Great weather, good snow, live music and free icecream drew a record-breaking crowd to Mt Hutt on Saturday, putting pressure on carparking.

Mountain operations manager James Urquhart said Mt Hutt was one of only two skifields open in Canterbury for the middle weekend of the school holidays, generating a huge crowd.

cebook to complain about waiting for more than an hour at the information booth for buses to ferry them to the top of the mountain.

“We filled up the top carpark, then we went to the spillover carparks, when they got full we closed the road at the information booth,” Mr Urquhart said.

“We still had to move everyone from those spillover carparks before we moved down to get those at the booth.”

He was unaware of anyone left at the

bottom of the hill for more than an hour.

Mr Urquhart would not disclose exact numbers due to commercial sensitivity, however said thousands of skiers and snowboarders had a fantastic day in spectacular weather conditions.

“We have so many vehicles arriving with just one or two people, that’s the tricky part, if people carpooled everyone is going to get into the carpark.”

Initiatives have been put place to encourage carpooling, with draws for petrol and food vouchers offered to those who arrive with three or more in a vehicle.

A Facebook page has also been set up to encourage ride-sharing to the skifield.

“As a business we want to be busy during school holidays – if we’re not we’ve got some serious problems, so we were happy with the way Saturday panned out,” Mr Urquhart said.

“We gave away more than 1000 icecreams, we had live music on the deck and the kiddy castle bouncing away – it was a great day.”

Water application denied Environment Canterbury says a dairy farmer’s application to vary the conditions of an existing water-take to include the commercial bottling of water cannot be processed.

plication was not within the scope of what could be processed as a change of conditions. “The application also cannot be made as a new application as it would be for a prohibited activity,” he said.

Local Birthright joins forces with Chch

Ashburton’s support organisation for single-parent families, Birthright, turns 50 next month and it’s celebrating that milestone by but putting itself in liquidation.

But rather than being seen as the end of the organisation, the liquidation is about a rebirth, says its chairman John Driscoll.

“What we’re doing is future proofing the organisation, making ourselves more viable,” he said.

The need for Birthright today is as great as it was when it was established, with between 70 and 80 single-parent families on the books, but like most organisations it struggled to fill its volunteer ranks and secure funding, Mr Driscoll said.

Its answer has been to join forces with the larger Christchurch organisation. That’s a deal that’s been in negotiation for almost a year and one that came into effect on July 1.

“Christchurch was looking to expand and we had the idea of forming a new Birthright Canterbury Trust that would see Ashburton and Christchurch working together,” Mr Driscoll said.

John Driscoll funds, Ashburton will be much better off as it will be under the umbrella of the Christchurch funding manager and that will hand it a much better deal, he said.

Ashburton clients will still continue to work with Ashburton’s field worker, but under the new trust, her part time position could eventually become full time offering a much better deal for clients, Mr Driscoll said.

On July 27, at a public meeting, the Ashburton organisation will officially put itself out of business, liquidating its society and putting any assets into the Birthright Canterbury Trust.

■ TRAINS ON THE PLAINS

Trains on the Plains proves popular Trains of the Plains was a popular destination at the weekend with more than 500 people turning up to the Tinwald Hall to view model trains in action.

The creators of the 17 layouts on show travelled the length and breadth of the South Island to take part in the show. Each layout had its own theme and countless hours had been spent on minute and intricate details.

It was the fifth biennial show the Ashburton enthusiasts had staged.

“We started off with 12 layouts and we’ve managed to fit a few more in each year,” organiser Andy Munro said.

Paying the power bill might be a struggle for the elderly in many parts of New Zealand, but in Ashburton it appears most are managing to cope with the cost of keeping warm.

Natalie Blampied, secretary of GreyPower Ashburton, said she pays her power bill when it comes through.

She said while it was one of her biggest bills, it was a necessity so it was given priority.

“We just turn the heat pump on when we need it and we just pay it.

“We haven’t had to cut back on heating,” she said Members of the Ashburton 206 Club had a similar approach to paying power bills.

Club member Una Green said

it was a matter of paying the bill because heating was a necessity.

“Mine is a direct debt so I don’t see it, I just pay,” she said.

Most of the 206 group used heat pumps as their source of heating.

Evans Chibanguza, a social worker at Ashburton Hospital and president of St Vincent de Paul, said while they helped individuals pay power bills, few of them were elderly people.

St Vincent de Paul is one of several organisaitons and support services in Ashburton that help pay power bills for people who are struggling to make ends meet.

He said they have had a couple of people come through them after seeing the Budget Advisory Service, but most were young families with children.

“People struggle a bit through winter,” he said.

Minute’s silence A minute’s silence will be held at the French Embassy in Wellington today to pay tribute to the victims of the Bastille Day attack in Nice.

The embassy is opening a book of condolence for people to sign as the world rallies to support the stunned European nation.

Eighty-four people, including 10 children, were killed and more than 250 injured when a 31-year-old French Tunisian man sped through a crowd in a truck mowing down everyone in his path as people celebrated the French national day.

