Motorists pay millions in fines BY DAISY HUDSON

Motorists have coughed up over a million dollars for traffic offending in Mid/South Canterbury during the last six months. However, a significant reduction in speeding offences has pleased local police. According to statistics released by police this week, Mid/South Canterbury drivers have paid $1,214,330 in traffic fines between January and June this year. That was a slight increase on the same period last year, when $1,132,580 was collected by police. While fines were up, the overall number of traffic offences has dropped
by nearly 20 per cent. The main reason for that was a significant decrease in the number of motorists pinged for speeding. Infringement notices issued by speed cameras have dropped by 32 per cent since the same time last year, while tickets issued by police officers fell by 6 per cent. Ashburton police senior sergeant Scott Banfield said it was pleasing to see a reduction in the amount of speeding notices issued. That, coupled with an obvious reduction in fatal crashes in Mid Canterbury over the last 12 months, gave him hope that the community understood that an increase in speed lifted the risk when driving, he said.
“All Mid Canterbury police staff have adopted a “see something do something” philosophy to road policing offending,” he said. “However you can see from the provided statistics that we are still not getting the message around using a cellphone while driving, and there are still some within our community that choose to consume alcohol prior to driving.” The number of motorists caught using cellphones while driving rose from 262 last year to 297 this year. Alcohol offences are also on the rise, climbing from 179 offences to 196.
