Methven has won a local government conference that will bring thousands of dollars in spin-offs to the Ashburton District.

The ski town will host the 2017 New Zealand Community Boards conference.

Methven Community Board chairwoman Liz McMillan made a case at this year’s conference in Waitangi for the biennial event to be held in Methven. The conference alternates venues between the North and South Islands and attracts about 200 delegates.

Winning the conference was a huge coup for Methven, Ms McMillan said, and it would have a big spin-off across the district.

“We’re the perfect location in terms of proximity to Christchurch Airport, conference venues and having accommodation within walking distance of the venue.”

Hosting the national event would also be a great opportunity to showcase what Methven had to offer as a visitor destination, she said.

Experience Mid Canterbury were partners in preparing the conference bid and chief executive Nigel Birt an-

ticipated the financial spin-off would be considerable.

The base calculation for conference value was around $240 per person per night, he said, and the event would bring about $48,000 a night into the district without discretionary spending.

“This is a really good one to get and it’s great that it falls in the shoulder season.”

It’s a dog’s life What a difference a week makes. A week ago intrepid police dog Thames was entering his eighth day lost in the unforgiving bush of the Tararua Ranges, with no food, shelter or company. This week he’s dining on pigs’ ears and dried liver, soaking up the attention of his many new fans and sporting a shiny coat thanks to a “pampering” session at a Masterton pet salon. The 4-year-old German shepherd made national headlines when he disappeared while training with his handler, constable Mike Wakefield. Mr Wakefield and many others spent a frantic week searching for Thames before he was found, hungry but otherwise unharmed, last Sunday. When the Herald on Sunday spoke to Mr Wakefield on Friday, he and Thames were on their way to the dog’s first professional grooming appointment.

“He’s getting a nice bath, a nice blow dry and his nails done,” he said. Thames also received donated toys and dog treats. Thames lost four or five kilograms during his week in the bush, so the treats were welcome, Mr Wakefield said.

“He’s getting spoilt. He doesn’t usually get a lot of treats but I’ve had a few gifts from people so he’s been getting them. It’s pretty cool.” Thames has been all over print, radio and television media in the past week, but Mr Wakefield had drawn the line at an offer from a women’s magazine.

A guitar George Harrison played at a time when Beatlemania was taking flight has sold for nearly half a million dollars at a New York auction. Julien’s Auctions says the 1963 Mastersound electric guitar went for $US490,000 ($NZ655,737) at the weekend to an undisclosed bidder. Julien’s says Harrison borrowed it from a British music store and played it on stage several times in England and in Channel Islands in the summer of 1963. A so-called “penguin” suit that Elvis Presley wore on stage in Las Vegas in 1975 sold for nearly $US122,000 ($NZ163,265). Presley’s marriage certificate from his 1967 wedding to Priscilla Presley sold for over $US40,000.

Former Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan (right) has dismissed suggestions the group’s hit Sweet Child O’ Mine was copied from Aussie rock group Australian Crawl. Australian Crawl singer James Reyne recently pointed out that his group’s 1981 track Unpublished Critics bears similarities to Guns N’ Roses 1987 rock anthem, but insisted he would never act on his suspicions for fear of the legendary band’s heavyweight legal team. McKagan and fellow former Guns N’ Roses star Gilby Clarke have now spoken out to dismiss the claims. “At that point, Guns were trying to be so original and different to do our own thing,” McKagan told US radio show Opie Radio. “There’s just no way we would have referenced anything. So if there’s any similarity, it’s complete happenstance.” Speaking on Florida radio channel The Gater, guitarist Clarke said: “Obviously, when I heard the songs back to back, it’s definitely ‘Wow’.” “But, in all honesty, there definitely isn’t a connection,” he said. “The band was always about being original, being the first. So it’s really not in the DNA to have been part of something like that.”

Ships mark Dunkirk rescue Some of the wooden boats which helped rescue more than 338,000 British soldiers trapped on the beaches in northern France in World War Two are again sailing to Dunkirk. Nineteen Dunkirk Little Ships have arrived at Royal Victoria Dock in east London, part of a fleet of around 55 boats crossing the Channel this week to help mark the historic episode in World War Two. Poor weather means the boats will have to leave today, two days ahead of schedule, in order to ensure both the crews and the vessels are safe. Ian Gilbert, commodore of the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships, said there is huge pride in being involved in the event, which marks the 75th anniversary of the great rescue - dubbed Operation Dynamo. He said the boats were part of “the great response of the British naval tradition in 1940” and he hopes the public were interested in being able to see them close up.

Spotlight on religion in schools

Parents at a Mid Canterbury school are being urged to have their say about the future of its religious instruction.

A religious instruction survey has been sent to all parents and caregivers with children at Mount Somers Springburn School as its board of trustees weighs up the viability of the programme.

The school currently runs religious instruction for one hour each week over a six-week period.

Students who do not opt in to religious instruction must leave their classrooms during the

class and go to a separate room to be supervised.

Mid Canterbury has a high rate of schools that still teach religious instruction programmes, with just five of the district’s 21 primary and secondary schools opting out. That number could rise to six, depending on the results of the survey.

Parents have been asked to signal their preferred choice from three options - keeping the programme as it is, running it outside of regular class time, or abolishing it all together.

The move comes as a dispute between a Whangaparaoa family and their daughter’s school prepares to head to the High

Court. The legal challenge was launched by the McClintock family after they alleged their daughter Violet was segregated and humiliated because her parents opted to take her out of religious studies.

The decision could have a significant impact on the education sector as the family’s lawyer is looking to repeal Section 78 of the Education Act, which could lead to religious studies being removed from state schools.

Mount Somers Springburn School principal Brent Gray said the board was reviewing the school’s policy because of the ambiguity around the religious instruction programme.

He said the Ministry of Education-provided enrolment forms were not clear about whether parents were opting in or opting out of the programme for their child.

“We were actually wondering ourselves how many parents actually realise that if there is religious instruction going on, if their children are actually involved or not, or are they involved and they didn’t want them to be,” he said.

While students were supervised separately if they did not participate, Mr Gray did not believe they would be singled out.

Restored vintage tractors snapped up

Nine lovingly restored vintage tractors were the big drawcards at a rural clearing sale on Saturday.

Peter Weily, 78, was selling the tractors and a large quantity of workshop equipment after he lost the use of the shed at Greenstreet where he had been storing the items.

Mr Weily said with age beginning to creep up on him and the high cost of renting elsewhere in Ashburton, it was time to clear out.

He has spent the past 11 years restoring tractors, working for about 12 months on each vehicle.

“I’d strip them all down, take the mudguards and wheels and so forth off, and then I’d clean them down with a wire brush, repaint them, and put them

back together again,” he said.

“I’ve quite enjoyed it, really.”

Among the highly sought after tractors were a 1938 Farmall McCormick Deering F20, a 1930 McCormick Deering W30, and a 1945 Farmall Cub. However it was the 1945 McCormick Deering W4 Standard tractor that belonged to his father that Mr Weily found hardest to part with.

“It was a tractor that my father used when he was pulling flax in the 1940s,” he said.

It was also the first tractor Mr Weily attempted to restore.

Mr Weily’s carefully restored treasures clearly caught the eye of some locals, with all of the items snapped up by the end of the day.

While Mr Weily said the sale was sad, it was time to let the items go.

Peter Weily, 78, has restored nine vintage tractors, which all found new homes at a rural clearing sale on Saturday.

ent,” he said. Churches Education Commission (CEC) spokeswoman Debra Hunt said the organisation supported the surveying of parents, but asked that relevant information was given to parents about the nature of the classes at their school so they could make an informed decision.