Some international tourists were caught up in the carnage but there were no New Zealanders in the casualty toll. In a statement the embassy said staff would observe a minute of silence at noon in front of the Manners Street offices to pay tribute to the victims. - NZME

Boy fighting for his life A 5-year-old boy badly burned in an accident in Te Kuiti is still fighting for his life. The youngster suffered burns to 35 per cent of his body on Friday night when his shirt was set alight by a gas heater.

The boy’s screams alerted his family who put him under a cold shower and called emergency services. He was taken to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition, but transferred to Middlemore Hospital on Saturday.

Ashburton College students have sung their way to the top of an Australian performing arts competition.

The school’s Phoenix Chorus has qualified for the national finals of Glee! 2016 which will take place in the Gold Coast in the first week of August.

The chorus, as well as four soloists, and the senior girls’ group Phoenix Ladies all made it into the finals after entering video auditions in April.

Choral manager Carolyn Clough said the group found out their success at the end of June and have been busy getting the trip organised ever since.

They had been fundraising since they entered the competition in the hope of making the finals but never believed they would get in, she said.

“It’s so cool, we’ve never entered before.

“It’s a premier national performing arts competition.”

Schools from states in Australia have to go through the state championships to get into the finals and Ashburton College was able to enter through the Somewhere Down Under section via video link for remote schools.

Mayfield Lions donate $16,000

Mayfield Lions have donated a total of $16,000 to two Ashburton’s health support groups.

The Blind Foundation and the Diabetes Society both received $8000 to fund different projects.

The money was raised through the annual Mayfield Lions charity golf match, which has been running since 1979.

Tournament organiser, Roger Lake, said the club selects organisations to donate money to each year.

“Our president is blind, so we thought it was a good opportunity for the blind community of Ashburton,” he said.

Dennis Swaney, chairman of the Blind Foundation, said there were more than 100 blind people in the Ashburton District and funds were needed to ensure they had the support they needed.

“Mostly this is used to get them to meetings and getting them out of the house,” he said.

The Diabetes Society is putting its share towards funding research into the use of stem cells as a cure for type one diabetes.

The research is being led by Dr Jim Faed at the Dunedin School of Medicine.

Lions District Centennial Project Director Neil Blake said the research project is called Chasing a Cure for type one diabetes, and the money would go towards buying a stem cell growth accelerator.

Kelvin Boult came across his Callaway Corvette by complete accident.

He was originally planning on buying a Corvette Stingray from his good friend Brian Box, but wanted to know more about the car first.

“I contacted the Christchurch Corvette Club, who recommended a Corvette collector who had restored several Stingrays, so I gave him a ring.

“During our conversation about Stingrays he asked me if I would be interested in buying a later model Corvette he had for sale,” Kelvin said.

He wasn’t, but said yes anyway, just to be polite.

When Kelvin saw the Corvette he said he went weak at the knees.

In front of him was a twin turbo C4 Callaway which, upon closer inspection, looked like it has just been driven off the showroom floor.

“When he told me he wanted $65,000 for it I experienced heart palpitations,” Kelvin said.

Luck seemed to be on his side when it was revealed the owner was funding his next car purchase and Kelvin managed to talk the price down.

“I still had to sell my collection of pinball machines to help fund the purchase.

“It was worth every penny and then some,” he said.

Only 184 twin turbo C4s were made and Kelvin owns number 40, also known as the only twin turbo C4 Callaway Corvette in the country.

Under the hood, there is a V8 engine which can push the car to its top speed of 286 km/h and a signature from Reeves Callaway, the founder of Callaway Cars Inc. “The reason behind Reeves personally autographing this car is a mystery, but I’m still investigating,” Kelvin said.

The C4 is a convertible, which is the source of one of Kelvin’s favourite memories in the car.

“My son came to visit about three years ago, so we went cruising around the back roads with the roof down, at 210 km/h,” he said.

It is also the source of his not-so-favourite memory.

“I was driving around some open roads with the top down in summer and when I got home I had wind burn on top of sunburn,” he said.

Kelvin said one of the many reasons he loved the car is the handling.

“It’s not like other high performance V8s, you could it drive around town like mum’s shopping basket and you wouldn’t know it was aV8.”

Kelvin may not have the Corvette for much longer as he has put it on the market.

“I’ve been offered a car which goes twice as fast,” he said.

Overflowing carpark really not a big deal

S

ocial media is a strange fish.

Once those forced to wait in queues, such as the people waiting at the info booth on the Mt Hutt access road on Saturday, may have grumbled to each other, these days they haul out their phones for a public whine.

Get over it!

Overflowing carparks on a mountain, with a view in a million, are an entirely first world problem and one outside the control of the mountain staff.

What do you expect on a fantastic day in the midst of the school holidays with live music and free icecream on offer? Add to that the fact Mt Hutt was one of just two skifields open in Canterbury and you have a destination guaranteed to attract thousands.

