Drink drivers on notice An Ashburton engineer has become the first person in the Ashburton District Court to be sentenced to an alcohol interlock device after a drink driving offence under new laws.

James Finlay Morton, blew 936mcg after police stopped him while driving on the Rakaia highway on June 3. He said he had been drinking with friends and was on his way home; the legal limit is 250mcg.

New laws that came into force this month mean alcohol interlock devices are mandatory for drink drivers who

blow over 800mcg (or 160mg/100ml for blood) for their first offence, or drink drivers who record a second offence in five years of the first.

Drivers sentenced to alcohol interlock devices must blow into the device to start their vehicles. If alcohol is detected, the vehicle won’t start.

Judge Joanna Maze told Morton on Monday he was the first drink drive offender in the Ashburton court to be sentenced to an alcohol interlock device.

“You have previous convictions for

speeding, but no previous for drink driving, however, because of the level of the reading at 936 that is considered to be within the realms of the mandatory alcohol interlock sentence.”

She convicted him and said the cost of the device and compliance could be around $3000, a significant penalty in itself.

Big demand expected for devices A company installing court-ordered alcohol interlock devices is planning to set up an Ashburton service centre to cope with expected demand.

Smart Start Interlocks is one of two Government-approved providers of the interlock devices, which judges can impose on repeat drink drivers or first offenders who blow more than 800mcg.

The driver must blow into the device, programmed for zero alcohol, to start the vehicle.

Smart Start general manager Gavin Foster said the company currently had a presence in Timaru but was in the process of setting up an Ashburton service centre.

New legislation that came into effect on July 1 makes interlock devices mandatory for some offenders.

Foster said the company had been installing interlock devices since 2012 and the new legislation was expected to result in more demand as the Government cracked down on drink drivers.

The installation is typically carried out by auto electricians and Foster said the work involved wiring in the unit, maintaining it and downloading data at regular intervals.

Interlocks are typically fitted for 12 months and can only be removed if there have been no recorded violations during the previous six months; or if there have been no recorded viola-

tions during the previous three months and the offender had completed a successful drug and alcohol assessment.

Application fees, installation fees and device rental for the 12-month period could be between $2500 and $3000.

Drink drivers who have passed the interlock stage are then able to apply for a zero alcohol licence for three years before applying to reinstate their standard licence.

Foster said he had seen recidivist drink drivers change their ways.

“With the few we have installed since 2012, it is amazing seeing the change in people’s behaviour in 12 months and these are people with bad habits that repeatedly drink and drive.”

He said data downloads showed how many times the driver had attempted to start the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

“It forces them to start thinking ahead and make plans.

They can drink or they can drive, but they can’t do both together.”

Foster said the interlock devices were used successfully overseas but sadly there was potentially a big market in New Zealand.

He predicted the Ashburton centre would be engaging with around 50 interlock drivers a month as the legislation kicked in.

Numbers on the rise at 206 Club

Ashburton’s long-running 206 Club is increasing in popularity and seeking more volunteers.

Operated by Age Concern Ashburton for more than 20 years, the club is held Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Ashburton Seniors Centre.

Age Concern’s director of day services Adair Pethig said visitor numbers generally hovered around up to 50 men and women

per week, but this had recently increased to about 56.

The group is for 60s and over.

“It’s called the 206 Club because it’s at 206 Cameron Street, but it’s very much a social group, for people who are often home alone, and it’s very much a social opportunity for them to come out,” Pethig said.

The 206 Club day begins at 10am for morning tea, then an activity is held, such as a singalong to the piano, or a quiz. Sometimes guest speakers are hosted, and

recently Ashburton’s new top cop Phil Dean talked to members.

At 11am there is a game of housie, and at midday a two-course meal is served. This is followed by cards and board games, then afternoon tea at 2pm.

Pethig said it would be good to have a few more volunteers on hand to both help with activities during the day, and also volunteer cooks. Anyone wanting to help out can phone Age Concern, 3086817.

Change puts drink drivers on notice From P1 Morton was also disqualified from driving for three months, at the end of which time he can apply for an alcohol interlock licence.

The device would be fitted to his vehicle for 12 months, after which it could be removed and Morton could apply for a zero alcohol licence that would last three years.

Eventually he could apply to have his licence reinstated.

Police prosecutor sergeant Ian Howard said if Morton did not apply for an alcohol interlock licence then he would be treated as a disqualified driver if he got behind the wheel.

Morton had refused free legal advice available from a duty solicitor and had pleaded guilty.

Judge Maze said subsidies were available to cover the cost of the alcohol interlock device, depending

on an offender’s income.

The New Zealand Transport Agency has two approved interlock providers with a network of installers around the country. Drink driver offenders in Ashburton must deal with a Timaru installer.

Introducing alcohol interlocks and zero alcohol licences is part of NZTA’s Safer Journeys road safety strategy and aims to reduce the impact of drink driving.

Thirteen rescue chopper calls to skifield so far this season

It’s just over five weeks since Mt Hutt declared their skifield open, but the fun on the snow has not been without a fair a number of slips, slides and injuries.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter has already made 13 visits to the mountain this season to rescue injured snowboarders and skiers.

According to data from the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue, that means that Mt Hutt is already past halfway to its 2017 total of 25 Westpac helicopter rescue missions.

Comparatively, there has only been one rescue mission to Porters Ski Area and three to all other skifields in the Canterbury region.

Mt Hutt Ski Area Manager James McKenzie said the number of helicopter call-outs could vary depending on the nature of injuries and whether an ambulance or helicopter was deemed more appropriate.

However the high number of call-outs could likely be a reflection of more people on the mountain, he said, with visitor numbers up 25 per cent on last year.

The majority of injuries were caused by falls.

McKenzie said the best way to prevent injury is to follow the Snow Code, which was developed by the New Zealand ski industry in conjunction with ACC and is available online and at skifields.

It covers ways for skiers and snowboarders to “stay protected” like wearing a helmet, obeying signs and closures and resting when tired as well as ways to know their limits, like riding to their ability, being aware of the conditions and taking a lesson.

McKenzie said people visiting Mt Hutt also need to be aware that some chairlifts only access more difficult terrain.

In the code, skiers and snowboarders are also advised to find their space on the slopes by looking ahead, stopping where they can be seen and giving others room.

McKenzie said it is vital to be considerate and give way to anyone further down the mountain.

Should an injury occur, Patrol Medical Teams are also present on the mountain, comprised of emergency doctors, registered nurses and sports physiotherapists.

They have since visited weekly and will be here again sometime this week. Yesterday staff were unable to get figures on how many households had been spotted with smoking chimneys due to database issues.

Inventors bring Wiggly Bots to life

Dozens of inventors descended on the Ashburton Museum yesterday to make magic from a coffee cup and pegs.

The museum held a Wiggly Bot making masterclass for the school holidays.

Visitor programmes co-ordinator Max Reeves explained that the idea was to create a little robot with felt tip markers on the bottom.

If placed on a piece of paper and switched on, it would buzz around and sketch a pattern.

Just half an hour into the session, robots of the bejewelled and googly eye variety were already being produced and Reeves said the participants were killin’ it.

The museum are also among four council-owned venues offering the Burty Challenge, encouraging kids to get out and about in Ashburton.

Participants in the challenge can complete a mission to collect stamps at the Ashburton Museum, EA Networks Centre, Ashburton Library and Ashburton Domain, with all answers added to their Mid-Winter Burty Challenge Passport.

