Business Mid Canterbury members were out on the streets of Ashburton yesterday, checking out the streetscape, the buildings and the yawning gaps in search of ideas to brighten up the town centre.

The group described themselves as the “short-term team”,

their mission to come up with ideas that would be a quick fix that would make the town centre look more welcoming until longterm revitalisation plans got under way.

“It’s a bit of taking stock. You can look at things, walk past them every day and not see they’re broken,” retailer Bob McDonald said.

“Different people will see things differently and we’re trying to come up with a bit of a plan, a short-term plan, with things like murals and hanging plants,” he said. The organisation’s board

had taken a good look at the Ashburton District Council’s recently-released town centre redevelopment plan and liked what they saw.

While the council plan does have some elements that can be implemented now, many will not come into effect until a significant amount of the town centre rebuild is completed.

A nine-member group of mayors and tourism industry representatives has been appointed to sort out the problems around freedom camping.

Tourism Minister Kelvin Davis announced the appointments yesterday, saying the group had to come up with a progress report by July 31.

He wants freedom camper issues dealt with before next summer.

There have been persistent reports of freedom campers littering, defecating in gardens, parking in the wrong places and going to soup kitchens.

Regional Tourism NZ says the majority are responsible campers and they’re getting a bad name because some don’t follow the rules.

It also says any visitor would find the bylaws bewildering because they differ from region to region, and in some places there are none at all.

Mr Davis says the issues are complex and need a well-considered response.

“What works for one council and community doesn’t necessarily work for others. I expect the working group’s recommendations to cover practical actions.”

The working group includes mayors from Rotorua, Queenstown, Central Otago and Christchurch, with three of them on it at any one time.

The industry has representatives from Tourism Industry Aotearoa, Tourism Holdings and the Motor Caravan Association.

The Department of Internal Affairs, MBIE and the Department of Conservation will provide policy advice.

Not only do the Cass Street give way signs come as a surprise to motorists, Stapleton said, but they are difficult to see when trucks from the event centre obscure them. She said she “couldn’t understand why they don’t change it

to match.”

“The way it is, cars just don’t slow down. We’ve recently had new neighbours move in and they said to us they can’t believe how often people crash.”

The most recent incident oc-

curred at 4.50pm on Tuesday, when two cars collided. Police said one person was injured and one of the vehicles was badly damaged.

Another crash in February saw a car roll over completely on to its doors, but the driver escaped with

only minor injuries.

“There’s just been so many over the years,” said Stapleton.

The Ashburton District Council has been contacted for comment, but had not replied by the time we went to print.

If the turn-out at a meeting to discuss how rates money will be spent next year is any indication, Ashburton’s ratepayers have voted 100 per cent approval of the Ashburton District Council’s budget.

The first in a series of community meetings on the council’s longterm plan was held in Ashburton on Tuesday night attracting a turn-out of just 23 – one mayor, 10 district councillors, seven members of staff, one member of the media and four members of the

public. And those members of the public included ex-mayor Angus McKay and retired district councillor Darryl Nelson and his wife.

Not only was that turn-out a disappointment for elected members, it was also a slap in the face for staff who had spent hours preparing a presentation on the plan.

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel opened the meeting telling the audience of four that the council wanted public input on the plan.

“There’s a lot happening in our district.

“We’re growing and we’re

changing. We want to make the best of the opportunities we have and we’re doing that by planning,” she said.

The council’s budget was just like a household budget, but on a larger scale. You looked at what you wanted to do and looked at the money you had and took out what you needed to take out, Favel said.

“We want you to let us know if we’ve missed things or there are things in there you don’t want.

This is about meeting the current and the future needs of our dis-

trict. What we’ve prepared is what we think is the best path forward.”

Finance committee chairman Russell Ellis said he was very disappointed at the poor showing by the public.

This was an opportunity for people to get out there and to find out what’s planned, but they’d rather complain behind the scenes,” he said.

The no-show was hard on staff who had put hours of work into developing presentations that would make it very clear what was planned and how people could in-

fluence final decisions, Ellis said.

“Given the rate rises at Lake Hood and the increase in fees at the EA Networks Centre I asked the question, what is our plan if we get inundated with EA Networks and Lake Hood people – we didn’t need to plan, did we.”

Ellis said he and his fellow councillors were hoping for a better turn-out at other meetings to be held around the district over the next two weeks.

A second Ashburton meeting would be held from noon to 2pm on May 9.

In brief

Dancers heading to United States Ashburton’s top highland dancers will be spending their school holidays in the United States, taking part in the Virginia International Tattoo.

Dancers Britney Moore, Lucy Moore, Charlotte Sloper, Megan Harrison and Eirinn MacLean are travelling to America as part of the 32 strong New Zealand Highland Dancing team to perform at the event.

The team is performing the opening act for the tattoo with a special tribute to Anzac performed to the music Here’s to the Heros. They will be backed by a singer, a full choir and the massed pipe bands.

Their second item will see Swing of the Kilts performed which incorporates highland reel type movements and formations.

About 38,000 people attend the tattoo and many travel a great distance to be there. Because queues to enter are so long a second event is held outside the stadium.

This is called the Hullabaloo and the dancers will also take part in this, performing items that they will be showcasing later in the year as part of their South Island tour, Heart of the Highlands.

If you’re after fresh produce, then Saturday might be your last chance for several months to stock up on local produce at Ashburton’s Farmers’ Market. The market is about to head into its winter shut down, but already organiser Judith Crozier is looking ahead to a spring reopening saying she’ll be hunting out new suppliers for the new season. Over peak season the market attracts steady support from both stall holders and shoppers, but it’s time to look at taking the event to the next level, and bring in new suppliers, she said. Over the summer months the market has been well supported by regular customers. It will reopen in late September.

New name, bigger role It’s now operating under a new name but it still produces the same services to people across New Zealand.

The New Zealand Press Council has this week announced it has become the New Zealand Media Council and is now accepting complaints from the public concerning video-on-demand programme classifications.

The changes were approved by the NZ Media Association Inc, the organisation responsible for funding the Media Council. Association chairman Rick Neville

said the move is part of the media industry’s commitment to provide the public with a free, independent and robust forum for resolving complaints against emerging media platforms.

“The NZ Media Council’s independence from both the media organisations and the Government makes it well suited to be the forum for the public to resolve complaints against media content on different media platforms,” Neville said.

“With a history stretching back more than 40 years, the council

is an enduring example that selfregulation can work, and work well.”

The Press Council was founded by the newspaper industry and union representing working journalists in 1972. Since that time, its jurisdiction has grown to include magazines, community and foreign language newspapers, news websites, and more recently, a wide range of digital platforms.

From this week, the renamed Media Council offers a new classification code and an inde-

pendent consumer complaints process for video-on-demand programme classifications. The new complaints service is supported by local and international VOD providers including MediaWorks, Stuff, Sky Television, RNZ, NZME, Lightbox, Netflix, Maori Television, Google and TVNZ. The Media Council is chaired by former High Court judge Sir John Hansen. The council has a majority of public (non-industry) members and is funded entirely by the media industry with no call on taxpayer funds.

