No-warrant raids on farms ‘overkill’ BY TIM CRONSHAW

Farmers are uncomfortable with changes to animal movement legislation that will give ministry officials the powers to search farms without warrants. Ministry for Primary Industry officials can conduct warrantless searches of farms under an amendment bill to the National Animal Identification and Tracing (Nait) Act passed under urgency by the Government. The bill makes changes to the act which will allow for warrantless inspections aimed at nonco-operating farmers, clarifies animal movement requirements, and makes it an offence not to record animal movements. The Government made it known that it was unhappy with low compliance by farmers tracking stock movements through the Nait scheme after the mycoplasma bovis cattle disease was discovered last year. Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury dairy chairman Chris Ford said allowing raids on farms without warrants was overkill and they should not be isolating

In Minister of Agriculture Damien O’Connor’s first reading of the bill, he said the bill would ensure all animal movements could be tracked and people moving stock to unregistered locations without declaring the movements could be held to account. The bill was not about increasing powers for officers but ensuring that those already available to them could be used properly and be aligned with other legislation to help eradication efforts, he said.

Mid Canterbury’s electric vehicle numbers lagging By Sue NewmaN

Ashburton might be preparing for a growing wave of electric vehicles (EV), but that wave could be a long time coming. The Government has a target of 64,000 electric vehicles on the road by the end of 2021, but figures provided by EV advocacy group Drive Electric suggest the numbers could fall well short of that target. Registered EV numbers in the Ashburton District are low, with the Ministry of Transport’s data to July 31 showing 19 registered to Ashburton owners, three to Rakaia owners and one to a Methven owner – a total of 23. Registrations for all of Canterbury total 1175 and for all of New Zealand there are 9000 EV registrations. There are two public EV charging points in the Ashburton District, in Rakaia and Ashburton, and a third is planned for Methven. There are also several points on private property. Drive Electric chairman Mark Gilbert said the EV adoption needed to speed up and his organisation is suggesting a variation on the fringe benefit tax, Project Switch, could be the catalyst needed. This would see EVs bought by businesses for fleet use, attracting a lower value of FBT linked to the fleet’s outgoing fossil fuel model vehicles. The cost of an EV, between $50,000 and $80,000 is high com-

pared with a comparable internal combustion engine vehicle, $30,000 to $40,000, but running costs are significantly lower. As an example, Gilbert said, Meridian’s EV cost $695 per annum to run compared to between $6000 and $7000 for a traditional vehicle. When it comes to fleets making the switch, EA Networks is al-

ready moving down that track. Commercial manager Jeremy Adamson said the company had two hybrid SUVs in its fleet and, as vehicles came up for replacement, all options were considered. “We’re obviously keeping a close watch and we’ll be looking to move more into this realm, but the vehicles need to be fit for the

performance we need,” he said. Because of the service nature of EA Networks’ business and the often rugged back country terrain that was travelled, it was important the most appropriate vehicles for the job were chosen “There is no issue with EV quality and certainly the range is getting better. When a vehicle comes up for replacement we look at its

operational requirements. If it is a flat-country run-about, then it may well be that EV is the way to go,” Adamson said. The company would also look at the total cost of ownership of the vehicle and certainly that currently was weighted in favour of EVs. If petrol was priced at $2 per litre at the pump, that was equivalent to 30c for an EV, he said.

While hundreds of Ashburtonians have replaced their old logburners over the past few years, there are still some who have not and those homeowners could be faced with a tricky problem finding replacement models. Permits to replace logburners aged 15 years and over had to be lodged with the Ashburton District Council by October 31, 2017,

to ensure those replacements could be low-emission models. Permits lodged after that date could only be for the more expensive ultra-low emission burners. And for people with in-built log burners, that could create a problem, said council building services manager Michael Wong. “Currently there are no ultralow inbuilt models available in New Zealand, so for those people, I’m not quite sure what they’re

going to do,” he said. Wong said he has yet to receive a consent application that involves an inbuilt burner, but said he knows these will come. All ultra-low emission approved burners listed on ECan’s website are free standing. Homeowners replacing burners that are coming up to a 15year expiry date, can still replace these with low emission models providing their consent applica-

tion is lodged before January 1. Building consents for low emission burners will not be issued after January 2019. The drive to replace older logburners with lower emission models has been under way for several years and is led by Environment Canterbury. This is part of a requirement for air sheds to meet National Environmental Standards for air quality.

This sets a standard of no more than one pollution breach per year by 2020. This year Ashburton was allowed to have up to three breaches of the PM10 guideline of no more than 50mcg. Two have occurred, one in June, 52mcg and one in July, 54mcg. Since recordings have been taken in 2007 Ashburton’s breaches have ranged from 16, down to just one.

If there’s such a thing as reaching optimum health, Margo and Rosa Flanagan believe the path to get there is lined with fresh veges, granola and raw vegan cheesecake. Nineteen-year-old Margo credits plant-based foods for helping her beat chronic fatigue, while 22-year-old Rosa, a steeplechase athlete, says it has been the key to overcoming an eating disorder. Now the Christchurch-born Two Raw Sisters are sharing what they’ve learned about food as medicine with the people of New Zealand. The young entrepreneurs have been travelling the country delivering workshops educating people on how “easy, affordable and yummy” plant-based foods can be. They were invited to Ashburton by Kitchen Kapers’ owner Rachael Redmond, where they delivered a workshop on winter salads on Thursday night.

Margo said there’s a significant amount of satisfaction in showing people how to use ingredients in new ways and unlock its nutritional benefits, or simply demonstrating how a good dressing can totally change everything. Simply put, “we both just love helping people,” Margo said. As well as their own experiences, the girls are equipped with knowledge from a course they undertook at raw-based culinary school Plant Lab, in Los Angeles last year. Upon returning in June, they hit the ground running. With the hope of becoming chefs, they started creating and supplying food to restaurants like Christchurch’s Hello Sunday – literally from their first week back in New Zealand, Rosa said. They also began offering workshops, appearing at food shows and selling products at the Riccarton Bush market. While their vegan sweets received a huge amount of positive feedback, Margo and Rosa

quickly realised they wanted to do things a little differently. “We weren’t getting to interact with people,” Rosa said. “We didn’t want to do the manufacturing, being stuck in a factory,” Margo said. “Instead of doing lots of things at a good level, we wanted to do a few things at an outstanding level. So we decided to cut back, evaluate and see what’s most beneficial.” And that’s when they decided to pour all their passion into the workshops. Now offering classes from Dunedin to Auckland on topics including fermentation, root vegetables, raw desserts, sports nutrition, healing the gut and living on a budget, the Two Raw Sisters said every day is different. The classes range from open workshops to private events, work functions and even hens’ nights. While every class has a different vibe, the girls said they make sure to include tips and tricks which

benefit everyone, like seasonality shopping and how to create flavour combinations with similar ingredients – “instead of just buying one thing and using it once”. The girls said they see all sorts coming to their workshops, including, large numbers of people from older generations who want to branch out from the meatbased meals they’ve grown up and known for years. The age range at this week’s Kitchen Kapers’ workshop ranged into the 70s. “I think it’s good we’re doing it young, because we’re able to reach both generations,” Margo said. “It’s one of those things – family tell their friends and it reaches friends of friends.” Now, with plans to set up a workshop base in Christchurch’s Welles Street, and workshops booked across the country until Christmas, the girls are showing no sign of slowing down. “We’re in it for the long term,” Rosa said.

