A 16-year-old has been described as brave by police, after she fought off an attacker while walking in Ashburton on Tuesday night.

Ashburton Police senior sergeant Scott Banfield described the incident, which occurred at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds at 9.50pm, as an attempted sexual assault.

“A 16-year-old girl has been attacked while she was walking through the showgrounds and she’s been dragged to the ground,” Mr Banfield said.

“The offender, who we believe at this stage was not known to her, has tried to remove her jersey and as a result a struggle has ensued and she has done very well, she’s been very brave, and she’s escaped.”

The girl raised the alarm and police were quickly on the scene, with a cordon put in place and a police dog handler called in. A suspect, located nearby, was arrested and held in custody on a breach of bail charge.

Mr Banfield said enquiries into the attempted sexual assault were ongoing and, although the arrested man had

not been charged in relation to Tuesday night’s incident, police were not seeking anyone else in relation to it.

Mr Banfield praised the actions of the victim.

“She’s done a really good job getting away and fortunately she wasn’t injured, but she was very shaken and upset,” he said.

Mr Banfield said he wanted to reiterate to the public that police were not seeking anyone else in relation to the attack, and they did not believe there was any reason for the public to be concerned.

Spanish lessons under way in Ashburton

Consonants, vowels and diphthongs were at the tip of the tongue during Ashburton’s first Spanish lessons yesterday.

Eight school-aged children spent the afternoon learning the Spanish alphabet during a class

by Argentinian Gisela Cuadrado.

Mrs Cuadrado is offering basic Spanish lessons to pre-schoolers, school-aged children and adults during four classes every Wednesday.

The lessons consist of games, activities, songs and audio to help people learn the second most widely spoken language in the world.

The classes are held at the Holy Name Parish Pastoral Rooms on Winter Street on Wednesdays.

More than 7000 hours completed in 2015

Offenders completed more than 7000 hours of court-ordered community work in Mid Canterbury last year.

Only community and nonprofit groups are eligible to take advantage of the sentence which requires convicted offenders to complete a set number of hours of unpaid work.

Department of Corrections Southern Regional commissioner Ben Clark said the sentence encouraged offenders to take

responsibility in the community in which their crimes were committed, and offered the chance to learn new skills.

In total 114 community work sentences were handed down, resulting in 7249 hours of community work in the district in 2015.

“Offenders on community work support wide ranging community projects for groups such as schools, community groups, the Department of Conservation and local councils,” Mr Clark said.

Projects undertaken by community work groups in the district last year have included the development of walkways at Staveley and maintenance and beautification support at Awa Awa Rata and Smallbone reserves, Hakatere Marae, Methven walking track and Highbank cemetery.

The Ashburton showgrounds and a number of local schools and playcentres have also benefited.

“Many of the organisations we work with are on extremely

tight budgets and depend on the support of volunteers,” Mr Clark said.

About half of those sentenced to community work were unemployed at the time.

“There is a strong correlation between employment and offenders maintaining a crimefree life,” Mr Clark said.

“Through community work, offenders are able to learn new skills and work habits which may help them secure employment and reduce the likelihood of their re-offending.”

English denies data manipulation claims Finance Minister Bill English has denied a claim that government departments are manipulating data to achieve policy targets.

The Salvation Army said in a “state of the nation” report yesterday that some official statistics reflected departments changing their policies, rather than real changes in the social indicators that were supposed to be measured.

For example, it said Child, Youth and Family had achieved an apparent reduction in substantiated cases of child abuse and neglect simply by investigating only 30 per cent of all cases notified to it, down from 42 per cent in 2010-11.

Mr English said many of the Government’s other Better Public Services (BPS) targets used statistics that could not be manipulated by departments.

“While we welcome any debate on how progress is measured, any implication that government departments are using data and targets in a less than transparent way is completely incorrect,” he said.

“Many of the Government’s BPS measures – for example infant immunisation, crime, welfare dependency, ECE participation, educational attainment and total crime figures – are, or incorporate, tier 1 official statistics, which are the most important and highquality statistics in New Zealand.”

He said the report generally showed that the Government was “making good progress in key areas”.

“On the Salvation Army’s 22 indicators, nine show good progress, eight have not changed, three have slipped back, and there is insufficient evidence in two areas,” he said.

“The report shows, for example, that the number of children living on benefits has fallen to the lowest level since at least 1998, crime rates are falling, more young people are getting NCEA Level 2 and more jobs are being created.”

Support hub set up for Tully trial

The High Court trial of the man accused of murdering two women in Work and Income’s Ashburton offices in 2014 will begin in Christchurch on Monday, and community groups have rallied to establish a support hub in the town.

Russell John Tully has denied the shooting deaths of Work and Income workers Peggy Turuhira

Noble, 67, and Susan Leigh Cleveland, 55, on September 1, 2014.

Tully has also denied attempting to murder two other staff members – Lindy Louise Curtis, 43, who was shot in the leg and seriously injured, and Kim Elizabeth Adams.

Ashburton-based Presbyterian Support social worker Cathie Withington has been working with Salvation Army Major Ken Smith to provide support for those

requiring assistance during the trial.

“We’ll be based at the Salvation Army church, across the road from the temporary Work and Income office on Cass Street, Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons,” Mrs Withington said.

In the case of significant developments during the trial, hours will be adjusted to meet the need for the service and a sign outside the church will indicate whether

it is open. Work and Income clients will also receive information about the support service.

“Between us we arranged for a place for quiet reflection and a separate place for a cuppa and a chat,” Mrs Withington said.

“Ken’s got volunteers who will help out also, so there will always be one or two folk about whenever we’re open.

The site of the tragedies, further south on Cass Street, has been ex-

tensively refurbished and due to open as Community House during the trial, which is set down for two to three weeks before Justice Cameron Mander in the High Court in Christchurch.

Tully also faces charges of unlawfully possessing firearms and ammunition, setting a mantrap and theft.

He has been remanded in custody since he was arrested on the day of the shootings.

Dogs can do anything ...

Dogs are moving from the driver’s seat to the cockpit in a new TV show tracking a Kiwi dog trainer’s attempts to teach man’s best friend to pilot a plane.

Animals on Q owner Mark Vette will lead a final, 10-week-long “flight school” for the three dogs who top an earlier series of problem-solving tasks assigned to 12 shortlisted dogs.

Mr Vette, who is based at Waimauku in north-west Auckland and was behind the project to train three rescue dogs to drive three years ago, could not be contacted yesterday morning.

But the Daily Mail reported his latest project was being filmed in the United Kingdom as part of a Sky TV reality show, Dogs Might Fly. The 12 dogs chosen from the United Kingdom and Spain for the initial tests include a twoyear-old Pyrenean shepherd called Chilli, a collie-lurcher cross called Alfie and a boisterous puppy named Tess. Three strays are among those who will have their cognitive skills put to the ultimate test.

