Gun charges dropped A Timaru man accused of unlawful possession of military-style semi-automatic guns had four charges against him dismissed when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Richard Lincoln, 55, had denied charges of unlawfully possessing restricted weapons – a Panther DPMS semi-automatic rifle and a Hatsan Escort 12 gauge semi-automatic shotgun – and charges of possessing cannabis and obstructing police. Police asserted both were military-style semi-automatic firearms but Lincoln argued they were not.

Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton court last month and she delivered her reserved judgment yesterday, saying all charges were dismissed.

She said the charge of obstruction had not been proven beyond reasonable doubt; there was no case to answer on the cannabis charge because it depended on inadmissible evidence obtained by unlawful search. She said the firearms charges attracted no case to answer because they also depended on improperly obtained and inadmissible evidence.

The charges resulted in 2015 when the Timaru man was travelling through Ashburton on September 17. A military-style semi-automatic firearm, an empty magazine fitted, was stored in the passenger footwell of his vehicle when he visited a service station and stopped to use the public toilets.

NZers so stupid – scammer

An Ashburton resident was left feeling disconcerted yesterday after a phone scammer told her that they target New Zealand because the people are “stupid”.

The lady, who wished not to be named, said she managed to recognise that the phone call was a scam early on.

Pretending to be from the New Zealand Tax Department – which raised the first red flag – the caller stated that a refund was waiting.

“He told me that I was going to receive a government tax refund,” she said.

“I knew straight away what was going on and I asked him if he was a scammer and he admitted it straight away.”

Scammers are renowned for abruptly ending any phone call in which their ruse is uncovered, but this particular phone call went into a lot more depth before it finally ended.

“I asked him why he didn’t get a real job and earn money properly like the rest of us.

“He said that this was easy money.”

When pressed as to why his group targeted New Zealand so much the caller was quite upfront.

“It’s because New Zealand people are so stupid and easy to fool.”

The woman pressed the caller for a bit longer before eventually hanging up on him after he proved to be unrelenting in his pursuit for getting an end result from the phone call.

“I just hung up on him after a while, he wouldn’t stop.

“It’s really concerning though, I’m young enough to realise what’s going on but what about someone who is a bit older and all they hear is the promise of free money.

“If all they hear is that the government want to give them a refund it could be very dangerous for them.”

Phone scammers are a constant threat in Ashburton with the Guardian aware of a number of different groups this year alone who have tried to ply their trade in the Ashburton District.

They have targeted both private residences and businesses.

EV charging station for Ashburton

A new electric vehicle (EV) charging station for Ashburton is “absolutely pivotal” in the EV network, says Timaru motorist Mary-Jane Konings.

She has been among the first to charge up her car for free at the new station, located in the West Street car park, following its commissioning by EA Networks yesterday.

The station is located on State Highway One at the southern end of the car park, where there is free all-day parking. Two of the parking spaces have been marked out as EV charging areas next to the station, and Konings and fellow EV users are asking that Ashbur-

ton people exercise courtesy and don’t park there.

EA Networks has worked out with the Ashburton District Council to mark out the parks, however, there will be no ticketing of motorists if they choose to park there.

Konings said driving to Christchurch will now be a lot easier for her. She previously had to make it to the charging station at Rakaia, which for her Nissan Leaf, had been a stretch.

She bought the car, which has a top speed of about 150 kilometres per hour, about one year ago at a cost of about $27,000. As demand had increased the vehicles had lowered in price, and the equivalent car was now about $18,500.

“Once people have driven an EV

and have seen it is real and it’s fun, they don’t go back,” Konings said.

She is a member of the EV Group, an informal nationwide network which advocated and educated on EVs. EA Network business support analyst Roanna Thomas said the Ashburton EV Fast Charger, free for a limited time, was the second of three EA Networks was establishing in Mid Canterbury.

The first in Rakaia has been used almost 100 times since its installation in March, and planning is under way for one in Methven.

“This is necessary infrastructure to allow that (EV) market to establish. EVs are critical to New Zealand’s desire to reduce carbon emissions,” she said.

check Lincoln’s Timaru address, where a window was broken to gain access after an officer reported seeing what looked like a body in a living area.

An improper search of the property took place and an unsecured

shotgun found under a mattress, along with ammunition.

The weapons that were the subject of the charges were found in a locked gun safe.

Judge Maze said there was no evidence of Lincoln deliberately

brandishing any firearm when he stopped in Ashburton though people in the town who saw him with it would have been concerned in the wake of Russell Tully murdering two Winz workers and seriously injuring another in 2014.

Wet winter brings mud, more mud

Dairy farmers heading into calving are dealing with mud, mud and more mud as a wet winter unfolds in Mid Canterbury.

So far this month the MetService has recorded 59.4 millimetres of rain at Ashburton Airport, which is more than twice the long term average for the month so far, which is 29 millimetres.

And so far this year there has been 472.6 millimetres of rain at the airport weather station, almost 100 millimetres more than the av-

erage for this date of 374 millimetres.

It has meant mud in high density winter feeding areas, and farmers having to work hard to preserve their pastures for calving and spring feeding.

Sharemilker at the 550-cow Brookden Farm at Lauriston, Christopher O’Malley, said the one word which summed up conditions so far this winter was “damp”.

Utilisation of winter feed crops was not as good as cows walked on the plants in the muddy conditions, so he was having to feed

out more. Breezy conditions today and tomorrow would hopefully dry things out a little before more wet weather was forecast at the end of the week.

“We don’t need it, we are already saturated,” O’Malley said.

He was keeping cows at their wintering paddocks as long as possible, and delaying bringing them home prior to calving, as cows on farm would damage pasture. Some cows were due back yesterday but he was hoping to hold them off for another week before bringing them back.

Cows on-farm had begun calving with about one dozen calves so far.

Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers dairy section chairman Nathan Currie said while there was frustration with “a bit of mud around”, looking forward it would be for the best.

“The good news is the recharging of the underground aquifers will be happening flat out, and snow on the hills is good for irrigation later in the year,” Currie said.

The average date for calving to begin in Mid Canterbury was August 1, and by August 20 it would be mid-way through.

The MetService is forecasting a chance of heavy rain and southerlies developing overnight Thursday and continuing through Friday, with snow down to 400 metres on Friday.

Forecaster Tuporo Marsters said yesterday it was too early at this stage to estimate the amount of rain or snow.

A celebration of new mums and their bubs Exhibition

draws inspiration from book

The hard-working Ashburton Newcomers’ Association have joined forces with generous locals for a special celebration of new mums and their bubs next month.

They’re hosting a Baby Shower at Community House on Wednesday, August 2, from 1pm to 2pm, and they’re looking for any new mums to come and join the fun.

The event came about when Newcomers’ Association president Sophie-Claire Violette put out a call for any warm winter clothes to give to mums within the group, and received an “overwhelming” response.

“I received much more than I thought I would … knitted fingerless gloves and hand warmers from the Tinwald Red Cross, knitted jumpers, baby slippers and warm covers, diapers and toys,” Violette says, “the donations were all piling up in the corner of my office.”