A Northland artist is using thousands of handmade purple hearts to create a piece of work with a powerful message about love and anti-violence. A groundswell of support for the anti-violence campaign #Justiceforeli has resulted in thousands of hearts lovingly created from people around the world delivered to Whangarei. The campaign started online with heartfelt videos from family members after the death of 18-year-old Eli Holtz, of Whangarei. The former Tikipunga High School student was a passenger in a vehicle that had stopped at a red light in central Auckland about 3.15am, in January, when he was allegedly assaulted. He was put on life support but later died. A Bulls man, 30, has been charged with manslaughter and will be tried in the High Court at Auckland in November. The family started the campaign to create safer communities for families and raise awareness of the magnitude of violence in New Zealand. Purple was Eli’s favourite colour and the heart became the symbol of the campaign. Artist Mahinaarangi Reihana-Kopa received seven boxes filled with thousands of hearts from the Holtz family. The NorthTec graduate said she had sat down with the family to get an idea of who Eli was and learn about the kaupapa – principles and ideas which act as a base or foundation for action – of the campaign. Reihana-Kopa, from Waiomio, is looking forward to creating a work that will be displayed for the public. – NZME

Heli-pad fundraiser Ashburton played a big part in the Maia Health Foundation’s drive to raise money for Christchurch Hospital’s roof-top heli-pad and the community will soon have another opportunity to boost the fundraising pool. Local woman Kate Murney was a front person for the appeal, telling how the helicopter service helped save her life and daughter Tara Newton is keen to play her part in helping raise the $400,000 that is needed to complete the heli-pad project. Newton and friend Angela Leadley have created Club Ninety Eight. It will be a spring indulgence of food and entertainment at Trotts Garden on October 13. There will be auctions and Kate will share her story, as will intensive care specialist David Bowie. Tickets are on sale now at $150 per person.

Artist’s fascination with emotion By Katie todd

A fascination with human emotion and a penchant for spontaneous flair are the driving forces behind a selection of works now on display in the Short Street Studio. France-born, Christchurchdwelling contemporary artist Florence Egasse is starring as the guest artist for the Ashburton Society of Arts’ Early Spring Show.

Along with the works of a dozen members of the society, she will be exhibiting pieces from a body of work called Undercover, along with another piece called Sweet As. A lover of language, Egasse often gives her pieces names with dual meanings, she said. For example, Undercover, while exploring our “concealed senses” and human attraction to the elements, also features low clouds

in reference to being cloaked and wrapped up. Egasse is self-taught, yet spent hours studying the composition and techniques of classic and modern artists when she was a student, working in the museums of Bayeux, Normandy. She finds inspiration in children’s drawings, the native scenes of France and New Zealand and her childhood by the sea, as well as people and interior spaces.

She said she is constantly exploring new things in her artworks and going with the flow. “I do not want to stick to what I know. I love exploring all the techniques,” she said. The Early Spring Show will open on Sunday at 10am and run until September 16. Works can be viewed on weekends from 10am to 3pm or when the sign is outside the studio at 53 Short Street.

A section of Methven Highway was closed to traffic on Thursday night for over an hour following a car crash. Two vehicles collided at around 6.50pm around 6km south of Methven, blocking the road. Emergency services established a detour along Thompsons Track and Pole Road. One person sustained minor injuries and was transported to Ashburton Hospital Emergency Department by St John. A tow truck was called for the vehicles and the road re-opened at around 8.15pm.

Sea provides inspiration for artists By Katie todd

Jacqui and Dan Shipp’s artworks might be on exhibit in the alpine community of Methven, but it’s a far cry from the studios in which they’re produced. As an underwater photographer, Dan can typically be found exploring vast Indonesian shipwrecks, hovering near the entrance of sea anemones waiting to earn the trust of its resident clownfish, or getting up close with curious grey seals. As an artist, Jacqui can typically be found crouched in the lounge amid hundreds of itty bits of magazine as she assembles a collage, or perched on the sea floor furiously sketching the school of manta rays before her in an underwater notebook. The travelling couple from the UK have just set up their first combined exhibition in the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall and said behind every piece of art on display is an interesting story. “All of the pieces are from places we’ve been, breathed the atmosphere,” Jacqui said. Dan said there was no easing into his love of underwater photography when he began around 15 years ago. “My big love was diving, and one day I just picked up a camera with the express intention of using it while diving,” he said. Since then, his subjects have included tiny crustaceans, unique species of fish and often Jacqui herself, while she is free diving. The hardest part of it is gaining the subject’s trust and managing their stress, he said – “whether it’s a fish, or Jacqui”. Referencing a photo where Jacqui is around 20 metres underwater, he said some photos can take several attempts. “As she swam up I kept visualising the perfect photo, so she’d get to the top … completely gasping for breath ... and I’d be there ready to tell her to go back down and try something else,” he said. More recently, he has found himself dabbling in macro photography on land, taking closeup botanical images and finding

Jacqui has recently gotten into diving and sketching more, but has always had a penchant for collage creations. Her work has featured around the world and even been purchased by The Natural History museum of London. Her pieces in the exhibition include famous scenes of New Zea-

land like Tekapo and Mt Cook, along with a detailed depiction of a Maori woman. “When I’m creating a collage I come up with the idea and then I look through magazines for the textures and patterns I want. It really takes on a life of its own … and that’s the good thing about collage,” she said. “Sometimes I’ll see her tear a tiny corner off the page of a magazine and think ‘what on earth is

that for’,” Dan said. “But then you see it on the page and it all makes complete sense.” The couple spend the winter months of each year in New Zealand, where Jacqui has family, and the rest of their time in Indonesia, along with the occasional visit back to friends and family in the UK. The warm waters of Indonesia give them the chance to see bright, colourful coral, while the colder

waters of New Zealand and the UK make for more moody and “edgy” scenes. “New Zealand diving is great – it’s like all the best bits of the UK, in one,” Dan said. Jacqui and Dann Shipp’s works will be on display in the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall, Methven, throughout August. The exhibition can be viewed from 9am to 5pm during the week and 10.30am to 2pm on weekends.

Kitten on road; police to the rescue An injured kitten got a police escort after causing havoc on Auckland’s Northwestern Motorway yesterday. The three-month-old male kitten lost a front leg in the mayhem and jumped in panic into a tight space above the gears underneath a police car. Police could not pull him out at the scene, so drove him to Giltrap Motors at Glenfield, where a fourman team pulled the car apart to extract the kitten and took him to the nearby Glenfield Veterinary Clinic. Veterinary nurse Angelique Macgillivray said the clinic was working to stabilise him before operating to remove the remainder of his front leg next week. “We put him on IV [intravenous] fluids as soon as he came in because he only had one front leg. He’s on about four different antibiotics and lots of pain relief,” she said. “We took an X-ray and one lung was collapsed from maybe being hit by a car. We are trying to get him stable before we do surgery on Monday or Tuesday next week. “I think he was just running around on the motorway and that’s what caused the traffic to stop.”

The kitten has not been microchipped or neutered so the vets believe he may have been wild. “He was very dirty, flea-ridden and had worms, he’s not in a good state,” Macgillivray said. “But he’s super-friendly, so he could potentially belong to someone.” In a Facebook post, she said, “He amazingly survived the night and is such a strong and purry little guy we are all hoping and praying he makes it! Please keep this wee man in your thoughts and prayers this weekend! He’s such a fighter but will definitely need all the warm happy thoughts he can get!” The post received 137 likes and many comments offering sympathy and best wishes. Giltrap workshop foreman Jason De Gier said a police officer arrived at about 11am yesterdaywith the kitten wedged above the police car’s rear differential. “We had to drop the whole rear suspension off and pull the differential down to get the cat out,” he said. “We got four guys on to it. With the impact gun and the right tools it took half an hour to get the cat out. It was like being in a pit stop [at a car race], the guys just got stuck in.

