The Ashburton Domain Oval Pavilion has been cleared for use while discussions continue about who actually owns the building. The Ashburton District Council redstickered the building at the start of the month, saying it needed serious maintenance and that blocked drains had allowed water to seep in. The pavilion and indoor cricket nets on the southern side are used by Mid Canterbury Cricket; the Ashburton Athletics Club also uses it to store gear.
Mid Canterbury Cricket spokesman Mike Southby said the red sticker was removed on Monday and the pavilion, toilets and indoor nets were able to be used again. “It has some restrictions still, in terms of the number of people in the building and there is obviously some maintenance work still to be done when the issue of ownership is resolved,” he said. The sporting organisation has already held one working bee to clear out gutters and deal with other overdue maintenance so the building could be fit for use as the summer season for cricket

and athletics begins. There was plenty of goodwill in the community for the building, which also includes a stage and soundshell, he said. Cricket is providing free labour for repairs while local businesses are offering their services for free. The problem remains a lack of money to buy material for the work and Mid Canterbury Cricket, like many other volunteer groups, is financially strapped.