Driver caught travelling at 165km/h in thick fog A 17-year-old who was caught driving at 165km/h in thick fog on State Highway 1 at Orari has lost his licence for six months.

Morgan William Smith was clocked by police radar on June 16 in passing lanes where fog had reduced visibility to less than 150m.

Smith admitted a charge of driving at a dangerous speed this week when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court.

Judge Joanna Maze disqualified him from driving for six months and fined him $400, plus $130 court costs.

She said that at just 17 years of age, he had limited road experience to call on had he encountered a problem.

Police sergeant Ian Howard said there was another vehicle in the passing lanes but Smith had been a danger to all other road users and would have had no time to react to a hazard.

He told the officer who caught him that it was a dumb and stupid thing to do.

Duty solicitor Marilyn Gilchrist said Smith had agreed to do a defensive driving course and would apply for a limited licence so he could continue to work.

An Omarama woman who blew 1391mcg after being stopped on West Street admitted a charge of drink driving.

Police said Louise Kate Egan was stopped after her car was observed weaving in its lane about 3.20pm on June 17. She said she had been drinking wine with a friend in Christchurch and was swerving because she had been texting.

Egan was remanded to October 1 for sentence so the judge could assess progress on steps she was making to address her alcohol addiction.

A 29-year-old woman who allowed an associate to use her Fa-

cebook page to sell a cellphone that was never delivered pleaded guilty to a charge of causing a loss by deception.

Police said Nicole Rountree allowed the associate to list an iPhone 6s on her Facebook marketplace last year and it was “sold” for $500. The buyer put the money into Rountree’s account and she withdrew it and gave it to the associate.

Simon Marshall Culbertson was fined $400 after admitting a charge of theft. He hired a car then tried to sell it on social media for $80,000.

Duty solicitor Roz Burnside said Culbertson, 26, had legally rented the car and extended the contract several times before not returning it, then trying to sell and trade it.

The vehicle had been returned to the rental company, which had incurred a loss of $500.

Culbertson was also ordered to make reparation of $500 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

A woman who assaulted the woman she had been told was in “personal contact” with her husband was sentenced to four months community detention, nine months supervision and ordered to pay $1000 in emotional harm to her victim.

Annastasis Te Ora Hita, 32, had admitted a charge of assault with intent to injure but her lawyer Carol Morgan said Hita, whose surname had been Peters for the past 10 years, had simply lost control after a series of stressful events.

Morgan said she had been told by the victim’s partner that “something was going on”, the farm where she worked was struggling with a biosecurity issue (mycoplasma bovis) and she had discovered she was pregnant. Three hundred calves that she was rearing were about to be culled, along with other dairy cattle.

She had gone to an Ashburton business to buy farm supplies, saw the other woman at her desk

and lost control, Morgan said. She then drove to the police station to advise them of her actions.

“It is an indication of her realising that she had stepped outside the bounds of acceptable behaviour and taken out her anger and frustration in relation to a very personal problem on this young lady.”

Hita had written the woman a sincere apology letter, Morgan said. Judge Maze said Hita had punched the woman five times in the face and pulled her to the floor, where she kicked her. The victim’s head had struck a table as she fell.

She said the stresses on Hita’s family could have been overwhelming but were not an excuse for her behaviour.

Samuel David McKenzie, 28, a freezing worker of Ashburton had been drinking bourbon and cola when police stopped him on May 29. He failed a breath screening test and later blew 495mcg.

He admitted a charge of drink driving and was remanded to August 27 for sentence. He has previous drink driving form.

Tony-Lee Nathan BergerSewell, 25, admitted seven charges including receiving five stolen new cellphones worth $6795. He was remanded to October 1 for sentencing.

The other charges related to possessing cannabis and meth pipes, driving while disqualified and receiving a stolen motor vehicle.

Police sergeant Ian Howard said the cellphones were part of stock in storage after Spark’s Ashburton business had to move from its store because of building code issues.

A consignment of phones had been stored securely at a staff member’s home, but the property was burgled and phones taken; Berger-Sewell received five.

In brief Hide farm, garden rubbish As spring approaches, Ashburton Forest and Bird member Val Clemens is reminding farmers and gardeners to put away twine after removing it from bales of straw and peastraw. Clemens said twine, alongside plastic or nylon from discarded rubbish such as fertiliser bags, can be picked up by birds to make their nests. Such material in nests could be harmful, as nesting birds and their young could get tangled in it. “I think it’s a terrible indictment on the world today, that birds pick up rubbish like that to build their nests,” Clemens said.

Dry July blamed Glass collected in kerbside bins over the past two weeks has dropped, which may or may not be due to Dry July. Ashburton District Council data for the first fortnight collection cycle in July shows a drop of 3860 kilograms on the previous two weeks. Just 30,310 kilograms of glass was collected from kerbside bins in Mid Canterbury, compared to 34,170 for the previous two weeks in June.

Dry July is a nationwide initiative which sees people give up alcohol for one month. Recycling data aside, feedback on the Guardian’s Facebook page suggests the initiative is not creating a huge number of Mid Canterbury success stories. The highest achievements reported included one woman “going really well” until her birthday, and another woman surviving eight days before her partner’s mid-winter work do.

Parking complaint An Ashburton District Council parking warden visit recently to Methven was in response to a complaint, and only routine visits can be expected in future.

Ashburton District Council environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle said the council received a complaint from a business operator concerned about tourists parking across their entrance way and blocking access.

“We visited and monitored the area, but there was no issue to address at that time and therefore no infringement issued,” Catchpowle said. “We routinely visit surrounding townships in response to such complaints and monitor the area accordingly.”

Pepper spray use deemed unnecessary Five years for drug dealing

By AngelA Woods A woman whose drug dealing was uncovered during an investigation related to a record 500kg meth bust in 2016 has been jailed for five years and five months.

Arna Iwi Odette Smith was sentenced in the Auckland High Court on six charges of possessing methamphetamine for supply and one representative charge of supplying methamphetamine.

Smith supplied more than a quarter of a kilogram of methamphetamine in the last quarter of 2016. She pleaded guilty in May 2017, five-and-a-half months after she was charged.

Justice Mathew Downs gave Smith discounts on a starting point of seven-and-a-half years for a guilty plea, the impact on her four children and attempts at rehabilitation.

Justice Downs noted that Smith used methamphetamine herself and had begun – but not finished – a rehabilitation programme.

“You describe using methamphetamine at least four or five times a week. Clearly, you have, or at least had, a drug problem.”

“On 2 June 2017, another judge granted you bail so you could complete a residential rehabilitation programme.

“Five days before the end of that programme, you breached bail by leaving the institution and associated programme. You were remanded in custody on 7 November 2017. The judge who did so told you, ‘you blew it’.”

“You sought bail again on 9 February 2018.

Bail was declined: there was insufficient confidence you would not revert to your habits.”

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found a police officer unjustifiably and unlawfully used pepper spray on an arrested man in a cell last year.

The intoxicated man had crashed his car on June 23 and was brought back to the station, but was aggressive towards officers who attempted to restrain him.

After the man was placed in the cell by eight officers, one went back in after noticing a pair of handcuffs on the floor and their leg was grabbed by the arrested man.

A second officer entered the cell and pepper sprayed the man in the face and he immediately let go of the leg.

The second officer accepted that it could have been possible to drag the first officer out of the cell, but maintained his use of pepper spray.

He stated that pulling the first officer out of the cell would have increased the risk of harm to those involved.

