Mid Canterbury event organisers are in pandemic planning mode as they determine whether or not to go ahead with gatherings.

Members of the Wheels Week Plus committee will meet for an emergency meeting on Monday to determine what their next steps are with the May event following the announcement.

And Anzac Day services in New Zealand could be cancelled next month due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Gatherings of 500 or more people held both out and indoors were advised to be cancelled by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Monday.

The Returned Services’ Association (RSA) board told media it would hold an urgent meeting today at 1pm to discuss what options they had going forward.

National president BJ Clark said the RSA needed to consider the demographic it had in the organisation and that would be attending Anzac Day parades.

“It’s our responsibility to remember and acknowledge those that have served, but also to ensure our members and the public are kept safe,” Clark said.

“We not only need to decide what we are going to do but in the event of whatever decision we make, what our backup plans are.”

Meanwhile, there are new casualties following the Methven A&P Show, which has been cancelled. A Ben Hurley comedy tour, which was coming to the Methven Blue Pub this Friday, has now been postponed to a future date, and the Mid Canterbury Choir’s biennial Messiah performance next month, has been postponed to either November, or April next year.

“The choir met last evening and made a unanimous decision that this was best,” Mid Canterbury Choir manager Carol Gunn said yesterday.

It was to keep not only members and fellow performers safe, but also audience members, even though the gathering would be less than 500 people.

Three new cases confirmed - $12m rescue plan – P10

Schools and council facilities remain open, for now

By Guardian Reporters Mid Canterbury schools and Ashburton District Council facilities remain open as they take guidance from central government.

Council CEO Hamish Riach said yesterday that in the absence of any cases of Covid-19 community infection and no advice from the Ministry of Health that facilities should close, they remained open.

“This could change in the future, but for now we have left them open,” Riach said.

Facilities included the Ashburton Public Library, EA Networks Centre, Ashburton Museum, council offices and public conveniences.

The council had increased its cleaning regime and added signage asking people who may feel unwell to stay away.

Riach said the Ministry of Health remained the authority on the pandemic, and he urged anyone needing information to check health.govt.nz/covid-19 The council had set up an internal Pandemic Planning Group, meeting daily to keep abreast of developments and respond.

The council was refreshing its business continuity plans to ensure it could keep critical council services open.

“We are continuing to monitor the rapidly changing Covid-19 pandemic from both a community perspective and an organisational perspective,” Riach said.

Meanwhile, the district’s larger schools are cancelling assemblies and gatherings, and examining how their students might be able to learn from home if they had to.

St Joseph’s School principal Cath Blacklow said in a letter to parents that the school would be guided by the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health in regards to possible closure.

“At this stage closure is not expected, however the possibility of this could change easily over the next few weeks.”

Mount Hutt College principal Jack Saxon said yesterday’s school assembly was cancelled, and the college was awaiting guidelines

from the Ministry of Education this week on what school events could continue. The Government announcement on cancelling events with 500-or-more people was not inclusive of a school setting. Many of the country’s secondary schools had more than 500 pupils.

The school would be giving consideration to the continuation of events over the next two terms, and this included the school ball in May. “It’s about waiting for the guidelines. It will help inform the decisions we make,” Saxon said.

The school had already taken a $100,000 hit due to Covid-19,

including the loss of international students and decreased event advertising in its Snowfed newspaper.

Ashburton College has ceased holding gatherings in the school’s auditorium, with a capacity of 350-plus.

Principal Ross Preece said the call was made prior to the Government announcement on Monday afternoon as a precautionary measure.

“We’re doing what we can and trying to stay as informed as we can,” Preece said.

“Equally we’re doing our best to keep our staff, students and their families as informed as is possible

On advice from both the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education, Preece said work had begun to prepare for the possibility of school closure at some point.

While not a definite, it was better to be prepared and have systems in place should it be enforced.

“We have the capacity in which to make it work, it comes with the odd fish hook, but I’m reasonably confident that we could make it happen if we need to.”

A number of school trips scheduled for later this week would still go ahead.

Day trips, not involving overnight stays, for both geography and history are at this stage still set to take place, but a student leadership conference in Christchurch run by World Vision, which would have seen around 16 students attending, won’t have an Ashburton College presence.

“We’ve made the decision to cancel that particular event and continue to monitor other scheduled trips and will make decisions on those as things develop over the coming days.”

Preece said he would be in Christchurch later this week for a meeting of Canterbury and West Coast Principals in which the agenda had been abandoned and instead would focus on information received from both the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education.

Dental practices at risk of closure

By Guardian Reporters Ashburton dental practices could limit appointments to emergency treatment if the Covid-19 pandemic takes off in Mid Canterbury.

And in the case of running out of face masks, they will have to close completely.

Ashburton Dental Centre dentist Justin Wall said the priority in pandemic guidelines was minimising unnecessary contact, leading to the scenario of practices offering essential treatment only.

It would be important to avoid procedures which involved the creation of an infectious aerosol, which could happen when working on a patient who was carrying the coronavirus.

“That means non-essential dentistry will have to be put on the backburner,” he said.

This had happened in Ontario, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In the Canadian province, the Royal College of Dental Surgeons has recommended all non-essential and elective dental services should be suspended immediately, but emergency treatment should continue.

“That’s not the case here at the moment but it could change very quickly,” Wall said.

The other aspect was that dentists could not operate without being masked.

“Every man and his dog has swallowed up New Zealand’s supply of masks,” Wall said.

He was pleased to report that Ashburton Dental Centre was well stocked with its supply of masks, meaning they had enough to last at least several months.

New Zealand companies which supplied them to dentists only had enough supplies for about two weeks, as stock from China had paused following production lines affected in the pandemic.

Mt Hutt optimistic in face of pandemic NZSki is planning on opening its three ski areas including Mt Hutt as scheduled this winter.

In Europe and America some ski resorts have temporarily closed to stop Covid-19 spread.

Mt Hutt is due to open June 5, the Remarkables June 6 and Coronet Peak June 13.

NZSki CEO Paul Anderson said the company’s concerns at the moment were around seasonal staff who were currently overseas.

“With the current travel restrictions and advisories, and with airlines reducing international services, their journeys to New Zealand in time for winter may be disrupted or delayed,” Anderson said.

“Our team is following this closely and working on contingencies.

“When staff do make it to New Zealand, we are working on plans to assist them should they need it while self-isolating.

Local restaurants are stepping up cleaning practices and even introducing home delivery services with the threat of Covid-19 looming.

The team at the Phat Duck will start home deliveries next Monday in a move to give people more food options if they were in self-isolation, or do not feel like visiting public places.

“We have been talking about giving it a go for a while and this seemed like a good time,” owner-operator Skip Joyce said.

“We don’t think it will be huge but it will be there if people don’t want to go out in public.”

Joyce said they had also stepped up cleaning procedures around the business to ensure they do the best to keep their customers safe.

Longstanding dryland sheep farm changes hands

After almost 120 years, the Chisnall family will no longer farm on Chisnalls Road, near Hinds.