And to an overwhelming extent skiers and boarders appear to have had a great day on the hill.

For the handful of people who let a 40-minute wait for transport ruin their day, let’s take a quick stroll down memory lane – it’s not all that long ago we expected 40 minute queues to catch the tee bar on Mt Hutt – and without mobile phones to tell all and sundry how hard done by we were.

Some of us can go back further to the days of nutcracker tows on rustic, ungroomed skifields – which required significant hikes from the carpark to access in the first place.

The staff on the mountain this weekend worked hard to accommodate a record-breaking crowd and transported those stranded at the info booth as quickly as was possible.

Mountain manager James Urquhart rightly suggests carpooling as a remedy to the situation and some savvy snow lovers have set up a Facebook page to connect with others who require a ride, or have room to spare beforehand.

It would more positive to make use of your mobile phone to organise a ride up the hill than to complain because you got up too late to nab a prime park.

But if you’re already on the hill, here’s a thought – relax, put down your phones and enjoy the scenery, talk to each other and make the most of the fact you have the privilege of choosing to spend a day on the slopes.

Addressing falls plus the Food Act O

ver the last week there have been some good news stories coming out of Government announcements. In this column I want to discuss two of these, both of which impact on and benefit older people and all of us who like to eat out or purchase food. $30m to reduce falls for older New Zealanders If you are aged over 65 you have a 1 in 3 chance of falling with between 10 per cent and 20 per cent of those falls resulting in an injury or death. If you are aged over 80, the chances are 1 in 2.

Falls are the most common cause of injury in elderly people which is why ACC is investing $30.5 million over four years to support new and existing initiatives aimed at preventing falls and resulting injuries.

The investment will boost work being done by local health organisations and community partners to provide better services

for those at risk of falls and those who have been injured in a fall.

We all know people have had falls and understand the devastating impact fall injuries have both physically and emotionally.

The number of people aged 65 years and older expected to double to around 1.2 million by 2035, when they will make up almost one quarter of the population, and with falls being the most common and costly cause of injury for those aged over 65 preventative programmes back good sense.

Last year, the cost of fall-related claims in this age group was

around $163 million, and this is projected to reach between $296 million and $418 million annually by 2025. ACC’s investment therefore makes good financial sense as our population ages.

There is no single cause of falls.

ACC’s investment recognises that a holistic approach is needed, tackling a range of factors that together make our older people more at risk of falling.

1000 registrations under Food Act Last week the 1000th registration under the Food Act was celebrated.

It is just over three months since the new Food Act came in to force and it is fantastic to have 1000 businesses already registered. This is a testament to the work that has been put in to make this new act easy for both businesses and local authorities to work with.

the Rangitata electorate, Columbus Café in Timaru. Canterbury and particularly South Canterbury have been leading the way in adopting the Food Act. Having 1000 businesses registered shows that the new law is off to a successful start, while also illustrating what a vibrant food industry we have in New Zealand, as many of those registrations are new businesses.

New businesses have to operate under the Food Act straight away, while existing businesses have time to change over to the new law. Around 44,000 food businesses will need to register in the next three years.

The Food Act changes the way food safety is regulated, taking a risk-based approach to food safety. It brings in tailored requirements for higher and lower risk activities, and reduces the regulatory burden on businesses who handle their responsibilities well.

Plotters rounded up Turkish authorities have rounded up nearly 3000 suspected military plotters and ordered thousands of judges detained after thwarting a coup by rebels using tanks and attack helicopters to try to topple President Tayyip Erdogan.

For several hours at the weekend violence shook Turkey’s two main cities, as the armed faction which tried to seize power blocked a bridge in Istanbul and strafed the headquarters of Turkish intelligence and parliament in Ankara.

At least 265 people were killed.

An official said 161 of them were mostly civilians and police officers, while the remaining 104 were coup supporters.

But the coup attempt crumbled as Erdogan rushed back to Istanbul from a Mediterranean holiday and urged people to take to the streets to support his government against plotters he accused of trying to kill him.

“They will pay a heavy price for this,” said Erdogan, launching a purge of the armed forces, which last used force to stage a successful coup more than 30 years ago.

“This uprising is a gift from God to us because this will be a reason to cleanse our army.”

Among those detained were top military commanders, including the head of the Second Army which protects the country’s borders with Syria, Iraq and Iran, state-run Anadolu news agency said.

Perry delivers soaring vocals on the song, Rise, to match inspirational lyrics, which include the line, “Victory is in your veins”. The song is being released ahead of next month’s Olympics and Perry says NBC has chosen to use it as an anthem for the Rio Games. Perry has also put out a video for the song featuring Olympic athletes, including Gabrielle Douglas, Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt. Perry explains in a statement that she released the song now instead of waiting for her next album because there’s “a need for the world to unite”.

The government declared the situation under control, saying 2839 people had been rounded up, from foot soldiers to senior officers, including those who formed “the backbone” of the rebellion.

