With more than 350 jobs at Silver Fern Farms Fairton meatworks set to go, Mid Canterbury will see the biggest spill of workers on to the market in its history.

Hundreds of workers turned out yesterday to hear the company’s proposal to permanently close the Fairton shed following a two-week consultation process, in line with legal requirements.

However, there is little if any chance of a change of heart before the final decision is announced on May 31.

Silver Fern Farms CEO Dean Hamilton said the company’s new board made the decision a month ago in light of falling sheep numbers.

“Fairton was consistently processing over a million lambs prior to 2010.

Last season we processed under 500,000 lambs – this year we put through just over 325,000 in a sixmonth season,” Hamilton told the Guardian.

in recent years and consequently there are fewer lambs available for processing, Hamilton said.

The trend was more evident in Mid and North Canterbury because of the higher number of dairy conversions in those areas.

“We believe sheep numbers will consolidate around the current levels, but they are unlikely to expand in the foreseeable future,” he said.

Sheep processing previously undertaken at Fairton will be transferred to Silver Fern Farms’ multi-species Pareora plant, where a recent $7 million investment has ramped up capacity.

“Consolidating at one plant will provide a longer season with improved staff retention rates,” Hamilton said.

The average processing wage at Fairton this season was just

$20,000 before tax.

Last season the first processing chain operated for 25 weeks and this season 26 weeks. The second chain did not open at all.

Hamilton said up to 200 roles could be available at Silver Fern Farms Belfast, Pareora and Hokitika plants.

Meatworkers’ Union Aotearoa Canterbury branch secretary Bill Watt said most of those impacted will be up for redundancy payouts, but doubted anything positive would come out of the consultation period.

“Unless stock numbers improve there’s not much point in trying to reverse the decision,” he said.

“It’s hugely disappointing – Fairton’s been a great old shed. It’s fed a lot of kids, put a lot of students through university and paid for a lot of houses.”

They arrived grim faced, fearing the worst but hoping for the best; one hour later more than 300 meat industry employees walked out of Ashburton’s Sinclair Centre knowing they were out of a job.

That Silver Fern’s Fairton plant was closing came as no surprise to most and when the announcement was made there was barely a ripple in the packed hall.

The words “Silver Fern Farms is

planning to close its Fairton sheep meat process plant” simply confirmed what most had suspected for several years.

“At least now we know,” many said.

Employees left the hall singly, in pairs and then in a flood, clutching papers marked confidential.

The walked into a media scrum and while some simply bowed their heads and walked away, most were happy to talk about what for many would now be a jobless future.

Pelt house remains open While the news was bleak for the majority of Silver Fern Farms Fairton workers, those employed at the pelt house had a reprieve yesterday.

Silver Fern Farm’s CEO Dean Hamilton said the pelt house, which employs up to 23 workers at the height of the season, would remain open for the foreseeable future.

The Fairton site is home to the company’s sole South Island pelt house, providing pickle processing for sheep hides and salting for bobby calf pelts.

Hamilton said there were no plans in place to close the pelt house at this point. “It could remain open for a long period of time,” he said.

The future of the rest of the Fairton plant remains up in the air.

“We will look at that when the twoweek consultation period is over,” Hamilton said.

“Our priority at this point has been to talk to our staff.”

Some shook their heads in disbelief but most were resigned or relieved.

They might not have liked the outcome but many said they now had certainty – even if it was being unemployed.

“It’s been a long time coming,

we’re all gone,” one man said.

“We’re done and dusted.”

The company has called a second meeting in two weeks saying that period allowed employees to come up with options and ideas. Staff weren’t buying that.

Their jobs were gone, and apart from a handful of staff working the pelt house, those jobs wouldn’t be coming back.

And for some of the company’s long–serving employees, there was also something to celebrate about

the decision to close the plant.

“A lot of people only stayed there because of the redundancy; for the last five years this has been in the wind,” one said.

The mood in the meeting was surprisingly calm, another said.

People listened and showed little reaction to the closure news.

“Everyone knew the meeting was about closing the plant, but there were some pretty sad faces in there.”

ployee about providing finance for staff to retrain. The answer wasn’t yes, but it certainly wasn’t a no. He believes they’ll consider this option.

While Silver Fern has suggested more than 230 jobs could be available at its Belfast, Pareora or Hokitika plants, most had just one reaction – “we don’t want to travel; we’ll be looking at jobs around Ashburton.”

And among the younger staff, there were plenty of hugs of support and a feeling of solidarity.

There were no tears.

The proposed closure of Silver Ferns Fairton plant, highlighted the need for the community to be vigilant in caring for their neighbours, Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said.

“I extend my sympathy to all affected employees and their families.

I know the next few days and weeks will be difficult for you. We also need to look out for people who are struggling with the repercussions of this proposed closure and may need extra support,” she said.

Silver Fern Farms had assured her that there were processes in place to help the 370 people who will potentially be affected, should the decision be taken to close.

The Ashburton District had been through tough times in the past and people had rallied to support one another; this was no different, Favel said.

“I hope that if people lose their jobs at Fairton and live in the Ashburton District, they will be able to remain here. Our district has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country and is always in need of skilled labour.”

One-stop-shop for social services

If you were looking for help, advice or information on a community organisation, the Ashburton Raceway was the place to be yesterday.

More than 40 organisations packed into the racecourse lounge and set up business for the day, handing out information packages and chatting to visitors on the services they could offer.

The Social Services Expo was staged by Community House and designed to be a one-stopshop for anyone wanting to know more about the district’s community organisations.

Early in the day spokesperson for Community House Anna Gimson said there had been a steady flow of people visiting stalls and chatting with stallholders.

“It’s about looking and seeing what’s available and picking up information,” she said.

The organisations involved targeted all age groups with offerings from mobility scooters and aids through to Plunket.

“Early indications from people is that they’re really pleased with the way it’s going,” Gimson said.

Neighbourhood Support’s Christine Richards and Veronica Rabbitt were busy chatting with people who were keen to find out more about groups in their neighbourhood and were pleased to have secured a new contact member for an established group.

While the big rush of sign-ups had peaked, there were still new groups coming on stream, with one of the newest, Lake Hood now in the early establishment stages, Richards said.

“The new group numbers have levelled off but we are growing each year, the number of households involved is growing and that’s the main thing. There’s still a lot of work to do.”

Personal alarms were the hot topic with St John, while Ashburton’s Learning Centre’s Mary Philips was busy handing out information on the opportunities available through her centre.

CELEBRATING OUR YOUTH – Student Volunteer Week May 1-7

Student’s selfless work rewarded Taylah Burrowes has been named the overall winner of Ashburton’s recent Student Volunteer Week for her outstanding selfless work in the community.

The initiative saw young people across the district take part in various community projects as well as highlighting the good work going on behind the scenes.

Taylah started the year volunteering by selling food tickets at the Multi-Cultural Bite and went on to assist Mid Canterbury Netball run a holiday programme for primary-age children.

“She also umpires on a Saturday and for the past year she has been giving up her time on a Wednesday night to help instruct a karate class for a group of children aged between four and seven.

For her efforts, Taylah won a $50 Prezzy card. The Ashburton Youth Council (AYC) teamed up with Volunteering Mid & South Canterbury (VMSC) to support the week – held from May 1 to 7 – to encourage students of all ages to give volunteering a go.

VMSC Mid Canterbury co-ordinator Dellwyn Moylan said Student Volunteer Week was a way to acknowledge and celebrate those young people who seek to help others.

