Recent drug busts in Christchurch could have a significant impact on the supply and use of narcotics in Mid Canterbury. Local police say raids on manufacturers of synthetic cannabis will have a flow-on effect in the district which will go some way to reducing drugrelated offending. Canterbury police executed seven search warrants at various locations around Christchurch on Tuesday as part of Operation Mamba. They seized cash, chemicals in liquid and powder form, and unidentified plant material. Officer in charge of Ashburton station Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said any raids in Canterbury would
slow down the supply of drugs locally. “It’s no different than if there’s a big drugs bust or something with methamphetamine in Auckland,” he said. “That certainly helps dry up the supply in other parts of the country.” Mr Banfield said about half of the drugs that ended up in Mid Canterbury were supplied from outside the district while the other half were sourced locally. “We know that domestically there was a lot of stuff being brought down from the North Island, because until last year there was limited search capabilities for police at airports, other than for international travel,” he said. He believed those involved in criminal activity and the drug trade saw
that as a loophole as they could transport drugs on domestic flights. “That made it hard for police because we had to have confirmed information before we could get a warrant,” he said. Reducing drug-related offending has been a big focus for Mid Canterbury police, with last year’s Operation Webster culminating in a series of raids that resulted in 13 arrests. More recently a nationwide drug operation titled Operation Jasmine saw 2829 cannabis plants seized in Canterbury, with 80 per cent of those recovered from the Mid/South Canterbury area.
