several months pending yesterday’s sentencing appearance on charges of kidnapping, abandoning a child, dishonestly taking a motor vehicle and a mountain bike, dangerous driving and driving while suspended.

Judge Joanna Maze convicted him on all matters and sent him to jail for 21 months, saying there was no alternative to a custodial sentence.

Rough season for fairy terns One of New Zealand’s most endangered birds has had a rough breeding season in Northland, with only six fairy tern chicks surviving from 31 eggs. New Zealand fairy terns, also known as tara-iti, only exist in Northland, with only about 40 alive. They are found across the coastal areas of Mangawhai, Waipu, Pakiri, South Kaipara, and nest on exposed, shell-covered sand areas of beach. “It was a really difficult season,” said Heather Rogan, the convenor of the New Zealand Fairy Tern Trust. She said storms affected survival, with five chicks from Mangawhai and only one from Papakanui that survived.

Rudd likes to play urinal tricks Ant-Man star Paul Rudd has bad bathroom behaviour – he likes to play urinal pranks on his friends. The actor’s I Love You, Man co-star Jason Segel spent a lot of time with Rudd while they were making and promoting the 2009 film and became a close friend – and the subject of the quirky funnyman’s toilet tricks, like dropping his trousers and underwear to his ankles “like a 10-year-old boy” as he stands to pee. Sheep ‘rodeo’ A video of two Tauranga boys trying to ride their pet sheep has gone viral with millions of viewers enjoying their antics. The massive reaction has stunned Sally and Phillip Steiner whose sons (pictured) Oliver, 3, and James, 7, have become internet celebrities. And it all started when Mrs Steiner heard screaming and laughing out on the paddocks of their farm.

When the boys came inside she discovered they had been riding Dotty and Sinead. The two boys were at it again the next day, this time with mum watching and filming. The results were two short videos filmed last Sunday that she sent to a couple of friends and then put up on the family’s Facebook page and loaded on to YouTube. It gathered at least three million views prompting BuzzFeed to write about it. It has been viewed more than five million times on TeenTimes and a couple of million on The LAD Bible. “I thought it was funny, but I did not expect the response it got, it’s amazing,” Mrs Steiner said.

Film awards postponed A lack of nominees has seen this year’s local movie awards postponed until next year.

The New Zealand Film Awards, also known as the Moas, has been held since 2012 and celebrates the best Kiwi films released over the past year. But this year organisers said there simply hadn’t been enough movies released to warrant an awards ceremony.

Organisers Ant Timpson and Hugh Sundae said they didn’t want to host an inferior show. “Last year was an incredible year for New Zealand film and we had numerous narrative features nominated,” said Timpson. “This year we easily could have ploughed on with less nominees but ... we’d never put on a show that didn’t meet our own high standards.” Usually held in December, Timpson says the ceremony will now be held in mid-2016 to allow a stronger mix of films to feature. Last year’s awards were swept up by The Dark Horse.

District-wide vote all powerful

If a Canterbury-wide vote gave the nod to an amalgamation of local authorities, Ashburton could be powerless to resist, says Ashburton mayor Angus McKay. He was commenting on the vote down of Labour MP Stuart Nash’s private member’s bill that would have given a local authority the power to say no to an amalgamation that could force it to join with several other local authorities.

Since 2012 an amalgamation vote is taken district-wide

and a majority would see it to pass. In its purest sense, an individual local authority area could not vote itself out of an amalgamation if the districtwide majority was in support, but the reality was this simply would not happen, Mr McKay said.

“I don’t see any danger at all in this; in Canterbury amalgamation is simply not going to happen.”

At the recent Local Government New Zealand conference, local government minister Paula Bennett made it clear that amalgamation should not

be a focus for councils; creating stronger local economies should, he said.

“Yes, amalgamation can happen anywhere at any time but she gave a very clear direction that she doesn’t want councils worrying about amalgamation, she wants us to get on and do our jobs.