“Our programmes are very adaptable, so while there have been a few schools closing religious instruction completely, others have opened new programmes and many have made changes to their programmes in recent years,” she said.

Parents had until today to return their surveys.

Methven coup From p1 Mayor Angus McKay acknowledged the amount of work that had been put in to secure the conference and said it was exciting news for the district.

“The conference is an ideal opportunity to showcase all that we have to offer and for elected members and local government staff to see, first-hand, what a fantastic experience can be had in Ashburton District. I thank all those who have been involved in making our bid a success,” he said.

The conference provides a platform for elected members and local government staff to network, discuss and learn about current issues facing communities and develop strategies to better represent their constituents.

The conference will run over three days at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall and Heritage Centre in May 2017.

Masks not mandatory

The Canterbury District Health Board has announced it will not make its staff wear masks if they have not been immunised against influenza.

This comes after the MidCentral District Health Board in the North Island said it was looking at implementing mandatory mask-wearing, after only 44 per cent of its staff were immunised last year.

CDHB executive director of nursing Mary Gordon said the district health board’s rate of immunisation was high, and it aimed to vaccinate 80 per cent of staff.

Ms Gordon said the biggest identifiable barrier to getting staff vaccinated was them feeling unable to take time to get the vaccination.

So far this flu season the CDHB has vaccinated 3000 or 30 per cent of its staff.

As well as the clinics, the CDHB has launched the Immunise your Selfie campaign.

“It will play on the selfie phenomenon and will feature health staff from across the CDHB posing for a selfie either before, during or after their vaccination,” Ms Gordon said.

The campaign was set up to

promote the flu vaccine in a fun and interactive way.

Ms Gordon said the CDHB will continue to dispel myths about the vaccine through various avenues including team meetings, staff forums and newsletters.

Earlier this week Health Minister Jonathan Coleman announced that nationwide, more than one million doses of the seasonal influenza vaccine had now been distributed.

“This is the fourth year in a row where more than a million doses have been distributed,” Dr Coleman said.

“New Zealanders are protecting themselves, their families and their communities from influenza.”

Light quake A light quake was felt in Christchurch yesterday. The magnitude-3 earthquake came at 12.02pm and was 10 kilometres east of Christchurch at a depth of 11km. Eleven residents in the Christchurch area recorded feeling the shake and GeoNet reported it as light.

Lucky to be alive A man who went overboard from a fishing boat is lucky to be alive after a police helicopter spotted him - about 45 minutes after he had got into the water.

Police said the man had been on a fishing vessel near Pakatoa Island, in the Hauraki Gulf, when he went overboard at around 2am yesterday. Police said there were “grave fears” for the man. The police eagle chopper was sent out to help in the search for and found him in the water - alive. The police maritime unit, Deodar, was called out to rescue the man, who by then had spent about 45 minutes in the sea.

Auckland burglaries

Police were called out to two burglaries in Auckland in the early hours of yesterday. Just before 1am, a vehicle was reported to have crashed through the Deadly Ponies handbag store on Mackelvie Street, Ponsonby. Two men broke into the shop and took a number of high-end handbags before making off in a vehicle - later confirmed to be stolen - driven by a woman. The vehicle the men had initially used was also stolen. The police eagle helicopter tracked the trio and arrested them. About an hour after the incident, police were called out to Henderson, West Auckland, where a group of youths had been spotted breaking into a local bakery. The police eagle was sent out to the area and again tracked the offenders while police dogs worked to find them on the ground. The youths were found and property.

Quieter weather week

Kevin Hurley is the first to the bar at the Celtic Rugby Club and the last to leave every Saturday.

He isn’t there ordering round after round propping up the bar; he’s running the till, restocking the shelves - just simply running the show.

And has been for 35 years.

It is for that service to his rugby club that he was the 2015 recipient of the Robilliard Trophy for services to sport, at the Mid Canterbury Sports Awards on Friday night.

At the age of eight, Hurley

joined Celtic, playing through the grades including several seasons of senior in the late 1970s before a few more in the senior reserves.

Even before hanging his boots up, Hurley became a club man; helping out wherever he could, and when he finally retired from the field he assumed a role in the clubhouse on the committee.

Where many would have taken up a spot in the side-line and then at the bar, he ended up on the other side.

“It’s just something I enjoy doing and do so for the love of the game and my club.”

For the best part of three

decades he has assumed the responsibility of running the bar and kitchen at the club - often making him the first one there and the last to leave each Saturday.

Due to the unassuming modesty of the man, many wouldn’t realise the countless hours he puts in behind the scenes, to have the club operate the way it does.

His fellow committee members have never been certain of the actual number of hours he puts in and one estimate was between 20-30 hours.

“They exaggerated with that, but to be honest I don’t even know myself,” Hurley said.

The club even attempted to ease his workload, arranging a roster of club members to run the bar, so Hurley simply shuffled next door to the kitchen with his continued work ethic.

For his tireless efforts he became a life member of the club in 2010, a point at which many would have taken a step back having done such an enormous job for the club to gain the honour.

But not Kevin.

It only spurred him on to do more; running the club’s 90th jubilee and other projects to improve the grounds and facilities.

He has no plans of stopping anytime soon.

A quieter week is in store for New Zealanders after the wild weather that lashed the country last week. Fine spells mixed with isolated showers will hover around most of the country until a front comes through around Thursday, MetService meteorologist Stephen Glassey said. Auckland’s weather will be a typically mixed bag this week with showers, fine spells and southwesterly winds. The most significant weather pattern is a front that will move over the South Island around Thursday towards the North Island on Friday, Mr Glassey said. It will bring rain to most of the country, possibly heavy at times, and the chance of rain warnings in Westland and Fiordland, he said. After the front moves through on Friday there is another southerly sitting behind it, he said.

Property tax changes applauded Property Institute chief executive Ashley Church applauded the newlyannounced suite of tax and property measures.

But he labelled them more “welcome tweaks” than major policy changes and warned they would not tackle house price inflation in Auckland.

The decision to tax capital gains made on property sold within two years was a change in emphasis rather than a new policy, he said.

“It’s been government policy to levy tax on anyone buying an investment property with the intention of selling it at a profit, within 10 years of purchase, for as long as I can remember. So the real change here is that the Government is giving the IRD more resource to police that policy within the first two years of that purchase.”

Mr Church said while the move was not an unreasonable step and might even bring in a little more tax income - it would do little to reduce house prices.

“I wouldn’t imagine that there are too many speculators buying and

selling quickly in this market because capital growth is so strong. It’s more likely that most investors will hang on to their properties for a few years - at least until this current boom has run its course.”

Mr Church welcomed moves to identify foreign investors by requiring them to have a New Zealand tax number but he also doubted this would make any noticeable impact on the market.

“We’ve been calling for some form of registration of foreign investors for a while - not because we necessarily believe that they are skewing the market, but because all of the various opinions are based on guesswork until we actually have that information.”

Mr Church said the evidence, once collected, would probably show that foreign investors were a far smaller problem than generally believed.

“Overall, the changes get a tick.

They’re good, sensible, measures which [amplify] existing policy settings and allow for the collection of important information - but they’re not going to lead to a halt in Auckland house price inflation.” - NZME

Worker fighting for his life An experienced power line worker was last night fighting for his life after being flung from a live transformer in Auckland.

Michael van de Ruyt was working at a Vector substation in Bayswater when he was exposed to a 33,000 volt live transformer.

A family friend, who did not want to be named, said he was conscious

and shouting for help after the accident. He was taken by St John Ambulance to Middlemore Hospital’s burns unit in a critical condition.

He remains in a medically induced coma and it is understood he has burns to 35 per cent of his body.

His brother, Richard van de Ruyt, said family and friends had spent the day at his bedside.