Instead of keeping them for members within the newcomers’ association, she decided to organise a festival for all new mums within the Ashburton community.

want to connect, maybe would like a bag and to hear about other support groups available for mums and their babies in our community, will come.”

Alongside the flurry of school holiday activity at the Ashburton Art Gallery, a mysterious new exhibition has opened up to the public.

The exhibition, titled Unless, is the brainchild of Christchurchbased artist Annabel MenziesJoyce, and opened on Saturday afternoon.

Unless draws inspiration from the Dr Seuss children’s book The Lorax and copies of the book are available at the entrance “to read aloud in the exhibition”, as visitors wend their way among figurines encased in frosted glass.

However, it’s not all about the whimsical world of Seuss – the display also brings together deeper themes of industrial intensification, global warming and water pollution, which are issues close to Menzies-Joyce’s heart.

26 years service comes to end

Don Breach is leaving behind more than a quarter century of service as secretary to the Methven Lions Club.

While working as Burnett Transport’s Methven depot manager in 1988 he joined the club, and three years later his neighbour suggested he step into the secretarial role. That was Bruce Hopwood, and he was to be the first president alongside whom Breach served.

“It took a fair while to convince me I could do it,” said the 76-year-old granddad who lives in Methven with wife Win. And indeed he did find himself out of his depth to start with, but talked to a member of a neighbouring Lions group and eventually came to grips with the demands of the role.

After Hopwood, there were another 25 presidents to come.

“It was just good to watch them over their term as they progressed. It’s no small job to man-

age a heap of guys,” he said.

Indeed, Methven is among the largest Lions groups in New Zealand with about 70 members.

It holds events capitalising on the scenic setting of the ski town, including the Mountain Thunder street motorcycle racing, Mt Hutt summer open day, and four-wheel-drive Rakaia Gorge to Lake Heron scenic drive.

For 40 years it held the Ruawai exchange, which saw teenagers from Methven and Ruawai hosted in each other’s towns.

At the club’s annual general meeting recently outgoing president Richard Watson presented Breach with awards including the international Melvin Jones Fellowship, in recognition of his long service.

Breach said he had enjoyed a great working relationship with long-serving treasurer Graeme Chittock, who had recently passed away. Chittock was also awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship, and received it earlier this year.

The Early Pregnancy Programme is for mums-to-be and their partners in the 12th to 24th week of pregnancy.

Tutored by Canterburybased child birth educator Amy Wilcox, it will give the chance for attendees to learn and have questions answered on a range of topics, and to meet others.

Ashburton Parents’ Centre formerly offered Childbirth Education Classes, which are typically attended in the later stages of pregnancy, and are now offered by Plunket.

Mid Cantabrians keen to put on ice skates and glide across the Staveley rinks will have to wait at least a few more days. Ice had been building up across the rinks following a series of frosts, but snow last week has literally put a dampener on skaters’ plans. “Now we have this snow on top of it, all we can do is wait and see what the frost is going to do,” ice manager Ivan Syme said. The rink would need a series of three to four good frosts in a row. He hoped volunteers would be able to open for ice-skating this winter, after there was not enough frosts last year, although there had been just enough ice for a couple of days’ curling.

Ashburton firefighters were kept busy yesterday with three call-outs during the course of the day. They were called to an alarm activation at Princes Court in the morning before four units responded to a fire at a house on Hepburns Road past the Ashburton Golf Course.

Then, late in the afternoon, they were called to Hinds to attend a truck that had caught fire.

The directors’ election will be held using the first past the post majority system via postal and online voting by Fonterra shareholders.

Elections for the directors’ remuneration committee and the shareholders’ council will also be held this year.

Nominations for both elections will be called in August.

Fonterra shareholders are eligible to stand for the Fonterra elections.

Candidates must satisfy eligibility requirements in order to be elected and further procedural requirements are specified in the election rules.

Fonterra nominations open Course specifically Nominations for the Fonterra board of directors’ election opened yesterday with an election to be held for three farmerelected directors.

The independent nomination process will run first, with nominations needing to be received by the returning officer, Warwick Lampp of electionz.com, by noon on Monday, August 7.

The independent nomination process candidates will be announced on September 11.

Self-nominations, where farmers can put themselves forward as a candidate for the board outside the independent nomination process, will follow, with the nomination period running from September 11 to September 21.

The returning officer will confirm all farmer directors’ election candidates on September 25.

Secretary Katie Sullivan said members decided to consider hosting the new nationwide parents’ centre’s Early Pregnancy Programme to fill a niche in the town.

Some enrolments had been received but more were needed.

“If it’s successful it would be a regular thing to be held in Ashburton,” Sullivan said.

The one-day course is to be held this Saturday at Ashburton Parents’ Centre 9.30am to 3.30pm and the cost would be $75 per couple.

Fraudster jailed The employer of a woman who stole more than $200,000 lived on the bare minimum for three years completely unaware one of his most trust staff members was stealing from him. It would eventually be a new staff member at AP Group who became suspicious about Lois Jean Povey’s transactions that eventually lifted the lid on her sizeable, and lengthy, theft. And it was the lengthy nature of Povey’s theft that yesterday saw Judge Philip Connell jail her for two years and two months in the Hamilton District Court.

Bus impaled on fence A bus has been “impaled” on a barrier at the Akoranga bus station in Takapuna, smashing through the front windscreen and apparently injuring the driver. Police were called to the Akoranga bus station on Auckland’s North Shore at 4.57pm, a spokeswoman said.

She said the empty bus had hit a barrier. The driver of the bus was the only person on board at the time, she said.

Driver avoids further disqualification A man with 22 previous convictions and jail time for driving while disqualified was shown leniency in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Driving bans and prison had done nothing to stop Jonathan Michael Black, said Judge Joanna Maze.

She heard Black had turned his life around since his last conviction for driving while disqualified in August 2015.

He had even got his licence back.

Black had admitted driving while disqualified the following May after being dismissed from his job.

The 38-year-old had since moved to Ashburton, was working and studying towards dairy farm qualifications.

Judge Maze said Black had an extensive history of driving while disqualified or while his licence had been suspended and had been to jail.

But his change of circumstances was remarkable and deserved a positive outcome, she said.

She sentenced Black to 60 hours community work, with no further disqualification.

Sheldon Eric Price, 36, a dairy farm worker from Coldstream, admitted drink driving on Isleworth Road on June 1.

He and other dairy farm workers had had a long day drying off cows and he was shouting a few beers; he didn’t think about how much he had had to drink when he got behind the wheel later that night.

Price was breathalysed and asked for blood to be taken. The test showed 105 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

Judge Maze fined him $300 and disqualified him from driving for six months. He was also ordered to pay $130 court costs, $75 medical fees and $109.25 for the blood analysis.

David Nelson King, 46, blew 1125mcg when he was breathtested at his Ashburton home after driving there from Ashburton Staveley Road on February 18.

