Tully appeal delayed

A Court of Appeal hearing for Work and Income killer Russell John Tully has been delayed, potentially for three months.

The hearing was to have started on March 28, however the Court of Appeal this week advised the hearing had adjourned to accommodate another matter, set down for hearing on May 31-June 1.

The Tully appeal will not come before the court until the outcome of that matter is decided, which could take three months.

During his sentencing hearing in the High Court in Christchurch last year Tully indicated his intention to appeal his conviction on two counts of murder, one of attempted murder and various other charges laid in relation to the shooting rampage in Ashburton’s Work and Income office on September 1, 2014.

He was found not guilty of at-

tempting to murder Lindy Curtis, who was shot twice in the leg.

He denied responsibility for shooting dead Winz employees Peggy Noble and Leigh Cleveland and attempting to kill Kim Adams.

In sentencing Tully to life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of 27 years in May last year, Justice Cameron described him as “a very dangerous” man, who had no regard for his victims.

It was the second longest sentence handed down in New Zealand.

Tully is currently represented by senior barrister Craig Tuck.

By the time Tully came to trial in February last year he had sacked numerous lawyers and was unrepresented. Instead the court appointed amicus curiae James Rapley and Phil Shamy to assist with the running of the trial and to cross examine witnesses on behalf of Tully.

US embassy staffer asked to leave The US embassy in New Zealand has refused to waive diplomatic immunity for one of its staff members New Zealand police want to question.

An incident involving a diplomat from the US embassy was brought to the attention of New Zealand police on Sunday, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman says.

MFAT was asked by police on Monday to request a waiver of immunity from the US to enable police to undertake investigations, and did so that day.

The US government has on Friday declined to waive the diplomat’s immunity.

Therefore, MFAT has asked the US to withdraw the staff

member in question from New Zealand.

Police were called to an address in Lower Hutt but the man, who works at the embassy in Wellington as a technical attache, had left, apparently nursing a broken nose and a black eye.

A US government spokesman says as a matter of policy “we do not comment on the specifics of matters under investigation”.

“We take seriously any suggestion that our staff have fallen short of the high standards of conduct expected of US government personnel.

The spokesman says the US is communicating with New Zealand authorities.

New florist to bloom in CBD

A new florist is set to bloom in the Ashburton CBD. Samantha Rose Flowers is all set for its special, three-hour grand opening on Tuesday, which is an exciting time for shop-owner Samantha Trott.

Having started training in the world of floristry after leaving school, Trott has picked up experience working in Christchurch and Australia, before moving

back to Ashburton to set up shop.

“I was always creative at school and knew that I was going to pursue a creative job when I finished school,” she said.

“Having moved around a lot, I knew that I would come back to Ashburton to start up a business.”

After starting in her garage creating the perfect flowers for friends’ weddings, she steadily moved on to doing more commercially-based jobs, before

finding the perfect home on Burnett Street.

The choice of name came easily, with the middle name of Rose lending itself very handily to the industry.

Her shop was designed with a clean, modern, industrial look to stand out from other shops in town.

A variety of flowers, giftware and glassware will be available, while a special room has been set up for wedding consultations.

Tinwald students involved in Get NZ Writing project

Students from schools across Mid Canterbury are taking part in a project to get kids writing again.

The Get NZ Writing initiative was started by Warehouse Stationary to encourage kids to put pen to paper in an age dominated by text and email.

More than 3000 classes are taking part, totalling more than 90,000 students.

One of the many local classes taking part is Tinwald School’s room nine. As part of the project, the class has received 32 postcards and a poster with a variety of tasks to be completed. The postcards, when laid out in order, create an image with an important message. Each student has their own postcard which they colour the back of and write a message about themselves. The postcards are sent, along with the poster, to another school in the country.

their work north to Marlborough School, in Auckland.

To go along with the postcards, a poster was filled out by the stu-

dents, answering different questions to let their partner school know more about them.

Sections such as “the best

thing about where we live” and “the best place at our school” were filled out by the students.

Teacher, Wendy Hopwood, said

having a group project, where the students need to communicate and work together, is very important.

“The students have really loved filling out their postcards and it really has them focused and committed to doing some writing, which is brilliant,” she said.

Other Mid Canterbury schools involved in the initiative are Allenton School, Ashburton Intermediate, Mt Somers Springburn, Methven Primary School, Hinds School, Longbeach School and Wakanui School.

Vet bill in thousands for dog attack

An Ashburton family has shelled out thousands of dollars to cover vet bills after their dog was attacked two weeks ago – and have a stern message for people who allow their dogs to roam.

Kim Mills was walking her two schnauzer dogs on March 5, on a route she has used many times.

As she turned onto Bird Street, Mills noticed a dog on the other side of the road. The menacing animal crossed the road and, although she managed to get it to back off initially, launched a ferocious attack on four-year-old Floyd.

Nearby residents responded to Mills screams for help and, after making a quick assessment of the situation, armed themselves with lengths of wood and literally beat the offending dog off.

“They had to chase it around

the corner, but it was still trying to come back for another go,” Mills said.

Without levelling the blame at any particular breed, she said it looked like some type of crossbred dog, similar to those favoured by pig hunters.

Six-year-old Baxter managed to avoid the fracas and survived unscathed, but not so Floyd.

He underwent surgery immediately to repair a number of deep wounds. Three and a half hours later Mills and her husband had the first glimmer of hope when they learned he had pulled through.

However, they were not out of the woods. The tissue around the original wounds became necrotic.

Floyd was back in surgery four days after the attack to remove dead tissue, leaving an open would measuring 14 by 10cm.

He came home last Saturday

but requires daily trips to the vet to have his wounds dressed.

He is a model patient and healing well, thanks to him being in prime health, Mills said.

“We’ve still got a three month journey ahead.”

Council dog control rangers impounded the offending dog but there has been no word from its owners yet.

Mills is angry that anyone would let their dogs roam out of control.

“If you own a dog it’s your responsibility to make sure it can’t get off the property and to keep it on a leash when you take it out,” she said.

While the ordeal has been traumatic the outcome could have been worse; a smaller or older dog would not have survived, Mills said.

And there was always a chance the uncontrolled dog could have turned on a child.

Methven students learn about fire safety

Workers rights seminar A seminar on immigration and workers’ rights will be held in Ashburton on March 29 from 6pm.

The free information session is hosted by the Citizens’ Advice Bureau in conjunction with Philippines Culture and Sport, Filipino Dairy Workers in New Zealand (FDWNZ), MidCanterbury Newcomers Network and the Ashburton District Council. Speakers will include representatives from Immigration New Zealand, and Canterbury Community Law, discussing worker’s rights. The seminar will be held at the Ashburton Seniors’ Centre at 206 Cameron St, and include a light dinner. Attendance certificates will be provided. The Citizens’ Advice Bureau offers free face-to-face support to all new migrants to the region.

Long standing scout debt cancelled

An administrative error made six years ago has meant Ashburton’s Mania-o-Roto scouts have gained a $7688 funding windfall.

The association applied for $97,521 from the Ashburton District Council’s major project fund in 2011. It was granted $95,000 with $14,925 to be deducted from that amount for building consent and associated fees. That amount was never

Methven Primary School students have been learning all about fire safety.

As part of their curriculum, the students have been learning how to be firewise, through assistance from the local fire brigade.

Firefighter Ian McLean said an information pack was dropped in to the school a few weeks ago, before taking them through a variety of topics.

Ideas such as how to act safely around fire, flammable materials, and how to make an evacuation plan for their houses, following the get low, get out mantra were taught to the children.

The day was also a fantastic opportunity for the brigade to show off a new asset.

“It was the first time we made use of our new training area next door,” said McLean.

“A huge amount of volunteering and sponsorship went in to making the facility happen.”

It was a first test run of space which makes it easier to show the children what can happen and what to do in those situations.

“It worked perfectly and it is a great thing to have,” he said.

will be cancelled. The association will not seek compensation for the undergrounding work while the council will not chase up the grant over payment.

The council decided that chasing the over payment after so long was not fair to an organisation that had limited funds.

And looking to the future when the second bridge accessed off Chalmers Avenue the two parties will need to work together to find the best option for access to the scouts grounds.

Two dead in house fire Two people are dead and three are in Waikato Hospital, one in a critical condition, after a house fire near Taupo overnight.

Emergency services were called to State Highway 5 in Rangitaiki, 30km south of Taupo shortly before 3am yesterday, St John said.

