Mid Cantabrians are being advised to batten down the hatches as a weather “bomb low” is forecast to hit the central South Island today. The MetService has issued a severe weather warning for the Ashburton area, forecasting heavy rain for the Canterbury headwaters and severe northwest gales. The bomb low will leave plummeting temperatures in its wake, rapidly raise
river levels and could see a dusting of snow on the mountains. For Wairarapa, Wellington, Marlborough and Canterbury north of Ashburton, severe north-west gales gusting to 150 or 160km/hour are expected in exposed places from late this afternoon until dawn tomorrow. Winds of this strength can bring down trees and powerlines, damage unsecured structures, lift roofs and make travel hazardous, the MetService said. Communications meteorologist Lisa

Mid Canterbury high school students joined nearly 160,000 other students from around the country when they logged on to find out their NCEA Exam results yesterday At 7am yesterday the electronic floodgates opened as students around the country accessed the NZQA website to view the results of the previous year’s hard work. For Year 13 Ashburton College student Vlad Barbu, this was his third year discovering his exams results but this did not ease his nerves. The night before was a restless one. “I didn’t sleep
much because I was really nervous and worried,” he said He checked his results early in the morning while getting ready for work and hadn’t set a special alarm to be an early bird to view his results. Barbu said he was looking for the all-important 50 excellence credits that would give him level three excellence endorsed and a scholarship towards university. Studying a Bachelor of Science and double-majoring in Statistics and Finance awaits Barbu at university so merit endorsements in German, Calculus, Chemistry, Economics and an Excellence endorsement in Statistics is something he is very
proud of, and hopes will help him at university. The nationwide error that was made in the level three statistics exam was certainly something that played on Barbu’s mind in the period between the exam and the results being released. “I was scared about how they would mark it and whether it would affect if I got excellence on the paper which was something I really needed,” said Barbu Barbu will not have to endure another period waiting for scholarship exam results, unlike other Year 13 students who will be waiting until next month to discover their fate.

After completing her study at the University of Otago, Libby Neumann has returned to her hometown to spend her summer holidays immersed in the Ashburton Museum archives. The 22-year-old former Ashburton College student completed her Bachelor of Arts with Honours (BA(Hons)) in Classics last year, and prior to that, a double major in Classics and Theatre Studies. When it came time to return home and apply for jobs, she noticed an advertisement for volunteers needed at the museum. “I thought I’d come home for a holiday and reassess what I wanted to do,” she said. “I was not expecting as many opportunities, but they have been really, really good to me.” Prior to Christmas, Neumann trawled through the archives to

Police investigate Chch burglary/arson Police are investigating a burglary and arson that happened in a Christchurch bar on Monday. A man broke into several areas of the St Albans Shirley Club and took an unknown amount of money, a police spokesman said. The burglary happened be-
tween 8am and 10.30am. “Before leaving, the offender poured an accelerant on the floor of the lounge area and set it on fire,” the spokesman said. “Only minor damage was caused because luckily a member of the public noticed the
blaze and a builder on site used a hose to extinguish the fire.” The man was last seen running from the building heading north towards the entrance on Hills Road. Police would like help to identify him. - NZME

Art wall nears completion By Megan gnad
for an artist talk. Ideas began to flow and he put together a proposal to gallery staff, starting the project on January 7. “Artists don’t get holidays, it’s 24/7,” he said. “When I saw the wall, I wanted to put a proposal through for it, because it’s a unique scale and dimension, and because it’s slightly freestanding, it makes it seem like a canvas.” Braunias’ work is held in public, corporate and private collections in New Zealand and overseas, and is represented by Jonathan Smart Gallery in Christchurch, Peter McLeavey Gallery in Wellington and Bath Street Gallery in Auckland. In 2010 Braunias was awarded a Fulbright/Wallace scholarship to take up a Residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts in San Francisco.

The wall of art adorning the Ashburton Art Gallery foyer is now complete. Kawhia-based contemporary artist, Mark Braunias has been working away on the 6m x 4m project over the past 10 days. On Monday, he added the final touches to the work he titled Assemble, Disassemble, Reassemble. Like the majority of his wall installations, the art will remain on display for six months, at which time it will be painted over. “It’s kind of like a biological fantasy map with comic book influence,” says Braunias. “Like crossing Charles Darwin with Walt Disney.” He was first attracted to the light, bright space at the art gallery when he visited in 2015

Learning theatre skills at summer school Seven-year-old Arnica Copland and eight-year-old Isabel Wang are among about 60 students at the summer school this week. The children and young teenagers are learning how to integrate dialogue, song and character in the field of musical theatre this week. They are attending Big Little Theatre Company’s annual one-week summer school, at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. Aged from six to 15, the youngsters are looking forward to showing what they have learned when they put on a performance on Friday night. They are fine-tuning their abilities under the direction of tutors Bryan Aitken of the Court Theatre, and Christchurch drama teacher Laurence Wiseman.

It is a mystery what caused the death of a Hector’s dolphin which was observed washed up on Dorie Beach over the weekend. A group of people who visited on Sunday reported seeing a pod of four or five similar dolphins swimming nearby. responded to reports of the dead dolphin from several members of the public, and visited on Monday. However, by the time they arrived it had washed out to sea on the high tide, so they were unable to suggest how the creature died. Spokesperson Fiona Oliphant said it was DOC standard procedure to remove or bury dead dolphins in areas of high public use.“Also DoC was interested to know why the animal had died,” she said. “Information on Hector’s dolphin
deaths is routinely collected to add to our understanding about this species.” Without further information on the pod of dolphins swimming nearby, it was not possible to identify what type they were. Hector’s are only found in New Zealand waters and are the smallest and rarest marine dolphins in the world. They have a distinctive round dorsal fin, and include the Maui subspecies. Nine different species of dolphin altogether reside in New Zealand waters.