He admitted a charge of drink driving and was fined $1000, ordered to pay court costs and disqualified from driving for six months.

A motorist had seen him driving erratically and followed him

home, pointing it out to police.

Danica Elizabeth Rodgers was fined $700, ordered to pay court costs and disqualified from driving for six months after admitting a charge of drink driving.

She blew 847mcg after being stopped on Maronan Valetta Road on June 13.

Rodgers left the house where she had been drinking after a fight broke out and police were called. She was breathalysed on her return.

Salaina Faoagali, 41, drove to town to uplift a family member in trouble at a nightclub but he was over the breath alcohol limit when police stopped him driving on East Street on March 6. He blew 477mcg.

Faoagali, a meat worker, had been drinking at home but felt obligated to rescue the family member.

He admitted the charge of drink driving and was fined $300, plus costs, and disqualified from driving for six months.

Michelle Anne Croton, 44, was breath tested after crash-

ing her car at the corner of East and South Streets on May 24. She blew 472mcg.

Croton, who had been drinking at her Tinwald home before getting behind the wheel, said she did not see the car she turned in front of.

Her case has been remanded to August 28 for restorative justice and sentencing.

Regan Paul Ayers, 37, will be sentenced on August 28 for his second drink drive charge within two years. Ayers blew 918mcg after being stopped on Walnut Avenue on April 19; his previous drink drive conviction was in early 2015.

Ayers’ lawyer Paul Bradford said his client had referred himself for alcohol counselling.

Elvis Purua, 21, will be given the chance to apologise to his victims, including the Ashburton Roast Eatery, at a restorative justice meeting. Purua is charged with stealing the cash till from the food shop on March 5, stealing meat and groceries worth $100 from Countdown on March 14, stealing perfume and a hat

from Coin Save on March 5 and trespassing on The Warehouse.

Judge Maze said restorative justice was a last-ditch attempt to keep Purua out of jail, even though the victims were not especially keen to participate.

She said he should not squander the chance to apologise for his actions.

“You face the real possibility of a prison sentence. How you behave between now and sentencing will have an impact on the outcome.”

Purua was remanded to August 28.

Wilson Kira Whare, 25, admitted driving while disqualified when he was stopped behind the wheel of a car on his way to pick up his daughter from school on June 20. He had been disqualified for six months just weeks earlier.

Whare said prior arrangements for the pickup fell through and he drove, in spite of the ban.

He was convicted and disqualified for another six months, starting from November 15.

Child support to be pulled from wages Overdue child support payments will be automatically deducted from liable parents’ pay packets as part of major changes proposed by the Government.

In announcing the reforms, Revenue Minister Judith Collins revealed that debt on family support was now “billion of dollars”, much of it overseas, including $4 million owed by a single parent.

In a bid to claw back some of this money, the Government will change the law to allow payments to be automatically deducted from parents’ wages or salaries.

Child support payments will also be based on all income made by parents, including anything held in trusts.

The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) already has powers to pursue student loan debtors overseas, and Collins would not rule out extending those powers – including arrest at the border – to negligent parents.

“Most people who need to pay child support pay it directly to the parent ... and most people sort things out themselves,” she said at a press conference at Parliament yesterday.

“But there are some people who over the years have decided to scoot off to other countries to escape their responsibilities.”

Much of the child support debt was the result of penalties on late payment, rather than actual child support payments. As a result, Collins said the penalties will be scrapped because they appeared to deter rather than encourage people to pay off their debt.

Collins said the Government already had some arrangements with the Australian Government to collect the child support debt owed by people there.

Asked whether powers to arrest student loan borrowers at the border could be extended to parents owing child support money, Collins said people could propose such a move as part of the consultation process.

“It may be one of the very good suggestions that someone might like to make,” she said.

The child support changes are included in an overhaul of the way the IRD collects or pays social support, including Working for Families payments, student loans, and child support payments.

The main part of the reforms is to introduce a “pay-as-you-go” system which would allow the IRD to base payments on up-todate information held by third parties rather than requiring an annual tax return.

Fisherman thankful to be alive A man who got lanced by a stingray yesterday is thankful he’s still alive to tell the tale.

Whangarei man Dan Alders was stabbed by a black stingray as he tried to save its life by flicking it overboard.

The 35-year-old commercial fisherman was lifting it up by its gill when its barb shot through his elbow.

“A lot of swearing words” came to mind as Alders realised what had happened.

As blood poured from the puncture wound, his quickthinking skipper grabbed some towels to stem the bleeding.

“It’s their natural instinct to

flick their tail up,” Alders said.

“I’m always aware of it. I’d already thrown 30 or so over that day.

“It just happened to be that one that got me.”

Coastguard was called to the boat that was at the Hen and Chicken Islands, off the coast of Whangarei around 10.20am due to the “severe laceration”.

After assessing his wound and giving first aid, the Coastguard team transported Alders back to Marsden Cove, to a waiting ambulance.

Alder’s whole arm was numb to touch from the poison and throbbing with pain. He got two

stitches to seal up the gaping hole. He has two weeks before he has to be back on the sea and he’s hoping to be healed by then.

But he’s got no ill feelings towards the stingray. He called the incident “just part of the job” of being a commercial fisherman.

“If you cast a shadow over their eyes it’s their natural instinct to flick their barb up,” he said.

“I don’t blame it for what it did ... They are live animals pulled out of the water, they are not going to be very happy.”

Alders was just glad he’s still here to tell the tale. “That’s the main thing, I didn’t lose a limb or anything.”

Lack of a ride proves costly for disqualified driver From P5 Ofisa Tautala, 22, a meat worker, took a chance and drove to work when his regular ride did not go ahead at the last minute. The disqualified driver was caught by police and he admitted the charge yesterday.

He was fined $200, ordered to pay $130 court costs and disqualified for another six months,

from November 15. His Nissan car was also confiscated.

Brodie Richard Morresey was jailed for 10 months when he appeared for sentence on charges of assault, intimidation and breaching a protection order in force against him.

Judge Maze said the assaults were low level, but combined

with the other activity formed a pattern that made him a manipulative stalker trying to enforce his will on the victim.

Morresey has already served four months on remand and his lawyer had asked for any further time in prison to be converted into a sentence of home detention. The judge refused.

ford said Morresey knew his behaviour was inexcusable and four months in custody had given him a chance to reflect and change his mindset.

Navindran Naiker, 49, admitted a charge of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

He was convicted and fined $500.

Naiker had swung a metal bar several times at a person who managed to duck out of the way.

The pair have a history over property damage.

Naiker’s lawyer Ros Burnside said a conviction might affect his application for citizenship or stop him becoming a Justice of the Peace and had asked for a discharge without conviction.

Flash flood kills nine Nine people died and a 13-yearold boy was still missing yesterday after a furious flash flood tore through a group of family and friends cooling off in a creek in the Tonto National Forest in Arizona.