One of the last dryland, sheep-only farms remaining on the Mid Canterbury plains, the property has been sold, with fourth-generation farmer Ross Chisnall moving to Ashburton.

Chisnall said he was pleased the 360-hectare Eskdale Farm had been bought by another dryland sheep farmer, who will farm halfbred sheep.

“Thirty-six years ago, the new owner sheared for us for a season.

“When the farm was put on the market, I was told that the most likely scenario was that it would be broken up, but it has remained intact and as a dryland farm.

“The potential buyers ranged from dairy farmers to dryland farmers. I was surprised by the number of dryland farmers that came.”

Chisnall said he was aware that if the property had been sold a few years earlier during the dairy boom it would have been redeveloped.

“I am able to leave the place knowing it

will continue as a sheep farm and a lot of the infrastructure such as shelterbelts will largely remain intact.”

The new owner had acquired Chisnall’s corriedale flock of 1800 mixed age ewes as part of the sale.

While the settlement date was February 14, Chisnall was able to stay on the farm until he purchased a house in Ashburton.

The Chisnall family has owned the farm, on the outskirts of Hinds, since 1901 when it was purchased by his great grandfather William Chisnall.

Their postal address was PO Box 1, Hinds, as Chisnall’s grandfather, Colin Chisnall had initiated the first telephone exchange and local electricity network.

“He was involved in the community in just about everything.”

While Colin Chisnall had corriedale and merino studs, these were discontinued by Chisnall’s father, Des Chisnall, who farmed a commercial corriedale flock, breeding replacements when he took over in 1956.

Ross Chisnall started back on the farm after finishing school in 1982 and took over the farm in 1992, continuing to farm corriedales.

Fourth-generation Hinds farmer Ross Chisnall says corriedale sheep suited the dryland farm, which has been sold after almost 120 years in the family.

“I didn’t put the rams out in 2015, as the farm was so short of feed and the following year it was not much better.”

His brother Brett Chisnall, who had been working on the farm part-time died in 2016, with their mother Christina Chisnall having a stroke a few weeks later.

“My mother cooked for the shearers until the age of 82 and my father was still working in the shearing shed until the age of 87, when I realised he was at risk of being knocked over by the sheep.”

Once his parents were too unwell to be on the farm, Chisnall started to consider selling.

With changing land use and sheep disappearing from the plains, this meant that infrastructure such as the Tinwald saleyards was shutting down.

Finding people to help with lambing was not easy and he was no longer able to get the shearers at the optimal time.

“I like to shear the ewe hoggets at the end of September and the ewes in early October. However, now shearing is mid-November, six weeks later.”

While he has not lambed since 2014, he received income from the corriedales’ mid micron wool, which was worth significantly more than crossbred wool, as well as from selling surplus feed.

He was never interested in developing irrigation, as this would have meant a change in farm management and the breed of sheep, as corriedale sheep suited dryland farming.

Chisnall said that as a single man with no family and big changes in land use around him, he knew the writing was on the wall, but had waited a few years before putting the farm on the market.

Jandal thrower sentenced A man who chose to discipline his child by throwing a leather jandal at her head has been sentenced to 12 months’ supervision and to carry out violence and parenting courses.

Ere Tairea appeared before Judge Stephen O’Driscoll in the Ashburton District Court on Monday for sentencing after pleading guilty to the charge of assaulting a child under the age of 14 with a weapon earlier this year.

The court heard that Tairea threw a jandal at his daughter after he found her in the hallway of the property holding a knife which she was not allowed to do.

He grabbed a jandal and threw it at her, striking her face causing her to drop the knife and start crying.

The jandal left the victim with bruising and welts on the left side of her face.

Tairea returned the knife to the kitchen and returned to the hallway to find the victim still crying, so placed her in her room.

His two children have been in the care of his brother, and he is working with Oranga Tamariki about having them returned to his custody.

Dairy worker Vincent Michael Reynolds will have to complete 125 hours of community work after being sentenced for a third or subsequent drink driving charge on Monday.

A blood test show 91mg of alcohol per litre of blood, the legal limit is 80.

Judge O’Driscoll said it was a shame Reynolds was appearing again as his last offending had been in 2013 and he urged him not to drink drive again.

He ordered him to complete 125 hours of community work, disqualified him from driving for 12 months and one day and ordered him to pay reparation of $249.69 to cover the cost of the blood test.

Judge O’Driscoll imposed a 12 month sentence of supervision and ordered him to complete any parenting and family violence courses that were directed by his probation officer.

“Your role is to comfort and nurture your children, ensure you do not do the same again,” he said.

A number of drivers appeared before Judge O’Driscoll charged

with a third or subsequent drink driving charge.

Michael Ryan Strawford pleaded guilty to his fourth charge of drink driving after being stopped by police on Bridge Street on February 10 this year.

He returned a breath alcohol sample of 812mcg (the limit is 250mcg).

He entered a guilty plea and was was remanded on bail for sentencing on March 30.

COVID-19 Coronavirus

Clifford James Duckmanton entered a guilty plea to one charge of drink driving third or subsequent and was remanded on bail for sentencing.

A man who received a gazebo stolen from a school has been sentenced to 100 hours’ community work and 12 months’ supervision.

Blake Moore appeared before

Judge O’Driscoll having been convicted of receiving stolen property.

After conducting a search warrant at Moore’s address, police located the stolen gazebo, which Moore was going to sell on behalf of the unknown person who stole it.

This was his second offence for receiving stolen goods.

Judge O’Driscoll sentenced him to 100 hours’ community work, remitted his fines and replaced them with 75 hours of community work, bringing it to a total of 175 hours and 12 months supervision.

Ricki Anthony Joseph McQueen was sentenced to 40 hours of community work on one charge of wilful damage.

He was under sentence at the time of the offending, and Judge O’Driscoll urged him to not offend again while under sentence.

Warrants to arrest were issued for Cody Stuart Te Poono, Nicole Mary Favel, Roland Edwards, Ofisa Tautala Tavete and Benjamin William Wederell.

Monster garage sale success

The Ashburton Pakeke Lions coffers have received a great boost thanks to one of their most successful monster garage sales.

Held over two separate days at the Ashburton Racecourse, items ranging from furniture to sports equipment and dolls were available.

Immediate past president Ron Patterson said the sale had been a big success once again, with the main sale on February 29 attracting big crowds and the clearance sale on March 6 helping to clear out more items.

The total raised from the event minus the expenses of running the event worked out to around $15,000.

“It was a lot slower than the previous year but we did $3000 for the Friday,” he said.

“The whole sale was highly successful.”

All left over furniture from the event was taken away by Envirowaste to be sold at their second-hand store and other items will go into storage for next year’s events, or high value items will be sold on Trade Me. “We are really grateful for the support from the community, after 20 years it has become a

A tourist who arrived in New Zealand on Monday is being deported after officials found she had no clear plans to self-isolate amid escalating coronavirus fears. The woman checked in to Rucksacker backpackers hostel in Christchurch on Monday night wearing a face mask. She did not show any flu symptoms nor had she mixed with other hostel residents, it’s understood. But yesterday morning, Ministry of Health officials arrived at the hostel to question the woman about her self-isolation plans, before police officers showed up to take her away. But it seems that there’s a line drawn when it comes to the cases of a global pandemic and a response from government to try and help a country handle an evolving situation.