School students join camp’s war on weeds Armed with saws and secateurs, Mt Somers Springburn School students were out in force at Staveley Camp for a pre-Christmas weeding bee. The students were the first to take part in a new weedbusting programme devised by Staveley Camp to help look after the 10 hectare forest remnant which surrounds the camp. This remnant is the last easternmost patch of mountain beech left in the Ashburton District, and a rare reminder of what forests in the area once looked like. Year 6 and 7 students spent two days tackling weeds in the forest remnant before school broke up for the year, under the watchful eye of camp committee member, Barry Marett. “So many kids from Canterbury haven’t even seen bush before,” Marett said. “We wanted to devise a programme of activities that would get students into the bush, engaged with nature, and learning about threats to our biodiversity.” Weeds are one of those threats, and this was the first weeding bee targeting seedling sycamore trees which are spreading throughout the bush remnant. Funding for tools, herbicide gels and gloves came from a $2000 grant from the QEII Community

achieve and wanted to support their initiative,” Shanks said. “This funding is not just about weed control, it’s an investment in a community initiative that
will engage our next generation of caretakers and show them how to help look after these special places.” Local Subway staff also chipped
in with a free lunch for students to reward their efforts. Weedbusters national co-ordinator Carolyn Lewis says the Staveley Camp project fitted perfectly with the criteria for funding support from the project. “Future weeding bees are in the pipeline, and include clearing young sycamore seedlings for up to five years to deplete the seed bank.” Ash, rowan, grey willow, cotoneaster, spindleberry, Darwin’s barberry, and ivy are other weeds that will need to be tackled in future to give seedlings from trees such as wineberry/makomako, putaputaweta, broadleaf/kapuka, kotukutuku/fuchsia and horeka/ lancewood the chance to renew the forest. The Staveley Camp committee will be approaching other Mid Canterbury schools inviting them to join the programme. The full house signs have been up on several occasions this summer at Mt Somers’ Woolshed Creek hut. Upwards of 20 trampers have packed into the hut most nights and often there have been others pitching tents in the area, said Department of Conservation supervisor of recreation and historic assets Chris Dyson. However, while peak numbers of trampers have been causing headaches on many of the country’s tramping tracks, the
numbers using the Mt Somers Walkway are still well within manageable levels, he said. There are claims that tourist numbers on some of New Zealand’s most popular tracks have reached tipping point with trampers saying the big numbers are ruining the unique back country experience. Figures show that many people are now avoiding DOC’s nine great walks and are choosing secondary tracks, pumping up user numbers well above optimum levels. While numbers on the Mt Som-
The Woolshed Creek Hut. ers Track are high, they are still well within acceptable levels, Dyson said. At times there have been about 50 people in and camped around the Woolshed Creek Hut, but wa-

ter and toilet facilities were able to accommodate those numbers. Pinnacles Hut, sited towards the Staveley end of the track has also been at capacity many nights.
Woolshed Creek Hut has 26 bunk beds while Pinnacles Hut has 19. “People know it gets busy in there so they take tents. It’s very easy access and that makes it very popular.” The track is expected to be busy until late April, he said. “They’re brilliant huts and the track is great for first time trampers and families; we’ve had a lot of families in there this summer and that’s great to see.” A hut warden is employed to care for both Woolshed Creek and Pinnacles huts.

Christmas elderly wishes 2016
T
he Christmas spirit is definitely alive in the Ashburton District. When the Guardian put out a call for people to lend a helping hand to the elderly this festive season, the community responded in large numbers Dozens of people asked for help and dozens of people were keen to give some of their time to make the festive season a little easier for a stranger. While it is impossible to thank every person individually, our reporters have been out and about taking photos as some of those requests for help were granted. Guardian reporter Jaime Pitt-MacKay talked to the people who were helped and those who did the helping.

Making this wish come true For Wendy Marr 2016 had been a tough year and circumstances had meant some tasks around the home hadn’t been completed. Suffering a loss in her family, times had been tough and tasks such as washing the windows and spraying the driveway were tasks that fell by the wayside. This meant that receiving a phone call out of the blue that she would be receiving some help with these tasks after being referred to the Guardian was fantastic.
Lending some of his time to help out was Steve Stratford. He helped with a variety of tasks such as window washing and trellis painting so this was perfect for him. The windows were washed inside and out and weeds sprayed off the driveway. Wendy said she was very grateful for the work that Steve did and to show her appreciation dropped round some shortbread as a thank you.
Granting wishes becomes a family affair residents at the villas could receive just a little Christmas gift as their wish. Pauline was more than happy to oblige, whipping up some shortbread for the residents. Giving doesn’t appear to fall far from the tree, with Pauline’s son, Simon, granting Margaret Halkett’s wish for a bit of help restringing

Judge lectures pregnant girl Nail throwing deplored
A teen mum-to-be has received a stern lecture from a judge after she was caught drink-driving midway through her pregnancy. Jahmayla Santana Stewart, 18, appeared before the Dunedin District Court after she was pulled over by police on January 13. The breath-alcohol driving limit for anyone under 20 is zero -
Stewart blew a reading of 250. Her lawyer Chris Lynch said the unemployed teen was pressured into driving because she was the least intoxicated of her group of friends. When she told the court Stewart was due to give birth in May, Judge Kevin Phillips immediately reacted.
“She’s out boozing and she’s pregnant?” he said. “Do you know the impact it could have on the foetus you’re carrying? You’re prepared to take the risk. Well, you’ve got to take the penalty,” the judge said. He fined the teenager $250 and disqualified her from driving for three months. -NZME
Marlborough Police are calling for a “stupid” nail thrower to stop before someone gets seriously injured. Someone has twice thrown nails onto State Highway 1 north of Blenheim this summer. Sergeant Barrie Greenall says at least 20 tyres were punctured on