The three-month-old male kitten is recovering at the Glenﬁeld vet clinic after its ordeal. “As soon as the cat was out, I raced it down to the vet.” The four mechanics who extracted the kitten were Brad Bower, Reid Munro, Andrew Nijland and Jason Rowntree. De Gier said the police had

been trying to catch the kitten. “Somehow it got frightened and ran under the police car. At that stage it had already had one leg removed, because the police knew it was a three-legged cat that had gone under the car and

jumped into the suspension area and got stuck,” he said. “I guess with only one leg, it was probably pretty limited to where it could go, and I suppose it would have been frightened to hell as well.” - NZME

Big Lotto winner surfaces A young Central Otago man who bought a Lotto ticket on a whim is the lucky winner of the $22.3 million Powerball prize It is the largest Powerball prize won in the South Island. “I was scrolling through Facebook when I saw a post that Powerball was $22 million that night. “I thought that would be pretty sweet, so I bought a ticket through the Lotto NZ App and didn’t think any more of it,” said the winner, who is in this 20s. It wasn’t until Thursday evening that he thought to check his ticket. “I hadn’t heard anything about it to be honest. I was hanging out with my best mate after work when I remembered I’d bought a ticket, so figured I might as well check it. “I watched the numbers circle off on my ticket. After the first couple I thought that’s pretty lucky. Then I saw all six numbers circled and lined up in a row and didn’t really know what to think – then the Powerball came as well.” “I said, ‘Mate – I think I’ve won Powerball … is this real?’” the winner said. His parents were the next to hear the news and had trouble

In brief Charged over death A Hamilton man has been charged in relation to a crash which allegedly saw a car clip a tractor and crash into a ditch, killing his passenger. Jack Rathsamy, 23, briefly appeared in the Hamilton District Court yesterday charged with dangerous driving causing the death of Andrew Hendon on February 24, this year. He was allegedly driving his vehicle just north of Hamilton, when it clipped a tractor and then flipped into a ditch. Hendon died at the scene. ECan representation Environment Canterbury has shown “a lot of common sense” by amending its initial proposal for representation, Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher says. ECan now has 13 councillors, six appointed and seven elected. Before it returns to a fully democratically elected council next year, it is conducting a review and had proposed 13 elected councillors, including just one representing South Canterbury, which includes the entire Waitaki River catchment. Yesterday, ECan chairman Steve Lowndes confirmed that as a result of submissions, the council decided to increase its proposal to 14 councillors, including two representing South Canterbury. - NZME

Serves 4 2 x 200g Quality Mark sirloin steaks (about 2cm thick) 2T hoisin sauce (optional) 1 firm but ripe avocado, halved, stone removed and peeled Juice of 1 lemon 4 wraps 1/4 C cottage cheese 2C finely shredded iceberg lettuce 1 handful baby spinach leaves 1 lebanese cucumber, thinly sliced 1C grated carrot 1C mung bean sprouts Handful fresh parsley leaves ■ Preheat the barbecue grill until hot. ■ Rub steaks with a little oil, season and place on the hot grill. ■ Grill for 3-4 minutes then turn over

and grill for a further 3-4 minutes for medium cooked beef. Remove from grill and place on a plate. Brush each steak with the Hoisin sauce if using, then cover and set aside to rest for 5 minutes. ■ Mash avocado and mix with lemon juice and season. ■ Lay wraps out on the bench top. Spread mashed avocado over wraps, then the cottage cheese. All the way from Zimbabwe When Mid Canterbury takes to the field for the 2018 Heartland Championship, two Zimbabwean rugby players, who came to New Zealand to chase a dream, are hoping to play a vital part in their success. Erin Tasker reports.

rian Matoramusha and Shepherd Mhembere came to New Zealand to chase a rugby dream. That dream brought them to Mid Canterbury and today, the area is their home and they’re preparing to pull on the green and gold jersey of Mid Canterbury in this season’s Heartland Championship. It’s an opportunity that excites the Zimbabwean duo and one that they’re grateful for. Last year they were on the sideline at Mid Canterbury’s home games, hoping that one day they might earn the right to take to the field themselves. They did get called up for one training last year, and while that was where their involvement ended in 2017, it gave them a taste of what could be and made them more determined than ever to make it happen. “We came and watched these guys play the year we were playing for Hampstead and said probably one day, that might be us,” Matoramusha said. Last year they played their club rugby for Hampstead and wins were hard to come by, but this season they switched their allegiances to Celtic, out of a desire to keep on learning, and things changed for them. They finished the club season as members of Mid Canterbury Rugby’s winning Watters Cup team and later that same day were named in the Mid Canterbury team. Both had played rugby at a high level in South Africa, but the Heartland Championship would be a step up in terms of intensity from what they’d experienced in their more than two years in New Zealand so far, and they can’t wait to get into it. Their motivation was born out of a desire to make their families proud back home in Zimbabwe. “That’s why I keep working hard, for my family back home. Every time I feel like giving up I think about them, especially my mum, as I was raised by a single mum. My dad passed away when I was eight,” Matoramusha said. Their focus in New Zealand is learning and growing. “It’s always about learning and getting better every day. It’s not competing with anyone, it’s just competing with yourself and making yourself a better player,” Mhembere said. “We came here to chase a dream, pretty much, and be better than we were yesterday, every moment.” “The reason why we get motivated and go to the gym every day is because of our families back home,” Matoramusha said. knew behind in April, 2016, was a big decision, particularly for Matoramusha. Conscious of all his mum had done for him growing up, Matoramusha was unsure about leaving, but Mhembere convinced him to give it a shot and they boarded a plane together bound for New Zealand knowing that if it didn’t work out they could always go home. When they arrived in New Zealand, the boys played a season for the small Heriot club in Otago before finding themselves in Mid Canterbury. They knew no-one in the district but their old coach back home put them on to an Ashburton woman he knew – Moira Youngquest. The pair now regard her and son Thomas as their Kiwi family. “If it wasn’t for her, I think we would be home at the moment,” Mhembere said. “She took us as her own sons.” In Ashburton they got jobs – lock Mhembere for CanStaff and winger Matoramusha on a dairy farm – and joined the Hampstead seniors for the 2017 season. “It wasn’t the best in terms of scores and that, but the boys there, they were amazing and it’s really good to hang out with those boys. It’s like a brotherhood,” Mhembere said. Moving to Celtic this season and winning Mid Canterbury Rugby’s showpiece, the Watters Cup, was mind-blowing for them.

“Even now, it’s still like a dream,” Matoramusha said. “The kids that ran on at the end, that was a really special moment.” It was like being an All Black, they said. “Those Celtic kids are something else,” Mhembere said. In the less than 18 months they’ve been in Ashburton, the duo have become pretty wellknown figures. “Everyone knows us – they say ‘that’s Brian and Shepherd’. Even if we go to the pool, young kids will come and greet us, it’s pretty cool,” Mhembere said. As a kid himself, Mhembere loved rugby, but for Matoramusha it was a different story. He played soccer until his speed caught the attention of rugby coaches who talked him into switching codes. “I was 15 at the time and they chucked me in the under-16 team and I was pretty nervous. The first time I caught the ball I just ran like a headless chicken,” Matoramusha said. “And from there I just fell in love with it.” He was fast, but so was Mhembere. Both represented Zimbabwe at athletics, as well as playing rugby for the Zimbabwe under-20s. Switching to rugby was a move Matoramusha never imagined he’d make, but he proved to be pretty handy at it, and got a scholarship to attend Prince Ed-

ward College in Harare where his rugby captain, and head boy, was Mhembere. After leaving school Mhembere was contracted to the Blue Bulls and Matoramusha received offers from both the Stormers and Sharks Super Rugby franchises. Mhembere had been part of the Mustangs rugby academy in South Africa and Matoramusha headed there when he finished school too. “I just saw myself following in his footsteps – my aim was to play for the Blue Bulls too.” But Mhembere was like a brother to him, so after much

discussion he decided to take the plunge and travel to New Zealand and neither regret it. He’d only been at the academy for two months when they decided to board a plane to New Zealand not really knowing what awaited them. “We probably thought at the airport we were going to see Richie McCaw or something,” Mhembere laughed. He was a huge fan of Kiwi rugby, while Matoramusha favoured the South African style and sevens over 15s, once dreaming of representing South Africa at sevens.

Last year he made the Mid Canterbury sevens team which went to the nationals and recalled getting goose-bumps as the national anthem reverberated around the Rotorua stadium, despite not knowing the words. “I didn’t know rugby, but now I know New Zealand is rugby,” Matoramusha said. Both Mhembere and Matoramusha thrived on challenges. Both were firm believers in there was no such thing as doing something wrong, it was all about what you did next. “We are not scared to fail,” Matoramusha said.