Hundreds of people turned out in Ashburton yesterday as Wheels Week 2015 wrapped up for another year.

The popular event drew to a close with the Big Toys for Big Boys Contracting and Truck Show at the Ashburton Airport yesterday afternoon.

Earlier in the day vehicles of all shapes and sizes roared down East Street for the street parade, much to the delight of the hundreds of spectators who lined the street.

The weekend also saw the return of the

ever popular Celebrity Wheelchair Basketball, which saw local identities take on a wheelchair basketball team in a friendly game.

This year’s Wheels Week marked the event’s 25th anniversary.

President Ross Butterick praised the support the local community had given to the event over the years.

“I think Wheels Week has gone very, very well,” he said.

“The weather’s been kind to us, the Ashburton people and businesses have supported us, it’s been a real success right through,” he said.

Man praised for breaking religious protocol to help boy Harman Singh woke up on Saturday to hundreds of messages from around the world praising his humanity.

A picture of the 22-year-old Sikh breaking religious protocol by removing his turban to cradle a boy hit by a car has turned him into an instant hero.

Mr Singh has revealed he shouldn’t have even been at the scene.

He told the Herald on Sunday

that he was only at home when the incident happened because he changed his shift as a bakery delivery driver the day before.

“I would normally have been at work, so the timing was a bit of luck,” he said. “I thought I would be having a quiet morning off.”

Mr Singh said he was in bed when he heard tyres screeching and rushed outside. “I saw a little boy lying in the road and

there was a lot of blood coming from the back of his head.

“A lady was holding him and he wasn’t moving. I feared the worst. His mother was there, too and she was in shock.”

The boy was going to school with his sister when the accident happened outside his house in Takanini, South Auckland, on Friday morning.

Mr Singh has since received hundreds of Facebook hero-

grams from as far afield as the US, Europe and India, he said.

His story has been shared tens of thousands of times on social media.

Mr Singh, 22, from India, is in Auckland studying a business course. His act is considered a hugely significant because it breaks strict religious protocol.

He was overwhelmed at the number of messages of support from around the globe.

“Total strangers are asking to be friends on Facebook and thousands of people have said ‘Well done’.”

The boy was thought to have suffered life-threatening head injuries but is recovering in Starship Hospital after surgery.

“He had multiple injuries but is in a stable condition and has a period of recovery in front of him,” a spokeswoman said.

‘No-surprises’ Budget Auckland’s housing supply, immigration and defence are set to be at the front of this week’s ‘no-surprises’ Budget announcement.

Finance minister Bill English will present government’s annual spending plan on Thursday and while he won’t “open the presents before Christmas morning”, he will say no revolutionary changes are on the way.

Thursday’s most anticipated chapter will be Auckland’s housing debacle - and how government’s next move will impact an increasingly strained relationship with Auckland Council over how to fix rocketing prices and a serious supply problem.

With QV figures declaring the average cost of an Auckland house is now over $800,000 (way over the national average of $507,040), toughening lending restrictions and the

Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment predicting a further 22,000 new houses are needed on top of Auckland Council’s 10-year plan for 50,000 new homes, the situation is pricing many out of the market entirely.

Fuelling the fire, Auckland’s booming population of 1.5 million is tipped to have another one million people added to it over the next three decades.

Housing Minister Nick Smith warned earlier this month that “government also has the power to create special housing areas without the approval of the Auckland Council if they choose to overplay their cards and demands for money”.

English says Auckland’s supply issue is absolutely on the agenda - hinting at the special housing areas already mentioned by Smith.

“This budget will be focussing on the same sort of ar-

eas we’ve focussed on before, so part of it is about doing what we can to sustain this moderate economic growth.

“At the moment, the factor that could potentially have impact on that has been the muchdiscussed Auckland housing market,” English said.

“We’re not relying on stuff in the budget as a way of dealing with it, but it’s part of an ongoing process of the government doing what it can to develop it’s own real estate and support Auckland Council and the decisions it has to make.”

is needed for the continued rebuild of Christchurch after the devastating 2011 earthquakes.

“There’s additional costs coming through to government, so the budget will show further increases in the taxpayers’ contribution to the rebuild of Christchurch,” he said.

“We’ll be moving pretty quickly after the Budget to progress some of our hardcore issues, particularly better results with reducing welfare and increasing educational achievement. “it’s a case of sticking with a plan that’s working.”

What hasn’t worked was English’s goal from Budget 2014, that this year government would return to surplus.

English dismissing criticism of the shortfall, insisting the economic trajectory is on the right track and the surplus goal will be scored this time around instead.

Deaf boy assaulted A 14-year-old deaf boy has been assaulted while playing with friends at Van Asch College in Christchurch. The unprovoked attack was carried out by two white males as the boy played spotlight on the grounds of the Sumner school. One male punched the boy in the face and kicked him in the thigh. Police said it was believed both the attackers had been drinking.

Kapiti Line repairs The final repairs to Wellington’s transport system are taking place after the damaging storm that hit the area on Thursday. More work is required to fix sections of the Kapiti Line which was damaged by a slide in the wild weather on May 14. The line from Plimmerton to Waikanae would be out of service today between 9.30am and 3pm and services would be replaced by bus.

Four injured in crash A car ripped a BP petrol pump from the ground before crashing into a Burger King in South Auckland yesterday. The incident occurred about 4.30am on Bader Drive in Mangere. Four ambulance crews attended and four occupants of the car were taken to Middlemore Hospital with moderate to serious injuries.

Inspector Willie Taylor said alcohol and speed were contributing factors.

Man stabbed A man has been stabbed in Manurewa following an argument between two men on the street.

Emergency services were called to the incident. The injured man was taken to Middlemore Hospital in a critical condition with stab wounds to his chest. Police said there were reports an argument between two men spilled out onto the street and one of the men was armed with a knife. The victim is reported to be in a serious condition and will undergo surgery, police said.

Transitional minister settles in at the Plains Parish

The Plains Presbyterian Parish’s new transitional minister, based at Methven, describes himself as “a retired minister who is recycled”.

Ralph Penno was brought up on a South Canterbury farm and now has his home in Marlborough, although he has not spent a great deal of time there in recent years.

After being in active ministry since 1970, over the past six years he has undertaken transitional roles in Taranaki, Kaikoura, Hanmer and Nelson.

Now he has been called by the

new Plains Presbyterian Parish, which had its inaugural service at Methven’s St John’s church earlier this month.

The new parish has been created following closure of the former Methven, Mayfield and Rakaia Presbyterian parishes.

Mr Penno will be working with the parish for a ninemonth term, with a possible three-month extension, while members seek permanent ministry.

He will help the new group grow into the parish it wants to be, as well as lead some services.

“That (parish) will now begin

to discover what its mission is, who will carry out that mission, who will lead that mission, so they have a lot of work ahead of them,” Mr Penno said.

He and wife Ruth are parents of four boys, and have 15 grandchildren.

They moved into the St John’s manse one week ago, and are enjoying being in the “relaxed country town”.

They have a son and his family farming nearby, so are familiar with the area.Mr Penno led his first service, on Sunday, following the inaugural service of the new parish, attended by about 45 parishioners, the pre-

vious Sunday at Methven.

Services are to continue in the parishes’ individual church buildings at Methven, Rakaia and Mayfield, just as they always have, except for the first Sunday of the month, when all parishioners will gather at Methven.

Mr Penno is the moderator of the new parish’s governance council.

The interim moderator is Lincoln Presbyterian parish minister Phyll Harris.

She has been appointed by the Alpine Presbytery to the role, and will lead the task of finding a new full-time minister.