“It encourages students from primary school to tertiary institutions and alternative education facilities to get out there and give volunteering a shot.

“Young people can have a lot to offer and gain from volunteering in their local communities,” Moylan said.

Local dealers enjoying buoyant car sales

Car sales are growing and local dealers could not be happier.

Stats NZ reported this week that car sales nationwide had surged in the first quarter of 2017 and there had been consistent growth over the past year.

Senior business indicators manager Neil Kelly said there had been higher sales of both new and used vehicles in a “buoyant” market. And after adjusting for seasonal effects, the motor vehicles industry, encompassing motor vehicles and parts retailing, had a record 5.9 per cent, or $179 million, increase in the March 2017 quarter.

“The demand for cars may reflect New Zealand’s growing population, with net migration remaining at record levels into 2017, and the relatively low cost of new vehicles,” Kelly said.

Chris Hart at Ashburton’s Gluyas Motor Group said new vehicle sales had been reasonably strong this year, particularly for the Ford Ranger. Used car sales had been a “wee bit flat” which was probably due to the weather and time of year.

There was a lot of good product in the marketplace, representing “good bang for your buck”.

“There’s some quite attractive marketing being done by manufacturers on pricing and that sort of thing, which probably helps people get into a new vehicle rather than a late model used vehicle,” Hart said.

‘We are running out of medicines that work’ New Zealand’s relative isolation offers no protection from the deadly global growth in antimicrobial resistance, an Auckland University microbiologist says.

Dr Siouxsie Wiles says the country is as vulnerable as the rest of the world.

She says New Zealand has higher rates of many infectious diseases than countries like the United States, Britain and Australia, and a growing number of those organisms are becoming resistant to medicines.

New Zealanders also travel a lot, and each trip increases the opportunity to bring resistant organisms back.

“We are also breeding them here ourselves, especially by the way we use and abuse antibiotics,” she said.

Dr Wiles is a councillor with the Royal Society Te Aparangi, which has released its latest report, a summary of research on antimicrobial resistance.

Microbes’ resistance to medicines used

to treat infectious diseases is predicted to kill more than 10 million people worldwide every year by 2050 and to have major impacts on animal health.

Dr Wiles said antimicrobial resistance was not new, “but the problem is we are running out of medicines that work”.

She said the issue ranked with climate change in seriousness.

All New Zealanders could help by practising high standards of hygiene, taking antibiotics only as prescribed and not insisting on antibiotics from doctors and vets.

New Zealand has made a commitment to the World Health Organisation to have a national antimicrobial resistance action plan.

However, the Royal Society Te Aparangi report warns that the plan will likely only delay and reduce the severity of the impact in New Zealand.

Yellow-eyed penguins ‘facing extinction’ The iconic yellow-eyed penguin could disappear from Otago Peninsula within the next half-century unless there is urgent action, a new study has warned.

Researchers’ prediction models have concluded that the penguins’ breeding success will continue to decline to extinction by 2060, with rising ocean temperatures being a factor.

The study, published in the journal PeerJ, also points to where conservation efforts could be most effective in building the penguins’ resilience against climate change.

Lead author Dr Thomas Mattern, from Otago University, says his team’s predictions are conservative estimates.

They don’t include additional adult dieoff events, such as in 2013 when more than 60 penguins died.

If the recent poor breeding years from 2013 onwards are included in the simulation, Dr Mattern says, things get progres-

sively worse and the birds could be locally extinct in the next 25 years.

He says the yellow-eyed penguin features on the $5 note and on welcome billboards at New Zealand airports.

“Yet despite being celebrated in this way, the species has been slowly slipping towards local extinction,” he said.

Increasing sea surface temperatures in part explain the negative trend in penguin numbers.

However, Dr Mattern said there was a lack of data to examine the extent of human impacts, including fisheries interaction, introduced predators and human disturbance.

“Considering that climate change explains only around a third of the variation in penguin numbers, clearly those other factors play a significant role,” he said.

“Unlike climate change, these factors could be managed on a regional scale.”

No moor for Brady’s ashes Serial killer Ian Brady’s body will not be released until assurances have been given that his ashes will not be scattered on Saddleworth Moor, a coroner said.

One of Britain’s most notorious killers, “Moors murderer” Brady killed five children with his lover and accomplice Myra Hindley during a sadistic twoyear reign of terror in the 1960s.

Brady and Hindley were jailed for life in 1966 for abducting, torturing, sexually abusing and then murdering the children before burying their young victims on the bleak Saddleworth Moor near the northern city of Manchester.

Brady died aged 79 at Ashworth secure hospital in Liverpool in Monday, where he has been housed since 1985 after being diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

Opening an inquest at Southport Town Hall into Brady’s death, senior coroner Christopher Sumner said he also wanted assurances that a funeral director and crema-

Sumner told the hearing he had received a request to release the body of Brady, also known as Ian Stewart-Brady.

“I would like an assurance

before I do so that first of all the person who asked to take over responsibility for that funeral has a funeral director willing to deal with the funeral and that he has a crematorium willing and able to cremate Mr Stewart-Brady’s body,” he said.

“I also wanted to have assurance that when Mr StewartBrady is cremated his ashes will not be scattered on Saddleworth Moor. I think that’s a right and proper moral judgment to make.

“I think it would be offensive if Mr Stewart-Brady’s ashes were scattered on Saddleworth Moor.”

The court heard the serial killer had been treated by a palliative care team for the past two weeks because of his deteriorating health.

Howard-Murphy said his feeding tube was removed on May 11.

The hearing was told Brady did not wish to be resuscitated if he suffered a cardiac arrest and he was pronounced dead at 6.02pm on Monday.

Not without a fight, at least to judge by the uproar over ABC’s announcement that the Tim Allen sitcom won’t be back in the fall. A warm family comedy about a man who stays addled by the females in his life while being buffeted by cultural forces he fears undermine his manliness, Last Man Standing has long been a quiet mainstay on ABC’s Friday schedule. In New Zealand it airs on Sky channel The Box. But apparently not much longer. The show’s fate was sealed when the network decided to scrap its Friday comedies.

‘At home’ abortion pills as safe as a clinic Medical abortions done at home with online help and pills sent in the mail appear to be just as safe as those done at a clinic, according to a new study.

The research tracked the outcomes of 1000 women in Ireland and Northern Ireland, who used a website run by a group called Women on Web to get abortion pills.

The Netherlands-based nonprofit service provides advice and pills to women seeking an early abortion in more than 140 countries where access to abortion is restricted.

Ireland and Northern Ireland have some of the world’s strictest laws, often only granting approval when a woman’s life is at risk.

To use the service, women

complete an online form, which is reviewed by a doctor.

They are sent two drugs in the mail – mifepristone and misoprostol – and given instructions on how to take the pills, which have been used since 1988 to induce early abortions.

They are later asked to fill out an evaluation form.

About 95 per cent of the women in the study reported successfully ending their pregnancy; nearly all were less than nine weeks pregnant.

The researchers said less than one per cent reported side effects like nausea and fever, comparable to the rates for women who seek medical abortions at clinics where abortion is legal.

Seven women needed a blood

transfusion and 26 received antibiotics.

No deaths were reported.

Follow-up information was missing for about one-third of the 1500 women who were sent pills over three years, so some complications may have been missed.

The study was published online on Tuesday in the British journal, The BMJ. In the past decade, the group has helped about 50,000 women have a medical abortion at home.