Barely minutes after Grant Robertson announced the Government’s $12.1 billion Covid-19 spending package, Bridges – in his usually flamboyant fashion – was on the attack and somehow turned a very serious situation for a lot of business owners and employers across New Zealand into a points scoring mission – po-

tentially one which has backfired on him.

Yes, it’s election year and yes it’s good to have opposing views, but when the majority of the country sits on tenterhooks, waiting to hear where this pandemic has hit next, using the opportunity to try and rack up a few more votes by being the protagonist was probably not the right approach.

What New Zealand needs is a

unified and close-knit group of leaders who are willing to push aside political preference and the wars of words that are usually emitted from the Beehive and work as a collective with the common goal of ensuring that there’s options available for all New Zealanders in these trying times.

Had Bridges come out before the announcement and stated his expectations and thoughts around what should be happening, then perhaps this discussion wouldn’t be had but the way it came across and the way it’s been received might not serve well in the future months.

Don’t get me wrong, Bridges is entitled to his opinion – and usually he makes no issue with mak-

ing it heard despite what many people seem to think about his approach to politics, but often it’s sometimes better to say nothing at all than to go on the attack.

Out and about yesterday, it was quite clear to see that this district is starting to feel the impact of Covid-19 and what it might mean for the next few months.

Major events are being cancelled almost as quickly as they can be announced and the ripple effect from those is going to be felt for months.

Contract workers, employed for the sole purpose of playing their role in some of these major events, are going to be the ones who suffer the most and will be welcoming yesterday’s govern-

ment announcements.

Sport locally could be in for a big hit too and the number of sports postponing or even cancelling seasons or tournaments is a fast-moving situation and just like netball did yesterday, it seems only a matter of time before others like rugby and football probably follow suit.

No-one wants these things to happen, but then again no one wants to see this pandemic grow in our district, so the decisions being made are being made with everyone’s best interests at heart.

And despite what various politicians might suggest to us, this current situation is so much bigger than who might win an election later this year.

Council’s Covid-19 response A

s the impacts of coronavirus Covid-19 continue to unfold each day, we are all assessing our own situations and thinking about what we need to do to best prepare and protect ourselves and the wider community.

You’ll have seen that there are now bright posters at the entrances of the EA Networks Centre, museum, library and council buildings asking anyone who is feeling unwell to please return home and to contact their GP or Healthline for advice.

We have introduced these and other sensible precautions based on the advice coming from New Zealand’s lead agency on the Covid-19 response, the Ministry of Health (MoH).

As not only a public service and facility provider, but also a local employer, the council has a responsibility to do all we can

to protect the welfare of our residents and staff.

It is a responsibly other organisations and businesses are actively assessing as well.

We have reinforced sanitiser messages to our staff to regularly wash or clean their hands, are advising our teams to reduce hand-to-hand contact with others and to stay at home if they are feeling unwell. We have also increased our cleaning and sanitising activities at all our facilities.

Advice from the MoH experts is that washing our hands thor-

oughly, avoiding touching our faces, sneezing and coughing into tissues or our elbow, and staying at home if we are experiencing possible symptoms, are all practical and effective measures to help protect ourselves and our community.

These are measures we should all adopt in our efforts to be responsible and reduce the spread of the virus.

From a council perspective, we are refreshing our business continuity plans to ensure we can keep critical council services open and can support staff to work from home where possible, and have set up an internal pandemic planning group which is meeting daily to keep abreast of developments and respond accordingly.

Additionally, we are working with industry leaders who are working on behalf of all local authorities to co-ordinate

advice on a vast array of issues confronting councils and their services for communities.

The MoH remains the single source of truth on coronavirus Covid-19, and I urge everyone in our community to check their website (health.govt.nz/ COVID-19) for information.

Pandemic sees common sense in short supply

W

hat we so often see in difficult times is common sense suspended.

Panic buying, people inexplicably continuing to take cruises, symptomatic people jumping on flights and then visiting cafes.

In all of this, we’re relying on people to have some shred of decency and common sense.

Sadly that was not the case with the Australian dance teacher who, despite being tested for coronavirus, hopped on a plane to Wellington. Then visited the Milk Crate Cafe which has elected to shut its doors for now. This is despite health officials assuring them the risk of any spread is low, but the cafe doesn’t want to take that risk.

We need more forward thinking decent people making de-

cisions like that at the moment, even though that decision is costing them.

They’re citing a duty of care to their customers and staff and want to take precautions.

I would’ve thought erring on the side of caution is prudent right now. The cafe says it’ll reopen when it believes it’s safe to do so.

Which is all in stark contrast to the guy who decided he’d hop on the flight in the first place and potentially risk everyone else’s health, having had a test for coronavirus and not knowing the result.

Which is why I’m glad to see Monday’s crackdown announcement from the Ministry of Health on self-isolaters.

“Travellers who can’t convince border officials they have adequate arrangements for self-isolation could be sent home,”

according to Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield.

The approach now, is that airport arrivals will be questioned before they reach the immigration desk, to make sure they have self-isolation arrangements. How do they ensure this?

Well travellers have to convince officials – I’m not sure how that works, but you have to have a convincing story and they have to believe it. If they don’t believe it, authorities will send you back to the country you came from.

So that should give us all hope, given self-isolation seems to be our one-stop-shop approach to this thing.

And then late Monday afternoon, the announcement that all events with more than 500 people should be cancelled.

Should. Are we relying on common sense again here?

What about “must”?

It excludes schools and university events by the way. Which is crazy.

There are 490 schools with 500 students, 120 schools have more than 1000 students.

But they’re staying open. Not only should that advice apply to schools and universities, but those institutions should be closed.

It’s a no-brainer when we look at the worldwide effectiveness and importance of social distancing.

Three new virus cases confirmed RNZ There are three new cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus in New Zealand, Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield has confirmed.

Dr Bloomfield has provided the latest update on the Ministry of Health’s response to Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak in New Zealand.

Dr Bloomfield said all three new cases were people who had returned from international travel.

There have now been 11 confirmed and two probable cases in this country.

Two of the new cases are in Wellington and one is in Dunedin.

The man in Dunedin is in his 40s and began to show symptoms five days after returning from Germany. Two of his family members, who have Covid-19 symptoms, are in self-isolation.

Dr Bloomfield said the Dunedin man’s son goes to Logan Park school in the city and has symptoms. If he tests positive, the Ministry of Health is recommending the school closes for 48 hours and is carefully cleaned.

The Wellington cases were a man in his 30s and his father in his 70s who had recently returned

from the United States and neither of them require hospital care.

They came to Auckland from Los Angeles on Saturday on American Airlines flight AA83. They then travelled to Wellington on Air NZ flight NZ419 that same day.

