Mid Canterbury schools will be among the first in the country to participate in a controversial Government education programme. The Ministry of Education

has confirmed six schools from the district will form a cluster under the Government’s flagship educational policy, Investing in Educational Success. However, schools are still in the dark about details of how the scheme will be rolled out

in the area. The $359 million programme will see schools grouped into “communities”, with high-performing teachers and principals being paid more to lift student achievement across those groups. The Ministry of Education

confirmed Mount Hutt College, Methven School, Mount Somers Springburn School, Lauriston School, Mayfield School and Our Lady of the Snows School will form the first cluster in Mid Canterbury and more could be joining them.

Arrest for ATS burglary By Erin TaskEr

Police have made a breakthrough following a spate of commercial burglaries in Ashburton, arresting an Ashburton man in relation to one of the break-ins. The 27-year-old man was arrested in relation to the burglary at the Ashburton Trading Society’s (ATS) Ashburton store last week, in which an estimated $3000 worth of clothing was taken. The man was arrested after

search warrants were executed at Ashburton addresses about 4.30pm on Tuesday. Police investigations and information provided by the community led to the searches, which also saw some of the property stolen from ATS recovered. Other items were also recovered after being found by members of the public. The ATS burglary was the first in a string of attacks on local businesses. It occurred about 12.45am on Friday. An alarm was activated and

an offender was located inside the shop by a security guard as police were arriving. They gave chase but were given the slip in the Cox Street/Cass Street area. At the time it was believed two people may have been involved in the burglary but at this stage only one arrest has been made. Police have been unable to confirm whether they believed the ATS burglary, and those at three other local businesses in the following days, were linked.

The other burglaries included Lizzie’s Dairy in Tinwald and Goods 2 U on East Street, both hit at the weekend. The latest was at Sunny’s Discount Dairy on Alford Forest Road, in the early hours of Tuesday morning. While some of the property taken in the ATS burglary had been recovered, some remained outstanding and police believed it may have already been onsold. That property included Norsewear and Swanndri jackets and clothing.

Lunch a special thank you to loyal customers Christmas came early at the Ashburton RSA yesterday when Leanne Calles and her staff turned on a bumper Christmas dinner. Ms Calles leases the RSA restaurant and says her Christmas lunch, this year catering for more than 100, is her way of thanking her loyal customers, who paid a budget price for a top shelf meal. ‘It’s my appreciation dinner for my customers. We get the same ones coming in here every week,” she said. For her providing evening meals three nights a week and lunch once a week is a service as much as it’s a business. “Most of my customers come in two or three times a week for a meal or a takeaway. I love doing this and it helps to have great staff working with me.” Christmas lunch this year included hot ham, lashings of vegetables and salads and a dessert trolley that included plum pudding and brandy custard, trifle, cheesecake, fruit salad and a jelly whip. Lay-offs possible at preschool By Daisy HuDson

Three Ashburton preschool teachers are facing redundancy just one week before Christmas, after restructuring at a local childcare centre. Staff at the Ashburton Baptist Preschool were informed of the decision on Monday, after a lengthy review of the preschool’s operations. The Ashburton Baptist Church Community Trust Board, which operates the preschool, undertook the comprehensive review after the preschool was found to be running at a significant deficit for the financial year ending December 31, 2013. As a result of the review, the preschool underwent restructuring that has led to three redundancies and 13 staff having to reapply for positions. One of the three staff members, who the Guardian understands were all long-servers, made the decision not to go through the restructuring process. Ashburton Baptist Preschool Board of Trustees member Kieran O’Hagan told the Guardian yesterday that teachers had to reapply for existing positions, and could also apply for new roles. “For those that were successful, it was a positive, reaffirming experience,” he said. Mr O’Hagan would not confirm or deny if any of the remaining staff had received a pay cut. “They’ll be paid according to their new roles,” he said. “The positive thing is that there will be pay increases.” Mr O’Hagan said the restructuring was a “difficult situation”. “We ran a deficit and you just can’t do it, you’ll go broke,” he said.

Two more on drug charges Two more people charged in relation to a police drug sting codenamed Operation Webster appeared in the Ashburton District Court this week. Russell Gordon Brown, 35, of Allenton, was sentenced to six months’ community detention, 250 hours of community work and ordered to make reparations of $75 on nine charges of relating to the sale and supply of cannabis. Two of the charges were jointly laid with Pauline Wanhalla and Isabel Christina Nancy Nicole Easton, who are

awaiting sentencing. All three lived at the same address, and were busted by an undercover officer posing as a cannabis customer. Crown prosecutor Andrew McRae told the court the address was an “active tinnie house” selling street-packaged cannabis. When arrested, Brown admitted selling about six tinnies a week. “This was not a situation of selling small amounts to friends – this was a complete stranger who came into the house to buy

cannabis over the period of four months,” Mr McRae said. Defence lawyer Paul Bradford likened Brown’s offending to that of an “off-course substitute”, in that he was a boarder who sold tinnies for the main offender (Wanhalla) when she was unavailable. In return he received cannabis for his own consumption, but did not benefit financially. Brown refused to supply a police officer working undercover on Operation Webster with larger amounts of cannabis, directing him to return when the

principal offender was home, Mr Bradford said. Judge John Strettell accepted that Brown’s involvement in operating the illicit business was less than his co-offender, but said he voluntarily participated in it. Brown will serve his sentence in Cromwell. Noeline Ellen Hurst, 52, of Tinwald, admitted three counts of selling cannabis and two of possessing cannabis for supply. She was convicted and will be back in court for sentencing on February 23.

Vehicle crashes At 5pm on Tuesday night a single vehicle crash occurred on Lagmhor Road.