“I take a lot of pride in my decisionmaking and if I could go back I’d do the same thing. I still think even in hindsight I made the correct decision,” he said.

But authority chairman Judge Colin Doherty deemed that the officer’s use of pepper spray was unnecessary and was “an excessive use of force”.

“The officer was focused on subduing the man with the use of pepper spray, which came at the expense of good, sound, decision-making in accordance with police policy and best practice,” he said.

The authority reported that a lower level of force should have been applied before resorting to the use of pepper spray – some staff witnesses to the incident agreed.

Other staff members supported the second officer for using pepper spray on the basis that his action enabled officers to exit the cell safely without having to engage physically. – NZME

Exhibition proves popular

Midway through the Ashburton Society of Arts 54th Annual Exhibition, the array of works are still earning plenty of oohs and ahhs.

Last Friday marked one of the busiest days in Ashburton Art Gallery history, with 408 visitors pouring through the door to view the ceramics, jewellery, sculpture, paintings and photography on show as part of the exhibition.

An opening night and awards ceremony was held on July 2 and the gallery has since been welcoming votes for the People’s Choice Award, announced at the end of the month.

“We’ve had some really good comments and there’s plenty of red dots on numbers ... meaning they have been sold,” Ashburton Society of Arts spokesperson Mandy Casey said. “People are always quite keen

to vote for the People’s Choice once they’ve seen the exhibition.”

The exhibition includes over 400 works from local artists as well as eight guest artists.

More than $8000 worth of prizes were handed out to 16 winners on the opening night, with Methven’s Vashti Johnstone taking out the premier prize.

Today week the renowned artist in charge of judging the works will deliver a free floor talk about the exhibition.

John Badcock will be discussing the works he selected to take out the top awards and explaining what he thinks makes an award-winning artwork.

Also luring throngs to the gallery this month is a school holiday mug-making activity and an immersive, two and threedimensional exhibition called Snapdash!

The Ashburton Society of Arts 54th Annual Exhibition is open until July 27.

Council on hunt for architect The Ashburton District Council has begun seeking tenders for the appointment of an architect and lead designer for the town’s much anticipated library and administration building.

The successful applicant will be responsible for undertaking the architectural design of the new building, including specialist library and workplace planning advice, and architectural services. The role is expected to be confirmed early next month, with work commencing soon after.

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said she, fellow councilors and staff were excited to

have reached this important milestone.

“We welcome applications from appropriately resourced and experienced organisations to help bring this project into reality,” Favel said.

The tender documents for the architect and lead designer can be found online through Tenderlink https://www.tenderlink.com/notification/index.html. Applications close August 17.

Logic Group is now managing the total development of the project after the council announced in June that it had appointed the company as project manager.

Positive deterrent for drink drivers M

id Canterbury drink drivers have been put on notice this week with the first offender sentenced in the Ashburton District Court to fit an alcohol interlock device.

Following on from a change of legislation, which came into force at the beginning of the month, for drivers who record a second drink driving offence within five years of the first it is now mandatory that the device is installed.

Drivers who have the device fitted to their vehicle must first blow into the device before starting the vehicle and if the device detects alcohol, then the

vehicle won’t start.

While not a foolproof way to stop recidivist offenders from repeating history, the legislation should ensure that drivers at least think twice about the potential consequences if they were to hop behind the steering wheel after having been drinking.

And those who fall into that

category from our own district have well and truly been warned this week.

Our district court is full each sitting with drivers who have returned a positive breath test to alcohol and there is an alarming trend among them that it isn’t their first time visiting the local courts.

Now, if the offence is within five years of the most recent, they will face the introduction of the alcohol interlock device to their lives and it will come at a huge financial cost to themselves.

One of the best deterrents not to have the system fitted is that price.

At around $3000 – they don’t come cheap and with that money coming directly from the offender, there should be even more awareness from drivers about what they are doing – or at least you would hope so.

As it currently stands, there’s even more cost involved with the company assigned to the role of fitting the devices being based in Timaru although it would appear they will soon have an Ashburton base.

The comment that they were looking to set up something locally to cope with expected demand is quite concerning – underlining the fact that the Ashburton District may have

an issue with drink driving – a statement our District Court news would justify without doubt.

There’s no chance of this new system completely eradicating the chance of someone hopping behind the wheel of their vehicle after drinking, but even if it deters just a few people it will have been a positive result.

And as more and more of our repeat offenders find themselves facing the prospect of having the device installed on their vehicle the more likely it is that others will learn through their misfortunes.

And that’s got to be a positive result.

A sheepy encounter T

he year was 2016 and it was the morning of a balmy January day, driving in the rolling countryside above Tologa Bay. The cicadas were chirping, the Rhythm & Vines pass was still proudly around my wrist, and the gang insignia graffitied on my car in Gisborne a week ago had finally washed off.

It was the summer holidays and life was dope. So dope, in fact, that I had only one care in the world: the impending meetthe-parents of my better half, David.

As I crunched swiftly along the gravel driveway of his father’s sheep and beef farm, my brain was brimming with huge, important thoughts like hug or handshake? Keep my jandals on or kick them off at the door and is it too dorky to tell them their farm looks exactly like the hills in the default Windows XP background?

But little did I know I should be less concerned about first impressions and much, much more concerned about my imminent assimilation into farm life.

Little did I expect to find myself – mere minutes later – with boots on feet, shed overhead, nostrils replete with overwhelming warm-sheep aroma and nothing but a rousie’s paddle in hand to fend off any prejudice against my Auckland origins.

These were the memories that came flooding back to me this week, thanks to the weekend’s Mainland Speed Shears.

My workmates had the blessed naivety to enquire about my first impressions of shearing and I had to chuckle. To be able to claim experience as a rousie is something I can now wear as proudly as I did that R&V pass – and it certainly took them by surprise.

But it certainly didn’t come easy.

I’m not sure if it was because I was oozing farmy cluelessness,

or because I managed to obscure it, but upon arrival I was swiftly led to a six-stand woolshed to prove myself useful.

I was courteously shown the dunny – a tiny, doorless outhouse about 20 metres away, with the basin a brown bathtub by a tap outside, then I was set to work for the afternoon.

Hundreds of romney lambs were to be sheared and I was to station myself and my paddle near the catching pen door – but oh, not too close, you don’t want to get too close, Jimmy once got too close and it wasn’t pretty – pushing their fleece around the floor.

Truth be told, I knew about as much about shearing as an earthworm knows about astrology.

To 30-something degree heat and tunes pumped out of a Makita speaker, I began shoving that fleece around and hoping I looked at least a fraction as tough as the men wrangling and shearing the sheep before me.

Dags to the right, white fluffy stuff to the left.

At one point, a bunch of lambs

stopped stubbornly at the back of their holding pen and it was my job to encourage them forwards.

I got in the pen. I flailed my arms. I even made weird, gargled yelling noises, but those sheep looked me straight in the eye and stayed put.

They knew damn well what was up. They wanted to see me struggle.

Eventually it came time to hit stop on the Makita speaker and do one last tidy of my fleece piles.

Like a sheep tumbling merrily down the exit chute, I had reached sweet freedom.

But had I done it?

Had I done enough to prove myself?

With the pop of a Tui beer lid and a rough hand on the shoulder, I received my tick of approval.

LETTERS Meals on wheels Owing to a recent accident and being unable to support myself and cook meals etc, I have had meals on wheels delivered successfully for two weeks.