Cigarettes were the only items stolen in an aggravated robbery at a Dunedin service station in the early hours of yesterday. Multiple offenders held up a Mobil service station on Hillside road, police said, but the service station worker was not injured. Police said they wanted to hear from anyone who was in the area around 2am who observed any suspicious activity.

One killed in car crash A person is dead following a crash in Hawke’s Bay yesterday.

The crash happened at the intersections of Ruahapia Road and Otene Road, north of Hastings, just before 3.30pm, central communications shift commander John Spence said. It was not yet known if the person who was killed was a man or woman. The Serious Crash Unit attended, he said.

In brief Nepal aid The Red Cross has ramped up its appeal for aid to disaster-hit Nepal, requesting $US93 million ($NZ124.5 million) in assistance after two earthquakes in less than three weeks killed nearly 8500 and left thousands homeless.

Relief teams have been working for weeks to provide water, food, shelter and medical assistance after the first, 7.8-magnitude quake hit on April 25, flattening whole villages and leaving thousands without shelter with just weeks to go until the monsoon rains.

Egypt sentences Morsi to death

By Tony Gamal-GaBriel An Egyptian court has sentenced deposed Islamist president Mohamed Morsi and more than 100 others to death for their role in a mass jailbreak during the 2011 uprising.

Hours after the ruling, gunmen shot dead three judges in the strife-torn Sinai Peninsula.

Morsi, sitting in a caged dock in the blue uniform of convicts having already been sentenced to 20 years for inciting violence, raised his fists in defiance when the judge read out his verdict.

The judge issued the same

sentence to more than 100 other defendants including Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badei, who has also been handed the death penalty in another trial, and his deputy Khairat al-Shater.

Morsi, who rose to the presidency in 2012 as the Brotherhood’s compromise candidate after Shater was disqualified, won an election and ruled for only a year before mass protests prompted the military to overthrow him in July 2013.

He and dozens of other Islamist leaders were then detained amid a crackdown that

left hundreds of his supporters dead.

Many of those sentenced were tried in absentia, including prominent Islamic cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi, who resides in Qatar.

Under Egyptian law, death sentences are passed on to the mufti, the government’s interpreter of Islamic law, who plays an advisory role. The defendants can appeal even after the mufti’s recommendation.

The court will pronounce its final decision on June 2.

“If he (Morsi) decides that we appeal against the verdict,

then we will. If he continues to not recognise this court, then we won’t appeal,” said defence lawyer Abdel Moneim Abdel Maksoud.

Amnesty International lashed out at the verdict, saying it reflected “the deplorable state of the country’s criminal justice system”.

“The death penalty has become the favourite tool for the Egyptian authorities to purge the political opposition,” Said Boumedouha of Amnesty said in a statement from the London-based rights watchdog.

US commandos kill top IS leader in Syria US commandos have killed a senior Islamic State group leader in a night raid into Syria, as IS jihadists seized the northern part of Syria’s ancient desert city of Palmyra.

Across the border, IS battled Iraqi army reinforcements in the strategic western city of Ramadi, while Turkey said its armed forces had shot down a Syrian helicopter that had violated its airspace.

US President Barack Obama approved the special forces raid on Al-Omar in east Syria on Friday night to capture senior IS leader Abu Sayyaf and his wife Umm Sayyaf, the government said.

The bold operation, with elite commandos striking at IS’s inner circle, was a rare use of “boots on the ground” by the

US, which has fought the jihadists almost entirely from the air.

White House national security spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said Abu Sayyaf, who played a senior role in IS’s lucrative oil operations, “was killed when he engaged US forces”.

US Secretary of Defence Ash Carter called the operation a “significant blow” to IS, while Adam Schiff, a Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said US attacks “have put increasing pressure on the economics undergirding the terrorist organisation”.

Meehan said US forces based out of Iraq conducted the raid “with the full consent” of the Iraqi authorities. They suffered no casualties, officials said, without giving details on the

number involved.

Members of the elite Delta special operations unit descended on Sayyaf ’s compound in Black Hawk helicopters and Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft, a defence official told AFP. US troops killed “about a dozen” militants in a gun battle before fighting them “at very close quarters ... there was hand-to-hand combat”, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

News of the raid comes the day after Washington authorised sending weapons to the Iraqi military after IS made key territorial gains, seizing a government compound in the strategic Iraqi city of Ramadi.

Fighters have also taken over the northern neighbourhoods of the Syrian city of Palmyra

following an assault on the ancient metropolis that has seen them execute 49 people in two days, a monitoring group said.

“IS advanced and took control of most of northern Palmyra, and there are fierce clashes happening now,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The head of Syria’s antiquities department, Mamoum Abdulkarim, voiced extreme concern for the UNESCO world heritage site located to Palmyra’s southwest.

“I am living in a state of terror,” Abdulkarim told AFP, adding that IS “will blow everything up. They will destroy everything” if they enter the site.

Ireland could become the first country in the world to vote for same-sex marriage in a historic referendum this week in the traditionally Catholic nation.

Voters on Friday will be asked whether or not to add an article to the Irish constitution saying: “Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex.” The latest polls show the “Yes” side in the lead.

Peru emergency Peru has declared a state of emergency in part of the country after deep cracks caused by heavy rains appeared in a village. The gaping crevasses have worsened over several weeks in the northern Ancash region, making some houses uninhabitable and prompting the emergency resolution by the government.

The cracks looked similar to faults caused by earthquakes, but experts said heavy rains in March and April caused soil shifts and the expansion and contraction of earth, causing the ground to split.

Gored by bison A 16-year-old girl from Taiwan has been gored by a bison in Yellowstone National Park in the US while posing for a picture near the animal. The National Park Service says the unidentified girl’s injuries were serious but not lifethreatening. The girl was airlifted to hospital.

FBI to investigate The FBI is being called in to determine if a projectile struck a commuter train before it crashed in the US city of Philadelphia, killing eight people. An assistant conductor aboard the locomotive reported that she heard the train’s engineer say it was struck by something shortly before the crash, National Transportation Safety Board member Robert Sumwalt said during a news conference.

Train crash kills two Two people have been killed and 20 others injured when a passenger train collided with a tractor trailer carrying manure in northwest Germany, police say.

Of the 20 injured, three were in critical condition, said a local police spokesperson. After the collision, the train continued for 150 to 200 metres before stopping, according to the same source.

Passion rewarded Stu Oldham

wimmers may have scooped the pool but it is clear the passion and commitment that make local sports great runs deep in Mid Canterbury.

The Mid Canterbury Sports Awards reinforced what people in sport already know and what 14-times awards organiser Jan Cochrane has consistently reminded us: that our province’s sportspeople are among the best.

The breadth of local sporting participation and representation at the awards was breath-taking, and the work of the administrators and supporters was inspiring and humbling.

The master of ceremonies marvelled at the number of young sportspeople who received awards out of the multiple sports to which they played to a high level.

He joked there must not be enough to do in Mid Canterbury, wondering whether the province was blessed not to have the usual distractions of Sky TV. Of course, the reverse is true but the jokes threw into stark relief the reality of the achievements recognised at the district’s premier sporting awards.

Many nominees enjoyed success across many disciplines but their achievements were not all linked to ditching the television or the tablet.

They got there through hard work and focused performance.

And, as many said in their speeches, with the support of the people who mattered.

Parents, siblings, coaches and teammates were acknowledged for the work and encouragement they shared to help the nominees achieve their goals.

Junior sportsperson of the year, swimmer Matthew Harford, thanked his mum for her early morning wake-up calls, while swimmer and senior sportsperson of the year Steve Prescott thanked his understanding wife.

The coaches, officials and administrators who accepted awards spoke of understanding partners and of the joy in watching their sportspeople achieve in their codes. Many said they were recognised for doing what they enjoyed doing.