Missing man found A man missing in Christchurch since Sunday, was found safe and well in Ashburton yesterday. Garnet Christopher Scoullar was found in Ashburton shortly after midday, and in a statement police and Mr Scoullar’s family thanked the public for their help in locating him. The 57-year-old was last seen on December 14 in the Hillmorton area and it was believed he may have been heading towards Dunedin or Nelson. Police were concerned for his wellbeing.

Moving on Gavin Thomas, the man whose name is found on the bottom of many of the Ashburton District Council’s documents is taking up a new position at the Christchurch City Council. Mr Thomas has spent the past eight and a half years in Ashburton, most of that time as the council’s community relations manager. His new position with the city council will be as a policy analyst.

Ashburton College’s principal is “shocked” after learning a disgraced former teacher had contacted a student he had previously formed an inappropriate relationship with. Former Ashburton College teacher Michael Burrell-Smith had his teaching registration cancelled and was found to have committed serious misconduct after forming inappropriate relationships with three students. It was reported this week that Mr Burrell-Smith, who, according to his Facebook profile, now lives in Canada, had contacted one of the complainants via Facebook messages. Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan said he was ‘shocked and dismayed’ at the revelation. “I’m simply stunned that Mr Burrell-Smith hasn’t learned his lesson,” he said. The college did not apply to have its name suppressed, as the Guardian understands doing so could have led to Mr BurrellSmith also remaining anonymous. “It reinforces, for me, the reason why name suppression was never an option,” Mr McMillan said. The Guardian revealed this week that Mr Burrell-Smith, 25, had been deregistered, censured and ordered to pay more than $3000 in costs after he was found to have committed serious misconduct by the New Zealand Teachers’ Disciplinary Tribunal. The serious misconduct included exchanging intimate text messages and phone calls with students, writing notes to a student with lists of romantic songs and drawings, and telling a student he wanted to hug her.

Terrible year for Christmas lilies By Caitlin Porter

The sweet smell of Christmas lilies is a scent treasured by many at this time of year. Unfortunately, this year’s lily crop has been far from perfect for one Mid Canterbury grower. Helen Hargreaves said so far the season had been “terrible”. And the reason for the miserly harvest – the weather. The winter was not cold enough for the bulbs, the frost took the heads off many lilies and then there was the hail damage, Mrs Hargreaves said. Other factors, such as bot-

rytis – a fungus caused by humidity that resulted in the lilies developing spots – also played a part. She said she is aware of other lily growers in the same situation. This year the weather caused the picking of the lilies to be delayed. Normally it began in the first week of December but this year, it has only just started, she said. So far Mrs Hargreaves has picked around a hundred bunches, and if the weather remained warm she would finish picking on Sunday – hopefully getting around another

hundred. Usually the yield is in the thousands. A few of the bunches that were picked had been moved to the chiller, in the hopes the pods would continue to grow. Five years ago, Mrs Hargreaves said, the chiller was packed full. All hope is not lost though. Mrs Hargreaves said she is “over being sad about it” and advised people to get their orders for lilies in early or they would miss out. Even though the lilies have yet to bloom, it was still a good time to buy as they would most certainly open before Christmas, she said.

Murder charge The Australian accused of murdering Napier man Campbell Paterson, dismembering his body and stuffing it in a chilly bin will next appear before the courts next year. Cairns local David Leslie Hickson, 32, is charged with the murder of the New Zealander and interference of a corpse. The matter appeared before the Cairns Magistrates Court yesterday and was adjourned until March 18 next year, with Hickson remanded in custody. On November 20 this year, Mr Paterson’s body was found in a chilly bin in rural Far North Queensland. - NZME

Forest and Bird Ashburton is urging anyone spotting a disturbance to the town’s blackbilled gull colony to phone Masterguard security. Chairperson Edith Smith has snubbed the Department of Conservation (DOC) in giving the recommendation, as

the department has previously recommended people phone its hotline. “Nobody does anything about it,” Mrs Smith said of calls going through the hotline. She clarified that calls to the hotline would no doubt be dealt with, but it was not an immediate response. Forest and Bird is employ-

ing a security firm to monitor the birds in the wake of some disturbances this season, and serious disturbances in the past including people driving into the colony and vandals killing chicks. The value of having a locally based security guard was they could respond immediately, and they were accessible by phone

24/7, Mrs Smith said. They would continue to be accessible over the Christmas and New Year period. The phone number is 3077199. DOC yesterday confirmed it wants members of the public to phone its hotline 0800 DOC HOT or 0800 362 468 if they witness anyone disturbing the

colony. Conservation services manager Dave Winterburn said the hotline was the official channel to report concerns about wildlife which was injured or being harrassed. “DOC will dispatch specially trained staff to respond as soon as is possible,” Mr Winterburn said from the department’s Geraldine office.

More resources needed for gulls Having a security guard monitor critically endangered gulls nesting on the Ashburton River near State Highway One is like a “plaster on a cut artery”. So says Christchurch ornithologist Peter Langlands, who believes Environment Canterbury should employ two full-time rangers to look after declining populations of black-billed gulls throughout the region. “The numbers of these gulls are just crashing like stones,” Mr Langlands said.

He applauded the efforts of Forest and Bird Ashburton which was paying security firm Masterguard to keep an eye on the colony. But full-time rangers could monitor and manage populations Canterbury-wide throughout the breeding season. Forest and Bird chairperson Edith Smith said she agreed having a security guard keeping an eye on the birds as part of his daily duties was not enough. She would also like to see a des-

ignated role created at ECan to oversee the breeding of all braided river birds in the region each year. ECan director of resource management Kim Drummond said there were “some discussions” under way on employing skilled staff to monitor and manage black-billed gull populations across Canterbury. In the meantime a number of steps had been taken to bolster protection and enhance the gulls’ habitat.