Tests will take place at a mansion in Sussex, and will include seeing how the dogs respond to various stimulation tasks. – NZME

Fairton fire threatens buildings

Firefighters spent over an hour battling a blaze which threatened two buildings in Fairton yesterday morning.

The fire, which encompassed a shed and two macrocarpa

hedges, started on Silver Fern Farms property on Office Road at 8.06am.

Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Alan Burgess said the shed appeared to be the starting point of the fire but they did not know what

caused it.

The blaze, which was about 15m along one hedge and 30m along the other, threatened two garages owned by Silver Fern Farms, but was put out in time to prevent any damage.

Firefighters from Ashburton

Volunteer Fire Brigade, Ashburton Rural Fire Force, Pendarves Rural Fire Force and a truck from Silver Fern Farms spent just over an hour battling the flames and were there for nearly two hours.

Enquiries into the cause of the fire are continuing.

Students make the most of upgraded pool

Longbeach School students have been making the most of their community’s newly upgraded swimming pool with professional lessons this week.

The Willowby Pool, which is used by the school and members of the community, was renovated at the end of last year following a large community fundraising effort.

Willowby Pool committee treasurer Jayne McLaren said the school used to bus into the EA Networks Centre for lessons, but decided to take advantage of their own upgraded facilities.

Every day this week the EA Networks Centre has sent instructors to the pool for the entire school to have lessons.

“It’s a great opportunity.”

Students use the pool every day during terms one and four.

It takes about 200 voluntary hours and $3000 to keep the pool running every year.

GPs kept busy with drug use

What is on offer at Acads?

Methamphetamine and prescription pills have become a feature of the drug-use landscape in Mid Canterbury, but alcohol remains the number one drug of concern, says an Ashburton GP. Ashburton GP spokesman Dr Mick Tarry said alcohol was part of the daily work within general practices, while presently methamphetamine was more of a oneto-four-times a year feature.

However, other players including marijuana and prescription pills, also added to GP workloads.

Dr Tarry said unfortunately many GPs will have had the experience of being “hoodwinked” into prescribing a controlled substance which had been redirected to the street.

“This is something GPs and pharmacists are constantly alert to, so that the possibility of this happening is hopefully minimised,” he said.

There were also significant penalties for doctors who knowingly provided drugs of abuse to patients whom they knew or suspected were misdirecting prescription drugs for their own addiction or that of others.

“Any prescription drug has potential for misuse whether it be inappropriate use of an antibiotic or selling OxyContin [strong pain-

killer] on the street [or via] social media,” Dr Tarry said.

Marijuana use was also a concerning, for a number of reasons.

It resulted in a delayed reaction time which contributed to farm, workplace and vehicle accidents and its effect on young people’s learning capabilities as well as motivation was of concern, Dr Tarry said.

It also often complicated the diagnosis and recovery process for people experiencing mental health problems.

With issues around the ease of access into residential substance abuse programmes, Dr Tarry said there was a lot of focus on managing addiction problems within the community.

As a result, many GPs regularly interact with Ashburton’s Community Alcohol and Drug Service (Acads).

Dr Tarry said GPs found Acads very helpful, especially when a pressing situation unfolded and advice was needed.

Most GPs would see between one and

four of their patients engaging with Acads each month, he said.

With a busy year ahead, Acads is getting stuck into organising its services.

While some people may think Ashburton’s Alcohol and Drug Service merely offers advice and provides information, there is much more to it than that.

Manager Chris Clark said not only does Acads offer free oneto-one counselling, youth counselling and group counselling, it also runs workshops on topics like mindfulness and help for recidivist drink drivers.

The NGO (nongovernmental organisation) will even refer people to residential care and other levels of treatment.

Its counselling service is diverse and does not only focus on addiction, but related matters including relationship issues, the community, mental health, stress and anger.

Staff at Acads are in the early stages of planning its services for the

year and always take into account the needs of clients, Ms Clark said.

Co-worker Chris Levitt said a men’s group could be on the cards – if the demand was there.

As with any drug and alcohol service, trends related to use and treatment appeared, but both Ms Clark and Mr Levitt agreed alcohol remained a consistent drug of concern.

Mr Levitt said methamphetamine often reared its ugly head in the district, as did synthetic cannabis – although the latter had died down of late – and prescription drugs were also an issue.

Help was available for all sorts of addictions and assistance was very individual, Mr Levitt said.

Due to the range of services it provides, Acads’ client base was varied and the service used by a wide cross-section of the community.

“We really can look at a broad range,” Ms Clark said.

“It’s tailored to people’s needs … very client centered.”

While work with individuals falls into Acads’ clinical portfolio, it also does a lot of work in the public health sector.

Acads spends a lot of time running campaigns and educating school students on the effects of drugs and alcohol and is heavily involved in secondary school after-ball functions, the planning for which will begin shortly.

A long search for a new home for Ashburton Community Corrections has finally come to an end.

After five years working out of portacoms at the old Cass Street facility due to having outgrown the existing facility, Corrections has moved its Ashburton base to a new, purpose-built facility in Mona Square.

Finding a new home wasn’t easy though for a service like Corrections, Ashburton service manager Wendy Hampton said.

“It can be difficult to find appropriate locations for Corrections services as Corrections bal-

ances any concerns of neighbours and the need to make our services easily accessible to local offenders.

“Ashburton Community Corrections has a great relationship with local service partners including mana whenua. We look forward to growing these relationships as we work together with the people of Ashburton to help local offenders make and sustain positive changes in their lives.”

The new base meant an improved ability for offenders to attend rehabilitive or education programmes on site, and gave the benefit of an ergonomic environment which promoted collabora-

tive effort and the integration of resources.

Community Corrections sites were where staff manage community-based offenders and their sentences. As well as making sure offenders comply with their sentences, Community Corrections provided offenders with rehabilitation programmes, education and job training that turn their lives around and break the cycle of re-offending.

Ms Hampton said it was important the facility was located centrally as offenders lived across the area.

The new site would also be the base for community work,

from where teams of offenders go out each day into the community to do reparative work on projects including walking track development, litter clearance and grounds maintenance.

Each year offenders provided over two million hours of community work in New Zealand, including projects for councils, community organisations and government agencies.

In Ashburton in 2015, 7249 hours were completed by 114 offenders.

The new Ashburton Community Corrections facility is now open, but its official opening won’t be held until April.

Weather gives competitors a torrid time

Cheryl and Ed Dowler are no strangers to collecting gardening awards but the weather conspired against them, putting this year’s entry on the line for a while.

However, with a carload of new plants and a lot of hard work it all came together in time for Sunday’s judging of the Ashburton Garden Competition and the couple collected the premier award for the eighth time.