Gang tension rocks Whakatane Multiple arrests have been made after shots were fired at a Mongrel Mob funeral procession in Whakatane. The body of Mongrel Mob member Tahu Kingi was being transported in a motorcade of about 100 vehicles carrying other Kawerau-based members of the gang from the town to the Whakatane Crematorium yesterday afternoon. Whakatane’s resident gang, Black Power, was allegedly trying to prevent the Mongrel Mob from entering. The drama follows a road-rage incident on Friday when Kingi’s coffin ended up on the road. “We’re gonna save the town from them,” one of the Black Power members said at the Landing Road Bridge entrance to the town, where they and Crips members had congregated to block the road. They then abandoned their position and moved to the bottom of the Gorge Rd roundabout, the main route to the crematorium. The confrontation was apparently sparked by an altercation outside a funeral home in Whakatane on Friday, where Kingi’s body was before it was taken back to Kawerau for the tangi. Mongrel Mob members allegedly attacked and ran over a Black Power member who passed by. A man, who did not want his identity revealed, said yesterday afternoon senior Black Power members had told him the younger gang member’s patch was stolen in the incident. Also at the time, the coffin containing Kingi is said to have fallen on to the road during a collision with another vehicle. While Friday’s confrontation was not widely observed, yesterday’s spectacle has been very real to the public of Whakatane. The motorcade was being escorted by 15 police officers, as well as Armed Offenders Squad members from Tauranga and Rotorua. At about 4.15pm shots were fired near the corner of Valley and Arawa roads, police said. Police have arrested several people and said inquiries are continuing. Residents reported hearing multiple gunshots and a number of vehicles have been damaged. Local shops closed their doors and people peeped out to the street watching what was happening. A local woman said she saw youth crying out of fear.
“Black Power are extremely agitated. “Our gangs haven’t played up for a long time. “All of Whakatane knows what’s going on. It’s mad.” She said gang members were starting to flood in to Whakatane from all over the country. Police were preventing people other than mourners from entering the Hillcrest Crematorium. Whakatane Beacon reporter Karla Akuhata said it was “incredibly tense” when the procession passed through the town. Black Power members were “mouthing off” at their opponents and Mob members responded. “On a few occasions Mongrel Mob members tried to get out of their cars to engage but police were quick to step in and prevent them,” she said. Police said it looks like the gangs are now leaving the cemetery. Police will continue to monitor the “fluid situation” and are hoping the procession back to Kawerau goes smoothly. There were about 10 armed offender squad members and more than 20 police officers at the roundabout. Other police officers were stationed in other strategic locations. Traffic was stopped to give priority to the funeral cortège. Police drafted out cars containing members of the public not associated with the funeral further up the road to speed up the cortège’s progress through the roundabout at the bottom of Gorge Rd where the main confrontation took place. There were “hundreds of spectators” at the roundabout to watch the action, Akuhata said. A police spokesman said police had received an assault complaint after Friday’s incident on State Highway 1. “The victim, a Waikato man, called police from his home to report that he had been attacked by the driver of a car following a traffic altercation.” The man told police he had been dragged from the car and “punched several times” by a patched Mongrel Mob member. Fairfax Media reported the victim’s wife said her husband was spat at, dragged from the car and punched in the face several times. “It was done in front of my son. He’s 10. He was dragged from the car while my son was yelling for him to stop,” she said. – NZME

Kiwi trapped in Mexico shooting A Kiwi trapped in a nightclub shooting was forced to dive for cover as a gunman opened fire on revellers and security staff at a nightclub in Mexico. Paraparaumu man Tyler Klee has described chaotic scenes as people fled for their lives at a packed music festival in Playa Del Carmen. At least five people were killed and 15 injured in the rampage believed to be over a drug-related matter. Klee told New Zealand Herald Focus he was just 20m away when the shooting started. “Everyone thought it was just fireworks going off and then everyone started to panic and go into a mad rush. “It was chaos. There was a lots of gunshots around and we didn’t know exactly where they were coming from but we knew we had to get home.” He said people began fleeing the nightclub to escape the carnage.
“Everyone was just pouring out. We heard more gunshots and we ran into a nearby restaurant. Everyone was terrified.” He said when the gunfire died down he made a break for it and ran for his life. “Inside it was carnage. One was was crushed to death and people were climbing over each other and everyone was horrified,” he said. People were in tears on the streets outside and nobody knew what was going on. He understood the attack started at the door when the gunman was confronted by security guards at the club’s entrance. Meanwhile, his mother Susan Klee was stunned to learn her 28-year-old son Tyler was near the packed club when the night out ended in a bloodbath. She said her shaken son phoned to reassure his family he had survived and was unharmed but incredibly rattled by the shooting, which killed five people.
Tyler, who was in Mexico on a summer break travelling South America, was trapped outside the front of the venue with his friends and had nowhere to go. “He heard the gunshots and thought at first it was fireworks. “They were right at the front and couldn’t get out. “They ducked down against the wall once they realised what was happening.” She said her son described scenes of pandemonium inside the club. One woman was trampled to death. He was now recovering back at his hostel. He had spent a sleepless night knowing he and his friends had had a close shave with death. Tyler told reporters he immediately ran away from the nightclub. “I was thinking it was the same thing that happened in Paris, some guy just walking in and shooting people at a restaurant, bang bang bang, a terrorist attack,” said Klee. – NZME
Police apologise to man left in court cells Police have apologised to a man after he was locked in court cells from Saturday until Monday when he was discovered by police and court staff. The man had appeared in Masterton District Court on Saturday morning. He had breached a bail charge and was granted bail by the sitting Justice of the Peace. He was discovered in the cells by police and court staff on Monday morning. Police have begun an internal investigation. “The priority is to determine how this happened and to continue to support the man and his family,” Wairarapa Area
Commander Inspector Donna Howard said. “Police have apologised to the man and his family for the distress caused. We are working with the Ministry of Justice and police have also referred the matter to the Independent Police Conduct Authority.” A Ministry of Justice spokesman said the man was in the custody of police. But, as the owner of the building, the ministry would work with police to investigate the circumstances. The man was seen by a doctor and then returned home to his family after being released from the cells. – NZME