Gila County Sheriff’s Detective David Hornung said that the group from the Phoenix and Flagstaff areas had met up for a daytrip along the popular Cold Springs swimming hole near Payson in central Arizona and were playing in the water Saturday afternoon when muddy flood waters came roaring down the canyon.

The group had set out chairs to lounge on a warm summer day when miles upstream an intense thunderstorm dumped heavy rainfall on the mountain.

Search and rescue crews, including 40 people on foot and others in a helicopter, recovered the bodies of five children and four adults, some as far as two miles down the river.

The victims ranged in age from a 60-year-old woman to a 2-year-old girl.

Four others were rescued Saturday and taken to Banner hospital in nearby Payson for treatment for hypothermia.

Rescuers got to the four victims quickly after the crew heard their cries while they were nearby helping an injured hiker.

Crews were yesterday walking along the banks poking through debris, including tree trunks.

The flash-flooding hit at Cold Springs canyon, about 100 miles northeast of Phoenix, a popular recreation area easily reached by relatively easy hiking paths.

Some know it as Ellison Creek or Water Wheel swimming holes.

Hornung said the treacherously swift waters gushed for about 10 minutes before receding in the narrow canyon.

He estimated flood waters reached six feet high and 40 feet wide.

Disa Alexander was hiking to the swimming area where Ellison Creek and East Verde River converge when the water suddenly surged.

She was still about 2½ miles away when she spotted a man holding a baby and clinging to a tree. His wife was nearby, also in a tree.

Had they been swept farther downstream, they would have been sent over a 20-foot waterfall, Alexander said.

Alexander and others tried to reach them but couldn’t.

“We were kinda looking at the water; it was really brown,”

she said. “Literally 20 seconds later you just see, like hundreds of gallons of water smacking down and debris and trees getting pulled in.

“It looked like a really big mudslide.”

The National Weather Service, which had issued a flash flood warning, estimated up to 1.5 inches of rain fell over the area in an hour.

“They had no warning.

“They heard a roar, and it was on top of them,” Water Wheel Fire and Medical District Fire Chief Ron Sattelmaier said.

Australian woman shot dead in America An Australian woman has been shot dead by police in Minneapolis.

The 40-year-old, was fatally shot in an “officer-involved shooting” in the city’s Fulton

neighbourhood according to police.

The Sydney woman had been living with her fiance and son in Minneapolis.

Minneapolis police con-

firmed the incident in a statement.

“Two Minneapolis police officers responded to a 911 call of a possible assault just north of the 5100 block of Washburn Av-

enue South just before 11.30pm Saturday,” it read. “At one point an officer fired their weapon, fatally striking a woman.

Flashing lights and sirens – get out of the way Matt Markham

lashing lights – a warning, or like luring a moth to the flame?

It’s always an interesting experience to watch how people react to an emergency situation.

Some thrive on it and live for the thrill of chasing the fire truck down the road in search of the associated drama.

Others go the complete opposite and almost run in fear from the sound of a siren or the blinding nature of flashing lights.

Then there’s the absolutely oblivious bunch, you know them.

The ones who decide that they don’t actually need to get out of the way of an emergency service vehicle as it rushes to the scene of an accident, or to try and save someone’s house from fire.

Instead they hug the centre line a little more than normal instead of getting as far to the left as they possibly can.

Or they’re the same people who carry on through an intersection instead of showing a bit of common courtesy and waiting for a fire engine or an ambulance to fly through.

Whether it’s complete ignorance, or a little bit of arrogance, it’s wrong.

And sorry, Ashburton. But we’ve got a problem with it.

Watching the engines or units whip there way out into the district is always an entertaining experience.

You can guarantee there’s always one who hasn’t seen or heard them. And they usually do a mighty fine job of getting in the road.

It’s something that we need to stop.

Those seconds can be the difference between life and death or complete destruction of a house from fire and a saved house.

So, we need to wake up a bit when we are out on the road.

Pay a little more attention to what is going on behind you.

If you’ve ever had a fire engine sneak up behind you when you weren’t paying attention you will know how much of a fright it can give you.

Don’t take it as an opportunity to go and have a wee look either.

Just carry on and let the professionals, or volunteers, do what they do best.

Saving lives and property.

Celebrating the arable industry’s finest N

ew Zealand farmers have a long history of striving for better stock, better pastures and better crop yields.

This is especially the case for arable farmers when harvesting a record yielding crop of wheat, whether it is a personal best for the individual field or a whole farm average.

Mid-Canterbury farmer Eric Watson would have experienced this satisfaction when opening up his world record yielding paddock of wheat earlier this year and monitoring the high numbers on his combine yield meter that was later verified at the weigh bridge.

Success in the arable industry typically flies under the radar in New Zealand as many arable farmers prefer to let their farm’s performance do the talking.

But with a Kiwi farmer breaking a world record for yield for the third time in recent years (Warren Darling barley in 2015 and Chris Dennison in 2015) it is high time we celebrate the world-leading achievements of our farmers.

We did exactly that at the recent Federated Farmers conference.

Around 100 farmers and arable industry stakeholders joined members of the Federation’s Arable Industry Group and United Wheatgrowers for their Annual Wheat Awards and Federated Farmers’ Awards.

We congratulate all those farmers who entered winning wheat samples in RuralCo’s Wheat Awards.

The highlight of the evening was awarding the inaugural Federated Farmers/Bayer Arable Farmer of the Year Award to Eric Watson in recognition of his world record wheat yield but also his life-long contribution to ar-

Speaking at the awards, Bayer’s Scott Hanson said “leaders in the arable industry like Eric help promote New Zealand all over the world and his recent achievements have help put New Zealand on the world stage”.

While much of the focus is on our on-farm achievements of our farmers, Federated Farmers also recognised the achievements of our farmers in advocacy roles. Biosecurity has been a large focus for the federation over the past 18 months through our roles in the velvetleaf, pea weevil and blackgrass incursion responses.

Wairarapa farmer Karen Williams was the inaugural winner of the Federated Farmers Biosecurity Farmer of the Year Award.

Karen was an instrumental part of the grower group and sat on the response Governance Group working hard to make a bad situation better for growers.

Farmers have understood the importance of biosecurity since the earliest days of colonisation.

We all remember the campaign to remove scabies in sheep and campaigns to wash hands after handling dogs.

The frequent trips to the dog dosing strip became the stuff of legend, immortalised in song and cartoon strips.

Restaurants can charge if you don’t turn up Making a booking with a restaurant is a contract and the establishment can charge you if you don’t turn up, Consumer NZ says.

But Mark McGuinness, who owns the Belgian Beer Cafe Tarenhof in central Christchurch and called a group of customers “tossers” on Facebook after only half their 40-person booking showed up, says he doesn’t have any intention of chasing the noshowers for compensation.

McGuinness acknowledges that he probably shouldn’t have made the social media comments, but said people needed to realise flaking on big bookings costs businesses dearly – in wasted food costs and lost revenue from turning down other bookings.

It may be surprising for people to learn that restaurants can charge customers who book but don’t turn up.

