A popular Ashburton smoko spot is taking cigarettes off the shelves for good after a middle of the night break-in this week. Riverside Foodbar owners Margaret and Neil Chapman received a call at 1.47am on Thursday morning from their security company advising them that their shop had been broken into. The glass section of the door

to the shop had been smashed open, littering the floor with pieces of glass which even punctured an energy drink can on a nearby shelf. Once inside, the burglars stole cigarettes, lighters, loose cash and a prize for the Ashburton Lions Charity Golf Tournament. “We’ve been here 16 years and this is our third break-in, and the first in about 14 years, we had a couple in the first years we

owned it but nothing after that,” he said. “We got the call at 1.47am from Masterguard and we came to check it out and called the police. “They have taken just cigarettes and some loose cash. I also had a prize ready for the Lions Golf Tournament which was a couple of Stanley jemmy bars.” Earlier this year the business moved into its new building after the previous premises needed to

be repaired due to earthquake damage, and at that time the couple had even considered not stocking cigarettes. “Prior to moving in to this building we were weighing up selling cigarettes in the new shop,” he said. “We have refrained from selling any of that vape stuff, and after last night we have made the decision to not stock cigarettes anymore.

“I think there is only one other place in Ashburton that has made that decision and it is a tricky one, there will be a few guys in the area that will be disappointed but it is just not worth it. “We will still do what we are good at and that is food.”
