Road toll plan falls short – MP By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
A new strategy has been proposed by the Government to reduce the nation’s road toll by 40 per cent within the next decade and local reaction to it has been mixed. The strategy, named Road to Zero, was released for consultation to the public on Wednesday, and while some local emergency services are welcoming a more preventative approach to road safety, a local MP believes not enough is being done. The broad-spanning strategy looks to focus on roads, drivers, vehicles, policing and speed cameras. Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon said everyone agrees with the intent of re-

ducing the road toll, but that simply reducing speed limits will not be the right way to get there. “International evidence and the new roads that have been built in New Zealand in the last decade show that the quality of roads has a huge bearing on their safety,” he said. “The four-lane Waikato Expressway and Tauranga Eastern Link roads are now two of the safest in the country. “Ashburton to Christchurch is the second most dangerous stretch of highway in the country for fatal crashes and serious injuries, and yet the Government’s programme to reduce road accidents doesn’t mention it at all.” Local firefighters, who are often the first on the scene of fatal accidents, have
welcomed the new strategy as Fire and Emergency New Zealand itself looks to become more proactive in reducing the road toll. “The end result is that us and the (St John) ambos tend to be bottom of the cliff stuff tidying up the aftermath, but if we can minimise it before it happens that is a good thing,” Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Alan Burgess said. Vehicle safety standards are another thing that are set to be assessed under the new strategy.
