Local trapped after quake

A relaxing weekend away quickly became a terrifying ordeal for an Ashburton mother after she was stranded in Hanmer Springs.

Trudi Elliott intended to spend last weekend at the holiday destination with a friend.

However, after Monday morning’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake, the trip turned into a nightmare.

Elliott said glasses were shaken on to the floor, drawers and cupboards swung

open and they thought the ceiling fan in their motel room would fall down.

She couldn’t get out of bed or walk around because of the fierce shaking.

“The earthquake was really, really scary. My friend and I were both terrified.

“With the first earthquake I didn’t think it was going to stop, I thought it would just keep going and going until it had us,” she said.

After a sleepless night they went for a walk to investigate the extent of the damage.

She said the motel owner invited them

into her lounge, which had been trashed by the quake.

Shops around the town had stock damaged and thrown on to the floor.

“The liquor store was quite a mess,” she said.

However, there wasn’t any major damage to the town and Elliott believes it was down to the buildings being relatively new and up to code.

Business closure sees jobs lost

A slowdown in Ashburton’s building industry is being blamed for the closure of an Ashburton frame and truss business.

Helmack ITM will close this section of its business today, putting seven people out of work.

Making the decision to shut the frame and truss division was a tough call but it was a business decision that couldn’t be avoided said Glen Bateman, regional manager Ashburton and Timaru.

“We’re going to restructure it all to one site. We have to pull back now so we can move forward and that’s tough because these are a good bunch of guys,” he said.

The company will consolidate the Ashburton work on its Kaiapoi site.

It might be a decision based on the bottom line, but putting people off was a very tough call all round, Bateman said.

“We’re well aware that this sort of thing has a big social impact too.”

The closure may not be permanent, he said as the company hasn’t ruled out starting the frame and truss business up again in Ashburton if building business lifts, Bateman said.

“This doesn’t have to be a forever move. It’s about getting through the quieter time and when things blossom again we could start up again.”

Former owner if the company Alan McCormick said that while the department was an integral part of the business, it was an area where it had always been difficult to make money because of competition from bigger companies chasing market share.

Over the past few years the number of businesses producing frames and trusses had dropped from around 160 to less than 100, he said.

The number of building company collapses also impacted heavily on suppliers, McCormick said, with two carving several hundred thousand off his bottom line prior to the sale of his business.

Eventually the road opened on Monday afternoon, but they only had a three-to-four hour window to get out.

Elliott made it back to Ashbur-

ton on Monday afternoon and said her friend vowed he would never go back to Hanmer Springs.

Since then she has been struggling to sleep.

“When I was there I couldn’t sleep. I would be just about to fall asleep and then an aftershock would wake me,” she said.

But it was the kindness of the

Hanmer community that has stuck out for Elliott.

The motel owner at Hanmer Springs offered to give them a room free of charge if they were forced to stay.

“Civil Defence was really good as well, they made sure to update us every couple of hours,” Elliott said.

Evacuations as fears grow in Wellington Emergency services are responding to reports of another building with structural issues in central Wellington.

A police spokesman said police and fire services are at an open carpark on Tory Street, between Wakefield St and Courtenay Place, in the Wellington CBD at a building that “involves an issue of structural stability”.

A staff member at Mama Brown’s restaurant on Wakefield St said part of the road had been closed, and seven fire trucks were outside the car park building near Reading Cinemas.

Wellington Mayor Justin Lester told media the Reading carpark has been added to the list of buildings with serious structural damage.

Residents were ducking through the cordon with bags of hastily packed belongings as the fire service evacuated them from the area.

Police had to call out to residents who stopped to take photos inside the cordon while being evacuated.

Reading carpark is the latest in a number of buildings in the capital

to cause concern, although many have now been cleared for residents to return.

Earlier, two buildings in central Wellington were cordoned off due to concerns.

Rob Zorn lives beside the affected building on Tory St, and has had just a couple of minutes to gather up some belongings in a suitcase and evacuate his apart-

ment. He was feeling “really frustrated”.

“Look, it’s nobody’s fault but it’s really, really inconvenient,” he said.

But he saw the need for the evacuation. “I’d rather be inconvenienced than dead.”

Zorn said he was “worried” and didn’t know how long he’d be out of his home.

Hail brief, but damage lasting

Almost before the first hailstones hit the ground in Ashburton on Wednesday, Kieran Breakwell’s phone started ringing.

Vehicle owners, burned by the massive 2008 hailstorm that saw a cleanup job running over seven months, were lining up yesterday to have their vehicles checked for damage.

“We had calls within minutes and they haven’t stopped since,” Breakwell said.

Unlike the major damage caused eight years ago, Wednesday’s hailstorm appeared to have inflicted smaller dents that were often difficult to detect.

“In talking to people, a lot are saying they haven’t got any damage, but it’s there, it’s just hard to see. Our advice is to come in and get it checked, let us look at it under the lights.”

Hail damage repairs were covered by insurance Breakwell said and the risk people ran if they didn’t have their vehicle checked was that when they decided to sell a year or so down the track, the damage would be spotted by a canny car dealer.

He’s not anticipating a massive influx of vehicles this time, unlike 2008 when he said there were several thousand on the waiting list for repairs.

The number of calls, however, has been large enough for Breakwell to push the button and call in out-of-town hail repair experts.

“The minute the hail started I phoned these guys and Mark will be calling in more guys as they’re needed.”

Mark Tewnion from Smart PDR is already on site and he’s here for the long haul. That long haul, however, is unlikely to be the seven-day-a-week work that lasted for seven months.

For him, cleaning up from the Ashburton hailstorm is just another day at work. His crew travels internationally on demand and for jobs on home turf, he has the ability to pull in repair teams from a range of countries.

“What we’re seeing initially is not bad, but it’s damage that needs fixing,” he said.

He anticipates most repairs will be five or six hour fixes and most will be done using a gluing method that lifts out hail driven depressions.

Land moves 10m, new faults found Previously unknown faultlines have been discovered by geologists surveying which fault lines ruptured in Monday’s devastating Kaikoura earthquake.

GNS Science geologists Nicola Litchfield and Pilar Villamor say several faults ruptured during this week’s magnitude 7.8 tremor, and some were previously unknown.

They are calling the destructive quake a “very complex” tremor, which left the earth violently fractured along faultlines.

The geologists, who flew over the South Island’s eastern coast, said the first rupture was the Kekerengu Fault, which they followed from the beach inland to

Bluff Station. “Here, the earthquake dislocated hills, fences, roads, buildings and the river bed, some by as much as 10m horizontally. A house was also spectacularly moved off its foundations – the occupants were shaken up, but otherwise okay,” they posted on the GNS website.

Further south, the road and railway line had shifted 1m at Waipapa Bay. The road had been offset by a similar distance along the Hope Fault. Other scientists who had flown along the faultline earlier reported no other disturbance of the land.

When they surveyed the Hundalee, Emu Plains, and The

Humps fault zone there was evidence the fault had disturbed State Highway 1 and the railway line as well as the beach south of Kaikoura.

As they approached the epicentre the geologists found the earth ruptured along new faults.

“We then flew to the epicentre area [The Humps fault zone and Emu Plains] and found fault ruptures on the north side of the Waiau River, some on previously unknown faults.

“It was less clear exactly how these faults had moved compared to the others further north, but it looked like some horizontal movement had occurred.”

Celebrating cultures

More than 200 students performed in this year’s Hakatere Festival yesterday.

Nine groups from seven Ashburton schools displayed a variety of cultural performances to more than 100 of their friends and family at the Ashburton College Auditorium.