The first and what could be the final step in signing off a deal for Ashburton’s newest supermarket was taken at a resource consent hearing in Ashburton on Monday. Progressive Enterprises Ltd plans to build a $20 million supermarket on a site it owns on the corner of South and East streets. It unveiled its plans in November, applied for resource consent and lodged a notice of requirement (NOR) to alter an existing roading designation at

the South and East street intersection. Three submissions were lodged, all around parking and the proposed intersection changes, however, between the closing of submissions and yesterday’s hearing transport planning experts for Progressive Enterprises, the New Zealand Transport Agency and the Ashburton District Council have met and prepared a joint statement around traffic issues. The major issue identified was the northbound approach to the intersection of East

Street with South Street, particularly the length of queues that could form once traffic signals were installed. The experts agreed that two northbound through lanes would be needed; one lane only could lead to peak hour traffic queues that could extend onto the Ashburton River Bridge. The experts were concerned that queues could heighten accident risks that could see the bridge closed and the highway blocked. Reduced queues with two through lanes would support the resiliency of the bridge.

The complicating factor is that the existing highway is not wide enough to accommodate the additional lane as well as a turning lane, cycleways and road shoulders. Commissioner Charles Manning heard presentations on both the land use consent application and the roading designation. He will deliver a decision on the resource consent and will make a recommendation on the land designation which will be presented to the Ashburton District Council in the new year.

Les and Pauline Cornwall are proof that true love really can last, and this week the couple celebrated 70 years together. Many people, including Prime Minister John Key, Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew – and even the Queen – have acknowledged the special platinum anniversary, with cards and gifts. “I was warmed by it,” Mrs Cornwall said. The pair officially celebrated the occasion on Sunday, with family and friends at the Tinwald Plains Museum. At the time of their marriage in 1944, Mrs Cornwall was working at the Ashburton Hospital as a secretary to the Medical Superintendant. Thankfully he granted her leave to be married, which was unusual during the war period, she said. The two were wed at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, however it was somewhat of a bittersweet affair. Mrs Cornwall’s father was very ill at the time, and died 11 days later. She credits him, partly for her marriage and meeting her husband, as originally she was

International superstar Katy Perry was rumoured to be taking a break from her world tour in Queenstown yesterday. Perry is playing at Auckland’s Vector Arena tomorrow and Saturday, giving her a few days to unwind after her last concert in Brisbane on Monday. One local, who goes by the name of Yasmin on Twitter, tweeted a sighting saying: “Shut the front door! I did not just see you in Queenstown, did I?” The rumoured visit to Queenstown comes after Pure New Zealand on Twitter earlier this year said Perry was asking for suggestions on what to do during her visit to New Zealand. - NZME

Passport charges A Wanganui man has been charged with helping murderer and child molester Phillip Smith flee New Zealand. Castlecliff man Christopher Ryan Clifton, 25, was charged on December 9 under the Passports Act with making false representations. Clifton appeared in Whanganui District Court yesterday accused of making “an oral statement that he knew to be false” on June 26 last year which allegedly helped Smith to get a passport. The statement was that Smith – who was cited on the charging document under his birth name Phillip John Traynor – lived at a Palmerston North address. - NZME

Off-road deaths report A report is calling for tighter controls on children operating off-road vehicles following the deaths of 22 children at the controls since 2002. The Child and Youth Mortality Review Committee’s latest report studied the deaths of 33 children aged up to 15 in motorcycle, quad bike or motorised agricultural vehicle accidents between 2002 and 2012. Yesterday signalled the final day of the year for many Mid Canterbury schools, but for teachers the hard work is not quite over yet. Hampstead School pupils, staff and family marked the end of the school year with a fun day yesterday. However for staff, it was simply a break before getting stuck back into work. Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said the day was a lovely way to end the year. “We had the whole school out there playing games, it was the perfect day for it,” he said. “We were joined by a horde of parents and supporters and ex-students, it was really lovely to see their support.”

The year has been a busy one for schools, with booming school rolls and decile reviews challenging educators. However, for Mr Melrose, it was just another year. “It’s always a busy year,” he said. “People are now doing the other bits and pieces and getting ready for the break.” Next year is set to continue the school’s busy trend, with a large number of exciting changes and developments on the way. “We’ve got two new staff coming on board, we’ve got building work planned, and some property stuff happening over the Christmas break,” Mr Melrose said. For the pupils at Hampstead School however, the changes are at the other end of a sunny summer break.

Gully traps not up to scratch Almost half of the gully traps around Tinwald homes may not meet New Zealand Building Act standards. As part of an assessment of Ashburton’s stormwater system, the Ashburton District Council is checking every gully trap on every property to identify those that do not meet standards and allow stormwater into the wastewater system. The project, dubbed Right Pipe is now five weeks in and is likely to run for two years. It involves inspecting the drainage system of all residential properties in urban Ashburton to ensure stormwater run off is draining into the correct pipe network. During heavy rain, if gully traps are too low, stormwater goes into the wrong pipes, council asset’s manager Rob Guthrie said. “It is vital that we keep stormwater and sewerage networks functioning as two separate systems,” he said. The minimum requirement is for a gully trap to be 100mm above an unpaved area and 25mm above a paved area. “We recommend you check the height of your gully traps and if they’re not the minimum required, get them raised.” Mr Guthrie said.