Exhausted doctors mean Third World care Sue Newman

ometimes when no matter how much you complain you’re ignored, you just have to take drastic action. And that’s exactly what New Zealand’s junior doctors have done. For the second time in just a few months, they’ve downed tools and gone on strike, unprecedented action for people whose working world is based on saving lives. But what option did they have? Who would train for years, amass mountains of debt to work the horrendous hours they’re forced to work? Yes, somewhere down the track they’ll earn seriously decent money – if they survive the intervening years, but that doesn’t make what has almost become the way junior doctors are treated, right. Perhaps its hierarchical; their seniors did it and can’t see a reason why the next generation shouldn’t too, but it’s wrong. It’s unsafe for the doctors and it’s unsafe for patients. We’re not a Third World country, we expect the best of medical care, but if people are working long, long hours then the best of care is not what we’ll be getting. Instead we’re getting burned out doctors and at-risk patients. What New Zealand expects its young doctors to do is inhumane. In no other field would workers be encouraged or allowed to work those hours. Drivers have log books but with junior doctors it seems the rules around managing shift work, breaks and workplace fatigue have gone out the window. No one in their right mind would put their hand up to work rotations that include an 11-day stint with seven consecutive night shifts and a 12-day stretch with two 15-hour weekend shifts. Add high patient loading, particularly at night, and no wonder medical misadventure occurs. The union is wanting a maximum of four consecutive nights and 10 days work in a row. Not unreasonable. Unlike most strikes, this is not about money and that makes it so much more worthy of public support. Young doctors want to have a life outside work themselves and they want to ensure they’re in the right physical and mental shape to look after patients’ lives too. None of that’s unreasonable. This strike may have inconvenienced hundreds of people whose surgery has been rescheduled, but ultimately we’re doing ourselves and our health system a favour by supporting our junior doctors.

Let’s celebrate New Zealand’s healthy food By Mark ross
W
hat was the last thing you ate? Do you know where it came from or the journey it took to get to your plate? When consuming a meal, or creating one, we often think of how the flavours and textures work together, or how our family and friends will enjoy the experience of a meal lovingly created, or dutifully thrown together last minute at the end of a busy day. We might consider the cut of meat, breed of animal, how it was fed or how much it cost. Many indulge in watching the sweat and tears of contestants beating the clock to produce a plate that would make Al Brown salivate. But we don’t often consider the farmers and plant scientists who work diligently each day to maintain our food supply and make nutritious food available. Even before the first seed is sown, or animal is conceived, a plethora of science-based innovation and safeguards are in place to ensure that what ends up on the dinner plate is safe and good to eat. Some people imagine that food is simple to grow, not considering the multitude of factors that got it through the supply chain and on to the plate. The threats that crops and animals face – from pests to diseases to harsh weather – can ruin a crop harvest or threaten the health of livestock. Farmers may be more fixated on meteorological forecasts, the prospect of a drought or water quality, rather than the veterinary medicines and agrichemicals – such as antimicrobials and herbicides – needed to ensure an abundant and reliable product to sell. But these tools are critical to farm production, to effectively manage pests and diseases, and grow our primary sector. In developing a new product, thousands of newly synthesised chemicals need to be analysed, one by one, for their effects on plants, animals and pests. Those with promising properties are subjected to further, more detailed research and testing, until only a few remain. In fact every crop protection product that reaches the market costs $US286 million and takes 11 years of research and develop-
We don’t often consider the farmers and plant scientists who work diligently each day to make nutritious food available. ment to ensure the highest safety and efficacy standards – according to a study by Phillips McDougal, commissioned by Crop Life International earlier in 2016. The crop protection industry spent a total of $US2.6 billion on new innovations in 2014, according to this study. The cost of bringing a new product to market has increased by 55 per cent since the turn of the century, the study reports. Much of the increase can be attributed to a rise in the volume and complexity of environmental safety and toxicology data required by regulatory bodies to ensure products are safe. The time commitment to bring a product to market from eight years in 1995, to more than 11 years now, reflects the rigorous
research and development phase, as well as delays in regulatory decisions. In New Zealand and overseas, the crop protection and animal medicine industries continue to invest heavily in cutting-edge innovations to help farmers around the world protect their crops and livestock from pests. Given the growing cost, the report demonstrates why we need predictable and risk-based regulations alongside robust intellectual property rights to give companies the confidence to continue to invest. must get the approval of our two regulators, the Ministry for Primary Industries and the Environmental Protection Authority, prior to it being available to the farmer. This ensures that the product is safe for people, the environment and has a high level of efficacy. Club shooter captured A gunman suspected of killing 39 people during a New Year’s attack on an Istanbul nightclub has been caught in a police operation, Turkish media reports. The suspect was captured in a special operations police raid on a house in Istanbul’s Esenyurt district, private NTV television reported. The broadcaster said he had been staying in the house belonging to a friend from Kyrgyzstan. The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the nightclub massacre, saying the attack in the first hours of January 1 was in reprisal for Turkish military operations in northern Syria. The man identified as the suspect had been on the run since the attack. Hurriyet newspaper and other media have identified the gunman as Abdulkadir Masharipov, an Uzbekistan national. The suspect was to undergo medical checks before being taken to police headquarters for questioning, the paper said in its online

His 4-year-old child, who was with him at the home, was taken into protective custody. Police established his whereabouts four or five days ago, but delayed the raid so they could monitor his movements and contacts, NTV reported. The television channel also broadcast footage showing plain-clothed police taking away a man in a white top and sweat pants, forcing his head down. The station said the images showed the gunman’s Kyrgyz friend being taken to a police vehicle. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu posted a Twitter message thanking the interior minister, Suleyman Soylu, police and intelligence organisations “who caught the Reina attacker in the name of the people”. - AP