The Hakatere festival celebrates different cultures and this year the groups gave kapa haka, Pacifica and multi-cultural

performances. Hakatere Festival organiser Amy Huggins said it was “definitely” not a competition but a way to bring people together.

“It’s about celebrating our culture and community.”

Some groups had started practising for the festival at the start of the year, she said.

The festival featured performances from Allenton, Netherby, Hampstead, Ashburton Intermediate, St Joseph’s, Ashburton Borough and Ashburton College.

Artworks set to go under the hammer

The results of two weeks of painstaking work have been carefully lifted and relocated ahead of Sunday’s auction of the 15 pieces of art that were created during this year’s Sculpture Symposium.

Those sculptures are now displayed on the Ashburton Domain’s Long Lawn where they are being carefully scrutinised by potential buyers.

During the two working weeks there was a steady stream of people watching the craftspeople turn blocks of stone into works of art and on Sunday they will have an opportunity to claim one of those for their own.

The auction will be part of a family festival run by Ashburton Altrusa. This event starts at 11am with the first of the sculptures going under the hammer at 1.30pm.

And no one could be happier with this year’s event than Ashburton District Council open spaces manager David Askin.

“There’s some great stuff that’s been created this year, even higher standard than the previous event,” he said.

Demand for blocks was high this year, with more sculptors wanting to take part than the 15 spaces available.

Safely evacuated Hundreds of tired tourists and Kaikoura residents have been safely evacuated from the earthquake-ravaged town to the safety of Christchurch. About 390 relieved tourists and locals, as well as 60 returning emergency personnel and staff, four dogs and seven tonnes of luggage, arrived at the Christchurch port of Lyttelton on HMNZS Canterbury at 1.30am yesterday. Curtain set to rise on dancers’ show Isabella Inglis leads a team of dancers during their final rehearsal for Saturday’s show, Willie McWonka and the Chocolate Castle that will showcase students from the Julie Hawke School of Dance. The Ashburton District Council is offering the community an opportunity to be involved in cleaning up our back country.

It’s holding a wilding pine removal day at Lake Camp on November 26 and needs volunteers to ensure as many trees as possible are removed from the recreation area.

Council Open Spaces Planner Bert Hofmans says removal days have been held throughout the year to eradicate the introduced species, and it is important to keep the positive work going.

“The efforts of volunteers are vital to our success in eradicating wilding trees and we are very appreciative to members of the community who come along to help out.

“We’d love to see more people join us again to get rid of this weed,” he said.

Wilding pines are an invasive introduced tree that if left unchecked can take over large expanses of the high country in a short period of time.

They present a major threat to natural ecosystems, biodiversity, farm productivity and landscape values.

Anyone interested in joining council and the Ashburton Biodiversity Working Group should bring along good footwear, gloves and a lopper if they have one.

A barbecue lunch will be provided.

The Lake Camp Wilding Tree Removal Day will kick off at 9.30am at the entrance to the lake area on the eastern side of Lake Camp.

Irrigated farms back in demand Plans for a mega irrigation storage lake in the Mid Canterbury foothills are creating interest in farm sales in the district.

Property Brokers rural business development manager Mark Lemon said the market was very aware of water issues in the region, with buyers putting higher value on land that had reliable supply and links to a pressurised irrigation scheme.

In Mid and South Canterbury, there was particular interest in the large water storage plan for augmenting the Rangitata Diversion Race for further droughtproofing the region.

The RDR’s management company has applied for resource consent to build the storage pond and a hearing is expected

to be held early next year.

Lemon said rural investors were anticipating further recovery in dairying and favourable

returns on beef and venison.

“Strategic buyers are being quick to move on the best properties, dairy and drystock, and

sale values for these are back to their level of two years ago,” Lemon said.

“However, demand is very selective and some properties have yet to attract the interest they did previously.

“The most active buyers tend to be other Canterbury farmers with a solid understanding of farming fundamentals in the region and a keen eye for expansion while interest rates remain low and other types of investors are still largely absent from the market.”

He said Canterbury had seen few forced sales of highly-indebted dairy farms during the past two years of depressed milksolids payouts.

“Bank support for individual

farmers appears to be a significant feature as everyone awaits further recovery in the payout.”

Listings have increased as the 2016-17 season gets into full swing.

The September quarter saw 27 grazing or finishing properties sold – slightly up on the corresponding 2015 period – but no dairy farm sales.

That is expected to change rapidly with several high-quality dairy units coming on to the market.

These included a showpiece farm of 159ha with good soils, efficient spray irrigation and excellent plant, on Fords Road, near Ashburton.

It was on the market for $8.6 million.

A petition against Destiny Church’s tax-free status is gaining momentum as Brian Tamaki hits back over the backlash to his homophobic sermon blaming gays, sinners and murderers for earthquakes.

The petition, on Change.org, sprung up after the self-appointed Bishop’s Sunday sermon in which he told his congregation the earth “convulses under the weight of certain human sin”.

The sermon came one day before a massive 7.8 earthquake struck central New Zealand killing two and leaving thousands stranded, with limited food, water, shelter and communication.

He also blamed a gay priest and the people of Christchurch for the devastating earthquakes that hit Canterbury in 2010 and 2011 which killed 185 people.

“The land actually speaks to God. It spews itself up after a while – that’s natural disasters.

Because nature was never created to carry the bondage of our iniquity,” Tamaki said.

The comments have attracted widespread condemnation and have been labelled homophobic.

It’s time to accept Hillary lost James Ford

t’s been more than a week since the US election result was announced, but still Hillary Clinton supporters continue to riot across the country.

What a difference a week makes and what a difference the result has had on their faith in democracy.

From those rioting and protesting to large sections of the media, the contradiction is stark.

New Zealand was yesterday mentioned in a list of nations that the president-elect insisted he was “always available to”.

Donald Trump tweeted a response to the New York Times’ suggestion that the transition period to becoming the 45th president is not running smoothly, while other world leaders have struggled to contact him.

“I have received and taken calls from many foreign leaders despite what the failing @nytimes said. Russia, U.K., China, Saudi Arabia, Japan.

“Australia, New Zealand, and more. I am always available to them. @nytimes is just upset that they looked like fools in their coverage of me, tweeted Trump.

The New York Times have been one of Trump’s harshest critics throughout his race to the White House.

Trump spoke to New Zealand Prime Minister John Key on Wednesday morning.

He offered his sympathies over the Kaikoura earthquake.

Trump had earlier called Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, the pair are said to have spoken for 15 minutes.

As the riots rage on in the US, and followers of Clinton continue to question the result, they are, in turn, heavily contradicting themselves.

When asked in the final debate if he would concede should he lose Trump replied, “I will tell you at the time, I’ll keep you in suspense.”

This caused outrage among the Clinton faithful, questioning his respect for basic democracy and a 240-year tradition.

But who’s not willing to accept the result now?

On Wednesday it emerged that 200 students from a New York high school were given permission to not attend class and join protests outside Trump Tower.

Granted, freedom of speech gives us all the right to protest, but not in this way.

Democracy isn’t riots, fires and looting, it is about respecting a democratic process decided by the people.

YOUR VIEW Retribution According to “Bishop” Brian Tamaki (apparently selfappointed) the earthquakes which have occurred in this country are retribution for some human behaviour.

If that’s the case, how come earthquakes and natural disasters occurred before our country was populated by human beings?

“Bishop” Brian maintains his status and, by all accounts does quite nicely from it solely because of his followers.

Burglars exist and do quite nicely solely because scumbags buy stolen goods.