Police confirmed two people died in the fire.

One person was taken by helicopter to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition.

A second helicopter took two patients to hospital with moderate injuries.

Cheetah attacks boy A New Zealand boy has been attacked by a cheetah in South Africa. Isaac Driver, 14, was attacked by the big cat while on a family holiday. The Christchurch boy received injuries to his back and shoulder. Isaac and his family were among a group of about 20 people at Emdoneni park who were supervised as they patted two cheetahs. Mandy Driver said that as the group left the enclosure, one of the cheetahs pushed her son to the ground with “full force. [The cheetah] landed him on the ground as though it was eating him.”

Award winner battles for top award Community House Mid Canterbury will go head to head with the country’s top voluntary groups and organisations at the 2016 Trustpower National Community Awards next week.

Twenty-four other supreme winners from the regional Trustpower Community Awards, will take part in the awards in the Rotorua Lakes region, from March 24 to 26.

Local representatives, John Driscoll and Leandra Fitzgibbon, will attend the awards on behalf of Community House Mid Canterbury, along with Ashburton District Mayor Donna Favel and councillor, Thelma Bell.

They will be required to give an eight-minute presentation on what the group has achieved and why they deserve the title of Trustpower National Community Awards Supreme Winner.

Trustpower community relations representative Abbie Siely says Community House Mid Canterbury’s story is one of triumph over adversity.

“Community House Mid Canterbury was established to foster the provision of social services by providing low-rental offices and administrative support to community organisations,” she said.

In 2014, the group was making do in a smaller building that could accommodate only one-third of its original tenants, when tragedy struck Ashburton with fatal shootings at the Work and Income offices.

Community House Mid Canterbury made the brave decision to purchase the vacated building and

repurpose it for the benefit of the community.

In addition to the logistics of fundraising the purchase price, the group showed tremendous courage to lead their community on a journey towards healing.

They will be judged on their presentation, along with a 1000word summary of the organisation.

Siely said Ashburton could feel incredibly proud to be represent-

ed by the Community House Mid Canterbury.

The Trustpower National Community Awards Supreme Winner will take home a custom-made trophy, $4000 in prize money, a framed certificate and a $1000 consultancy voucher from one of New Zealand’s leading training providers for the community sector, Exult.

The runner-up will receive $2500 in prize money, a $500 Exult

voucher and a framed certificate.

The Whetu Mataiata Award recipient receives a framed certificate and a consultancy service package from Exult.

Educating today for tomorrow

The world of work is changing and schools need to change if they want to ensure students are ready to meet the challenges that working world of the future will offer, Ashburton College principal Ross Preece said.

At a meeting earlier this week, Preece left his audience in no doubt that New Zealand schools must change the way they educated students; most of what was taught and the way it was taught would be irrelevant in tomorrow’s workplace, he said.

“My job and my challenge is to get staff to understand they need to prepare students for the future, a changing future.

Staff and students are beginning to understand the necessity for change but the biggest challenge in education leadership is to get the community to understand that the education they received is increasingly irrelevant today.”

Educating students for a future in which many of today’s jobs would no longer exist and new, as yet unknown, jobs would be created meant softer skills such as working co-operatively, taking risks, and developing perseverance would be important, he said.

The college would be undertaking some curriculum reform, although it would not move towards the new, project based model, immediately, Preece said.

“If we continue to teach today what we taught yesterday we will be depriving children of the education they need, but how do you change a school, a curriculum overnight?”

Ministry of Education planners had already predicted that

the current NCEA exam system would disappear within 10 years, he said.

“They don’t know what will replace it but it will be gone. There are changes ahead, there’s lots to think about and it’s scary – but exciting.”

The college was making a ‘very gentle’ change towards project-based learning away from ‘subject silos’, Preece said.

The most likely change next year would be the integration of some subjects for year nine students, he said.

“They’re already used to working in that environment. The change is about making learning more relevant. It’s about inquiry based learning, following your passion, working in a group environment.”

Teachers in the new environment would not be the wise sages standing in front of a classroom, imparting knowledge, they would be facilitators moving between groups of students, he said.

“You can put your head in the sand and ignore this but in the end, schools will be forced to adapt.”

While there had been many changes in the way children were educated over the decades, the last major change occurred more than a century ago when students were taught according to age, subject matter and ability.

During the meeting a documentary was screened that followed a year in the life of an American high school where there was no curriculum and education was fully project based and student driven.

Instead of assessments and exams, students held an exhibition of their work.

In brief Pet food first Kiwi scientists have achieved a breakthrough in pet food research that marks them out as world leaders in canine nutrition, Science and Innovation Minister Paul Goldsmith says. AgResearch and Massey University did the work, funded by an alliance of pet food manufacturers and the government. The scientists explored how a high meat diet affects microbes in the guts of dogs, and found it’s the best choice for their health. “It’s great news for our premium pet food export market, which is widely recognised as producing some of the best raw meat products in the world,” Mr Goldsmith said.

“It’s a significant contribution to the international canine nutrition field and it positions New Zealand scientists as leaders in this area.”

Temporary penguin hospital successful A temporary Dunedin-based hospital has saved 34 yelloweyed penguins over a nine-week period.

Organisers say that’s a consideration contribution to the penguin population, given there are only 250 breeding pairs on the mainland.

The pop-up hospital, funded by the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust and housed at Otago Polytechnic, closed yesteray.

Wildlife vet Lisa Argilla says the birds that have gone through have required intensive care.

“It’s been fantastic working from Dunedin,” she said.

“I truly believe we’ve made a real difference to the success of care this season.”

Yellow-eyed penguins live and breed in the southern regions of New Zealand, and trust general manager Sue Murray says injured birds are normally sent to the North Island.

She says one of the main problems is infection.

“By having immediate treatment, we’ve been able to save more birds,” she said.

“Our members helped fund this project, so it’s great to report on its success.”

Dr Argilla will stay on for a few days to care for the remaining penguins, but any newly injured birds will now be treated by local vets, or flown to Wellington or Palmerston North.

New Zealand and Argentina have signed an agricultural co-operation agreement which opens the way for joint research.

Primary Industries minister Nathan Guy and Argentina’s Secretary of Agriculture, Ricardoi Negri, signed the agreement on Wednesday during Negri’s visit to New Zealand. Guy says the two countries already have a close relationship in agricultural science and the agreement allows greater cooperation.“ NZME

Last minute guilty plea Eleventh hour guilty pleas have come from a man on trial for abduction, sexual connection and burglary charges. The pleas were made yesterday as closing arguments were to begin in the Rotorua District Court where a jury of 11 women and one man have been trying the defendant since March 6. Judge Maree MacKenzie convicted the 38-year-old on the abduction charge. Representative sexual connection charges were compressed into one and burglary charges were reduced to receive by the Crown after the defendant intimated his intended plea change. The man was issued with the first of a three strikes warning.

The defendant was remanded in custody.

Cleaner and greener one client at a time M

ethven businesswoman, Megan Watene has found the perfect home-life balance and yet it’s taking her right across the world.

Since starting as an ENJO seller, the mum of two has progressed to become one of the top 30 sellers in the world, rising swiftly through the ranks in the past few years.

It’s been a change of pace for the former office worker, who is now on a mission to make New Zealand homes as chemical free as possible.

The team leader has just returned from a conference in Abu Dhabi where she had the opportunity to interact with like-minded people from all over the world.

“The trip was amazing,” she said.

“It was definitely a culture shock, but I love learning about other countries and cultures.”

One of only four who travelled from New Zealand, Megan was part of a group of 100 staying at the famed Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, a beachfront five-star hotel.

However, the trip was not without its hairraising moments.

At the time, the Guardian reported that the plane Megan was travelling on was forced to request an emergency landing into Hong Kong due to a technical issue.

The flight circled for more than four hours before returning to Hong Kong International Airport.

Megan was flying with colleagues, Jackie Floris, from Christchurch, and Jo Reeder, from Hamilton.

She told the Guardian that passengers noticed something wasn’t right straight after take-off.

“Once in the air it was turbulent and it was obvious we weren’t gaining altitude as fast as you would expect,” she said.

“Everyone was very quiet.

“There was no on-screen entertainment available either, which

meant we were forced to see the flight map and statistics on all screens. This showed us circling about 100km off the coast of Hong Kong, at a low altitude.”

In light of recent world-wide aircraft tragedies, Watene said her first thought was of her family at home.