Not knowing how long I would need them they were stopped after this time, however I require them to be reinstated.

After many phone calls to ACC and the hospital kitchen, nothing has been confirmed. Why? Have other patients been through all this hassle like I have?

Trump meeting ‘treason’ “Bizarre.” “Shameful.” “Disgraceful.”

That’s the swift and sweeping condemnation directed at President Donald Trump yesterday after he sided with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a stunning appearance in Helsinki – and that’s just from the Republicans.

Lawmakers in both major parties and former intelligence officials appeared shocked, dismayed and uneasy with Trump’s suggestion that he believes Putin’s denial of interfering in the 2016 elections.

It was a remarkable break with US intelligence officials and the Justice Department.

And just as alarming for some, Trump also put the two countries on the same footing when casting blame for their strained relations.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., called it “one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory.”

Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., called it “bizarre”.

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., called it “shameful.” And Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., tweeted that it was a “bad day for the US.” “This was a very good day for President Putin,” said Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee.

He said Trump’s refusal to condemn Russian interference in the 2016 election makes the US “look like a pushover”.

Rep. Will Hurd, R-Texas, said he’s seen Russian intelligence manipulate many people in his earlier career as a CIA officer.

But, he tweeted, “I never would have thought that the US President would become one of the ones getting played by old KGB hands.”

House Speaker Paul Ryan weighed in to say there’s “no question” that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election and “no moral equivalence” between the US and Russia.

Griggs goes on attack Another week, another blistering Woman’s Day take-down. This time, the weekly Australian women’s magazine has been taken to task on social media over its “rubbish” articles by Channel 7 television presenter and former Australian swimmer, Johanna Griggs. Griggs’ fury comes after the glossy published an article about her titled “Joh’s rules for dropping 5kg FAST!” The problem, she says, is that she hasn’t lost 5kg, she never revealed any weight-loss secrets to Woman’s Day, and she doesn’t even follow the secrets they claim are hers in the article – and doesn’t even know what they mean in some cases.

“The president must appreciate that Russia is not our ally,” Ryan, R-Wis., said in a statement. Russia, he said, “remains hostile to our most basic values and ideals”.

Much of the Republican rebuke came from lawmakers who have been willing to openly criticise the president, a group that remains a minority in the GOP. Many top Republicans remained on the sidelines after the Justice Department on Friday indicted 12 Russian intelligence officials for electionrelated hacking.

But several Republicans who don’t typically buck the president raised concerns, shocked by yesterday’s performance.

Trump ally Newt Gingrich called it “the most serious mistake” of Trump’s presidency – and one that “must be cor-

rected – immediately”.

Democrats pleaded with their GOP colleagues who have majority control of Congress to rein in the president and become a stronger legislative check on the executive branch.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, DN.Y., the minority leader, says never in the history of the country has an American president supported an adversary the way Trump sided with Putin.

He challenged Republicans to move beyond words and confront the president directly by increasing sanctions on Russia and requesting testimony about the summit from Trump administration officials, among other things.

“We need our Republican colleagues to stand up for the good of this country,” he said.

And House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Trump’s weakness in front of Putin wasn’t just “embarrassing” but also “proves that the Russians have something on the President, personally, financially or politically.”

Republicans have been hesitant to fully confront a president who remains popular among GOP voters back home.

But Trump’s hold on the GOP is being put to the test by his willingness to align with Putin, a leader whom Republicans routinely describe as an enemy of the United States.

Off Capitol Hill, former intelligence chiefs who served under President Barack Obama were scathing in their criticism.

Depp settles $25m lawsuits Johnny Depp has settled lawsuits with his former business managers that put a spotlight on the actor’s lavish lifestyle.

Depp’s representatives said the Pirates of the Caribbean star had settled litigation filed against The Management Group, which he accused in January 2017 seeking more than $25 million over alleged financial abuse and negligence.

Depp accused the firm of filing his taxes late, costing him $7.5 million in penalties.

The firm countersued and argued that Depp was solely to blame for his money troubles, saying he paid more than $75 million to buy 14 homes, including a French chateau and a chain of islands in the Bahamas, as well as private jet travel.

‘Lava bomb’ crashes through tour boat A volcanic explosion injured more than 20 people on a sightseeing boat that was watching lava flowing from Hawaii’s active volcano into the ocean.

The boat was off the island’s Eastern coast when the volcano sent what officials said was a basketball-sized “lava bomb” through the boat’s roof and peppered it with volcanic debris.

The Hawaii County Civil Defence Agency said that of the

23 injured, four were taken by ambulances to the hospital, including a 20-year-old woman who was seriously injured after fracturing her femur.

Photos posted by Hawaii county officials showed a manhole cover-sized hole in the boat’s metal roof.

A woman who answered the phone at Lava Ocean Tours confirmed that it was the company’s boat that suffered the explosion but declined to comment further.

Video posted by reporters on social media showed a large explosion of lava into the air.

The tour boats typically depart from Hilo, the county seat for the island in the early morning for three hours tours that cost $225-$250.

“Lava Ocean Tours Big Island lava boat tours are an exciting way to experience the molten hot lava entering the sea,” the company says on its website.

“See, Hear & Feel the heat from your front row seat on-

board one of our world class catamarans.”

According to Hawaii News Now, the boat had left with 49 passengers and three crew members on board and had been touring the area around Kapoho, an unincorporated section near the island’s coastline where the lava explosions from ongoing eruptions at the Kilauea volcano have destroyed hundreds of homes and completely filled in a popular tide pool bay last month.

Rising costs hit Kiwi wallets

Prominent South Canterbury businessman Joe Butterfield has been censured by the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants and made to pay a total of almost $28,000 in penalty and costs.

He was censured for drawing fees as a trustee for three months, after he had been replaced as a trustee, non-compliance of record keeping and that he failed to act with co-trustees, in an unnamed estate’s administration.

Butterfield (78) is a former chairman of the South Canterbury District Health Board for nine years, was honoured with a New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and community in 2013 and is in the Timaru District Council’s Hall of Fame, for International Sportspersons or Administrators; namely for yachting-related achievements.

In March 2015, Butterfield was

replaced by then health minister Dr Jonathan Coleman as chairman of the Southern District Health Board, a role he had from 2010.

Butterfield was contacted on Monday and said he would not be appealing the tribunal’s decision, otherwise he had “no further comment to make”.

In the decision by the institute’s disciplinary tribunal, released last month, the four person Wellington-based tribunal said Butterfield accepted he did not carry out the engagements to the standard expected of a chartered accountant, acting as a professional trustee.

The decision said it had taken into account Butterfield was no longer in public practice nor doing any accounting work.

In its finding, the tribunal said it had been advised Butterfield continued to be a co-trustee of six

trusts, and ordered copies of its decision be sent to those co-trustees; to which Butterfield made no objection.

The complaints against Butterfield were laid by an unnamed male and female, of which he had acted as their accountant, and also as trustee or executor of their estates.

Butterfield, who the institute described as having a “previously unblemished record over a number of decades”, was ordered to pay the institute a penalty of $4000.

A costs order against Butterfield was made for $23,913, but he sought to have those reduced to $15,000 and queried the chargeout rate.

However, the tribunal found the costs order was “fair and reasonable”, and ordered Butterfield pay $23,900.

Domino’s boss gets the most dough The pay of Australia’s top listed company executives has hit a record high with the average rising 12 per cent in the past year to $A4.36m ($4.78m).

