds and see how we go and figure out what we will do in the third one, even if it is just play 15-20 minutes as we don’t want to risk anymore injuries,” said co-coach Craig Dunlea.

“The boys have had 10 days off after the shield challenge so it is just about getting back in to it.”

Coming off two matches against seriously higher ranked opposition than normal, Dunlea said the main job now is getting the boys back up for the Heartland competition.

“We held our own at times against those big guys and it is just those minor details that put them above,” he said.

“We have the talent in our squad so if we can get the guys doing that it would be brilliant and it is our job to bring it together as a team.”

The Hammers will start their season at home to Mid Canterbury are set to bounce back from a ten-day break after their Ranfurly Poverty Bay next weekend, before travelling to take on Shield challenge when they take on the West Coast in Methven today.

Glenn’s team firing on all cylinders at World Cup J

ust when you thought rugby was taking a bit of a breather, after the never-ending drama of the highly unsatisfying Lions tour, then the highly satisfying Crusaders Super Rugby victory, you have a look over your shoulder and it’s still there, mountains of it.

For a start, the quick-fire Mitre 10 competition has already kicked off, with hardly any fanfare to go with it, and our own brave lads will begin their overdue quest to get their hands on the Meads Cup again when Poverty Bay come visiting the showgrounds on August 26.

On the world stage, there’s a fair bit happening too.

Late on Thursday night, whilst flicking through the channels as you do, I discovered the Black Ferns playing Canada.

That’s in the Women’s Rugby World Cup, if you weren’t aware it was on, a tournament our girls have won four times, but they’re not the defending champs.

That label belongs to England, and last time around New Zealand didn’t even make the final.

England were pushed hard in that final by the Canadians, who reckoned they were in with a shot at the New Zealanders this year after a couple of hefty victories, and had their eye on the big prize already.

But the Kiwi girls, superbly coached by our own Glenn Moore, had other ideas, and came out firing.

There’s still plenty who still think women’s rugby is a bunch of girls flapping ineffectually around the pitch, but I would urge them to take a good look at this lot.

I’d challenge any of the keyboard critics to try and tackle first five Victoria Subritzky-Nafatali when she’s on the charge – she’s a big girl (the commentators found a hundred ways not to say that), with a remarkable skill set to go with her powerful running, causing all sorts of havoc among the Canadians, who hadn’t had a single point scored against them before this game, and it finished up a 48-5 drubbing to the girls in black.

The game reminded me of the Under 20 All Blacks, or whatever they’re called these days, when they lined up against their Irish counterparts a few months ago, again in the wee small hours on

our screens. The Irish boys were well up for the game; their big brothers had not long before knocked off the real All Blacks in that historic match in Chicago and they reckoned they had our number.

They didn’t; the boys in black did what the girls did, and smashed the Irish good and proper.

That segues nicely into another big game coming up.

The Wallabies have been poring over the videos of the Lions tour, thinking that the All Blacks have

been shown to have some areas of weakness that can be exploited in Sydney tonight, because the men in black (that’s everybody in black covered now) could only draw with the northern hemisphere team. They’re conveniently ignoring about a hundred reasons why the ABs were stiffed, far too many to recite all over again.

Here’s one mild pointer; the All Blacks selectors have left out Nehe Milner-Skudder, Israel Dagg and Julian Savea. That’s a massive bunch of firepower right there, all in one position, and any other country would pay dearly to have any of them in their line-ups.

Any confidence in the Aussie camp is terribly misplaced; they’d be better off looking at what a ferocious All Blacks side did to the Irish in Dublin, in return for that Chicago embarrassment.

Weekend Sports Box A look ahead to the sporting weekend, with a glance back over the shoulder at the week that was.

Today is the last chance to see the boys in Green and Gold run out before the Heartland competition, and they will be taking to the paddock in Methven, so a potential excuse for a wee road trip to watch the Hammers take on the West Coast in a game of three, 30-minute thirds.