“The energy that some people put into amalgamation is enormous and she said she firmly believes that effort was far better spent by getting better contracts, economic strategies and good guidelines for the future.”

Ms Bennett’s message was very clear – control your expenditure and think strategically about how your structures support growth. Ratepayers were not willing to pay for more services while they saw waste, Mr McKay said.

“She believes we need to call time on what has been a relentless focus on how many mayors we have or for bureaucrats to decide what our local democracy looks like.”

Ms Bennett said it was crucial councils started looking at growth across regions. Their current structures were not

Robotic champs headed for nationals

The idea of creating a fully functioning robot in just a few days sounds like something straight out of a sci-fi movie.

However for three Year 7 pupils at Ashburton Intermediate School, it was no big deal.

The talented trio of R.J. Pasion, Brontson Cudmore, and Harry Trumper are headed to the national Robocup competition in Christchurch after taking out the rescue section at the regional level.

Their clever creation, nicknamed Harry 2.0, is a robotic buggy that took just three hours to put together and a week to programme.

Board opts for eight-weekly meetings

Methven Community Board members have lost the “ideal time frame” between meetings after accepting a recommendation from the Ashburton District Council.

At their six-weekly meeting yesterday, members were faced with changing the time frame to four-weekly or eight-weekly, in order to fit in with a new council meeting structure.

Board members considered four-weekly would be too soon and, after discussion, supported eight-weekly with the option of a workshop or extraordinary meeting in between.

“Six weeks is an ideal time frame for us to have a meeting,” chairwoman Liz McMillan said as discussion opened on the issue.

Board member Dan McLaughlin said the wheels on board decisions were already

“very slow”, and eight-weekly meetings could slow that down further. “It would be almost too painful to be fair,” Mr McLaughlin said.

Councillor and board member Alan Totty and council staff member Paul Brake talked about the implications and benefits of workshops and extraordinary meetings being able to be held at the fourweekly interval between the eight-weekly meetings, and

strategically or cohesively supporting that, however and that was why the government and local government commission would work with each region to develop structures that linked up crucial services like transport, water and economic development, he said.

“Ashburton is already ahead of the play in this area. We’re working closely with three districts to the south on tendering road maintenance contracts, on being a major player in water issues and playing a leading role in employment opportunities to build economic growth.”

From P1 Rimene collected another associate before driving to an address in Allenton, where he parked across a driveway. He then paced up and down in front of the house brandishing two knives and yelling at the occupants of the dwelling, demanding money and jewellery.

He attempted to climb in a window, threatening to harm the woman. The victim gave him $25 which was all she had available.

Rimene believed the woman had been selling drugs to young people, however, he discovered he had the wrong person. He handed the money back and left in the vehicle he arrived in.

Two armed police officers were waiting for him on the street, however, Rimene failed to stop and drove into the back of a car which had paused at a give way sign, damaging both vehicles.

The associate then jumped out of the car and Rimene sped off. He abandoned the vehicle on a nearby street, leaving the baby and the dog behind.

After hiding in bushes until the coast was clear Rimene left on a misappropriated mountain bike and was later arrested at a Racecourse Road address.

The child and dog were unharmed, however the victim of the kidnapping was traumatised by the event.

Judge Maze remitted fines of $5000 in exchange for 14 days’ imprisonment to be served concurrently and cancelled an existing community work sentence.

Freedoms curtailed

A drug-fuelled crime spree spanning several weeks resulted in three young men having their freedom curtailed following sentencing appearances in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Jamie Ryan Hamilton, 21, and Joshua Grey-Schumacher, 17, were jointly charged with dishonestly taking nine motor vehicles, three of unlawfully getting into motor vehicles, arson, theft from vehicles and burglary. The charges related to crimes committed between November last year and April.

Hamilton’s lawyer Michelle Barrell said her client was dependent on illegal drugs at the time of the offending and was

also dealing with personal issues. The crimes were committed to fund his drug addiction.