“We now have evidence that self-sourced medical abortion that’s entirely outside the formal health care system can be safe and effective,” said Dr Abigail Aiken, an assistant professor at the University of Texas at

Playboy model to face charges over photo A Playboy model in the US has lost an effort to dismiss a criminal charge for taking a photo of a naked 71-year-old woman at a gym and posting it on social media with disparaging remarks about the woman’s body.

A judge ruled against Dani Mathers in Los Angeles Superior Court in her bid to toss a misdemeanour count of invasion of privacy.

Mathers, 30, has acknowledged taking the photo at an LA Fitness club and posting it on Snapchat in July with the caption: “If I can’t unsee this then you can’t either.”

The 2015 Playmate of the year quickly became the target of online venom for the

so-called body shaming incident.

Her lawyers said she meant to send the photo privately to a friend and inadvertently posted it publicly.

Mathers, who has no criminal record, has offered to make amends by using her notoriety to bring attention to the issue of body shaming.

Prosecutors have pushed for a conviction on the charge and four weeks of community service with a road crew, according to court papers.

She’s shown no remorse and “should face the consequences of her cruel and criminal act,” Deputy City Attorney Chadd Kim said.

The defence unsuccessfully tried to get the case thrown out on the theory the law was vague about how “identifiable” a victim needs to be.

Attorney Dana Cole said the victim cannot be easily identified because the photo was shot from far away.

He said it took considerable effort for Los Angeles police and the gym to identify the woman, who has not been named.

Kim called the argument a “leap of illogic”.

Judge Gustavo Sztraicher said the law was valid and allowed the case to proceed.

A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for May 24.

Making history for all the wrong reasons

W

hat started off as an ordinary Wednesday in the Ashburton District ended up as a day that will go down in history as one of the bleakest yet on the employment front.

In one hour and a few thousand words the lives of about 370 Ashburtonians were altered forever as Silver Fern Farms management delivered the message many believed was inevitable – the Fairton plant would close.

The closure message was accompanied by dozens of reasons, but forget those, the bottom line is hundreds of people are out of work.

Young men and women with families to support, couples for whom the plant was their sole income and employees who have made the meat industry a lifetime career. Many went into the meeting expecting there would be retrenchment of some kind, but the closure announcement will still have been a blow.

Yes every employer has a right to make a decision around a business based on its viability, but few employers have a business where closure affects so many.

If there are any wrongs in the Fairton situation it’s that it’s taken so long, seen so many denials. It’s been a slow death.

The writing has been on the wall. Work has slowed down or been moved elsewhere. Only a fool would have been fooled by company platitudes that closure was not in the wind.

If there’s any good to come out of yesterday’s announcement it’s that those 370 employees can now move forward. They have certainty even if it’s the kind of certainty they didn’t want.

The challenge now is ours.

These are our people. Right now they may be feeling relief that they have an answer, but as the days tick by, the reality that there will be no work next season will start to hit home.

state that despite remedial efforts by farmers, the ongoing impacts of dairying on the environment will continue for many years.

NIWA scientists have recently reported flaws in the Government’s Freshwater policy which freshwater ecologists had also drawn attention to.

The ‘reality’ of Canterbury’s river was alluded to by F&B CEO Kevin Hague at a meeting he attended in Ashburton recently. The impact from dairying and other landuse on our nationally significant Ashburton Hakatere River, our groundwater and other surface waterways will take decades, if ever to repair.

Many people in our community are very concerned about our ‘swimmable’ rivers and to resolve our widely acknowledged problem will not be easy. They might consider the Government’s new Fresh Water Policies as ‘rhetoric’ and Kevin Hague’s ‘ground zero’ comment as ‘reality’.

‘Unfair tracking’ brings fine

The Dutch data authority said Facebook had targeted adverts based on sensitive subjects such as their sexual preference.

Unlike the French regulator, it did not fine the company, saying that Facebook had made changes, but warned that it may still impose sanctions.

Outrage has erupted over vegan sausages served at a Melbourne Bunnings store.

Cheltenham Cat Rescue was raising money to help pay vets fees and also to kickstart a multilingual awareness campaign about desexing cats.

They raised $1300 at the controversial Mother’s Day sizzle.

“I think we challenged people’s ingrained habits and thought processes,” Ms Reus said.

“We explained we were an animal rescue group so couldn’t sell animals to eat and so people had to think about that.”

Unfazed by the criticism over the alternative sausages, Ms Reus said “at least we’ve got people talking about the issue”.

Bunnings State Operations Manager, Tony Manzone, said for over two decades, the Bunnings

company has been supporting thousands of local community groups via the fundraising sausage sizzle.

“Since their inception the guidelines have been consistent.

“Meat sausages, onions and bread.

“This has not changed,” Mr Manzone said.

“However, in recent years, and on a case-by-case basis, we also allow community groups to have a vegan fundraising sausage sizzle if that is their preference, which is supported by appropriate customer signage.

“In addition, our cafes provide vegetarian as well as other options for customers if required.”

‘Alternative’ sausage sizzle The Bunnings sausage took on a whole new flavour at the weekend when a cat rescue service sold vegan snags in Melbourne.

Disappointed tradies, DIY-ers and mums with gift cards kicked up a Mother’s Day fuss when they discovered the meat-free snags at Mentone Bunnings.

The Cheltenham Cat Rescue group was behind the sausages, with group founder Natasha Reus saying some people threw a bit of a tantrum but 550 people bought an alternative sausage and loved it.

“I think maybe some people were disappointed to come to Bunnings ready to buy a sausage and it’s not the traditional fare – some people were a bit angry, we had the odd Oscar winning performance but most people asked questions and many gave them a try,” Ms Reus said.

Ms Reus said the Mother’s Day barbecue was their third at Bunnings but this time the event caused a stir, with meat-loving shoppers taking to talkback radio to complain.

“One woman in particular was very upset and very rude.

“I think she complained to Bunnings,” Ms Reus said.

Customer Olivia was surprised too see the vegan snags.

“We were a little shocked, considering it’s probably one of the most male dominated destinations in the country,” Olivia told 3AW. “We were like ... thank you, but no thank you.”

At a November sizzle the group sold 1000 vegan snags to Bunnings shoppers, she said.

Facebook has been fined £150,000 ($NZ240,000) by French authorities for “unfair tracking” of its users following a pan-European investigation into the internet giant.

The fine is the latest clash between Facebook and European authorities, which have repeatedly criticised its use of personal data.

CNIL, the French data regulator, along with its counterpart in the Netherlands, slammed Facebook for breaking EU rules.

The authorities, as well as Spanish and German regulators, have spent years investigating whether it informed users about how it was collecting data.

CNIL said that Facebook collected and compiled user data “without having a legal basis” and “without obtaining their explicit consent”.

It said the social network was able to track websites that users were visiting when they left Facebook, and that this was unclear to the users themselves.

Learn to control the controllable at SIDE

The end of the season is fast approaching and now is the time to grab an early-bird ticket for this year’s South Island Dairy Event (SIDE) to be held at Lincoln University in June.

The conference is run by farmers for farmers, to ensure the session content is always relevant.

This year’s theme is Controlling the Controllable. The dairy industry will always go through highs and lows on a regular basis, due to prices, environmental issues, and the perceptions of the non-farming community.

The 2017 SIDE team has been working to put together a stimulating event that takes all of these issues into account, with a range of speakers and more than 30 workshops teed up.