Still in the hunt

As the season draws to a close with only two weeks remaining, there is still something to play for for a handful of Mid Canterbury’s footballing sides.

The Methven FC Seniors are still alive in their division four knockout campaign and will take on the CashTech Sweaters in Christchurch today.

The Mid Canterbury Masters side continue in the third division, and host the Halswell United Superchargers.

In the youth grades, Mid Canterbury’s 19th graders side sit out the final round with a bye, but have nothing to sweat about as

they have already secured the division two title.

In the 17th grade third division, Mid Canterbury will welcome the Christchurch Boys’ High School 17th grade side in their last game of the season, and will be hoping to build off their 4-3 victory last week.

The 15th grade side will be hoping they can finish their stint in division one with a bang when they take on the Halswell United Hawks.

In their second-to-last game of the season, the Mid Canterbury women’s side will be keeping their unbeaten season hopes alive when they take on the Ferrymead Bays Oil Paintings at home on Sunday.

Crowd trouble mars Everton win Fans of Croatian football club Hajduk Split threw missiles and encroached on the pitch and forced the Europa League game at English Premier League club Everton to be temporarily suspended yesterday.

Life in the fast lane Central districts apprentice and ex-Ashburtonian Kate Cowan is still coming to terms with her rapid rise to prominence.

In the space of six months, she has gone from cheering her parents’ horse to a January Group One victory to beginning her riding career a month later and subsequently winning her first stakes race in August.

That victory came in the Gr.3 Winter Cup at Riccarton aboard the evergreen Nashville who is prepared at Hunterville by her employer Adrian Bull.

He trains in partnership with his son Harry, who is Cowan’s partner.

“It was amazing,” she said.

“I’m still not getting over it, it’s still not real, those things just don’t happen.”

Cowan’s Riccarton celebrations didn’t end there either as she rode a winning treble there last Saturday with her favourite Nashville claiming the open sprint while the 24-year-old was also successful aboard Southern Cool and Standrews Masonic.

Her progress is even more significant, given two years ago she had never even ridden track work.

The daughter of former jumps jockey now trainer Alex “Snooky” Cowan, said she never had any ambitions of following her father into the racing game.

That was until inspiration struck nearly two years ago.

She had originally embarked on a teaching career after receiving a scholarship, before moving on to work for Latitude Magazine and CERA. While at CERA she spent two winters in America working at a summer camp.

“I taught drama and horse riding from my much younger pony club days,” she said.

Her return from her second trip to America was a pivotal moment in Cowan’s life as this is when she decided she wanted to be a jockey.

“We always had horses when I was growing up. I did a little bit of pony club when I was younger, but not too much,” she said.

“I never thought I’d do it, but as I got older I saw the life that my family had. Everything we had was because of horses. I took it all in and thought this (riding) might not be a bad idea.

“When you get to a certain age you need to settle down and focus on something that is going

What tipped the scales for Cowan was watching the 2015 Melbourne Cup. “When I saw Michelle Payne win the Melbourne Cup that really inspired me, not just for winning but the way she spoke on television.

“I really loved it,” Cowan said.

“I said to my Dad I wanted to do it, but he didn’t really take me seriously because I had never previously shown much interest.

“Time went on and I was still saying it and that’s when he finally relented.”

Her father sent her north to learn under former jockey Nigel Tiley at Pukekohe, an eye-opening experience for Cowan.

“I had never ridden track work before,” she said.

“But I thought ‘how hard could this be when I first arrived’. But as it turned out, it was very hard and I had a horse bolt on me on the first day – I did several laps of the track.”

She began race riding in February and rode her first winner in just a few weeks when victorious on Kolee at Hawera in March.

Now Cowan has won her first stakes race and said the only goals she has set herself is to improve as a rider.

“Right now I just want to keep getting better. It is all about learning and improving and I just want to be a good rider, that’s the main thing.”