The council was confident the remedial work on incorrectly constructed drainage systems would result in improvements over time, but it might not completely solve the problem of stormwater entering the sewerage network during heavy rain, he said. Alongside the gully trap checks, the council’s ongoing sewerage network assessment will continue, with a focus on identifying those pipes in the poorest condition that allow groundwater to enter the network and replacing those pipes through the renewal programme. “Taking this two-pronged approach to the issue will give us the best result in terms of reducing water entering the sewerage network during rain events,” Mr Guthrie said. Prior to inspection, the council will notify property owners of the scheduled date and time of the inspection. A post inspection followup will provide owners with results and will include information on any work needed to bring the traps up to standard. he dedication of too many people has been overlooked in the furore that has dogged the development of the district’s new cultural centre. Those working at and fundraising for the Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre have been caught in the crossfire of controversy about the costly building. It would be no surprise if their morale was low and if their final push for funding and community support seems an increasingly difficult, thankless task. After all, as they ready to open what many of us hope will become an important part of the district’s cultural life, the news about the council-led building project is less-than-rosy. News of an ad hoc management process, of successive and avoidable cost overruns and of the council’s dispute with facility neighbours has drowned out the quiet hum of many people getting down to business. It is a shame this has happened. These people have as their mission to safeguard our collective cultural heritage and to enrich the lives of we who live here. The controversies are not of their making and their resolution is outside their control. But each day – regrettably and often unfairly – their work is tarred by the same brush. Local groups consistently supported the gallery and heritage centre as the political debate raged. Money was raised, help was offered and items were donated to help make the facility a true, community investment. None of this should be forgotten as the district prepares to start using a facility that is, like it or lump it, well and truly built and will be a feature of our cultural landscape for years to come. It is also worth reconsidering the increasingly personal discourse about the council’s ongoing dispute with some facility neighbours. The affected neighbours are within their rights to ask the court to decide on matters they reasonably expected to be cleared up in the facility’s resource consent and in local parking rules. This will cost ratepayers’ money but, like the facility’s tenants, the neighbours cannot become the fall-guy for council decisions.

YOUR VIEW Fundraising concert May I, through your newspaper, thank everyone who was involved in the highly successful concerts held last Friday evening to raise funds for the fit out of the new art gallery and heritage centre. Simon O’Neill’s gift was to donate his performance to us, so that almost every dollar we made will help offset the last $60,000 (approximately) we have still to raise. Along with Simon, I recognise the MSA Men’s Choir and the Phoenix Rising Choir, both under the direction of Angie Cresswell. Likewise Jared Corbett and Olivia Pike who accompanied the performers – all of these people have donated their time and significant talents to this cause. I thank Lake Chalice Wines and the MSA, who sponsored the drinks we served in the so-

As usual, however, there are many people in the background – MC and funding champion, Kevin Soster; my fundraising committee; curators and members of the art gallery, museum and family history committees, the Regent Cinema which handled all our ticketing free of charge; volunteers who supervised setup, social hour and parking functions; council staff – and, of course, the many people who attended and/or donated money to the cause. Over the past two years many individuals and organisations have contributed to our fundraising efforts with sponsorship and donations. They will be formally acknowledged in due course elsewhere, but without their support we would not be as close as we are to completing the target we set ourselves at the onset. I thank them too.

A merry band In reference to Mr Holmes’ letter (December 12) everyone has a right to their opinion – that’s fair – however, your comment about Mr Argyle and his “merry band”, frankly I disagree.

If it were not for Mr Argyle and his “merry band”, as Mr Holmes puts it, the councillors may just steam ahead adopting the attitude “we know best about what’s good for our community”. I do not believe that is the best way to gain community confidence in the people we elect to represent us. Yes, what’s done is done and there is little for the community to do but move forward and pay for the shortfall. The question remains for those councillors both in the past and present, have they really learned anything from their decisions? We need people like Mr Argyle and other groups within this community who continue to remind councillors that they cannot assume. The council enters into agreements with the community and it is up to the council and their representatives to honour these agreements. Brian Walters

What if? Little too late?

hat if Andrew Little had become Labour leader at the end of 2013 and not 14? Would we now be labouring under a new government with a very different feel about it from the one that survived all the election mud its enemies could find to chuck at it and thus rules on serenely into 2015 and beyond? Had he taken over from David Shearer, and in the year or so since, people had therefore had time to get used to his business-like, no-nonsense approach, “Complacent Key” might have had to find some other gear than merely cruise control. As it is the PM is already finding life in parliament a lot less comfortable than he had anticipated. It looks as if Labour will be giving National a good run for its dollars. Also less than happy with the outcome of the election, Messrs Peters and Norman, both of whom had designs on some sort of “balance of

This incident may not have been a genuine terrorist encounter, but had all the ruthless hallmarks of one, one quite likely to be repeated in our country before any of us are much older. We are supposed to be prepared for such an occasion but if ever anything was more easily said than done that would be it. Short of us all being armed – God forbid – there’s not much we can do. Secrecy too has been a controversial topic this year with the line between human rights and public safety becoming very blurred. Finally, a decision to send any New Zealand military personnel to Aghanistan seems flawed, at the very least. That’s about it for 2015; it has been a hard and tragic year for too many, but there’s always the next and we can wish ourselves well for it. Search to continue The search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 will continue uninterrupted during the Christmas and New Year period. The Joint Agency Co-ordination Centre had confirmed that investigators could finish scouring the priority zone of the Indian Ocean by May if there were no delays with vessels, equipment or weather. Pakistan mourns 141 dead Pakistan has begun three days of mourning for the 132 children and nine school staff massacred by the Taliban in the country’s deadliest ever terror attack. The 141 people were killed when insurgents stormed an army-run school in the northwestern city of Peshawar and systematically went from room to room, shooting children during an eight-hour killing spree. The attack, claimed by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as revenge for a major military offensive in the region, sparked worldwide condemnation and led the Pakistani government and military to reaffirm their determination to defeat a group that has killed thousands since 2007. Teenage survivor Shahrukh Khan, who ducked below his desk with classmates when four gunmen burst into their room,