The chants of the Mid Canterbury Choir have surged in volume following a significant boost in membership. Hot off the heels of a successful concert with blues legend Paul Ubana Jones, the choir held a have-a-go evening on Monday during which 12 more locals signed up. The new members are evenly spread across the sections which bodes well for the choir, said Mid Canterbury Choir Manager Carol Gunn.

They will now join rehearsals with the 35 existing members, practising new material for a Tribute to War Heroes concert on July 1. “It is always exciting to have new voices to blend with the choir,” Gunn said.

Fuel light fails test A Hamilton teenager will have to wait another two weeks to try earn his driver’s licence after he was failed on one attempt when the fuel warning light came on in the middle of the test. Michael O’Brien was given an automatic fail by a Vehicle Test New Zealand driving instructor after the light came on 23 minutes into the 45-minute restricted driver licence test. But VTNZ has since apologised to the 17-year-old after his father complained, and has offered to refund the $86 fee and provide a free re-sit of the test.

Hamilton resident Jesse O’Brien said his son was disappointed at the failure, particularly as a prevehicle inspection was carried out before the test started.

March house prices slump House prices in the Ashburton District took a significant tumble in March, with REINZ statistics showing they fell almost 15 per cent from February and were 7.2 per cent below March last year.

Those falling values put Ashburton in good company in Canterbury, with several territorial local authorities watching house prices drop for the month.

The region’s star, Mackenzie, where prices have been rocketing up month on month, also went into reverse, with prices dropping 16.7 per cent.

Regional director Jim Davies

said that current buyers were very price sensitive and that anything deemed to be overpriced was taking much longer to sell.

The median price in the Ashburton District in March fell to $315,000 compared to $370,000 last month and $339,395 in March last year The number of houses sold was also well down in March, from 66 in February and 65 in March 2017.

The current number of days it took to see a home sold was on average 35 days and the level of inventory available for sale sits at 19 weeks.

Success for ploughers Mid Canterbury ploughers have returned home from the national championships in Invercargill with top 10 placings.

Colin Drummond, from Erewhon Station, was second in the horse plough with his outstanding team of Clydesdales, while Rakaia’s Gordon Carter was third in the vintage ploughing event that runs alongside the main Silver Plough conventional competition.

The Silver Plough was won by

Ian Woolley, with Scott McKenzie second, while the reversible class was won by Bob Mehrtens from Malcolm Taylor.

Both winners will represent New Zealand at the world ploughing championships in the United States in 2019.

Mid Canterbury’s Tryphena Carter finished 10th in the conventional and Simon Reed 12th.

Rakaia will host the 2019 national championships.

DHB staff lay pay claim District Health Board clerical and administrative workers have laid an equal pay claim, saying they’re among the poorest paid people in the health system.

Their union, the PSA, says around 7000 workers are involved in the claim and about 90 per cent of them are women.

“They keep the system running but most are paid little more than the minimum wage because their jobs have been considered ‘women’s work’,” said PSA national sec-

retary Erin Polaczuk.

“This claim, raised under the process recommended by the Joint Working Group on Equal Pay Principles, will set about ending this once and for all.”

The previous government set up the joint working group following the historic pay settlement gained by community care workers.

DHB representatives confirmed the claim had been received and said it would be worked through.

Fear is the number one reason people avoid going to the dentist, but an Ashburton dental practice is hoping to help change that by opening its doors to the public on Monday night.

Dentist Michael Holdaway and his Dentistry on Parkside team are keen to tackle the worries, often unfounded, about modern dentistry and explain why looking after your teeth is about more than a great smile.

The practice will have its hitech surgeries set up so people can look and ask questions about what goes on.

Trump comparison infuriates Ardern Jacinda Ardern has told a toprating American television show she was “infuriated” by being compared to US President Donald Trump.

NBC talk show Today ran a prerecorded feature on the Prime Minister overnight called Pregnant and in Power. The show has around five million viewers.

Host Cynthia McFadden, who interviewed Ardern in her Auckland home, raised the Wall Street Journal’s comparison of her to Trump.

The newspaper said Ardern was “New Zealand’s Justin Trudeau” but that her immigration policies were similar to Trump’s.

“That infuriated me,” she told the Today show.

“We are a party who was at the same time campaigning to double our refugee quota. We are a nation built on immigration.

“I am only a third-generation New Zealander. The suggestion in any way that New Zealand wasn’t an open, outward-facing country … made me extremely angry.”

McFadden made a different comparison, saying Ardern was similar to US Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders because of her socialist background. Her coalition with NZ First leader

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern as she appeared on the Today talk show.

Winston Peters was like Sanders teaming up with conservative Republican Ted Cruz, she said.

The interview focused primarily on Ardern’s status as just the second woman head of state to give birth while in power.

“I’m looking forward to the day when we won’t have news stories about that because it won’t be nearly as unusual,” Ardern said.

“But for now I accept that that’s just the way it is.”

McFadden also raised a Daily Mail column which said a pregnant Prime Minister “was not feminism” but a betrayal of her voters.

“Eh,” Ardern replied. “Women multitask every single day. Every single day. The sentiment in that piece suggests that women can

only be mothers or other. Can I be a prime minister and a mother? Absolutely. Absolutely.

“Will I have help to do that?

Yes.” Responding to the broadcast yesterday, Act Party leader David Seymour accused Ardern of rewriting history by saying her campaign had been outward-facing.

Labour had promised to cut migrant numbers by up to 30,000 and since coming to power had restricted foreign investment in property.

“The idea that Labour ran a campaign that was open to the world is completely false. It has now delivered on its promise and is running a xenophobic government.”

Building industry lobbies IMF over foreign buyers Building industry figures lobbying to change the government’s mind over the foreign buyer ban have been buoyed by the International Monetary Fund adding its voice to the cause.

IMF officials, in New Zealand this week, called the Overseas Investment Amendment Bill “discriminatory” and hinted that banning foreign investment in housing was an over-reaction to a problem that might not even exist.

“Foreign buyers seem to have played a minor role in New Zea-

land’s residential real estate market recently,” IMF division chief for Asia and Pacific Thomas Helbling said on Tuesday.

He added that there were other ways for the government to respond if large volumes of unwanted foreign money suddenly flowed into New Zealand’s property market.

Any such measures should be “temporary and targeted”, Helbling said, whereas the buyer ban is a “very definitive measure” and could send a negative signal to foreign investors more broadly.

The OIAB, a cornerstone government initiative, is designed to stop foreign speculators buying houses, which would otherwise be available for New Zealanders.

But most of the more than 200 submitters to the Parliamentary select committee considering the bill are worried the legislation is far more likely to do the opposite to what is intended.

Land and property developer Alastair Porter, one of the submitters to the committee hearings, welcomed the IMF’s stance, saying the foreign

buyer ban is just bad law.

“The political problem is that what they are suggesting sounds like a good idea. If you stop selling houses overseas somehow there will be more for New Zealanders.

But as 95 per cent of submissions [to the committee] said, actually it will have the reverse effect – it will aggravate the shortage of affordable housing.”

The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand was also cheered by the IMF’s statement.