“If you fail, you get up. That’s how you learn,” Mhembere said. That was something they had in common with their Mid Canterbury coach Sean Carter. They said Carter had taught them there were no bad decisions in rugby and to never leave the field with ‘what ifs’. “I always tell (Matoramusha) there’s nothing called wrong, it’s about what can you do better,” Mhembere said. The words give up are not in their vocabulary. “If you were to explain about Brian and Shepherd today, just put the word positive,” Mhem-

bere said. “Even when we fall and in the hard times, we never see the negative. Negativity does not exist in our minds. We just choose to be positive.” “A challenge comes your way so you can walk over it, that’s how we see it,” Matoramusha said. They know there will be more challenges in their future. They are keen to stay in New Zealand, but every 12 months they have to renew their visas. Whatever their futures hold though, rugby will continue to play a part. “I can’t say the South African dream has gone away. If the opportunity comes I’d just have to weigh up my options,” Matoramusha said. “But at the moment I’m just focusing on Mid Canterbury and anything that comes after that we’ll just see how it goes.” They are about living in the moment. “The goal for me, for Shepherd Mhembere, is to be better every moment. Every moment I get I’m going to grab it with both hands and just try to be better every day and see where that will get me.” Matoramusha is determined to simply keep growing as a player. “That’s the first thing I want, to get more skills, and I want to be a part of the Mid Canterbury team and contribute something to the team and be a part of history. I want to win the cup and I want to be in the final, and the other

thing is to just have fun,” Matoramusha said. Coming to New Zealand aged just 20 meant he’d had to grow up quickly. He said he struggled socially initially and found it hard being so far away from his mum. “It was really hard for me to open up to people. I couldn’t keep a conversation with someone for more than five minutes if I didn’t know them.” But with Mhembere’s help he has gradually felt more at ease to the point where now, New Zealand felt like home. They weren’t big fans of the Mid Canterbury winter, but they loved the Kiwi way of life and Kiwi food. They loved nothing more than sitting down to a feed of kumara mash and chops – pork chops for Mhembere and lamb chops for Matoramusha – as they dissected their latest exploits on the field. The road to where he was today hadn’t always been easy, but Matoramusha hoped he could help to inspire younger generations. “For the kids in this community, just for them to keep believing in something, have a goal and never give up.” Coach Carter said the sheer desire and determination of both players was what had struck him about them. “Their desire and passion to be better and to learn both on the field and off the field … they are really willing and eager and keen to take as much information

on board to become both better rugby players,” Carter said. They may have come to New Zealand as a package deal, but if one of them had made it big and the other hadn’t, it wouldn’t have bothered them. “If he gets successful or if he gets better than me, I’m happy for him like I’m happy for my own,” Mhembere said. The fact they’d both made the Mid Canterbury squad was a blessing to them. They were excited about making the step up together and hopefully giving the region they now called home something to cheer about in a few weeks’ time. They came to New Zealand wanting to experience a different style and level of rugby, but they’ve ended up getting so much more. They’ve found a home away from home and they hope to remain in New Zealand for a long time and go as far as they can with their rugby. “That’s everyone’s dream, to be an All Black one day,” Mhembere said. “I can’t say the South African dream has gone away. If the opportunity comes I’ll take it, I just have to weigh my options and see. “At the moment I’m just focusing on Mid Canterbury. Anything that comes after that we’ll see how it goes,” Mhembere said. “Life’s a journey, you have to enjoy it.”

Where’s the biodegradable bags?

t’s been on the radar for years, it’s been tried, trialled, abandoned and revisited, but finally the ban on single use plastic bags is here and hopefully it’s here to stay. Banning those bags is the easy part. The move has the backing of the major supermarket chains and most people seem to think it’s a pretty decent idea. It is. We can’t carry on as we have since they were invented in the ’60s, piling our purchases into bags that ended up in landfill sites or blowing in the wind and decorating landscapes around the country. It’s appalling that for decades with little thought, we’ve used a product that after just a few minutes use ends up in landfill,

remaining in its original state for hundreds of years. Countless generations down the track, future Kiwis will be able to dig up those landfill sites and marvel at the plastic artifacts they’ll uncover. What a legacy to leave. Getting rid of plastic requires the co-operation of everyone from the manufacturing and packaging industries to the shopper on the street. It’ll be a long

process and there will be resistance. The big question is, what do we replace these bags with? Apart from carrying goods and groceries, we’ll need something to line bins with, put bits and pieces of rubbish into, to carry dirty shoes, to protect plants from frost. The list is endless. Yes, there are products coming onto the market that promote themselves as biodegradable bags designed for just those purposes, but how good are they? What’s their lifespan when they’re tossed into landfill sites? Check out any supermarket now and virtually every trolley has reusable bags on board. It’s an embarrassment if you happen to have forgotten yours and have to

skulk out of the supermarket with a plastic bag in hand. If we’re serious about this plastic bag ban then we need alternative products that spell out clearly what their in ground lifespan is and we need them at a reasonable price. The issue of what to replace plastic bags with is simple – take your own reusable bag if you’re the shopper or switch to paper bags if you’re a retailer. Wrap stuff in brown or newspaper if you have to. The key to all of this however, is having good alternatives at a reasonable price. That’ll determine the outcome. No point in having products that are only marginally better. No point in having products that come with a hefty price

tag. And therein lies the challenge. Search the internet and you’ll find a host of manufacturers producing bags for all purposes from garden waste and dog poop to kitchen bin liners. They variously describe those bags as bio, eco, compostable, made from bio plastic, made from maize. The list is long, but virtually none spell out how long it will take before those breakdown and become an indistinguishable part of the soil. For Kiwis venturing into this new plastic bagless world, it’s very confusing. If we’re making the change we need to know we’re changing to a product that is actually better. We need to know we’re making a real change not simply swapping plastic for a Claytons replacement.

ike me, you might have thought Dr Don Brash’s day had not only come but well and truly gone. Not so! It seems it has, still, some hours to run. The former Reserve Bank Governor, almost National Party Prime Minister, Act leader and a man of advancing years and, seemingly, affable disposition, has been very much in our faces and our news this past week. It all began when the lady vice-chancellor (VC) of Massey University decided the good doctor’s presence on campus could lead to untold upheaval, unrest and danger to life and limb. Thus the invitation of the university political club to Dr Brash was refused by the said VC, in her capacity as both judge and jury in such matters. This peremptory decision was met with both surprise and strongly-expressed criticism. Dr Brash’s long-held and oftexpressed view is that we in New Zealand are all one people and should be treated as such, even though the expression of such an opinion led to his having mud thrown in his face at a political rally in 2004. That it was also a startlingly popular opinion that very nearly saw him onto the ninth floor of the Beehive is another story. Currently, he leads a semi political group under the name of Hobson’s Pledge – he of Treaty of Waitangi fame – whose pledge was the very same, “Now, we are

all one people”. One way or another, Dr Brash would seem to be an unlikely rabble-rouser at whose meetings armed guards should be in close attendance. It also seemed unlikely there would be too much “hate speech” on display. Thus, “freedom of speech”, a concept with which we have become very familiar in the past few months, emerged as the issue, lurking just below the surface. Inevitably, his banning from Massey caught the attention of the media, who descended on it with some relish. The outcome seems to have been the direct intervention of the University of Auckland, who quickly made it clear Dr Brash was welcome to come among them and express to the students whatever it was he had in mind. Thus Auckland entered the same controversy but “from the other side” – as it were. Subsequently, Dr Brash spoke without a riot following though, like all speakers, he had to put up with a fair amount of heckling, good-natured or otherwise.