An annual survey by the Australian Council of Superannuation Investors (ACSI) found pay for the bosses of ASX100 companies hit the highest level in 2017 since it began doing the research 17 years ago.

The research found the rise was mainly driven by bonus pay, with base pay showing little growth, while bonus payments were up 18

per cent. Bonus pay was awarded to 74 out of 80 chief executives who were eligible for it, with nearly one in three awarded at least 80 per cent of their maximum bonus.

Louise Davidson, ACSI chief executive, said board decisions to pay large bonuses just for hitting budget targets, rather than exceptional performance, was tone deaf in an environment where average wage growth was weak and public trust in Australian businesses was at a low ebb.

“This may be a sign that boards have lost sight of the link between

a company’s social licence and the expectations of communities and investors,” she said.

The report found the highest paid CEO for the ASX200 was the Domino’s Pizza chief executive Don Meij who received realised pay of $A36,837,702 ($40.4m).

Shopping centre magnates Westfield’s joint CEOs Peter and Steven Lowy were the second highest at $A25.9m ($28.4m) followed by financial firm Macquarie Group boss Nicholas Moore who had realised pay of $A25.2m ($27.6m).

remained stubbornly weak and the central bank has signalled the official cash rate (OCR) is likely to remain at a record low 1.75 for some time to come given the lack of inflationary pressure. The biggest driver behind the quarterly lift was housing-related

Food prices, meanwhile, lifted 0.8 per cent in the quarter, with fruit and vegetable prices up 3.1 per cent. Food prices rose 0.7 per cent on the year.

Phil Borkin, senior macro strategist at ANZ, said there was little in the release to suggest the Reserve Bank should move the OCR up or down.

“It is not the catalyst to push us in either direction really. It was kind of a middling result,” Borkin said.

The cost of running a home has risen 3.1 per cent in the year, according to the latest Consumers Price Index figures from Stats NZ. The higher prices for housing and household utilities, up 0.9 per cent this quarter, was the biggest contributor to inflation, which currently sits at 1.5 per cent.

New Zealand second-quarter inflation was slightly lower than economists had expected but in line with central bank forecasts as housing-related prices continue to push higher.

The consumers price index rose 0.4 per cent in the three months ended June 30, while annual inflation was 1.5 per cent, Statistics New Zealand said.

Economists had expected quarterly CPI to rise 0.5 per cent for an annual increase of 1.6 per cent, according to the median in a poll of 13 economists surveyed by Bloomberg. The Reserve Bank had tipped a quarterly rise of 0.4 per cent and an annual increase of 1.5 per cent.

The central bank is mandated with keeping annual inflation between 1-and-3 per cent over the medium term, focusing on the mid-point. However, inflation has

Fish, fish, the family dish F

ish may seem like a fairly expensive option, but it’s just such a great protein for the family.

There are cheaper and more sustainable fish around and there’s nothing wrong with them.

Here’s some recipes from Seafood New Zealand to tempt you!

Orange-infused fish parcels

■ Preheat the oven to 220°C. ■ Caramelised onions: Heat a dash of oil in a heavy-based saucepan over low heat and add the onions, sugar and salt. Cook gently for about 30 minutes or until the onions are soft, stirring from time to time. Add the thyme and red wine vinegar and cook for a further 5 minutes.

■ Beef: Heat a barbecue grill or chargrill until very hot. Rub the beef with a little oil. Place on the hot grill and grill for 3 minutes on each side (this will depend

on thickness of rump). Remove to a plate, season, cover loosely with foil and leave to rest for 1015 minutes.

To serve: Lightly oil a large flat baking tray. Mix together all ingredients for garlic and herb oil and brush over pizza bases.

Place in the oven and bake until golden or according to packet instructions.

Slice the beef thinly across the grain.

Remove pizza bases from the oven and place on a large board.

Top with warmed caramelised onions and the barbecued beef.

Combine all ingredients for the creamy blue cheese and dot over the pizza.

Top with leaves of rocket or watercress.

In brief Canes sign Marshall The Hurricanes have lured James Marshall home from England in another key addition during a week of Super Rugby roster-building for 2019. Classy back Marshall’s last Hurricanes appearance was at fullback in the 2016 final, when they beat the Lions to secure a maiden crown. “I feel that it’s the best environment for me to play to my potential being surrounded by the quality players and management that they have,” Marshall said. The Hurricanes have this week extended the contracts of Jordie Barrett and Ardie Savea into next year, along with loose forward Reed Prinsep and prop Alex Fidow.

Review for TMO rules Sanzaar will launch a review into television match official (TMO) interventions, admitting current rules are “clearly not working” after a string of recent controversies in Super Rugby. It comes after widespread uproar over a red card to Sunwolves flanker Ed Quirk for a “love tap” on a Reds opponent.

Quirk has been issued a two-week suspension for the incident. The force with which the ‘hit’ landed, however, was so minimal that both coaches – former All Blacks Brad Thorn and Tony Brown – joined fans and players in expressing genuine fears about the future of the sport.

Celts hit the front in senior B rugby Celtic have moved to the top of Mid Canterbury Rugby’s senior B Centennial Mug standings after handing Rakaia their first loss of the season. Celtic downed Rakaia 18-17 at Celtic on Saturday, pushing Rakaia down to second on the points table with the finals looming large. Collegiate and Southern round out the top four at the moment, with Collegiate having beaten Allenton 64-15 on Saturday, and Southern downing Mt Somers 49-29. Be wary of circling Sharks

By Christopher reive Winning their final match of the Super Rugby season, the Sharks locked away the eighth seed.

Their reward?

A trip to Christchurch to meet the Crusaders in the quarterfinals.

The Crusaders haven’t looked like losing a game since the Highlanders put them away on March 17.

But when Saturday’s do or die playoff match arrives, count the Sharks out at your folly.

As novelist James A. Baldwin wrote: “The most dangerous creation of any society is the man who has nothing to lose.”

In the Super Rugby playoffs, that’s the Sharks; and there’s something about facing New Zealand franchises that brings out the best in them.

The side travelled to New Zealand twice during the regular season and put on the best of their performances away from home against Kiwi opposition.

They put 63 points on the Blues at Eden Park, then fell agonisingly short against the Hurricanes in Napier – with an Ihaia West sideline conversion over five minutes after the hooter had sounded giving the Hurricanes a one-point win.

At home, the Sharks were dominant.

Winning six of their seven home fixtures, they got the better of both the Chiefs and the Highlanders along the way.

Of their seven wins this season, three came against Kiwi teams.

Unlike many other teams, the Sharks drawing a Kiwi franchise in the opening round probably wasn’t the worst case scenario for them.

In 24 matches against New Zealand sides since the beginning of 2013, the Sharks have a 12-12 record.

The Sharks will also bring confidence in being the only South African team to have beaten the Crusaders at home since 2001, and one of only two non-New

Travelling to Christchurch for a knockout match is a daunting task for any Super Rugby side, especially given the form the Cru-

However, sudden death matches have been known to throw up a few surprises every now and then, and the Sharks will be chomping at the bit when they get onto the paddock at AMI Stadium.

The visitors have shown they’re willing and able to match up in a kicking duel or running the football.

They lead the competition in offloads with 204, and have made the most kicks (328).

They have also missed the least tackles in the competition, and given away the second least penalties.

If they can address their ball security, having committed the most turnovers in the competition, and string some phases together, this will be a much tighter match than many are anticipating.

Black Ferns primed New Zealand want to keep their foot on the throat of the Australia women’s rugby sevens team when the two powerhouses line up for the World Cup in San Francisco.