Authorities also began a major crackdown in the judiciary over suspected links to US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, removing from their posts and ordering the

detention of nearly 3000 prosecutors and judges, including from top courts.

Erdogan has blamed the coup on supporters of Gulen, who he has frequently accused of trying to foment uprising in the military, media and judiciary.

Ten members of the High Council of Judges and Prosecutors and two members of the Constitutional Court have already been detained, officials said.

366 migrants Attacker ‘radicalised quickly’ saved from boats in Med Rescuers saved 366 migrants from rickety boats trying to cross the Mediterranean to Italy but at least 20 people were reported to have drowned, Italian police say.

The survivors, who were rescued in four separate operations, were crammed onto three rubber dinghies and a wooden fishing boat.

They were all taken to the Sicilian port of Augusta, where they were questioned by the Italian police unit Interforce, which combats illegal immigration.

The Norwegian ship Siem Pilot went to the aid of one dinghy that sank in the Sicilian Channel, but many migrants were already in the sea when it arrived, Antonio Panzanaro, an Interforce official, told Reuters.

One corpse was recovered but survivors said that at least 20 people had drowned before the ship arrived, he said.

There were 82 women and 25 children among the 366 people rescued, he said.

The survivors were mainly from Nigeria, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Bangladesh.

Seven people were arrested from the four boats, including their drivers, on suspicion of people-trafficking, he said.

Perry releases new song

The man who killed at least 84 people and injured more than 200 in Nice appears to have become radicalised very quickly, a French minister says, just hours after Islamic State seemed to claim responsibility for the attack.

On Thursday Tunisian national Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, was killed by police after driving a delivery truck for two kilometres through crowds of people along Nice’s main promenade as a fireworks display to celebrate Bastille Day was coming to an end.

People who are susceptible to IS extremist organisation messages can be convinced without prior training to commit extremely brutal crimes, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said.

At the same time, Cazeneuve said the 31-year-old wasn’t known to police to be radicalised.

Reports published in the name of two IS media outlets said that the perpetrator was one of the group’s “soldiers”, although they did not mention whether there had been any prior co-ordination with the group.

The claims were published on social media channels in the name of IS’s Aamaq news agency and in an online audio file of the daily news bulletin from the group’s alBayan radio.

DPA could not independently verify the authenticity of the postings, but they were in line with previous claims by the group and were widely republished by its supporters.

The perpetrator was acting in response to the group’s call for attacks on citizens of countries taking part in an international coalition fighting IS in its Iraqi and Syrian territories, the statements said.

Analysts say IS is happy to claim such attackers as members, even if they had no prior contact with it, as long as they have stated that they pledge their allegiance to IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Investigators are still working to establish a motive for attack and have not yet confirmed whether the perpetrator had contacts with radicalised Islamists.

On Friday Prime Minister Manuel Valls linked the attack to religious extremism.

“This is a terrorist who without doubt in one way or another was linked with radical Islamism,” Valls said.

‘Uncoupling’ official Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin are officially uncoupled after a judge finalised their divorce. The judgment signed by a Los Angeles judge provides few details, but states neither Paltrow nor Martin will pay spousal support. The actress and the Coldplay frontman married in December 2003 and have two children together, aged 12 and 10. Hastings vistas open up to UK tourists

Battle Abbey, the world famous site of the Battle of Hastings.

A

medieval gate house at Battle Abbey is the only place that offers panoramic views of the landscape where the Battle of Hastings was fought in 1066. And 950 years on from the clash that ended the Anglo-Saxon phase of English history, it’s being opened for the first time.

To mark the anniversary, members of the public will be able to walk up the 66 steps to the top of the abbey to take in the scene where William the Conqueror marked his victory over the English.

Visitors to the site in Battle, East Sussex, will also see the new location of the memorial stone that marks the place where England’s King Harold is said to have died.

And for the first time they can access, through the original 13th-century doorway, the large dormitory where the medieval Benedictine monks slept, until England’s monasteries were destroyed under Henry VIII in the 16th century.

There is dispute over the manner in which Harold died, whether, as all schoolchildren learn, he got an arrow in the eye, or as some historical sources say, he was hacked to death - or both.

But a new assessment has at least revealed where in the ruined church, which is said by 12th-century sources to be built on the site where Harold’s body was found among a pile of corpses, the altar that marked the

As a result, the memorial stone has been moved a short distance to the east.

Battle Abbey is hosting a temporary exhibition in the gatehouse to bring the day-long fight and its preparations to life, while

carved oak figures of archers, warriors and Norman cavalry are dotted around the grounds where battle raged 950 years ago.

Roy Porter, senior properties curator for English Heritage, said the charity had reinterpreted Battle Abbey as part of the 950th anniversary commemorations of the Battle of Hastings.

“We want people to come here to enjoy the remains of the medieval monastery but also to come away with a much better understanding of what actually happened here on October 14th, 1066.

“So we’re allowing people access for the very first time to the roof of the gatehouse, so they can look out across the landscape of the battlefield and see how it sits within the wider landscape of this part of Sussex.”