In a summary of punters’

rights when dining out at restaurants, Consumer NZ says making a booking “creates a contract which places obligations on both parties”.

“If you don’t turn up, the restaurant can legitimately claim you have broken the contract and caused it to lose business.

“If you realise in advance you won’t be able to make it, let the restaurant know. They’re unlikely to charge if you tell them in reasonable time,” the consumer advocacy service says.

But this cuts both ways and if you’ve booked a table and a restaurant can’t provide one you too

can push for compensation.

“If it can’t provide your table, the restaurant has broken its contract with you,” Consumer NZ says.

“You can claim any expenses you have incurred, such as travelling costs, using a Disputes Tribunal if necessary.”

Farm sales, prices inch down in three months

The number of farms sold in the past three months inched down on the year as did the median price per hectare for all farms, pointing to a softening tone in the rural real estate market, the Real Estate Institute said.

There were 459 sales in the year ended June 2017, 13 fewer than the same period a year earlier, or a decline of 2.8 per cent.

The median price per hectare for all farms sold in the three months to June 2017 was $25,992 versus $26,361 in the same period a year earlier, a decline of 1.4 per cent.

Eight regions recorded increases in sales volumes on the year in the three months ended June.

Otago recorded the largest increase in sales, with 13 more sales, followed by Gisborne where nine more farms were sold.

The Real Estate Institute’s All Farm Price Index, which adjusts for differences in farm size, location and farming type, fell 2.5 per cent in the three months to June compared with the three months to May. It did not provide comparison figures for the three months to June 2016.

Regarding dairy farms, the Real Estate Institute noted that prices were slightly higher at $34,789 per hectare compared to $32,615 per hectare in the three months ended June 2016.

Overall, the median price per hectare for dairy farms has risen 6.7 per cent over the past 12 months as milk prices improve.

On a price per kilo of milksolids basis, the median sales price was $33.45 per kilo of milksolids in the three months to June versus $30.40 per kilo in the three months ended June 2016, a rise of 10 per cent.

Prices for grazing farms, however, eased.

In the three months ended June, the median sales price per hectare for grazing farms was $10,093 compared to $16,604 in the three months ended June 2016. The median price per hectare for grazing farms has fallen 39.2 per cent over the past 12 months.

Horticulture farms were also under some pressure. In the three months to June, the median sales price per hectare was $159,161 compared to $223,165 in the three months to June 2016. The median price per hectare for horticulture farms has fallen 28.7 per cent over the past 12 months, Reinz said.

Delegat’s record year Delegat Group, New Zealand’s largest listed winemaker, has lifted its operating profit guidance after a record year for case sales. The Auckland-based winemaker, whose brands include Oyster Bay, is now projecting $38.5 million in net operating profit for the year ended June 30, 2017, from $37 million in 2016. The company has achieved record case sales of 2.656 million cases, it said.

Xerox The president of Fuji Xerox has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to New Zealand after “inappropriate accounting” came to light at its local arm.

Hiroshi Kurihara, president and representative director of Fuji Xerox, gave the New Zealand outfit an update on the countermeasures taken by the parent company since an independent investigation committee set up by Fujifilm Holdings. “I’d like to re-emphasise that Fuji Xerox and our affiliates take the committee’s findings very seriously and is absolutely committed to resolving past issues and ensuring that there is no recurrence,” Kurihara told Fuji Xerox NZ yesterday.

Focus on safety with farm dogs Rural Women New Zealand representatives visited Netherby School recently to spread the message about the safety of children around dogs.

RWNZ Mid Canterbury president Sandra Curd and secretary Ngaire Brown presented pupils in Room 3 of the school with a copy of the book How to Keep Kids Safe with Dogs, and talked with the children about safety around dogs.

Members of the group are in the process of distributing copies of the book to 20 primary schools in Mid Canterbury, while pre-school educators will receive a Keep Me Safe book, together with pamphlets they can use in their centres.

To complement the schools campaign, Winchmore branch members are donating 16 How to Keep Kids Safe with Dogs books to doctor, dentist and hospital receptions throughout Mid Canterbury.

Perfect storm for maize growers

A perfect storm of bad weather and low prices meant last season was one of the worst ever for New Zealand maize growers, an industry spokesman says.

Late last week the Arable Industry Marketing Initiative released its survey of maize area sown and volumes, which looked at the 2017 harvest, as well as sowing intentions for this spring.

AIMI committee member Hew Dalrymple said a combination of wet weather and low prices meant many growers lost money over the season.

“The weather totally nailed it.

It did a good job of killing maize

in the ground, while it also made the harvest hard.”

Dalrymple said on top of that the price growers were receiving was in the low $300s per tonne, when they really wanted to be receiving up near $400.

Although he was commenting on the industry nationally, Dalrymple said Mid Canterbury growers were in the same boat as the rest of the country, with cooler, wet weather making life tough for most.

He said the only grain growing area in the country that seemed to escape the bad weather and subsequent poor harvest was the west coast of the North Island, which had a good cereals harvest.

The AIMI survey showed that the maize grain harvest was 52 per cent complete as at June 1 (compared to 73 per cent complete at the same time last year), reflecting difficult harvest conditions in many areas.

The estimated total tonnage of 160,700 tonnes (including unharvested grain) was down 24 per cent on last season’s harvest tonnage, as a result of a lower yield (13 per cent down) from a lower harvest area (12 per cent down).

About 88 per cent of the total crop had been sold, leaving 18,600 tonnes unsold as at June 1, (compared to 44,900 tonnes at the same time last year, and 34,600 tonnes at the same time

the previous year). Spring 2017 sowing intentions were an estimated 26 per cent up on last season.

As for maize silage, the harvest for which was finished by June 1 on all survey farms, the estimated total tonnage of 913,000 tonnes DM was down 7 per cent compared to last season’s harvest, as a result of a lower yield (10 per cent down) from a slightly increased harvest area (3 per cent up).

About 50 per cent of the total silage crop had been sold or used, leaving 457,000 tonnes DM unused or/unsold as at June 1, (as compared to 365,000 tonnes DM at the same time last year, and 458,000 tonnes DM at the same

time the previous year).

Spring 2017 sowing intentions at June 1 were slightly up (3 per cent up) on last season.

Dalrymple said the expected increase in the area to be sowed in both gain and silage maize over spring showed that despite the tough season just gone, there was cause for some optimism in the year ahead.

“Things are looking up, particularly with international grain prices. Growers will be looking at $400 (per tonne) as a starting point.

“Buyers may not be too impressed with that but New Zealand growers need some security around their business.”

Deer workshops aim to educate

About 40 rural professionals braved the snow last week to attend workshops aimed at improving their understanding of deer farmer requirements.

Deer Industry New Zealand passion to profit manager Innes Moffitt said the two one-day workshops, held on Wednesday and Thursday at Panthers Rock Bar and Café in Mayfield, followed similar events in Southland last month.