“I wondered if I should risk turning my phone on to send a message to tell them I love them,” she said. “However, after the explanations stated to come, I felt at ease enough to relax and close my eyes until it was over. Closing my eyes and not watching the frustrating flight path made it

easier to keep positive.”

Since its early days of development in the heart of Europe, ENJO has been running for more than 25 years, offering a range of chemical-free cleaning alternatives.

Megan said the vision is that every home in the world should be chemical-free, something she believes in wholeheartedly.

“The whole ethos has kept me there,” she said. “It’s more than just selling a product, to me it’s about taking all the chemicals out of the home and making the house a healthier place to be.”

When she had children, the mother of two boys – aged six and 21 months – realised she no longer wanted a nine-to-five desk job.

The born-and-bred Methven local says the support within the district has been phenomenal while setting up her first business venture. “It’s a really supportive community.”

As Megan now expands further into Mid Canterbury and South Canterbury, her goal is to encourage schools to become chemicalfree and create “generational knowledge”.

Finding a balance between being a mum, a wife, and a businesswoman has its challenges, but any down time she has is “family time”.

This winter she looks forward to hitting the slopes with her eldest son – a sport Megan started at the age of two.

Continuing to work within her own timeframes, and be there whenever her boys need her, has changed Megan’s life for the better and now she has her goals set on future success, while also making the world that little less reliant on chemicals. “(We need to promote) less packaging globally, less waste and cleaner water ways,” she said.

“I know people are becoming more aware of it, which is awesome.”

50k donation for National The National Party has received another $50,000 from the head of milk exporter Oravida, which was once caught up in a conflict of interest claim.

Oravida’s founder Deyi (Stone) Shi made the donation earlier this month.

Shi’s company has close ties to National. Former National Prime Minister Jenny Shipley is the chairwoman and director David Wong-Tung is the husband of Revenue Minister Judith Collins.

Collins came under pressure over her links to Oravida in 2014 after she met with Shi and a Chinese border official while on a ministerial visit to China, weeks after Oravida had lobbied the Government about difficulties in getting its products into China.

Oravida has previously given $30,000 to National, and Shi once donated $55,000 in a charity auction to play golf with former Prime Minister John Key. Shi is also the owner of Ardmore airport.

Any donations of more than $30,000 must be declared to the Electoral Commission within 10 days.

Loose aviation security dog shot The aviation security dog that got loose at Auckland Airport, and who was shot dead, was only 10 months old and in socialisation training.

The Civil Aviation Authority has released the series of events that lead up to Grizz’s death yesterday.

“Something caused Grizz, a trainee detector dog, to escape from his handler while he was being loaded in to the back of the Avsec Explosive Detector Dog unit wagon at Auckland Airport around 4.30am today.”

He managed to get through the security area when a gate opened to let a truck through.

Staff found it difficult to locate him as it was dark, and he did not have a permanent handler so didn’t respond as well as a dog who does.

As part of his training before undertaking block courses and assessments including the critical task of identifying explosives, he was on an airport environment socialisation programme, and was six months away from graduating.

“We tried everything, food, toys, other dogs, but nothing would work.

“The area is too vast and too open to try and use mobile fencing,” the CAA said.

“All of Auckland’s Avsec off duty dog handlers were called in and

About 16 domestic and international flights were delayed after Grizz broke free.

After three hours of trying to catch the canine, airport staff directed police officers to shoot it.

There were lessons to be learnt, he added, saying the airport had to get a tranquilliser gun.

“There was a non-lethal solution, they were not prepared. We expect that something is now put in place for future incidents, Kriek said.

But police and Auckland Airport say they had no other choice.

Grizz was a 10 month old Bearded Collie/German short haired Pointer cross.

The approximate cost of getting a dog like Grizz to final graduation is around $100,000, once they have completed all of the stages of block and on-the-job training.

RURAL WOMEN REPORTS President’s message Mid Canterbury Rural Women NZ is inviting applications for their 2017 Tertiary Scholarship. It is our organisation’s desire to contribute to further education within the community.

With student debt increasing and fees rising, our annual scholarship offers the opportunity to alleviate some of this pressure.

Grants totalling $2500 are offered to men or women with a home base within the boundaries of Mid Canterbury. You may be studying either full time or a part time course.

Anama The February meeting was held in the Mayfield Church hall with 12 present and six apologies.

Concern was expressed for those who had been ill or in hospital, and good

wishes extended for a grandson’s engagement.

The branch had sent $500 to the North Canterbury Rural Support Trust, and baking was done by members in the wake of the Kaikoura earthquake.

A letter of thanks and a phonecall was received from the trust.

Secretary Pat Bishell reported on a very successful social December gathering at Ngaire and Neil Mackenzie’s home.

Celebrations are being planned for the 85th anniversary of Mid Canterbury Rural Women (originally Women’s Division of Federated Farmers), with costumes, dress, food and culture through the decades on display.

Speaker for the morning was Pauline Hewson JP. She talked about the English origins and development of the Justice of the Peace organisation, then early days in the colony of New Zealand. James Kendall was the first Justice appointed to New Zealand in 1814

by Governor Macquarie.

Without any real law enforcement to help, and the isolation from Sydney, he faced many challenges. The Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 and made New Zealand a British Colony. The Royal Charter made provision for more JPs to be appointed.

Members were interested in hearing about the reading of the Riot Act and its origins in Britain.

Today’s Justice of the Peace assists people from all walks of life with services which include signing legal documents, taking statutory declarations, certifying copies, witnessing signatures, visa applications, affidavits and

affirmations. There are 64 active JPs in the Ashburton district.

Lynnford After a break of two months, a fine day with the opportunity to view a member’s new home at Lake Hood, there was an attendance of 20 members for the February meeting of the Lynnford Rural Women.

As there was no speaker, it was an opportunity for a relaxed afternoon with many discussions for the upcoming year, with banking and catering to the fore.

The form was passed around for members to fill in for hosting meetings for the coming year.

The South Island Field Days are to be held at Kirwee and helpers are needed on March 30 to man the information tent.

Marion informed us that Life Education started their programme for 2017 in the first week of the school term.

The 85th celebration of the Ashburton provincial is to be held at the A&P Pavilion in November and members of each branch is asked to dress in period costume. Lynnford’s time frame is 1940s or 1980s.

Wedding dresses were being asked for to be paraded or displayed.

Although the annual meeting is some months away and Bev will be overseas, she informed the meeting of her desire to stand down, at least for a year while she settles into her new position in Rural Women.

After the meeting, our host Rosalind showed us through her home, which was much admired by all.

Seafield The new year for the Seafield Rural Women started with seven members, plus Joyce’s daughter Sharon, meeting at the EA Networks Centre café.

Kerry, our president, welcomed us all and hoped we all had a lovely break over Christmas.

We then wished two members happy birthday – one had her 90th birthday and the other was turning 75 the next day.

Motto was: Patience is not the ability to wait, but the ability to keep a good attitude while waiting – Joyce Meyer.

Went through all the business that was on hand then carried on to general business.

Kerry gave us a report about what was going to be the format of the provincial 85th jubilee in November and what our branch was going to do for it.

We then asked if we were agreeable to do a knitting project for the community by knitting scarves and hats or beanies for the Cancer Society. Everyone agreed to this.

We then made up the programme for the next 12 months with only two months that weren’t filled in.

We closed the meeting and got something to eat and drink.

Some members then left while the rest of us went and had a look around the fantastic complex we have here in Ashburton.

We should be so proud of it.

Winchmore Our annual after-five dinner was once again a great success with a good number of members and friends of Winchmore District in attendance on a warm evening at our local hall.

What a delightful speaker we had in Kathy Lynch, five times winner of the Coast to Coast, Olympian, and competitor in gruelling multi-sport endurance events who now resides with her partner of many years Peter on a small block near Methven.

Kathy once said “It’s better to wear out than rust”.

The stories she told of her life as an athlete were most enjoyable.

She was in the Coast to Coast events at the early stage when Health and Safety and all the other regulations we have today were only in the future and it was real Kiwi No.8 wire seat-of-thepants type of action. No funding, no coaches and she was even her own bike mechanic as she could trust her own workmanship. With no funding Kathy had to work to fund her sport and entry to all these events.

As well as New Zealand events Kathy competed in America and Europe for a number of years in our winter and then in New Zealand event in our summer.

Those in attendance were delighted with her style of presentation and some of the stories she told us about her times with adventure sport and also her own experiences learning how to shear and other farming activities.

The catering team from St Andrew’s Church provided us with a lovely twocourse meal.