English Heritage’s commemorations have also including creating and tweeting from Twitter accounts for the major players of the fight for the English throne and an arrow hunt for 1066 arrows across its properties with prizes for the finders.

Mid Canterbury United Masters are now within a point of league leaders Western after downing Waimak Villa 3-1 at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday.

The win heaps pressure on Western, who dropped points in

a 1-1 draw against Cashmere at Garrick Memorial Park.

Mid Canterbury were 2-0 up at halftime against third placed Waimak thanks to goals from forwards Paul Bradford and Rob Breen – which were both created

by Matt Galbraith.

It was more of the same in the

second half with Galbraith and Geoff Allnut coming close, before Galbraith added Mid Canterbury’s third to put the tie beyond doubt.

Waimak netted a consolation goal late in the match but United were comfortable throughout to take what could turn out to be a

In brief Crusaders bullied On a night when no one knew what to expect, a bonus point record win for the Hurricanes was entirely in keeping with the mood. Maybe it wasn’t a surprise they won, but it was somewhat intriguing the Hurricanes were able to win as easily as they did. Christchurch used to be a graveyard for all visitors and yet the Hurricanes turned up, got belted in a few early scrums and then set about out playing the Crusaders in all areas. Of even more concern for the Crusaders will be the way they were bullied out of the second half.

Fan in the money Crusaders fans may be hurting but one Christchurch man was counting his lucky stars after winning $25,000 cash at the game. Crusaders sponsor BNZ hid a briefcase with the cash under the AMI turf prior to kickoff. Fans had to pick one of the 15,000 pieces of turf online in the past few weeks to be in to win. The Canberra-based franchise claimed the Australian conference title on Saturday with a 24-10 win over the last-placed Western Force.

The victory knocked the Waratahs out of the race and booked a quarter-final berth against reigning champions the Highlanders in the nation’s capital on Friday.

Super Rugby puzzle falls into place When Argentina’s Jaguares beat the Johannesburg-based Lions 34-22 in the final match of Super Rugby’s regular season this morning, the last piece of a complex playoffs picture – obscured until the last minute – neatly clicked into place.

The 17th and final round of a season which began five months ago saw almost unprecedented upheaval before the match in Buenos Aires, in which the Jaguares claimed the fourth win of their debut season, made clear who will play who next weekend.

The Lions’ gamble in fielding an under-strength side to save their top players for the playoffs proved a rash one as they were knocked out of first place, awarding that position against all odds to the

Wellington-based Hurricanes.

Though they failed to gain even a bonus point which would have kept them in first place, they retained home advantage in next weekend’s quarter-finals, along with compatriots the Stormers, the Hurricanes in New Zealand and the ACT Brumbies in Australia.

After starting the final round in fourth place in New Zealand and ranked seventh on the overall table the Hurricanes, beaten finalists last year, soared to first place to grab top-seeding and home advantage throughout the playoffs.

They did so with a record 3510 win over the Crusaders in Christchurch and faced the prospect of an immediate rematch with the Crusaders in the quarterfinals before the Lions loss to the

Jaguares changed the equation.

The Hurricanes will now host the Durban-based Sharks, the eighth seeds, in a home quarterfinal next Saturday.

The Lions, finishing in second place, will now face seven-time champions the Crusaders at Ellis Park in a playoff which is immeasurably tougher than the one, against the Sharks, which they surrendered when they fell out of first place.

The ACT Brumbies, who clinched first place in Australia with a 24-10 over the Force on Saturday, will meet defending champions the Highlanders and the Cape Town-based Stormers will host the Chiefs, who gave up first in New Zealand during the weekend’s turbulent round.

The Lions and Chiefs were the greatest losers of a round which contained severe changes of fortune. Both conceded privileged positions and earned immeasurably more difficult playoffs tasks than they might have been facing.

Coach Johann Ackermann has transformed the Lions this season but his tactical decision to spare his top players for the playoffs and to send a weakened team to Buenos Aires misfired.

The Lions led the Jaguares at halftime but were overwhelmed in the second spell. Still, 12 points down and with time up on the clock they continued to attack and a late try would have been enough to give them a bonus point and save first place.

That was the nature of a round

in which almost everything was in flux until the final whistle ended the regular season.

The Stormers, who had already secured the other home playoff in South Africa, finished their regular season with a 52-24 win over another of the season’s newcomers, the Port Elizabeth-based Kings.

That left them with a quarterfinal at their Newlands based next weekend against the Hamiltonbased Chiefs whose 25-15 loss to the Highlanders dropped them from first to third place in the New Zealand conference.

The Highlanders’ sixth straight win over the Chiefs moved the defending champions into second place on the conference table, shuffling the Chiefs to third and the Crusaders to fourth. - NZME

Highlanders hit top form A wild night and a conference turned upside down ended with a familiar outcome – the Highlanders rounding into title-winning form at the right time. Jamie Joseph’s men won this one in the style they use to trump so many opponents, riding a physical and incessant effort from their forward pack and enjoying moments of true brilliance from the backs. - NZME

Southern into Cup final

A bonus point loss was enough to book Southern a place in the 2016 Watters Cup final, while Celtic and Rakaia will play off for a final spot in a week’s time.