“SIDE is an ideal opportunity for delegates to learn and pick up ideas that they can take back to their own businesses to

help improve productivity and profitability,” SIDE chair Terry Kilday said.

“It is also a great opportunity for farmers to network with other like-minded people, especially at the evening social functions.”

Organising committee chairman Steve Booker said the event offers something for farmers at all levels of their career.

“Whether you are a newbie to farming or a seasoned campaigner, we’ll cover hot topics relating to people, cows and grass, growth and progression, the environment, and much more,” Booker said.

“We are also allowing more time for some equally important networking, with a planned speed networking session that will offer the opportunity to meet new people.”

The dinner, on Tuesday, June 27, provides a chance to socialise with other farmers and industry experts in an informal setting.

Fonterra is expected to forecast a higher farmgate milk price for the coming season when its board meets next week, with the overall dairy industry tipped to get a boost of up to $1.35 billion.

The board will also take another look at the current season’s forecast, which sits at $6.00/kg of milksolids, with an outside chance it could be upgraded a little.

GlobalDairyTrade prices have pushed up since March, especially for the key product of whole milk powder, which has exceeded $US3000/tonne.

Most analysts expect a forecast in the low $6s for next season, although ASB rural economist Nathan Penny is picking $6.75/ kg.

Two successive years of $6.00-plus milk prices would help farmers repair the damage to their balance sheets incurred over the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons, when prices slumped to $4.40/kg and $3.90/kg respectively.

A milk price of $6.75/kg for the season would represent a $1.35 billion injection for the economy from the entire dairy sector compared with the previous year, Penny estimated.

“Looking ahead, we think the dairy markets are starting the year in a good position,” he said.

“We have pencilled in $6.75/kg based on current spot prices and the exchange rate.”

Penny said Fonterra’s opening estimate for 2017/18 was likely to be conservative and at the low end, given the season is not yet under way.

An added complication for the co-op will be a late surge in production in autumn following on from bad growing conditions in the spring.

Fonterra had originally expected to see a 7 per cent decline in production over 2016/17, but now it looks like it will only be down by just 1 or 2 per cent.

On the supply side, production in New Zealand, Australia, Europe and Argentina had all come back, and demand was growing, he said.

ANZ rural economist Con Williams said there was a chance of an upgrade to the current season’s forecast to $6.10 to $6.15/ kg, and he expected a milk price of around $6.25/kg for 2017/18.

Rabobank said dairy farmers could look forward to a favourable season, but with qualifications.

“The price rally experienced since the second half of 2016 has had some of the gloss removed with stronger than anticipated production from New Zealand impacting on prices,” the bank’s dairy analyst Emma Higgins said in a report.

“These dynamics are set to keep global supply and demand largely in balance and, assuming a spot currency rate, we forecast the global market is in line to deliver a farmgate milk price near $6.25/kg,” she said. At that level, most New Zealand farmers would be profitable.

The most significant “upside” to Rabobank’s outlook was the possibility of a sharp increase in New Zealand dairy exports to China.

“Chinese production has been struggling to keep pace with our low consumption growth forecast of 1 per cent and stock levels are now very low. We see import growth of 20 per cent year-on-year as a possibility for 2017, which would barely restore inventory levels,” she said.

“New Zealand is well positioned to play a lead role in providing product to China, particularly so in the event that other large whole milk powder-producing countries struggle to increase their output over 2017.”

Place into a shallow dish. Combine the lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, shallot, rosemary and lemon zest. Pour over the chicken and toss to coat. Season with black pepper.

■ Cover and refrigerate for one hour.

■ Heat a large frying pan over medium heat. Cook the chicken for 4 to 5 minutes on each side or until it is brown and cooked through.

■ Serve with the roast vegetable and orzo salad and a green salad.

salad: Preheat the oven to 200°C. Combine the red onion, red pepper, yellow pepper, courgettes and asparagus, if using, in a large bowl. Add the olive oil, rosemary and garlic and mix well to combine. Toss to coat evenly then place in a large shallow oven dish. Roast for 30 minutes, or until the vegetables are golden and tender. Remove from the oven, stir in the balsamic vinegar then set aside to cool.

Meanwhile, cook the orzo following the packet directions. Drain, rinse under cold water and cool.

Combine the roast vegetables, orzo, blanched green beans (if using) and herbs. Toss well.

Serve warm with the rosemary and lemon chicken thighs.

On Friday April 21 there was a good gallery of people to discuss the formation of a Probus Club in Ashburton.

Margaret Drake was the guest Speaker and is also a Probus South Pacific Limited Director.

Margaret spoke on Probus Clubs throughout New Zealand. She spoke about her involvement with Rolleston Combined Club which started with ten foundation members they now have one hundred and fifty members. Tony Blaber also a Director of Probus South Pacific, gave a talk on his involvement in Probus.

David Drake spoke on behalf of Rotary, as to Rotary’s involvement in Probus.

Probus is an international organisation very successful and well-known for the camaraderie between men and women who seek friendship of other like-minded and semi-retired people. Come and meet men and women who enjoy social interaction, activities, extended interests and outings and enjoy the fellowship of new friends.

Ashburton Electronic Organs and Keyboards Club Lorraine Boud played us in this evening with some lovely old dance music.

Janet Smith welcomed a smaller than usual group of members and told us of some coming events then passed the meeting over to Bernard Reddecliffe who arranged the entertainment for the evening. First up was Lorraine Pluck on keyboard playing “Grannina Mia” “If I Had My Way”and Liebestraum” Lovely start to the evening. Rose Stead and Audrey Ritchie on the piano gave us 4 Duets The Village King, Washington Post, My word these ladies can rattle the ivories Well done. Elizabeth McCormick on keyboard played New York New York, then a Medley - Emperor Waltz-Rigoletto - Vienna Life. Beautiful music.The Raffles winners were Rose Stead May Birkett. Graham Stevens. Peter Brophy.

Iris Taylor. Well done Irene Williams and Cushla Coyle on their piano Accordians played - Waltz through Life-and The Old Bicycle (an old Dutch Tune) Lovely music. May Birkett on keyboard played.

On the streets where you live- Over the Rainbow -Love Story. Next was Michael Kingsbury on his Keyboard “Music, Music Music -I Have a Dream- Get me to the Church”. And so finished another great evening.

Ashburton Herb Group In February our members visited Penmar Lavender farm at Carew, where Leonie and Trevor gave a talk and demonstration on how the oil is removed from the lavender, which has to be picked at just the right time. We also sampled some of the products they had made from the lavender oil. Then visited their delightful shop stocked with various products, lavender oil, face and hand creams and ointments all made from the oils and all with a lovely soothing perfume. After lunch at Geraldine we visited Victorian Woodworks making some purchases and enjoying the lovely surrounds and

afternoon tea. Another very interesting Cottage Industry.

At our March meeting Olive was welcome in as a new member. After which we discussed the amount of herbs we each had used the previous month. It was quite amazing the amount some of us had used and benefits we were getting from their use. We also had a display of several herbs and information at the Library. This is an annual event.

In April we had two visitors interested in herbs with jean deciding to join after enjoying an afternoon sharing a lot of recipes and hints using herbs for cleaning, cooking and health this was followed by our usual afternoon tea and herbal drinks.