“The weather made things very difficult this year – the recent rain caused problems with mould,” Mrs Dowler said.

“We were lucky to be able to buy new plants after the weather came right, and we were able to spend Saturday in the garden.”

A carpenter by trade, Mr Dowler built the couple’s home on Balmoral Place in 1993 and two years later they collected the best new garden award in the Ashburton Garden competition.

“We’ve been at it ever since – we are both very keen gardeners,” Mrs Dowler said.

“Every year we say never again but you get addicted.

Bad time for cyclists A cyclist in his 80s was hit by a car in Ashburton on Tuesday night, the day after a man suffered critical injuries after being hit by a car in the town. The man in his 50s who was involved in Monday’s accident – at the intersection of Bridge Street and Princes Street – remains in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital. Meanwhile, the man hit on Tuesday night – at the intersection of Walnut Avenue and East Street – was taken to Ashburton Hospital with moderate injuries. That accident happened at about 7.15pm on Tuesday.

Workplace death A man has died after a workplace accident near Opotiki. A St John spokeswoman said they had been called to an address in Omaio near Opotiki where a 50-year-old man had suffered critical injuries. He died at the scene. Police attended and Worksafe has been informed.

St John was called at 11.54am. One ambulance attended.

Births on the rise Nearly 4000 more babies were born in New Zealand last year than in 2014, an increase of 7 per cent. It was the first time in four years the number of births has risen rather than fallen. Statistics New Zealand yesterday released numbers that showed there were just over 61,000 births last year, up 3796 from 2014. “Higher fertility rates and population growth led to more births in 2015,” population statistics manager Jo-Anne Skinner said. “The rise in births follows decreasing numbers in the preceding four years.”

A Hastings public swimming pool has been closed after 20 high school students began vomiting during the school’s swimming sports yesterday. Taradale High School principal, Stephen Hensman, said 20 students became sick shortly after entering the pool at about 9am. Another 20 swimmers felt ill soon after. “We made a call very early on to call it off as obviously something wasn’t right,” Mr Hensman said. It’s understood a water-borne bug has been ruled out as the effects were too immediate. He said pool staff tested the chlorine levels of the pool, which were normal. - NZME

West Coast battered by wind, rain

By Catherine Gaffaney It’s the perfect storm – rain, thunderstorms, and wind – and it appears the West Coast is getting the worst of it.

Several Hokitika streets were flooded yesterday afternoon after more than 200mm of rain fell in the town in 18 hours. A water main also burst on a central street.

Hokitika Civil Defence spokesman Andy Thompson said an emergency hadn’t been declared but residents were being warned more rain was on the way.

He said no one was evacuated and there wasn’t any reports of flooding in houses or businesses, but there were sewage problems.

As of 3pm, Hokitika police and fire hadn’t had any flooding-related callouts.

West Coast Regional Council hydrologist Stefan Beaumont said by 10am the Hokitika River reached “first stage alarm” levels, and at Franz Josef, the Waiho River was going through its second. But by yesterday afternoon, the rivers were starting to plateau.

Meanwhile, the New Zealand Transport Agency was advising motorists to take extreme care on West Coast roads due to slips and flooding on State Highway 6 south of Ross and Haast, and across South Westland, Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers.

A slip blocked one lane in the Fox Hills area between Franz Josef and Fox Glacier.

A severe weather warning and severe thunderstorm watch were in place for Marlborough, Nelson, Buller and Westland.

Downpours could reach 2-40mm an hour from Westland to Nelson and northern Marlborough.

MetService meteorologist Lisa Murray said a front moving up the country brought the heavy rain.

Rain was expected to ease in Westland yesterday afternoon and early evening, but more heavy rain was likely on Friday morning.

WeatherWatch was predicting rain to intensify in many places last night, and today is expected to be wet in the west and north.

The rain would ease in most places on Friday, according to WeatherWatch.

Report to stay secret A report that cleared police handling a case where schoolboys stupefied girls then posted lewd photos on social media is to stay secret. The Independent Police Conduct Authority is refusing to release the official document that examined how police handled the case dubbed Roast Busters 2, despite finding the investigation was handled in an exemplary manner. It is being denied on the grounds of a secrecy provision.

The authority investigated how police handled the case after three people laid complaints.

Vaccine targets cancer A new study raises the prospect of vaccine-like treatments that protect against cancer for life.

Scientists have identified and tracked rare immune system cells that could be programmed to keep cancer at bay over a period of many years.

The “stem memory” T-cells would keep patrolling the body looking out for enemy tumour cells. When any are encountered, they would be recognised and attacked.

Lead researcher Professor Chiara Bonini, from the University of Milan in Italy, said: “T-cells are a living drug, and in particular they have the potential to persist in our body for our whole lives.

“Some of these memory Tcells will persist through the entire life of the organism ...

Imagine translating this to cancer immunotherapy, to have memory T-cells that remember the cancer and are ready for it when it comes back.”

For such an approach to work, the memory T-cells would have to be primed by genetic modification to attack the target cancer.

But the first step is to single out those cells with the ability

Commenting on the study, British immunologist Professor Daniel Davis, from the University of Manchester, said: “These T-cells, the stem memory T-cells first identified in 2011, have stem cell-like properties and are thought to be important for long-lived immune responses.

“The implication is that infusing genetically modified versions of these particular T-cells ... could provide a longlasting immune response against a person’s cancer.

“Immunotherapy has great potential to revolutionise cancer treatment and this study shows which type of T-cells might be especially useful to manipulate for long-lasting protection.”

Prosecutors believe human error caused train crash

Former UN leader dies

A deadly train crash in southern Germany that killed 11 people was probably caused by human error on the part of the train dispatcher, prosecutors said yesterday.

As well as the deaths, more than 80 people were injured when two commuter trains slammed into each other on a single-line track near Bad Aibling, 60 kilometres southeast of Munich, early on February 9.

Prosecutor Wolfgang Giese said his office has opened a criminal investigation against the 39-year-old dispatcher on suspicion of negligent homicide, bodily harm and interference with rail traffic.

“Had he (the dispatcher) behaved according to the rules, the trains would not have collided,” Giese said.

He didn’t identify the man, who was interviewed by police in the presence of his lawyer.

Investigators believe the dispatcher, whose job involves directing rail traffic and ensuring safety on the tracks, sent a wrong signal to the trains.

After noticing his mistake,

Fellow prosecutor Juergen Branz said there was no indication the dispatcher was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash.

“What we have at the moment is a terrible error in this particular situation,” he said.

If convicted, the dispatcher could face up to five years in prison.

Former UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali has died aged 93, Venezuelan UN Ambassador Rafael Dario Ramirez Carreno, president of the UN Security Council for February, announced yesterday.

An Egyptian, Boutros-Ghali served one five-year term as UN chief from 1992 to 1996.