In many cases the vehicles were damaged and one was torched.

Twice vehicles were parked and locked with the intention of retrieving them later.

The burglary charges related to thefts from a local motor camp and breaking into a shipping container at Lake Hood.

The court was told Hamilton had previously worked for the business and knew where the key to the container was hidden. The pair also broke into a local dairy.

Ms Barrell acknowledged Hamilton’s similar offending in 2013, which also involved a

spate of vehicle thefts.

Judge Maze sentenced him to two years and three months imprisonment, saying there were no other options given his record of offending.

She was more lenient with Grey-Schumacher, taking his age and lack of criminal history into account, before handing down a nine-month term of home detention with a stern warning: “If you are tempted to conclude you have any options about a term of home detention, remember that the alternative will be 21 months imprisonment.”

Tyler Daniel Croll-Davis, 21, was sentenced for a series of unrelated charges including

unlawfully entering vehicles, burglaries, driving while disqualified, sustained loss of traction, receiving stolen property and breaching a community work sentence.

He too admitted his offending was driven by his drug dependency.

Croll-Davis has been in custody for four months and his lawyer Roz Burnside asked Judge Maze to consider time served, with the possibility of an electronically monitored sentence.

However, he was returned to prison to serve the remainder of the nine-month sentence Judge Maze handed down.

Croll-Davis was also disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Chess whizzes await finals trip news Four young chess whizzes from Longbeach School are anxiously waiting to find out if they’ll be winging their way to Auckland after taking out a local competition.

The tournament saw 44 players from primary, intermediate, and secondary schools converge on Roncalli College for a busy day of competition.

The winning Longbeach School team is now waiting to hear whether they will qualify for a tournament in Auckland.

It was a successful competition for Longbeach School, with the Year 7 and 8 team consisting of Rueben Taylor, Dante Vannini, and Ethan Walsh taking out second place in their category.

Man hit by car An 87-year-old man is in a critical condition after being hit by a car in the Dunedin suburb of Fairfield last night. A St John spokeswoman said an ambulance was called after a report of a car hitting a pedestrian on the corner of Flower Street and Main South Road about 7pm. The ambulance took the man to Dunedin Hospital and his condition deteriorated from serious to critical. Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said the serious crash unit was investigating and a section of the road had been blocked.

Two cut from car Two injured people have been freed from a car after a twovehicle crash in central Wellington last night. Emergency services were called to the incident on the corner of Kent Terrace and Pirie Street about 8.20pm. A Fire Service spokesman said two people, initially trapped in their car, were extricated by firefighters.

He said one person with moderate injuries and another with minor injuries were now in the care of the Wellington Free Ambulance.

Extradition bid The Chinese authorities are pressing New Zealand to extradite a non-Chinese resident from New Zealand to face unknown charges in China, Prime Minister John Key revealed yesterday at his postCabinet press conference. Mr Key was being questioned about whether New Zealand was having the same problem as the United States, where Chinese agents have been working to put pressure on expatriate Chinese to return home immediately. Many of the agents’ targets are wanted for corruption after arriving in the US with “illgotten gains”. The US does not have an extradition treaty with China; nor does New Zealand. Mr Key said New Zealand had not sent anyone back to China, but added “there is an individual they want extradited but it is not for reasons around finances”. “It is not a money issue. Teen hurt in hit and run A teenage cyclist’s leg was badly injured in a hit and run in Christchurch. Police are now calling for witnesses to the crash at the entrance to the Pak ‘n Save supermarket on Wainoni Road on Saturday, August 8. Senior Constable Peter Carrington said an 18-year-old man was cycling south on the road between 9.15pm and 10.15pm when a black Toyota, possibly a Corolla, turned in to the supermarket car park in front of him.

‘Absolutely fabulous afternoon’ A wintry Sunday afternoon in Ashburton was made that much more exciting with a new spin on a well-known game.

