Local trapped after quake BY COLIN ENGELBRECHT COLIN.E@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

A relaxing weekend away quickly became a terrifying ordeal for an Ashburton mother after she was stranded in Hanmer Springs. Trudi Elliott intended to spend last weekend at the holiday destination with a friend. However, after Monday morning’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake, the trip turned into a nightmare. Elliott said glasses were shaken on to the floor, drawers and cupboards swung

open and they thought the ceiling fan in their motel room would fall down. She couldn’t get out of bed or walk around because of the fierce shaking. “The earthquake was really, really scary. into her lounge, which had been trashed by the quake. Shops around the town had stock damaged and thrown on to the floor. “The liquor store was quite a mess,” she said. However, there wasn’t any major damage to the town and Elliott believes it was down to the buildings being relatively new and up to code.