Dr Bloomfield said there were about 500 Covid-19 tests being conducted yesterday around the country.

He said a traveller who arrived in Christchurch on Monday was unwilling to self-isolate, so plans were being made to deport that person.

Dr Bloomfield said the Health Ministry had been expecting more sporadic cases.

“We expect more travellers returning to New Zealand to present with symptoms of Covid-19 and they will be tested.”

He said the rule for 14 days of compulsory self-isolation for those returning to New Zealand would help reduce transmission of the virus.

Dr Bloomfield said New Zealand had no barrier for testing in terms of cost, nor was there any constraint on capacity.

However, it was important to ensure the right people were tested, he said.

Employers must be able show or forecast at least a 30 per cent drop in revenue in any one month between January and June this year compared to the same month the previous year to qualify for the wage subsidies announced in yesterday’s Covid-19 economic package.

The ‘first phase’ announcements will run for a limited time of six months, through to June 30, although the government is promising a ‘phase two’ response in the May 14 Budget, which may include either an extension or expansion of the scheme.

Wage subsidies Key elements of the wage subsidy package are a lump sum payment covering 12 weeks at the following rates: $585.80 per week in pre-tax support for full-time

employees, or $7029,60; $350 per week for part-time

employees (under 20 hours),

Workers taking sick leave before

March 17 can only access the payments for sick leave taken from that date, and anyone who travels offshore after March 16 will not be eligible.

The estimated total cost, based on uptake by 27,000 workers every two weeks for the next eight weeks, is $126.5 million and could be substantially higher or lower than that, depending on the progress of the illness in New Zealand.

“The payment does not affect any paid leave entitlements that are owed and is available even if the an employee is on paid leave for part of the period,” explanatory notes to the package say.

“It is not available to those who can work from home during the period of self-isolation and who can be paid normally by their employer.”

What if schools close?

Finance Minister Grant Robertson indicated that the sick leave assistance package could become available in some form if the government were to move to school closures, where a worker might have to stay home to look after children who have effectively been placed in self-isolation by government edict.

However, the government has yet to consider decisions as no school closure policy has yet been announced.

“That is not part of our thinking, but we would re-look at the scheme” in such circumstances, said Robertson, who took care to ensure that any such support would be undertaken under the sick leave rather than wage subsidy package.

Earlier yesterday afternoon, the government unveiled a $12.1 billion package to combat the effects of the coronavirus.

It will include a $500 million fund for health, which includes extra intensive care capacity and equipment for hospitals, support for GPs and primary care and improving video conferencing and telehealth consultations.

The funding will also nearly double resources for Public Health Units to increase the ability to contact trace the virus.

Healthline will also receive a $20 million boost for more staff.

Tax changes to support business owners

Buying laptops, microphones, cameras and other equipment needed to facilitate remote working by teams that have to work from home will be made cheaper under new temporary depreciation rules announced yesterday, applying from April 1.

Tax system changes for business taxpayers are in four key areas: higher thresholds for provisional tax obligations; axing penalties on some late tax payments; resuming depreciation on commercial and industrial buildings; and immediate deduction for low value assets.

In order by estimated impact on tax revenue, the detail of these elements include: Commercial and Industrial Building Depreciation Worth an estimated $2.1 billion, this will reintroduce 2 per cent diminishing value depreciation on new and existing commercial buildings, including hotels and motels.

All sectors are eligible, the change is permanent and is intended to encourage investment in business premises and decrease the cost of such premises over time. The measures appear likely to be of particular assistance to the tourism sector, which is very hard-hit by Covid-19 travel restrictions.

Immediate deductions for low-value assets Worth an estimated $667 million, business assets worth less than $5000 can be depreciated

fully in the year of purchase rather than over several years. The current asset value threshold for immediate full write-down is $500.

The $5000 threshold is temporary and will apply in the 2020-21 tax year, reducing to a new higher threshold of $1000 thereafter.

As well as reducing compliance costs, it is likely to stimulate the purchase of business equipment.

New provisional tax thresholds Valued at an estimated $350 million in cashflow benefits to businesses in 2020/21, small businesses will not have to pay provisional tax unless they owe more than $5000, doubling the current $2500 threshold.

Businesses that would have been paying provisional tax in the 2020-21 tax year will now be able to pay their tax on February 7, 2022.

Some late payment penalties written off To apply on all tax payments due on or after February 14, 2020, the Commissioner of Inland Revenue will have discretion to waive late payment interest penalty payments for taxpayers “significantly adversely affected by Covid-19”.

Aviation industry welcomes support

E tu assistant national secretary Rachel Mackintosh says that the announcement is a strong start and will help some workers deal with the stress that Covid-19 (coronavirus) is causing in their work lives and beyond.

“We eagerly anticipate the details of the package that will relate to certain E tu members, such as the over 5000 at Air New Zealand.

We urge Air New Zealand and other aviation employers to come to the party, as the Government has done,’’ she said.

“We particularly welcome the aspects of the package that support all working people, whether they are employees, contractors, or casual workers.”

However, she said that many E tu members would need further assurance that they will be looked after.

“The $100 million allocated for assisting with redeployment will be crucial for our members who are already facing redundancies.

Redeployment needs to happen effectively, which means consultation with workers, unions, iwi, and the wider community.’’

Briscoe Group managing director Rod Duke doesn’t expect to announce job losses in what he anticipates will be a difficult year for retailers.

Duke said the retailer’s strong balance sheet – $67.4 million in cash – will help it ride out the impact of the global pandemic that could drive up costs as staff take sick leave.

“We can withstand a bit more pressure and uncertainty than many other retailers can,” he told media.

Despite business confidence falling and banks starting to predict a recession, Duke doesn’t see job losses as being likely.

“I think if it were going to turn out to be a real disaster, I would’ve seen some early signs and March trading has actually been quite good,” he said.

Briscoe employs more than 2000 staff across its Briscoe and Living & Giving homeware chains and Rebel Sports sporting goods network.

In response to the growing economic uncertainty surrounding

Covid-19, Duke suspended his salary – which was $978,000 in the 2018 year – until the end of July.

The senior management team also agreed to freeze their salary increases for the same period.

“I think my staff are going to go through some anguish and worry,” he said.

“There is no question it is going to be difficult, so this was just a relatively small thing that I could do.”

“We continue to monitor the situation closely, taking steps to help protect our team and customers and to mitigate interruption to our business.”

Duke said the worst interruptions to the retailer’s supply chain had likely passed with more than half the group’s factories now running at full capacity, and the rest operating around 70 per cent.

“Right now, our supply chain is running about two to four weeks behind out of China,” he said.

“The information we’ve received from the factories themselves is that capacity is actually building not slowing.”

The company’s concerns are now shifting towards consumer demand if a recession takes hold.

In February, the company reported its first quarterly sales decline for the Briscoes-branded chain since the wake of the Christchurch earthquakes.

Duke said it was too hard to get a read on how bad the downturn could be for retail because March had been a better month than February.