Local farmers and Zone Committee work together to protect the natural environment A Mt Somers farming couple, Elspeth and Charles Jaine, have recently fenced off 3ha to protect a wetland and creek on their mixed sheep and beef farm.

The Ashburton Water Zone Committee granted $5000 from its Immediate Steps Fund to help with the work.

Around $100,000 is available each year to help local environmental restoration and preservation projects.

tate Highway 85, the 160kmlong romp between Palmerston and Alexandra, is one my favourite South Island road trips, with the striking scenery and tucked away treats of the Maniototo at its heart.

Loosely scattered with schist rock stacks in wondrously free-form designs, the frontier feel to this big sky country is intoxicating, like a roll call of Graham Sydney canvases in vivid 3D. Fifteen minutes out of Palmerston, pull over at the signpost for the McCormicks Creek Bridge, which most travellers race past.

Built in 1869, this gorgeous schist arch bridge, is one of the last examples of the old coach bridges, erected during the Otago goldrush.

After twisting and turning through the Inch Valley and the Kakanui Ranges, the fabled high plateau of the Maniototo unfurls before you, as you near Kyeburn on SH85.

Prior to the goldrush, flowing red tussocks thickly carpeted the landscape.

(Maniototo translates as Plains of Blood.)

Fires have destroyed much of the original grasslands, but as you approach Kyeburn, you can see the best remnant of these blood red beauties.

Ambling past Ranfurly, the Art Deco town of the south, veer off SH85 for the short 10km diversion to Naseby.

been teleported direct from Toytown.

Walk the village lanes and delight in the clutch of rose-clad cottages, old wooden churches, elegant stone buildings and storied pubs, chiefly the 154-year-old Royal Hotel. But beyond the familiar and the welltrafficked, stake out some of the truly tucked-away gems.

Twenty kilometres from Naseby, Kyeburn Diggings was the northernmost town of the Maniototo – now a ghost town where the sole survivor is the Dansey’s Pass Coaching Inn. Offering hearty fare, boutique accommodation and a superb bar packed with curios, it’s a compelling proposition with an unmistakable frontier charm.

The long and low-slung hotel remains a stirring roadside refuge amid the monochromatic terrain of imposing brown hills.

First built in 1862 as a corrugatediron shack, it was rebuilt for beer, a decade later. The stonework was constructed by a mason known as Happy Bill, who received one pint for every schist boulder he shaped and laid.

It’s a heroic reminder of the history of this ephemeral boomtown, that swelled in size to over 2000 residents.

Dansey’s Pass was originally an ancient greenstone gathering route for Maori.

The full traverse across the pass is a challenging 50km journey, on a narrow and unforgiving gravel road.

ghosts aniototo to the coaching inn – it’s a breeze.

Another sublime Maniototo ghost town also requires a slight detour from SH85, on a lonely looping gravel road to reach St Bathans. At last count, there are only six living inhabitants left – but no shortage of ghosts, apparently.

The Rose is the most celebrated spirit, a prostitute who serviced the Vulcan Hotel over a century ago. Her enduring presence makes this movie set-perfect village a perennial hotspot for paranormal enthusiasts.

The dramatic man-made Blue Lake was the deepest mining hole in the Southern Hemisphere, for a time. Sixty-nine metres deep, the huge pit was cleaved out of Kildare Hill over 70 years, ringed by sculpted limestone outcrops.

Some locals swear the lake is haunted, where the ghosts of goldminers can be seen rising from its depths after dark.

The irresistible Vulcan Hotel is the only surviving pub in St Bathans, and one of the oldest mudbrick adobe buildings still standing in New Zealand.

Room 1 is apparently home to The Rose, who was strangled in the pub in 1880.

Numerous guests vow and declare they felt grabbed and held down in the night. Another essential hidden treasure, on the edge of the Maniototo, is Ophir.

This pint-sized village ranks alongside St Bathans, Naseby and Clyde as one of the country’s most authentic gold rush settlements.

Grab a walking map and soak up the parade of historic buildings that flank the main street, headlined by the Ophir Post Office, an exquisite stone structure built in 1886, with the unique distinction of being the oldest continually-operating post office in the country.

Ophir is proof positive of how a settlement that could easily have slid into oblivion is basking on the back of the Otago Central Rail Trail, which rolls through town.

Tourism is the lifeblood of this reborn ghost town, revitalising the trove of legacy cottages and buildings, crafted in local schist stone and mudbrick.

In a stark reminder of the climate extremes, where the summer mercury can soar deep into the 30s, Ophir registered New Zealand’s second coldest recorded temperature in 1995, when the winter chill plunged to -21.6°C. It has only been beaten

by Ranfurly, which dipped to -25.6°C in 1903.

Don’t miss the river-spanning spectacle on the southern outskirts of Ophir: the Daniel O’Connell Bridge. Erected in 1880, this is one of New Zealand’s oldest surviving suspension bridges, towering above the Manuherikia River with its iconic solid schist piers and russet red railings.

When the bridge was first completed in 1880, a whole roasted bullock was consumed to celebrate its opening. Legends sure live on in the marvellous Maniototo. www.centralotagonz.com

Less than a month out from the start of the rugby season the Southern Rugby Club has received a massive blow.

A vehicle has entered the Hinds Domain grounds and in a lengthy joyride caused a large amount of damage to two of the club’s fields on the eastern side of the domain.

With two pre-season matches last night for both the senior and senior B sides, the timing of the vandalism is less than ideal.

“There’s a few words I could say, but I won’t,” club president Peter Lowe said.

“It’s frustrating because there’s a lot of work that has gone into the grounds in an effort to have them

as near to perfect as we could get them, only for someone to come in and wreck that in a matter of minutes.”

Lowe said he believed that whoever had caused the damage had entered into the Hinds Domain grounds and noticed access to the fields was achievable due to a new layout with new changing sheds recently installed.

“We had been around putting chains across to stop vehicles, but unfortunately the gate was open and they’ve spotted that and got in that way.”

A member of the Hinds township was alerted to the activity which occurred around midnight on Thursday night and has taken note of the vehicle after disturbing their fun.

“

There’s a real sense of ownership with this club and it will affect a lot of people to see this damage.

“We are incredibly grateful to the person who has heard them and put a stop to it, but was also clever enough to get a vehicle description too.”

Security cameras operate in the area and there was a strong belief that they would play a major role in figuring out who was responsible.

“We are going to have more than 40 rugby players turn up here tonight (Friday) and I would take a guess that they are going to be pretty annoyed.

“There’s a real sense of ownership with this club and it will affect a lot of people to see this damage.”

Southern’s vice-president and groundsman, Phil Cushnie, said

a major saving grace was that the majority of the damage was done on a kids’ field next to their main ground.

With a month until age-group rugby starts there would be some time to do remedial work, but significant damage had also taken place on the main field which players would just have to deal with.

“There’s a lot of spots there where we are going to have to lay new grass seed and start again,” Cushnie said.

“It’s frustrating because we had the grounds looking really good I thought, a lot of work has gone into them this year.”

Ashburton police sergeant Bryan Ellis confirmed the matter was under investigation.

A new fast, fitness-based format of netball will be introduced to Mid Canterbury in May. After an extended period of planning and preparing the Eat Café Fast Five Netball tournament will launch on the first Tuesday of May during lunch hours.

The plan is for the tournament to offer an alternative fitness idea during the week at a convenient time while allowing people to enjoy another format of the sport of netball at the same time.

Based on the extremely popular Fast Five netball format, the weekly matches will be open for anyone to enter with two different competitions.

“We will have a Business House League which will be for mixed teams and a straight women’s league,” Mid Canterbury netball’s Aimee Cosgrove said.

“We did a wee trial of it during our Summer League competition and it proved to be very successful and we had a lot of feedback from people saying how much they enjoy it and how much of

a workout it was for them.”

By holding the games during the lunch hour the hope is that it will appeal to an entirely new market of players with those keen on playing not having to be registered with Mid Canterbury Netball.

Games will consist of sixminute quarters so all matches will be completed within half an hour allowing time for players to get to and from work both before and after the match.

“We have tried to make it as convenient for as many people

as we can,” Cosgrove added.

Matches will be played at the EA Networks Centre stadium.

With the usual rules associated with Fast Five, including rolling subs and two-point shots at goal, the game is a fast-paced fun way of enjoying netball and it is hoped that this year’s inaugural running will lead on to further tournaments if successful.