The fact is that incidents like this are becoming the norm. The days when one could “express one’s opinion – however strongly – without fear or favour” have been replaced by the endlessly analytical approach which looks for racial, gender and religious slurs – among many others – that the current obsession with political correctness make utterly unacceptable. Recently, two Canadians made the headlines as being “hate speakers” of a particularly virulent nature whom Phil Goff – in his capacity as Mayor of Auckland – felt would be better made persona non grata in his city in the face of the possible social consequences of a visit from them. After endless negotiations for recognition and for a venue, I believe the “hate speakers” returned to Canada unheard here. There again “public safety” was the reason given for their banning and their expulsion. We now live in a world awash with such heated language. “I disapprove of what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it”, supposedly said Voltaire, the great French sage of the eighteenth century. No doubt he remained faithful to his noble declaration and the world was all the better for it. Nowadays, however, the insidious involvement of social media has not only muddied the waters but poisoned them beyond any

known method of de-contamination. Trump bears a fair amount of responsibility for this state of affairs. No man who lies through his teeth, as he does, but spends as much time accusing others of doing the same – with gratuitous personal insults thrown in – try “lowlife” – can expect any sort of trust or respect. That he happens, by awful mischance, to be the President of the United States makes his influence even more pernicious. Free speech in America is now well-established as a licence to defame and destroy. We don’t want such licence here. It’s up to Jacinda and her well-meaning comrades to see it doesn’t slip in under the proverbial radar. Afterthought: One of Dr Brash’s current criticisms – of some years’ standing – is his objection to Maori counsellors being appointed to local councils with full voting rights but no prior election to justify their being round the table in the first place. Would not most New Zealanders agree with him? Bridge’s design queried The bridge that collapsed in the Italian port city of Genoa was considered a feat of engineering innovation when it was built five decades ago, but it came to require constant maintenance over the years. Its design is now being investigated as a possible contributor to its stunning collapse. The Morandi Bridge was severed in its midsection during a heavy downpour. Government officials initially said 39 people were killed but revised the death toll to 38 yesterday. Italian prosecutors focused their investigation into possible design flaws or inadequate maintenance of the bridge that opened in 1967. Engineering experts said the disaster points to the challenges of maintaining any ageing bridge, regardless of its design. “What the general public does not comprehend is that bridges have been traditionally designed in the past for a life span of 50 years,” said Neil Hawkins, a professor emeritus of engineering at the University of Illinois, who specialises in reinforced and prestressed concrete design. “The environment in which the bridge exists can have a major effect on how much it can last beyond that 50-year design life span.” The structure is a cable stayed bridge designed by Italian engineer Riccardo

And on Wednesday night, the blockbuster’s leading stars John Travolta, 64, and Olivia Newton-John, 69, reunited for a special anniversary screening at Beverly Hills’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The pair, who played couple Sandy Olsson and Danny Zuko, shared a friendly kiss as they joined their co-stars on the red carpet, and even showed onlookers they’ve still got their show-stopping dance moves all these years later. Grease was the highest grossing movie of 1978, with its soundtrack album selling over 28 million copies worldwide.

Bodies of missing wife, daughters found After his pregnant wife and two daughters disappeared, Christopher Watts stood on his porch in Colorado and lamented to reporters how much he missed them. He longed for the simple things, he said, like telling his girls to eat their dinner and gazing at them as they curled up to watch cartoons. “Last night, I had every light in the house on. I was hoping that I would just get ran over by the kids running in the door, just barrel-rushing me, but it didn’t happen,” he told Denver TV station KMGH. Yesterday, Watts was in jail after being arrested on suspicion of killing his family, probably before he spoke those words. Authorities did not offer a motive. The body of 34-year-old Shanann Watts was found on property owned by Anadarko Petroleum, one of the state’s largest oil and gas drillers, where Christopher Watts worked, police said. Investigators found what they believe are the bodies of 4-year-old Bella and 3-yearold Celeste nearby later.

Vatican condemns ‘predator’ priests Pope Francis is on the side of victims of more than 300 “predator” priests in the US accused of abusing children in one state, the Vatican says. In a statement, it said the Church wanted to listen to the victims to “root out this tragic horror”. This comes after US prosecutors found that more than 1000 children had been molested by clergy in Pennsylvania. The US Conference of Catholic Bishop is now calling for an urgent investigation led by the Vatican. Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, the group’s president, called the scandal a “failure of episcopal leadership”. It comes days after the largestever probe of Catholic sex abuse in the US. The report from a Pennsylvania grand jury found that 301 priests abused children in the state over the past 70 years. It also found that some abusers and those that covered up their crimes were later elevated to senior roles in the church. Cardinal DiNardo of Texas said in a statement yesterday – two days after the report was issued – that the church is now “faced with a spiritual crisis that requires not only spiritual conversion, but practical changes to avoid repeating the sins and failures that are so evident in this recent report”. Plane skids off rainy Manila runway A plane from China skidded off a runway at Manila’s airport while landing in a downpour near midnight then got stuck in a muddy field with one engine and wheel ripped off before its 157 passengers and eight crew scrambled out through an emergency slide, officials said yesterday. Only a few passengers sustained bruises but all those aboard Xiamen Air Flight 8667 were safe and were taken to an airport terminal, where they were given blankets and food before being taken to a hotel, airport general manager Ed Monreal told a news conference. - AP

Veterans’ parade delayed until at least 2019 The Defense Department says the Veterans Day military parade ordered up by President Donald Trump won’t happen in 2018. Col. Rob Manning, a Pentagon spokesman, said yesterday that the military and the White House “have now agreed to explore opportunities in 2019”. Boy’s remains identified Forensic investigators said they had identified the remains of a Georgia boy whose father is accused of abducting him and performing purification rituals on the child as he died at a remote New Mexico desert compound. The cause of the child’s death remained unknown. The body of Abdul-ghani Wahhaj was found August 6 in an underground tunnel. It was so severely decomposed that investigators could not yet determine how the severely disabled boy reported missing in December had died, New Mexico’s Office of the Medical Investigator said in a statement. - AP Cardinal Daniel DiNardo called the scandal a “failure of episcopal leadership”. Catholic Bishops (USCCB) had outlined three goals to prevent further abuse, and punish “predators in the Church and anyone who would conceal them”. The USCCB said it would expand third-party reporting mechanisms that already exist in some dioceses for victims of abuse. It pledged to streamline the complaints process, to make it “more prompt, fair, and transparent and to specify what constraints may be imposed on bishops at each stage of that process”. And the bishops called for a papal representative to investigate allegations of sexual abuse against former Washington DC Cardinal Theodore McCarrick,

88, who resigned last month. He is alleged to have personally abused several boys, including one altar boy 47 years ago. Pope Francis immediately accepted his resignation and ordered him to pray as he awaits a church trial to consider further punishment. Judge finds conspiracy to kill Kim Two women accused in the brazen assassination of the North Korean leader’s half brother were told yesterday to make their defence after a Malaysian judge found evidence they participated in a “wellplanned conspiracy” to kill, extending their murder trial until next year. Indonesia’s Siti Aisyah and Vietnam’s Doan Thi Huong are accused of smearing VX nerve agent on Kim Jong Nam’s face in an airport terminal in Kuala Lumpur on February 13, 2017. They face the death penalty if convicted. High Court Judge Azmi Ariffin found inadequate proof of a political assassination and said enough evidence had been presented in the six-month trial to infer the women and four North Korean suspects at large had meticulously engaged in a “well-planned conspiracy” to kill Kim “systemically,” he said. - AP