Shooter kills 5, panics music festival-goers Gunfire broke out in a crowded beachfront nightclub throbbing with electronic music before dawn yesterday, causing five deaths and setting off a bloody stampede by screaming concert-goers at an
international festival in the Caribbean resort. At least one person died in the crush to escape and some of the 15 people wounded or injured were hurt in the rush out, authorities said.
Quintana Roo state Attorney General Miguel Angel Pech ruled out any terror attack, and the state’s governor said it involved a personal dispute. Pech said the shooting erupted when security per-

A Turkish cargo plane crashed yesterday in a residential area just outside the main airport in Kyrgyzstan, destroying half of a village and killing at least 37 people in the plane and on the ground, the Emergency Situations Ministry said. The Boeing 747 crashed at 7.40am while approaching Manas airport, south of the capital, Bishkek, in this Central Asian nation. Footage from the scene showed the plane’s nose stuck inside a brick house and large chunks of debris scattered around. A dozen body bags were laid out in the yard of one home. A car parked nearby was mangled in the crash, and a refrigerator lay open. The bodies of 15 victims, including five children, all of them Kyrgyz citizens, had been identified, the Kyrgyz government said on its website. Another 15 people, including six children, were hospitalised in the disaster, according to the health ministry. In a surprise appearance during the cricket over the weekend, 90s icon Thingee crashed the stage in order to take viewers on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Sky studios. Introducing viewers to various members of the team, Thingee didn’t hold back while giving his unique take on the production. “James is the director, he talks all the time and sometimes people listen to him.” Apparently serving as the new public relations officer for the satellite network, Thingee visited various departments that work to put the cricket together on, lavishing each person with praise.

Appearing as a contestant on the dancing show, Hughie Maughan’s heavily bronzed face caused fans to do a double take of their television screens. “Heavily bronzed” doesn’t even begin to describe how severe this fake tan was. It’s as if Maughan applied several coats and then didn’t follow the instructions to wash off the excess tan after four hours as recommended. His darker hue became even more accentuated when he stood next to his fellow contestants. And no. This is not just his everyday look.

Firms upbeat on building boom, rural recovery
Samsung Electronics vice-chairman Lee Jae-yong. abilities were unproven. funds to various entities controlled by Choi Soon-sil, the jailed secretive confidante of the president, including two non-profit foundations and a winter sports centre run by Choi’s niece. Other charges alleged by prosecutors include embezzlement and lying under oath during a parliamentary hearing into the influence peddling scandal last month. A Seoul court will review the prosecutors’ request today, and a decision on whether to approve the arrest warrant could take two to three days, the Associated Press reported. News that prosecutors were pursuing Lee, who symbolises the future of Korea’s most important chaebol, shocked the conservative Asian country. Such leaders tend to be treated as vital for the national economy. - AP

He’s the billionaire “prince” and de facto heir of one of the world’s largest companies - and very soon he could facing the possibility of a jail term. Lee Jae-yong, the 48-year-old vice-chairman of Samsung Electronics, is facing an arrest warrant from Korean prosecutors investigating a massive corruption scandal which has already claimed the country’s president. Lee, Korea’s third-richest person with a net worth of more than $10 billion, has been the de facto leader of Samsung since his father, Lee Kun-hee – Korea’s richest person – suffered a crippling heart attack in 2014. Samsung was founded by Lee’s grandfather, Lee Byung-chul, in 1938, and today its revenue is equal to nearly one fifth of Korea’s GDP. Often referred to by local media as the “Crown Prince of Samsung”, Lee’s succession as the head of the country’s most important “chaebol”, or family-controlled conglomerate, has been thrown into disarray. Ironically, Lee faces allegations of offering a $48 million bribe to an associate of now impeached President Park Geun-hye in exchange for government support during a complicated reorganisation of the company intended to solidify his control. Before becoming vice-chairman in 2014, the famously private Lee had served in various roles since joining the company fulltime in 1991. During his rise through the company, the younger Lee never even gave a formal interview on the record, out of deference for his father. Following the elder Lee’s heart attack, many analysts worried that his son’s management
compared to 16.8 per cent in September. Investment intentions improved, with a net 11 per cent intending to invest in buildings compared to 9 per cent, while a net 16 per cent intend to invest in plant and machinery compared to 17 per cent. The November earthquake in Kaikoura, which disrupted businesses in the upper South Island and lower North Island, didn’t have a noticeable impact on business confidence, which remained high in the capital city of Wellington. New Zealand businesses stayed relatively upbeat about the state of the economy in the final three months of 2016, as the nation’s building boom continued to soak up resources and the recovery in global dairy prices lifted optimism in rural areas. A seasonally adjusted net 26 per cent of firms surveyed in the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research’s quarterly survey of business opinion expect general business conditions to improve in the coming 12 months, down from 28 per cent in the September period. A net 21 per cent experienced stronger trading in the final three months of 2016 and 25 per cent see more expansion in the coming quarter, down from 26 per cent and 32 per cent respectively. Business confidence remained strongest in the building sector, with the house building pro-
gramme in Auckland and Canterbury’s reconstruction continuing to underpin activity. While the survey of 906 firms doesn’t specifically cover agriculture, firms in rural areas perked up with the dairy price recovery through the second half of last year, with a net 32 per cent of South Island firms and a net 30 per cent of lower North Island companies upbeat about the economic outlook, compared with 25 per cent and 19 per cent respectively in September. “Business confidence remains highest in the building sector, reflecting very strong construction demand,” NZIER principal economist Christina Leung said in her report. “Confidence in rural regions is bouncing back as global dairy prices continue to recover.” ASB Bank economists expect New Zealand’s economy will grow 3.5 per cent this year on the strength of the building sector and tourism boom, which were key

