Water restrictions bite BY MICHELLE NELSON

MICHELLE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Water restrictions are biting hard on some Mid Canterbury irrigation schemes, in what is being described as the worst drought in a decade. On Sunday the Rangitata River, which supplies water to the Mayfield-Hinds, Valetta and Ashburton Lyndhurst (ALIL) irrigation schemes via the Rangitata Diversion Race, was operating on 15 per cent restrictions. Yesterday river flows had

dropped to 60 cumecs, resulting in 30 per cent restrictions on available water, and today flows are expected to drop below 50 cumecs, triggering 40 per cent restrictions. “These are difficult times,” ALIL manager Jess Dargue said. The ALIL draws 85 per cent of its water take from the Rangitata, and the other 15 per cent from the Ashburton – which is currently on full restrictions. Mr Dargue said it was not unusual to hit these levels, but not

this early in the season. “We normally go on to restrictions like these in late February or early March on the Rangitata – this is the first time we’ve had to deal with it from early January. We’ve had a double whammy – a combination of lower snow falls through winter, with a long extended dry period – we certainly haven’t had a long dry period like this for many years. “We are through the critical time in terms of harvesting cereal crops, but farmers are now

wanting to get winter feed crops in. “It’s been pretty hard on some of our farmers, we haven’t seen anything like this for at least 10 years. “We have a lot more efficient methods of irrigation now, but we haven’t been under this sort of pressure for a long time. However, he said ALIL shareholders appreciated they were better off than many people in other areas, which have had much heavier cuts, much earlier.

Rangitata Diversion Race operations manager Neill Steven said the countryside was the driest he’d seen it since 2003. “We would expect the Rangitata to start dropping away from now on, and the reality is we probably won’t get any more water from the Ashburton for the rest of the season,” he said. “The difference is it’s been a very dry year.”