After falling to a 24-20 defeat, Michael Ellis’ side’s superior points differential was the only difference between themselves, Rakaia and Celtic at fulltime on Saturday.

Heading into the last week of round-robin rugby, Southern led the pack on 15 points while Celtic and Rakaia trailed on 11 points each.

Celtic’s bonus point win and Rakaia’s 38-16 bonus point victory over Methven saw them join Southern on 16 points. The trio could not be separated on headto-heads either, after Rakaia’s win over Celtic and loss to Southern earlier in the competition.

Southern may have narrowly scraped through to the final, but they certainly did not make it easy for themselves.

After a scoreless opening half hour, 21-year-old Celtic hooker Jacob Sutton broke the deadlock

with the afternoon’s first try, but Nathan McCloy – who played at fullback rather than his usual first five – was unable to add the extras.

Celtic then increased their lead five minutes later with an unconverted try from wing Kody Stuthridge after eventually finding a way through a stubborn Southern defence.

McCloy was off target again from his conversion but the greens headed to the sheds in a commanding position at 12-0.

Southern supporters would have been scratching their heads at the zero on the scoreboard.

Celtic had missed an early scoring opportunity and for the next 20 minutes Southern, using their outstanding rolling maul to great effect, laid seige to the Celtic line, but couldn’t quite break through the green defences.

Sensing Southern were there for the taking, Shane Enright’s side continued to pile on the pressure and were rewarded with their third try of the encounter early in the second half as lock Angus Lindsay crossed over.

But Southern were quick to re-

turn fire with an automatic place in the final up for grabs.

Wing Ollie Sapsford put the hammer down to dive over in the corner for the home side’s first points of the clash, but first five Richard Fridd failed to convert from a challenging angle.

Southern began to gather momentum and reduced the deficit to six points with an unconverted try from centre Liam O’Sullivan 25 minutes into the second half.

With a late fight back on the cards, Southern asked some testing questions of the waning Celtic defence with their lethal maul in action yet again.

Camped on Celtic’s line, a quick pick and go carried replacement flanker Patrick Davis over with nine minutes remaining.

Fridd slotted the conversion to put the home side in front for the first time at 20-18, but the lead would be short-lived.

With minutes ebbing away, Celtic wing Joe Peters had enough left in the tank to charge over and secure the win and a bonus point.

McCloy added the extras, but

it meant little in the end as Celtic took the five points and Southern earned an automatic final berth.

One interesting facet of the game at Mayfield was the effect of the new scoring system.

Both sides had several opportunities to kick for goal from penalties but both skippers chose to kick for touch or take the scrum option every time, chasing the six-point try instead of the two on offer for the penalty.

In the day’s other senior clash, Rakaia recorded a third win of their campaign over a plucky Methven side.

Tries from Luke Leosoki, Ese Fakatoka, Ritchie Williams and a double from Timoni Nabakeke saw Rakaia through at Methven Domain.

The Watters Cup holders led 30-16 at halftime with Methven first five Davey Maw and wing Sam Luscombe touching down for the home side.

Rakaia picked up the Pat McGirr Memorial Cup for their efforts, but will have to get past Celtic next week to keep their aspirations of a fourth successive Watters Cup triumph alive.

The Johannesburg-based Lions needed only a bonus point from a loss by less than seven points to clinch top spot, but after winger Anthonie Volmink’s second try gave them a 22-12 lead early in the second half they were over-run by a fired-up home side.

Fijian squad named Osea Kolinisau will captain Fiji’s rugby sevens team in Rio de Janeiro as the Pacific Islands nation targets their first Olympic gold medal. As back-to-back world champions, Fiji will start favourites in the men’s sevens competition.

The announcement was of such importance that it was made by Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama.

Fiji’s England-born coach Ben Ryan chose the squad at the end of a four-week training camp, which included fitness exercises on the sand dunes of the world heritage site at Sigatoka, near the capital Suva. Ryan said players had been “consumed by this one journey that we’re taking at the moment and sometimes you can’t remember what day it is.”

The Warriors’ horrible run in Western Australia has continued on Sturday night, with a dramatic 15-14 golden point loss to Manly in miserable conditions.

It was the 100th game to go to golden point in NRL history, and the Sea Eagles were good value for their win.

Despite being thoroughly dominated in the second half, they always looked more likely in the dying stages before Daly Cherry-Evans slotted an 85thminute drop goal.

It’s a hard loss to take, but the Warriors have only themselves to blame.

They showed tremendous courage to force their way back into the match, but weren’t good enough to make the most of a mountain of second-half possession and seemed to lose all their composure in the last five minutes of the match, epitomised

by Sam Lisone attempting a leftfooted drop goal from 30m.