“Bishop” Brian has made contemptible statements, burglars do contemptible things.

Burglary is mean and hurtful and so were “Bishop” Brian’s comments.

Neither burglary nor the idiotic venomous rant which spewed from “Bishop” Brian’s mouth reflect Christianity.

One can be excused for thinking that the buyers of stolen goods and “Bishop” Brian’s followers are alike – each provide an opportunity for nastiness.

But maybe one of “Bishop” Brian’s followers has discovered the Bible refers to false prophets and released the upsetting video clip as a warning about the destiny of “Bishop” Brian’s Destiny Church.

And let’s remember it is accepted that many of Hitler’s tirades apportioning blame were designed to draw attention away from some of his own characteristics.

Could “Bishop” Brian be using a similar tactic?

I learned this week that Peter Mac is actually an active member of the pronunciation police.

I’m not talking a desk-jockeyin-a-back-office member either, he is on the front line, at the coal face, rolling his eyes and muttering under his breath at offenders.

Senior Sergeant McQuarters ordered me to write about the current uprising of youth using incredibly poor English before it gets out of hand and becomes the norm.

I think the tipping point before the order/request to fight back in print came when P Diddy came across a recent university graduate who asked him, “Would youse like some fries with that”?

“Are yiz ready to order yet”? is another personal favourite of Pete’s.

Anythink and congradulations are also regularly used by offenders and I must admit the latter does drive me nuts.

Not so much when used by youth offenders but by professionals, who should know better.

I have caught myself yelling at a presenter on the telly, “there’s no bloody d in congratulations”.

So what’s the answer? When it comes to our wonderful youth, it is obvious they are very concerned about what anybody over the age of 35 thinks about them.

They love us sharing our knowledge and will sit and listen with respect. So sit them down and say, “Yo, I know youse are totes lit, but give me yiz ears for a sec Bol”.

Then read them this poem: Dearest creature in creation, Study English pronunciation.

I will teach you in my verse Sounds like corpse, corps, horse, and worse.

I will keep you, Suzy, busy, Make your head with heat grow dizzy.

Airstrike targets hospital Bombs rained down on rebelheld eastern Aleppo for a second straight day yesterday, pounding a district that houses several medical facilities, including the central blood bank, and forcing Syrian staff and patients in the only remaining paediatric hospital to cower in a basement as buildings collapsed around them.

At least 54 people were killed in airstrikes and artillery shelling across northern Syria, part of a long-anticipated offensive against rebel-held areas announced by Russia, a key ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The bombardment hit in besieged neighbourhoods of Aleppo, as well as the surrounding countryside and the nearby rebel-held province of Idlib.

Russia said its air raids were only targeting Idlib and the central province of Homs to root out militants of the Islamic State group and Syria’s al-Qaeda affiliate. But Syrian warplanes were pounding rebel-held districts of Aleppo, home to nearly 275,000 people.

Residents said the aerial campaign intensified yesterday. Syria’s Civil Defence, known as the White Helmets, recorded at least 150 raids, more than double the number of attacks on Aleppo the day

Porn star forces change An unfortunate connection to Italy’s most famous porn star has forced a name change for Disney’s Moana. The Polynesian-inspired animated film has been retitled as Oceania for its release in the European country next month.

Italian media reports the name change is due to Moana Pozzi, a famous porn star who died in 1994 aged 33. Pozzi rose in prominence in Italy for her political views as well as her film career, launching the Love Party and running for Mayor of Rome. She also starred in her own animated short about political corruption.

Pluto’s frozen heart could hide underground ocean

Police officer charged

Evidence is mounting for an ocean at Pluto, buried beneath its frozen heart.

Scientists said yesterday that Pluto may have rolled over on its axis eons ago, the result of tidal forces with jumbo moon Charon. The extra weight of an underground sea is the most likely explanation, they said.

These latest findings are based on observations by NASA’s New Horizons, which made an unprecedented flyby of Pluto last year. The spacecraft is now 365 million miles from Pluto and enroute to a 2019 close approach of another faraway orb.

Published in this week’s journal Nature, the studies focus on a basin in the left lobe of Pluto’s heart-shaped region. This basin is known as Sputnik Planitia, named after the Russian satellite that launched the Space Age in 1957.

When Philando Castile was pulled over in July, he calmly told the officer he had a gun and was licensed to carry it, according to prosecutors. Moments later, the officer fired on the motorist, and a bleeding Castile uttered his last words: “I wasn’t reaching for it.”

Yesterday, that officer was charged with second-degree manslaughter following an investigation by prosecutors, who concluded that Jeronimo Yanez was wrong to use his weapon in the traffic stop, which was seen by millions after Castile’s girlfriend streamed his final gruesome moments live on Facebook.

“No reasonable officer, knowing, seeing and hearing what officer Yanez did at the time, would’ve used deadly force under these circumstances,” Ramsey County Attorney John Choi said.

Prosecutors believe Castile never tried to pull his handgun from his pocket, and Yanez’s unreasonable fear did not justify the shooting, Choi said.

If convicted, the officer could face up to 10 years in prison.

Quake fundraiser Local band Six60 have worked quickly to turn their Canterbury concert tomorrow into a fundraiser. The band was already set to play at Hagley Park, but have collaborated with the Christchurch City Council to expand it as a Kaikoura fundraiser. Spokesperson Callam Mitchell says Christchurch has a history of using music to unite survivors of natural disasters. “No-one knows better than Cantabrians what the people stranded in Kaikoura are going through. This is our way of showing we’re united in adversity.” Up to 10,000 extra seats have been added for the show, which will also include performances from The Black Seeds, Kings, L.A.B, and Downtown Brown with Laughton Kora.

With roads to and from Kaikoura cut off, local businesses will be hard-hit.

“In Kaikoura it was whether there was any business left to conduct.”

ra businesses and those in Cheviot, Waiau, Rotherham, Mt Lyford and Ward.

The prospect of higher inflation stemming from Trump’s election promises has sent the US 10-year bond yield soaring to 2.24 per cent, its highest rate since January and well above the mid-2016 low of 1.36 per cent. Domestic interest rates have followed, with the five-year swap rate rising as high as 2.85 per cent, well above the August low of 2.06 per cent.

Turning to economic data flow, in Australia wage growth hit a new low in the September quarter, a sign that the job market is weaker than it looks. Wages across all industries rose a seasonally adjusted 0.4 per cent in the September quarter from the prior quarter and rose 1.9 per cent from a year earlier. This is the weakest annual growth in wages over the history of the series (which extends back to the late 1990s).

present, followed by retail, tourism, recreation sector. Annual job ads growth is strong around most of the country, led by the regions, with the Bay of Plenty producing the highest job ad growth.

Dairy prices continue to point to a much better season for the farming sector. After another 4.5 per cent lift in the global dairy trade (GDT) index this week, prices are more than 50 per cent higher than July levels. Fonterra upgraded its payout forecast to $5.25 (before dividends) back in September, but since then we have seen the GDT index rise another 15 per cent and the NZ dollar fall about 4 per cent against the US dollar. This bodes very well for the sector, and a payout of $6.00 or more is looking easily achievable.

There are still a few economic and political risk events to watch between now and Christmas.

Most notably, these include the Italian constitutional referendum (December 4), the European Central Bank meeting (December 8) and the Federal Reserve meeting (December 13/14). Given all of the focus on politics at the moment, the Italian referendum is arguably the one that could drive a rise in volatility.

With regard to the Fed meeting, a rate hike is 94 per cent priced in, so this is unlikely to cause much debate.