Add a burst of sunshine to your meals
I
f you’re fortunate enough to have an apricot tree in your backyard you’ll be reaping the benefits of fresh, fragrant fruit that can be turned into jams, sauces, chutneys or a host of sweet or savoury dishes. Like most stone fruits, apricots are incredibly versatile and add a burst of sunshine to whatever meal they’re part of.
Apricot relish for steak 500g fresh apricots, pitted, quartered 3/4 C red onion, chopped 2T rice vinegar 2T sugar 1/2 t five-spice powder ■ Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan. ■ Bring to boil, then reduce heat and simmer for five minutes, stirring constantly. ■ Serve with steak.
Apricot chicken kebabs 4 chicken breast halves, boned and skinned 16 fresh small/medium firm apricots, cut into halves (32 halves) 1 large red or green pepper 1/2 medium red onion 1/4 t salt
■ Repeat; finish with 1 pepper and 1 onion. ■ Grill for 8 minutes or until chicken is cooked through, turning every 2 to 3 minutes.
Apricot cake
Marinade: 1C white wine 1/4 C lemon juice 3T olive oil 2T white wine vinegar 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 1/2 t thyme leaves 1 1/2 t rosemary leaves 1/2 t grated lemon peel ■ Combine marinade ingredients. ■ Cut each chicken breast, lengthwise, into 4 strips. ■ Place the chicken into a medium bowl with approximately 3/4 of the marinade. ■ Place the apricots into a medium bowl with remainder. ■ Cover and refrigerate for 24 hours, turning occasionally. ■ Drain chicken and apricots; discard marinade. ■ Sprinkle salt on chicken. ■ Cut pepper and onion into 1-inch squares. ■ Thread each skewer pepper, onion, chicken strip, loosely wrapped “s” fashion around 2 apricot halves.
200g butter, softened 1C white sugar 3 eggs 150g apricot yoghurt 3C finely chopped unpeeled fresh apricots Grated rind and juice of 1 lemon 2C flour 3t baking powder 1t ground cinnamon ■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Spray a 20cm round cake tin with with non-stick baking spray and line the base with non-stick baking paper. ■ Mix the butter and sugar in a food processor or large bowl until creamy. ■ Add the eggs and mix well. ■ Mix in the yoghurt, fruit, lemon rind and juice, flour, baking powder and cinnamon. ■ Don’t over mix – just stir until loosely combined. ■ Pour into the prepared tin and bake for 55-60 minutes. ■ Cool on a wire rack.

Spicy apricot sauce 3T sugar, plus more to taste 250g apricots, pitted and cut into chunks 1 chilli, finely chopped 1T fresh lemon juice ■ In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, bring sugar, 1/2 C water and the apricots to a simmer. ■ Cover and cook until apricots are completely tender, about 4 minutes. ■ Transfer apricot mixture, chilli and lemon juice to a food processor. ■ Pulse until sauce is blended but still slightly chunky. ■ Taste and add more sugar if you like. ■ Transfer to a serving bowl. Serve warm or chilled. ■ Will keep up to one week in fridge.
Pork and apricots 4 pork fillets 1 pinch sea salt and freshly cracked pepper, to taste
1T olive oil 2T honey 4 fresh apricots, pitted and cut into wedges 3 cloves garlic, minced, or to taste 1t fresh parsley, chopped ■ Pat the pork chops dry with paper towels then sprinkle both sides with salt and black pepper. ■ Heat olive oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat. ■ Brown the pork well on both sides, about 5 minutes per side. ■ Stir in honey, apricots and garlic. ■ Cover then simmer until the pork is tender and juices run clear, about 8 minutes. ■ Sprinkle with parsley then serve chops topped with the apricots and sauce.

1t cinnamon 1 finely chopped chilli Black pepper ■ Place the chopped apricots in a large bowl. ■ Stir in the sugar and the vinegar. ■ In a large sauté pan, heat 1 tablespoon of the butter and 1 tablespoon of olive oil over mediumhigh heat. ■ Brown chicken on each side and sprinkle with salt. Remove chicken. ■ Add the remaining oil to the pan and sauté the onion until it begins to brown. ■ Add the chicken stock and lower the heat to medium. ■ Put about 2/3 of the apricots, along with any juice they have given up, into a blender and blend into a purée. Pour the purée into the pan with the chicken stock and onions. ■ Add the cinnamon, rosemary and chilli and a little more salt to taste. ■ Bring to a simmer, then lower the heat and gently simmer for 1020 minutes. ■ Put chicken and remaining apricots back into pan. Simmer 10 mins. ■ Serve hot with rice.

Add the shallots, garlic, shrimp paste and chillies to the pan and cook for 2–3 minutes until the mixture is fragrant. Add the rice, prawns and cabbage and mix all ingredients gently together. Cook until it has heated through and the cabbage has softened. Add the strips of omelette, bean sprouts, kecap manis and soy sauce. To serve, garnish with fried shallots and chopped peanuts.

Sharon Sims and Peter Belliss, who took over from long-time selector Dave Edwards after the recent Bowls World Championships, have named a 15-strong national squad that will remain intact through to the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. All of the squad members that represented New Zealand at the World Championships remain in the team but are joined by five additional players. France will host the All Blacks for the second straight year after announcing their home tests schedule for the end of the year. France will open the end of year tests against the All Blacks on November 11, a rematch of New Zealand’s 24-19 in Paris late last season. It will be the third straight year the All Blacks and France have clashed including their quarter-final meeting at the 2015 World Cup. The All Blacks haven’t lost in France since 2000. The All Blacks will face Scotland on November 18 followed by a clash with Wales in Cardiff on November 25. After facing the All Blacks, France will then play South Africa the following weekend before hosting Japan for the first time in 44 years on November 25. The French rugby federation says it will be Japan’s first test in France since a 30-18 loss to the Tricolors in 1973 in the southwestern city of Bordeaux. Bangladesh captain released from hospital Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim was released from hospital after being admitted for precautionary tests when he was for struck on the head by a bouncer on the final day of the first cricket test against New Zealand on Monday. A team spokesman said he was suffering mild concussion. Mushfiqur was taken to hospital shortly before lunch after he was struck on the back of the
helmet as he tried to duck under a low bouncer from New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee. He knelt, then collapsed to the ground near the pitch and lay motionless for almost 20 minutes as he received treatment from paramedics and team medical staff. There were fears Mushfiqur had suffered a more serious injury but after arriving at Wellington Hospital, only about 100 metres
from the Basin Reserve where the match was being played, he was able to get word to his teammates that he was feeling better. He asked that his family in Bangladesh be informed that he was well. Mushfiqur was able to rejoin his team after precautionary tests and in time for the end of the match, which New Zealand won by chasing down its winning target of 217 runs, thanks to an un-
beaten century by captain Kane Williamson. “I’m feeling much better. Things could have been worse,” Mushfiqur said. “Luckily I escaped. Basking in the glory of basin beauty H as there been a better advertisement for test cricket than what transpired at Wellington’s Basin Reserve over the past week? The purest form of cricket doesn’t often get much positive comment. In fact it’s very rare to find a glowing endorsement of a match that can last five days and still be determined a draw come the end of it. But New Zealand’s incredible victory against Bangladesh gave hope to the format. Because it had a little bit of everything. Right from run-scoring feasts through to an ambulance being parked in the middle of the wicket to cart a player off to hospital. As the hotbed of excitement that is short-formed cricket, and in particular T20, continues to prosper, the Wellington test is just what the doctor ordered and the amount of people who filed into the Basin Reserve on the