The 15-member Security Council observed a minute’s silence after the announcement.

As the United Nations’ first secretary-general from Africa, Boutros-Ghali associated himself with the famine in Somalia and organised the first massive UN relief operation in the Horn of Africa nation.

But success eluded him there and elsewhere as the United Nations tottered in an increasingly disorderly postcommunist world, with the world body and the big Security Council powers underestimating the deep animosity behind many conflicts.

He was criticised for the UN’s failure to act during the 1994 Rwandan Genocide and for not pushing hard enough for UN intervention to end Angola’s civil war in the 1990s, which was at the time one of the longest running conflicts in the world.

Fake tan fail A woman’s attempt at a bronzed body went very wrong after she trialled a tip she saw on Facebook. Imogen Silversides from the UK posted an image of herself looking the same colour “as a dining table” after she was inspired to use a paint roller to apply her fake tan, prompted by a viral Facebook status. Silversides says she decided to try the tanning tip after seeing Amy Ridler’s shared photo and comment about how impressed she was with her roller results. But Silversides didn’t quite have the same outcome, posting a picture of herself covered in dark brown tan and holding a paint roller. She captioned her photo: “Who ever the girl was that recommend [sic] to apply fake tan with a paint roller is one lying f***.”

Sir Paul turned away Sir Paul McCartney, Beck, and Taylor Hawkins were refused entry to a Grammy Awards afterparty. The Beatles icon and his rocker pals tried to head to an exclusive post-awards bash hosted by the rapper Tyga at Los Angeles nightclub Argyle. How safe is safe?

I

n an ideal world, we could all walk the streets without fear.

Mums should be able to put the kids to bed then leave dad in charge while they go for a quick walk even if it’s getting a bit dark outside, or the kids should be able to jump on their bikes and nip to the local shop to get a loaf of bread or some lollies.

But we don’t live in an ideal world; recent events both near and far have hammered that message home.

A five-year-old girl abducted in Palmerston North sent shivers running down the spine of any parent whose child walks to school, and in Ashburton, an 11-year-old girl being offered lollies by a strange man in a car reminded parents that things like that can happen anywhere.

Ashburton always was a safe town and it largely still is.

Most of the time, we can head out for a walk or let our kids play out on the street and nothing untoward will happen. But there’s always a danger something, or someone, is lurking in the shadows.

That’s the reality of the world we live in today.

We live in a good, safe town, but even good, safe towns have their share of undesirables.

A 16-year-old girl attacked while walking through the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds at 9.50pm on Tuesday night may trigger questions of what a 16-year-old girl was doing walking through such a place at that time of the night.

It’s a fair question and it’s probably something that a lot of us wouldn’t do, but the point is we should be able to do it. We should be able to walk around our neighbourhood free of fear of what might happen.

But there’s always a chance that trouble could be waiting around the corner and everyone needs to be prepared for that, kids especially.

Kids are trusting and vulnerable. If a kind man offers them lollies, or asks them if they want to see his puppy in his car, it’s likely to be a tempting offer to some.

Parents need to be proactive and ensure their children know about stranger danger.

Knowledge is the best way to protect them, other than keeping them within sight 24/7, and that’s impossible.

Kids need their freedom to learn and become independent.

As parents, you have to let them do that, but you also have to ensure they’ve got all the tools and knowledge to keep themselves safe.

Is there a K or G in Allenton?

W

hy do I love working with children? Because often they don’t have a social filter in some interactions.

This means they can come out with statements without knowing they may have crossed an unwritten social rule.

Take for example the fact that I grew a beard during holidays as part of my future role in the Variety theatre Ashburton production Oliver. I thought a beard would be neater and tidier than being constantly shambolically unshaven for my role as Bill Sykes.

So after six weeks I was more than used to it and the sight in the mirror every morning, but the gorgeous children of Tinwald were not!

I love one of the first reactions as a young girl saw me, stopped and shouted “Oh no! It’s a hairy monster!” and ran away laughing. Many times children would see me for the first time and simply blurt out their thoughts and reactions.

The most common reaction though was for children to point out that I “had a bed on my face” and no that’s not a typo.

Children would tell me I had a

bed. So of course I had to tease them by asking, “is there a pillow on my lips?” or “are there sheets on my eyes?” to which they looked at me strangely and said no they meant I had a bed!!!

I then correct them by saying, “oh, you mean a beard”.

One boy innocently asked me if I like my bed, and of course I replied I loved it especially on Saturdays when I didn’t have to get up from it. He still looks at me strangely.

You see children learn language from hearing the people around them speak it first (listening). They then say the words (speaking), then they learn to recognise them (reading) and then they learn to represent them (writing) and then they learn to use them as forms of communication.

What is crucial in all of this is the correct early modelling of the

language to the young brain. All of us are teachers.

All of us have the capacity to model correct speech and here is where I need to ask the question of the average Ashburtonian – is there a K or G in Allenton?

On countless occasions I have heard well-heeled, long-time residents of Ashburton refer to a suburb called Allinkton or Allington.

Now I could understand if you had a cold and gave me directions to “da Allinkton shobs on Muddle Rode”.

But does the pronunciation of Allington hark back to when Chinese workers occupied some part of that neighbourhood? (Some of you are struggling to see how I linked that) Of course, if we as speakers of English as our first language cannot say a very English sounding name like Allenton, then it’s no wonder the local Maori word for this region – Hakatere is almost universally ruined by locals and sounds like “Hacker Tree”.

If you say Hacker Tree, then do you call the Maori challenge issued by our All Blacks – The Hacker? No, you don’t and if a foreigner called it that, you teach

them to say “Haka”. So if you can say Haka, then you can say Hakatere.

If we want our children to succeed in the crucial early years of language acquisition, we need to model the correct structures ourselves.

If you were to ask any new entrant teacher the number one issue they have with children in writing, it will be the fact they cannot hear the sounds in the words they speak or are modelled. If they cannot hear them, then they cannot write them.

Instead they write the most predominant sounds they hear, and you could imagine the type of writing teachers have to decipher.

Now I’m off to the Allink Ton Me Dick All Sinter coz I have a bed on my face.

Fletcher profits soar 51 per cent

BY JONATHAN UNDERHILL Fletcher Building, the listed building supplies and construction group, posted a 51 per cent gain in first-half profit, with growth in its newly aligned building products and distribution units making up for weaker earnings from Formica and New Zealand housing developments.

Fletcher shares rose 2 per cent to $6.99 after the company reported net profit of $172 million, meeting analyst expectations, for the six months ended December 31, on a 2 per cent gain in revenue to $4.4 billion.

The company also affirmed guidance for full-year of earnings before interest, tax and significant items of $650 million to $690 million, from $653 million last year, excluding a gain on the sale of Rocla Quarry Products. Its interim dividend of 19 cents is up from 18 cents a year earlier, beating expectations.