A volatile few weeks

he last few weeks have been volatile for financial markets with a high volume of newsflow, the US election surprise and locally our devastating earthquake.

From an economic perspective the earthquake will dent economic activity in New Zealand, as well as the budget surplus that we were hoping for.

To date, there has been only limited impact on listed companies, but time will tell if we see any decline on corporate earnings. It is a timely reminder of the vulnerability of our small economy, and why global diversification is crucial for all New Zealand investors.

As expected this week global markets have been dominated by news surrounding US President Elect Donald Trump. Following last week’s US election panic, equity markets have at present taken the Trump victory as good news and are looking to stronger US growth, with higher inflation and interest rates.

A more pragmatic vibe from Trump in the aftermath also helped calm markets down.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average which contains 30 of the largest and most influential companies in the US has risen since the election, hitting fresh record highs, and last week posting its best weekly gain since February 2011.

Despite the overall rise in US shares, we have seen some significant moves from different sectors of the market. There has been a strong rally in financials, industrials and healthcare, while higher

nesses with fewer than 20 workers. Joyce said larger businesses had more capacity to absorb the hit so were not included.

Companies in Wellington, Picton and Blenheim would not get access to the subsidy.

Joyce said Wellington businesses were in a different position to employers in the South Island.

“The whole of Kaikoura and a number of surrounding areas are literally out of business for a period of time,” Joyce said.

Destination Kaikoura general manager Glenn Ormsby said he was yet to discuss the relief package with his members.

But his initial reaction was that the region was hoping for more than eight weeks’ support. He hoped to get a similar level of support to Christchurch, where a six-week subsidy was later extended to nearly three months.

Some Kaikoura businesses say the level of relief may need to go further still, because they made most of their annual income over the next three months, when tourist numbers were highest.

Businesses in and around the tourist township of Kaikoura will be paid to keep on staff for at least eight weeks under a justannounced Government relief package.

At the core of the package is a subsidy to help businesses pay wages while the highways in the region are blocked by landslips.

The $7.5 million package would last eight weeks, but could be extended, Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce said.

“Hopefully we will have more information on rehabilitation of the road, more information on the state of the aquaculture industry, and that might have to extend for a period of time.”

Joyce said the package was to support businesses which were significantly affected by the closure of State Highway One and changes in the coastline, which had impacted on the fisheries business.

It was modelled on the package for Christchurch. The main difference was that in Christchurch the main issue was whether the business could physically stay open.

■ Heat a little oil in a large frying pan over a very high heat. When the pan is piping hot, add the mince and break it up quickly with a wooden spoon. Stir it

for a few minutes until brown all over. Transfer to a bowl, cool slightly then drain off and discard any fat.

■ Wipe out the mince pan and turn the heat down to medium. Add another tablespoon of oil, the onion and garlic. Stir for 5 minutes until soft and translucent.

Add the tomato paste, tinned tomatoes, stock and sugar. Simmer for 15-20 minutes or until it becomes a pasta sauce consistency. Season to taste. Add the

cherry tomatoes (if using) and simmer for another few minutes.

■ Slice the mozzarella into 2-3cm pieces. Brush a wonton wrapper with egg, and place a slice of cheese and a basil leaf in the middle. Season with salt and pepper and roll it up. Press the ends firmly with your fingers to seal. Repeat with the remaining filling. You can cut the ends off if you have lots of excess pastry sticking out.

■ Bring a large saucepan of water with a pinch of salt to a rapid boil. Add the parcels and cook for 5 minutes (or 3 minutes if using homemade pasta).

■ Combine the mozzarella parcels with the mince and spoon into warmed bowls. Top with fresh Parmesan shavings and chopped basil or parsley.

Chock full of vitamins W

hen we recorded the 40th anniversary of the Rover SD1 in the last column we mentioned that “Rover man” Ron Winchester is the proud owner a very rare twin-plenum Rover Vitesse.

Some readers said they would like to see a photo of this special car and Ron has obliged and provided one.

A picture is worth a thousand words and this one confirms what were able to say about this special car – its black and sleek.

Because of its get up and go it’s affectionately known within the Winchester family as “the vitamin”.

You can see why!

But there is one thing about the car we are sorry we can’t share with readers – the sound.

This car sounds incredible, music to the ears.

After looking into the history of the Rover SD1 we came across an interesting fact.

The SD1 was popular with the British police, particularly in V8 form.

West Yorkshire Police were the first police force to use the SD1.

When the British Police found out production was ceasing they stockpiled a number of the cars for later use.

Consequently quite a while after production stopped the British Police were putting new cars on the beat.

On May 8 1987 a pair of Metropolitan Police SD1s made the now famous Liver Run, transporting a donor organ from the M11 to the Cromwell Hospital West London, covering 27 miles in under 30 minutes.

The run was part of a Police Camera Action special broadcast in 1997, which featured the recipient who successfully survived the transplant.

Interestingly it wasn’t the first time the British Government had stockpiled Rovers.

The 3.5 litre saloon variant of the Rover P5 was a favourite of high-ranking Government ministers, and served as Prime Ministerial transport for Harold Wilson (whose Admiralty Blue Rover had a specially designed ashtray for his pipe), Edward Heath, James Callaghan and Margaret Thatcher.

June 1973 were purchased by the British government and placed in storage, to be released for government use as required.

Subsequently registered relatively new-looking P5s were still familiar sights in Westminster for more than a decade after production had ended.

ast year’s Ashburton Hop Run Festival was a fantastic event which attracted a whole lot of positive feedback, with many people saying please do it again.

We have good news – your wish has been granted – it’s happening again this year.

The Hop will be staged in the Ashburton Domain (entrance off Grigg Street) on Sunday December 4 between 10am and 3pm and feature car displays and stalls.

Entry is by gold coin and all proceeds from the day will go to the Cancer Society.

It was during Thatcher’s eleven-year tenure that the P5 was eventually phased out as a Prime-Ministerial car, in favour of the Jaguar XJ. Queen Elizabeth II also owns an Arden Green Rover P5B Saloon JGY 280, this was the registration of a car her father George VI gave her soon after she had started driving.

Apparently Her Majesty holds a valid licence but has never passed a driving test

and she has kept the car for sentimental reasons.

The Queen’s Rover is on display at the Heritage Motor Centre and was seen in a 2003 episode of BBC motoring show, Top Gear.

It’s hard to believe but production of the Rover P5 almost never happened.

One of the bosses at Rover said to designer David Bache (responsible for the P5 and P5B, the 2000, 2200 and the 3500) “with the P5 you’ve produced a very beautiful model”.

He went on to say “I know everyone is most impressed with it. But we can’t make it, you know. And I’ll tell you why we can’t make it – it’s a head-turner and the Rover Company doesn’t make head-turners”.

Thankfully his comments were ignored and the P5 got produced – just imagine how many dignitaries like Margaret Thatcher would have missed out on elegant carriages if they hadn’t!

Vintages get out and about

T

he Vintage Car Club have some interesting events coming up.

They include a Commercial Run, which leaves the club rooms on Maronan Road on Saturday November 26 at 9am and a “Posh Picnic” departing from the Ashburton Heritage Centre on Sunday 4 December at 1.30pm.

So don’t be surprised if one week you see a variety of commercial vehicles and on the following weekend some posh people in fascinating vehicles getting around and about.

Suzuki picks a green apple

T

he Celerio Dualjet has won another accolade at the annual Green Apple Environmental Awards held at Britain’s House of Commons this week.

The awards, which are organised

by The Green Organisation cover many different industries and the Automotive category is judged by the Midland Group of Motoring Writers.