described how he played dead after being shot in both legs, stuffing his tie into his mouth to stifle his screams. “I saw a pair of big black boots coming towards me, this guy was probably hunting for students hiding beneath the benches,” the 16-year-old said from the trauma ward of the city’s Lady Reading Hospital. “The man with big boots kept on looking for students and pumping bullets into their bodies. FMA won’t move on SCF BY HAMISH FLETCHER New Zealand’s market watchdog has confirmed it won’t take any action following an inquiry into South Canterbury Finance. However, the Financial Markets Authority noted yesterday that Crown Asset Management had launched action against South Canterbury Finance directors for “failing to comply with their duties”. Crown Asset Management, which was formed in 2012 to acquire assets of some failed finance companies whose investors were paid out under the Government’s retail deposit guarantee scheme, declined this week to name the directors it is targeting. It confirmed that statements of claim and defence had been filed in the High Court at Christchurch. The FMA lined up to support

the Serious Fraud Office when it laid charges against five men associated with the failed Timaru firm in December 2011. That case saw only one man – director Edward Sullivan – found guilty. He was sentenced last week to 12 months’ home detention. When the SFO laid charges in December 2011, then-FMA chief executive Sean Hughes said it was examining avenues to take civil proceedings to recover some of the money paid to SCF investors under the Crown retail deposit guarantee scheme. While the watchdog’s inquiry remained live after the verdicts in the SFO case, the regulator said yesterday this was now closed and no action would be taken. FMA director of enforcement Belinda Moffat says the regulator looked into whether the fi-

nance company had met its continuous disclosure obligations, and the respective roles of the trustee and the auditor. The regulator did not find evidence that would justify the costs of taking action and recoveries for investors or the tax-

payer from any of its potential proceedings were unlikely, she said. “The FMA has made the decision to close these inquiries after very careful consideration of our responsibility to act in the best interests of the public.

This decision does not diminish in any way the losses suffered by investors, taxpayers or preference shareholders, many of whom will continue to feel the ramifications of the collapse of SCF for years to come,” Moffat said. Because of South Canterbury Finance’s participation in the retail deposit guarantee scheme, 35,000 investors were bailed out by the taxpayer to the tune of $1.6 billion when the company collapsed – of which $800 million has been recovered from other parties. While debenture and stock holders were covered by the scheme, investors who held preference shares in SCF were not covered. These shares were worth $100 million when issued in 2006, but their value had fallen to $15 million by 2010. - NZH

Rest home planning under way It is full steam ahead for the new Methven Care Trust as members begin to plan a multimillion rest home for the town. The trust is to oversee replacement of the town’s 90-year-old 13-bed Methven House with a new facility on a different site. It has been registered this month as a charity, which will allow it to seek grants for the project which has previously been estimated as costing up to $8 million. The inaugural trustees have been drawn from the Methven

and foothills communities to include representatives from farming, business and the township. Chairperson Joanne Suyker is joined by Colin Lill, Ian Totty, Ronnie Smith and Janine Holland. Norman Oakley of Oakley Gray Architects has been commissioned to produce concept drawings in the first quarter of 2015, and met with trustees on site last week. Trust members hope to begin building within three to four years, but this will

be dependent on funding. The new facility is to have 20 en-suite bedrooms, with a mix of premium and standard size rooms. Dementia care beds may be added in stage two, alongside self-contained licence-to-occupy and rental units. The new Methven House will be located on Alma Place in Camrose Estate, on land gifted by the Lochhead Family Trust. Methven Care Trust is to have its own logo, to be unveiled in a sign at the site within the next fortnight.

Sheep, beef farmers leading the change Sheep and beef farmers are stepping up to lead change in their industry, says Meat Industry Excellence (MIE) chairman John McCarthy, and must remain engaged to secure the future they want. Mr McCarthy welcomed the results of director elections at Alliance Group and in particular another high voter turnout. “Farmers have spoken, and we have always said that the future of our co-ops and the industry is in their hands. MIE has always been about giving farmers choice. “There’s clearly momentum for change and farmers need to maintain the momentum to ensure a co-operative future that is more profitable and sustainable,” Mr McCarthy said. “Congratulations to the suc-

Mr McCarthy said MIE knew the process of industry reform was a multi-year commitment and was here for the long haul. MIE would continue to endorse farmer candidates at coop elections next year as part of its push for reform.

Ashburton zone committee appoints two members Craig Fowles is the latest person to take a seat on the Ashburton zone committee, and Gordon Guthrie has been reappointed for three years. As a technical manager for ANZCO Foods Canterbury, Mr Fowles has a frontline role in the management of water and water-related issues. Mr Guthrie is general manager of Electricity Ashburton

and runs a small cattle stud with his wife Debbie on their Winchmore property. Ashburton is one of 10 water management committees set up as part of the collaborative Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS) to develop community-led recommendations to provide sustainable benefits from our water resource.