“There is certainly a little bit of panic in the suburbs, not just here but all over the world.”

The company said that it was not underestimating the challenge posed by the outbreak and border control measures.

“It is a complex outlook, but we feel that we are as well placed as any retailer to respond to our customers’ ongoing and changing needs.”

Briscoe lifted annual revenue 3.4 per cent to $653 million. Net profit excluding the impact of accounting changes increased 2.5 per cent to $65 million.

Slight rise in dollar after package announcement

The New Zealand dollar shot up more than half a US cent after the government announced a $12.1 billion rescue package for firms and employees hit by the coronavirus crisis.

The Kiwi jumped as high as 60.96 US cents from 60.41 just before the announcement and had recently settled at 60.75.

“I think the size is bigger than what we had expected and the fact that it’s just the start” are the imme-

diate positives, said Jarrod Kerr, chief economist at Kiwibank.

The government will pump $12.1 billion into the economy to soften the impact of Covid-19, the global pandemic that threatens to tip the world into a protracted recession.

The package is the equivalent of 4 per cent of the economy, and is a mix of wage subsidies, tax breaks, increased welfare support, and targeted spending in health and aviation, outstripping similar programmes in Australia, the UK and the US. BusinessNZ chief executive Kirk

He said the wage support and tax measures were well-focused on key areas of need.

The Council of Trade Unions president Richard Wagstaff also welcomed the package as “a first stage to support New Zealand working people and our economy” which “provides an immediate boost to get through these challenging times”.

Justin Tighe-Umbers, executive director of the Board of Airline Representatives New Zealand (BARNZ), says the package will be a lifeline, but over coming months more will be needed. The package aims to protect supply chains, and help with the repatriation of New Zealanders now that many airlines are cutting services.

E tu, the union representing 8000 aviation workers, has also welcomed the package.

But one of the big victims of the coronavirus crisis is not covered by the package.

Air New Zealand – facing a massive blow to revenue and forced to layoff up to a third of its staff – is excluded from the package.

Finance Minister Grant Robertson said he is still in talks with Air New Zealand.

Analysts expect the Government – which owns 52 per cent of the airline – will be called on to underwrite a capital injection.

Simply versatile mince Don’t underestimate a packet of mince. It might appear a humble ingredient, but if you buy good quality lamb, beef or pork then you’ll get plenty of highly nutritious meat without the other bits that pad out a cheaper product.

Mince is the ultimate meat when it comes to versatility and can happily be used with other ingredients for a top class meal as much as it can for a humble family dinner.

Stir-fry pork and noodles

Cheesy mince in a pan 1T olive oil 1/2 onion (chopped) 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 500g beef mince 400m tin of chopped tomatoes 1/4 C tomato paste 1 1/2 C beef stock 1T dried mixed herbs 1T worcestershire sauce 2C dried penne pasta 1/2 C grated mozzarella cheese (or any other cheese) ■■ You will need a large frying pan with a lid for this recipe.

■■ Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat.

■■ Add the onion and garlic and cook for 2 minutes until fragrant.

■■ Add the beef mince beef and brown (about 5 minutes).

■■ Add tomatoes, tomato paste, beef stock, mixed herbs and worcestershire sauce and stir to combine.

■■ Reduce heat to medium/low, add the pasta and stir to combine.

■■ Cover and allow to cook for 15 minutes, stirring once during cooking.

■■ Sprinkle the cheese on top and cover again for a further 2 minutes until the cheese has melted.

■■ Take the pan off the heat and serve immediately!

200g Pad Thai noodles 2T sesame oil 2T vegetable oil 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 piece ginger, 3cm, peeled, thinly sliced 500g pork mince 250g button mushrooms 1 red capsicum, cored, deseeded, thinly sliced 4T soy sauce 3 baby bok choy, leaves detached from base, washed, sliced 2cm 2 spring onions, thinly sliced 4T hoisin sauce

Easy meatloaf 750g beef mince 1 egg, lightly whisked 1 onion, finely chopped 2T fresh thyme 1C rolled oats 2T horseradish sauce ■■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■■ Put the mince in a bowl with the onion thyme, oats, horseradish sauce, salt and pepper and mix well.

■■ Press mixture into a buttered 1kg loaf tin and place this in a deep roasting dish.

■■ Pour boiling water into the roasting dish, to come half way up the loaf tin.

■■ Bake for 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hours, or until juices are clear when the loaf is pierced with a skewer.

■■ When the loaf is cooked, remove the loaf tin from the roasting dish and leave for about 10 minutes.

■■ Tip out any excess juices and turn the loaf out onto a plate.

■■ Slice and serve with gravy and mash

■■ Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil and add the noodles.

■■ Boil 4 minutes or until tender to the bite, cool under cold water.

■■ Drain well and place in a bowl.

■■ Add the sesame oil and toss gently. Reserve.

■■ Heat a wok or frying pan over high heat.

■■ Add the vegetable oil, garlic, ginger and pork.

■■ Stir-fry 3-4 minutes, breaking up the lumps of pork.

■■ Add the mushrooms and capsicum and stir-fry 3 minutes.

■■ Add the soy sauce, bok choy, spring onions and hoisin sauce.

■■ Stir-fry a further 2-3 minutes until the bok choy is wilted.

■■ Add the noodles and gently toss so as not to break the noodles.

■■ Stir-fry another minute until hot.

Moroccan meatballs 1 onion, very finely chopped 2T chopped parsley 2T coriander, chopped 1t ground cumin 1/2 t cayenne 1 t ground cinnamon 1 t salt 525g lamb mince Sauce 2T olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 t ground cumin 1 t ground cinnamon 1/4 t cayenne 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes 1C chicken stock Meatballs ■■ Mix all meatball ingredients together and leave for 2 hours.

■■ Roll the meatball mix into small 2cm balls and bake in a 200°C oven until browned all over.

■■ Add the meatballs to the sauce and bring to the boil.

■■ Serve on a bed of couscous with a generous sprinkling of chopped parsley, coriander and mint.

Sauce ■■ Heat oil and fry onion gently for 5 minutes without letting it colour.

■■ Add the garlic and spices, stir to combine.

■■ Add tomatoes and chicken stock and bring to the boil.

■■ Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes until sauce has thickened.

Easy savoury mince 500g beef mince 2t oil 1 small onion, chopped 1 medium carrot, diced 1 small wedge cabbage, chopped 1/2 C corn kernels 1/2 C frozen peas 1T soy sauce 2T oyster sauce 3/4 C water or beef stock 2t cornflour 100g pkt pre-cooked crunchy noodles (optional) Steamed rice to serve ■■ Place beef mince in a bowl and mix in 1 teaspoon oil.

■■ Heat a large frypan or a wok until hot.

■■ Crumble in half the mince and cook, stirring often, until the mince begins to brown.

■■ Remove the first batch, reheat the frypan and cook the remaining mince, and then remove.

■■ Reheat the frypan, add the rest of the oil, add the onion and carrot.

■■ Cook, stirring once or twice, for 1 minute.

■■ Add the cabbage and cook for a further minute.