US security leaders blast Trump Former US security officials issued scathing rebukes to President Donald Trump, admonishing him for yanking a top former spy chief’s security clearance in what they cast as an act of political vengeance. Trump said he’d had to do “something” about the “rigged” federal probe of Russian election interference. Trump’s admission that he acted out of frustration about the Russia probe underscored his willingness to use his executive power to fight back against an investigation he sees as a threat to his presidency. The music icon, who influenced generations of singers with unforgettable hits such as Respect (1967), Natural Woman (1968) and I Say a Little Prayer (1968), was surrounded by family and friends when she died at 9.50am on Thursday local time. “It is with deep and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Aretha Louise Franklin, the Queen of Soul,” her family said in a statement issued by her publicist. “In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. “We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds.” Her death from advanced pancreatic cancer was followed by an

outpouring of grief, with celebrities flocking to pay their respects to the unbeatable singer. John Legend tweeted: “Salute to the Queen. Gains as investors take stock New Zealand shares rose yesterday as investors took stock in a brief lull to the domestic corporate earnings season, with Skellerup Holdings extending Thursday’s gain to break a new record. The S&P/NZX 50 index advanced 53.86 points, or 0.6 per cent to 9,052.77, the highest since July 10. Within the index, 32 stocks gained, eight fell, and 10 were unchanged. Turnover was $96.3 million. Earnings season took a breather yesterday ahead of heavy reporting days next Wednesday and Thursday. Local investors took the opportunity to digest the early starters, such as Skellerup’s record profit yesterday. The shares rose 4.8 per cent to a record $2.19, adding to yesterday’s 4 per cent gain. Among other companies to have already reported, SkyCity Entertainment Group increased 1 per cent to $4.19, Freightways gained 0.5 per cent to $7.58, Contact Energy slipped 0.2 per cent to $5.80, Precinct Properties

New Zealand was unchanged at $1.415, while Summerset Group Holdings declined 0.9 per cent to $7.50. “It is the calm before the storm – next Wednesday we’ve got an enormous day of market cap reporting,” said Nikko Asset Management head of equities Stuart Williams. “Anyone who’s disappointing in this result or in terms of their future guidance is getting absolutely slammed, so there’s little room for disappointment.” Blue chip stocks underpinned the day’s wider gain. Ryman Healthcare rose 3.7 per cent to $13.35, Air New Zealand increased 1.5 per cent to $3.37, Mainfreight advanced 1.3 per cent to $28.15, Spark New Zealand gained 0.9 per cent to $3.96 and Auckland International Airport was up 0.8 per cent to $6.865. Mercury NZ, which reports next Tuesday, yesterday announced a pilot subscription service letting people rent a range of electric vehicles on a monthly basis. Its shares rose 0.3 per cent to $3.38.

Treated ‘like naughty school kids’ Property developer John Chow says he and brother Michael have been treated like “two naughty school kids” in their suspension from the National Business Review rich list. The Chow brothers are in charge of a substantial business portfolio including commercial properties, strip clubs and brothels. In last year’s rich list, the pair was said by NBR to be worth $170 million. But NBR says it suspended them from the list this year “pending further investigation” after the brothers delisted their Chow Group. “Property and finance remain John and Michael Chow’s core business. However, their plans to take NZAX-listed Chow Group private has led to NBR taking a closer look at their privately held assets and their membership has been suspended pending further investigation,” NBR said. Mid Canterbury Netball’s ACL premier one semi-finalists have been found after a final round which featured a surprise result and a surprisingly large winning margin. Only two teams – Celtic A and Methven A – were secure in their semi-final spots heading into the final games of the round robin, while three teams were still in contention for the remaining two semi-final positions. Those positions went to Ashburton College A courtesy of a big win over Hampstead A on Thursday night, and Mt Somers, despite losing 37-17 to Celtic A in the final round. The results mean Celtic A willmeet Mt Somers again next week in one semi-final, while after finishing tied on the table on 12 points Ashburton College A will

take on Methven A, the side which came out on the wrong side of the biggest surprise on Thursday night. They took on Celtic B in a game which essentially had nothing riding on it, with Celtic B the only team that didn’t have a chance of making the finals. They hadn’t won a game since earning themselves promotion to the top flight but they came close. With nothing to lose against Methven A, Celtic B finally produced the full four-quarter performance they’d been searching for and won 35-31, with a late turnover denying Methven A a bonus point. Celtic B led all the way, although they did lose one quarter, and the players were ecstatic to finally get a win on the board, coaches Marie Kennedy and Di Ness said. They said their team had been relaxed all week and was deter-

mined to just have fun in their last game, knowing the semis were out of reach, and that attitude paid off for them. They said their side supported each other well throughout the court and their shooters had their best night in a long time, while their defensive end also worked well. They knew Methven A were strong and they’d have to step up, and they did just that. Methven A coach Marie Firth said while it was disappointing to lose, Celtic B played well. “I just think Celtic B played a good game at pace and in some respects we allowed them to,” Firth said. “They played really well and we did a couple of things to try and counter that and they didn’t pan out.” A loss heading into the semi-finals wasn’t ideal, but it also wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, Firth said.

“It gives us an insight into losing in some respects and we don’t like that losing feeling … who does? “I think you will see a different team that takes to the court next week,” Firth said. Methven A will take on an Ashburton College A side on a high after their convincing win over Hampstead A, 36-22. With the winner of that match set to make it to the semi-finals and effectively dash the opposing side’s hopes, College A got off to the better start, leading 11-7 at the first quarter break, and they gradually built on that lead as the game progressed. With the margin 12 by three-quarter time, the game was College’s. College A coach Kaye Kennedy said it was another good performance, after her side also downed Kaiapoi High School 43-32 in their latest SuperNet Canterbury secondary schools’ netball competi-

tion on Wednesday night. “When we score off our own centre pass we are actually amassing a very high number of goals,” Kennedy said. “And (on Thursday night) we did a good job of scoring off our turnovers so it was a fantastic whole team effort and the defence through the whole court was great.” In premier two action on Thursday night, United A were in fine form again, downing Methven B 40-7, while Southern A also notched up a big win, 53-19 over Rakaia A. Ashburton College B were the night’s other winners, downing Celtic C 41-22. United A and Southern A were the form team heading into the business end of the premier two competition, with United A set to take on Celtic C in one semi-final next week, and Southern A to face Ashburton College B in the other.

Mid Canterbury have one last chance to iron out any kinks before the 2018 Heartland Championship begins, when they take on Canterbury Metro in Ashburton today. It’s the second of two warm-up games for Mid Canterbury before they head to Foxton to take on Horowhenua-Kapiti in the first round of this season’s Heartland Championship next weekend and coach Sean Carter and his men know they’ll be in for a battle. Canterbury Metro were traditionally a strong side, and this year would be no exception, Carter said. In the mix would be numerous players striving to go on to higher honours. “When you look at it, they (Canterbury) named a wider training squad of 32 earlier this season and probably only three made it into the Mitre 10 Cup teams, so the other players are filtered back down into teams like this,” Carter said. Mid Canterbury named their Heartland Championship side just two weeks ago, following the Mid Canterbury Rugby Watters Cup final, and they took on South Canterbury last weekend and went down 28-17 in the first of their build-up games. Carter said games like the South Canterbury one, and today’s Canterbury Metro clash, weren’t so much about winning as they were getting their combinations and systems in place ahead of the Heartland Championship. “We’ll be looking to iron out any creases

that we have identified. It’s the stuff that we didn’t do that well, that will be the focus,” Carter said. “We don’t have the luxury of time to correct things.” After last weekend’s loss to South Canterbury, Carter said he was impressed with the way Mid Canterbury’s forwards fronted despite giving away a lot on size. They also scored some good tries through their backs and would be looking to build on the positives as well as working on those things that didn’t go so well last week, against Canterbury Metro. Despite receiving a knock to the thigh against South Canterbury, Seta Koroitamana had been expected to take to the field at openside today, but he’d been full of the flu this week so Finn Cleary from Mt Somers had been brought in as cover. One player who definitely wouldn’t be there today was first-five Jarred Percival. The loan player from Christchurch who had been instrumental in many a Mid Canterbury win in the past, was away this weekend, which would give Mid Canterbury a chance to give Celtic’s Nathan McCloy or Rakaia’s Tom Hanham-Carter a run in the number 10 jersey. Carter said with just the one match left before heading into the Heartland Championship, he and fellow coaching team members Jason Rickard and Dale Palmer were pleased with where the team was at. But, there were a number of players in the Mid Canterbury development side who were knocking on the door and pushing for positions, and Carter said he was definitely taking notice.

