EA Networks to put up a fight BY LINDA CLARKE
LINDA.C@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
EA Networks will fight the Electricity Authority to temper transmission price rises for its customers in Mid Canterbury. The authority wants to introduce a new charging regime across the country and Ashburton District power consumers could be hit with a $100-a-year rise.
The district has the lowest line charge for residential households in the country based on a national winter peak. The new charging system will look at 100 peaks in individual areas, which includes the summer peak demand in Mid Canterbury driven by irrigation. EA Networks chairman Gary Leech said it could be argued that
Ashburton had enjoyed lower prices over the years because its peak loads were in summer, but it was clear the authority was changing the way it calculated transmission costs and price rises were coming for consumers. At the Ashburton company’s AGM this week, Leech said EA Networks was lobbying the Government to make sure consumers
in the district were not unfairly penalised by the changes. EA Networks posted an aftertax profit of $5.9 million for the last financial year, with revenue of $47.1m. It gave $4m back to consumers in rebates.