Moffitt said the aim was to give rural professionals – such as bankers, agronominists, stock and station agents and fertiliser reps – a better understanding of the deer industry, the seasonal requirements of deer, deer product marketing and the reasons for seasonal and market price variations.

“Our objective is not to try and create deer specialists in one day, but to give attendees knowledge about where further information exists when they have a question for a deer farmer.

“We are very pleased with the responses we have received, not only the number of requests to attend, but also the interaction of attendees and the breadth of services expressing interest in learning more about the deer industry.

“We have representatives from all main banks, the stock and station agencies, fertiliser companies, animal nutrition specialist, agronomists, feed manufacturers, vets and marketing company, representatives.”

Moffitt said DINZ was extremely grateful to Mid Canterbury deer farmer Mike Salvesen, who provided a significant amount of information on his own deer farm, and conducted a tour of the property to allow attendees to see and discuss real deer farm data.

Those who attended received a workbook to go through on the day, along with a set of deer facts to keep as a resource.

A similar event will be held in Turangi next month.

Deer Industry New Zealand held a rural professionals day similar to the two held in Mid Canterbury last week, at Garston in Southland last month.

MARKET REPORT Dairy A very wet week made soil conditions puggy and feed utilisation rates plummet as some managers used large amounts of supplements to keep stock well fed.

The only positive, with this rainy cold period, is the recharge of the aquifers, after the previous three dry winters saw groundwater levels severely depleted.

Good cow condition has helped animals cope with this weather challenge and next month’s pasture growth rates will have a big influence on feed supply this spring.

Whole milk powder futures have lifted in July and processors prepare for the bobby calf harvest, urging farmers to book space early.

Russia warns New Zealand that dairy restrictions are possible, after an export butter sample tested positive for the presence of an antibiotic, and reinforces how fussy managers must be to isolate any treated milk.

The Dairy Hub has been opened in Southland as the partnership between Dairy NZ, AgResearch and the Southern Dairy Development Trust joined forces to ensure science improves profits and solves dairy problems in the deep south.

Farmers in the Horizons regional area are in limbo over a halt to consents with their One Plan as regulators grapple with the discrepancies of Overseer to identify surplus nutrients in the soil.

Wool The first sale of the new season in the south saw prices firming but from a low base.

Sales were only made from 77 per cent of the offering and brokers report about 20 per cent of new season’s fleece and oddments were withdrawn before the sale.

The market was cautious even with a weaker currency but finer crossbred fleece and first lambs did lift in price.

Wools of NZ have offered a lambs’ wool contract for the 2018 season of $4.50/kg clean for 28-30 micron product with tight specifications and this is reported to be about $1/kg ahead of the present spot market.

Beef More easing in beef schedules this week as most NZ exporters have sold well ahead for this time of year.

Domestic chilled supply is also running ahead of consumption and is under some price pressure, but with the very wet cold conditions this could alter the volume of animals offered for harvest.

The US put a ban on imports of Brazilian beef into that country after shipments of product failed to meet that country’s tough regulatory standards.

Deer Venison schedules are still stable but demand for product remains strong with one company removing the discount on females older than three years to entice more animals into a market short of product. Research has shown product from well-fed older females retains its tenderness and quality unlike its male counterparts which toughens with age.

Keeping the kids amused

T

here has been a great deal of interest in our new exhibition Meet You at The Radiant Hall which looks back at the fun and activities staged at this venue.

As expected, those people who attended balls, dances, concerts, and even a boxing match, have been most excited and many have told us stories, which we are adding to our files.

However, something we didn’t expect was the popularity of our activities area.

Apart from designing and installing the actual exhibition, museum staff spend quite some time thinking about how we can connect the theme of the objects on exhibition, and their story, to the younger hands-on audience.

So this exhibition has featured peg people. We have supplied our craft table with the humble (and old-fashioned) wooden clothes pegs, and lots of crafty stash – fabric, felt, pipe cleaners and shiny bits and pieces. Youngsters are invited to create a peg person, either to take home as a souvenir, or add to what we hope will be a party of peg people dressed up in their finery.

Some of the creations are most ingenious from party frocks to pirates, mermaids and even a few super heroes.

We welcome the children and their caregivers and are always

keen to see what they have made. During the school holidays, and especially during such appalling weather, it is not surprising that we have had very good numbers and sometimes there is a sizable throng of people around the activity table.

What has surprised us is that children of all ages seem to be undertaking this activity as something completely new and different.

Holidays Not so long ago, every mother or grandmother would have an impressive collection of things to occupy children during school holidays, especially when playing outside wasn’t an option.

Scrapbooking was popular and the Ashburton Museum has a number of scrapbooks which feature ‘scraps’ – little designs made specially for scrap books (obviously) or pages cut out from magazines.

My mother had two of the royal family, which she decorated with little drawings. Not only did it keep her busy when her cousin caught scarlet fever; going through the scrapbook entertained her as well.

Everyday objects, such as pegs, were often revamped. This was a perfect activity, as not only would the child be kept busy designing the item, but the finished object

Honouring the Fallen During the period of the First World War, 1914 to 1915, many men from the Ashburton District signed up to fight for the Empire against the German army. Many did not return — almost 450 from Ashburton were killed. The first Ashburton men were killed on April 25, 1915 — the first Anzac Day. Ashburton philanthropist and patriot Frederick Ferriman presented a special flag and a flagpole to the families of those men.

The Ashburton Museum with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains, has erected in front of the Museum one of the original Ferriman flagpoles, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag. An original flag is on display in the Museum.

became a play thing.

I can recall my aunt keeping old or odd socks and with wool, pipe cleaners, buttons, and other found objects, my cousin and I would transform them into puppets and then perform ad hoc plays for the family. It was quite an occasion with my ‘arty’ cousin making tickets and me singing at intermission! My aunt, no doubt grateful we kept out of mischief for a day, provided a splendid afternoon tea.

Education Such basic crafts were an important part of children’s education. It taught ideas such as colour identification and developed manual dexterity. It required children to use their imagination, and increase their communication and social skills.

Not only was it fun and a chance to be creative. Such activities were designed to entertain both boys and girls. A peg could be a pretty party person or a gun.

Fabric could make a doll’s dress or a pirate’s patch.

There was no expectation that the item would be retained (although of course some were) but there was a freedom knowing that the saved resource wasn’t expensive or important, so after it had been used, it could be thrown out.

Just rummaging through the latest pile of ‘found’ objects had so much excitement and potential. I’m sure mothers had just as much fun sourcing the materials, and seeing them used.

Entertaining Sometimes we imagine that the children of today have very high expectations and are hard to entertain. After seeing the intense faces of children and their caregivers, and the time spent searching through the materials we have on offer, it obviously isn’t true.

They may have PlayStations and iPods at home, but deep

down they have the same creative streak as we did when we were little.

A few times I have overheard children ask if they can make more things when they go home.

Perhaps we have ignited a spark with our activities. It may be something they hadn’t experienced before, or maybe children appreciate the time they can spend with their grandparent or friend on a shared project? We are not really sure why peg people are catching on, but it is rewarding to see so many real people relishing the activity.