Reinz has consistently argued there is no data to suggest for-

eign buyers are taking the nation’s houses.

In fact, a survey of real estate agents last year found less than 4 per cent of buyers are from overseas.

Koreans can’t end war President Donald Trump has given his blessing for North and South Korea to discuss the end of the Korean War amid a diplomatic push to end the North Korean nuclear standoff.

One problem: There can be no real talks without the involvement of the other countries that fought the 1950-53 war, and especially the United States.

The reason is that South Korea wasn’t a direct signatory to the armistice that stopped the fighting but left the Korean Peninsula still technically in a state of war.

There’s widespread interest in what South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will talk about during their summit on April 27, which would only be the third such meeting between the countries’ leaders.

A separate meeting between Kim and Trump is anticipated in May or June.

A senior South Korean presidential official said that the Korea’s plan to use their summit to discuss ending military hostilities, but it wasn’t clear if they’d discuss the end of the war.

North Korea has long sought a peace treaty with the United States to formally end the war.

Some South Koreans fear that the North could use such a treaty as a pretext for demanding the withdrawal of the 28,500 American troops currently stationed in the South. Some worry that potential discussions to formally end the war may distract from already difficult efforts to rid the North of nuclear weapons and apply robust verification of that process.

The armistice was signed by the US-led United Nations Command, North Korea and China. South Korea was a member of the UN Command but was not a direct signatory.

In their previous summit in 2007, the Koreas declared a commitment toward ending the war and vowed to pursue discussions with others. But the efforts faltered and the relations between the rivals worsened after a conservative government took office in Seoul in February 2008.

Fifty more Manus Island refugees for US About 50 refugees are expected to leave Manus Island and Nauru in coming weeks to start new lives in the US, as Australia continues the slow process of emptying the immigration camps.

The refugees, who received their final approvals yesterday morning, will join about 230 others who have been resettled in America.

“We’re continuing to work with the United States and this is the next step in that process,” coalition frontbencher Darren Chester told Sky News.

“We must never forget how we got in this position. It was the Labor Party that had an open door policy which led to so many people being put in detention and people drowning at sea.

“So we’re trying to work our

way through the situation. Our border protection policies have worked, and we’re endeavouring to reach a solution in partnership with other nations.”

Since resettlements under the deal started in September, about 145 refugees have left Nauru and 85 have departed Papua New Guinea’s Manus Island.

Greens Senator Nick McKim said the latest development was good news for those directly affected.

“But it’s not good news for the majority of men, women and children on Manus Island and Nauru who have now clicked up over five years in offshore detention and have no idea what the future holds for them,” he said.

There are about 309 people left on Nauru and several hun-

dred on Manus Island.

Labor senator Kristina Keneally said Australians wanted a speedy resolution to clearing the offshore camps, with genuine refugees stuck in cruel conditions for too long.

“The Turnbull government needs to get moving, and if Labor comes to government, we need to be clear that we are working hard with our allies around the world to find a solution to this,” Senator Keneally said.

“We’ve found a solution – a partial solution – with the United States. We have an offer from New Zealand.”

Senator Keneally said Labor supported offshore immigration processing but could not support leaving people to languish without hope.

Dutton seized on her “pathetic” comments, saying Senator Keneally was “all talk” and Labor was soft on border protection.

“Labor put the people on Manus and Nauru. She talks a big game but let’s see if she has the guts to change the policy at conference,” Dutton posted to Twitter.

The United Nations Association of Australia is demanding an immediate end to offshore detention, and wants at least temporary protection in Australia offered to those who cannot be safely repatriated or resettled in another country.

Under the deal reached with the previous Obama administration the US agreed to take up to 1250 refugees from Australia’s offshore detention centres.

Scientology feud A former Church of Scientology security guard has claimed there is an ongoing rivalry between two of its most famous members, Tom Cruise and John Travolta.

Brendan Tighe, who was a scientologist for 30 years, said the two stars have furiously vied for the church’s number two position, underneath leader David Miscavige. But he says, “Cruise is the only celeb with a direct line to Miscavige.

Travolta and Kirstie [Alley] don’t have that.” Cruise was reportedly given the highest award in scientology in 2008.

According to Tighe, this made Travolta “explode in jealousy”.

Former first lady Barbara Bush dies Barbara Bush, the snowyhaired first lady and mother of a president whose plainspoken manner and utter lack of pretense made her more popular at times than her husband, President George H W Bush, died yesterday, a family spokesman said. She was 92.

Bush brought a grandmotherly style to buttoned-down Washington, often appearing in her trademark fake pearl chokers and displaying no vanity about her white hair and wrinkles.

“What you see with me is what you get. I’m not running for president – George Bush is,”

Barbara Bush she said at the 1988 Republican National Convention, where her husband, then vice-president, was nominated to succeed Ronald Reagan.

The Bushes, who were married January 6, 1945, had the longest marriage of any presi-

“My dear mother has passed on at age 92. Laura, Barbara, Jenna, and I are sad, but our souls are settled because we know hers was,” former President George W Bush said in a statement. “Our family will miss her dearly, and we thank you all for your prayers and good wishes.”

George H W Bush held his wife’s hand all day and was at her side when she died, according to the chief of staff at George H W Bush’s office in Houston.

A funeral is planned for Saturday in Houston.

McIntyre adds more shows British comedian Michael McIntyre has added two new shows to his upcoming New Zealand tour. Demand to see the BAFTA award-winning comedian was so high that he sold out two arena shows in three days. The new dates, one in Auckland and one in Christchurch, will no doubt please fans who missed out.

Tickets for the new shows go on sale on Monday at midday. McIntyre will now be performing at Christchurch’s Horncastle Arena on June 17 and 18, and Auckland’s Spark Arena on June 20 and 21, next year.

Michael McIntyre is known as Britain’s biggest comedian, and known for various roles across television and movie screens.

Support our theatre companies W

e talk a lot about people from within our boundaries doing good things out in the big wide world, but often neglect those who do the same good things – just from within the four corners of our district.

Mid Canterbury, for its size and population, has many wonderful people on both sides of the fence and listing them all would be an enormous task, too hard, possibly, to even undertake.

Those talents stretch far and wide too – not just from a sporting or academic sense but right across the board.

In particular, one area which we do shine both locally and abroad, is on the stage.

Those who have been up to

Christchurch over the past few weeks may have been lucky enough to see the efforts of three Ashburton locals in the Showbiz Christchurch production of Wicked.

Jane Leonard, Greta Casey-Solly and Jack Hanrahan all shone on the stage and showcased our local talent with pride, passion and real energy.

Now, however, we get to enjoy the talents of a cast full of locals

this weekend with the Big Little Theatre Company’s show, One Man, Two Guv’nors.

This show is simply brimming with young local rising stars of the stage and they are following a similar path to the likes of Leonard, Casey-Solly and Hanrahan who all went through the theatre company in their younger years before advancing onto bigger and brighter things.

The show opens and runs this weekend only and, by all accounts, is one which will have you laughing from start to finish.

The amount of work and effort that goes into these shows, not only from the performers but from everyone off the stage as well, is immense and it’s important that we, as a community,

get behind such shows to ensure there is a future platform for the continued growth of the performing arts within our community.