Since being toppled for gold in the Rio Olympics decider, the Black Ferns Sevens have won 10 of the 11 trans-Tasman clashes which inevitably dictate tournament silverware. The defending champions are comprised of the playing core who snaffled gold at the Commonwealth Games in April, memorably beating Australia 17-12 when Kelly Brazier scorched 80 metres in extra time.

Carter lands in Japan All Blacks great Dan Carter has arrived at his new Japanese club as he gets set to start the final chapter of his long rugby career.

Carter has a two-year deal with the Kobelco Steelers. Carter is joined

by Highlanders Richard Buckman, Tom Franklin and former Blues player Hayden Parker. All Blacks Israel Dagg and Matt Todd are also set to go to Japan after this year’s Super Rugby season ends. Israel Dagg will leave for Japan at the end of his Super Rugby season with the Crusaders.

Prop suing the Bulls A retired South African rugby player is suing the Bulls to the tune of R45m ($NZ5m) for not removing him from the field of a Super Rugby match three years ago after he was injured. Former prop Morné Mellett was injured in a game against the Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth. Mellett, 28, said he has had to give up his dream of an international rugby career and now lived with a Damocles sword over his head because of a blood clot that could enter his brain any instant. Top netball on our own doorstep

s I sat on my lonesome at the media table on Sunday watching Mainland defeat Southern in the final round of the Beko Netball League, I couldn’t help thinking how lucky we are in Ashburton.

It was a cracker game, as was the Beko game Ashburton hosted a few weeks ago – Mainland’s win against Waikato/Bay of Plenty – and for the second time this season Ashburton people really got out and supported it.

Speaking to the Mainland coach before Sunday’s game, she said the crowd at that first game in Ashburton was the biggest they’d seen this season by a long shot.

Yes, that one was held at Queen’s Birthday weekend at the end of the Mainland under-15 netball tournament Ashburton had hosted over the three days, so there were a fair few out-oftown netball fans in Ashburton that weekend too, but the size of the crowd that turned out again on Sunday showed that Ashburton was appreciative of the opportunity to see such top netball action happening right on their

own doorstep.

A few years ago, we would never have been able to host a game like that in Ashburton.

Back when all of our local netball was played on the outdoor courts up at Middle Road we were limited when it came to attracting big games or big tournaments to town, and when we did, there was always a risk of the weather not playing ball.

So, really, a few small tournaments was the extent of what we could attract to Ashburton.

But now we have the EA Networks Centre that has changed that landscape dramatically.

As well as tournaments we now have the ability to host games like the two Beko games we’ve had the pleasure of watching this season.

The Beko league is the tier below the ANZ Championship where the Mainland Tactix played, but the level was still incredibly high, particularly on Sunday.

Mainland needed to win that match to have any chance of finishing in the top two and making it to the grand final, so every pass was contested and bodies

were well and truly put on the line, none more so than our own Kelsey Ashworth.

That was what made this year’s Beko games even more special.

We had three Ashburton women playing vital roles in that team – Ashworth on court, and Ronelle van Dongen and Andrea Cousins in the coaching seats.

Mainland did what they needed to do – they won – but unfortunately Waikato/Bay of Plenty and Central also won which meant Mainland finished third and their season was done.

A shortage of venues postearthquake in Christchurch led Mainland to look further out into their region when it came to where they’d play their home Beko games this season.

Nelson, Lincoln and Ashburton were the big winners out of that and hopefully Ashburton in particular had shown that bringing top netball to the regions had been a really good move, and something they should do more of.

Hopefully Mainland Netball were as happy with the show that we put on for them, as we were with the show they put on for us.

Mainland Netball were well and truly embracing bringing netball to the regions.

When I arrived on Sunday I immediately recognised the lady sitting at the table welcoming people and taking the entry money.

It was Mainland Netball’s CEO, I remembered her from when she was here for the Mainland under-15 tournament last month, and she remembered me.

I can tell you not every big sporting organisation’s CEO can be found doing the donkey work like that, or remembers the name of a lowly ol’ sports reporter out in the regions she’s only met once before.

In brief Henry into coaching Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry is leaving his role as a television soccer pundit to concentrate on coaching. The 40-year-old is Belgium’s assistant manager and helped the Red Devils to a thirdplaced finish at the World Cup. Henry, who played for the Gunners between 1999 and 2007 before returning in a loan spell in 2012, is the club’s all-time top goalscorer and had a bronze statue erected in his honour outside the Emirates Stadium in 2011.

Punters clean up While the French celebrated their big World Cup victory, a few Kiwi punters were celebrating massive betting wins. After spending just $17 on a 10-leg multi last November, France’s win over Croatia sealed a $7206.60 cheque for one lucky Kiwi. The bet spanned across five different sports and eight competitions, with the first leg coming in in November when Jamie Whincup capitalised on Kiwi Scott McLaughlin’s misfortune to claim the 2017 Supercars Championship. One bettor, who only spent $5 on exact score multi wins, won $7870.00, while the biggest TAB win of the World Cup was a whopping $85,000 to a punter who bet $27,000 on head to head multi wins.

Lighting up the A-League

A

s gimmicks go, this isn’t a bad one.

A-league football club the Central Coast Mariners are on the verge of giving the greatest sprinter in history, Jamaican Usain Bolt, a six-week trial.

The aspiring professional footballer, better known for having a drawer full of Olympic gold medals, will get a longer contract if he shows enough footballing ability.

The 31-year-old retired from athletics last year, and has trialed with football clubs in Germany and Norway since.

When it comes to bizarre promotional-signings, the Mariners are lagging well behind the St. Louis baseball franchise who included a dwarf named Edward Gaedel in a 1951 major league game.

Gaedel and his tiny strike zone delivered a famous walk in his only turn at bat, whereas Bolt would give the Mariners speed.

There are however some striking PR similarities, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Bolt would certainly give the Aleague a worldwide profile lift.

Let the fun and games begin... we check out Bolt’s footy career so far.

1) Bolt kicked off his football interest by revealing that playing for Manchester United is one of his biggest dreams.

Bolt’s agent reported a dozen clubs were interested in him.

Suitors included the Mamelodi

Sundowns in South Africa, where Bolt trained alongside All White Jeremy Brockie this year.

2) Manchester United got him on board ... as their guest at the 2011 Champions League final at Wembley, where Barcelona triumphed.

3) When Bolt tried out for Norwegian club Stromsgodset last month, he was given the shirt number 9.58 (9.58s is his world 100m record). Bolt came on as a substitute for 20 minutes and blew a chance to equalise against the Norway under-19 team.

4) Former Borussia Dortmund head coach Peter Stoger said Bolt had plenty of work to do if he hopes to become a top-level footballer, after he trained with the Bundesliga side in March.

Stoger said the ideal physique for football was “completely different” to that of a sprinter, “... but it was really fun for us. It was a pleasure for us to meet a guy like him and to work with him.”

5) Bundesliga.com reported that Bolt scored a “wonderfullytaken headed goal” and produced a “magical nutmeg”, to the delight of the spectators at the Borussia training session.

“I think overall I will give myself probably a seven out of ten, I think I was okay,” Bolt said afterwards.

Michy Batshuayi, a Belgian striker on loan to Borussia from Chelsea, said: “He’s a champion.

He pushes himself beyond his

limits every day. He’s trying to establish himself in another sport, that’s classy.”