Any players interested in taking part in the tournament are encouraged to get in touch with Cosgrove to get more information.

Extra-time returns One of the most unpopular rule changes in the trans-Tasman netball league has been done away with by Netball New Zealand for the new elite domestic competition.

Extra time will be reinstated for the ANZ Premiership, which gets underway in 10 days time, ensuring all matches will be played to a result.

It comes after extra time was controversially eliminated in last year’s transTasman league in order to appease broadcasters who wanted certainty to their scheduling.

The move led to an outcry from both fans and players, who found drawn games an anticlimactic ending.

The new Australian domestic league continues to let drawn results stand, but netball bosses here have opted to reintro-

duce extra time – albeit in shorter periods.

Teams will play two three minute periods of extra time – a reduction from the seven minutes each way played at international level.

Like the international game, if the scores are locked at the end of extra time, the teams will continue to play until one takes a two-goal advantage.

Netball NZ’s head of events and international Kate Agnew said the decision to bring back extra time was prompted by overwhelming feedback from stakeholders.

“Players very definitely find draws unsatisfying, they like to play to a result, they like to know the outcome.

“Fans also like for the excitement of extra time,” said Agnew.

Swimmers take on the best

A group of Ashburton’s best young swimmers will be looking to continue their good form in the pool next week when they step onto the big stage at the New Zealand Age Group Championships in Wellington.

Close to 650 swimmers from around New Zealand will converge on the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre for the five days of competition with six swimmers heading north from the Ashburton District.

Swim Team head coach, Shane Jones, said that the trip was going to be as much about gaining experience as it was gaining results.

“I think realistically, looking at the quality of what we are going to come up against next week, that our goals will be getting some PBs on the board and hopefully making a few finals,” Jones said.

“We had good success at division 2 finals a couple of weeks ago, but this is stepping up to the ultimate level for age-group swimming really and the best

in the country are going to be there.”

The Ashburton squad will provide a mixture of experience and fresh eyes to the competition with ages ranging from 14 to 17 years old.

Four of the six, Josh Giles, Bree Middleton, Courtney Elliott and Rikuya Shibahara, are heading to the event for the first time while Jared Scammell and Bailey Tait, who round out the team, competed at last year’s event.

While nowhere near the number of swimmers that Ashburton used to send to the event, Jones

said that having six qualify for this year’s nationals was still a good result all things considered.

“A few years back we were taking a lot more than what we are this year, but that’s just a sign of the stage that we are in.

“I would say that the expectation would have been that we had this number of swimmers going this year.”

The long course competition begins on Tuesday and runs through until Saturday with heats in the morning and finals are held in the evenings.

Mid Canterbury interclub tennis wraps up for the season this afternoon at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre.

After an intriguing season, which has ebbed and flowed throughout, the winners of A grade and A reserve will be announced following the final round today with all trophies still up for grabs.

Tennis centre manager, Andre van Rooyen, said they were looking forward to the day.

“It’s going to be a very relaxed format,’’ he said.

“Hopefully we will see a good turnout down at the courts to watch a few of the later matches, and we are going to have a few of our life members along to enjoy the action too which will be great.

“Then once the play is finished we will get everyone together for the prizegiving and hand out some trophies and shields.”

While winning the interclub title is always a must-achieve for any tennis player, the coveted trophy of Club of the Year is also on the line which sees points from both grades combined to find Mid Canterbury’s most successful club for the season.

In action on the court today in A grade, Methven will take on Southern, Allenton will play Tinwald and in a top-of-the-table clash from round two Fairton will take on Hampstead.

In A reserve, Southern and Methven and Allenton and Tinwald also square off, while Hampstead and Dorie will play in the other match.

Smith return a relief There was a sigh of relief that felt more like a light breeze wafting through Highlanders HQ this week.

Finally, some good news on the injury front for the Super Rugby franchise.

Co-captain Ben Smith’s return from concussion was the bright light in an otherwise gloomy scenario for coach Tony Brown.

The southerners have lost an incredible 15 players to injury in the lead up to, and during, the first three rounds of the 2017 campaign.

Brown was quick to mention the importance of Smith’s return to a battle-wounded side.

“The biggest asset Ben gives us is confidence for the team, and especially the young guys who are having to replace a few of our players,” he said.

“They can go out there and know that Ben Smith is there.

Ben Smith makes a welcome return to the Highlanders tonight.

“Most players play better when he’s on the field.”

The Highlanders line up against the Hurricanes in Wellington on Saturday night in what

will be their fourth consecutive New Zealand derby to start the season.

Westpac Stadium has fond memories for the visitors – it was

the site of their maiden title in 2015 courtesy of a 21-14 win over the Hurricanes.

However, they will be without two key members of their backline, with first five-eighth Lima Sopoaga and wing Waisake Naholo both out to hamstring injuries.

Brown said Sopoaga’s eightweek stint on the sidelines was a chance for replacement Fletcher Smith to shine.

“I think he’s is probably the most skilful guy going around New Zealand, how fast his hand speed is, and he’s got real speed,” Brown said of Fletcher Smith.

He added that Smith shouldn’t be worrying about going head to head with All Black Beauden Barrett.

“I think he needs to go out and play his game,” he said.

“If he can play his game, it’s pretty electric.”

Savea will be a handful for the Highlanders

But the presence of two fetchers in the Hurricanes’ starting XV will certainly worry the Highlanders tonight.

Reed Prinsep has dropped to the bench, meaning Savea will suit up in the position where he started seven games for Wellington under Chris Boyd straight out of Rongotai College in 2012.

He has the skillset to cope and, with the under-rated Callum Gibbins slotting into the openside role, the Hurricanes should beat the visitors to the breakdown punch, though Highlanders No 6 Elliot Dixon may have a different view on that.

“Last week we got carried away in a very physical game in trying to get caught up in the rucks, so we need cool heads,” he adds, hinting that the Hurricanes allowed the Chiefs to get into their heads somewhat.

Hurricanes coach Boyd does not, naturally, see the Savea shift as an issue.

“I was keen to give Callum a go.

“I though Reed played particularly well in the last couple of games. He is probably, at this stage, more closely aligned to Brad (Shields) as a hard-working, physical No 6, so we are looking for something slightly different in our combination,” said Boyd.

The Hurricanes should be favourites to increase the head to head ledger to 16-13 in their favour. Last season, the franchises split their two games, home and away.

Gatland bulks up Lions staff Neil Jenkins and Graham Rowntree have been added to Warren Gatland’s British and Irish Lions coaching team for this summer’s tour of New Zealand.

Both were on the Lions coaching team in 2009 in South Africa and for the victorious tour of Australia four years ago, the latter under Gatland, and have been added to the trio of Steve Borthwick, Andy Farrell and Rob Howley who were named in December.

Former Wales five-eighth Jenkins toured as a Lions player in 1997, when he started all three tests at fullback, and 2001.

Ex-England loose-head prop Rowntree toured as a player in 1997 and 2005, winning two test caps off the bench against New Zealand in 2005.

“We all know what Neil and Graham bring to the table – a huge amount of knowledge, experience and expertise

at club [level], international [level] and eight Lions tours between them,” Gatland said.

“They understand what it will take to win in New Zealand and to have them on board again is positive.

“I know Graham and Steve will complement each other, and Neil will give us valuable backs and skills support.

“Given the schedule, with two games a week, having six coaches will allow us to devote enough time to ensuring we are successful.”

Jenkins has been Wales skills coach since 2004 with a particular remit for goal-kicking.

“I am excited to be joining up with a very experienced, successful coaching team for what is going to be a huge challenge against the world champions,” said Jenkins.

The Ashburton Trust has signed back on as the naming rights sponsor of one of harness racing’s biggest days – the Harness Jewels – which will this year be held at the Ashburton Raceway on June 3.

The Ashburton Trotting Club were delighted to be able to announce the news yesterday afternoon after a period of uncertainty in which nobody was quite sure what was going to happen.

“We are delighted to have the Ashburton Trust back on board continuing their association with this iconic event,” Ashburton Trotting Club president Craig Harrison said.

“They’ve been with us since

2009 and to have that continued support is greatly appreciated.”

Held this year for the 11th time, the Harness Jewels began in Ashburton and sees more than 100 of the best standardbreds from Australia and New Zealand competing for more the $1.5 million in stakes in nine one-mile, speedbased, races.

With a huge economic impact on the region due to the thousands of people it attracts to the region, the decision by the Ashburton Trust to continue its association is a logical one.