Later this year too Mamma Mia! will hit the stage to help celebrate the 10th anniversary of the hugely successful Ashburton Trust Event Centre and, again, the cast is full of local talent.

Mamma Mia! will, by all reports, be nothing like we’ve seen in Ashburton before and is likely to be an occasion to miss.

Part of a nation-wide tour, the set is on its way from Auckland and after the show has finished it will be packed up and sent down to Invercargill who are putting the show on later in the year.

It’s a big ticket get and the

overheads on getting the show to Ashburton alone are huge.

Then, later on in the year, the Methven Theatre Company will celebrate its 75th jubilee in style with a yet to be announced show that insiders suggest may take a walk down memory lane with shows that have been performed on the Methven stage in the past years.

So, there’s going to be plenty to whet the appetite on the stage over the coming months and as previously stated, it’s important that these shows get the support of the community, as that support is often what the future shows rely on.

Even if you’re not a fan of the stage, it’s hard not to be a fan of locals who are doing good things.

Improving local roads H

ave the roads you drive on improved in the last nine years?

It is clear to me that over this time, the previous government never got out of first gear in terms of funding regional roads or the safety of the Kiwis who drive on them.

I am proud to say – Labour will change that.

The Draft Government Policy Statement on land transport has become quite a talking point in our community, and I am confident that it will be quite transformative for our region.

Personally, I am always saddened by reading another headline about young lives being lost on our roads too soon, and imagining the impact on their whanau, friends and wider community.

Road deaths have increased every year since 2013 and I refuse to believe this loss of life is an inevitability of growth.

Twenty years ago, Sweden had the same number of road deaths as New Zealand.

Today, after heavily investing in road safety, Sweden is now one of the safest countries in the world to drive in.

If we had kept pace, you have to wonder how many of the 250 Kiwis lost to our nation’s roads last year would still be alive.

With Labour set to double the funding for regional roading and safety improvements, it is clear that under Prime Minister

Jacinda Ardern’s leadership, our government is finally giving road safety the priority it deserves.

Early work suggests that local roads may need $800 million worth of high-value safety improvements, which once complete, could prevent 160 deaths and serious injuries per year. $800 million is less than half the cost of the previous government’s Auckland-focused EastWest Link motorway project, funded by our fuel taxes. And they say we’re removing funding from the regions and directing it to Auckland!

The truth speaks for itself.

Over the last nine years of neglect, National Land Transport Funding was actually reduced in Southland, West Coast and Otago by up to 30 per cent.

Regional Kiwis like us have been left holding the hollow promises of National’s collisioncourse road funding plan, while watching taxpayer money being wasted on a few low-value motorway projects most New Zealanders will frequently never drive on.

It’s just not good enough.

Labour will increase spending

on regional roading improvements by 98 per cent, investing a total of $6.1 billon.

We will invest in items such as median safety barriers, intersection upgrades and rumble strips, in order to make our roads safer.

As a local list MP, I will push for Mid Canterbury to get our fair share.

While the New Zealand Transport Agency determines where the funding will go, I am encouraging you to identify and submit what you would like to see made a priority project for our regional land transport plan to the NZTA. Join me in letting them know what our

region needs.

Will baying for netball blood achieve anything? etball NZ is doing what everyone’s doing these days – conducting a review. No stone will be left unturned, they say.

A review here is absolutely essential, and I don’t doubt anyone expects that as the bare minimum course of action.

What went wrong, is always the obvious place to start.

I understand the desperation of hard-out fans for answers, but is the relentless pile-on into the coach really necessary?

At times like this, if we step back and take a breath, it’s good to remember that anyone involved in any aspect of performance, be it a business person, a sportsperson, a leader of any kind, knows when they’ve screwed up. They feel it more keenly than anyone else.

Netball NZ has said, quite wisely, that responsibility doesn’t rest on any one person, and that there’s usually a range of factors – that’s a measured response, a considered one.

The rest of us tend to be a bit more knee-jerk than that.

We’re pretty much shouting “coach must go,” before the final whistle. Look at John Hart in 1999 after the All Blacks’ loss to France, look at any number of Warriors coaches.

Maria Folau posted on her Instagram that “although the last few weeks have been challenging in the black dress, (she) cannot fault the way the team has handled every situation, every game, every set back, every day”.

She said that “when you come out of situations like this, you’re not the same person who walked in”.

She said the “team will move

and grow”. Katrina Grant said the same thing.

Netball NZ has a proud history, the challenge now is to rebuild and move forward.

No one will have learnt the lesson harder than the team itself.

Whether the move forward involves the current coach or not, remains to be seen, probably not – but she of all people will know that.

Hopefully in the meantime we can back-off now and let them get on with the review, and more importantly, the rebuild.

Committee members ■ ‘know their stuff’ Marketing leader joins Alliance board ALLIANCE GROUP BOARD

DairyNZ chief executive Tim Mackle has welcomed the announcement of the members of the Interim Climate Change Committee.

“Establishing the interim committee is an important step for New Zealand towards becoming a net zero emissions economy,” Mackle said.

“DairyNZ supports the formation of this committee and the important work they will undertake for New Zealand.

“It is wonderful to see Dr Jan Wright has been included in the interim committee.

Her work as the former Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment formed the basis for much of the Government’s climate change policy. The dairy sector supported her suggestions, in her previous role, on how best to achieve New Zealand’s climate change commitments.

“There is need for a strong understanding of each of New Zealand’s major sectors – especially across the transport and agricultural sectors who are the two largest emitters.

Both Harry Clark and Suzi Kerr have important agricultural experience which will be necessary to this role.

“I am concerned, however, by the omission of a member with actual farm knowledge. This understanding and experience is vital in order to understand how different mitigations impact on the farm system.

“The expertise present across the members of the interim committee will ensure the best decisions are in place to move New Zealand’s economy towards a low emission future.”

The interim committee will consider agriculture’s role in meeting New Zealand’s greenhouse reduction targets and whether

agricultural methane and nitrous oxide emissions should face a price in the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme.

“DairyNZ is committed to assisting our levy payers do their part to address on farm emissions,” Mackle said. “The dairy industry must do its part alongside the wider economy to reduce and offset New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions.”

Federated Farmers also welcomed the appointments, saying it believed the make-up of the interim committee puts some significant scientific thinking on the case.

“This should mean we can figure out once and for all just what the obligations are that New Zealand has to meet, not just for agriculture, but for all of us.

“We are all emitters,” Federated Farmers climate change spokesman Andrew Hoggard said.

Feds believes the committee members have a good mix of skill sets between them.

“They all know their stuff.

“And a couple of them are very familiar with agribusiness and the challenges faced every day by farmers, especially given the limited range of tools available to reduce emissions.”

The committee has a list of comprehensive terms of reference to follow and it does not suggest the inclusion of agriculture in the Emissions Trading Scheme will be a forgone conclusion.

Feds was also pleased to see the committee has been given a longer length of time to report back, not until next April.

“This is not something we should be pushing to get done within an unrealistic timeframe.”

Leading food company Alliance Group has appointed marketing and consumer insights specialist Sarah Brown to its board.