Earnings in the latest six months included a $10 million gain related to the sale of Rocla

Quarries assets, while the rest of the $85 million profit from the sale will be booked in the second half. At the same time last year it took $66 million in impairments and costs to close manufacturing plants in Australia.

Fletcher this month announced it had reorganised into five divisions and reported firsthalf results on that basis. It has been shedding unprofitable assets to focus on businesses where it has a dominant position, acquiring Higgins Group Holdings, New Zealand’s third-largest road

recorded a 13 per cent decline in earnings to $53 million, driven by a 70 per cent decline to $6 million for Formica, while Laminex lifted earnings by 11 per cent to $41 million and roof tiles had a 50 per cent gain to $6 million.

Earnings from the residential and land development division fell 27 per cent to $24 million, mainly reflecting reduced home sales at its Stonefields development. Sales rose 7 per cent to $108 million and the company said it plans to ramp up development of a number of Auckland sites in the next few years, and add to work in Christchurch.

Construction division earnings rose 20 per cent to $36 million, as revenue rose 17 per cent to $748 million, and was inflated by yearearlier charges of $16 million.

Excluding one-time items, earnings fell 22 per cent. The business had a record $3.3 billion backlog of contracted work as at December 31 and said the decline in earnings in the first half mainly reflected the timing of major projects.

Separately yesterday it announced a joint venture with National Aluminium, or Nalco, folding its aluminium assets into the JV and closing its own manufacturing plant in Auckland within 18 months.

The building products division made the biggest contribution to first-half earnings, led by building materials such as wallboard and insulation, and increased cement

volumes in New Zealand. The division lifted operating earnings by 65 per cent to $142 million, as revenue fell 4 percent to $1.27 billion. Earnings included one-time gains of $10 million, compared to $28 million of charges a year earlier.

New Zealanders’ perceptions of inflation have become even more subdued, adding to the case for a further interest rate cut by the Reserve Bank.

The RBNZ Survey of Expectations shows respondents see annual inflation one year out at 1.09 per cent, down from the 1.51 per cent rate seen in the last survey three months ago. Expected inflation in two years’ time has been lowered to 1.63 per cent from 1.85 per cent.

That’s the lowest level of expectations since 1994, according to Westpac Banking Corp, and follows similar declines in marketbased measures of inflation. The survey shows inflation at the end of the current quarter is seen at 0.2 per cent, down from 0.29 per cent three months ago, while for

next quarter, the rate was lowered to 0.33 per cent from 0.46 per cent.

The New Zealand dollar dropped about half a US cents, to 66.11 US cents from 66.63 cents, after the survey was released, on speculation the case for a further rate cut is building. Westpac chief economist Dominick Stephens says a cut in March “is a live possibility”, although it expects a move in June.

Stephens says the survey calls into question the central bank’s argument that it can tolerate an extended period of extremely weak inflation because it views the phenomenon as temporary and expects monetary policy to drive inflation back to the 2 per cent mid point of its target band in the future.

“A crucial piece of evidence in the RBNZ’s argument has been

that inflation expectations remained close to 2 per cent, even when inflation was low,” he said.

“Falling inflation expectations across market and survey-based measures is now calling that argument into question. Low inflation expectations may start to impact wage claims and price setting behaviour, in turn leading to even greater downward pressure on inflation.”

The 90-day bank bill rate is seen at 1.62 per cent at the end of the current quarter, down from 2.79 per cent in the previous survey.

One year out the rate is seen at 2.52 per cent, down from 2.79 per cent. Still, quarterly economic growth is seen slightly more buoyant, at 0.65 per cent for the previous quarter, up from 0.49 per cent three months ago, and 0.58 per cent in the current quarter, up from 0.5 per cent. - NZME

A2 Milk shares soared to a record after the specialty milk marketer boosted first-half profit and raised its estimate for full-year earnings on a surge in demand for its infant formula in Australia, New Zealand, and China.

Profit jumped to $10.1 million in the six months ending December 31, from $125,000 in the same period last year, the New Zealandfounded and Australian-based company said in a statement. The shares increased 26 per cent to

$2.55, after earlier touching a record $2.60.

Substantial growth in sales of a2 Platinum formula and a 5 per cent rise in fresh milk sales in Australia, the category that launched the brand across the Tasman, boosted total revenue 86 per cent to $139.1 million. Australia and New Zealand still dominate revenue at $127 million. Managing director Geoff Babidge said following a period of development a2 Platinum infant formula had become a significant contributor to growth and earnings, account-

ing for 53 per cent of revenue now compared to just 47 per cent in November.

“It’s growing fast and we see that continuing,” Babidge said. “In addition, we see positive prospects for growth of a2 Milk whole milk powder, which was first launched late last financial year.”

A2 increased its guidance for full-year earnings, saying it now expects earnings before income, tax, depreciation, and amortisation of $45 million to $49 million, up $12 million on the previous outlook.

Set filling aside to cool.

Preheat the oven to 200°C. Place pastry in a single layer on the bench to thaw Remove flesh from the chicken, discarding skin and bones.

Chop into bite size pieces. Mix the chicken into the cooled leek sauce.

Line a 28cm deep pie dish with pastry.

Spoon the filling into the dish and cover with pastry. Seal the edges and brush with egg yolk.

Prick the pastry twice to allow steam to escape.

Bake for 30-40 minutes or until puffed and golden.

The Government remains firm on agricultural emissions being outside of the Emission Trading Scheme (ETS), despite the Green Party and a Westpac report criticising its exclusion.

Westpac’s controversial independent report said not including agriculture would pass the financial burden of emissions on to other businesses and households.

And Green Party Primary Industries spokesperson Eugenie Sage said by being part of the ETS, agriculture could be shown to be taking much greater steps to give integrity to the New Zealand brand – and could be seen as a marketing opportunity.

“That clean green brand that we rely on to market all of our produce is looking very ragged around the edges in terms of water quality.”

BY MARGREET DIETZ Dairy product prices fell in the latest GlobalDairyTrade auction, sliding for the fourth consecutive time in 2016, as concern about worldwide oversupply weighs on sentiment. The GDT average winning price decreased 2.8 per cent to $US2235, down from $US2276 at the

previous auction two weeks ago. Some 22,021 tonnes of product was sold, down from 24,474 tonnes of product at the previous auction two weeks ago.

To be sure, the decline wasn’t as much as some had feared.

“Prices achieved at the GDT event were actually higher than anticipated,” AgriHQ dairy analyst Susan Kilsby said

in a note. “Ahead of the auc NZX Dairy Futures market indi could see a 4 per cent drop in t milk powder for product with 2016 delivery date. Instead the duction for this particular con less than 3 per cent.”

Green Party co-leader James Shaw said banks and businesses would end up paying so that the agricultural sector could pollute for free.