The Ashburton Trotting Club is exploring a number of new ideas they are hoping to bring to the occasion, including a revamp of the Friday night function.

Tickets are on sale for the day

with three package options available.

The first is for the main marquee which is located next to the birdcage with prime viewing and food and beverages available, as well as reserved seating and an MC and big screen.

Priced at $220 per person or $2000 a table, tickets are selling fast for the marquee with only a third still available.

The Parade Ring Marquee which is situated down in the car park is priced at $100 per person or $1000 per table and the third option is the Lindauer Luncheon which is priced at $80 per person.

Tickets can be obtained through the Ashburton Racing Centre or via the Harness Racing New Zealand website.

After being rained out last weekend, Mid Canterbury cricket supremacy is back in the limelight with the final of the Muirhead Rosebowl on the Ashburton Oval this afternoon. Season heavyweights, Allenton, who have every major trophy locked away for the season so far will be looking to add the final piece when they tackle Coldstream in what should be an enthralling match. ‘I’ve done my dash’

Mid Canterbury cricket has lost one of its most loyal servants of recent years with Bevan Ravenscroft announcing his retirement from representative cricket.

A prominent figure on the region’s cricket pitches for more than a decade, Ravenscroft retirement marks the end of a run in the side that has last 50 matches including a stint at the helm of the side.

“I’ve enjoyed it, but I think I’ve done my dash,” Ravenscroft said.

“Playing 50 games is an achievement I’m quite proud of, but I’m at the point now where I think I have had enough.

“So it’s time to call it while I still have the opportunity to do so.”

Ravenscroft’s departure will be a blow for the Mid Canterbury side due to his seniority and experience.

His wickets tally sees him sit eighth on the list of all-time wicket-takers for Mid Canterbury with best figures of 8-23 which he claimed against Southland in the 2013 and 2014 season.

He became just the second Mid Canterbury player to take eight wickets in an innings.

The only previous bowler to finish with eight wickets from a single innings was Wayne O’Grady in 1936-37, who took 8/59 against South Canterbury.

There are three bowlers who have taken nine, including Brian Sampson twice.

Sampson took 9/34 in 1965-66 against the West Coast and then had 9/75 against North Canterbury in 1978-79.

Ken Butler had 9/40 in 1967-68 against the West Coast and Bruce White had 9/62 in 1969-70 against North Canterbury.

On four occasions, Ravenscroft claimed five-wicket hauls and once he took 10 wickets in a match.

Renowned for his prowess with the ball, Ravenscroft was more than capable with the bat, although batting lower in the order meant his time in the middle was often restricted.

He claimed exactly 500 runs with a highest score of 64 not out against Otago Country his best total in 2013 and 2014.

South Africa will begin today at 349 for nine, a far cry from their parlous 104 for six at lunch yesterday when New Zealand were firmly in charge.

Instead they’ll start with a lead of 81 and still one wicket standing, with Vernon Philander on 36 and No 11 Morne Morkel on 31.

The pair have added 47, equal to the South African 10th wicket record against New Zealand, set in Port Elizabeth in 1962 by Jack McGlew and Harry Bromfield.

Meech the quiet achiever Michelle Payne was thrust into the spotlight care of her 2015 Melbourne Cup victory aboard outsider Prince Of Penzance.

The first female to ride the winner of Australia’s most iconic race, Payne is now one of racing’s most publicly-recognised figures.

But arguably the best female jockey in Australia over a long period has been the softly spoken Kiwi, Linda Meech.

Famously described by Black Caviar’s now retired trainer Peter Moody as ‘the best horse in my stable’, the hard-working rider has certainly made her name across the Tasman.

Four times Meech has ridden a century of winners in a season – she kicked home a career best 111 in 2008-09 – and twice she has won the Victorian country premiership.

big stage last Saturday when the self-proclaimed “bush jockey” guided the Peter Morgan-trained Sircconi to victory in the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes at Flemington.

It is a long way from her beginnings when she had about 30 rides while apprenticed to Janice Webster in Wanganui. But there was never any doubt in Meech’s mind as to what her career path would be.

“I always wanted to be a jockey, even before I went to primary school,” she said.

In 1998, the now 36-year-old travelled to Australia with some horses for trainer Kevin ‘Dummy’ Myers and never returned.

“It was better money over here and more opportunities than I had in New Zealand with racing every day,” she recalled from her Victorian base this week.

Linda Meech Meech said she was lucky to be taken on as an apprentice by trainer Terry O’Sullivan and she worked hard riding at meetings around country Victoria.

No trainer provided Meech with more winners than Peter Moody – 246 to be precise – but

A week prior, Meech had been enjoying racing of a slightly less highbrow nature, returning to her native New Zealand to ride at the Castlepoint Beach races.

“It was one of those things I always wanted to do,” she said.

“I rode for Kevin Myers, but I couldn’t win the Castlepoint Cup, I got beaten.

“I’d like to go back but I don’t know if Dummy would put me on again!”

Wool market improves at double auction

By Tina Morrison New Zealand’s wool market picked up at the latest weekly auctions across the North and South islands this week.

Compared with the last double auction a fortnight ago, the average price for 30-micron lamb wool rose 25 cents to $4.25 a kilogram, while the average price for 35-micron crossbred wool increased 20 cents to $4.13/kg, according to AgriHQ. Bucking the trend, fine crossbred wool slipped 9 cents to $4.15/kg.

Prices in the North Island had generally increased, while South Island prices were weaker, bringing prices for comparable wool types to similar levels in both islands, AgriHQ said.

Market conditions have been less buoyant during this year’s main shearing season, amid lack-

lustre demand from China, New Zealand’s largest export market, and that’s seen some woolgrowers hold back their bales from auction.

Some 17,978 bales were offered at Thursday’s double sale, with 82 per cent sold, according to New Zealand Wool Services International.

That compares with an 89 per cent clearance rate for the 15,209 bales offered at the last double

auction.

The next wool auction on March 23 will include about 7900 bales from the South Island.

s we move into March, political attention is likely to shift from the United States to Europe. Economically, however, the United States should remain a focus.

The potential passage of legislation lowering United States corporate taxes and proposed broader adjustment taxes, is far more important than any border wall and is at the heart of kickstarting investment activity in the United States. It also has implications for inflation and the United States dollar.

The United States Federal Reserve is also now picked to raise the Federal Funds rate, with the market now pricing in a 90 per cent probability of this occurring following President Trump’s recent speech to the United States Congress. We are still talking very accommodative levels of interest rates, but higher inflationary pressures caused by proposed fiscal measures are likely to result in higher long-term interest rates.

Global growth still in robust health Even before Trump’s “Make America great again” pledge, United States manufacturing was doing well and manufacturing data globally has also been improving.

In the United States, fiscal policy implementation is now required to reinforce the positive sentiment and drive further gains.

In Europe, accommodative monetary policy remains the main economic driver and is at last delivering.

Manufacturing growth in January was the best monthly gain since April 2011. This was accompanied by the best employment gains in nine years, as hiring accelerated in both the manufacturing and services sectors, driven by a sustained growth in new orders.

Japan’s manufacturing sector also grew in January at its sharpest rate in three years.

Equity markets are forward looking Improving global growth has been reflected in very healthy returns from equities over the last quarter, with the implications of President Trump’s fiscal expansionary policies further emboldening investors.

Forward earnings expectations have lifted, with some of the benefits of tax cuts and a reduced regulatory burden being key drivers. Sectors that have benefited have included financials, industrials and the energy sector.

In Australasia, Australian equities outperformed New Zealand over the last quarter.

Australia has benefited from the rebound in the resources and financials sectors, while New Zealand’s market is still regarded as dominated by companies that are considered to be interest rate proxies.

These companies are less at-

tractive in a rising interest rate environment.

The reporting season in New Zealand also disappointed as cyclicals dominated downgrades at the operating earnings line.

New Zealand inflation picks up but RBNZ expected to remain on-hold While it is now likely that the United States Federal Reserve could raise rates as early as this month, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand is still expected to keep interest rates on hold.

This is reinforced by the current Governor (stepping aside in September 2017) and the Bank consistently reiterating that no move is expected before 2019.

In addition, while New Zealand’s core inflation rate has picked up, it is not expected to reach its 2.0 per cent target until late 2018.

New Zealand’s longer-term interest rates however, are 90 per cent correlated to United States interest rates. These are therefore likely to be driven by the United States outlook.