Chairman of the Midland Group, Ian Donaldson comments: “This is the sixth year we have saluted the greenest cars you can buy and, crucially, enjoy owning and driving.

“Our prize winners are chosen by our 27 members whose words are read across 400 media outlets both in print and online all over the UK and beyond”.

Launched in the United Kingdom in February 2015, the supermini champion for 2016 is the car that was runner-up last year – in the shape of the petrol powered Suzuki Celerio Dualjet.

The Celerio was again up against some strong competition and impressed the judges with one commenting “It is a remarkably driveable and economical city car.”

Priced at £8649, the Celerio with its 1.0-litre Dualjet petrol engine enables it to attain 78.4mpg on the EC Combined fuel consumption cycle and achieve very low CO2 emissions of just 84g/km.

Dualjet technology positions the fuel injectors very close to the engine inlet valves and allows for a finer fuel atomisation (or mixture) which in turn provides a more effective transfer into the cylinder.

With its high levels of standard equipment, low cost of ownership and generous interior and luggage space the Celerio is proving very popular with UK customers with over 15,000 sold to date since launch.

A new sensation A

ston Martin has turned up the heat on it’s ultimate Super GT to create the new Vanquish S. Sharper styling, greater potency and increased athleticism define this latest evolution of an illustrious model line.

Baird happy to help a good cause

F

ormer Carrera Cup and touring-car champion Craig Baird is gearing up for Auckland’s upcoming Legends of Speed event at Vector Arena.

“It’s always good to come back,” said Baird while at the Highlands 101 enduro last weekend.

“We did the Gathering of Geezers function here the other night, and it’s nice to have [these events] that put something back into our own sport.

“Anything for a good cause, especially based around motorsport or children.”

Baird will be one of a long list of New Zealand motorsport stars to attend the black tie gala dinner; including Brendon Hartley, Scott Dixon, Hayden Paddon, Shane van Gisbergen, and many others from the sport’s international stage.

Profits from ticket sales to the one-off dinner will go back into domestic motorsport via funding the New Zealand Elite Motorsport Academy, as well as the drive to get the World Rally Championship to return to our shores.

The 11-time Porsche Carrera Cup champion is fresh from winning the final round of both the Australian GT and Australia Endurance Championships at Highlands Motorsport Park.

The 46-year-old praised the growth of GT racing in New Zealand, as well as Tony Quinn’s pro-am driver system.

“When you look around the world, GTs as a format is really popular.

“Quinny’s come up with a really good system, even though it probably sounds like I was moaning about it before.

“The pit-stop window; it works.

Because I’m a pro, and I can’t buy a car – and I never will.

“Whereas some of the guys up and down the pit lane are in positions to buy a car.

“Well if they want to buy a car and go racing and give them a chance at beating me, they have to push on beyond their limits sometimes, and I have to push on beyond mine, so we’re all out there doing the best we can and what it is is what it is.”

The driver though subsequently lamented the current state of New Zealand’s touring-car scene.

“It’s a shame, because we don’t have a natural touring car class here anymore.

“It’s sort of bits and pieces for whatever reason.

“But when you’ve got over 30 current GT cars on the grid, it’s pretty self explanatory.”

The inaugural one-off Legends of Speed event takes place on Friday November 25.

Week seven of Mid Canterbury Netball’s summer league offered up some exciting clashes at the EA Networks Centre Stadium on Wednesday night.

In the Business House League, Stepping Stones’ unbeaten run continued in emphatic style with a 41-21 drubbing of Tavendale and Partners.

The defeat was Tavendale and Partners’ first of the season.

Silver Thorns were also in solid form as they made light work of Talley’s Cool Chips 34-12 and proved too good for Seeds R Us for a 19-10 win.

Property Gurus also added a 22-18 win to their tally in a closely fought battle with RMF while High Raters toppled The Fly Hunnys 26-21.

In the Social Skilled League competition, One Hundred Per Cent had too much for Cunning Stunts for a 27-19 victory while S & Giggles downed Rakahe (2720).

Bench Warmers snuck by Salty Geraldine Lips (21-19), Dodgy Knees beat Balls Up 30-23, Gin and Tonic saw off Te Tahi by two (36-34) and Splash ‘n’ Buckets recorded the night’s only stalemate against Battle Dogs, finishing on 21 goals each.

Volkswagen eye championship quinella Powerhouse team Volkswagen will aim to bow out of World Rally with their third consecutive drivers’ championship one-two result at this weekend’s season-ending event in Australia.

With top driver Sebastien Ogier having already claimed the title, Andreas Mikkelsen needs to make up 14 points on Hyundai rival Thierry Neuville to claim second.

The rally will be Volkswagen’s last before exiting the sport, with the global emissions scandal forcing the manufacturer to announce their departure earlier this month despite winning four straight drivers’ and constructors’ titles.

“Four years will end after this weekend,” an emotional Mikkelsen said. “That’s the way it is, life goes on.

“Let’s try and make it a good finish for the Volkswagen team.”

In order to do that and claim second spot in the title race, Mikkelsen will need at least a top-four finish on the dusty roads surrounding Coffs Harbour.

While parts of the forest stages have been altered to accommodate for any potential standing water caused by summer’s monsoonal rains, the dry forecast could cause even bigger dust problems than usual, making vision difficult for drivers.

Mikkelsen and Neuville will also have two others ready to claim second spot in the championship if they slip up.

New Zealander Hayden Paddon is 17 points behind his Hyundai team-mate Neville in fourth, while Spain’s Dani Sordo remains an outside chance

in fifth, 24 points back on Neuville.

The winner of the rally will claim 25 points, while an extra three points are on offer for the fastest through the final stage on Sunday.

Vital seconds will also be on offer through the unique Super Special Stages held on Friday and Saturday night in the heart of Coffs Harbour which includes a raised berm turn, 360-degree doughnut corner and a jump on the beach.

Mikkelsen appeared to be in control of second position in the championship a month ago, before retiring in Spain and then crashing heavily during the Welsh Rally and finishing 12th.

In comparison, Neuville has finished on the podium in the past four races.

Andy Murray admitted a final clash with Novak Djokovic for the No.1 ranking would be the perfect finish to the season, and a dramatic victory over Kei Nishikori kept him on course for just that.

The first set alone took 85 minutes, Nishikori winning it on his fifth set point, but Murray’s well of fighting spirit never runs dry and he dug himself out of several holes on his way to a 21st consecutive victory.

It is the first time since the tournament moved to London’s O2 Arena in 2009 that Murray has won his opening two matches, and he is in pole position to reach the semi-finals from John McEnroe group.

Should he win the group, he would avoid Djokovic in the semifinals, setting up the mouth-watering prospect of a final on Sunday with the No.1 ranking on the line.

Murray said: “I think for the tournament and stuff, for everyone interested in tennis, that would probably be the perfect way to finish the year.

“For me and I’m sure for Novak, both of our goals would be to try to win the event.

“For him, whether that’s by beating me, someone else, or, for me, if it’s winning against Novak or another player, it doesn’t change for us as players.”

For all Murray’s achievements during 2016, this was the first time he had played a top-five opponent since losing to Djokovic in the French Open final in June.

And it would have been no surprise to Murray that this turned into an epic encounter.

This was his fourth meeting of the year against Nishikori and two of the previous ones, in Davis Cup in March and the US Open in September, were five-set marathons.

Murray lost the one in New York, the 29-year-old clearly fatigued at the end of a long summer that included Wimbledon and Olympic glory.

The Scot headed for the ice bath afterwards in a bid to recover for his match against Stan Wawrinka.