Brown, who has held a number of senior management positions with high-profile companies including Lion Nathan and Colmar Brunton, has joined the meat processor and exporter as an independent director.

Her appointment brings the total number of directors on the Alliance Group Board to 10, including four independent directors.

Currently living and working parttime on a sheep and beef farm in Manawatu, Brown has considerable expertise in marketing in a broad range of industries. Over the last 18 months, she has assisted Australian Pork, Coca-Cola Amatil, Diageo and Goodman Fielder International.

She has a deep understanding of consumer insights, experience in the international food service market and brand positioning. Ms Brown has worked across the globe including Australia, China, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Korea, Japan, India, Malaysia and New Zealand.

Brown was managing director of Colmar Brunton Australia, now part of WPP Group, from 1990-1995 and consumer insights director at Lion Nathan Beer and group marketing manager at Lion Nathan Wine from 1998 -2003. This included being part of the project team that developed a marketing strategy for exporting Steinlager to China.

She has also provided strategic consumer research and innovation advice to a range of international companies and brands including BSkyB, Horlicks and Ribena.

Brown said she is looking forward to the opportunity to join a company which has made great strides in recent years.

MPI pledges compensation efficiency The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) says it is committed to helping farmers affected by mycoplasma bovis receive their due compensation and is working hard to process all current claims.

MPI’s director of response, Geoff Gwyn, said MPI has not yet received compensation claims relating to its decision to direct the cull of about 22,000 cattle on infected properties, which MPI announced last month. “However, we are aware some farmers are nervous about compensation timeframes and I would like to provide reassurance that we are running as fast and efficient a process as possible.

“We have, of course, been dealing with compensation claims throughout this response, and I think both MPI and the industry have learnt a lot that will make the process more efficient.”

Gwyn said that MPI would consider making part-payments to farmers of infected properties who are being required to cull their entire herd.

“We are pulling out all stops to process existing claims and are nearly halfway through these by value of the claims. We are significantly increasing staffing in our compensation team to do this and to ensure we can work at pace when the claims for the 22,000 culled animals start coming through.

“We understand that while there was some relief at the direction to depopulate infected properties, some farmers will inevitably worry about how long the compensation process could take. And yes, it can be a com-

plex and time-consuming process because we are talking about public money.”

As part of this, industry partners have already funded staff to help affected farmers complete their claim forms.

Gwyn said providing trained, independent advisers who can support farmers to complete their applications is an important part of expediting the process.

“That’s why we’re also asking industry to augment their resources so they can guide farmers through the compensation process and ensure they provide all the information we require.”

MPI is directly contacting professional rural and farming advisers to offer them specific training so they can better support farmers to complete their compensation claims. It also has a comprehensive support network to help farmers get their businesses back up and running as soon as they can.

The currently-assessed value of all existing claims is just under $6 million. MPI has paid out $2.5 million in compensation to date, with a further $1.5 million expected to be paid within the next fortnight – bringing the total to just over $4 million. The remaining claims will be settled as quickly as possible.

All compensation payments for culled cattle are based on market valuations carried out by an independent valuer.

Event to showcase agricultural innovation Irrigation companies have a bigger role to play in helping farmers make strategic decisions on land use, future innovation strategist Roger Dennis says.

Dennis is a keynote speaker at Agri Innovation in Ashburton on May 2, jointly hosted by MHV Water, Ashburton Lyndhurst Irrigation and Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation.

He said many organisations influence farmers, but none is more agnostic about how farmers use their land than the company that delivers their water.

“Water companies care deeply about the environmental effects of farming and the efficient use of water.

“They have no preference for what farmers produce as long as they meet the necessary environmental hurdles, which puts them in a prime, independent position to help farmers consider and address future trends,” Dennis said.

“Like many business people, farmers tend to make strategic decisions based on ‘micro trends’, and are influenced by groups with particular agendas. This can obscure more fundamental global trends that may ultimately have a greater effect on their landuse and livelihoods. Their strategic decision-making needs to focus on how water allows them to capitalise on macro changes

in the world more generally, not simply on producing more of the status quo.”

Dennis said the need to challenge and support farmers’ strategic planning for land-use also reflects how much the New Zealand economy depends on topsoil.

“In essence, our national wellbeing depends on us applying our ‘top two inches’ to our top few inches of topsoil. If we don’t then we’re in considerable trouble as a country.”

He said probably the best example of doing this successfully internationally can be found in the Netherlands.

“On average the amount of water required globally to grow a kilogram of tomatoes is 255 litres; in the Netherlands they’re now achieving this with just 11 litres thanks to advances in precision agriculture.”

Agri Innovation is a chance to combine foresight and strategy to understand the opportunities for innovation, Dennis said.

“We need to ensure agriculture doesn’t go further and further down a particular path in pursuit of the answers without challenging core assumptions and historical precedents.”

Agri Innovation is on Wednesday, May 2, from 1pm to 5pm, at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

Shop trucks prey on low-income An investigative report published yesterday revealed mobile shopping trucks continue to prey on low-income families in Wellington and Auckland.

The report, published on the Newsroom site, found that the shopping trucks move through neighbourhoods, selling household products at highly inflated prices to customers who often find it difficult to get to stores.

The investigation found that food items such as chicken drumsticks, corned beef, tuna and chocolate biscuits were sold at highly inflated prices when compared to standard grocery prices.

For example, a 3kg package of chicken drumsticks sold on a truck for $59 would cost a consumer only $12 at the Mad Butcher.

Particularly vulnerable are those who cannot afford the products and are then forced into high-interest loans, which are paid back on a weekly basis.

Customers are often only required to pay minimal amounts, keeping them tied to debts for extended periods of time.

The continuation of these activities indicate that communi-

Kathmandu Holdings will take up the full oversubscription in a share purchase plan, raising $50 million to help fund its purchase of US footwear supplier Oboz Footwear.

The Christchurch-based company yesterday said it accepted $2 million in oversubscriptions for its share purchase plan, taking total subscriptions to $10m.

That’s on top of $40m raised from institutional investors in a placement.

Shares were sold in both offers at $2.16 apiece, a 10 per cent discount to where the shares traded before the announcement.

The shares fell 0.4 per cent to $2.55 yesterday.

“We are delighted with the extent of support, both for our institutional placement last month and for the share purchase plan, and the affirmation by our shareholders of our growth plans for the business,” chair David Kirk said in a statement.

“The board would like to thank all those shareholders who participated in the SPP for their continuing support of Kathmandu.”

The capital injection will be used to help pay for the $US60m upfront purchase of Oboz, which Kathmandu pursued to expand its

presence in the North American outdoor market.

If the acquisition meets certain earnings targets in calendar 2018, Kathmandu will pay up to $US15m more.

Some 1516 Kathmandu shareholders of its 3514 investors sought to participate in the share purchase plan, offering $14.5m, meaning their offers will be scaled.

Briscoe Group, which made a failed takeover bid in 2015 when it built up a 19.8 per cent stake, participated in both the institutional placement and share purchase plan.

FMA looking at managed funds The Financial Markets Authority will take a closer look at the way fund managers regularly update their investors after a general stocktake showed some shortcomings in the way information is disclosed.