Accordingly, the change in interest rates over the past three months is expected to reflect a pause, rather than indicate a change in the outlook for higher longer-term interest rates in a year’s time.

Funding needed to deal with youth thugs Michelle Nelson

I

n the midst of a youth crime wave, we have to question the funding cut backs and lack of resources which has allowed a situation such as this to blossom in small-town Ashburton.

For the past 18 months a small group of young offenders have been breaking into vehicles and businesses, shoplifting and stealing from private properties.

More recently the group has grown in numbers and started sporting gang colours. They have also upped the ante, engaging in antisocial behaviour, brawling and intimidating members of the public. Last weekend three of them graduated to car theft and embarked on a crime spree in Christchurch, which only culminated when police deployed road spikes in the Rakaia district.

While police numbers are now back up to approved levels, the current position is unprecedented, escalating and outstripping resources.

Wherever possible police ensure these offenders are held accountable in the Youth Court, however, there are currently no programmes available in Ashburton to refer them to. Youth offenders cannot be managed alongside adult offenders, therefore community work parties are not an option.

Safer Ashburton has applied for government funding to administer alternative programmes, but there is no guarantee the bid will be successful – because it is competing with many other agencies in a shrinking funding pool.

Talbot Security has picked up the tab for assisting to keep the town safe from marauding youth, however this service is outside the company’s scope. As a private business, it earns a crust from clients who pay for their properties and businesses to be monitored, not to deal with groups of thugs roaming the streets.

Perhaps a reshuffle within the council budget to pay for additional security monitoring is necessary, at least in the interim.

Councillors recently approved the mayor’s request for $65K to engage a personal assistant – surely the chaos these young wannabe gangsters is creating is equally, if not more important, right now.

Or do we need start running cake stalls to fundraise for the resources required to deal with this very real problem in our community?

English breaks Key promise J

ohn Key’s adamantine promise never to change the age of the pension entitlement while he was in office, has been speedily broken by his successor.

Bill English has solemnly decided to raise that age, citing all sorts of “good reasons”, foremost among them that we are all now living so much longer.

However, he seems to be in no rush to bring in this significant change in National policy, talking of the distant year, 2037, as being his favoured start date.

Thereafter, there will be incremental age rises towards 67-year-old target.

Such a decision is certainly a major rock thrown into this year’s election pool, destined to cause waves of controversy rather than ripples of mere bewilderment.

Winston Peters, having declared only 24 hours earlier, that on no account would he countenance any suggestion of raising the age and it’s being a non-negotiable element in NZ First policy, the PM is tampering with this positively holy grail.

Thus, what had seemed a likely link between National and NZ First in the next parliament, to the mutual advantage of both, is, apparently, no more.

National will have to look seriously and swiftly for another coalition partner from a very small field of possible candidates.

EYE ON POLITICS

The chances of it winning an overall majority is as unlikely as ever, especially with votewinner, John Key, gone.

The Maori Party, which has obligingly propped up National these past few years – significantly tweaking its tail in the process – may well find itself no longer in an electoral position to do so, post September 23.

Labour is about to make a serious attempt to get “its” seats back, so carelessly lost to the Maori Party over recent times.

Now that “high-flying” and telegenic Jacinda Ardern is so firmly on board, her electoral appeal may be irresistible. So if not the Maori Party, who?

Long-term supporter, the one-man, United Future Party, Peter Dunne, may be lost to National if he loses in Ohariu, although Act one-man band, David Seymour, may well do what he can to help the Nats.

The “arrangement” in Epsom will be re-activated as usual.

Labour and Greens, meanwhile, will be busy setting up a coalition of their own.

In other words, National may find itself exposed, lonely and

shattered on that same morning.

With NZ First and Labour so utterly wedded to keeping the current age of pension entitlement where it now is, one has to wonder why Mr English has taken this remarkable step, maybe snatching defeat from the assumed jaws of victory.

Political pundits everywhere are scratching their furrowed brows to find an explanation for this table-turning event.

Why has champion shearer, Mr English, decided to cut off his nose to spite his face? Is it something to do with that political standby of our times, sustainability?

Is the PM somehow showing his concern for the environment and its cost to sustain and implying the needs of pensioners are likely to be less pressing as we move into a robot-driven future?

As public-spirited as such an argument might seem, it is unlikely to cut much ice with those of the “right” age now, who are going to be unavoidably affected by any change in pension legislation even at as far distant a date as 2037.

No, Mr English seems to have succumbed to pressures unknown which have convinced him that 65 – whatever the generation affected – is unsustainable and we need to get used to it.

The self-chosen demise of National’s most popular leader

ever, John Key, and now the bleak prospect – as many will see it – of delayed pensions, may well have National fighting to keep afloat in six months’ time.

On top of all that, there is now the potent “Jacinda” factor at work. How long will it be before Jacinda and Andrew swap places on the “most preferred prime minister” chart?

Meanwhile, in America, Donald Trump has only about 40 of his much-trumpeted (sorry) “first 100 days” left.

Many of his promised decisions in that time remain to be gazetted, not least his threat/ promise to take the United States out of the Paris agreement on climate change, agreed to by over 200 nations 18 months ago.

His minister involved, Scott Pruitt, is a man-made, climatechange denier, despite the opposite being the official policy of the department he now heads.

Another of Mr Trump’s “Alice in Wonderland” appointments, in other words. More such contradictions ahead; sad, so sad.

And now he is to ask the White House media corps – whom he has reviled and insulted for weeks – how best to spend his $578,000/pa salary, which he proposes to make available to charity. Odd, so odd.

Did Trump really accuse President Obama of tapping his phones or did he actually mean something else? Curious, so curious.

and “you should learn one new thing a day” are true and good advice with which to face life.

Now you might say I couldn’t study or can’t afford to undertake tertiary studies, but there are so many other ways we can learn.

It might be through online study, it might be attending a day or night weekend course in something that interests you, thereby stretching the mind or helping you learn a new skill.

One thing that is sadly missing from this district is what was once termed night classes.

The Methven Summer School does an excellent job in providing this type of learning for a week.

When I was minister at St Andrew’s in Levin, our church ran these types of class in conjunction with the secondary school and there was a growing demand for such learning opportunities.

Just as Jesus was keen to sit at the feet of the masters, to soak in the knowledge, pick up skills, and

expand his mind learning new things, so should we.

I encourage you take up some education opportunities this year, whether it be school studies, tertiary education, or learning pottery, golf, photography, Te Reo. It doesn’t matter what it is, follow your passion and stimulate the mind.

I’m sorry, Pink Floyd got it wrong, we do need education.

We need to continue, regardless of our age, expanding our minds and keeping the brain active for as long as we can.

grew up listening to groups like Pink Floyd with their song We Don’t Need No Education, a very untrue statement.

We Presbyterians have a strong focus and emphasis on education.

We founded Otago University 149 years ago and founded 12 currently running church schools throughout New Zealand.

In training our ministers we place a strong emphasis on learning, be it through internships or formal theological studies.

Last year marked 200 years since the opening of the first school in New Zealand, which was run by the church, just not the Presbyterian Church.

This weekend St Andrew’s School in Christchurch, where a number of people from Ashburton have been educated, marks its 100th anniversary.

I remember taking a graduation service for a very good friend.

It was exciting, because normally at graduations you get to have only a very small number of family or friends, but this time as they couldn’t attend their graduation as they were out of town at a university studying, I conducted a service for them.

This person was in the midyears of life and I remember saying to them and those gathered for the service that it was exciting to see a number of mature people undertaking all kinds of interesting studies.

As I am sure you all know the sayings “you never stop learning”

Free after 32 years of jail Andrew Leander Wilson, a broad smile on his face and no bitterness in his heart, clasped hands with his family on his first day of freedom Thursday after spending 32 years in prison for a murder he denied committing.

Wilson, 62, was released from the Los Angeles County Men’s Central Jail downtown into a sea of cameras and cheers and applause from university law students who worked to free him.

“This is unbelievable. This is unbelievable,” Wilson said.

Wilson maintained his innocence since his arrest in 1984 for the stabbing death of Christopher Hanson, 21, in Los Angeles.

A day earlier, Superior Court Judge Laura Priver ordered Wilson released after prosecutors conceded he did not get a fair trial.

Wilson said his 96-year-old mother, Margie Davis, who lives in St. Louis, was his fiercest advocate.

“My mother was the backbone,” Wilson said. “She was a 96-year-old pit bull.”

He plans to go to St Louis to visit her as soon as he can, and his mother says she can’t believe she’s going to see him after three decades.