It is a joint committee comprising Environment Canterbury, the Ashburton District Council and reprentatives from Ngai Tahu Runanga. The other community members on the zone committee are Donna Field, Sheryl Stivens, Ben Curry, Jackie Wright and Chris Allen. CWMS programme manager Christina Robb said the selec-

tion process focused on finding people who could see others’ points of views and work collaboratively to find solutions for water issues. “The CWMS is an innovative approach to managing fresh water. It’s about finding the best ways to restore our environment and provide for viable farming and communities throughout the region,” she said.

our mother wouldn’t like them! Nor perhaps the lady of the house. But then maybe they would, especially so the decidedly raunchy M4 Coupe. And its not just the looks of either, but the fact that BMW say these two new M models are built to dominate the road, the track and every surface in between! All right, I didn’t get any track time, but the 700km test drive was a return trip from Auckland to Taupo, mostly via some wonderfully winding country roads. These definitely inspired spirited driving, which showed that BMW are stating the obvious! Oh yes, it was a drive experience that I reckon was akin to a decent Lotto win! For, four of us had two M3s and two M4s to to alternate between, while BMW’s Ed Finn was the navigator in the in the lead car. The four seater Coupe steals the show style-wise. However with its four doors, seating for five and larger 480 litre boot, the slightly less striking, but similar performing M3, is the more practical of the two and could easily line up as family transport. Both have aluminium bonnets and front side panels, lightweight chassis’ and carbon-fibre roofs. The M4 is slightly lower and and weighs in 23kg lighter. Then from the driver’s seats, where there’s all the usual

M signature and refinement including a much used head-up display, necessarily retentive, but comfortable heated sports seats, climate control and 16 speaker/600 watt sound system, sat-nav, they look and feel identical. This continues as you fire up the mighty 3-litre twin-turbo straight six, a sound which immediately puts a grin on your face. For there’s a full 317kW and 550Nm of torque between 1850-5500rpm. Plus it is keen to rev to 7500rpm and beyond, which means a fantastic power delivery and huge torque spread. With a response that when provoked, is so instantaneous and quick it almost takes your breath away with its almost jetlike thrust, even left in “D”. So much so that one car tester said they “feel like a wild dog that’s continuously straining against the leash”. From standstill they can scorch to 100km/h in 4.1 seconds. Drive gets to the rear wheels via a 7-speed, M double-clutch auto (with very quick acting paddles) and electronically controlled limited-slip diff. But while all this outright poke can feel dramatic, then just

as quickly it transforms in real world driving conditions to a feeling of refined eagerness, both around town and at cruise, where the previously obvious exhaust note (which I never tired of) becomes suitably subdued. The quoted fuel consumption is 8.3L/100km. We saw an average of 9.6L for our entertaining trip. With all this power on call did I feel inadequate? Not a bit behind the wheel of either of these, for they have the consummate ability to make reasonably ordinary drivers, like yours truly, feel really accomplished. The engine, transmission, steering and dynamics can be adjusted electronically to match one’s skills, right from comfort

Road and tyre noise are effectively suppressed although there’s some tyre roar on coarse chip.

What do you get when you throw together a truck driver, cleaner, zoology student and a collection of other part-time Kiwi footballers? In the case of Auckland City FC, you get a multimillion-dollar-earning, world-conquering club football team. Auckland, whose starting XI also includes a retail assistant, some junior coaches and a sports shop owner, have stunned the footballing world and earned $2.57 million in prizemoney by booking a spot in the Fifa Club World Cup semi-finals. It’s a mindboggling situation when they’re compared to Spanish giants Real Madrid, who will feature in the second semi-final in Morocco. Real Madrid contain the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, last year’s winner of the Ballon d’Or as the world’s player of the year who is estimated to take home more than $100 million in overall earnings this year, Gareth Bale, who was subject to a world record 85 million-pound ($171 million) transfer fee last year, and Iker Casillas, acknowledged as the world’s best-paid goalkeeper. Auckland’s tournament earnings still have room to grow, should they somehow topple Argentine giants San Lorenzo in today’s semi-final. A win would see the Oceania

champions double their prizemoney, effectively making their semi-final a $2.57 million, winner-take-all clash. It could also open the door for a fairytale final against European Champions Real Madrid, who face Mexico’s Cruz Azul in the other semifinal, with $6.43 million reserved for the Club World Cup champions. About 50 per cent of Auckland’s windfall will go to the franchise and the other half gets split among the ASB Premiership’s other franchises. The Auckland players are expected to pocket between 20 per cent and 30 per cent of the club’s share depending on how many games they played in qualifying and at the Club World Cup. It could be about $30,000 for some. Regardless, it’s good reward for the squad of 23, most of whom had to take extended leave from their day jobs. Southby in U19 team Mid Canterbury’s James Southby has been named in the Canterbury under 19 cricket team for the National Men’s Tournament in January. Southby, who plays for the Christ College 1st XI, has had two appearances for the Mid Canterbury senior this summer, scoring 63 against Marlborough and 43 against South Canterbury. The Canterbury under 19 team had a different selection process this year after the regional Under 19’s tournament was cancelled. Players were nominated to trial and, over the three days - a two-day match and a one-day match - the team was selected.

Cowley calls time Kiwi Olympian Sarah Cowley has called time on her competitive athletics career. The 30-year-old represented New Zealand at the 2012 London Olympics, the 2006 and 2014 Commonwealth Games, multiple World University Games and has many national titles to her name. It’s been a massive year in harness racing. We have seen champions unearthed and new talent arise along with a few others who have fallen by the wayside. Christmas brings one of the busiest racing periods of the year, but also one of the most enjoyable. But it’s also a chance to sit back and take in all that has hap-

pened in the past 12 months. So with reflection in mind, here are a few things to ponder while you stuff yourself with Christmas pud next week. Will we ever see another New Zealand Trotting Cup with so much media interest as we did this year? Is there anybody who can peg back the margin between every driver in New Zealand and Dexter Dunn? The same question as above –

but in relation to Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen? Why is it that small-time country meetings seem to attract the bigger crowds and more horses than Addington? Who will Ricky May drive in next year’s New Zealand Trotting Cup? I’ve saved one particular question for last. It’s pertinent to this time of the year and has a pretty big impact on harness racing in Mid Canterbury.