Even if he does not need to win the match to progress to the last four, the 200 points available could prove very valuable in the battle for number one.

Murray said: “I’m a bit tired, obviously. I was in the ice bath after the match. That helps make you feel a bit better.

“But 10, 12 hours afterwards the body starts to stiffen up.

“I’m sure I’ll be a bit sore (on Thursday). But it’s positive I get a day’s rest.”

Meanwhile, Djokovic will take on David Goffin in his final group match after Gael Monfils, who was already eliminated, pulled out with a rib injury.

In round one, a fortnight ago, Allenton downed defending champions Tech by 76 runs while Lauriston edged a 15 run victory over a defiant Methven.

Tech will be out to kick-start

their campaign but will have their work cut out against Methven, who almost caught Lauriston in round one.

Meanwhile Coldstream will be in 45-over action for the first time this season after having the

bye in week one followed by last Saturday’s fixture abandonment.

Aussie test team lacking mongrel, says Border Australia is in crisis mode.

After losing their fifth straight Test to South Africa in Hobart, the Australian unit is peering down the barrel of the first-ever three-test series whitewash defeat on home soil.

Fans were shocked as veteran selector Rod Marsh stood down after a horrible start to the summer, and now a new chairman will have to step up to the plate.

As it is still not clear who will take on the role of Australia’s head selector, Australian veteran Mark Waugh will have to take on the brunt of the responsibility in making sure Australia fields its best-possible eleven for their redemptive Test in Adelaide.

In an appearance on Inside Cricket on Wednesday, Waugh

reflected on the horror situation for selectors over the past six months.

“Our batsmen have made two hundreds in our last five tests, it’s not good enough,” he said.

“There’s going to be changes to the batting – there’s no doubt about that.”

Waugh was joined by former test stars Allan Border and Brad Haddin, who both agreed Australia’s domestic competition had faltered of late and resulted in a much smaller pool of applicants for the Baggy Green.

“It’s (Sheffield Shield) the traditional breeding ground for the Australian team,” Border said.

“When that’s strong, the Aussie team looks after itself.

“I think it’s been treated like

a glorified practice match – experimenting with balls, styles of play, pitches and different experiments. I think we need to have a look at it and how it’s played.”

South African great Shaun Pollock, who appeared in a live interview on the show, agreed the Shield competition had not produced the standard of fast bowling expected from Australia.

“If Joe Mennie was your leading wicket-taker last year, you’ve got to be worried at the standard of batting,” Pollock said.

“After this week, you can almost treat the pink ball game as an exhibition game.”

After discussing Australia’s crisis at length, host Brendon Julian asked Border and Haddin

to name their respective sides for the crucial Adelaide test starting later in the month.

“I don’t want to panic too much, but I think a new injection of players is needed,” Border said.

“I’ve heard good things about Kurtis Patterson, so I’ll put him in. I also think Callum Ferguson deserves to play another test.

Border suggested recalling wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade to the side to replace top gloveman Peter Nevill.

“I’ve put Matty Wade in because I think we need some mongrel in that cricket team – it’s been sadly lacking in my opinion.

“We just haven’t seen that Aussie mongrel we come to see.”

Remember when Pakistan were a rabble, under fire for spot fixing infringements and facing the scorn of the cricket world?

It was only six years ago.

Just look at them now, (almost) top of the world and forming a reputation as one of test cricket’s best, most resourceful teams.

Pakistan made it to No 1 earlier this year, having drawn 2-2 with England in England, only to slip one spot when India overtook them in the course of dumping New Zealand 3-0.

They have rehabilitated one of the three spot fixing offenders, leftarm seamer Mohammad Amir; continue to get runs out of the outstanding veterans Younis Khan (aged 38) and captain Misbah-ul-Haq (42); have a brilliant match winner in legspinner Yasir Shah (only one player ever has got to 100 test wickets faster than his 17 tests); quality seamers and gifted younger batsmen coming through.

Out of the embers of disgrace – and remember they can’t play in their own land since the terror attack in 2009 on the Sri Lankan bus in Lahore, so use the United Arab Emirates as a de facto, although unsatisfactory home – has come a remarkable rehabilitation.

They have a top class leader in Misbah, who began his test career at Eden Park 15 years ago and after an in-and-out period of international activity, has fashioned a peerless record as a leader.

“You always play for that pride and honour,” Misbah said yesterday.

“That’s the only thing that keeps you going through your life.

“I am really happy for my team, whatever we achieve.”

Misbah, a firm-minded Punjabi from Pakistan’s north, talks about maintaining momentum, keeping the Pakistani roll going.

He calls for discipline with the bat, not always a strong Pakistani suit, but under him there is more of it than in many periods in the past.

They won’t lack it in New Zealand, with that No 1 test ranking within reach. ‘’That’s always the big motivation. You play any sport you want to be the best. That’s what we’re looking forward to.

“We need to improve ourselves every day, every game.

“That becomes important for us.”

Hansen rolls the dice

By GreGor Paul Whatever problems armchair selectors were having trying to pick their All Blacks team to play Ireland weren’t being felt by the real selectors.

Once the fitness of all the players was assessed, it didn’t take long for head coach Steve Hansen to sign off on a team that shows five changes from the one that started in Chicago.

Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock are back at lock but Jerome Kaino is nursing a mild calf strain and hasn’t been able to slide over and take his place on the blindside.

Instead, Liam Squire will start again at No6 – as he did at Soldier Field – and Anton Lienert-Brown and Malakai Fekitoa will be in the midfield in place of the injured Ryan Crotty and George Moala.

The only one of the five changes that could be attributed to a tactical or form decision is the return of Israel Dagg to the right wing in place of Waisake Naholo.

“It is a reflection of how good a player he is,” said Hansen, on why Dagg was selected.

“We felt that Waisake [Naholo] needed a game in Chicago and Izzy had a busy season.

“If you were picking the best team every week and you had everyone physically and mentally fresh, Izzy would play every week.

“But that’s not the nature of the beast, is it?

“This is the 13th test and we have gone around the world twice in the last six, seven weeks and people aren’t mentally and physically fresh, so you have to give people opportunities to have a breather.

It was scrappy, it was messy, it was ugly.

But the Maori All Blacks have at least finished their up and down northern tour with a 26-10 victory on a cold, wet London night at the Twickenham Stoop.

In their second clash with Harlequins – following an 11-5 loss in 1926 on their long world tour – the Maori battled, the highlight being their four-try blitz in the space of 12 minutes in the first spell.

Against plucky but green opponents, including no less than five guest players, the Maori laboured, penalised heavily, losing prop Chris Eves to the sinbin late, frequently coughing up possession and unable to get their attacking flow going.

The recently crowned World Player of the Year has had a magical season during which his game management has improved out of sight and supported his electric and eclectic range of skills.

He has been mostly brilliant but, like just about every other All Black, he didn’t play well in Chicago.

Hansen’s expectation is that if

the blokes wearing numbers one to eight get their game sorted on Sunday morning, it will provide the platform for Barrett to deliver the sort of performances that have made him such an influential figure.

“We have all the confidence in the world in Barrett,” said Hansen. “His last performance, he missed two kicks and Crudes has missed two kicks when he has played and last week he kicked really well against Italy.

“It is about what we want and how we want to play and both of them are good enough to start.

“But we just think that Beauden is playing well.

“Like most of the team in Chicago, they didn’t have a great day out and he didn’t have one.

“But you would expect all of that group to play better.

“Whether that is good enough for us to win the match, we will have to wait and see.

“If we had talked about playing Cruden a couple of weeks ago, everyone would have said we were stupid. Now, because we have lost one game, everyone thinks Barrett should get chopped.

