Politicians paintballed Labour’s Jo Luxton and National’s Andrew Falloon took some hits at the Allenton School fair, but are hoping voters will be kinder to them come election day.

Election lead-up brings Peters here BY SUSAN SANDYS

Victory for BaaBaas P24
Winston Peters copped flak for avoiding a recent televised multi-party leaders’ debate, but will front in Ashburton. The New Zealand First leader will address a public meeting this week, as part of an assault on Labour’s water tax proposal. Irrigation New Zealand and a group of Mid Canterbury farmers say this district would be the most impacted of any other area in New Zealand and are hosting key politicians as they battle the proposal. Prime Minister Bill English attracted about 400 people last week when he spoke at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. Spokesperson for the group of farmers, Willy Leferink, said yesterday he was
pleased Peters had accepted the invitation to talk. They had not yet received an answer from Labour Party leader Jacinda Ardern. Peters would address the public meeting at the Hotel Ashburton on Wednesday, from 1pm to 2pm. “If the water tax is implemented we are going to be the most affected district in the country,” Leferink said. The “draconian” tax would seriously impact on farms and farm values. Farmers in Mid Canterbury generated about $1.5 billion gross income per year, and about half of that was spent locally. “We see New Zealand First as an ally in opposing these silly taxes if Labour would win the election next week,” Leferink said. Peters will no doubt be hoping to se-
cure votes in this district in the lead-up to the General Election on Saturday. As his traditional position as kingmaker is coveted by other parties, ACT yesterday put the boot in, reminding people Peters had not made it through a full three-year term in any ministerial portfolio. “And he never will,” ACT leader David Seymour said. “He has been avoiding public debates on TV and in his electorate. He was incoherent on Radio New Zealand last week, and proved his performance and his policies can’t bear 20 minutes of scrutiny, let alone three whole years,” Seymour said. “A vote for New Zealand First is a vote for instability and a vote for a government that’s doomed to collapse, whether National or Labour-led.”