Bob itching for new season’s innings By Erin TaskEr

A stellar 2018 has continued for long-serving Mid Canterbury Cricket official Bob Bruhns, with another piece of silverware added to his collection. Bruhns was last weekend awarded the Brian Williamson Award for Excellence by the Canterbury Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association and admitted he was blown away when he found out he’d be receiving it. The various criteria for the award stated the nominee must be someone who had demonstrated something commendable, had a positive impact on the game or made a significant contribution, be a team player and a great ambassador for the sport, and have contributed to the development or success of their local association of the Canterbury Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association. Anyone who knows Bruhns could tell you he well and truly met that criteria, although the man himself was a little more modest. He was proud of what he’s achieved though in his long association with the game, from the happy afternoons spent on the boundary keeping score, to the countless hours he’s spent researching the history of Mid Canterbury Cricket. But he’s done all out of his love for the game. Bruhns – who was earlier this year awarded the community official of the year award at the New Zealand Cricket Awards – has been official scorekeeper for Mid Canterbury in over 200 senior representative matches, including 100 Hawke Cup encounters, after moving to the district from Palmerston 40 years ago. His love for the game began a long time before that though. He began as a youngster down in the Eastern Districts cricket region, which now no longer exists, where as a player he was an opening batsman. After his playing days he turned to umpiring, officiating at New Zealand B panel level before eyesight issues saw him move to scorekeeping instead. The first game he was the official scorer for was a match at the Ashburton Domain Oval between a young England side featuring a

Ashburton’s Brian Sampson was the sole Ashburton player on the field that day, and Bruhns – who was originally appointed to the match as reserve umpire – was asked to score. He still had the scoresheet from that day. It was just one part of a huge collection which filled a couple of big bookshelves in his Ashburton home. As well as scoring for Mid Canterbury, Bruhns had also been the official scorer for the Allenton Cricket Club’s senior side, and he had every Allenton scoresheet dating back to 1985. But his most extensive collection was that of Mid Canterbury Cricket.

In the mid-1990s, the Ashburton County Cricket Association was celebrating its centenary, and Bruhns found himself with a job to do. “They wanted me to do some research because I was scoring at the time and they wanted me to find a bit of information for the centenary, because they had nothing,” Bruhns said. To get the records right, he had to keep going backwards, so he spent more hours than many could probably imagine sitting at the library writing everything he could by hand from scoresheets in old newspapers. He’d then bring them home and wife June would type them up for him.

Bruhns said for any information he couldn’t find he’d write to other newspapers or libraries around New Zealand, and managed to get his hands on every New Zealand Cricket almanac since 1948. It was hard work, but he got there. The only holes in his work were the odd dismissal where the person who caught the ball hadn’t been recorded. “Now, in the future they will have something very special. All they have to do is add any new matches in,” Bruhns said. And that shouldn’t be too hard. Life had become a lot easier for cricket scorers in recent years thanks to technology. He was now able to live score using the Total Cricket Scorer programme on his

computer and while it had taken a bit of getting used to at the beginning, it had proven to be a big winner in his eyes. It allowed him to watch more of the games as he just needed to record what had happened while his laptop calculated the required data. Although he was now an expert on live cricket scoring, he wasn’t so keen on all technology. “I don’t even know how to text and have no inclination to either, I believe a telephone is there to talk on,” Bruhns said. How long he’d keep scoring for, Bruhns didn’t know, but as winter dragged on he found himself longing to get back out to games, so chances are he’ll be scoring for some time to come yet.

Williamson gives verdict on new coach Gary Stead New Zealand cricket captain Kane Williamson has pointed to Gary Stead’s temperament as a key factor in his selection as Black Caps coach. Williamson was consulted during the appointment process, and had a chance to question Stead once the shortlist was established. However, previous cameos by Stead within the New Zealand setup gave the skipper a gauge. “That role was specific to batting, but he has a good manner. I think that’s important, because

at international level you can go through so many emotions. “Staying calm while that’s going on is vital. That’s something that stood out for me, but it’s a small sample size so it’s hard to go into too much detail until we get to know each other better.” That will start with coffee when Williamson returns next month from his stint with Yorkshire. He will play two more first-class fixtures, and the play-offs of the England T20 competition if his side beats Nottinghamshire this [Sat-

urday] morning. “We had a brief discussion when it [the coaching field] got narrowed down, so it was nice to cover off a few things,” Williamson said. “It’s an exciting time for Gary. He’s gone through the coaching levels with Canterbury and I’ve heard a lot of good things from their players. “It has come about quite suddenly, as has been well-documented [with Mike Hesson’s resignation], but at the same time I’m sure he’ll come into it in a relaxed

fashion which I think is important with the group we’ve got.” Williamson said having Stead involved in Craig McMillan’s absence, like during the 2016-17 series against Bangladesh, had been good as a way to offer an insight into the team dynamic. “That has perhaps given him a few ideas on things he might want to introduce or touch on, and also some of things he might want to continue doing. There will definitely be a transition period, as always happens when you bring in a

new player, a support staff member, and certainly a head coach. “We’ll try to make that as seamless as possible because there are a number of areas that are going well which we want to continue, but at the same time things will be a little different and it’s important we’re challenged with a fresh set of eyes and a new voice.” Williamson endorsed the presence of recently-retired Luke ronchi and incumbent test wicketkeeper BJ Watling on the selection panel. - NZME

Sharplin shares tips for success By Erin TaskEr

For as long as he can remember, squash has played a huge role in Daniel Sharplin’s life. Through squash he made lifelong friends, travelled the world, competed at two Commonwealth Games, created a career and even met his wife. Today, Sharplin is based in America where he lives just outside of Boston with his wife and two kids – aged 11 and 13 – and works at a high school where he coaches the boys’ squash team and runs his own squash academy which had more than 200 kids on its books. Squash had taken him places, but he never forgets where his love for the sport began. Sharplin grew up in Hinds with the Hinds Squash Club just over his back fence and it became like his second home. This week, a wedding of a longtime squash friend brought him home to New Zealand for a few days. It was the first time he’d been back in New Zealand in seven years and, eager to give back, he took time out of his schedule to take to the court with some of the Midlands Squash district’s budding young squash players, hosting a squash clinic at the Timaru Squash Club. “I remember when I was a kid and it was nice when we had players who had been top players in the past come down and get on court with us,” Sharplin said. Back in his day, squash was big, but these days with so many different sporting options on offer for young people, it was different. “It’s definitely not as popular as it was back in the day. We were lucky, squash in the 1980s and stuff was a bit of a hit, because we had Susan Devoy and Ross Norman who were doing well on the world circuit and that kind of thing,” Sharplin said. “But it looks like it’s making a bit of a comeback with Joelle King doing well at the Commonwealth Games and getting some good press time, and Paul Coll with the men’s side of things, and that helps inspire particularly the younger generation. That’s how it was for me.” Sharplin had fond memories of his days growing up playing squash. “Squash has given me every-

thing. I grew up in a really small town and had some travelling opportunities … I had never been on a plane until I got in the Midlands team to go to nationals, so that was exciting for me as a 12-yearold,” he said. “I was very fortunate coming through in that they’d just started the New Zealand Institute of Squash and I was offered one of the very first scholarships to go to Auckland and train in a full-time capacity and I had a lot of support and funding from New Zealand Squash.” At the age of 18 he embarked on the squash world tour, attending tournaments around the world, until an unexpected deportation from England opened his eyes to the coaching world. He’d been in and out of Eng-

land so often that he eventually got told he’d been there too long, so he moved to Luxembourg to take up a coaching position and eventually became the country’s squash coach, while also playing in professional leagues around Europe. It was then that he found some of his best form, beating the then world number four, seven and 10, despite only having got as high as 76 in the world rankings himself. “People say things happen for a reason and at the time it’s like having different doors and you go through one door and all of a sudden you’re on a different path. I’ve been through a lot of different doors, but squash has always been the constant,” Sharplin said. After moving to America 17 years ago, Sharplin spent years

coaching in private clubs before being approached by a school – Noble and Greenough School – to become their coach. It was one of America’s top five schools for squash and had amazing facilities with six courts and a gym, and Sharplin took them up on the offer. He coached the school’s boys’ squash team during the winter – November to February – and also ran his own squash academy there. “It’s kind of like having your own club but you don’t have to pay for it,” he said. “So it’s nice and I’m very fortunate that they offered me the position and that I can run the academy from there.” His goal was to take kids to a level where they could play uni-

versity squash, but it was a competitive world and squash was on the up in America. Sharplin said three for four schools in the Boston area had recently built new squash courts. Running an academy and effectively being his own boss also came with a bit of freedom. It allowed him to do things like make a quick trip to New Zealand for a wedding, or play in the World Masters Championships in Virginia – like he did a week or two before heading home. “I sort of laugh about it. I’ve never really had what I would call a ‘real job’. I play a game for a living and I enjoy the game a lot, and I’ve had some great life experiences out of the game and met some fantastic people all over the world,” Sharplin said.