Their honest modesty was as striking as their dedication and achievements. But then, Mid Canterbury sport is fortunate to have so many people who work so hard to let their successes do the talking.

ast week, as Associate Minister for Primary Industries with responsibility for forestry, I announced the reboot of the Afforestation Grant Scheme (AGS).

The announcement, part of Budget 2015, included the provision of $22.5 million over six years to encourage forest planting.

Under the previous scheme, which ran from 2008 until 2013, about 25 hectares were planted in the Ashburton and Timaru areas within the total planting of 12,000 hectares.

The new scheme will take up where its highly successful predecessor left off. Farmers and landowners can again use the AGS to make better use of marginal land and increase farming diversification.

The rebooted AGS is expected to generate 15,000 hectares of new forest with planting beginning in the winter of 2016. Priority will be given to farmers and landowners with erosion prone land between five and 300 hectares. Applications open next week with successful applicants receiving $1300 per hectare for new forest planting.

improving overall water quality and the use of poorly performing land for more profitable forestry.

Increased forest planting under the previous AGS led to an additional 1.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide stored in our forests, mitigating climate change and counting towards New Zealand’s national emission reduction targets. During their lifetime the additional plantings will store 1.9 million tonnes of additional carbon.

We also expect that over the life cycle of these trees, from planting through to harvesting, the AGS will make a significant contribution to the forestry industry and support services, increase jobs and help grow our regional economies across New Zealand.

ACC savings on cards Does paying one-third of what you currently pay in ACC levies on your car sound like a good idea to you? Yes? The Government thinks so too.

The average ACC motor vehicle levy (including the annual licence levy and petrol levy) is expected to drop to around $120 from 2016, saving New Zealand families a wad of cash.

This is on top of the already confirmed reduction, from around $330 currently, to $195 kicking in from July 1 this year.

Since 2012, ACC levy reductions have saved New Zealanders around $1.5 billion – and we’ve just announced another $500 million of indicative reductions as part of the upcoming Budget.

vehicle levies, we are looking at a 20 cent reduction in the average Work Account Levy, and 6 cents in the Earners Account Levy. We are committed to at least half a billion dollars in reductions, but final decisions will be made after public consultation.

These are real savings for New Zealand families. But they are also prudent and balanced measures made possible by ACC’s sound financial performance. It’s the right time to do this, after we’ve overseen a dramatic turnaround in ACC’s finances.

The Government is committed to setting ACC levies in a way that is fair to both levy payers and claimants and maintains ACC’s ability to the meet the needs of New Zealanders in the future.

QUICK MEAL

Ginger and lime pumpkin mash The lime juice and ginger give a great taste.

Serves 4 1.2kg wedge of pumpkin, seeds removed 3 T lite olive oil 2 t lime juice 1 t grated ginger ¼ C sour cream ¼-½ C milk pinch salt freshly ground black pepper, to taste ■ Place pumpkin in the microwave and cook on high power for 8-10 minutes or until pumpkin is soft and tender.

■ Cool until pumpkin can be handled. Remove skin.

■ Place pumpkin, oil, lime juice, ginger, sour cream and ¼ cup milk into a saucepan.

■ Mash to a smooth consistency adding more milk if necessary.

■ Season and reheat. Serve.

Skiing reaches new heights

T

he three travellers at Munich’s airport are getting some unbelieving stares from other passengers checking in.

Siggi, Manfred and Egbert are loaded down with touring ski gear - not an unusual sight these days in Munich.

But what is unusual is their flight destination: Marrakesh.

Skiing in northern Africa?

The other passengers seem to be wondering.

There is good snow a couple of hours’ drive from Munich.

Maybe the three men have strayed into the wrong check-in lane?

But a few hours later, as the plane makes its descent into Marrakesh, the penny drops: about 80 kilometres south of the city, rising majestically – and covered in snow – are the mighty Atlas Mountains.

“Morocco and skiing are something that even the most experienced touring ski freaks rarely think of in the same sentence,” says ski guide Hans Honold, whose mountaineering

North Africa and skiing are not first choice bedfellows, but Manuel Meyer went along for the ride anyway to see what all the fuss was about. and skiing school Alpine Welten (Alpine Worlds) is one of the few firms specialising in ski tours of the Atlas Mountains.

“The Atlas has some very challenging mountains and some fantastically beautiful landscapes in which you are almost all alone.”

The Moroccan ski season is mainly between January and early April.

A minibus takes a group of ski trekkers – these are the hardy types who eschew ski lifts and cableways, and instead climb the mountains that they will later ski down – past small villages of adobe houses and dried fields.

The first night is spent in Tacheddirt, a Berber village in Toubkal National Park.

From here, Honold and local guide Hassim will lead the group on a 1200-metre climb

up Tizi Likemt, a mountain that tops out at 3555 metres.

The night before the tour, Siggi, Manfred, Egbert and Hans relax in a simple rustic hotel in the village, with a meal of couscous and lamb.

The night is bitterly cold.

The next morning, with mules hired to carry the skis and skiing boots up to the snow line, the group hikes past some orchards and walnut trees in blossom.

The hikers must then make their way through a landscape of rocks and boulders before they can finally snap on their skis.

The trail goes steeply up along a ridge, and all of a sudden clouds start to form, and soon nothing more can be seen of nearby Bou Igouenouance, 3882 metres.

The group is forced to break

off the climb and return to the village.

This provides time to take a closer look at Tacheddirt, a place looking as if it had been made for a picture postcard.

The mud and stone huts are close to the steep mountain slopes. Women are sweeping snow from the huts’ flat roofs.

The Germans in their colourful ski gear are a major attraction for the village children.

Now the group returns to Imlil.

The small town, regarded as the gateway to Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak of North Africa at 4167 metres, has for decades been the starting point for trekking tours, and now skiing tours.

It takes nearly five hours to climb to the Toubkal hut, almost completely snowed in.

breathtaking view of the valley far below. The hut is full to overflowing with skiers there to spend the night.

Early the next morning, before sunrise, Honold wakes his group.

After crossing the small Mizane brook, there is the steep climb to the summit about 1000 metres up the mountain.

It is bitterly cold, but there is fresh new snow and the skies are a perfect blue.

The trail along a ridge rises in zig-zag fashion.

The sun is beating down mercilessly, while at the same time an ice-cold wind is stinging the skiers’ faces.

About 100 metres below the summit, the group take off their skis and backpacks to climb the final stretch, up a terrain of ice and boulders, on foot. Finally, they reach the summit.

Guide Hassim points out that “in very clear weather, from here you can see both the Sahara and the Atlantic Ocean at the same time”.

In brief McIlroy still the best World No.1 Rory McIlroy fired an electrifying course-record 11-under par 61 yesterday to seize the lead after the third round of the US PGA Tour’s Wells Fargo Championship in North Carolina.

McIlroy’s effort gave him an 18-under total of 198 and a fourshot lead over American Webb Simpson, who shot a 68 and is alone at 14-under. McIlroy had 11 birdies with no bogeys to break his own Quail Hollow course record of 62. “I feel like the best player in the world and I wanted to go out there and prove that,” the 26-year-old from Northern Ireland said. - AFP

Coach happy with first win

Hampstead-Collegians claimed their first win of the season in the Mid-South Canterbury hockey competition on Saturday.

It was a good weekend for the local sides with three wins and a draw, and it all started with Hampstead-Collegians’ 1-0 win over Geraldine at the NBS Ashburton Hockey Turf.

Kate Donald found the back of the net mid-way through the second half which was

enough for the side to register their first win.

“It was a good, tough game and great to come away with the win,” Hampstead-Collegians coach Donna Mealings said.