“National is actively choosing not to shift New Zealand to a clean, low-carbon economy, which will put both the future of our economy and environment at risk.”

However, Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy was adamant agricultural emissions would only be included in the ETS once practical technologies were available for farmers to reduce their emissions.

“And more progress is made by our trading partners on tackling their emissions.

“Adding a carbon tax to agriculture would hammer these industries which are the backbone of New Zealand’s economy.”

Mr Guy said it would drive up the cost of farming, and “ironically” mean that consumers buy

“Given that New Zealand only contributes 0.15 per cent of the world’s carbon emissions, such a policy would be shooting ourselves in the foot while doing little to improve the environment.”

Since 1990 dairy farmers had decreased greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram of milksolids by 18 per cent.

“We are strongly supporting the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases which now has 46 member countries.

“It targets research that will help grow more food, and more climate-resilient food systems, without growing greenhouse gas emissions.

“In December last year we announced an extra $20 million in funding for the GRA, on top of our initial investment of $45 million.”

There was a reasonable yarding of prime lambs at the Tinwald sale this week with the market improving by up to $5 for good quality lambs. Ewe numbers were steady with prices similar to the last few sales.

No store lambs were offered.

Stylish and family-friendly S

uzuki’s new compact, fivedoor, cross-over Vitara LTD is pictured beside Hooper’s Inlet on the seaward side of the always interesting, yet still overlooked, Otago Peninsula.

Highlights include the albatross colony, penguins, lover’s leap (popular post Valentines day?)

Larnach’s castle, historic gun emplacements, lonely beaches and much more.

We arrived there after a neat, meandering drive south, during which we kept as close to the coast as possible.

Accordingly we were able to enjoy the views en route, particularly so from from Karitane onwards.

Secluded Purakanui is a delight.

During the drive, the Vitara, with its convenient highish stance, easy access, decent 185mm ground clearance and optional AllGrip all-wheel-drive system (more about this later), demonstrated its abilities and comfort, both off the well beaten track and about Dunedin itself.

The test Vitara in its Horizon Orange metallic paint and white roof was the top of the range model.

It costs $36,790 plus ORCs. There’s three models below it offering a choice of two or four wheel drive, in JLX or LTD spec.

All share the same great-looking body which looks just how an SUV should –strong and a little aggressive, thanks to its neat clamshell bonnet, body mouldings, minimal overhangs and good under-body protection.

There’s also smart 17-inch alloys, LED day-time lights, roof rails and privacy glass.

Whilst parked in Port Chalmers, it so impressed some passing cruise ship passengers they thought it was a small Range Rover!

As well, all the Suzuki Vitara models are loaded with a very decent array of gear including an intuitive 7-inch touch-screen complete with sat-nav, smartphone, connectivity, reversing camera, and trip computer plus, climate air (with easy controls) and a neat, retro-look analogue clock.

I particularly liked the LTD’s dash presentation, which, with its hints of carbon fibre, diverts your attention from the hard, but no doubt durable cabin plastics.

Plus LTDs have a panoramic glass sunroof, keyless entry, extra audio speakers, parking sensors, leather/suede trim, and more.

Space and comfort up front was fine, and the rear as well, for two adults, although rather tall ones will notice the intrusion of the glass roof.

The large hatch reveals 375 litres of luggage space, more when the 60/40 split folding rear seat is down.

S-Cross, so there’s MacPherson struts at the front, and torsion beam rear, with coil springs all round.

The result is the handling and steering are both predictable and user-friendly.

There’s plenty of grip from the 215/55 Continental tyres, and the selectable 4WD system was great, particularly so on the peninsula’s windy shingle roads.

The ride is somewhat on the firmer side, and there’s a bit of coarse chip road noise, but overall it proved to be a very pleasant drive both on tour and about the city.

But what about the engine?

Well, it’s a 1.6 litre petrol which

develops 86 kW and 156 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm.

It is designed for, and likes, revs.

And it lets you know this when you spin above 4000rpm, though this is only really necessary with hill work.

And while 156Nm of torque may not seem a lot, the combination of the new six-speed auto which, according to need, quickly shuffles logically through its wide ratios.

That, combined with the Vitara’s light weight (1100kg), means a very acceptable all round performance together with excellent fuel economy, like 0-100km/h in 11 seconds and the stated, realis-

The selectable four-mode four wheel drive system helps out with both.

In the auto it’s mostly front wheel drive, with power to the rear wheels when any slip is detected.

But sport gives both the best engine/gearbox response and

also sets the 4WD for cornering and this together with my use of the paddles, was very good on the hills.

There’s also a snow mode which I’m told is also fine for deep gravel and rocks.

You can also lock up the front and rear axles to make full use of the limited slip diff.

FINALE With its great styling, high levels of standard gear, pricing and ability to provide a satisfying drive, this compact, family-friendly high rider is well set up to make its mark in the ever-expanding SUV/crossover class.

exus is continuing to widen its high performance portfolio with the launch of the V8 powered GS F, the first GS mid-sized sedan to wear the F badging.

It joins the RC F coupe which is powered by the same, 351 kW 5.0-litre V8 engine under the bonnet for those who appreciate the unique sound of the naturally aspirated V8.

Members are encouraged to enter shows at Mayfield, Methven, our own and Canterbury in November. Pauline had us all thinking with a quiz on parts of the spinning wheel which was really enjoyed. Richard Ashford was welcomed and gave us a talk and demonstration on the maintenance of our spinning wheels – we all watched while he repaired and adjusted some.

New equipment for wheels and looms displayed. Pauline thanked Richard and gave him a gift. Richard told us of a young Russian woman coming to Ashfords to take a workshop class on February 27 on making a wrap from wool, silk, felted – he showed us her beautiful work. Contact Ashford’s shop.

On February 13 the In House drawn mixed triples competition for the Ron White cup was held. A very successful day with a full green of club players enjoying the day. Bruce and Noeline provided a delicious afternoon tea to finish a great day. Thanks to all.

Grey Power Ashburton On Monday February 15 President Jim Burgess welcomed 40 – 50 members to the monthly general meeting at the Seniors Centre. Apologies were accepted from Elizabeth Davies and Ann Gamblin.

Jim announced that we would be taking part in the Positive Aging Expo being held at the Racecourse on the 3rd of March; a local newsletter is being collated on Friday morning, helpers welcome; the speaker for March has been changed.

Lions Club of Hinds & Districts The New Year was kicked off on Tuesday evening at the Hinds Hall when 42 members welcomed three guests from Mayfield Lions to listen to an entertaining talk from recently retired Police Officer Pup Chamberlain.