6) The Daily Mail review of his training effort noted a “clumsy touch as perhaps his biggest weakness”.

“Unsurprisingly, the retired runner looked a little off the pace as he remained a mere spectator at centre-forward for most of the first half...(he) seemed to struggle with the intensity of the Bundesliga outfit. “...he came to life when presented with his first chance of the game, getting ahead of his marker to power home a cross with a fine

header at the near post.

“His passing was competent, his strength on the ball impressive and his pace undoubted... his finishing was hit and miss but what never wavered was the smile on his face.”

7) Bolt’s first love was cricket, but he also played as a football goalkeeper at primary school.

8) Bolt captained the Rest of the World against England in a UNICEF SoccerAid charity match at Old Trafford last month. He had a goal ruled out for offside, but netted impressively during the penalty shootout. Bolt’s team mates included Manchester United legend Eric Cantona and All Black great Dan Carter.

...Bolt’s agent Ricky Simms — stating the obvious — said playing for Manchester United was a “step too far” for the speedy striker.

“I think if he had six months or nine months playing and training with a team then he could play at some level whether that is League One or League Two,” Goal.com reported Simms as saying.

“He would hit me on the head for saying he is not going to play in the Champions League, but I don’t know realistically if he has the motivation at this stage of his life to go training with the reserves on a rainy day in Manchester or Munich or somewhere as he is a wealthy guy and has a great life.

“With football though in some form you will see him.”

Enter the Mariners, and there shouldn’t be too many rainy training days there.

10) Sorry, it’s not a gimmick Mariners chief executive Shaun Mielekamp told the Telegraph: “Apart from him obviously being extremely fast, the feedback we have received from Germany and Norway is that he is a very good learner, and shows dramatic improvement after every training session.

“This is a very real football opportunity, this is not a stunt or gimmick – we want to know if Usain can play.

“If he can, let’s light up the A-League and bring one of the biggest-named athletes in sport to the Central Coast.”

The son of Zed moved into a single figure quote for the Cup following his Trentham success last Saturday in the Whyte Handicap and is now on the third line of betting on $8 behind the $5 favourite Red Sierra.

A race such as the Gr.1 Toorak Handicap at Caulfield is a possible longer-range target.

Dunn to drive for Butt Champion driver Dexter Dunn will be a surprise player in Saturday night’s $200,000 Group 1 Blacks A Fake at Albion Park.

Just days before he finally jets off for a driving stint in the US, Dunn has answered a call from former Kiwi trainer Tim Butt to drive one of his two runners in Queensland’s biggest race.

Butt faced a dilemma when he changed his mind and opted to run both Miracle Mile winner My Field Marshal and exciting fouryear-old Let It Ride.

His driving options were limited as it was confirmed Chris Geary, who has driven both Butt’s stable stars, would be aboard Len Smith Mile winner Cruz Bromac this weekend.

“We’d already decided to switch Let it Ride from the 4YO race to the Blacks A Fake and My Field Marshal has scoped clear, so we’ve have the two running,” Butt said.

“Ants (Anthony Butt) has the pick of the drives and he’s some thinking to do now after the draw.”

Let It Ride drew nicely in gate three, but My Field Marshal will again start from the back row (gate 11).

The training careers in Hong Kong of Almond Lee and Derek Cruz have officially come to an end. The pair failed to meet the 16-win benchmark for a third time, with 53-year-old Lee falling just one winner short. A former assistant to David Hayes, Lee proved unsuccessful when fronting the Jockey Club’s Licensing Committee “show cause” hearing on Monday.

Top sire dies Popular sire Hinchinbrook has died at Yarraman Park Stud after breaking a hind leg. A threequarter brother to champion sire Snitzel, Hinchinbrook was fully booked for the upcoming breeding season. “We are devastated as you can imagine,” Yarraman’s Harry Mitchell said. “He’s been a special horse for us and we believed in him from the start. He wasn’t an easy horse to get going as he was not the most fertile, but he kept proving himself and getting that good horse. It just breaks your heart, but it’s something that happens. It happened to Northern Meteor and it happened to Scat Daddy, as sad as it is, you have to regroup and move on.”

Tarzino Logan staying close to home targeted ■ TE AROHA

Samantha Logan will be staying put with her in-form team for the rest of the jumping season.

The Cambridge trainer had thoughts of heading south to Riccarton next month for the Grand National carnival, but has decided against the venture.

“Everybody I’ve spoken to is going down there with all their good horses so we’ll probably work around that and stay up here,” the Cambridge trainer said.

Logan will have four representatives at Te Aroha today, including the last-start runners-up Henry Tudor, Ngatira Gold and Zamora while Lacustre has also gone close in recent outings.

Ngatira Gold has shown a liking for the Te Aroha track. two appearances on the course and will have the benefit of Aaron Kuru in the saddle.

“He’s been working really well

Ngatira Gold also has an excellent record on the track where

he is a multiple winner and placegetter and he will be Shaun Phelan’s mount in the Knottingly Farm Steeplechase (3500m).

“He’s taken a couple of runs to come up this year, he’s bounced back now and he definitely loves it there,” Logan said.

Phelan will also take the reins on Lacustre in The Dentist Morrinsville Hurdle (3100m).

“He’s a real Ellerslie type of horse, he loves the hill, and we’ll just get through this year with him and look at the some of the Ellerslie features next year,” Logan said.

Her remaining runner is Zamora, who will step out in the Morrinsville TC Steeple and he is overdue to break through, having placed in three of his five attempts over big fences. - NZME

A crack at a Group One feature for Magnum will be determined by the opening performance of his upcoming campaign.

“He’ll probably go for the open 1200m at Te Rapa on August 4, we’ll aim for that and depending how he runs we could look at the Tarzino Trophy at Hawke’s Bay,” trainer Lauren Brennan said.

The weather will also be a major factor in Magnum’s progress.

“When he ran at Counties in the Easter it was a Heavy 11 and we won’t be doing that again,” Brennan said.

“The ground got to him and he was a little bit distressed after that. Although he recovered quickly, we learned our lesson.”

Brennan is confident Magnum will be up to the task on better ground.

Early return for DWZ

Penrith’s chances of moving back into the NRL top four have received a boost with fullback Dallin Watene-Zelezniak set for an early return from injury against Brisbane. Watene-Zelezniak had initially been ruled out for three weeks after tearing his hamstring against the Warriors in round 17.

But the New Zealand international trained with the team on Monday and has flown up with the team for a mini-camp on the Gold Coast ahead of Friday’s clash. “I’ll give Dallin every chance but he’s a good chance of being back,” coach Anthony Griffin said.

Croker out for season

Ryan a reluctant future star

Canberra have had their worst fears about Jarrod Croker confirmed, with the Raiders captain ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Scans have revealed the star centre will need surgery after his left knee cap dislocated in the 38-12 win over North Queensland on Saturday. Croker is scheduled to have surgery next week in a bid to start training again by the end of the year. His absence is a bitter blow as the Raiders aim to keep their finals hopes alive, sitting two games outside of the top eight.

A young Ashburton rugby league player is in with a shot of making the South Island under-15 league team.

Ryan Muriithi, 14, was part of the Aoraki Eels team at last week’s South Island under-15 rugby league tournament in Greymouth and thanks to his performances was asked to trial for the South Island team.

He was one of three players from the Aoraki team to make the South Island team trials, despite it not being the best week for the young Eels side.

They were well beaten in their first game against West Coast,

but Muriithi and his team-mates had a much better outing against Southland, winning 56-6.