final day to watch New Zealand snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, albeit on a free-ride after the gates were opened up to the public, was simply perfect. Who would have thought after a rain-ravaged first day and a first innings total of 595 by Bangladesh that this match was going for anything other than a tedious draw, or by some small miracle – a victory to Bangladesh. total was the most runs scored in the first innings by a losing side. That’s in the history of test cricket. Not just in New Zealand. Shakib Al Hasan’s 217 was the highest individual score for Bangladesh and his partnership of 359 with Mushfiqur Rahim was the highest fifth wicket partnership for the visiting country – and was also the highest fifth wicket ever in New Zealand. The total number of runs scored for the match, 1511, is a test record at the Basin Reserve and Tom Latham’s 177 is the second highest score by an opener on that ground too. New Zealand’s second innings chase of 217 was the first time since 2008 that they have chased down more than 200 runs to win a test match – their previous being also against Bangladesh when they chased 317 to win in Chittagong. Captain courageous, Kane Williamson, scored the fastest
of his 15 test match centuries in the match and his partnership with Ross Taylor of 163 was the fastest fourth innings partnership in test cricket with their run splurge coming in 25.2 overs. So, there was plenty to get excited about and plenty to keep one on the edge one’s seat. And now we head to Christchurch. To a ground that is renowned for runs so the promise is for more of the same. But let’s hope there is a little more there for the bowlers too. Because while watching Williamson craft one of his majestic innings is a pleasure to watch, there’s also something special about watching a fast-bowler tear apart a top order. And that can be done without the use of a barrage of short bowling. But that might be a discussion for another day as we let test cricket bask in the glory of the basin beauty.
Valtteri Bottas has replaced retired Formula One world champion Nico Rosberg at Mercedes, with Brazilian veteran Felipe Massa coming out of retirement to take the Finn’s seat at Williams. Appearing at the factory with team boss Toto Wolff, Bottas promised to push new team-mate and triple world champion Lewis Hamilton as hard as possible. “I’m sure we are going to be close and both pushing each other forward,” said the 27-year-old, who has yet to win a Grand Prix in four years at Williams, but has appeared on the podium nine times. Wolff, who helped guide the Finn’s early career and also has close ties with Mercedes-powered Williams as a former shareholder, said Bottas would fit in well. “He’s very fast as a driver and he shows our values,” added the Austrian, who has had an unexpectedly busy winter, following Rosberg’s shock decision to quit 45 days ago, less than a week after winning his first championship. “He’s modest, humble and hard-working.” Williams had earlier announced that Massa, who left at the end of last season at the age of 35, had agreed a one-year contract to end the shortest of retirements. Mercedes have been dominant for the past three years, winning both the drivers and constructors titles, and will start as favourites again, despite major aerodynamic rule changes. While Hamilton (32) can expect to be the team’s main man, with many tipping the Briton to romp to a fourth title, after winning 10 races in a rollercoaster 2016, Bottas can be a genuine contender. “Now it’s time for the next level, to see how he can step up to challenge for race wins and for championships,” Wolff said. “We know that we are already behind the curve in terms of preparations for the new season, so we’ve got a busy programme to get him integrated into the team. One thing is for sure - as I know Valtteri, he will give it everything.” Massa, a former race winner with Ferrari and 2008 world championship runner-up, will partner 18-year-old Canadian rookie Lance Stroll at Williams. “I always intended to race somewhere in 2017, but Williams is a team close to my heart and I have respect for everything it is trying to achieve,” said the Brazilian, who made a tearful farewell to his home crowd last November. “I certainly have not lost any of my enthusiasm for racing and I’m extremely motivated to be coming back to drive the FW40.” Sauber earlier set the day’s merry-go-round in motion, by announcing that German driver Pascal Wehrlein, who was the Mercedes reserve and Bottas’s main rival to replace Rosberg, would race for them this year. - AP

Gerard O’Reilly held the bragging rights over his daughter Sarah over the dinner table last night after they produced a father/daughter quinella at the Ashburton trials yesterday. The Rakaia based duo filled the first two placings in the opening heat of the day with Gerard driving Man of Change to a big victory and Sarah running home strongly into second on Leo’s Gift. Both horses were engaged in the qualifying heat to enable them to be able to start at official races and both ran under the required time and were on their best behaviour
Exciting staying prospect Chocante has returned to Stephen Marsh’s Cambridge stable. The four-yearold son of Shocking has been on the easy list since he overcame a three wide passage without cover to win the Gr.3 Counties Cup at Pukekohe in November. “He had a couple of minor leg problems and we didn’t want to rush him back,” Marsh said. heat by three-and-a-half lengths in a time of 3.13 for the 2400-metre stand. O’Reilly will be back in action today at Phar Lap Raceway in Timaru where he has a handy book of drives. The locally-trained Handsome Hero, who won at Ashburton on Boxing Day, looks one his best drives based on a good second last time out when having his first start in the tough C1 grade. O’Reilly will also team up his brother, Patrick, to drive Carbonado who is knocking on the door of a victory while his other drives, Stellar Success, Sundon’s Flyer and Stoney Eyre, all have each-way prospects.