“It’s the old story, isn’t it – the people who have to make the decisions are the ones who will be judged and everyone else’s ideas don’t get challenged.

“They don’t get to see them happen because if they are not the same as ours, they don’t happen. We have got a lot of confidence in Beauden and a lot of confidence in Crudes.” - NZME

Maori All Blacks finish tour with patchy win

The scrums turned into a shemozzle, with constant collapses and resets.

After what the French would term un passage a vide for the opening 10 minutes, in which neither side did anything, fullback James Lowe scored the first of his double, giving him five tour tries from three outings.

His form has been one of the few really pleasing aspects of the tour.

He can thank some slick work from flanker Reed Prinsep and centre Matt Proctor, while for the second he found himself in space and pinned his ears back from 30m.

A long Proctor break then set up No 7 Shane Christie for a try.

The finest team try was started

by Lowe and finished by Sean Wainui, with several pairs of hands used, though there was a hint of a forward pass.

The Maori side was too good for the Harlequins in London.

The floodgates creaked open, but they were closed again as Harlequins muscled up on defence and the Maori players

floated listlessly about the pitch.

No 8 Akira Ioane was, strangely, awarded the man of the match.

He made one or two characteristic charges, but also, like most of his team-mates, too many errors to be fully satisfied with his outing.

“After the loss to Munster, we focused on regaining our feet and making improvements, but full credit to Harlequins, it was a hard-fought game,” said Ioane, who will presumably have a short break before he rejoins the Blues back home for pre-season training.

The Maori’s next match will have rather more intensity and hype, the June 17 clash with the Lions in Rotorua.

There may be a very different look to the side, and they need to give a very different performance to what they showed here.

He knows them better than most – and Brian O’Driscoll has issued a warning to his former Irish teammates about the All Blacks. “They are licking their wounds,” the former Lions skipper said. “There is no doubt they are coming ready.”

Nightingale under threat

By Michael Burgess David Fusitua could be a surprise starter against the Kangaroos on Monday.

The Warriors utility is new to the Kiwis environment but has come into contention after a strong debut against Scotland last week.

The 22-year-old scored two tries, ran for more than 200m and showed real strength and intent to carry his opposite number back into the in goal midway through the first half.

The only blip was being forced over the sideline – as Fusitua was over ambitious on a kick return – but otherwise he showed promising signs at test level.

His inclusion would raise some eyebrows, as Jason Nightingale has been a permanent fixture over the last few years on the left flank, one of the first picked in most Kiwis squad.

The Dragons winger is one of only four players in the current New Zealand side who have played more than 30 tests, and he was the leading try scorer (five) in the 2014 Four Nations tournament.

But Nightingale struggled against Scotland last week and also missed the Australia match in Coventry with an ankle injury.

There is also awareness that Fusitua offers a greater physical presence, which is vital against the Kangaroos.

Since Mal Meninga and assistant coach Michael Hagan took

David Fusitua in action for the Warriors earlier this year. over the team in May, they have emphasised size among the back five and the likes of Blake Ferguson, Josh Dugan and Greg Inglis

have created havoc in this tournament.

Fusitua would also offer more of an aerial threat on attack,

and his trademark diving touchdowns are hard to counter.

There is some concern over Jesse Bromwich, and the captain took no part in training yesterday.

But it was understood to be a precaution after his heavy workload against Scotland (more than 70 minutes), and Bromwich is still expected to start on Monday.

There is more doubt over Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, who hasn’t played since the England test in Huddersfield almost three weeks ago due to a knee strain.

He trained with the rest of the team yesterday but it could be a risk to throw the Roosters prop in after two weeks of inactivity.

After arriving in Liverpool on Tuesday, the Kiwis held their second training session of the week yesterday.

It took place at the Wigan Warriors training centre, an impressive facility in Orrell (30 kilometres outside Liverpool).

Former Warriors player Sam Tomkins was an interested observer, as he completes his injury rehabilitation.

It was an impressive session from the Kiwis, with plenty of intensity and accuracy.

While they are being written off on both sides of the Tasman, there appears to be a strong desire in this New Zealand camp to finish off the tour on a high.

They will still be huge outsiders on Monday at Anfield, but the game could be closer than a lot of people expect.

Evergreen Smith not ready to pull the pin The seemingly ageless Australia skipper Cameron Smith claims he feels fitter than ever and has no plans to call time on his glittering representative career just yet.

The 33-year-old will make his 49th appearance in the green and gold on Monday against New Zealand in the Four Nations final – 10 behind Darren Lockyer’s record.

With the Rugby League World Cup in Australia just 11 months away, there’s a real possibility Cooper Cronk, Matt Scott, Greg Inglis, who’ll all be over 30 when the tournament kicks off, could follow Johnathan Thurston into representative retirement.

Smith admits he’s unlikely to play again in England after the Four Nations decider against New Zealand at Anfield, but is open-minded about the possibility of playing on after next year’s showpiece and eclipsing Lockyer’s milestone.

“I think I’ll just carry on playing,” Smith said.

“I haven’t really looked to the future and put an end date on my representative career. It’s a huge year next year, having a World Cup on home soil.

“I want to give myself every opportunity to be involved in that and after that tournament’s finished there’s a whole off season to think about continuing

on the following year.

“I’m still contracted to the Storm in 2018.

“I’ll probably think about that after next year.

“Probably because I look after myself a bit better now. I eat a fair bit less junk food.

“Physically I feel great and mentally I am enjoying the game as much as at any other time in my career.”

Despite being on his fourth Kangaroos tour of the UK, Smith said he feels as pumped as he did ahead of his first in 2009 when he scored a late try to earn a 20-all draw with New Zealand in the opening match – the only match on English soil he’s not tasted victory in.

“I’m still excited to get a jersey and have my name read out at the start of each week when Mal names the team,” he said.

“It’s a bit more difficult now because I’ve got three young kids and my wife at home and it’s hard to leave those guys for six weeks.

“I love spending time with my family.

“But as far as playing and being around the team and playing in great stadiums and having victories, it’s still as enjoyable as when I debuted in 2006.” - AAP

Harris definite starter Tohu Harris is set to start at five eighth for the Kiwis in the Four Nations final. Unless there is a last minute change of heart from the coaching staff, the Melbourne Storm back rower will fill the crucial position, in the absence of the injured Thomas Leuluai. Harris always seemed the most logical option, and those thoughts were confirmed yesterday. The 23-yearold Harris ran at five eighth for the entire session, as the team went through various attacking and defensive drills. Harris was stationed on the left hand side of the ruck – in Leuluai’s familiar spot – with Shaun Johnson on the right.

Big money for teen Newcastle has reportedly offered North Queensland teenager Kalyn Ponga a AU$3.6 million contract after two NRL games. The Knights have tabled a five-year offer to the 18-year-old worth $720,000 annually. The deal would be potentially the biggest contract for a teenager in the game’s history.

Ponga made his NRL debut on the wing in the Cowboys’ finals win over Brisbane in September as a replacement for the injured Antonio Winterstein.

While many players claim to be enduring the toughest summer slog of their career, Hurrell means it. In Auckland, where Hurrell was previously based until midway through last season with the Warriors, the average November temperature is 16 degrees. The Titans returned to training last week at Parkwood, where the mercury reached 28, before nudging 30 degrees over the weekend. “It’s just so hot,” Hurrell said. “I’ve never had a pre-season away from Auckland.” Perhaps that is just what Hurrell needs to get the best out of his 104kg frame.

Hurrell thinks the heat on the Gold Coast might just help him run out games better.