Our May meeting was an informative talk

by Wendy on making chutney and also various recipes. The difference between chutney and relish is that relish doesn’t have any fruit. We all had a taste of the 10 different combinations and had varying preferences. Our next meeting will be held on June 7.

Coronation Target Shooting Club Hot on the heels of winning the senior team award at the Ashburton Sports awards the “Plainsmen” have the second challenge tonight (Thursday) It appears that a number of the regular team members are unavailable so it might be tough going. Ah well! Such are the vagaries of team sport.

The McArthur family appear to be making the St. Kilda range in Dunedin their very own. Last weekend Steve won the Masters grade with 195 & 198 while Lanelle has found her form to score 193 and 199 to finish 5th in A grade. Hailey Beevor was introduced as the new Junior Captain and Savanna McArthur was welcomed to the coaching team.

On the home front the McArthurs continued the run with another couple of 100s while Shania Harrison-Lee produced a personal best at the top of a whole heap of good scores.

Creative Fibre There were 33 ladies present for our May meeting including 3 visitors. As we had no demonstration planned after the meeting we could spend more time on interesting business. The main talk was about the recent National Fibre Festival in Christchurch. It was a very successful few days with many outside good comments. Shona reported on the Fashion Parade which was very difficult to judge because of the high standard. A Mystery Trip is planned for Monday May 29 using cars. Anyone who missed this meeting and wants to go, contact Margaret Williamson for details.

A beautiful selection of classical music A good crowd of 180 turned out on Sunday to listen to the Mid Canterbury Choir’s The Heavens Declare! The concert featured world-renowned organist Martin Setchell who enthralled the audience with his solos. on ideas.

The main attraction was Margaret Williamson’s Christchurch Cathedral in wool (to scale) that took 3 years to create and our entry in the Runway Mediaeval outfit worked on by several members.

Grey Power Ashburton Inc. On Monday May 15 Secretary Natalie Blampied welcomed 40 plus members to the monthly General Meeting of Grey Power Ashburton.

Apologies were received from; Peter Thomas, Colin Cameron, Pat Gibson, and Daphne Early these were accepted by general affirmation.

Natalie advised that at the next general meeting Vice President Colin would introduce his member’s forum for any problems to be presented for the attention of the committee. She also announced details of an Ageing Well Forum being held at the Seniors’ Centre on Friday June 16 at 1.30pm to 3.30pm, bookings recommended by phoning Age Concern on 3086817.

The speaker for the afternoon was then introduced, Marie McAnulty from S.E.E.D.S. (Sharing Everyday Experiences & Drawing on Skills). Working with Safer Ashburton District, this is a voluntary organisation taking a commonsense approach in helping young mothers and fathers with parenting, household and family skills. The service is free and clients are referred from CYFS, Plunket and sometimes medical centres. There are about 11 volunteers in Ashburton servicing 10-12 clients. New volunteers are welcome and contact can be made with Marie on 308 1395.

Greer Ricketts passed a vote of thanks and presented Marie with a fruit tray.

The raffle was drawn and prizes distributed.

Margaret Twamley entertained on the piano while afternoon tea was served.

One hundred and eighty people enjoyed an afternoon of uplifting sacred music as the Mid Canterbury Choir presented its Mother’s Day concert, The Heavens Declare! – a beautiful selection of classical music by Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn and Fauré.

The concert flowed seamlessly from choir to soloists, from the sharing of accompanist duties, a violin obbligato, and interesting background about the pieces we sang, from June Barrett.

Guests; Martin Setchell, world-renowned organist, enthralled the audience with his 3 Parisian organ solos – one very reminiscent of the fairground music of old!

Olivia Stewart’s beautiful soprano voice soared through the “heavens” of the church in her solo pieces.

The Coronation Mass, and two other songs, featured four soloists (names above), who gave real depth and texture to the music.

The choir really enjoyed working with Martin Setchell as our guest Musical Director, who acknowledged the initial training of the choir from their regular MD Kathy McKimmie, currently travelling overseas.

The choir is grateful to Creative Communities Ashburton District, Patersons Funeral Services and Argyle Welsh Finnigan – without their generous sponsorship, we would not be able to perform a concert of this nature with outside soloists, accompanists and Martin.

In brief New NRL salary cap The confusion over next year’s NRL salary-cap figure is one step closer to being resolved, with all 16 clubs agreeing to a figure to put to the Rugby League Players’ Association (RLPA) for 2018. The league and RLPA are yet to sign a collective bargaining agreement for next season, but it’s hoped all clubs will have a clearer figure to work towards for next year’s cap after yesterday’s meeting of chief executives. “We believe we have all landed on a fair position to be discussed with the RLPA which has the backing of all 16 club chairmen and CEOs,” NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said.

In an incredible twist, Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has raised the prospect of no Australian Super Rugby team being cut after all.

Giving the Western Force and Melbourne Rebels renewed hope, despite the ARU last month announcing that one franchise must go under SANZAAR’S downsizing plans, Cheika said any such scenario remains a big “if”.

Cheika’s revelation comes amid claims that the ongoing uncertainty is affecting players’ mental health, with Rebels assistant coach and former Wallaby Morgan Turinui on Tuesday branding the seemingly endless process a “disgrace”.

With SANZAAR resolving to reduce the competition from 18 to 15 teams in 2018, the ARU promised five weeks ago to announce within “48 to 72 hours” which Australian

franchise would be chopped. But with both the Force and Rebels threatening legal action, claiming the governing body had no right to remove them, the ARU removed the deadline – before putting up a cone of silence.

South Africa, who agreed to cut two franchises, is facing similar turmoil, with the Cheetahs and Kings also fighting threats of extinction.

“The time frame issue, there’s so many moving parts to this. You don’t actually know where the resolution is going to end up,” Cheika said.

“So I think there’s still to make a broad range of decisions on and we’ll just see what happens with that.”

Asked what message he had to players’ families caught up in the saga, Cheika said intriguingly “there’s no guarantees” any team will be axed.

Warriors stalwart Simon Mannering hopes to return to NRL action within a fortnight after suffering a hamstring strain during training.

Team New Zealand’s boat was damaged when it was rear-ended in a collision with Land Rover BAR.

Brits rear-end Team NZ Team New Zealand’s preparations for this month’s America’s Cup went from bad to worse yesterday after the Kiwi boat sustained damage after being rear-ended by British team Land Rover BAR during practice racing.

The Kiwi boat has suffered damage to the rear of its hull after the Brits, skippered by Ben Ainslie, ran into the back of Emirates Team New Zealand during a pre-start manoeuvre an action helmsman Peter Burling described as “unnecessary”.

The damage could keep Team NZ off the water for several days.

BAR skipper Ben Ainslie responded to the collision, with an apology and a light-hearted reference to the ding.

“Bit of a love tap racing hard with @EmiratesTeamNZ,’’ Ainslie tweeted.

“Sorry guys and hope you’re back on the water soon.’’

The incident occurred after Burling had done a good job securing the favoured leeward end of the line and shutting out Ainslie and the Land Rover BAR boat.

“It was a bit of a shame in the last pre start we had the leeward end of the line pretty locked down, Ben was quite late and just ran straight into the back of us,” said Burling.

“It’s just unnecessary a week out from the America’s Cup. We are all here to learn and it’s a shame we have a pretty big metre dent now in the back of our nice boat. “[Ainslie] went straight in under the media pod with his windward bow and right down the inside of the leeward hull, so there is a pretty good dent there. You can definitely see it

Team NZ chief executive Grant Dalton said with America’s Cup racing set to begin in just 10 days time, it is a set-back the team cannot afford.