The market watchdog found managed investment scheme managers (MIS) met their general obligations to provide fund updates and most didn’t raise significant concerns, however, there were some instances where things could be improved, it said in a statement.

As a result of its stocktake, the FMA plans to investigate why some statutory information is less prominent than other parts, lobby for better disclosure of the benchmark a fund is linked to, and look at why there’s a material difference between the way charges are stated in offer documents compared to the quarterly updates.

Managed funds are seen as an

increasingly important avenue for retail investors, with the government-sponsored KiwiSaver scheme offering attractive incentives to its 2.8 million active members. Funds under managed have more than doubled $162 billion as at December 31 from $73.9 billion as at June 30, 2007, just before KiwiSaver was launched, Reserve Bank data show.

Still, households’ exposure to managed funds has remained relatively static at around 7.5 per cent of their financial assets, with investment fund shares rising 57 per cent to $66.48 billion over across all households over the same period.

The FMA’s review found 64 per cent of fund updates held prominent places on the fund managers’ websites, however, 26 per cent weren’t prominent and in 10 per cent of cases, the regulator couldn’t find the updates after a “reasonable look”.

The watchdog said it is concerned about the availability of those updates and their prominence, saying “there is no point in improving the content of fund updates if investors are not reading them, which may be more likely to be the case if fund updates are not prominent on an issuer’s website”.

The regulator said 53 per cent of managers didn’t identify the relevant benchmark index in the fund update, while acknowledging that the industry and FMA are in discussions about market index obligations after a consultation last year.

The FMA also said 17 per cent of managers reviewed showed materially higher fees than in the PDS, and that almost all updates didn’t say whether charges included or excluded GST. It said the GST issue needs greater clarity in the law, and said it will do further research to work out the discrepancy in fees.

Serves 6-8 1.5kg Quality Mark Corned Beef Silverside 1 onion, skinned and cut in wedges 1 Granny Smith apple, peeled and cut in wedges 4C ginger beer 1T Dijon mustard 1T brown sugar ■ Rinse beef in cold water. Place onion and apple in a large saucepan and stand beef on top, pour ginger beer over. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer gently for 2-2 1/2 hours until tender.

■ Remove beef and score fat into diamond shapes. Mix mustard and brown sugar together and spread over. Grill 4-5 minutes until golden.

■ Serve with the ginger and mustard sauce.

Ashburton Combined Friendship Club One new member was inducted.

As it was 50 years to the day since the sinking of the Wahine, Errol gave an outline of the weather and movements of the ship leading up to it hitting Barrett’s Reef and the subsequent loss of the ship and over 50 lives.

Club member Lynn Kingsbury and his wife Jill were survivors, ending up on at Eastbourne. Errol conducted a question and answer session with Lynn on the events that day. One of the most striking things to come out of this interview was how much better communications and weather forecasting are these days.

Lynn and his wife were travelling to the North Island for a holiday and they did carry on with their holiday!

Our main speaker was Sam Winterbourn who reflected on education after 40 plus years in teaching and a long period as principal of Borough School. Children starting school today may live in the 22nd century and we have no idea what that world will be like.

In Sam’s view, knowledge is only what we know now, is changing rapidly and can easily be acquired via the internet.

Schools should be developing thinking skills that will help their pupils adapt to future change.

The need to know has gone, the need to think is more important and change is constant and getting more rapid.

A newcomer to the club, but not to the sport, Tim Ryan can expect an invitation to move to the more competitive Coronation club in the near future. Ben Thomas, Aaron Hunter, Richard Pearce and Graeme Erskine can also expect the proverbial “knock on the door”.

With the number of improvers it is hard to pick out one for special mention but this week Phoebe McKenzie not only beat but absolutely annihilated her previous personal best with an excellent 95.3. Susan Peattie got no love from the markers and emerged with an 89 on a target which appeared to be worth a much better score.

Mid Canterbury inaugural open championship this week will provide an opportunity for many to test themselves very early in the season.

Ashburton Golf Club The weather was kind to us last weekend at the Brandon, it all kicked off early with the ladies holding their open tournament on Friday, which was kindly sponsored by Taverndale and Partners.

A good size field enjoyed the course and the company, and by the looks of the photographs, the wine as well.

Well done to all the winners and the organisers. Saturday saw the second qualifying round for club champs, and Neil Macdonald threw down the gauntlet, showing that he wants the intermediate trophy back in his cabinet, with a great round of nett 67.

Then on Sunday Nicky and Dave Gill stormed into the final of the White Trophy where they will lock horns with Hilary Ward and Paul Greer on Sunday week. Should be a great game.

This Saturday, we have the Murray Webb Trophy which is a 4 ball nett game and a qualifier for the Watson Cup. The top 16 scores go through into the matchplay rounds, which start next

Mid Canterbury Central Friendship Club President Barry Quantock welcomed 71 members and two visitors to our April meeting. He then inducted new member Alan Kingsbury into the club.

Our mini speaker was Ron Donaldson.

Ron’s father served in the Pacific Islands during the war then purchased an 860 acre farm in Mid Canterbury.

Ron attended Ashburton Tech and then worked on the family farm before becoming a shearer in Canterbury.

Some years later he moved back to Mid Canterbury working for Caltex pumping fuel from the rail depot, and later driving diesel fuel tankers.

Ten years later he purchased a 64ha farm in North Canterbury running a Friesian stud. Eventually he moved to a block at Winchmore. After seven years he again moved to a small dairy farm on Mitcham Road before retiring to Ashburton.

Sandi explained that the foundation was the brainchild of the late Neil Sinclair with the aim of making our district a stronger and better connected community through private philanthropy.

Today the foundation employs three staff supported by a voluntary subcommittee of 19.

A donor of $50,000 or more can create their own named fund for their chosen purpose, while lesser amounts go into the community fund.

They currently have invested funds of over $10m and bequests over $29m.

Some activities they support include

scholarships, training workshops for doctors and nurses, the hospital upgrade, early identification of children with learning disabilities and the purchase of Trott’s Garden.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club President Val Johnson opened the April meeting of the Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club held recently. After the National Anthem was sung members and a visitor were welcomed, also birthdays were celebrated.

Trips Convenor Avis Kingsland asked members if they would be interested in an overnight stay in Kaikoura. The Mini Speaker was Heather Mowatt who told us a little of her life. She was born in the Orkney Islands and came out to New Zealand in her early childhood.

She went back to Orkney when a little older and spent some time at a school there.

Returning to New Zealand she completed her nursing training and went back again to Orkey to work, and met her husband there. They returned to NZ and had two sons, and lived in Leeston, Central Otago and Ealing before moving into town in 2001.

Heather has done volunteer work, also worked making kites and as a resthome carer. Orkney was the site of a Royal Navy base at Scapa Flow, which played a major role in World War One and Two. After morning tea Julie Begg introduced Karen Hall from Hospice. Karen advised that Hospice is a programme designed to provide palliative care and emotional support to the terminally ill in a home or home-like setting so that quality of life is maintained and family members may be active participants in care.