■■ Add the corn and peas to the frypan.

■■ Return the mince to the frypan, cook for 1 minute.

■■ Push the mince mixture out to the side.

■■ Pour in the combined soy sauce, oyster sauce, water and cornflour.

■■ Stir as it comes to the boil.

■■ Stir to mix the sauce with the mince mixture.

■■ Add the noodles if using, stir to combine.

■■ Spoon the mince into a serving bowl. Serve with steamed rice.

Chocolate slice with almonds and pistachio nuts 3/4 C chocolate melts 1T cocoa 200g chocolate Krispie biscuits, roughly chopped 1/2 C shredded coconut 3/4 C raisins 70g pistachio nuts, toasted 70g whole blanched almonds, toasted 3/4 can condensed milk 100g butter Icing (optional) 75g dark chocolate bits 3T cream 1t butter, softened

bowl and microwave for 40 seconds.

■■ Add the butter and stir until it has melted and the mixture is combined.

■■ Lift the slice from the tin and spread the icing (if you want it) on top of the slice. Leave to set.

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS They’re used to getting big crowds out to enjoy a grass track race meeting underneath the mountains, but next week attendees of the Methven Trotting Club’s meeting will be asked to stay at home.

Following on from the Government announcement cancelling public gatherings with more than 500 people, the three codes of racing in New Zealand announced yesterday that from today all race meetings across the country will be closed meetings.

That means that the only people permitted to attend meetings will be those jockeys and drivers competing at the meeting, trainers with runners engaged at the meeting, stable/kennel staff of those trainers as advised to the club and essential race day personnel.

The protocols in place are effective from today and at this stage are expected to remain in place until the middle of April.

With their final meeting of the season next Sunday, the Methven Trotting Club will paint a barren affair with decent crowd numbers, usually well in excess of 500 people, at most of their race meetings.

However acting in a responsible fashion was paramount according to Harness Racing New Zealand boss, Peter Jensen.

“The codes recognise that we need to act in a socially responsible manner, while at the same time protecting the ability of our stakeholders to continue to earn a living,” he said.

While crowds won’t be allowed to come on course to enjoy race meetings, the TAB will continue to broadcast meetings on Trackside’s two channels and also on www.tab. co.nz, however it will limit its operations on courses to include minimum broadcast operations and no on-course bookmakers or tote services provided.

In addition to limiting personnel on-course New Zealand thoroughbred racing, with the support of the NZ Jockeys’ Association, has issued a directive that jockeys must not accept riding engagements between islands without prior approval from the governing body.

From Friday, March 20, they will also increase all weight allocations by two kilograms to protect jockey health.

Warriors ‘just like going on tour’ New Zealand Warriors owner Mark Robinson has outlined the series of massive obstacles the club is willing to manoeuvre around to keep the team competing in the NRL, despite the current global pandemic.

While the club had previously commited to remain in Australia for round two of the competition, Robinson has now said that period outside of New Zealand is looking much longer and will involve a complicated array of player management policies.

“Going forward they are happy to play as long as the competition is running.

“The boys are pretty happy to stay.

“We will do everything we have to do to honour our agreement with the NRL,” Robinson told the Sydney Morning Herald in his first interview since the Covid-19 crisis reached a new level in Australasia over the weekend.

“I think we just do it.

“It’s like going on a six-week rugby league tour to England.”

The Warriors squad is currently based in a resort in Kingscliff on the north coast of New South Wales where they are preparing for round two, minus backline duo Peta Hiku and Patrick Herbert who returned home to New Zealand to be with family.

“We kept about six or seven young NSW Cup boys here and (the NRL) said we can put them in our roster,” Robinson said.

“We might have about 26 or 27 here, that should get us through

“If anyone gets injured, we can send them straight back.

“The Broncos have given us access to their feeder clubs and a few other clubs said the Warriors can use their players.

“There have been some Queensland clubs that have of-

fered players if some players want to go (home). They will help us out, which I think is fair.

“It’s not going to do much for our team, but at least we’ll still be competitive and be in the competition.”

However, with both New Zealand and Australia enforcing compulso-

ry 14-day self-isolation periods for anyone entering the country, player logistics could quickly get complicated for the club.

“If we have to stay next week after this game and it carries on, we’ll have to send five or six players from New Zealand, quarantine them for two weeks and (use them) once they come out of quarantine. We might have to do rotations with the quarantine weeks as part of it if the NRL is footing the bill for it.

“We might have to stick them in a separate part of the hotel for two weeks and then bang.

“If we can get these guys tested before they leave New Zealand or have a testing facility here straight away, we can prove they haven’t got the virus and they can come straight out, they don’t have to do their two weeks.

“That’s how we could do it.”

Despite it all, Robinson is staying positive about the club and his ownership’s future in 2020.

“I was having a yarn with them (the players) last night, telling them it could be worse.

“You could be in Italy stuck in an apartment.

“I’ve had a lot of obstacles that I have been through over the last 30 years, but we’re pretty resilient,” he said.

“That’s a process with the Warriors, we need to bunker down and look at all the expenses of the club, which is a good thing.

“We have inherited a lot of stuff and are running with it.”

Swimmers hit the pond

Jacob Fahey powers through the water in the pond swim organised by the Ashburton Masters Swimmers group. The swim was held on a private property near Hinds in calm water that was not too cold, with swimmers coming from Timaru, Christchurch and Rolleston. Fahey, from Timaru, took out the one-kilometre swim in a time of 14 minutes and 25 seconds, while local Steve Prescott took out the three-kilometre swim in a time of 42 minutes and 30 seconds.

Premiership netball season ‘under review’

By Cheree Kinnear Netball’s ANZ Premiership could be the next league to vanish from New Zealand’s stadiums and screens in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, leaving the national body frantically planning for the worst.

The Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic’s 54-48 victory over the Southern Steel on Monday was played behind closed doors at Dunedin’s Edgar Centre, to fulfil the Government’s newly announced call to cancel mass gatherings of more than 500 people.

But with other domestic competitions being cancelled due to concerns over the heightened health risks for players, more restrictions are being enforced by the day.

Speaking on the Radio Sport Breakfast, Netball New Zealand chief executive Jennie Wyllie said suspending the 2020 season was a real possibility. “[It’s] certainly one of our riskmanagement scenarios,” Wyllie said. “We’re considering all options and keeping an open mind on things.

The Mainland Tactix are still playing ANZ Premiership netball – for now.

“We’re being particularly vigilant around athlete welfare.

“We’ve yet to talk about what it all might look like going forward, but whatever it might look like we’re going to do what is the right

thing for everyone.

“It’s moving pretty quick and we’re just trying to keep our heads ahead of it to make sure we can see what’s coming and do what’s right for everybody involved.”

Should the competition be called off, Wyllie admitted the financial repercussions on the sport were worrying.

When asked how much time the national body’s war chest

could give them, she said: “not enough”.

“All sports will be in a position where they’re going to sail close to the wind and it’s going to go right throughout the system, it won’t just be us at a national level,” she said.