“We know Ben well, he is a good guy but frustration is obviously getting to him and the red mist came down and it’s a lot of damage in a time we can’t afford it.”

Yesterday’s incident comes after Team NZ missed Tuesday’s opening day of the final practice racing window after shredding their rudder before the racing began for the day. While they were able to swap out the damaged rudder and return to the course, they missed their racing slots for the day.

cial five-day block of practice racing, Team New Zealand sailing coach Ray Davies said it was important the crew made the most of their opportunities this week.

Yesterday’s collision was a bitter end to an otherwise good day on the water for the Kiwi syndicate. Team NZ won both of the races it sailed against Land Rover BAR earlier in the day and Groupama Team France after both Oracle and Softbank Team Japan refused to race against the Kiwi team.

“Up until the last race with BAR we had a bloody nice day, we got the boat around the track really well, in really nice yachting conditions, but very unfortunate to get a hole in the boat on a practice race. I dont think Ben will be feeling too happy about it at the moment,” said skipper Glenn Ashby. - NZME

Black Sticks run riot over India; go 2-up Goals weren’t an issue for the women’s Black Sticks in Tuesday night’s second international against India at Pukekohe.

The fifth-ranked New Zealand team flattened India 8-2 at Rosa Birch Park to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. New Zealand won the first international 4-1 at the same venue on Sunday.

This series is being used as something of a selection exercise by New Zealand coach Mark Hager.

All 25 squad players will have at least three appearances as he looks to prepare a team for the World League semi-finals in Brussels next month.

Hager will be liking what he’s

seeing, considering he’s unlikely to play a first-team side until later in the series.

The scoreline blew out in the final quarter as New Zealand rattled in four goals in the last eight minutes.

The last time New Zealand passed eight goals was the 31-0 blowout against Samoa at the Oceania tournament in late 2015, and there was a 12-0 shellacking of Poland a couple of months earlier in Antwerp.

Black Sticks star Stacey Michelsen has had injury issues since returning from last year’s Rio Olympics. She put those behind her in grabbing a fine hattrick and showing some classy touches.

Attacker Sam Harrison snagged two goals with the other three coming from Kirsten Pearce, Maddie Doar and Steph Dickins, the latter two getting their debut international goals.

World No 12 India got goals from Liliana Minz, from a penalty corner in the third quarter and Anupa Barla scored just before New Zealand’s late goal burst.

“In the first quarter India probably had the run of most of the play,” Black Sticks assistant coach Sean Dancer said.

“We scored our first against run of play. It wasn’t a great quarter but to the girls’ credit they certainly stepped it up and scored some good goals.”

There are a number of players

vying for World League selection. Hands are being put up by players wanting to catch the selectors’ eye.

“We’re looking at the big picture and trying to give plenty of people opportunities,” Dancer said.

“Maddie Doar has certainly had a couple of good games, along with a lot of other girls who are doing a good job at the moment.”

There are some niggling injuries in the squad, notably key defender Liz Thompson, while Rose Keddell is battling a virus but no injuries are rated serious.

The third game of the series is at the same venue tonight.

Crusaders skipper Sam Whitelock has slotted straight back into the unbeaten Super Rugby side’s runon XV as they go tropical for this weekend’s clash with the Chiefs in Suva.

The 84-cap All Black has sat out the side’s last two matches after picking up a suspension against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein for striking.

But with fellow lock Scott Barrett ruled out for at least a fortnight with a knee issue, Whitelock’s return is a timely boost for the side as they look to cement their spot at the top of the New Zealand conference.

He’ll partner up with Luke Romano in the second row, twofifths of an all-Test tight five including Joe Moody, Codie Taylor and Owen Franks.

“He’s fresh, real fresh – everyone’s trying to pull him back,” Crusaders boss Scott Robertson told reporters.

“He’s really clear what he wants from our group, driven around the team and brought a great energy to us this week after watching the last two.”

Elsewhere, Robertson has mostly stuck with the squad that outclassed and harried the Hurricanes into submission in last week’s all-Kiwi derby.

The only other change to his starting XV is at halfback, where Bryn Hall jumps into the No.9 jumper for the benched Mitchell Drummond.

Star fullback Israel Dagg will sit out at least another week as he reintegrates into the side, while Kieran Read remains weeks from action.

Matt Todd has passed all concussion protocols and will play from the start.

“Probably (they’re) the best No.9 and No.21 combination in the competition, both great starters and finishers,” Robertson said.

“It was a chance for Bryn to play this week, after two starts by Mitchell.”

Friday’s match in Suva marks the second consecutive year in which the Crusaders and Chiefs have jetted off to Fiji for a Super Rugby clash.

The Chiefs won 23-13 in the tropical wet last year, and Robertson said the chance of a repeat dose of rain remained high.

More importantly, the match would serve as a test of his side’s title credentials and durability after arriving in Fiji on Tuesday.

“We’re well aware and clear of the requirements, what we need for a home final and the difference for us between finishing first and fifth, it’s a fine margin.”

Cran Dalgety expected Bonnie Joan to run in the top three of last week’s Nevele R Fillies final, but the manner in which she produced the performance to dead-heat for second, left even the usually collected Dalgety suitably impressed.

Off a second line draw the Southland Oaks winner was fantastic in defeat, working hard to get outside the leader before applying the pressure inside the final 600 metres.

“It was a huge performance,” Dalgety said.

“I expected her to run a big

race, but even that exceeded my expectations and probably justified the opinion I have of her in some ways too.”

The Somebeachsomewhere filly who has now won seven of her 12 career appearances gets her chance to go one better this week in the Group One $150,000 New Zealand Oaks, where instead of being handicapped by the barrier draw like she was last week, she’s now firmly in the box seat to make the play if her driver Dexter Dunn should choose to do so.

Even more pleasing for Dalgety this week however than the front line barrier draw has

been the manner in which Bonnie Joan has come through last week’s assignment with flying colours.

“Dare I say it that she’s actually improved off the run which is quite encouraging from my perspective.

“She was bright and bubbly the next day and has really been good in her work this week so hopefully we are that little bit better again this week because we know we will have to be.”

With her good draw, the expectation is that Dunn might light the speedy filly up early to win the race to the markers and with Dunn’s knack of produc-

ing huge front-running drives in big races, an attempted all of the way performance isn’t out of the question.

Two games left in series There are just two games left in the Inter-Centre Premier Netball competition for local teams to test their skills against their Canterbury rivals before the return to local competition in June.

The inter-centre competition features teams from Christchurch and North Canterbury and has been an excellent opportunity for Mid Canterbury teams to face some tough competition from outside the district.

It’s been a mixed bag for the Mid Canterbury teams, with Celtic the only team so far to win against a much-fancied opposition. They have also impressed in their two local derbies and are al-

ready looking to be title contenders this year.

They face the Technical team tonight, who are sitting just below them on the table due to a loss in the first game.

Defending premier champions Methven have struggled throughout the first round with a new-look team, after only retaining one player from the championship team last year. They have had some heavy losses but will be looking for a close game against United this week.

United has also struggled with finding their combinations but have been steadily improving each week as their confidence

grows. They had a solid game against Ashburton College last week so will be looking to notch a win in the local derby, before taking on Halswell in their final game.

Hampstead will be looking to continue their good form from last week, where they led Halswell for much of the match before finally relinquishing 4941. They will face Lincoln University in Christchurch in their last away game, before returning to play Southern in the final game of the round.