Ashburton’s St Andrew’s Church held a fundraiser with a difference on the weekend, where contestants played It’s in the Box – a game of a similar format to the late Selwyn Toogood’s It’s in the Bag television show.

Host Bernard Egan asked participants selected from the audience a couple of questions before inviting them to choose a numbered box for which they then had to bargain for its contents.

Church convener Maureen Maginness said around 56 people turned up and everyone had a ball.

“It was an absolutely fabulous afternoon, it was so good,” she said.

Tickets were $10 and included afternoon tea.

A local bowel cancer survivor has criticised the Government for its failure to be proactive about bowel cancer screening.

This comes on the back of the Ministry of Health not recommending at home bowel screening tests.

The at home do-it-yourself tests are provided by Green Cross Health, and detect traces of blood that may be released from bowel diseases, such as cancer or pre-cancerous polyps in the bowel motion.

Ministry of Health bowel cancer programme clinical director Dr Susan Parry said the use of faecal occult blood tests by people not displaying symptoms was not recommended in New Zealand outside of the Waitemata District Health Board bowel screening pilot.

This type of screening does not include a symptomatic approach to the screening test, diagnosis and treatment or consistent support for people who purchase the kits, Ms Parry said.

“Also people with symptoms may be falsely reassured by a negative test.”

New Zealand and bowel cancer survivor Rachel Holdaway questioned what New Zealanders were meant to do if they want to be proactive about their health.

“New Zealand has some of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world, yet we are not doing anything to address it,” Ms Holdaway said.

“It’s exceedingly frustrating.”

Bowel Cancer New Zealand chairwoman Mary Bradley said the organisation supported the use of commercial kits for people aged over 50 with no family history or symptoms, due to the fact there was no national screening in place.

“Bowel cancer is one of the most preventable, treatable and beatable cancers if diagnosed early which is what is so important about screening,” Ms Bradley said.

“Bowel Cancer NZ would ask what would the Ministry have New Zealanders do who want to be screened for bowel cancer and don’t live in the pilot area?”

Currently 1200 people die of bowel cancer nationally every year, resulting in New Zealand having the highest rates of bowel cancer and bowel cancer deaths in the developed world.

Unsupervised children running riot in cafes and restaurants might rile other patrons but the greater risk is the health and safety issue they create for staff, say Ashburton hospitality business owners.

Over recent weeks there have been a raft of complaints from cafes and restaurants around New Zealand where unruly children had upset other diners.

While Ashburton wasn’t immune to parents who allowed children to run riot while they dined, there was a serious health and safety risk from potential accidents with staff carrying dishes of hot food, said Speight’s manager Mark Milmine.

“Generally the kids we see in here are fairly well behaved but parents need to be aware that staff carrying hot meals or three or four plates can’t put out a hand if there’s a child running towards them,” he said.

As a family oriented restaurant, Speight’s had to walk a fine line between providing a family-friendly atmosphere while still ensuring the dining environment was pleasant for other diners, Mr Milmine said.

“Overall we’re pretty lucky but you do get the odd problem and parents do need to be mindful of what their children are doing.

“Safety is definitely the big issue and the odd time we’ve had to ask a parent to keep an eye on their children. It also

often follows that if one child runs around then they all want to run around.”

Robbies’ owner Nigel Joyce said on occasion he’s had to ask parents to keep an eye on their children who were running around the restaurant or because babies were crawling around the floor under wait staff feet.

Other customers were quick to let you know if children were creating a problem in the restaurant, he said and if that happened, a discreet word to parents usually sorted the problem out.

“Most are a bit embarrassed when you say something.”

Families are big business at the Somerset Grocer and while most youngsters were well behaved there was inevitably the

odd issue with children running around the shop disturbing other patrons, said manager Nicky Milmine.

Like other hospitality business managers, Mrs Milmine said her concerns focused as much on the safety of those children from hot food as it did on customer disturbance.