“We had plenty of opportunities but one was enough to do it.

“We just have to get a bit savvier at scoring goals.”

Hampstead remain unbeaten but their winning run start to the season ended with a 1-1 draw with Cambridge in the top-of-the-table clash.

It was Cambridge who went ahead scoring in the first half before Hampstead equalised in the second half through Mel Weitenberg, and neither side could then break the deadlock.

In the men’s competition Wakanui Blue had an emphatic 5-0 win over Northern Hearts in Ashburton.

Thomas White had a hattrick in the first half with Hayden Sinclair making it 4-0 at the break, before Scott Marshall’s lone strike in a much tighter second half.

It was Blue’s second straight win while last year’s runner-up, Hearts, have now suffered four straight losses to start the season.

An Adam Wilson hat-trick led Wakanui Black to a good bonus-point 5-3 win over Cambridge in Timaru.

Hayden Bonnington bagged a brace alongside Wilson’s three goals as the defending champions registered back-to-back wins following a round two defeat to Tainui, who remain the only unbeaten team after a 7-1 win over Timaru Boys.

French duo make British squash history

By RichaRd eaton France’s Gregory Gaultier and Camille Serme made history with their semi-finals wins at the British Open and could yet make more of it in one of the most surprising editions in the tournament’s 93-year existence.

It is the first time France has provided finalists in both the men’s and women’s events, and the first time any Frenchwoman has ever made the British Open final - but players from England and Columbia also al-

tered the record books in the north English coastal town of Hull yesterday.

The most notable was Laura Massaro, whose 5-11 9-11 11-9 12-10 11-8 triumph from match-point down against the legendary titleholder from Malaysia, Nicol David, made her the first Englishwoman to reach three British Open finals since 1967.

But defending champion Gaultier’s 11-9 11-3 11-9 victory was also a landmark occasion, coming as it did against the first South American ever

to reach a major squash semifinal, Miguel Rodrigues of Columbia.

If Gaultier and Serme both win again it will be a massive French breakthrough in a sport which may gain Olympic acceptance next year.

However, Gaultier faces world number one Mohamed El Shorbagy, whose 11-7 11-7 11-5 win over Nick Matthew ended the 34-year-old Englishman’s hopes of becoming the oldest British Open champion of the professional era, for this year at least.

Gaultier may have a fair chance of upsetting the odds, but Serme will need to find another special performance to get past Massaro.

That is because the 31-yearold, just back from a break in which she pondered quitting squash, produced the most startling comeback of her career to end David’s British Open title defence. Massaro came from two games and 0-5 down in the third, and then from match point down at 9-10 in the fourth, to overcome David 5-11 9-11 11-9 12-10 11-8. - AFP

Lydia Ko has recorded another solid round at the LPGA Tour’s Kingsmill Championship, shooting a one-under par 70 to move into a tie for 20th. The round moved Ko to three-under par for the tournament, stringing together three birdies to go with two bogies to jump up two spots. Ko’s main rival for the world number one ranking - Inbee Park - fired two late birdies to also shoot oneunder and remain the one stroke ahead of Ko at four-under, in a tie for 16th.

Court holes upset Serbian Novak Djokovic was among three Italian Open finalists to hit out at organisers after a “dangerous” semi-final win in which he escaped twisting his ankle in holes that appeared on court. Djokovic, the defending champion and top seed, will play Swiss rival Roger Federer today’s final at the Foro Italico in Rome after ousting Spain’s David Ferrer 6-4 6-4. But several times during his match, Djokovic called officials to fill in holes which began appearing near the baseline. With fewer than 10 days to the start of the French Open, Djokovic was in no mood for suffering an injury that would compound his bid for a first title in Paris.

Suarez into Italian final Spanish 10th seed Carla Suarez kept herself in contention for only her second career WTA title by squeezing past Simona Halep of Romania 2-6 6-3 7-5 and into the final of the Italian Open yesterday.

Russian third seed Maria Sharapova then qualified for the decider with a 7-5 6-3 win over Australia-based Daria Gavrilova. Sharapova, the favourite following the third-round withdrawal of defending champion Serena Williams, claimed a second successive Rome title in 2012.

Contador in control Despite nursing an injured shoulder, Alberto Contador protected his Giro d’Italia lead yesterday as Spanish compatriot Benat Intxausti won the mountainous 186km eighth stage. Two days after dislocating his shoulder in a nasty crash during the sprint finish to the sixth stage, Contador was on the defensive from Fiuggi to Campitello Matese. He responded to several attacks from chief rivals Fabio Aru and Richie Porte on the final climb to the summit finish and crossed the line fifth with Porte sixth.

Melbourne Vixens have vowed to make amends in a blockbuster clash with archrivals NSW Swifts when a trans-Tasman netball playoff berth will likely be settled.

Defending champions Vixens (6-5) kept their slim finals hopes alive with a 56-48 upset win over previous competition leaders West Coast Fever yesterday. They were led by brilliant shooting from Karyn Bailey, who ended the match with 39 goals from 42 attempts and the MVP award, and dominant defence from Geva Mentor. The Swifts maintained their good form with a 68-49 home thrashing of Canterbury Tactix yesterday, with goalkeeper Sharni Layton hugely influential as shooter Susan Pettit made 31 of 34 attempts and goal attack Caitlin Thwaites bagged 31 of 33. - AAP

competition Mid Canterbury United Eastern scored a 3-0 victory over Western in division four, while Methven suffered a 5-7 loss to Universities in division five.

The MCU 18s side won 3-0

away to FC Twenty11 in 18th grade division three, while in division four action the Methven 18s defeated St Bede’s 4th XI 4-2.

The MCU 16s had a 4-1 away win over Shirley Boys in

16th grade division one.

In women’s football yesterday Methven A won 5-0 against Western in division one, while Methven B were beaten 2-7 by Western B in the division two competition.

Victory claim third A-League crown

By Ben McKay Melbourne Victory scored an historic third A-League championship with a deserved 3-0 win over Sydney FC in the grand final.

A scintillating first-half Besart Berisha half-volley was followed by late goals to Kosta Barbarouses and Leigh Broxham in the final ten minutes to give Melbourne Victory an empathic scoreline.

In contrast to the two sides’ attacking reputations, grand final success was achieved through slog rather than style.

In the absence of full fluency going forward, Victory harassed and pressured Sydney into submission.

From the very first whistle, Victory showed the intensity of a champion team.

Led by inspirational captain Mark Milligan, Victory were simply everywhere, defending

from the very front.

A raucous crowd of 29,843 kept their spirits high throughout, creating the intense atmosphere predicted by Victory coach Kevin Muscat.

Muscat, who celebrated wildly after Broxham’s third goal, becomes the first man to captain and coach a team to an ALeague championship.

The success is Victory’s first in five years and gives the club an A-League record befitting

their off-field stature.

In the first 30 minutes, the Sky Blues had completed just 24 passes and shortly after they were behind.

Firebirds crush T-Birds The Queensland Firebirds have extended their trans-Tasman netball league winning streak to eight with a comprehensive 16 goal win over the Adelaide Thunderbirds on Saturday. In front of almost 5000 fans at Adelaide Arena, the Firebirds outscored the Thunderbirds in each quarter to lead at every change and win the round 12 clash 58-42. This week is looming as one of the most important in the Blues’ history as its divided board meet in an attempt to resolve the John Kirwan issue which is threatening to tear the franchise apart. Chiefs content with rematch

BY KRIS SHANNON A defeat in Wellington may have handed the Hurricanes home advantage in the playoffs, but the Chiefs will hold no fear if a rematch eventually decides the season.