“There’s some really big decisions that need to be made.

“We’re just hoping that we can ride this one through.”

Provided things don’t change between now and the weekend, round two of the ANZ Premiership is set to continue without spectators.

Sunday’s two games will be held in Auckland and Wellington, while Monday’s is in Tauranga.

Wyllie said the wellbeing of players and officials remained at the forefront.

“It’s something that we’re going to loop back with on all of our people,” she said.

“As we all know, crowds make a massive difference as well so it’s something that we want to test with the players.

“They’re there to play netball as well but we know that their welfare is pretty important.”

Rippa Rugby cancelled

The cancellation of Rippa Rugby is the first community rugby casualty following the Government’s announcement this week.

Mid Canterbury Rugby (MCRU) chief executive Ian Patterson confirmed the primary school competition was to be cancelled effective immediately.

The move follows Prime Mnister Jacinda Ardern’s announcement on Monday that gatherings of 500 or more people in New Zealand – held outdoors or indoors – would not go ahead in the battle to stop the spread of Covid-19.

The outbreak which was officially declared a pandemic seven days ago by the World Health Organisation has brought professional sport globally to a grinding halt.

The Government’s announcement this week is now impacting on community events including many local sporting competitions.

New Zealand Rugby (NZR) head of participation and development Steve Lancaster issued a statement off the back of the Government’s post-Cabinet conference.

Lancaster said the NZR was advising provincial unions, clubs and schools to make decisions which were best for their “participants, whanau and communities”.

“At present there are no restrictions on mass gatherings or community activities under 500 people.

“Rugby events, matches and any activities which may attract more than 500 people are asked to inform their attendees of cancellations.

The Mid Canterbury Rugby Union Primary Schools Rippa competition has been cancelled in response to the Government’s ban on mass gatherings.

It is unclear whether local club rugby competitions including the Luisetti Seeds Combined Country Competition which kicks off in 10 days will run as planned.

The UC Championships and UC Cup competitions are also scheduled to start in May.

Canterbury Rugby Union commercial and marketing general manager Simon Carter said there would be an announcement in the next 48 hours but it remained a “wait and see” situation.

School Sport NZ announced all events on the School Sport NZ national calendar are suspended with a review of the decision to take place on April 6.

Mainland Football confirmed,

in a Facebook post yesterday, all federations have a planned call with New Zealand Football this morning at 9am where an update on discussions between the governing body and Sport NZ would be provided.

All netball in Mid Canterbury has been suspended, following a directive from Netball New Zealand in response to the Covid-19 crisis.

It was confirmed yesterday a meeting between Netball NZ and the five regional zones had led to an advisory to all netball centres and competition organisers that a decision had been made to postpone all winter competitions until at least May 2.

Mid Canterbury’s premier netball competition was scheduled to begin on April 30, a day after social netball kicked off in the area.

Mid Canterbury Netball (MCN) centre manager Erin Tasker said planned and ongoing events such as walking netball, Fast 5 and player development programmes have been suspended, effective immediately.

Further, this weekend’s Have a Go day and next weekend’s junior tournament have also been called off.

“MCN will meet this week to discuss what this means for netball in Mid Canterbury this season,” Tasker said.

MCN also encouraged clubs and schools to delay their pre-season requirements accordingly.

“Recognising the need for teams to prepare for a competition starting from May 2 at the earliest, clubs and schools in the process of trialling, naming teams and commencing trainings are to postpone until four weeks before the start of their competition or the first week in April at the earliest “Given the changing environment this position may change in coming weeks.”

‘Disappointed’ but the right decision

The Ashburton Rowing Club say they are disappointed, but common sense needed to prevail following the announcement the 2020 Maadi Cup would be cancelled.

The national secondary schools’ regatta, which is one of the biggest school events in the Southern Hemisphere, was scheduled to begin on March 30 at Lake Ruataniwha, near Twizel.

However, following the Government’s post-Cabinet announcement around mass gatherings, School Sport NZ confirmed all events on the School Sport NZ national calendar would be suspended, including the 2020 Maadi Cup. The competition was expected to attract more than 2000 competitors.

“I’m disappointed ultimate-

ly, but it was reasonably clear from some time ago that this was probably going to happen.

The disappointment had been shared by the pupils, however they have had a good season of results to this point, Wall said.

“They’ve performed very well and have plenty of reason looking back to be pleased with what they’ve done.

“It is what it is.”

Social distancing and other protocols were to be implemented if the Maadi Cup had gone ahead.

“It was pretty clear of where it was heading,” Wall said.

Wall suspected there would be further complications after the North American rowing season was suspended a fortnight ago.

His daughter Veronica Wall, who is a national rowing champion, attends Yale University and arrived back in Mid Canterbury yesterday.

Club netballers won’t be seen on court at least until May 2.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

It was redemption for veteran John Delore when he clinched Tinwald Cycling Club’s Mid Canterbury Championship on Saturday.

The season finale featured another competitive field wrestle for places along the 64km Wakanui beach block course.

It may have been especially poignant for Delore, who was pipped on the finish line in the corresponding event back in 1969, finishing second.

Delore and his co-markers worked well together to find the front of the race, and dug deep to keep the chasing pack at bay.

He beat Nigel Leary in a sprint to the line to etch his name on the cup.

Leary’s second place was just reward for a great day at the office and a solid season of riding.

Penny Costello led the chasing group in to secure third and clinch the senior women’s fastest time ribbon.

Not far off was Shona McGrath, who claimed fourth spot and the women’s veteran 3 title.

Liz Wylie and Brent Hudson rounded out the top six places.

Scratch marker Oliver Davidson produced an immense ride to claim the overall fastest time honours, riding the distance in 92mins 11secs.

The evergreen Tony Ward secured second fastest time and the veteran 3 fastest time spoils.

Rob Hooper grabbed veteran 2 honours and Christchurch’s Brent Cowie claimed the veteran 4 fastest time.

Ending the season on a high was Marcel Smithers, who

clinched the veteran 1 gong.

Mid Canterbury teen Caitlin Titheridge won the women’s under-19 category.

The juniors and division 2 fields battled it out over the 16km event.

A season-best display by Sarah Gould handed her the junior Mid Canterbury Championship title.

Leah Reid was also in top notch form as she finished the event as runner-up.

Third place went to Holly Crawford-Douglas to finish her debut season in style.

Sisters Tegan and Penny Marriott were in the thick of the finish, taking fourth and fifth places respectively.

Sixth place finisher Zac Brookland clinched the under-15 boys fastest time ribbon alongside Zoe Spillane who won the girls’.

Scratch markers Ferg Sail and Maddi Lowry secured the under-17 boys’ and girls’ time trophies respectively.

Debbie Skinner took the division 2 spoils from Janette Hooper, with third place-getter Kenny Johnston claiming the fastest time.

■■SHEARING

Competitions hard-hit by virus-led cancellations Most of the remaining shearing sports competitions this season seem likely to be cancelled as the nation steps-up preventing the spread of the coronavirus Covid-19.