We do hope that people continue to visit the exhibition and relive the fun of The Radiant.

Melting Mediterranean lamb rolls The flavours rolled within these melting Mediterranean lamb rolls will be sure to wow your guests.

Serves 4-6 Lamb rolls 12 Quality Mark lamb schnitzels (or use 6-7 beef) 150g piece of mozzarella, sliced 1-2 marinated red capsicums, sliced 1 red onion, finely sliced 3/4 C pistachio nuts, roughly chopped 3/4 C prunes, halved 1C fresh coriander leaves Zest of 2 lemons 1T ground cumin To serve Chopped fresh coriander Juice of one lemon ■ Lamb: Lay a schnitzel out on a clean chopping board. If you are using beef schnitzels, you may want to cut them in half so you have two pieces to roll up. If your schnitzels are quite thick, bang them out thinner with a rolling pin or meat mallet to make them larger – the thinner they are the better, as you have more area for rolling. Near one edge of a piece of schnitzel, place a slice of cheese, a slice of capsicum, a few pieces of onion, a few pistachios, half a prune, a few coriander leaves, a sprinkle of lemon zest and a pinch of cumin. Season with salt and pep-

per and roll up carefully. Secure the roll with a toothpick or bamboo skewer by threading it through the meat a couple of times where it joins. Repeat for the remainder of the schnitzels.

■ Brush the rolls all over with a little oil and season with salt and pepper as required.

■ Place on a hot barbecue grill or in a frying pan on a high heat, turning every couple of minutes to brown evenly. It will take about 10 minutes for the lamb or beef rolls to cook through.

■ To serve: Remove from the heat, sprinkle with fresh coriander, a squeeze of lemon and a dash of oil. I’d serve these with garlic pita breads and a fresh green salad.

Despite there being a nearly 20-point difference on the table, Cambridge and Wakanui couldn’t be split at half-time, with the scores level at 1-1.

Eventually Cambridge were able to take the chances they had

been creating and secure a 3-2 victory.

In the women’s first division competition, Hampstead’s hopes of securing the important top spot for the playoffs were hampered as they were pegged back by third placed Cambridge in a 1-1 draw.

Playing on Sunday, Hampstead/Collegians hopes of making the top four were hurt after they were unable to pick up a win in their must-win match against Geraldine.

It was a low scoring match, with Geraldine just squeaking by 1-0.

Second-baseman Joel Evans has come up trumps when his Black Sox needed it most, smashing a grand slam homerun to propel New Zealand to their seventh world softball title at Whitehorse, Yukon.

Trailling Australia 3-2 in the final, the Kiwis loaded bases, as Aussie pitching ace Adam Folkard began to tire.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Wayne Laula reached base on a grounder, Folkard hit catcher Kallan Compain to gift him a base and then pinch hitter Josh Harbrow cleared the infield to fill the bases.

Initially, lead-off batter Campbell Enoka was unable to capitalise, struck out swinging, but next up, Evans made no mistake, sending the ball over the centrefield fence and out of the stadium to bring his team-mates home.

“We got to a stage today where we scoreboard-watched for a couple of innings and just got a little bit tense,” reflected Black Sox coach Mark Sorenson.

“We just needed to relax the guys ... we needed a couple of runners on base to create some pressure and an opportunity.

“We weren’t able to capitalise on it an inning before, but in the sixth inning, we were able to load the bases and then Joel Evans comes up with probably the biggest hit of his career.”

With just one inning left to respond, Australian slugger Nick Shailes also “went yard” to narrow the deficit 6-4, but it was a case of too little, too late.

Black Sox relief pitcher Nick Hayes held his nerve to secure the last three outs, striking out Brendan O’Byrne and James Todhunter, before Andrew Kirkpatrick grounded out.

New Zealand had opened the scoring in their first at-bat, when captain Nathan Nukunuku’s sacrifice fly-ball brought lead-off batter Campbell Enoka home.

But as Black Sox pitcher Josh Pettett began to struggle with his control, the Aussies answered with two runs in the third inning and another in the fourth to take the lead.

The Kiwis got one back in the fifth inning, when they filled the bases and veteran Brad Rona’s sacrifice brought Enoka home.

They weren’t able to take full toll of that opportunity, though, and needed Evans’ heroics in their next turn at bat to seal the comeback.

New Zealand had made 10 consecutive world championship finals, with their last victory coming under very similar circumstances against Venezuela at North Harbour’s Rosedale Park four years ago.

On that occasion, captain Rhys Casley hit a three-run homer in the third innings for a 4-1 victory.

But this was their first success on Canadian soil, where the home team were defending champions entering this tournament.

Federer makes history After Roger Federer closed out a Wimbledon final that was more of a coronation than a contest with an ace, he sat in his changeover chair and wiped away tears.

That is when it hit him: His wait for record-breaking No. 8 was over.

Until then, Federer wasn’t focused on the notion of winning the grass-court tournament more often than any other man in the history of an event first held in 1877.

All he’d been concerned with, consumed with, was being healthy enough to compete at a high level and, he hoped, to win a title, regardless of what the total count would be.

Capping a marvellous fortnight in which he never dropped a set, Federer won his eighth Wimbledon trophy and 19th Grand Slam championship overall by overwhelming Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 in merely 1 hour, 41 minutes Sunday.

“Wimbledon was always my favourite tournament. Will always be my favourite tournament.

“My heroes walked the grounds here and walked the courts here.

“Because of them, I think I became a better player, too,” said Federer, who will turn 36 next month and is the oldest male champion at the All England Club in the Open era, which began in 1968.

“To mark history here at Wimbledon really means a lot to me just because of all of that, really,” he said.

“It’s that simple.”

His first major title came at

Wimbledon in 2003, and was followed by others in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

He won again in 2009 and 2012.

But then he lost finals in 2014 and 2015 to Novak Djokovic.

He couldn’t be sure another final, let alone title, was possible a year ago, when he lost in the semi-finals, then took the rest of 2016 off to let his surgically repaired left knee heal.

“It’s been a long road,” he said.

With clouds overhead and a bit of chill in the air, Federer’s early play was symptomatic of jitters.

For everything he’s accomplished, for all of the bright lights and big settings to which he’s become accustomed, the guy many have labelled the “GOAT” — Greatest of All Time — admits to feeling heavy legs and jumbled thoughts to this day.

It was Federer, not Cilic, who double-faulted in his first two service games. And it was Federer, not Cilic, who faced the initial break point, in the fourth game.

Cilic said afterward he developed a painful blister on his left foot during his semi-final, and that affected his ability to summon the intimidating serves that carried him to his lone Grand Slam title at the 2014 US Open, where he surprisingly beat Federer in the semi-finals.

This one was all Federer, who had been tied at seven championships with Pete Sampras and William Renshaw in what’s still officially called Gentlemen’s Singles.

Sampras won all but one of his in the 1990s; Renshaw won each of his in the 1880s, when the previous year’s winner advanced automatically to the final.