“We love having children in here, but they do have to be under their parents’ control.”

A Timaru café owner saw the worst of out of control children over the weekend when a garden was destroyed by youngsters who ran riot while their parents sat inside dining.

She took to Facebook and received a flood of responses supporting her concerns and criticising parents who let their youngsters run wild.

Drink driving ‘stupidity’ Police have slammed the “stupidity” of Otago motorists who drove dunk in atrocious weather over the weekend. Otago police coastal area prevention manager Inspector Mel Aitken said 17 people were caught driving over the breath alcohol limit between Friday and Sunday. The drivers, aged 19 to 69, had breath alcohol readings of between 250mcg – the legal limit – and 935mcg.

“It is highly disappointing that people are prepared to take risks, as well as putting other road users in jeopardy,” Ms Aitken said.

“Furthermore, Saturday night’s weather was atrocious, so the fact that drivers would choose to drive intoxicated in such conditions adds to the stupidity and poor judgment of those apprehended.”

Cows on road Two cars were badly damaged when they hit a herd of escapee cows on a rural Canterbury road yesterday. Inspector Corrie Parnell said police were called to the scene of the accident of Feredays Road, Leeston, about 5.45am yesterday. He said both cars had hit a herd of cows that had escaped from a nearby paddock.

Fortunately neither of the motorists were injured, but their cars were badly damaged, he said.

Person in river Hamilton police are searching the Waikato River for a person they believe may have jumped in yesterday. Waikato police Senior Sergeant Juliet Burgess said they received a call from a member of the public about 12.30pm yesterday saying they saw a woman jump from the cliff of the eastern side of the river, just north of the Cobham Bridge. Ms Burgess said they were still trying to confirm further details but they sent officers to the scene and put the police boat in the water to look for the woman.

Horse enthusiast dies A mother-of-two and horse enthusiast has died after a fall from a horse in North Canterbury.

Nicola Pellett, 47, died as a result of an accident on August 11. Fairfax reported the death was as a result of a fall from a horse at North Canterbury’s Mandeville sports grounds, near her Swannanoa home. She has been remembered as a “dearly loved wife... and devoted mother” to two sons.

Another death notice said “I hope you are riding magnificent horses in the clouds above us.” “You were taken from us far too soon and will be deeply missed.” A funeral was held yesterday.

Emergency services kept busy with two crashes Two separate car crashes kept emergency service crews busy over the weekend.

A two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Grove Street and Wilkin Street in Tinwald on Saturday morning saw two men hospitalised with

Hore, of Patearoa, appeared in the Alexandra District Court yesterday before Judge Michael Crosbie on the charge, which is connected to a duckshooting incident on May 2 this year where a man almost lost an arm. The 36-year-old was remanded on bail until September 17.

Man’s sad death on work visa When Manjit Singh came to Australia on a 457 visa in 2006, he thought his promised $800 a week salary would allow him to support his family in India and build a life.

Instead, he found himself sleeping in the restaurant’s storeroom, malnourished and working 16-hour days with little pay, an inquest has heard.

After almost a decade presiding over inquests, Deputy State Coroner Hugh Dillon said the 33-year-old’s 2011 death from the complications of tuberculosis was one of the saddest stories he has ever heard.

“This case is a 21st century retelling of (George Orwell’s) story of How the Poor Die,” he said.

The inquest heard Manjit arrived in Australia on a 457 visa, his application was sponsored

by Anmol Holdings - trading as North Indian Flavour in Darlinghurst - and was signed by its manager Gurjit Singh.

and that Manjit would be paid $43,000 per year.

But Manjit later told the Australian Federal Police (AFP) the reality was completely different.

According to his statement to officers, he was required to work from 8am until midnight, seven days a week.

He slept in the restaurant’s storeroom at night, was locked inside the restaurant and had limited food to eat, no mobile or internet access and had no shower or bath. “(He was) required to bathe using a jug and the tap in the

public toilet,” Mr Dillon said.