Will we ever see the Boxing Day meeting at Ashburton return to its former glory of big crowds and atmosphere? It was once a must-attend event for everyone in Ashburton and even further afield. But crowd numbers are dwindling and the club is under pressure to try and find ways to rejuvenate the day. So a plea to you good Mid Canterbury folk, if I may. Make sure you do pack up the chilly

bin and the picnic on Boxing Day next week and head to the races. You’re sure to be entertained and it’s the best possible way to sit back and relax after the Christmas Day rush. Trust me, you will enjoy it. Good luck to you all over the Christmas and New Year racing period. Hopefully you come out on the other side with fat wallets and smiling faces.

Club news www.guardianonline.co.nz Allenton Bowling Club One result this week our Ladies Club drawn fours played December 2, Jill May, Judy Smith, Jenny Mitchell and Colleen McFarlane were the victors. We had a lovely evening Saturday night attending our Christmas Dinner at the clubhouse. What a beautiful spread. Congratulations to everyone from food supply, coordinators, kitchen hands, raffles and great entertainment just a fab evening. Went to Hinds Monday, another great day had by all. A fundraiser for their local swimming pool raising $600. Wolfy had a wrong bias that went right across the rink! Not sure how much it cost him.

Ashburton Bowling Club Although it’s not the New Year yet, I would like to nominate for New Year Honours the gallant band of volunteers who tirelessly worked on reroofing half the club house: Roger Gutberlet, Murray Anderson, Gavin Eder, Brian Williams, Graham Taylor, Harold Kemp, Mike Quinn, Rodger Herriott, Winstone Lee, John Smart and Jo Ryk. A huge thank you from the clubs. The new heat pumps are installed now too and George Crack donated a delightful bird house to the club The Kiddey Cup played as Aussie pairs on Dec 6 where Charlie Leech and Leonie Spargo won, Mike Quinn and Shirley Doig second. Gavin and Margaret Eder third. Dec 12 Toyota Triples again filled two greens, the only local team to feature in the winners was Gavin Eder, Winston Lee and Dawn Bruce in second. Heartland Pairs and Fours was played the next day won by Roger, Diane, Gaynor and Mike (again) with 5 wins out of 6 games, also with 5 wins were Gavin, Margaret, Winston and Dawn coming second. George Crack donated a delightful bird house to the club, The Dorothy Cup was won by Alastair Mac Kenzie, Carl Andrew and Annette Blain narrowly from Rodger Herriott, Wally Porter and Joan Knudson (only 6 points difference) with Winston Lee, Des Prendergast and Chas Rooke place third. The Ladies Pairs Championship have been completed, Diane and Ollie were the victors and Noeline and Leonie the runners up. There will be Sat Rollover triples this weekend, weather permitting and if time, Corner to Corner.

Ashburton Club and MSA Golf Section Our final game for the year was our Christmas breakup held at the Tinwald Golf Club Dec 7. Men’s Champion Lindsay Jackson Aggregate Trophy Rodney Harris A reminder to all members the Brown Brothers Trophy is January 18 McLeans Island Golf Club. Teams of four men and four women are eligible to play. Entries close January 8. First M.S.A section game for 2015 will be played at the Ashburton Golf Club February 15 against Rangiora RSA Club.

Ashburton Golf Club A good sized field took to the course for the first round of the summer stableford and the first qualifier for the Hydraulink Shootout. Top score of the day was a great 48 points for Graham Behrnes, so he gets a head start in the summer stableford, but he is not available for the Hydraulink shootout. Rodney O’Neil tops that list with a good 41points, and at present 35 points gets you into the top 19. Just to recap, your best two scores over the five rounds count. There are still four rounds left, on the next four Saturdays. After the fifth round is completed, the top 19 scores get into the final, normally 75 or 76 points should get you in. The final takes place on Jan 25, we will also have an auction on the Saturday night, and hopefully we can get a form guide printed, if the libel lawyers allow. Just a note to our lady members, only four ladies have entered so far, and this has historically been a good tournament for

Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club The December meeting of the Pakeke Lions Club commenced with the singing of the National Anthem followed by a Grace delivered by Marion Martin. Clip boards circulated during the meal requested volunteers for the BBQ at the Boxing Day races and members wishing to visit others clubs within the District. A number of apologies were read by Graham Taylor. Ray Harraway advised that the container for storage is ready for use and will be parked at the racecourse. The annual outing for the Special Needs children from the College was well enjoyed - a visit to Lake Hood, then back to the domain for the rest of the programme. A highlight were the rides on motor bikes kindly loaned by Jeff Marshall Motor Cycles with crate and trailer loaned by ATS. A BBQ lunch, a treasure hunt and lolly scramble completed the day. Secretary Barry Bluett read letters of thanks from the Blind Foundation for the donation towards their Christmas function and from the A & P Association with thanks for the Pakeke support and service at the 2014 Show. Third VP Lion Arthur Pawsey thanked all who had supported street collections this year in which Pakeke had contributed 86 hours to various causes. Peter introduced the Samoan Choir who sang a selection of Samoan songs and Derek thanked the group and presented them with a collection of gifts. Tail Twister Milner Jacob extracted the usual fines for misdemeanours or notoriety. President Bob concluded the meeting with his thought for the month. “If there was no destitution, no loneliness, no poverty, no sickness and no wars in the world, only then would there be no need for Lions International”