Southern will round out their season against Canterbury sides with their game against Saints

this week, while Ashburton College has two tough final weeks taking on Greenpark and then Technical.

At the end of the first round, teams return to their own local competitions for the second round, before the third and final round to find this year’s champion.

Ashcoll girls dominate; boys in narrow loss Ashburton College basketball teams provided more excitement in their premier school leagues against Cashmere on Tuesday, the girls demolishing their opposition and the boys narrowly losing to their highly-ranked opponents.

The Ashcoll senior girls now have two big wins from two outings in the Whelan Trophy and looking forward to tougher competition as the league progresses.

They beat Cashmere 103-50.

After a slow start they came to life late in the first quarter, with guard Sammy Arnold knocking in 14 of her 19 game points for a 29-11 lead.

Cashmere came out determined to turn things around in the second quarter, ramping up

their defensive pressure with an intimidating full court press.

Cashmere capitalised on a couple of Ashcoll turnovers, going on a 10-0 scoring run, and forcing college coach Andrew Shepherd into a time-out. College came out firing, finishing the half strongly while establishing a commanding 50-26 half-time lead.

Ashcoll continued its form through the second half with dominant performances from Summer Anderson and Ashlee Strawbridge, 25 and 24 points respectively, in the paint helping add to the 41-83 lead at the end of the third quarter.

A last quarter defensive surge stemmed by guard Liberty Ross saw the college girls keep Cashmere to just nine points, while

guards Dani McArthur and Grace Adams pushed the ball well in transition, getting Ashcoll to its 103-50 winning margin.

Shepherd was extremely happy with his young team’s ability to manage the defensive pressure Cashmere applied when looking to get themselves back in the game. “We did a great job adapting out of the time-out, the girls have been working hard and it’s showing in their results.”

The boys lost 67-61 to the higher-ranked Cashmere side, though it was anyone’s game – Ashcoll was up 18-17 at the first quarter, but then trailled 29-31 at the half.

Cashmere was up by six points 47-41 at the end of the third quarter, holding the margin to the end.

Senior players led the points

scoring with Josh Lowe on 14, Gareth Hunt on 12 and Fletcher Arnold on 10 against an aggressive side.

Coach Pip Johnston there were positives to take from another close game, and learning points.

“We just lost our composure a bit when we were down. We need to stay positive and focussed for the whole game.

“We’ve now played the two top teams and lost by just six points each time. We have to turn up each and every game in this competition.”

The next round of the Whelan Trophy sees the girls host unbeaten number one seed Rangi Ruru High School at Oxford Street, while the boys take on Rangiora in the later game.

Will he or won’t he? Speculation that Johnathan Thurston may make a shock NRL injury comeback against Cronulla ramped up again when the co-captain trained with North Queensland in Sydney yesterday. But Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan reckons the inspirational Queensland playmaker is a “long shot” and won’t be risked by the Cowboys with State of Origin looming.

Special meeting The Rugby Union Players’ Association (RUPA) has backed the Victorian Rugby Union’s request for a special general meeting of the Australian Rugby Union’s board, which could bring the Super Rugby saga to a head.

RUPA yesterday said its board had voted unanimously for a meeting to be held as soon as practicable to seek a “transparent, comprehensive update” on the ARU’s plans to kill off one Australian Super Rugby franchise.

The Rebels on Tuesday demanded that RUPA step up and do more for its players, with this resolution coming after the two groups met in Melbourne late in the day. - AAP

Supercars officially for sale

‘Non’ to Sharapova wildcard In a stunning rebuke by the French Tennis Federation, twotime French Open champion Maria Sharapova was denied a wildcard into both the main and qualifying draw of the tournament, leaving the 2012 and 2014 champion out of Roland Garros for the second straight year.

The announcement was made on a surreal made-for-the-internet Facebook Live post on the personal page of Bernard Giudicelli, the president of the FFT. Sharapova, who’s only in the fifth week of her comeback, didn’t have enough rankings points to get into either draw (with another two or three weeks, she would have) and thus was in need of the wildcard.

It wasn’t much of a surprise the Russian didn’t get an automatic bid into the main draw – the entire idea that there would be an Oscar-like reveal for the qualification wildcards por-

tended that. But for the FFT to deny Sharapova – who’s already earned enough points in three tournaments to rise to No. 211 in the world and could be ranked in the 40s if she wins Rome – a spot in the 48-woman qualification draw just seems spiteful.

It’s as if the decision was informed by the countless players who’ve lobbed jabs at Sharapova before, during and after her 15-month ban for meldonium, a drug that had been legal as recently as days before Sharapova’s positive test.

“There can be a wildcard for return from injuries; there cannot be a wildcard for return from doping,” Giudicelli said.

“She might be very disappointed, but it’s my responsibility to protect the game, and a game played without any doubts of results.”

Fine. But if Sharapova already did the time for her supposed

crime, then what is the FFT protecting besides its own arrogance and superiority? She’s paid her dues. She’s back.

If tennis is the meritocracy idealists want to believe it is, then give Sharapova a spot in the qualies and let her play her way in. She wouldn’t have bumped out a more deserving player.

She’d have bumped out a wildcard recipient who couldn’t get in 12 months the amount of points Sharapova has earned in one.

Sharapova isn’t owed anything by the French Open, the same way she wasn’t owed a wildcard by the four tournaments that have already given her one – Stuttgart, Madrid, Rome and Birmingham.

It’s the FFT’s tournament and they can do with it what they want. But if the goal is to put on the best tennis tournament pos-

sible, then you clearly extend an invitation to one of the – and this is a conservative estimate – 20 best players in the world.

Now, the French is without Sharapova, Serena Williams (pregnancy) and Roger Federer (rest) – the three biggest stars in the game.

Even with Serena in the semifinals and finals last year, the tournament had the unsightly appearance of wide areas of empty seats in the lower half of Court Philippe Chatrier. Imagine the no-shows for a final between Karolina Pliskova and Anastasija Sevastova.

It’s simply bizarre. One minute, Maria Sharapova was the French Open favourite. The next minute, she was out of the tournament entirely, subject to the whims of a governing body using its power to send a message that had already been received, loud and clear.

Loss could cost Manchester United $40m Manchester United’s famous sponsors will put the boot into the club’s finances if the glamour English outfit fails to make the Champions League again next season.

Hard on the heels of revelations about the massive amounts paid to an agent who brought glamour players to Manchester United, the scale

of football business has been rammed home again with the BBC revealing the Champions League sums.

The Europa League final against Dutch side Ajax next week - the winner goes into the next Champions League - will have immediate and massive ramifications for Manchester United’s financial fortunes.

Failure in Stockholm will activate a $40m penalty clause in their 10-year $1400m deal with adidas, the cuts being spread out over the remaining years of the contract. United are expected to earn something approaching $56m by being in the Champions League.

United’s financial officer Cliff Baty said: “For us the bigger

prize is Adidas and Champions League.”

The winner in Stockholm gets $12m, with the losers due $6.5m. Baty said in a normal year, United would expect to generate between $75m and $94m in the Champions League compared to between $28m and $38m in the Europa League.

Australia’s third biggest sport is officially up for sale with the majority owner of Supercars slapping a $100m plus price tag on the V8 powered national icon.