Manu Vatuvei had a poor re-

turn to first grade and there will be questions over the decision to keep Tui Lolohea on the bench until the extra-time period.

Credit must go to Manly, who produced one of their best performances of the season.

They completed their first 23 sets before finally coughing up a mistake in the 54th minute.

The result continued some some significant hoodoos.

The Warriors now haven’t won in Perth in eight attempts, dating back to their first game in Western Australia in 1996.

And the Sea Eagles have been like Kryptonite for the Warriors, with 11 defeats from their last 12 encounters.

Errors dogged the Warriors.

The conditions made it tough, but there has to be some adjustment.

The visitors didn’t, with ambitious no-look passes from dummy half and not enough care when playing the ball.

And they still lacked the finesse with their fifth-tackle options, with Issac Luke guilty of overdoing the kicks from dummy half.

They worked their way back into the match, with Bunty Afoa crossing twice in the space of six minutes.

Jamie Lyon nudged the Sea Eagles in front before Luke levelled with five minutes to play.

The Warriors dominated possession for most of the second half, and forced several line dropouts, without creating too many clear-cut chances.

Solomone Kata came closest, but dropped a Thomas Leuluai grubber over the tryline.

But they were lucky to get to golden point, after Manly blew two glorious opportunities in the dying minutes.

Rowing pair golden prospect in Rio

It’s rare among top-level rowers but it happens.

Australia’s men’s four caught a crab just ahead of the finish line in a World Cup event in May, which allowed Britain to surge past them and win.

When Eric Murray and Hamish Bond jump into their boat in Rio, people won’t be asking whether they’re going to win, but by how much.

The New Zealand pair hasn’t lost a race since 2007, so anything but a third consecutive Olympic gold medal would be a major upset.

Some of their closest competitors have switched events to avoid having to compete against the blond Kiwis, something that has only strengthened their grip on the men’s pair.

Here are some of the other things to watch for in the rowing competition.

Rule Brittania?

No splashing

Water quality is a serious concern in the Rodrigo de Freitas lake, where an Associated Press investigation last year found high levels of viruses.

Though the international rowing federation called the water quality “very acceptable” at last year’s Junior World Championships, its medical commission recommends rowers to “avoid inadvertent immersion, including splashing.”

Taking no chances, the US team will be training in special suits with anti-microbial features.

Katelin Snyder, who coxes the US women’s eight, said she’d gladly skip the tradition of throwing the coxswain in the water, saying “winning would be enough of a celebration.”

The Fantastic Eight

The US women’s eight is one of most successful teams in international sports, having won every World Championship and Olympic gold medal since 2006.

The dynasty has endured even though the crews have changed.

Only two rowers, Meghan Musnicki and Eleanor Logan, remain from the eight that won gold in the London Olympics.

The biggest menace to the US winning streak is likely to come from New Zealand or Great Britain, which nearly caught up with

the Americans in a World Cup race in May in Switzerland.

Catching crabs When rowers talk about “catching a crab” they’re not thinking about trapping crustaceans from the boat.

The expression is used to describe what happens when the oar blade gets caught in the water at the wrong moment.

This causes the oar to flip, which slows down the boat and sometimes it can knock the rower into the water.

Britain topped the medal table for rowing in London 2012 with four gold, two silver and three bronze medals.

It was Britain’s biggest medal haul ever in the sport.

That’s going to be tough to match for Team GB in Rio. Helen Glover and Heather Stanning will be hard to beat in the women’s pair but 40-year-old Katherine Grainger, competing in her fifth Olympics, may find it tough to defend her gold in the women’s double sculls.

This time Grainger is partnering with Vicky Thornley.

Britain has won 63 Olympic medals in rowing, second only to the United States.

Croatian brothers

Martin and Valent Sinkovic are two-time world champions in the men’s double sculls and big favorites to win Croatia’s first Olympic gold in rowing.

They used to race in the quadruple sculls and won the silver medal in that event in London four years ago. After teaming up in the doubles in 2014 they haven’t lost a single race.

Ban a reality check Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan has issued Andrew Fifita a stern reminder in the wake of his contrary conduct ban that a repeat of such ill discipline could cost him a grand final spot.

Gallen to play on?

Shane Flanagan is confident Paul Gallen will shun retirement for one final NRL season and play for Cronulla in their 50th year in 2017. Gallen is off-contract with the Sharks at season’s end after signing a one-year deal last year.

The Cronulla skipper retired from State of Origin after NSW’s win in game three on Wednesday and is yet to commit to the Sharks beyond this year.

Hard road for Crusaders

By Patrick Mckendry After a monumental final round of Super Rugby, which veered from the sublime to the ridiculous, including from a second-string Lions team failing to gain a competition point against the Jaguares in Buenos Aires after holding a 10-point lead at one stage yesterday morning, all four New Zealand teams are entitled to feel confident about progressing to the semi-finals.