Though they walked away losers on Saturday night, the Chiefs were one debatable decision away from knocking off the table-toppers with a severely under-strength side.

Dave Rennie’s men blunted the Hurricanes’ high-powered attack, executing a defensive game plan that restricted the home side to their second-lowest points total of the season.

They shrugged off the withdrawal of two of their main attacking weapons - James Lowe and Sonny Bill Williams - and they played 45 minutes without a recognised lock after Michael Fitzgerald and Michael Allardice succumbed to injury.

And had Augustine Pulu’s late try been awarded, as replays suggested it should have, the Chiefs would have emerged with one of the more impressive regular-season victories of Rennie’s tenure.

That the result went against them confirmed two things: First, the Hurricanes are almost certain to finish top of the New Zealand conference and seal a

home semi-final, at least. And second, the Chiefs will be more than happy to head back to Wellington deep in the playoffs.

They have to get there first, with three of their final four matches coming against sides currently sitting inside the top six.

But if they do punch their ticket to the post-season - and if the likes of Lowe, Williams, Tim Nanai-Williams, Brodie Retallick and Matt Symons return from injury - the finalshardened Chiefs will welcome the challenge of facing a Hurricanes franchise whose last trip to the playoffs came in 2009.

Having a couple of fit locks

will certainly help their cause.

Liam Messam and Liam Squire were left in the second row “hopefully never again”, joked the Chiefs captain - and young Waikato lock Brian Alainu’uese could receive a call up.

The Chiefs’ pack still held its own against the Hurricanes and Messam was proud of the way his charges responded to the injury adversity.

“We’ve got huge character in our group and we just had to get on with the job,” he said. “The boys showed big heart and big ticker and took it all the way to 80 minutes - it was just disappointing to come away without the result.”

Rakaia may miss playoffs

All five Mid Canterbury sides recorded wins in the eighth round of the Combined Country Cup rugby competition.

Rakaia’s 24-0 win over Hornby on Friday night may not have been enough to keep them in the playoff picture.

The win has Rakaia still in sixth place, and three points off the top four.

Glenmark moved to top spot and have locked in a quarterfinal berth following a bonus point 43-15 win over West Melton.

Oxford’s 21-20 upset over Southbridge has them a likely candidate to maintain their place in the top four.

With Oxford and Southbridge set to play the bottom two teams in the section, they are favourites to collect four points each and maintain a top four spot.

Lincoln remain in the hunt in fifth after a 15-12 win over Prebbleton and face a crucial clash with Celtic in the last round.

Celtic moved up to second place after they beat Kaiapoi but will still require a win in the final week to be assured of finals football.

Section two also had a shakeup after the previously unbeaten Waihora were beaten at home by Darfield 15-19.

Methven moved into top spot after a narrow 20-18 win over Ashley and third-placed Southern continued to surge towards the playoffs with a big 43-26 win over Burnham-Dunsandel.

Hampstead collected a bonus point 43-15 win over Ohoka to remain sixth and an outside chance of a top four finish should both Darfield and Burnaham-Dunsandel both fall over in the final week.

In the other match Saracens beat Rolleston 39-5.

Hornby v Rakaia Rakaia’s playoff chances may have disappeared on a wet, cold and windy night at Denton Park.

Their 24-0 win over Hornby only had three tries, meaning they missed out on what could be a crucial bonus point.

Playing into the wind, Rakaia had three potential tries disallowed in what could prove a fatal blow to their playoff hopes as they could only manage three tries in the second half.

“That bonus point could really cost us,” Rakaia coach Wayne Foxcroft said. “It could have been the difference if things went our way but we’ll just have to go out and do our best next week to see what happens.”

An Andrew Letham penalty was the only scoring action in the first half.

They would have dearly loved a fourth.

The losses to Oxford and Glenmark at home in recent weeks derailed Rakaia, and with results not really going their way elsewhere at the weekend the missed bonus point may not even factor into the equation next weekend.

Celtic v Kaiapoi Celtic survived a second half scoring spree to bank a bonus point 27-24 win over Kaiapoi.

The hosts delivered a top shelf first half, but were left scrapping at the death to hold on for the win.

“We played particularly well in the first half - exactly how we wanted to for us to go to the break 20-5 up,” Celtic coach Warren Mackenzie said.

“I think we thought we had it in the bag but after a few mistakes Kaiapoi lifted.

“It was a close call, we held on and hopefully it was lesson learned.”

Two tries to Sean Strange and one from Nathan McCloy, along with a conversion and penalty from the boot of McCloy had the hosts handily placed at the break.

Celtic buttoned off and Kaiapoi came storming back before a converted try to veteran Jason Feutz put Celtic back in the box seat.

Another try from the visitors set up the thrilling finish.

Kaiapoi turned down a long range shot at goal for a draw with time up and ran it looking for the win, only for Celtic to force a turnover to hold on.

Ashley v Methven Methven had to come from behind to beat Ashley 20-18 at Loburn and move to the top of section two.

For Methven coach Dale Palmer it was another frustrating performance, watching his side start so well only to falter and let the home side take control.

“We made hard work of it again,” Palmer said.

“We started strongly but just dropped off again. It was a great opening 20 minutes where we played to our plan and with purpose, only to finish the half pushing passes and making the same old silly mistakes.

“We had to step it up at the end to get the result and unlike the week before they were able to get the job done.”

Fullback Brenton Connell scored twice in the first half with a conversion and penalty from Nick Wacwitz putting the

visitors up 15-10 at the break.

An Ashley try and a penalty had them take the lead with 10 minutes to go.

Methven dug deep and replacement prop Aofia Fagalima barged over in the dying minutes to put his side in front for a valuable away win.

Southern v Burnham-Dunsandel Southern overturned a halftime deficit with a superior second half performance to beat Burnham-Dunsandel 43-26 in Mayfield.

Coach Jason Rickard said the first half was “like watching a different team” before they got going in the second half.

“We couldn’t get into the game but it was a different side that came out after halftime and an early try had us turn the corner.”

Williams scored a further two tries for his hat-trick along with tries to fellow winger Micky Collins and flanker Jon Dampney with three conversions from Miller.

The bonus point win puts Southern in contention to earn a home quarter-final if they can beat Ashley next week, with the two sides ahead of them, Methven and Waihora, set to square off.

Hampstead v Ohoka Having bungled their way through the first half, Hampstead turned on five tries in the second stanza to run away 43-15 winners over Ohoka.

The first half was one to forget with coach Regan Broker believing they didn’t deserve to go to the break ahead.

“It was terrible. They were still in the changing rooms,” Broker said. “The boys were flat and we were trying score off the first phase without doing any hard work.”

Despite the poor start Hampstead got off to a flyer with an early try to Sia Fifita, but Ohoka answered back with an unconverted try of their own.

Flanker Toafa Touli then converted his own try with Ohoka scoring their second to make it 12-10 at the break.

A halftime serve had Hampstead come out firing with tries to Esera Lauina, Kalifi Faalogo and Kenny Faalavaau all converted by Tevita Tupou, and a further two to Tevita Ula and Josh Nonu.

Ohoka, playing with 14 men for much of the second half after two injuries to their 16-man squad, came up with a consolation try from a quick tap after Hampstead had tried to run it from their own goal line.

Frosty grabs V8 series lead

By Roje AdAimy Mark Winterbottom believes Ford is back to its best, but he’s intent on not getting carried away with his return to the top of the V8 Supercars championship.

The veteran capped off a stellar weekend in Winton for Prodrive Racing Australia with victory in yesterday’s 200km feature race, adding to his win and podium finish in Saturday’s two sprints.

The results pushed him ahead of Holden rival Craig Lowndes on the overall standings, with just 12 points now separating the pair after four rounds.