Five corporations including News Corp Australia, publisher of The Daily Telegraph and parent company of Fox Sports, have already registered an ‘interest’ in the sale of Archer Capital’s majority stake in Supercars.

It can be also revealed major event and entertainment companies Sports Entertainment Limited (SEL) and TEG, which owns Ticketek, are also in the race.

Archer Capital, one of Australia’s top-performing private equity firms, has contracted international investment bank UBS to sell its 65 per cent stake in the business.

Supercars’ team owners were last month told Archer Capital was pressing ahead with the sale of its majority stake in the business.

Supercars chief executive James Warburton confirmed Archer had officially began the process of selling its 65 per cent ownership.

The 26 Racing Entitlement Contract (REC) owners hold the remaining 35 per cent stake in Supercars.

“Supercars is in a sustained period of high growth with a very clear vision for the next decade,” Warburton said.

“Our focus is the continued growth of a thriving business, renowned international motorsport category and tier-one Australian mainstream sport.

“We are well within reach of our ambition to be one of the leading three sports in this country and to expand our Championship into Asia.”

UBS has being busy conducting detailed presentations to Australian companies resulting in five submissions of interest in the sale.

However, it is uncertain whether News Corp Australia and Fox Sports will make an offer to buy Archer Capital’s majority stake.

As the broadcast rights holder through its six-year deal with Fox Sports, there is not a great imperative for News Corp to buy Supercars It is understood Channel Ten, which simulcasts several major race events in the Supercars calendar, is out of the mix.

Archer Capital bought a 65 per cent share in 2011 for a reported $180 million from Sports Entertainment Limited and Supercars team’s owners.

Although Archer Capital has put a $100m price tag on its stake, it is believed $70m-$80m was a more realistic valuation.

But record television figures, a growing audience and international expansion plans could drive the figure higher with further bidders expected to join the five.

Supercars TV cumulative audience has grown by 43 per cent over the last three years with more than 65 million viewers in 2016.

‘I don’t care how they qualify’ England coach Eddie Jones says he will continue to pick the best available players and doesn’t care how long they’ve been in the country.

Jones made a statement after World Rugby increased the residency qualification period from three to five years, effective from late 2020. But there was no change to the grandparent rule which is how 30-yearold New Zealander Willi Heinz has qualified for the England squad.

The former Crusaders halfback is the latest to appear on Jones’ radar after being added to the 26-man camp earlier this week which is part of England’s preparations for a two-test tour of Argentina next month.

“It’s not my job to worry about how they qualify, it’s my job to pick players that qualify,” Jones said.

“I don’t care how they qualify, I’ll pick them. That’s the rules we play under. I obey them like any good schoolteacher does.”

Heinz, a New Zealand under-21 representative, qualifies via his English grandmother.

But his selection flies in the face of World Rugby vice-chairman Agustin Pichot’s aim to restore test selection as “a reward for devoting your career, your rugby life, to your nation”.

Jason Woodward, the former Hurricanes back, and the Auckland born and raised Denny Solomona, who was with the Melbourne Storm, are already in the squad to tour Argentina.

Auckland-raised Ben Te’o, a Hibiscus Coast league junior, and the controversial captain Dylan Hartley, are Kiwis already established in Jones’ battle plans.

Cricket pay dispute no closer to resolution Australian cricket’s pay dispute is no closer to resolution after informal talks yesterday.

Cricket Australia (CA) says there’s no progress in the saga which players are threatening could impact on this summer’s Ashes series.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) expires on June 30 and there has been little meaningful discussion between CA and the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA)

on a new deal. The dispute is centred on CA’s wish to ditch the revenue-sharing model that has shaped players’ salaries for 20 years since the first MoU. A CA spokesman said talks about the issue were held yesterday but there wasn’t a meeting with the ACA. Players including David Warner have warned the impasse could impact on the home Ashes series.

Sport SBW named to start Sonny Bill Williams gets another chance to impress the All Blacks selectors and help his Blues team to an unlikely playoffs place after he was named to start against the Stormers in Cape Town on Saturday.

Williams missed last weekend’s victory over the Cheetahs after suffering concussion the previous week against the Waratahs, but has been cleared to play at Newlands.

He is likely to be relishing the opportunity. Williams has a big following in South Africa, and particularly in Cape Town.

‘Bit of boogie’ a winner

“A wee bit of boogie”, that was all Tim Cook needed to guide his Mitsubishi Evo to breaking the lap record and a first place finish at the Ashburton Car Club Autosparks Street Sprints at the weekend.

Cook said he has been competing at the event for about 15 years, having his first attempt behind the wheel at the age of 15.

“I won the event in 2015 which was my first time winning and I was blown away,” he said.

“I went back last year and changed the car, there was driver error and I cocked up and went through the cones which ruled me out.”

Having competed in the Waimate 50, Cook said the car was “running really well”, and he had made a few adjustments coming in to the street sprints.

“I thought I was doing a good thing but I was wrong and it wasn’t good so I had to work back through the changes I had made to fix it,” he said.

“After about the third qualifying run it came right so I just left it and jumped in and drove it for the rest of the weekend.”

The weekend was not without its challenges however, with Cook’s tyres overheating in the final rounds of the competition.

“The final rounds were quite close together and the tyres were just heating up too much, and cooking themselves,” he said.

“After one of the rounds we went out to the back section and drove through puddles just to try and cool them down.

“They were good for the first lap of the final run, but started to go off in the second lap and it got a bit tricky to control.”

One thing that was key for Cook’s success was keeping his car out of the hay bales.

“The worst thing was I clipped my wing mirror and that was the worst thing,” he said.

“In the past I have had a few run-ins with the hay bales.”

After coming in to the weekend with a goal of dropping below the 2.24 mark, Cook said he hadn’t expected to be posting regular times in the 2.23s in the final rounds, and never ex-

pected to post a time in the 2.22 bracket and break the record time.

“The car has got a bit of boogie but it certainly isn’t the most powerful car out there,” he said.

“Over the years I’ve just built it to go round the corners.”

Despite being a year away, Cook said even if he doesn’t return in the car he won with this year, he would certainly be fronting in something else.

“It is why I’ve done the event so many times, it is such a great event and the team do such a great job down here,” he said.

“It has really become a bit of an iconic event for those who compete at the club sport level and is really great for the community as people come from far and beyond for it.”

All Blacks to play Brave Blossoms in a test The All Blacks will get their wish of a pre-World Cup hit-out in Japan with confirmation of a November 2018 test against the Brave Blossoms.

The defending champions, looking for their third consecutive World Cup crown, will play Japan on November 3 next year before flying to Europe for their

end-of-year tour. The venue is yet to be confirmed but is likely to be in Tokyo.

New Zealand Rugby chief Steve Tew said the test would give the All Blacks the perfect opportunity to acquaint themselves with Japanese conditions.

It would also help the union prepare logistically for the Cup

in 2019, and stoke local enthusiasm for the tournament.

“Interest in rugby in Japan is on a high and will only build as we get closer to the Rugby World Cup,” Tew said.

“Playing in Japan is always a highlight – their fans love the game, and are great supporters of the All Blacks.”

New Zealand have played Japan in three tests, the most recent being in Tokyo in 2013, when they triumphed 54-6.

They also took on the Brave Blossoms, now coached by Jamie Joseph, in the 1995 and 2011 Rugby World Cup pool stages.

Another drugs bust Former Socceroo Mitch Nichols’ chances of landing another A-League contract appear shattered after he was charged with possessing a prohibited drug.