Over the two years he worked there, Manjit said he was paid three lots of $300.

Meanwhile a $12,000 loan his father transferred into his new boss’s bank account allegedly disappeared.

Although Manjit stopped working for Gurjit Singh in 2008, by May 2009 he was malnourished, and working part time in restaurants in Crows Nest and North Ryde, while applying for bridging and protection visas.

Nurses who cared for him in 2009 tried to get help from

charities, but as he was not an Australian citizen this was largely unsuccessful.

He was described in the outpatient notes as having no money and not being able to feed himself or pay for housing, Mr Dillon said.

By August 2011 his once-latent tuberculosis had flared up and part of his right lung was described as “unsalvageable” and removed.

He died as a result of surgery on August 26.

“His hopes of providing for his family in India or perhaps establishing a new life in Australia had turned to dust,” Mr Dillon said.

“The loneliness of his death in one of the richest countries in the world is desolating.”

Mr Dillon recommended the NSW Minister for Health and the Minister for Immigration have their departments work together to find the best policy for ensuring the health and welfare of temporary visa holders who are subject to TB health undertakings.

More drone flights The US military will drastically increase drone flights over the next four years, in a bid to boost intelligence and strike capabilities across a growing number of conflict zones, the Wall Street Journal reports. The Pentagon is planning to expand the number of daily flights from 61 at present to as many as 90 by 2019, a senior defence official said. The move represents the first significant increase in the controversial US drone program since 2011, reflecting the rise in global hotspots. Dining out and behaving badly Sue Newman

hen it comes to dining out, it doesn’t take much to turn a pleasurable experience into one you’d rather forget.

And that has nothing to do with the food you’re eating, the wine you’re drinking or the attentiveness or not of the wait staff.

It has everything to do with your fellow diners. No one wants to sit next to a table of drunken buffoons, to a quarrelling couple or to a group breaking the sound barrier with conversation levels. And no one wants to sit next to or even in the same room as children who are behaving badly.

It’s fantastic to see families eating out with their kids and most restaurants go out of their way to ensure they’re child friendly both in menu and in providing appropriate seating and often some form of passive entertainment.

And most mums and dads go out of their way to ensure their youngsters are aware that dining out is a treat, and that other diners need to be treated with respect.

Unfortunately some do not.

We’ve all experienced an evening ruined by children running out of control, screaming and yelling and treating a restaurant like a playground while their parents continue, unfazed, with their meal.

There have been several stories in the media recently where children wreaked havoc while mum and dad wined and dined. Unfortunately, in almost every case if fellow diners complained or if the boss stepped in, they were seen as the bad guys, the parents cry foul and child-friendly organisations leaped to their defence.

Parents have every right to dine out with their children, but other diners have the right to enjoy a meal without the accompaniment of a screaming child or one running from one side of the restaurant to the other.

Even good kids go bad on occasion; if it’s your occasion, do the decent thing, control your child or take it home.

YOUR VIEW Dairying – services and banks Re your article about dairy farms, vets offering support, getting handouts and help from services and banks not clamping down.

Maybe if all contractors, vets and farming services cut some of their ridiculous charges by like, 25 per cent, especially mileage charges that are out of control, this would help not only the dairy farmers but everyone.

This includes small animal owners, pet owners and lifestyle block holders who, by the way, still get in vets as they love and care for their animals, not just the money they bring in.

3. Vet rules also about not being able to sell some of the normal non-dangerous drugs like penicillin, etc over the counter without a visit is a rip-off. It is just money grabbing, especially when they know the customer is a long time farm.

4. All other farmers/small block owners have had to pay the prices of services, contractors, land etc as dairy farmers have pushed the prices of everything up as they have had the big incomes, so they just paid.