Four events on one of the busiest weekends of the season this Saturday and Sunday have been cancelled, and major shows the New Zealand Shears and the Royal Easter Show are considering their situations over the next 24 hours.

Already cancelled are the Warkworth show north of Auckland and the Methven A & P Show, each of which had been scheduled for Saturday, and the Waitomo Sports in the King Country and the Flaxbourne A & P Show in Marlborough, both

of which had been scheduled for Sunday.

The Waimarino Shears in central North Island town Raetihi on Saturday are still going ahead, according to a decision made by its committee on Monday night.

The committee released a statement yesterday saying it was confident it could handle the measures needed to be put in place according to latest advice, but it is monitoring the situation.

Steps being taken will include the recording of name and contact details for all those present and where they have come from.

The statement included full details of warnings and advice as published by the

Ministry of Health, and competitors and supporters are being told to stay away if they are unwell.

New Zealand Shears president Claire Grainger said the committee’s regular meeting was told of the position and the advice and given 24 hours to decide whether its annual championships on April 2-4 will go-ahead in Waitomo District Council public facility the Les Munro Centre. A special meeting was being held last evening.

Held in the centre each year since 1985, the championships generally attract fullhouse Friday and Saturday night attendances, and around 200 competitors.

Hasahalo sets new online record A new online thoroughbred auction record was set on Monday night when the China Horse Club secured New Zealand Group One winning mare Hasahalo for $670,000 on gavelhouse.com.

The daughter of Savabeel won the Gr.1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) for trainer Stephen McKee and her Go Racing syndicate, in addition to the Gr.3 Eclipse Stakes (1200m) as a juvenile, while she also boasted placings in both the Gr.2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes (1200m) and Listed Karaka Million 2YO (1200m).

The price eclipsed the previous online auction record set when Group One-winning mare Consensus also sold on gavelhouse. com to Yulong Investments for $622,500 in December.

“She’s a standout physical that was a Group winning two-yearold and runner-up in the Karaka Million,” China Horse Club bloodstock assistant Michael Smith said.

“She was then able to train on at three and add a Group One Classic to her resume. She’s a great addition to the China Horse Club broodmare band.

Options for Levante Group One performed mare Supera may be joined in next month’s Gr.1 Fiber Fresh NZ Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m) at Te Aroha by emerging stablemate Levante, giving Matamata trainers Ken and Bev Kelso a two-pronged attack on the fillies and mares feature.

Levante suffered her first defeat in five starts when beaten into second in Saturday’s Gr.2 Wellington Guineas (1400m) but lost no admirers after turning in a colossal performance after bombing the start.

The daughter of Proisir missed the start by eight lengths, but she was able to make up the lost ground and stormed home late through the pack to finish second, a long neck away from Gold Bracelet.

Ken Kelso was proud of his filly’s resolve and was philosophical in defeat.

“It’s just one of those things, that’s racing,” he said.

“Those sort of things happen and there is not much you can do about it.

“You don’t see horses miss it by eight (and do what she did) especially in a Group race.

“I thought it was all over at that stage and I thought if she ran midfield it would be quite a good run.

“She still would have got up had she not been crowded in the straight.

“Star Of Bombay came across on her when she was mounting her run, so it was a fantastic effort.

“You don’t see them to do that very often.

She has got a lot of talent and she can only keep improving as well. She has got to develop even further.

“She is quite exciting going forward.”

Kelso said the horses surrounding her in the gates were fractious ahead of the start and he believes that distraction was the major reason Levante missed the start.

“I went and viewed the film with John Oatham (stipendiary Steward) afterwards and the horses either side of her were playing up quite badly in the stalls,” he said.

“She was looking at them and was distracted by them and just totally missed it (start).”

Kelso has been pleased with Levante since her return home and said he will sit down with her owners to discuss the re-

“But we have got a couple of options and the Breeders’ is one and there is the Cambridge Breeders’ (Gr.3, 1200m) at Te Rapa, dropping back to 1200m, but that is six weeks away.

“The New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ is three weeks away so we will be want-

ing to make a call by the end of this week in which direction we are heading.

“It is going to be a good field because there will be Supera, Avantage etc. I think she could be up to it, but we will have a discussion with the owners and see where we are heading.”

While Kelso is still contemplating Levante’s path, Supera has pleased the Matamata horseman since her third-placing in the Gr.1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2000m) at Ellerslie earlier this month.

“She has come through the Bonecrusher very well,” he said.

“She had a quiet week and she has started to work up again now and I am very happy with her.

“She is in great order and she will freshen up nicely coming back to the mile.”

DEATHS MacPHERSON, Doreen Ann (nee Gluyas) – at Ashburton Hospital on March 17, 2020. Aged 78 years. Loved wife of the late John W R MacPherson, third youngest child of the late Dora and Claude Gluyas, loved sister of Bill, the late Mary, the late Pat, Judy, Anne, and Pam. Doreen leaves behind her children John, Nicky, Stuart, and Teresa and her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

BDI, Woodend withdraw The Combined Country Rugby Cup round robin has been re-drawn after two teams pulled out on Monday.

Burnham-Dunsandel-Irwell (BDI) and would-be newcomers Woodend both alerted competition organisers of their withdrawal, dropping the entries from 23 to 21 – two weeks out from kick-off.

“This is disappointing for not only those two clubs but also for the competition as a whole,” the Combined Competition Committee said in a statement.

As the two teams were both drawn in Pool B – and were scheduled to meet in round 1 on March 28 – the pools, and the draw, had to be reorganised.

“The committee has worked quickly to come up with a suitable solution for the

draw and competition structure that provides as little disruption as possible.”

Rather than a pool of eight, one of seven and one of six, the three pools all now boast seven teams and will have a bye, with Southbridge sliding from Pool A to Pool B. “To ensure an even geographical spread amongst the pools it is an Ellesmere side that needs to move.”

As BDI were seeded sixth after last year’s competition and Southbridge were seeded eighth, the committee went with Southbridge, over Waihora, Hornby, or Lincoln from Pool A. BDI said via social media that the “BDI senior club, coaches, and management have made the decision to remove the BDI Div 1 team from the ERSU competition for

2020, due to the lack of Div 1 player numbers”.

“A lot of work has gone on behind the scene to make this year work, but it is not to be.”

It is understood Woodend had been battered by injuries during the pre-season, including several season-ending setbacks in key positions which had affected squad depth.

How does this change affect each pool?

Due to all teams now having a bye there will be no points awarded for byes.

Pool A: Teams drawn to play Southbridge will now have a bye on those weeks There are two changes to other matches where the home venue is reversed to en-

sure each side has three home and three away matches: Kaiapoi v Hurunui – Kaiapoi now home team.

Rakaia v Hampstead – Rakaia now home team.

Pool B: Southbridge will take the place of Woodend in the draw.

Teams who were drawn to play BDI will now have a bye on those weeks.

There are a couple of games v Southbridge that aren’t at reverse venues of 2019 however this was required to ensure each side has three home and three away matches.

Pool C: No changes as already a pool of 7.