College Cricket Club The Ashburton College 1st XI had its first win of the season when the boys secured an out-right victory over St Andrews seconds in Christchurch last Saturday. It was a nice way to see off the Year 13s who have contributed to the team: Tom Dudley, Jordy Scott-Wells, Deon Biggs, Ryan Hampton, Devam Pandya and Year 12 Andrew Jopson. After conceding a four-run deficit in the first innings, the boys managed 168 in their second dig with Josh Gill top scoring with an impressive 64 (including four 6s). He received good support from Gareth Hunt 22 and Jopson 20 (not out). Chasing 161 for the victory, Josh Buchanan got the college off to a good start when he bowled five maidens in his opening spell. Despite not feeling flash, Scott Punselie turned in a stellar spin performance, taking 5-41 – this followed on from his seven wickets for the Mid Canterbury 17s the day before. Biggs managed two wickets in his farewell match while the Hunt brothers Kieran (2) and Gareth (1) picked up the rest. The year 9-10 team continued its unbeaten run, with a victory over Methven-Lauriston on Saturday. College batted first, scoring 177 (Tom Ravenscroft 66 not out, Liam O’Connor 30 not out). Methven was then rolled for 61.

Hinds and Districts Lions Club On Tuesday 82 members, wives, partners and guests were present at the Hinds Hall for the Hinds and Districts Lions Club combined monthly meeting and Christmas Dinner. President Robert Ellis welcomed all, particularly the two new prospective members attending, before calling on David Keeley to introduce Sarah Moore and Ruby Wills, both talented local Highland Dancers whom the club had recently assisted to attend the 2014 Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Sarah and Ruby described their experience travelling to Edinburgh, then demonstrated one of the dances they had performed at the Tattoo before answering questions from the floor. An enjoyable meal prepared by the Hinds Playcentre followed as Tail Twisters Stu-

art Wilson and Fiona Ward fined some of those present for slight indiscretions they had noted. Raffles were drawn as dessert was enjoyed with tea or coffee, then Peter George introduced the main attraction for the evening, local musical celebrity Cameron Luxton. Cameron’s bracket of songs was well received and at the conclusion of his performance he was thanked by Colin Fleming. It was then the turn of the Hinds and Districts Lions Choir to give their rendition of some old favourite and more popular Christmas Carols. This enjoyable evening concluded with President Robert thanking all members for their contributions throughout the past year, particularly Kevin Jackson for his efforts in building the two WW1 aeroplanes used in the recent Santa Parade and he wished everyone a safe and Merry Christmas.

MSA Outdoor Bowls A short report due to the fact not much happening on the home front. Dec16 the Ladies drawn Club Fours was unfortunately postponed until early after Christmas. The Teams to play for the title are Joan Hardy(s) Shirley Taylor, Wendy Petrie, Rene Devereux versus Robyn Parkin (s) Joyce Cleghorn, Ann Burke Helen Dowdle. . The Men’s Section are getting their games played by the due dates which the Match Committee commend them for. Saturday last another round of 2/3’s was played with disappointing results. Section 1: at Kaiapoi Ray Mitchell(s) John Argyle Charlie Cleghorn lost 12—30. Sid Harrison (s) Joan Hardy, Rene Devereux kept the flag flying with a win 21—11. Section 2. at Richmond played in bitterly cold conditions, Peter Lapsly (s) Maurice Sunbeam, Trevor Nish lost 9—33, Brian Lynn(s) Joyce Cleghorn, John Withell also had a loss 14—21. Better luck next time. With Christmas on our doorstep nothing to report till after the celebrations.

RSA Women’s Section President Colleen Hands welcomed members to the Christmas dinner on Dec 8. Wynn Chapman and Anne Nicholas cut the Christmas cake. Happy Birthday was sung to several members who have birthdays in December and January. Bus trip on February 4 the list for names will be in the office from January 21 until Januray 30. $10 to be paid. The bus will leave the RSA about 9.30am. Raffles were drawn – several lovely prizes were won. Leann and staff were thanked for the wonderful food they were about to serve. Joy said Grace. After the meal we were entertained by the Electronic Organ Club. As the President put it “they were back by popular demand”. Some members showed versatility by playing either keyboard or accordion as needed. Their talents were really enjoyed. Tea, coffee and Christmas cake were served to end a lovely evening. Coleen on behalf of herself and her committee wished everyone and their families a safe and happy Christmas.

With two months to go until the Coast to Coast, 30-year-old Ashburton’s James Kay is getting ready to run, kayak and cycle his way across the South Island. Kay is set to compete in the two-day version of the great multisport race, starting on the West Coast’s Kumara Beach on

February 13 and ends at New Brighton beach the next day, to raise money for the Mid Canterbury Cancer Society and Children with Cancer UK. He is no stranger to fundraising or putting his fitness to the test, completing “a couple of marathons” in his time. He ran the New York marathon in 2008 to raise money for

Children with Cancer and did the same again at the Sydney Marathon in 2010 But this will be his maiden Coast to Coast. After moving to Mid Canterbury from England two years ago, Kay thought it was time to raise money for a local charity. He hopes to raise around $10,000 and is currently sitting

at the $5000 mark, with the end total raised to go directly to the charities. Kay said he paid for all expenses associated with the race himself, including a kayak, roof rack, road bike and race-day attire, branded with his main sponsors. Aside from raising money, which he said is his main focus,

he is focused on finishing. “It’s a big deal to do it over two days, but I like to challenge myself,” he said. Over the last few months he has stepped up his preparation and completed the Longbeach half-marathon, the Hanmer halfmarathon and the Dunedin full marathon as he gears up for the epic 243km traverse.
