Mid Cantabrians are being advised to batten down the hatches as a weather “bomb low” is forecast to hit the central South Island today. The MetService has issued a severe weather warning for the Ashburton area, forecasting heavy rain for the Canterbury headwaters and severe northwest gales. The bomb low will leave plummeting temperatures in its wake, rapidly raise
river levels and could see a dusting of snow on the mountains. For Wairarapa, Wellington, Marlborough and Canterbury north of Ashburton, severe north-west gales gusting to 150 or 160km/hour are expected in exposed places from late this afternoon until dawn tomorrow. Winds of this strength can bring down trees and powerlines, damage unsecured structures, lift roofs and make travel hazardous, the MetService said. Communications meteorologist Lisa

Murray said Ashburton had been chosen as the general dividing line for where the strong winds were expected to occur, and as such the town was included in the severe weather warning. South of the town was also expected to receive strong wind gusts, in the 100km/h range.