Unbeaten filly impresses Shaune Ritchie is hoping the So You Think run can continue at Pukekohe this weekend.

The Cambridge trainer will saddle his daughter Global Thinking in tomorrow’s Listed Murdoch Newell Stakes (1100m) as the only race winner in the two-year-old feature.

That came at the filly’s only start at Ruakaka back in September and Ritchie has sourced further confidence from So You Think filly La Diosa’s Gr.1 NZ 1000 Guineas win at Riccarton last weekend.

“She’s a little professional, this filly. She’s drawn great in barrier three and she’s by the sire of the moment in So You Think,” he said.

“She’s a lot like So You Think too. She’s a miniature version – a stunning filly.”

Global Thinking, bred by La Diosa’s part-owner Gordon Calder, went into her Ruakaka debut without a trial, but Ritchie has since sent her to the trials – for a second placing at Cambridge last week.

“I didn’t trial her before racing her which isn’t generally what we do, but sometimes it works and on this occasion it did, mainly because she’s so precocious and highly professional,” he said.

“She only ran second at the trials last week, but I wouldn’t read too much into her being beaten because she had a really soft trial.

“She was a little slowly away at Ruakaka – it took her a few metres to muster some speed – so

Former Singapore galloper Sebrose is close to making his New Zealand debut. The six-year-old won five of his 22 starts in Singapore for Mark Walker before joining the Matamata stable of Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards. “He’s coming up nicely and he trialled well at Cambridge recently,” Autridge said.

“We’re looking for a nice 1400 or 1600 metre race in the next fortnight for him.” The Gr.1 Barfoot & Thomson Auckland Cup is the major target for Sebrose, who has won up to 2200 metres.

“She’s pretty much qualified

for the Karaka Million so the next step is getting black type for her.

“This race fits nicely but we’ll race her sparingly before the Karaka Million,” he said.

Ritchie will shoot for a Pukekohe feature race double tomorrow, with last-start Te Rapa winner Snow Secret a leading lightweight contender for the Gr.3 Ssangyong Counties Cup (2100m).

“This is her test, her first time in this sort of company but the tip is Leith Innes getting down to

53 kilos to ride her,” Ritchie said.

“She’s racing now better than she has in other preparations and that’s because she’s stronger.

Ohoka Punter has responded to treatment for colic. back at Hall Sr’s on Wednesday.

“All the signs are good now.

“He seemed so much better as the day (Wednesday) went on so

I gave him a light jog in the afternoon and he seemed good and bright,” the trainer said.

Ohoka Punter was supposed

to be tackling the fast-class race at Gloucester Park tonight.

Now Hall Sr hopes he condition will continue improve so he can substitute the run with fast work on Saturday morning.

“He won’t have lost much in fitness, it was just 24 hours, but I did plan on running him this week,” he said.

“The upside is he seems good again and if stays like it I’ll be able to get a really good workout into him on Saturday.

“I was so excited after the trial and then this hit.

“I thought the Inter Dominion was over at first, but thankfully getting him to the vet so quickly got us back on top of things.

“I just hope the next couple of days go well and he’s ready for a solid hitout on the weekend.” - HRNZ

Just 48 hours after a slashing Byford trial last Sunday, new trainer Gary Hall Sr had to rush the star pacer to a vet clinic where he spent all Tuesday night.

“It was colic.

“I’m so glad I picked it up really early,” Hall Sr said.

“We worked him and he didn’t quite seem right towards the end.

“Then he was clearly uncomfortable and laying down so that’s when I called the vet.”

Women’s Open on the move New Zealand Golf has made an historic announcement about the women’s Open.

The tournament will become an annual fixture on the LPGA Tour and is moving north to Auckland from Christchurch.

It’ll be played at the Windross Farm course in south Auckland and be known as the McKayson New Zealand Women’s Open.

Windross Farm has undergone a revamp and is now a top-level championship course.

In 2012, 84 per cent of Manukau Golf Club members voted for the club to move from its original Takinini site, seven minutes down the road to its new 60 ha location at Windross Farm, owned by Graham Windross.

Along with the design expertise from the likes of former New Zealand pro Phil Tataurangi, the new course came to fruition.

The tournament will receive government funding, allowing for greater prize money and securing the return of world number Lydia Ko every year and other high profile names.

“I am so excited with this announcement to bring the LPGA to my hometown in Auckland,” said Ko. “I am honoured to be the first player to sign up to play.

“It is going to be amazing for me and my family to host my LPGA friends in my country. I want to see golf grow in New Zealand and more women playing the game, so this news today is fantastic.”

The women’s national Open has long su-

perceded its men’s equivalent, largely due to Ko’s attendance.

For the past four years it has been at Clearwater in Christchurch in front of impressive crowds, with Ko dominating for three victories.

It’s the biggest announcement in the sport in New Zealand since Tiger Woods played the national men’s open in 2002.

“New Zealand Golf is thrilled with the boost for golf and the golf industry in this country and for the women’s game in particular,” said New Zealand Golf CEO, Dean Murphy.

“Inbound golf tourism brought in $329 million to New Zealand in the year ended August 2016, which was a 23 per cent increase over last year.

“The LPGA international platform will allow Auckland and New Zealand a unique opportunity to promote ourselves to a worldwide audience in over 150 countries with over eight hours of television coverage.

“We now have a chance to show off our great golf courses in this country to a massive global audience and build on the investment in golf infrastructure and tourism.

“Bringing the major women’s golf tour to this country will provide an unprecedented opportunity for all golfers and sports fans to watch some of the game’s best players in action, as well as excite young kids to take up the sport.

Sport Cook ‘will stay on’ ECB director Andrew Strauss fully expects Alastair Cook to commit to at least another summer as England captain. Cook raised apparent doubts about his long-term future in the position in an interview in The Cricketer magazine, but was quick to play down the consternation prior the drawn first Test in Rajkot. In his role as England and Wales Cricket Board director, Strauss pencils in an informal discussion with Cook at the end of each series, and he made it clear he has heard nothing from Cook to suggest he may make a dramatic exit any time soon.

Barty back on court Former teenage tennis prodigy Ashleigh Barty has made another successful return to the court. After four months out battling an arm injury, the 20-year-old Australian has charged into the quarter-finals of a $125,000 Challenger event in Asia. Wimbledon junior champion at 15, Barty is once again showcasing her talents, ousting third seed Maria Sakkari in her opener in Taiwan before beating fellow qualifier Junri Namigata 6-2 6-3 in the second round yesterday.

Budding golfers undeterred

The first of two She Loves Golf sessions hosted by Ashburton Golf Club proved a resounding success on Wednesday evening.

This year men were also encouraged to take part as 16 budding golfers braved the weather.

Club secretary Dee Murdoch said the action was brought to

a halt by Wednesday’s hailstone blast but play soon resumed when it passed.

“Considering the weather it was a lot better than we expected,” she said. “Everyone was really enthusiastic and enjoyed it.”

The nationwide promotion, which began last year, takes a more casual approach to the game.

The campaign is fronted by some of New Zealand’s most well-known sports people and celebrities, including Lydia Ko, Toni Street, Laura McGoldrick, Matilda Rice and Daisy Dagg.

New Zealand Golf marketing manager Jan Rowsell said the promotion’s focus is to up the interest and participation levels of women in golf.

“She Loves Golf is about letting women know that it’s okay to wear your gym gear on the green, play as many holes as you like and not to keep score,” she said.

“Just get out there and have a go.”

The second She Loves Golf session will run from 2pm at Ashburton Golf Club on Sunday.