‘I can win own race’ The jockey whose boyfriend steered his horse into the path of two rivals set to beat her in a bid to protect her lead during a weekend race has told friends, “I can win my own race.” Norwegian-born Anna Jordsjo, 21, is “not in a great place” after Josh Cartwright’s unprecedented move on the Morphettville track on Saturday, which could see him facing a lengthy ban. Cartwright’s move, crashing into two other horses, helped Ms Jordsjo’s mount Murti, win the race. The 22-yearold Victorian jockey, will face a steward’s inquiry this week.
Wellington a favourite haunt for Riccarton trainer Pitman Michael Pitman always looks forward to his visits to the capital. The Riccarton trainer’s sole Group One win came at Trentham, his first Group Two victory came on the track and he has also enjoyed regular success at the Wellington Cup meeting. Pitman, who trains in partnership with his son Matthew, won the opening race at the 2017 carnival last weekend and has genuine hopes in the two remaining Group One races at the meeting. His talented sprinter First Serve (right) is fourth favourite for Saturday’s J. R. & N. Berkett Telegraph and stablemate Son Of Maher is fourth favourite for the Harcourts Thorndon Mile on January 28. First Serve did not make her debut until last March, when she comfortably won a maiden on her home track. Two starts later she beat all bar Xtravagant in the Gr.3 Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes at Te Rapa.
“Since then she has won another five races and kept going ahead,” Pitman said. At her last appearance, First Serve accounted for five rivals at Waikouaiti on January 1. “She didn’t beat much, but carried 62.5kg and won easily,” Pitman said. “She’s not the biggest mare and to win well with that weight was very encouraging. “One of her strengths is that she can settle on the pace, but not use up much energy and still quicken. She can take bad luck out of the equation and I don’t think I’ve had a horse with better racing manners.” Sam Wynne has ridden First Serve in all her races and there will be no change for a Group One assignment. “Sam rides a lot of work for us, she is a very talented rider and has a first class attitude,” Pitman said. – NZ Racing Desk

The toughest nine-year-old? Evnika Saadvakass may just be the toughest nine year-old girl in the world. Saadvakass’s father, Rustam, has been training her as a boxer since her third birthday, and boy, does it show. Clips of her doing things such as throwing 100 punches in a minute have been spread around the Internet for years, and now her father is trying to capitalise on that attention by marketing her training regime as something you can replicate at home with an “Evnik Simulator” for the low cost of $49.99. The Kazakh family, who live in Voronezh in Russia, train five days a week - often in the woods outside their home and are taught how to dodge and land blows. Rustram puts his children through their paces once in the morning and again in the evening, and believes the discipline teaches courage and perseverance. The seriously-tough fam-
ily are pictured sparring with each other in the woods and in the gym with eight-year-old Evnika usually leading the way. Evnika’s proud father spotted her emerging talent when she was just four, and she can now throw 47 punches in 30 seconds with one hand. The nine-year-old said: ‘I like boxing because when I throw a side hook and I hit hard, I like the sound it makes. “I also like when I’m punching fast and my feet join in. “And when I’m doing a combination of punches and I go in fast, fast, fast, leaning in for the hit.” When a video of Evnika’s lightning speed went viral, Rustram said he was inundated with messages from people amazed by her ability. He said: “When people see what Evnika does they are thrilled with emotion with joy and excitement. “They start to point and say that’s the guy who trains Evnika.” - NZME

Sport Wood valued at $25m Striker Chris Wood is being lined up to join his All Whites team-mate Winston Reid at West Ham. Wood is being chased by two English Premier League clubs including the Hammers, according to an ESPN report. But Wood’s club Leeds, who play in the Championship division, have put a $25m price tag on him in an effort to keep the big striker as they chase promotion into the EPL. Mid-table West Ham and relegation threatened Sunderland are chasing the 25-yearold, who has scored 17 goals in 29 games in all competitions for Leeds this season.

Year off to great start If one is to begin how one intends to continue then the Ashburton Golf Club looks in good shape for 2017. The club held its opening day for the New Year on Saturday with a large number of golfers turning up to take in the action and get out on the course in what were perfect
golfing conditions. With a busy schedule ahead, especially during the early stages of the year, club officials were ecstatic to see a good contingent of players turn out to play in the A. C. Browne Cup mixed pairs events. After a day of quality play
across the field it was Stewart and Janice Dunlop who emerged on top of the field with a nett score of 62. Other winners in the tournament were: Peter and Marilyn Walker, Tim Newton and Mary Lou Watson and Merv and Kathryn Green. In the men’s section, the
winners of the Smith Salver were Tufuga Sa and Ken Clucas who both scored nett 62 rounds while Brent Clarke and Paul Greer, Jordan Green and Neil MacDonald, Royce Jamieson and Mark Holmes on countback from Bruce Day and Peter Pratt were also all in on the prizes.
Adams sidelined Concussion ruled Kiwis NBA star Steven Adams out for the Oklahoma City Thunders’ clash with Los Angeles Clippers yesterday. Adams left Monday’s win over Sacramento in the third quarter, after falling to the ground and banging his head on the court. Tickets go like hotcakes The heavyweight showdown between Great British boxer Anthony Joshua and Ukraine’s Wladimir Klitschko is set to become the biggest fight in British history with ticket sales hitting the 80,000 mark. Last month, the first 50,000 tickets for the Wembley bout were sold within hours and the latest release of another 30,000 tickets have also been snapped up quickly.