But Cilic netted a return, beginning a run of 17 points in a row won by Federer on his serve.

He would never be confronted with another break point.

“I gave it my best,” Cilic said.

“That’s all I could do.”

In the next game, Federer broke to lead 3-2. He broke again to take that set when Cilic doublefaulted, walked to the changeover and slammed his racket.

Cilic sat and covered his head with a white towel.

With Federer up 3-0 in the second set, Cilic cried while he was visited by a doctor and trainer.

He said that was not so much a result of his foot’s pain as the idea that he could not play well enough to present a challenge.

“Very tough emotionally,” said Cilic, whose foot was re-taped by a trainer after the second set.

“I knew that I cannot give my best on the court.”

It might not have mattered.

Federer was, as he’d been all tournament, flawless, the first man in 41 years to win Wimbledon without ceding a set.

Against Cilic, he had 23 winners, only eight unforced errors.

This caps a remarkable reboot for Federer, who departed Wimbledon a year ago with a lot of doubts: His body was letting him down for the first time in his career. He skipped the Rio Olympics, the US Open and everything else in an attempt to try to get healthy. It worked. And how.

Feeling refreshed and fully fit, Federer returned to the tour in January and was suddenly playing like the guy of old, rather than like an old guy.

In a turn-back-the-clock moment, he faced rival Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open final and, with a fifth-set comeback, won.

Those who had written Federer off needed to grab their erasers.

Federer skipped this year’s claycourt circuit to be in top shape for the grass courts he loves so dearly.

Yesterday’s victory made Federer 31-2 in 2017, with a tourleading five titles.

“On one side, yes, it surprises me. On the other side, I know he’s able to do so many things. So it’s not surprising,” coach Severin Luthi said. “But when it happens, it’s amazing.”

Manly in cap probe The NRL integrity unit is to visit Manly offices this week to continue its salary cap investigation, CEO Todd Greenberg says. Sea Eagles owner Scott Penn has called on the governing body to hasten its probe on alleged secret payments to at least one player amid fears the saga is damaging the Manly brand.

Filly staying close to home Leading southern filly La Diosa will be sparingly raced when she returns to competition in the new term.

The New Zealand 1000 Guineas winner has begun her build-up toward a four-year-old campaign after a break following mixed results from her Sydney campaign.

“She’s been back for three weeks and she’s ticking over nicely,” said Matt Brown, who trains the daughter of So You Think with his wife Mandy.

“We’re not making any great plans and she’ll probably have a quiet year and we’ll see how she comes up with maybe a couple of starts at Riccarton.”

Options there include the Coupland’s Bakeries Mile or the Valachi Downs Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes.

A winner at two, La Diosa blossomed as a spring three-year-old to collect Listed victories in the Canterbury Belle Stakes and the Barneswood Farm Stakes before she was too good for Bella Gioia in the 1000 Guineas.

She crossed the Tasman earlier this year and made an instant impact when she beat Omei Sword in the Surround Stakes in her Australian debut.

Unfortunately, that was the only high point of the trip as she failed in subsequent starts on heavily rainaffected ground in the Gr.1 Coolmore, the Gr.1 Vinery Stud Stakes and in the Gr.1 ATC Oaks.

“We know she doesn’t like wet tracks, but she handled the first one because it was loose,” Brown said.

“She was pretty tired after that and she had a good break. She looks a lot stronger, she’s pretty happy in herself.”

Stakes winner Pacorus has come through his latest outing in good shape. He finished fourth over a mile at Te Rapa on Saturday in his final outing before the Listed Taumarunui Gold Cup on July 29.

Shooters up against best of the north

Come August, eight members of the Coronation Target Shooting Club will be packing their bags and heading to Palmerston North to represent the South Island against the North Island, with a little extra incentive to shoot straight.

They will shoot against the North Island on Saturday, with the top shooters donning the Silver Fern on the Sunday to compete in a postal match against Great Bryan Britain and the Channel Islands.

The match is a full New Zealand representative match, which club captain Nina McKenzie said was an awesome event to have the chance to take part in.

McKenzie said it was “massive” for one club to have eight members making the team, when most clubs would only have two to three representatives, with some having none.

“As well as those who made it we had a brace of members who nominated themselves at the start of the year and had never done it before and were not far off,” she said.

McKenzie said many of the shooters would be taking part in multiple teams, with one junior taking part in three events.

The teams include junior or under-21, veterans or over-60s, women’s and an open grade.

With Olympic and ComHunter monwealth level shooters nominated for both teams, McKenzie said it would be a great opportunity for the shooters to experience an event with some of the best.

BOVETT, Dorothy Elisabeth – Sadly passed away on July 14, 2017. Sadly missed, dedicated office bearer and loyal member of Ashburton Senior Citizens Inc. BURGESS, Mavis Eva – On July 16, 2017. Peacefully at Coldstream House, Ashburton. Aged 93 years.

Dearly loved wife of the late Jock. Much loved mother and mother in law of Gordon and Darky, Jennifer and John Tilby, Noelene and Malcolm McGrath, Lynley Passey, Judy and Phil Kouka, Cheryl and Steve Allen, and Kathy and Max Cawte. Treasured Nana of her 15 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Sport Crotty staying put All Blacks and Crusaders centre Ryan Crotty has extended his stay in New Zealand rugby until the end of 2018. The 28-year-old, who has pulled on the black jumper 27 times, said he was not ready to play rugby outside of New Zealand. He didn’t rule out staying in the country after 2018, with a 2019 World Cup midfield berth his for the taking. “I like to take things one year at a time and, when I thought about where I could picture myself in 2018, I just didn’t feel like my time here in New Zealand was up yet,” Crotty said.

Mid Canterbury Netball star Kate Lloyd has continued her impressive year on the court after being crowned a world champion yesterday.

Lloyd was part of the New Zealand U-21 team that successfully defended their title as

the champions of the Netball World Youth Cup in Botswana.

The Kiwis downed familiar foes Australia in the final, taking out a 60-57 victory in a close match in Gaborone early yesterday (NZ time).

Australia had the better of New Zealand for much of the first half, leading 17-14 at the

quarter time after a slick start to the match.

By halftime the New Zealanders were beginning to find their feet, cutting Australia’s lead back to just one goal.

While New Zealand were finding their rhythm on attack the Australian shooting line began to falter, as the pressure being

applied all game began to take its toll and the Kiwi side stalked out to a 45-41 lead at the final turn.

The former Ashburton College student’s selection came off the back of strong performances in both the Beko Netball league and Mainland Tactix side in the past year.

Hole-in-one with a difference for Fox Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox captured one of the more memorable pars of his career during another top five finish on the European Tour.

Fox has finished tied for the fourth at the Scottish Open at Dundonald Links after a final

round two-under 70 to take home 223,241 euros.

The par three sixth provided his shot of the day after he went out of bounds from the tee.

Fox’s third top 10 finish in his last three tournaments puts him in fine form ahead of the Open Championship.