5. Now this has just levelled out the playing field for everyone.

s the New Zealand dairy industry has expanded rapidly in recent years so too has the dairy support farms.

These dairy support farms may be grazing heifers, calves, carry overs, winter cows, or growing winter feed crops and supplements.

So what is the dairy downturn going to mean for the dairy support farmer?

This is an important question which needs to be given some serious thought by both sides of the industry.

Already we have seen many dairy animals not go to the previously arranged winter feed.

Thankfully for those farmers who had grown this feed, the Mainland drought and North Island floods meant there was an alternative option to sell it.

As dairy farmers trim costs many are also reducing cow numbers which in turn means less animals need to be retained and possibly young stock could now be grazed on the dairy platform.

So less stock to be grazed and reduced feed supplies required by dairy farmers, will see dairy support farmers having to review their farm policies.

I doubt dairy farmers will see reduced grazing as motivation

Dairy support farmers play an important role in dairy farming and some thought needs to be given to their needs.

to continue grazing with the alternative beef option particularly buoyant and profitable at present.

The strength of beef and the favourable outlook going forward, will be seen by many dairy support farmers who have lost dairy stock as the logical policy to follow.

This policy change would then pose another question.

Is there sufficient young beef

stock to meet an increasing demand?

Will the dairy downturn and hopefully lower milk powder prices with buoyant demand for beef animals, see rearers and possibly dairy farmers rearing more dairy beef calves?

For dairy farmers to rear significant numbers of dairy beef calves will require a major mindset change from every possible drop of milk in the vat

to one of assessing all possible revenue streams from their herd.

If we do see a swing to more beef being farmed and there’s no evident lift in the numbers of young stock reared, the competition for replacement stock will be intense which will affect margins for beef farmers.

Another factor regarding dairy support is the importance of respective parties to discuss any possible changes, while coming to agreement on what is changing and how that transition occurs.

Should these discussions not occur and a one sided abrupt change happens, the aggrieved farmer, from whichever side because it does happen both ways, will often never enter a similar arrangement again.

It is important for all to weigh up where they might want to be when the dairy industry returns to business as usual.

That way, you don’t lose good relationships which may be beneficial in the future.

Base milk price questioned

BY SUZE METHERELL AND PAUL MCBETH Fonterra Co-operative Group’s earnings have declined since the current milk price calculation was introduced and are lagging behind that of the regulator’s notional producer, raising questions about the setting of the base milk price.

The Commerce Commission wants more comparative information to help build its aggregate assessment of Fonterra’s milk price calculation due to a lack of readily available data without substantial investment by the dairy exporter’s NZMP ingredients brands unit, the regulator said in its draft report on the 2014/15 milk price.

The regulator expects Fonterra’s actual performance to be lower than that of a notional producer due to the product mix, and analysis comparing the dairy company’s normalised earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation per kilogram of

Fonterra improved its transparency with the information it provided the regulator, and a number of issues hanging over from the previous season, such as energy and the treatment of fixed asset capital costs, have been resolved, Begg said. Progress has been made on Fonterra’s weighted average cost of capital (wacc), but the regulator wants more information to better understand the dairy exporter’s asset beta, which measures the company’s exposure to market volatility.

Reward schemes ‘can be less than impressive’

BY JOHN WEEKES AND SOPHIE RYAN A new study says the glitz and glamour some credit card reward schemes promise is often unrealistic.

Consumer NZ compared local credit card reward schemes and said most offered fairly disappointing returns.

“Credit card reward schemes are heavily promoted, luring customers with the promise of free flights and money to spend on shopping sprees,” Consumer reported.

“But unless you’re a big spender, the rewards you earn can be less than impressive.”

Consumer compared 29 cards to see which gave the most rewards for a spend of $25,000 over two years.

In the best case, Consumer said a good card would give someone “enough rewards points to enjoy a small treat”.

But in a worst-case scenario, high annual fees would leave the credit card owner with virtually nothing.