They encourage the community to be part of the journey. They have many volunteers including trained biographers who write down a person’s biography or letters. They also have counsellors and a person who gives massage of the hands or feet.

Home support is provided if required, this allows carers to go out. Their office is in Community House but they would like a building of their own. They raise their own money, and now have a shop in Tancred Street that sells clothes and knick-knacks.

Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboard Club The club members and visitors who attended April club night were treated to an evening of great music. The programme arranged by Elizabeth McCormick started with Rose playing piano as we all arrived.

There were five players, Barbara Harris, Karen Smith (nee White), Rose Stead and Audrey Ritchie (alias Mickey and Minnie Mouse), Michael Kingsbury and

Ann Allott plus one story teller, Bev Stevens who kept us entertained and amused. Where do you find those stories?

It is quite amazing how we never hear the same songs repeated during the evening. Some songs bring back memories for example Say it with music, Thanks for the memory and Vaya Con Dios. Other tunes included Tell me why, Back in your own Backyard, Hallelujah, And the band Played Waltzing Matilda.

Mickey and Minnie Mouse played for us Waves of the Ocean and Playful Rondo on the piano while Ann Allott, on the digital piano, played Irish Heather, What A Friend and Mama’s Song. Altogether most enjoyable.

Thank you Elizabeth and all the entertainers for a wonderful evening.

Grey Power Ashburton On Monday April 16, Trevor Gamblin welcomed 40 plus members to the monthly meeting of Grey Power Ashburton. Margaret entertained on the piano while members assembled.

Trevor then covered a few points from the latest Federation magazine; the retirement of Tom O’Connor; cheap ink cartridges for printers and turmeric supplements; he also advised members that the ADC Long Term Plan is available and rates rebates should be applied for if eligible.

Trevor then introduced our speaker for the afternoon, Tina Mitchell the Deputy Banking Ombudsman. Tina welcomed the opportunity to speak to us, as it had enabled her to visit with family in Darfield over the weekend.

With the help of a Power Point presentation Tina explained the activities of the Banking Ombudsman in the resolution of problems that people may have with banks.

She followed this with some interesting stories of scams that affect up to one million people in New Zealand every year, involving a figure of twenty million dollars. Her advice was, if you think you are being scammed report it to Netsafe.

Trevor passed a vote of thanks and presented Tina with a fruit tray.

The raffle was drawn and prizes distributed. Trevor passed a vote of thanks to Brian Early who assisted on the raffle table.

Trevor closed the meeting at 3.05 and afternoon tea was served.

Our next meeting will be on Monday May 21 where the speakers will be Councillors Selwyn Price and Diane Rawlinson.

Imagine training for the Commonwealth Games only to fall ill and have to watch your team win a gold medal without you. That was the harsh reality for Black Fern forward Ruby Tui, who was left to watch her team’s stunning gold medal victory over Australia from the couch after being diagnosed with mumps. But instead of sulking in the disappointment of missing out on a gold medal, Tui “loved every minute” of watching her team win the women’s sevens final, describing it as the “most enjoyable” game she had ever watched.

Pendarves equestrian Harriet Redmond has capped off a stellar season by making the top 10 in her class at a prestigious Australian horse show.

The 23-year-old nursing student manages studies around her show team, which also had success at the New Zealand Horse of the Year Show in Hastings.

Redmond rode Lakeview Lone Desire, affectionately known as Puzzle, to win the Ridden Pinto Show Horse of the Year in Hastings. The 10-year-old is owned

by Jodie Lockwood and also competes in dressage.

“He is a really cool horse and it was great for him to win.” The pinto was runner-up in the class last year.

Straight after the show she and another horse Ngahiwi Frostie, were on a plane to Australia to compete in the 2018 Show Horse Council grand nationals showing championships. The pair were selected for the New Zealand team on the back of good performances through the season.

The Australian show featured over 500 competitors from across Australia and New Zealand.

Redmond said Frostie travelled well to Sydney and the flight was a lot shorter than the road trip to Hastings. They were among 40 elite combinations in the saddle hunter class, which was then narrowed to 10 finalists, including the Kiwi pair.

Redmond said it was a big achievement to be named as a finalist as all the horses in the category were classy. “It was pretty amazing to get there.”

Frostie is a Gisborne-bred horse, the line more known for its showjumping and eventing success.

Redmond said the horses’ good temperaments were key to their success. “They are clever and want to try for you, and they enjoy the work.”

Celtics buck Milwaukee Aron Baynes’s Boston Celtics are just two wins away from eliminating the Milwaukee Bucks from the NBA playoffs after dominating game two of their first-round series. The Celtics won 120-106 in Boston to take a 2-0 lead. Milwaukee will host games three and four and Celtics coach Brad Stevens warned his players not to relax. “If we don’t play with an edge we will get beat by 30, so we better play with an edge, play competitive and be tough.” - AAP

Marsters stays at Tigers Dynamic Wests Tigers NRL centre Esan Marsters has signed a new deal for a further two seasons.

Marsters, who has shone in the Tigers’ 5-1 start to the 2018 campaign, will stay on with the club until at least the end of the 2020 season. Since his top-grade debut last year in round 13, the 21-year-old has played 19 matches for joint venture.

CLUB NEWS Ashburton Writers’ Group President Julie welcomed members to the April meeting of the Ashburton Writers’ Group held recently.

There was discussion on the Short Story and Poetry Contest for children to be organised shortly.

The assignment for the meeting was “Dear Diary”. Members wrote of a stalker and eating disorder.

Deb gave an instant exercise, it was to begin with “Hello”. Members wrote of other side – black dog, old boyfriend, blonde Adonis and dirty car.

While members were thinking of future assignments, afternoon tea was served. The meeting concluded at 2.45pm.

The May assignment is “If you were granted an extra day in the week, how would you fill it?”

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club March has been quite a busy month for some of our members. At the beginning of the month we had two members take part in the national women’s triples at Palmerston North.

Karen Stephen was in the winning team, and Karen Bensdorp was in the team that won the consolation section.

We had four members take part in the National Triples the same weekend and Richard Browne was in the team that came third.

Karen and Neville Bensdorp were in the team that was second in the Plate consolation. Richard Browne also won the Pointing contest.

Our Ashburton Doubles were held on March 10 and this was won by Stephane Montel and Bastien Montrodon from Christchurch. We had two players come third and 15 others

earning a place in various other sections.

On the 24th March we had our club drawn doubles and this was won by Rewa Kyle and Jonathan Crum who

Harry Kane ignited his bid to reel in Mohamed Salah in the race to finish top scorer in the Premier League by grabbing his 26th goal of the season in Tottenham’s 1-1 draw at Brighton yesterday.

With four games left, the striker moved to within four goals of Salah, who may yet miss some matches in the runin because of Liverpool’s involvement in the semi-finals – and maybe final – of the Champions League.

Kane has won the Golden Boot the past two years, and finished last season with seven goals in his last two games.

The England international benefited from determined work near the byline by Son Heung-min to drive in a shot that deflected into the net in the 48th minute, enlivening a game that failed to sparkle in the first half at Amex Stadium.