Pup passed around photos and items of interest as he related some of his more memorable experiences. He was thanked by Lion Bruce Kell before staying to enjoy the remainder of the evening. The Ladies from the Hinds Swimming Pool Committee served a delicious three-course meal and were densation from windows. Mid Canterbury Ladies Probus Club President Avis Kingsland presided over the Mid Canterbury Ladies Probus Club February meeting. After the National anthem was sung, birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated and a visitor from Auckland was welcomed. Member stood for a minute’s silence for the passing of two members – Viv O’Connor and Bev Sclater. Gwen Clucas gave a report on a meeting she had attended in Nelson.

Trip Convener Bernie Tutty reminded members of the trip to Panthers Rock Bar and a café demonstration by Chantelle on March 23. New committee members are required for the 2016 committee. The mini speaker was Nicky Horrell.

The February bus trip to Central Plains Water Scheme was unfortunately postponed, but Lion Willy confirmed it was now booked for March 22. Raffles were drawn before president David Keeley called for reports from membership, visits, welfare and youth directors.

Treasurer John Shearer presented his financial report for the month and secery, wedding supplies and gifts.

After morning tea and the raffles had been drawn, Val Farr introduced the main speaker, Roger Farr, Manager of the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. He was involved with the Operatic Society who purchased the cinema, but repairs and maintenance were not viable. A Trust was formed to look into the feasibility of the new Centre.

They had to think about what was needed, what groups would use it, was 500 seats going to be big enough? It was decided that was big enough and now there is 75-80% attendance. The fund raising was huge and two town houses were auctioned, the costs sky rocketed but the community responded well. The Centre is now considered to be an excellent multi purpose venue.

Roger was Ashburton born and bred, his family have been involved with theatre for many years. He particularly enjoys being involved with lighting. A lot of funding raising had to be done, but now many international stars come to the Centre.

It is good for singing, the Royal Ballet and has excellent acoustics. His own two children have performed there. The Big Little Theatre Co has productions,that are well worth attending.

Pigeons have been a problem on the roof, ways are being found to control them. Jennifer Beach thanked Roger for his talk.

President Avis closed the meeting with the Thought for the Day – “Coming together is the beginning, keeping together is the progress, working together is the success.”

retary Graeme Hathaway advised that an article on the Club’s Longbeach Coastal Challenge Bike Race had recently been published in the Lions Sth Pacific Magazine.

Items of general business were quickly dealt with allowing Lion Tamer Peter Lowe to start 2016 off by imposing fines on some members for often unspecified actions. An enjoyable social time followed before president David called the meeting closed with thanks to the speaker, guests, caterers and members for another great meeting.

Mid Canterbury Men’s Probus President Allan welcomed a full attendance of members to our first meeting of 2016.

Our mini-speaker was Bruce McLauchlan with a family history beginning with his Great Grandfather who emigrated from Perthshire, Scotland in 1855.

He farmed numerous properties in Canterbury and in 1875 was the first settler in Ruapuna on 683 acres. In 1934 Bruces Grandfather set up a cartage business on the Main road in Tinwald which was amalgamated in about 1940 to form Mid Canterbury Transport.

Bruce took up an apprenticeship with Horrell and Co in 1954 and went on to establish his own engineering business at Ruapuna.

He eventually worked with C P Campbell on a wide range of work including safety cabs, ski lift chairs and towers and the Queenstown Gondola.

Bruce retired in 1996 and has travelled widely since.

Our main speaker introduced by Rex Whiting was Alison Early who gave us an illustrated talk on her experience as a teacher on Falkland Islands in 1990.

Her work involved home teaching to children of four rural families in remote areas of the Island with whom she would live and teach for two week spells. Travel was by 4 wheel drive through rugged country still raw from the Falklands war eight years earlier.

Peat fires were the main source of fuel supplemented by kerosene or diesel generators. Barrie Quantock thanked Alison for her interesting talk.

In brief Rousey suicidal It was supposed to be buffalo wings and cider, but instead former UFC champ Ronda Rousey found herself contemplating suicide after being knocked out cold by Holly Holm at UFC 193 in Melbourne.

The 29-year-old revealed the November loss she suffered via head kick led to dark thoughts in the immediate aftermath. “I was literally sitting there and thinking about killing myself,” a candid Rousey told talk show host Ellen DeGeneres on her programme.

“That exact second I’m like `I’m nothing, what do I do anymore, and no one gives a s**t about me anymore without this’.”

A revamp of Collegiate Squash Club’s courts is well under way and expected to be complete in the next three weeks.

Work began on Waitangi weekend with club members pitching in, and club cap-

tain Logan Ford (above) is pleased with the progress.

“We need to lightly sand the floors and re-tape the courts, we had about 10-15 people arrive a couple of weekends ago, so it saves on the cost,” he said.

Ford said the new look is more tradi-

tional, with white replacing the previous colour of the courts.

“It needed it for a while, I think it’s about 30 years since it’s last been done, they were all different colours as well, so it’s a more traditional look now,” he said.

Hansen: Can’t talk about it

BY WYNNE GRAY All Blacks coach Steve Hansen brought his defensive A-game to the interview table yesterday as curiosity grows about Wayne Smith signing on for another stint.

Anyone looking for a juicy soundbite from Hansen will be disappointed but the absence of any denial about Smith will pique speculation that New Zealand Rugby are trying to stitch up a suitable deal with the former assistant.

Smith, who was integral to the All Blacks’ successive World Cup victories in 2011 and 2015 and also helped the Chiefs win two Super Rugby titles, has been linked with Harlequins and said recently he was considering his options.

The All Blacks will be a mix of old and new players this season.

One of the main areas for consideration will be who takes over at first five-eighths following the departures of Daniel Carter and Colin Slade.

As pessimism rises about the merits of the upcoming Super Rugby competition, Hansen

urged caution about any premature judgments. The uneven draw, extensive travel schedule and lopsided talent in the conferences has drawn widespread doubt about the virtues of the expanded 18-team series.

“They have made some pretty brave decisions in how it will be run and how they want it to work,” Hansen said. “So rather than bag it or applaud it, we need to sit back and see if it works.”

He acknowledged the arduous travel schedule, with the introduction of teams from Argentina and Japan and an extra side in South Africa, but also pointed out that test players had had a decent break after the World Cup and squads had been involved in a long buildup towards the new series.

Hansen thought All Blacks would be prominent early and hoped injuries would be kept to a minimum.

The doubles was tighter, and after a first set tiebreak, Jury and Feutz won the second set 4-2, to give their team a 3-0 win.

taking on Tony Brosnahan, and Connor Brosnahan playing Koji Kawamata.

Tony got off to a fine start, beating Mitchell in straight sets, while Kawamata eventually succumbed to Connor in three sets, making the scores 1-1.

In the deciding doubles, ConAid started better, taking the first set comfortably 4-1.

The TB Team then tightened up their returns, and took the second set 4-2.