Winterbottom was leading the series by 107 points at this point last season, only to give it up with a run of poor results.

Asked whether he can hold onto it in 2015, given the clear improved qualifying performance of his new Falcon FG X, the 33-year-old was unsure.

“Who knows?” he said.

“I thought this round might be tough, but it’s proven to be a good one for us.

“I’m looking forward to enjoying this, celebrating it at the workshop because the team really deserve it.

“We’ll try to drag that out for five weeks and then either get brought back to earth in Darwin (in June) or have another good result.”

Lowndes managed to salvage a third-place yesterday behind Winterbottom and fellow Commodore driver Fabian Coulthard.

He said the result was “satisfying” after qualifying poorly and only finishing 12th and eighth in Saturday’s two races.

Not so satisfied was his Red Bull Racing Australia teammate and reigning champion Jamie Whincup, who, despite improving from 22nd to 10th, slipped back down to fifth on the series standings.

He’d briefly held third position on Saturday with a ninth and sixth placing.

“We struggled all weekend, there’s no doubt about that,” said Lowndes.

“Winton here this weekend was probably one of our worst (rounds). “But it was great to have a third after a tough weekend. We’ve got something to look at.”

With the series lead changing hands four times already this season, Lowndes is predicting a tight championship right through to the last round.

“There’s no breakaway at the moment and I think that will be the case all the way up to December,” he said.

Golden win for Warriors

By Michael Burgess The Warriors have won back to back matches for just the second time this season, with a thrilling 17-13 golden point win over the Eels.

Just like last week, there was incredible drama and Bodene Thompson is the latest Houdini hero for the Auckland club, scoring the winning try in the 85th minute.

Earlier the Warriors could have won the match in normal time but a late Parramatta field goal sent the match into the extra spell.

Thompson’s try was a monumental effort, as he forced his way through four defenders to ground the ball on the try line.

The video referees took an age to confirm the touchdown, which sealed the Warriors’ fifth win of the season.

It was a courageous effort by the visitors, who lost Ryan Hoffman (concussion) and Thomas Leuluai (knee) inside the first 20 minutes which forced the other forwards to play many more minutes than they would have anticipated.

The Warriors seemed to tire badly in the second half, as the Eels came back into the match in a big way.

Parramatta scored three unanswered tries in the second half, and only poor goal kicking from Luke Kelly (0/3) prevent-

ed them from taking the lead.

The Warriors led 12-0 at halftime but it probably should have been more.

The Eels, who had won just one of their last five matches, were down on confidence and it showed.

They were plagued by bad decisions and poor execution and completed at just 47 per cent in the first half.

Parramatta were trapped in goal, forced over the sideline, passed to the ‘invisible man’ with the try line beckoning and even came up with a top class ‘falcon’.

It wouldn’t have made for easy viewing for coach Brad Arthur, nor a certain Kieran Foran, who must be wondering what he is walking into next season, when coupled with the ongoing dramas at board level.

The Auckland club were good enough to capitalise.

They weren’t short of errors themselves, with Chad Townsend, Solomone Kata and Ken Maumalo all guilty of loose carries at crucial occasions in the first half.

But they got away with it and Shaun Johnson was the inspiration for some early magic.

He produced a lovely cut out ball to set Jonathan Wright free, then an improbable pick up at full pace from the winger’s clever kick.

But what about what hap-

pened next? Just like last week, Johnson stepped through a maze of defenders, like a grasshopper leaping between daisies.

It’s hard to think of a better side stepper in the history of

There was physical intent from the Warriors - the 105kg Semi Radradra being forced back into his in goal epitomised that - and clean execution, as Townsend came up with a wonderful cut out pass to allow Kata to power over for his eighth try of the season.

Unfortunately for the visitors, everything turned in the second half.

With just 15 available players, they were always going to tire but they didn’t help themselves.

Wright dropped a bomb on his try line to allow Anthony Watmough to dive over and begin Parramatta’s comeback.

Moments later newly installed centre Dominique Peyroux misread badly to allow Semi Radradra to score near the right sideline.

When Ryan Morgan scored the Eels third try in the 63rd minute the Warriors looked unlikely victors, but pure grit on defence followed by Thompson’s heroics saw them home.

Origin should not lose Smith - Daley By laine clark NSW coach Laurie Daley admits he’ll be disappointed if Queensland captain Cameron Smith misses this month’s State of Origin opener over an incident involving South Sydney hooker Issac Luke.

Smith may have some anxious moments before the Queensland side is named on Tuesday after his feet found contact with Luke’s head during a tackle in Melbourne’s 16-12 NRL win over Souths on Saturday night.

Pulled onto his back by Rabbitohs forward David Tyrrell, Smith’s feet made contact with Luke’s head several times as he kicked his legs to get himself free.

No penalty was called and Luke did not complain of any injury post-match.

Paul Gallen’s injury-enforced withdrawal from the NSW side means Cronulla team-mate Luke Lewis will be Laurie Daley’s most experienced option for this month’s State of Origin opener. Stylish win for Aaja Nachle Consistent sprinter Aaja Nachle turned around a disappointing effort at her last start with a powerful display at Te Rapa on the weekend as she set herself up for another profitable winter campaign.

The daughter of handy stakes performer Madhuri Dixit had finished a long last at Ellerslie in late April when making her first appearance from a summer break with trainer Frank Ritchie admitting he may have been a little soft on her leading into that race.

“She is a very gross mare and although I thought I had her in good shape for her resumption she probably was a little underdone,” he explained.

“She is also one of those horses that really packs it in when she gets headed so it may have looked a little worse than it really was.

“Funnily enough she does exactly the same thing at trackwork so it can be hard to get a line on her at times.”

Ritchie had given the mare plenty of work after the Ellerslie performance and was confident of a better showing on the weekend.

“She likes that Te Rapa track and I thought she would definitely be improved given the work she had had since Ellerslie,” he said.

“I sat down with Sam (Spratt) before the race and said to her to let her do her own thing early in the race as she has very good natural speed but likes to get things her own way and gives her best when you let her do that.

“Sam said she travelled well outside the speed and when she asked her in the straight she just bounded away from them.”

The victory was just the third of the mare’s fifteen race career to date, however a further six runner-up finishes has seen her rise to the top of the rating 85 grade with Ritchie admitting that it will add some complications to

her upcoming assignments.

“The obvious goal is to see where we can get her some black type some time this winter but there are not many opportunities during the next couple of months and with her rating we do have to be mindful of not putting her in a position where she is carrying the topweight all of the time,” he said.

SPICER, Dorothea Evelyn (Brownie, Dot) – Peacefully on May 15, 2015 at Rosebank, Ashburton, aged 90. Dearly loved wife of the late Stewart. Much loved mother and mother-inlaw of Graham and Raewyn (Riwaka); Jeff and Denise; Daphne and David Hinton; Tony and Lynda. Proud “Nanny Brownie” of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mid Canterbury’s junior netballers have suffered their last cold morning.

The senior grades and fun ferns have all started playing inside the new EA Networks

Centre, but the juniors were subjected to one last morning braving the elements on Saturday.

Mid Canterbury netball president, Karla Newlands, said that the junior committee wanted to complete the three rounds of

grading outdoors to avoid the change in venue having any effect on the grading process and so that they could have a trial run of how the junior competition will operate when it does move indoors.

“It gave everyone the chance

to iron out any issues and have a trial run of the new schedule and timing.

Instead of nine courts they will now have four - elongating the day - but they now operate under 50-minute time slots rather than an hour.

The trial was rated a success, but with the chilly conditions that were prevailing on Saturday, they will all be glad to say goodbye to the outdoor courts as they start the new season in the new home of netball this Saturday.