In game three against Canterbury Under-14, Muriithi scored a try before having to leave the field injured after getting his leg stood on.

He wasn’t the last one to get injured either, a number of his team-mates followed and it got so bad they had to call the game off early.

The injuries meant they were short on numbers for their last game against Canterbury’s second team at the tournament, the Canterbury under-15 team, but by that stage the two Canterbury teams were well out in

front overall so the decision was made that Aoraki could borrow a few players so the game could go ahead.

From there players were selected to trial for the South Island team, and a second trial would be held in August, with a team then picked to head to a tournament in Auckland.

There would be just one South Island team, and five from the North Island teams at the tournament.

Ashburton had a player make the South Island under-15s last year – Mac Kaitao, who had gone on to get a scholarship to St Thomas of Canterbury College.

Whether Muriithi would fol-

low in Kaitao’s footsteps and also play for the South Island though, he’d have to wait and see.

With no junior rugby league competition in Mid Canterbury, Muriithi played rugby for Hampstead’s under 14.5 side as a flanker or lock, but he wasn’t sure whether rugby or rugby league really featured in his future.

He said he mainly played them for fitness and he was thinking of trying his hand at basketball next year.

With a number of players from this year’s Aoraki Eels under-15 team too old for that grade next year, it was hoped Aoraki might also be able to field an under-17 team in 2019.

Spieth hails America’s golden generation

By Carl MarkhaM Defending Open champion Jordan Spieth believes his generation is the best and most fearless in the history of the game – and he is currently at the head of it.

Last year players under 25 won 40 per cent of events on the PGA Tour and while that number has dropped this season, young Americans have dominated the past five majors.

Spieth, 25 on July 27, leads the way with three career majors but not far behind is 28-year-old Brooks Koepka, who successfully defended his maiden US Open title last month.

Making up the contingent of 20-something Americans are Justin Thomas, 25, and Patrick Reed, 27, who made their breakthroughs at the US PGA and Masters respectively.

“We had an extremely strong class of players out of the United States in my graduating high school class and classes around us,” said Spieth after handing back the Claret Jug on his arrival at Carnoustie for the 147th Open.

“Our class has a ridiculous number of worldwide wins, the 24-year-olds or whatever, the 2011 high school class.

“It’s kind of absurd and would compare probably better than

any other class in maybe the history of the game.

“The deeper fields we’ve experienced in junior and amateur golf led to quick transitions onto the PGA Tour.

“So maybe when it took five years to transition guys into winning 10, 15 years ago it’s taking guys five months now and whether it’s five times faster or 10 times faster you’re more well prepared for majors.

“It’s a natural transition into, kind of, fearless golf at the highest level.

“I think that’s what you are kind of seeing out of the 20-something-year-olds.”

Spieth admits he has struggled with his game but feels a muchneeded recent break has helped him refocus, especially after taking the same holiday that he did a couple of weeks before Birkdale.

“I went to Seattle.

“My little sister was cheerleading at the US Special Olympics,” he said.

“I hadn’t been up to Seattle since the US Open at Chambers Bay (which he won in 2015) so I went out to Chambers Bay with Michael (Greller, his caddie) and we walked down the 18th hole and it was cool reliving those memories.”

Bunnies better than ‘14 Sam Burgess has declared South Sydney’s class of 2018 better than their 2014 NRL premiership group.

The Rabbitohs are flying high at the top of the NRL ladder after notching up nine straight victories.

With the likes of Damien Cook and Robert Jennings enjoying breakout seasons, George and Tom Burgess running over the top of rival forward packs and veteran John Sutton discovering careerbest form, the Bunnies have been installed as premiership favourites.

Riding with broken thumb Dion Smith is set to continue racing in the Tour de France after a chaotic ninth stage crash left the Kiwi cyclist in doubt.

The 25-year-old was caught in a chainreaction accident during a stage that featured treacherous cobbles and was left with a fractured thumb, bruised cheek, bruised ribs, and cuts to his left hand.

But full of optimism, Smith told Radio Sport he believed things could have been worse and after enjoying a convenientlytimed rest day, the Kiwi cyclist said he was ready to hit the road.

“It was a bit rough but I had a pretty good sleep last night and today was a rest day so

I just took it easy on the bikes for an hour and just relaxed and put the feet up,” Smith said.

“It’s always going to be full of highs and lows in any sort of race and being such a long race it’s going to be expected.

“Crashes are always going to happen ... I think I did fall at the right time so to speak.

“It just makes for a good story really ... for me personally it could’ve been worse.

“I think there’ll be a lot of sore riders tomorrow because a lot of guys crashed yesterday so I know I’m not the only one in the boat.”

Ashburton’s Jacob Gray was called into the Northland under-18 men’s hockey side after an injury to the side’s goalkeeper in Dunedin last week.

One player’s misfortune turned into Jacob Gray’s good fortune last week.

When the Northland under-18 hockey side’s sole goalkeeper was struck down by injury at the New Zealand Hockey under-18 men’s regional tournament in Dunedin, they put out an SOS which Gray happily answered.

The Ashburton 15-year-old had earlier trialled for the Canterbury side and missed out, but when Northland found themselves in dire straits and started asking around if anyone knew of anyone who could help them out, Canterbury put Gray’s name forward.

Northland’s goalie had a knee injury heading into the tournament – a slight meniscus tear – and there was always a chance he might not make it through the whole tournament, so Gray was put on standby a couple of days before it began.

A couple of games in the goalie’s injury became worse and he could no longer continue.

Goalkeeper was a specialist position – you couldn’t just put someone from the field in the goal, particularly at that level where you were competing as one of the top eight under-18 sides in the country.

So last Wednesday Gray headed south to join the Northland team.

Coming in to a team mid-tournament wasn’t easy, particularly when it was a team from the other end of the country where Gray knew no one.

“Especially when you’re goalkeeper, because your job is to talk and tell everyone what’s happening, and you don’t know everyone’s name so you can’t tell them,” Gray said.

“But by the last game I was pretty good with names.”

Ironically, Gray’s first outing for Northland was against Canterbury and they

lost 5-0, and in his second they lost 4-1 to Southern, but on the final day they turned that result around and beat Southern 2-1.

Being a goalkeeper could be a stressful job at times – you were literally the last line of defence – but Gray had loved it ever since he first offered to stand in goal when a young team his mum was coaching was short of a player when he was only about six years old.

Now, he played in goal three times a week, for the Wakanui senior men’s team on a Saturday, for Ashburton College on a Friday night in Christchurch, and for his first-grade side on a Sunday.

But he did play in the field once a week, for his age group team on a Monday night.

With umpiring, training and practices in between times, the hockey turf was pretty much Gray’s second home in the winter and would continue to be for some time yet.

“I’d like to play at a high level, but if that

fails I’ve always got umpiring.

“There’s always a game to umpire,” Gray said.

This weekend he’d be back in action at the Ashburton hockey turf for his Wakanui side which was top of the table in the Mid/ South Canterbury senior men’s competition with only three games to go until the finals.

But they had second placed Temuka to play on Saturday – a team which featured former Black Stick Hayden Shaw, who was notorious for his drag flick which could challenge even the best of goalkeepers.

But facing a player like that would help Gray to grow his own game and become a better player in the future.

At 15, Gray still had two more years of under-18 hockey ahead of him and was hopeful he’d be back at the national tournament again, although hopefully in the more familiar red and black of Canterbury next time.