The Hurricanes will feel especially good about themselves after topping the New Zealand conference with their bonus point 35-10 thrashing of the Crusaders in Christchurch and then watching as the Highlanders did them a favour by beating the Chiefs 25-15 in Dunedin, and the Lions self-destructed in losing 34-22 in Argentina.

It means the Hurricanes host the Sharks in their quarter-final on Saturday, with the Brumbies, who looked ordinary in holding off the hapless Force 24-10 in Canberra, hosting the Highlanders.

The Hurricanes’ No1 seeding means they will host the final if they make it that far, just as they did last year when they tripped up against the Highlanders.

The Chiefs and Crusaders face the toughest challenge of the New Zealand teams – a trip to South Africa for their quarter-finals against the Stormers and Lions respectively – and the Crusaders, especially, are hard done by because they can’t leave until Tuesday.

Further blows for the Chiefs and Crusaders are the loss of some key players following their torrid matches in Dunedin and Christchurch.

Chiefs’ midfielder Seta Tamanivalu has been ruled out due to a knee injury, and Todd Blackadder will be missing key backs Andy Ellis, who strained a calf in the build-up to the Hurricanes’ defeat, and giant wing Nemani Nadolo, who strained a hamstring during it.

Midfield woes for Chiefs By kris shannon If the Chiefs’ playoff task appears much trickier than what was forecast a week ago, that challenge is only enhanced when assessing their midfield stocks.

Not only did the erstwhile leaders slump to sixth after Saturday’s loss to the Highlanders but they suffered yet another injury setback, with Seta Tamanivalu ruled out of this weekend’s quarter-final against the Stormers.

With both Charlie Ngatai and Andrew Horrell still suffering from concussion, the Chiefs have little in the way of tested midfield backs, outside of Anton LienertBrown.

In fact, their options appear to be a rookie with 36 minutes of game time, a 20-year-old fullback and a one-time World Cup hero.

Stephen Donald looms as the most experienced option, having spent 15 minutes at second five against the Highlanders after Tamanivalu limped off with a knee injury.

Donald has played only 115 minutes in his return to Super Rugby but has earned the coaches’ trust, starring in the win over Wales and starting the crunch clash against the Crusaders.

When quizzed on the alternatives to Tamanivalu, coach Dave Rennie namechecked Sam Vaka and Sam McNicol, though both youngsters have drawbacks.

Vaka has featured sparingly this season but at least has midfield experience with Counties Manukau, while McNicol has spent plenty of time on the paddock but almost exclusively as an outside back.

It’s a headache for Rennie that may persist beyond the weekend, with Tamanivalu only a chance to be fit for any potential semi-final, and one that would have further soured the coach’s mood after home advantage slipped through his side’s fingers.

Even a draw against the Highlanders would have set up a quarter-final in Hamilton but the Chiefs were bested by the defending champions for a sixth straight time, sending them on an early-morning flight to Cape Town.

There, they will encounter the unknown, given the Stormers have yet to face Kiwi opposition this season.

The players are set for a stint of video analysis on the flight to the Republic and, when they complete their scouting, the Chiefs are unlikely to be too worried about what they see.

But, having headed into the playoffs with three defeats in their last six matches, Rennie was more focused on his own side.

“I haven’t seen much of [the Stormers] at all, to be honest,” he said.

“I’ve done a bit of homework on other teams but we’ve got a bit of catching up to do.”

He hoped to freshen up his squad in preparation for a home quarter-final, and his side needed only a losing bonus point to remain top of the table and a home match against the Sharks, a team who have struggled recently in Johannesburg.

Instead, the Lions’ mix of hubris, inexperience and poor discipline finished in crushing defeat.

They will now host the Crusaders, who beat them convincingly in the round-robin, instead.

If the four New Zealand teams win their quarter-finals, the Hurricanes will host the Crusaders in one semi-final, and the Highlanders will host the Chiefs in the other – a replay of the final, dramatic, round of the regular season.

‘Mr M’ a bit crook All Blacks legend Sir Colin Meads has been hospitalised as he battles a debilitating kidney illness. And rugby’s greatest knight – who played 133 matches for the men in black between 1957 and 1971 – has revealed a flood of uninvited well-wishers has been so large, medical staff in the renal ward of Waikato Hospital have had to remove his name from the door of his room in a bid to give him some peace. “They have changed the [name tag] from Sir Colin Meads to ‘Mr M’ because people saw Colin Meads and wanted to come and say gidday,” Meads said. “So they have taken my name off the door.”

New Hall-of-Famers Belgian Justine Henin and Russian Marat Safin have been inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Seven-times grand slam singles winner Henin and twice grand slam champion Safin were joined in the festivities by France’s Amelie Mauresmo, who won election last year but was unable to attend induction ceremonies at Newport, Rhode Island due to the birth of her son. Henin, 34, is the first Belgian elected to the shrine.

As they have made a habit

of doing in recent seasons, the Magic stumbled through the early rounds of the competition, but have found momentum at the right time, dealing the Southern Steel their first loss of the year, 59-57.