Mannering opts out Warriors captain Simon Mannering has cited an unhappy 2015 season as the catalyst that led to him standing down from his post on yesterday, with Ryan Hoffman taking over. Bracewell out New Zealand seamer Doug Bracewell has pulled out of the squad ahead of the second test against Australia, starting in Christchurch on Saturday.

Bracewell has been troubled by a right shoulder injury, on which he had a scan in Wellington. “Doug has been a consistent performer for us this summer and put a lot of work into his game, so to miss out on the final test against Australia is very disappointing for him and us,” said coach Mike Hesson. “He’ll be given time to recover and we’ll work with him.”

Toss crucial in Chch test Brendon McCullum has always been a gambler but his streak of toss losses highlights how risky a potent pitch could be in the New Zealand captain’s swansong.

NZ coach Mike Hesson all but publicly requested a green monster for the second trans-Tasman Test, which starts in Christchurch on Saturday.

The upside for the hosts is the prospect of exposing Australia’s problems playing the moving ball, as England did last year so successfully at Edgbaston and Trent Bridge.

The downside is it’s a 50-50 call.

McCullum has won just three of his 11 past tosses in Tests.

Across all formats NZ have won eight of their past 32 tosses.

It’s a gambler’s fallacy to predict what comes next.

But if the coin falls the wrong way the hosts will be under immense pressure, as was the case in Wellington where a collapse of 5-34 followed Steve Smith’s correct call.

Mitch Marsh is confident Australia can triumph no matter what the surface is or whether they’re sent in.

“It doesn’t really bother me that much (if they want a green pitch),” Marsh said.

“As an allrounder you get a chance to have a crack at both batting and bowling.

“It might be a bit greener ... I certainly think we can (survive if sent in).

“We go into every Test match

expecting to win.”

Marsh conceded winning the toss was “really important” in Wellington.

“But in saying that we still have to put the ball in the right areas and I thought over the whole Test ... we played the conditions really well,” he added.

Australia will reclaim the No.1 Test ranking with a win or draw at Hagley Oval but barring an unexpected downfall of biblical proportions a result seems almost certain.

NZ swing king Trent Boult noted seam movement wasn’t the only way his attack could put Australia under the pump.

“I’ve only played one Test there but it definitely swung around nicely,” Boult said.

“As a bowler I’d love to see it a lot greener (compared to Wellington).

“It’s going to be interesting to see what we get down there but I’m sure it will have a tinge of green.”

Both sides are likely to feature new-look pace attacks.

NZ’s Doug Bracewell will miss the clash because of a shoulder injury, with Neil Wagner or Matt Henry to play in his absence.

Peter Siddle suffered back spasms at the Basin Reserve and is in doubt for the tour finale.

Siddle will aim to prove his fitness today, with James Pattinson out to do the same after he was dropped because of a lack of match fitness.

Former Black Caps bowling coach Shane Jurgensen will resume the same role for the upcoming World Twenty20 in India and tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa later this year.

New Zealand Cricket announced the appointment yesterday, with Jurgensen replacing current bowling coach Dimitri Mascarenhas, who will finish with the team at the end of the home summer.

role from 2008-2010, is a former first-class player in Australia and has been both the bowling coach and head coach for the Bangladesh national side. The 39-yearold is currently the coach of the Fiji national team, and has obtained a leave of absence to fulfil the role with the Black Caps.

The Wellington Sevens are at crisis point with strong suggestions the city is on the verge of pulling out its half million dollar funding for each tournament.

It is understood that the Wellington City Council is close to scrapping its financial support, which the NZ Herald has been told is $500,000 per year, money which comes from a downtown levy on businesses used to promote the city.

Once a jewel in rugby’s crown, the sevens has fallen on hard times. And New Zealand Rugby boss Steve Tew sounded like a man publicly buying time when

RadioSport’s Martin Devlin questioned him over the claim of a council funding pullout, made by a reliable source.

The news comes as the Wellington City Council considers a new $250,000 sponsorship of Wellington’s NPC team, and rumours swirl that the council will quit its long term backing of the Saints national league basketball club. Tew told Devlin: “I’m not sure where your whispers are coming from.”

“We are sitting down with the council and stadium and partners doing a very thorough review of the event. It worked very well (this year) although we didn’t get enough people there.

“A lot of things we tried to change worked. We think they are worth further exploration before we rush into any decision.

“We have a very longstanding partnership with the Wellington City Council. We aren’t rushing into anything and we don’t think they are.

“We need to move as quickly as we can and World Rugby also have a say in this. We’ll keep you informed, and do it louder than a whisper.”

Dammed by a faint retort, perhaps. Among those who believe the event is in serious trouble is the former Wellington city councillor and New Zealand cricketer John Morrison.

‘Rough diamond’ ready for action

The repetitive patter of gloves hitting mitts and bags from the modest Ashburton Boxing Club gym rings out at the Celtic rugby grounds on Tuesday evenings, as coaches Roydon and Jon Leath put their pugilists through their paces.

Last year the brothers ended a wait of more than three decades for a local national champion, when their fighter Cornelius Grobler out-classed Richard Robinson in the 69kg final in Invercargill.

The feat was last achieved by their father, Les, who coached Keith Jemmett to the 39kg junior national title in 1981, but Roydon is confident that the club has another champion-elect in their midst.

Mel McGlynn already has a South Island Novice and Canterbury title to her name, and is now gunning for national glory.

The 30-year-old tore her rotator cuff in 2014 during pad work, which kept her out of the ring for almost a year, and Roydon is now refining her aggressive style as the pair begin their quest for another

national title.

“She’s gone back to basics, when she fought for us before the Canterbury Champs last year we described her as a rough diamond, she had a lot of ability, a lot of heart and very tough,” said Leath.

“So she’s done a lot of hard work, and now I classify her as a top-grade boxer, not a fighter, she’s a boxer.”

With less mobility in her right shoulder, Roydon has helped the orthodox boxer to utilise her jab, rather than relying on power shots, and remain calm in the ring.

“That’s been part of the technique change, getting her away from using her right hand in a hooking scenario, straights – no problem,” he said.

“We tell all our folks that if you’ve got a really good jab, then you can go a long way, you’ve got to do it off the left hand.”

McGlynn, who fights in the under-64kg weight class, will next be in action at the South Island Novice Champs in a month’s time, before turning her attention to the National Championships in July.

ponents plenty of problems, while sustaining less damage behind an accurate, well-timed jab.

And following last year’s success, not many would bet against another national title finding its way to the small gym tucked away in the corner of the Celtic grounds.

“We’re aiming for a national title, last year’s was only the first one,” he said.

“Has she got the ability? Absolutely yes. Can she do it? Yes. It all depends on the day, but, I’ve got no doubts about her ability, she’s got all the shots, all the moves and all the fitness in the world.”