New Zealand Hockey bosses set for crisis meeting Hockey’s bosses and its players association will meet on Monday to try and resolve problems around the women’s Black Sticks in the wake of a damaging email critical of players before the World Cup last month. Hockey New Zealand moved to shut the issue down after longtime coach Mark Hager wrote an email which was negative towards three players before the World

Cup. But instead of sending it to just its one intended recipient, a member of his coaching/support staff, he inadvertently sent it to all his players. Hager has apologised in person to the group and each player individually, but rather than die away the matter is simmering. Former goalkeeper Amelia Gibson spoke out this week detailing the reasons she walked away from

the game. Fear kept her quiet, she said. Gibson, who won 63 caps since 2010, believed she had no choice but to cut short her career, citing a negative environment within the Black Sticks. “You want to be treated with integrity, you want to be able to play to the best of your ability but if you’re in a negative environment it’s not possible to perform,” she

told One News. “It becomes pretty real when you’re at home crying most days. “I was too scared to say anything because I didn’t want to ruin my chances.” Gibson said she sought help from a team psychologist then chose to go outside the team environment. She raised her concerns with HNZ, who have acknowledged

they received a complaint from a third party but felt it didn’t require further action at the time. That view is being revisited. Players association executive manager Glen Sulzberger said initially the bulk of the feedback from players was of the ‘time to move on’ variety. Some thought the issue was sorted, but others still had concerns that needed addressing. - NZME

Backline busting with talent By Wynne Gray It seemed strange the All Blacks went for some mix and match selections in their backs. It felt a waste to have the world’s best fullback Ben Smith out on the wing or the reliable Ryan Crotty at centre when he was so effective as a voice and director closer to the action. Injury and circumstance forced those choices at times but apart from the injured Sonny Bill Williams the selectors had a clean sheet for this weekend’s start of the Bledisloe Cup. Crossed fingers were unfurled when the team was revealed. It needed a double check though. Smith at fullback, Waisake Naholo and Rieko Ioane on the wings, Jack Goodhue at centre, Crotty at second-five and Beauden Barrett as backline director outside Aaron Smith. That’s a backline choking with talented specialists to make the Wallabies even more fretful about their chances of overturning 15 years of Trans-Tasman bragging rights. Don’t confuse delight about the selection with excessive confidence about the result in Sydney. That would be a reckless move because the Wallabies are a much better side than last season but there’s enough about the All Blacks to see them aiming for another trophy retention next week at Eden Park. Half of the side is in Super Rugby winning form and will bring that mentality to the fray after the messy June internationals with France. The task will be tougher with the Wallabies showing how much they had improved with their connected form and stronger game management in a narrow series defeat to Ireland in June. Israel Folau and Will Genia drive the backline sting and David Pocock’s return to the loose forwards has amped up the presence from the pack. The side’s skills and fitness have been overhauled under former All Blacks guru Mick Byrne and they showed against Ireland, a resilience which had been AWOL for a while. Michael Hooper has been reinstated as captain after a lengthy rest to heal his hamstring but his timing will get a serious workout,

while the All Blacks have to test the defensive reads from Reece Hodge and Kurtley Beale in the outside channels as much as they can. That’s where this All Black selection should gather most profit — with the feel they will have for their specialist duties, the gaps they can create with their passing and the pace on the flanks. Goodhue may be a rookie test centre but his instincts are as sound as Conrad Smith’s when he farewelled the group after the 2015 World Cup. Since then the role has been filled by Malakai Fekitoa, George Moala, Anton Lienert-Brown and Crotty with a range of success. But the solid specialist precision from Goodhue in the 13 jersey offers more threat with the wise tailgating direction of Ben Smith and the venom from Naholo and Ioane on the wings.

It’s enough to give the Wallabies whiteboard headaches without the practical confrontations at ANZ Stadium in Sydney. Injury defections from senior centres Tevita Kuridrani and Samu Kerevi have hurt them and while Hodge is a competent player, if he has to deal with repeated onslaughts through the middle of the park, his defensive unity with Beale, Folau and his wings will be stretched. Optimism is part of the Wallaby fabric and was for the last two years before they were belted twice in Bledisloe beginnings in Sydney. Belief has replaced hope this time and with some foundation from their showings against the world No. 2 side Ireland. However, thinking they can win is like believing the Lions would take out the Super Rugby title. - NZME

Wallabies skipper ready for injury return Wallabies captain Michael Hooper plans to “come out blazing” but concedes he may not last the full 80 minutes of tonight’s Bledisloe Cup clash with the All Blacks in Sydney. Cheika off to NRL? Wallabies’ coach Michael Cheika has been linked to a move to the NRL. Writing in the Sydney Morning Herald, Andrew Webster said many believe Cheika might look to the rival code when his contract ends with Aussie rugby at the end of next year’s World Cup in Japan. Cheika comes from a league background, playing the game for Marcellin College at Randwick before switching to rugby for Randwick and the Wallabies. ‘’He continues to have a genuine synergy with league, swapping ideas with leading NRL coaches and players. Dolcetto chasing Tarzino spot Levin trainer Sylvia Kay is hoping a bold performance at Waverley today will be enough to sneak Dolcetto into the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) at Hastings in a fortnight. Dolcetto is currently lying 21st equal in order of entry into the weight-for-age feature, which is limited to 16 starters, and he also holds nominations for the Gr.1 Windsor Park Plate (1600m) on September 22 and the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m) on October 6. “I’d like to do all three big ones at Hastings,” Kay said. “He did the three days when he started off racing.” Kay was referring to Dolcetto winning his second race in his third start on Tarzino Trophy day two years ago when beating the subsequent dual Group Three winner and Gr.1 VRC Oaks (2500m) placegetter Eleonora then finishing second to the rising star Francaletta on the second and third days of the 2016 Hawke’s Bay Spring Carnival. Dolcetto carried on to be unbeaten in his next five starts, culminating in his defeat of Group One winner Authentic Paddy in the Gr.3 Metric Mile (1550m) at Awapuni last September. The Per Incanto gelding resumed with a fourth at Trentham in June and didn’t start again until late last month when second to Rosewood over 1200m at Awapuni. District Attendance Officer We are seeking to employ a District Attendance Officer 20 hours per week during the school term. This role involves working with, and supporting, young people (and their families) with the goal of re-engaging the young person back into regular attendance at school. We are seeking a creative and motivated photographer. This is a casual position covering occasional evenings and every other weekend – on rotation with another photographer. Approximately 10 – 20 hours a fortnight. The position is to cover local events and news stories providing photographs for a range of Ashburton Guardian publications. Experience in photographing people on location is essential as is an ability to relate easily to people of all ages. You will need to have a passion for the local community, including sports. The ideal candidate must be able to work as a team member in a creative group environment and work solo, requiring self motivation and prioritisation of tasks. They must be able to follow tight deadlines and directions but also be able to improvise and be creative. Good verbal, written communication and organisational skills are essential.
