Sharplin track delays disappoint BY LINDA CLARKE

Frustration is mounting over the continued closure of the Sharplin Falls walking track. The Department of Conservation closed the popular track in February last year because of falling rocks, but progress to get it open again has been slow. The Mt Somers Walkway Society, which helps DOC manage nearby Mt Somers track, wants to take over remediation work so the falls can be accessible again for locals and tourists. It is a short and pretty walk, popular with families. Walkway society chairman Barry Austin said society members voiced their concerns over the continued closure to DOC at their annual meeting this week. “We

expressed our utter frustration with the lack of progress and the uncertainty of its future.” He said DOC did not want walkway members to take over the falls track, which was up to “great walk” status and is considered suitable for people with little tramping experience. On such tracks, it was not an option simply to have a sign in the rock fall area advising that people not loiter there. A warning sign has been in the area for 15 years, but DOC closed the track in 2015 after a rock fall destroyed part of the gantry structure. DOC is awaiting the release of a full report from a geological engineer who scaled the face where the rocks were loose, before proceeding with repairs. The

whole area is part of the southern Alpine fault system. Austin said the Mt Somers community had written to Conservation Minister Maggie Barry in an attempt to get repairs moving, but had no joy. There are also concerns that people are still using the track, despite the closed signs. Austin urged locals to keep out as DOC could remove the gantry altogether, which would create even more obstacles to the track being re-opened. He said tourists looking for an easy and scenic walk, not far off the beaten highway, could be bypassing the area and the community missing a revenue opportunity. There had been tourists who had turned up to walk to the falls, but found the track closed and left disappointed.