Brighton equalised within two minutes, with playmaker Pascal Gross converting a penalty following Serge Aurier’s trip on Jose Izquierdo. The foul happened just 18 seconds after the restart.

The point inched Brighton closer to securing a second straight season in the Premier League, eight points clear of the relegation zone with four matches remaining.

Yvonne Willering is urging Netball New Zealand to review all aspects of the sport at a high performance level, including the selection process, not just the recent Commonwealth Games failure by the Silver Ferns.

Review ‘needs to go further’ Following a failed and disappointing Commonwealth Games campaign, Netball New Zealand announced that they would hold a “comprehensive” review into the Silver Ferns.

But former Silver Ferns coach Yvonne Willering has urged Netball New Zealand to veer away from taking the “easy road,” and says the review needs to look far beyond just the current national team.

“I don’t want us to just take the easy road,” Willering said.

“I think they need to look beyond the Silver Ferns, they need to have an overall review … this isn’t just about the current Silver Ferns, we’ve got to look beyond that.”

“They [Silver Ferns] didn’t play to their full potential, you’ve got to look at that reasoning as well ... you’ve got to look at the leader-

ship group and how honest they were. It’s not just one aspect.”

Although the Silver Ferns’ results at the Commonwealth Games were undoubtedly disappointing, they weren’t surprising.

Over the past six months, the Ferns have slowly fallen into a downward spiral, losing multiple times to their three biggest rivals England, Jamaica and Australia.

Current Silver Ferns coach Janine Southby has only maintained a 51 per cent win rate since taking leadership of the national team, and has been widely criticised by former players, coaching staff, and fans.

However, Willering, who led New Zealand to a silver medal in the 1998 Commonwealth Games, says she believes there were multiple issues that contributed to the Ferns’ demise that reached beyond Southby.

She says that Netball New Zealand needs to review all aspects of the sport at a high performance level, including the selection process, or she feared for the future of the Silver Ferns brand.

“I hope that the panel, whoever they may be, look beyond just the Silver Ferns and look at the game as a whole, I don’t think there’s just one aspect to it,” Willering says.

“They need to have an overall review because if the players aren’t strong enough, through the way players are selected, and if there are no better players left behind, then we have to look at how we can get more elite players.”

“A huge aspect of the Ferns’ selection is fitness related, and obviously fitness is vital without a doubt, but it’s in combination with what happens out on court as well. A fit player doesn’t nec-

essarily make a great player, and I wonder if maybe the focus has changed a lot.”

“It’s out in the open now that we’re losing numbers, and now with the Silver Ferns not succeeding that’s obviously how most people gage the sport by, we could actually lose more people and that’s an issue that needs to be addressed.”

Netball New Zealand President Jennie Wyllie said in a press conference on Tuesday, that they were very disappointed with the Ferns’ placing at the Gold Coast games.

Wyllie said that they were committed to ensure the Silver Ferns could achieve at the highest level again and would strive to resolve any issues identified in the review.

The findings will be presented to the Netball New Zealand Board in early June.

Laura Langman ‘treated appallingly’ Shunned Silver Fern Laura Langman would have got New Zealand closer to a medal at the Commonwealth Games, according to former Aussie great Liz Ellis.

Writing in Players Voice, she said Netball NZ should have made an exemption for Langman, rather than exclude her for playing in Australia.

Langman played 141 consecutive games for the Silver Ferns before moving to Australia to play.

Players from England, Jamaica and elsewhere in the Australian league were learning to play with the intensity of the Australian team.

Liz Ellis New Zealand are suffering because they’re not part of it.

“It was unbelievable to me that New Zealand missed out on a medal on the Gold Coast, and that they almost didn’t make the finals,” Ellis said.

“But I wasn’t exactly shocked because New Zealand no longer have their best players playing in the best league in the world – week in, week out. There is no doubt that their Commonwealth Games performance suffered as a result.

“Not only did New Zealand decide to retreat across the ditch to their own domestic competition but they basically deemed that anyone who played in our competition wasn’t able to represent the New Zealand national team.

“So that meant they missed their best player in Laura Langman, who I think has been treated appallingly by their governing body.

“I think she would have got

them a lot closer to a medal.

She’s a superstar who was one of the best players in the Suncorp Super Netball league here last year.”

Langman should have been a special case, she said.

“Laura Langman has played 141 tests for the Silver Ferns and had not missed a test match since her debut in 2005. And suddenly they’ve said ‘no, you’re playing in Australia, you can no longer play for the national team’.

“I think you can make an exemption for a player who has played that many consecutive test matches for New Zealand.

You only need a bush lawyer to tell you that.”

Sheriff’s Jewels lead-up quiet Nigel McGrath is going to stick with a proven formula of success with New Zealand Derby winner, Sheriff.

And that means that harness racing fans may only see one of the real rising stars of the sport on more occasion before the Harness Jewels at Cambridge on June 2.

Understandably, the tough colt took a couple of days to get over his New Zealand record-breaking performance in the premier Group One for three-year-old pacers and his trainer has been in no real rush to bring him right back up to speed.

“He was tired for a couple of days, as you could probably imagine,” he said.

“But he really only had three days off and I’ve just kept him ticking over here at home.”

McGrath is adamant that the best of Sheriff comes when he’s lightly tried and for that reason he’s thinking he might only need to line him up once in the month of May before heading north to prepare for the 3YO Emerald at the Jewels.

And that’s likely to be at one of the Premier meetings at Addington next month.

“He’s not really a horse we’ve asked a lot of in terms of racing him frequently, but we’ve got the

Almost a fortnight on from one of the biggest nights of his training career, McGrath admitted to still having to pinch himself at times.

“There’s points where I have to stop and think about it to believe it’s real,” he said.

“The Derby has always been a race I’ve wanted to win and I’ve gone close a couple of times and had some perform pretty poorly in it too, but it’s a great feeling to have ticked it off.

“You’re in the game for those sorts of moments, it will take a while to completely get over the thrill of it all.”

Loved uncle and nephew to many. Ian passed peacefully at Christchurch hospital surrounded by his family. A funeral for Ian will be held in the Salvation Army Hall, 20 Henley Street, Westport on MONDAY, April 23 at 1.00pm.

Winning roll continues Mid Canterbury United’s top women’s football team has continued its cracker form of last year into the 2018 season.

The side was unbeaten last year in Mainland Football’s division two competition and was promoted to division one this year, where they are two from two after beating Nomads 3-0 in the first round and FC Twenty 11 9-1 last weekend.

Coach Angela Perkins said the team scored more than100 goals last season and was ready to move up.

Results so far have been convincing, though the season is just beginning. Mid Canterbury takes on Coastal Spirit this Sunday at Cuthbert’s Green in Christchurch.

Perkins, who manages and coaches alongside Fran Clark and

Maikel Vallejo, said the 16-player squad had been training twice a week since February, with sessions indoors at EA Networks Centre and outdoor at Argyle Park.

“This year we have a much younger team with a couple of older experienced players not ready to hang up the boots just yet.

“We are hoping that next year

we can get a second team for those that really should hang up their boots or just want to try something new and meet people.”

The Mid Canterbury club has also entered an 18th grade girls’ team in the youth competition on a Saturday.