“I prayed for what I thought was the impossible,” Davis told KABC-TV by phone. “I prayed for his release. And evidently it wasn’t impossible. It’s been granted me.”

Paula Mitchell, Wilson’s lawyer, said before the hearing that numerous due-process violations recently came to light that showed Wilson did not receive a fair trial.

She pointed particularly to a weeks-long delay before police began canvassing for suspects with Hanson’s girlfriend, Saladena Bishop,

French shooting leaves 14 wounded A 16-year-old student who had troubled relations with his peers opened fire at a high school in southern France on Thursday, wounding three other students and the principal who tried to intervene, officials said.

Police moved into the Alexis de Tocqueville school in the town of Grasse and quickly arrested the still-armed suspect, identified by the Interior Ministry spokesman as Killian Barbey.

The government minister for victims’ affairs, Juliette Meadel, told BFM television there were 4 people shot – three students and the high school principal – and 10 other victims.

The Grasse prosecutor said some of the victims were suffering from “emotional shock.” None of the injuries was considered life threatening.

Prosecutor Fabienne Atzori said the young man – armed with a rifle, several pistols and a small grenade – entered a classroom then left, “not finding the person or people he was searching for.”

“The motivation of the stu-

dent appears linked to bad relations with other students in this high school in which it appears he had some difficulty integrating,” Atzori said.

She said there was no reason to suspect the shootings were terrorism-related, “whatever the origin of the terrorist enterprise.” A national police official said earlier there did not appear to be any other suspects.

Investigators were now trying to find out where did the suspect get the arms, she said.

Officials variously gave 16 and 17 as the age of the suspect. His Facebook page indicates he is 16.

After the suspect started shooting, students alerted the principle, who was wounded while “courageously” intervening, the prosecutor said.

Some students only discovered shrapnel in their bodies once home, she said.

The suspect’s Facebook is filled with violent or gory images.

During the attack, some students hid at the school and others were evacuated.

area and worried residents gathered outside in the town, which is 40 kilometres from the southern city of Nice, site of last year’s Bastille Day terror attack that killed 86 people.

The president of the region, Christian Estrosi, said the principal suffered an arm wound and told him that after being alerted to the presence of the armed student, “he tried to interpose ... to try to calm him, and unfortunately he didn’t succeed.”

A Galveston County grand jury indicted Andres Arturo Villagomez, 21, and girlfriend Karinthya Sanchez Romero, 22, on charges arising from the suicide of Brandy Vela, Villagomez’s ex-girlfriend. The 18-year-old woman shot herself in the chest and died in front of her horrified family at their home in Texas City. The Galveston couple is accused of actions that investigators say drove Vela to take her own life.

Romero is charged with stalking and online impersonation, felonies punishable by two to 10 years in prison. Romero also is accused of setting up fake Facebook pages in Brandy Vela’s name.

The indictment charges Villagomez with unlawful disclosure or promotion of intimate visual material.

Brandy Vela’s final cellphone text message to her family was: “I love you so much just remember that please and I’m so sorry for everything.”

Sturgeon adamant on vote Scotland’s first minister is “determined” to have a second independence referendum despite British Prime Minister Theresa May vowing to block one.

Nicola Sturgeon said a move to stop a second referendum would be a “democratic outrage” after Downing Street announced it would reject calls for another vote before Brexit.

May’s position was confirmed

by Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson, who said Sturgeon’s timetable for a referendum – between autumn 2018 and spring 2019 – would be “rejected conclusively”.

Sturgeon wants a referendum to coincide with the end of Brexit talks, when she says the terms of the UK’s deal to leave the EU will become clear.

“I am determined that I will have one on my timescale because the will of the Scottish Parliament will be respected,” Sturgeon told BBC Scotland.

That would be a democratic outrage.”

But in an interview for ITV news, May said: “Right now we should be working together, not pulling apart.

“We should be working together to get that right deal for Scotland, that right deal for the UK, as I say that’s my job as prime minister and so for that reason I say to the SNP: now is not the time.”

A spokesman said May hoped the Scottish parliament would back away from staging a vote.

The call for an independence referendum comes just two-anda-half years after Scots voted to keep the union.

Dozen die in wide-scale Peruvian flooding Muddy water spilled onto streets and into homes on Wednesday in a new round of unusually heavy rains that has killed at least a dozen people in Peru and now threatens flooding in the capital.

The intense rains and mudslides over the past three days have wrought havoc around the Andean nation and caught residents in Lima, a desert city of 10 million where it almost never rains, by surprise.

In one of the more dramatic incidents, stunned residents

watched and took out cellphone cameras as a woman escaped after being swept into an avalanche of mud, wood debris and farm animals about 53 kilometres south of downtown Lima.

Evangelina Chamorro, 32, had just dropped her two daughters at school and was feeding her pigs alongside her husband when they were pulled into a landslide.

Armando Rivera, Chamorro’s husband, told RPP radio they climbed a tree but the trunk broke. They held on to each other’s hands but

Chamorro eventually lost his grip and got separated.

She emerged near a bridge, lifting herself from a current of wooden planks and walking toward the shore covered head to toe in mud.

Chamorro collapsed as she reached land and was quickly carried by several men to an ambulance. She sustained only minor injuries.

Authorities said they expect the rains caused by El Nino, which generates a warming of surface

waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean, to continue for another two weeks. Thus far, officials say a total of 62 people have died and 12,000 homes have been destroyed in storms this year.

In Lima, the swelling Huaycoloro river swept away two trucks and threatened to destroy a bridge.

Blood test to detect autism developed

Qld prawn test area expanded

Scientists in the US have developed a blood test that has the potential to accurately detect autism in babies.

Researchers at New York’s Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute claim 96 per cent of children on the autism spectrum would be picked up through the test.

If proven accurate in further trials, it could lead to vital early intervention for children diagnosed on the autism spectrum.

The test measures the level of 24 proteins that have been linked to autism.

It was found five of the proteins, when in the right combination, seemed most predictive of the condition.

The researchers made the discovery by comparing blood samples taken from 83 autistic children, aged 3 to 10, with normal functioning children.

While the combination was present in 97.6 per cent, it was absent in 96.1 per cent of 76 nor-

mal children, according to the study published in the journal PLOS Computational Biology.

“This level of accuracy for classification as well as severity prediction far exceeds any other approach in this field and is a strong indicator that the metabolites under consideration are strongly correlated with an ASD diagnosis,” the authors wrote.

An estimated one in 100 people has autism, that equates to about 230,000 Australians.

Children are currently diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) by a trained clinical psychologist through observing behaviours. This can often be a drawn out process and lead to a delay in diagnosis.

Recent analysis of Medicare data revealed the average age of diagnosis in Australia is just before a child’s sixth birthday, even though ASD can be reliably detected at two years of age.

Authorities plan to test prawn farms all the way up the Queensland coastline in their fight against the highly contagious white spot disease, the state’s chief biosecurity officer said.

The state government placed an immediate ban on the removal of uncooked prawns and other crustaceans from parts of the state’s southeast on Thursday.

It followed the detection of 31 prawns infected with the virus in Moreton Bay near the Redcliffe Peninsula and Deception Bay, north of Brisbane.

Samples have already been drawn from 3000 prawns and there are plans to test along the state’s coastline to see if the disease has taken root anywhere else, Dr Jim Thompson said yesterday.

The body of an 11-year-old boy who was sucked into a storm water drain in the NSW Illawarra region has been recovered in a nearby creek bed. Ryan Teasdale was last seen riding a bodyboard with his brother and friends in Riley Park in Unanderra on Thursday afternoon as torrential rain swept through the area. His body was found after 11am yesterday at a creek bed at the end of a stormwater drain about 500 metres from the park. “The family of the boy have been informed, and the family ask that their privacy be respected,” Superintendent Zoran Dzevlan told reporters.

Parents remanded The Brisbane mother and father accused of murdering their toddler in 2007 have appeared briefly in court. Dina Colleen Bond, 43, and Shane Arthur Simpson, 49, were charged on Thursday over the death of 22-month-old Baden Bond, who was allegedly killed between March 26 and May 17 at Woodridge. Their arrest came soon after an appeal for information by police to find the missing child, who would be 12 by now. A ridge over the country is weakening, allowing a cold front to sweep northwards across the South Island this morning and onto North Island this afternoon.

Another ridge spreads onto the lower South Island by midday. The ridge shifts to the North Island on Monday and stays there until Wednesday.