“When we last looked at these schemes in 2011, the returns they offered were disappointing.

Not much has changed,” Consumer reported.

The study said even when a person spent $25,000 over two years, none of the cards tested would pay for a $600 return flight from Auckland to Sydney.

“When we deducted the cost of annual fees to get the net

value, eight cards resulted in a negative return,” Consumer added.

Consumer said people had to “spend big” to earn decent rewards.

“Don’t spend just to earn a few extra points: the returns aren’t worth it. These schemes only make sense if you earn points as part of your regular purchases.

If you’re selecting a rewards card, make sure you take the annual fees into account. High fees can quickly erode the value of the points earned.”

The study said high card fees meant earning points to buy goods could be less than rewarding.

“Eight of the 19 cards that offered shopping voucher rewards had a negative net value,” Consumer reported.

Rewards depended in many cases on card fees, and how and where cards were used.

Awards executive chairman Gavin Roden said the share farmer competition is a hybrid of the sharemilker competition, with changes that better position it within the dairy industry’s evolving farm ownership and employment structures.

“We think the changes will make the contest better and enable more people to enter and gain the benefits from entering,” Mr Roden said.

“The sharemilker competition has a special history and aura about it due to its 26-year longevity, the thousands that have entered over the years and how it has helped people take the next step in their farming careers.”

Mr Roden said the number of sharemilking positions is falling as dairy farm ownership and employment structures evolve. This is creating new opportunities for people in the industry to progress through other employment structures, such as equity partnerships,

leasing or contract milking.

“With the share farmer contest and all the changes we have made to the 2016 awards programme, we have tried to ensure that those in similar positions, doing similar work and with similar responsibilities will have an opportunity to participate and gain the benefits from entering one of our competitions,” Mr Roden said.

The new competition will be open to all those that are self-employed on a dairy farm and who are responsible for all aspects of the farm business. They can own up to 50 per cent of that farming business.

Contract milkers – whose income is received on an agreed cents per kilogram of milksolids produced – are eligible to enter. Percentage sharemilkers, equity farmers and lessees are also eligible.

Entries in the 2016 Share Farmer of the Year, Dairy Manager of the Year and Dairy Trainee of the Year competitions open on October 20.

Synlait founder setting up dairy go

Synlait founder and central Canterbury dairy farmer Ben Dingle is setting up a large fully integrated dairy goat milk business in Australia.

Mr Dingle quit Synlait Farms (the company in control of the initial dairy farms bought to supply Synlait Milk) recently and has quietly been setting up a vertically integrated private company that will control and own all aspects of production from farm to processing.

His compancy, Nuchev, plans to develop state-of-the-art dairy goat farming and milk processing facilities in the Geelong region.

Mr Dingle said he was excited to bring new opportunities to the Victorian farming region and he hoped Nuchev would become an integral part of the rural fabric of the area.

Construction of the milking facilities will begin later this year, subject to planning and environmental approvals. When completed next year, the milking facilities will accommodate 5000 dairy goats.

The spray-drying milk processing operation will be finished by 2017.

Mr Dingle believes there will be a rapidly emerging demand for nutritious goat milk products and plans to eventually grow more than 30,000 goats and process more than 6000 tonnes per year of powdered milk products.

It was understood Ms Maclean wanted the Chinese owners to buy more farms and there had been disagreements over shortterm goals.

Mr Dingle’s investment in the goat milk industry follows the

expanding demand for goat milk world-wide with plans recently unveiled in Ashburton to establish a formula processing plant.

The New Zealand Dairy Collaborative Group (NZDCG) and its major shareholder Fineboon will establish a formula processing plant at the Ashburton Business Estate.

The product will be exported to China.

Currently North Island dairy goat farmers are receiving up to $16 per kilogram of milksolids for goat milk.

MARKET REPORT Dairy More rain is predicted for the region this week as soil moisture levels improve and temperatures lift, and the Opuha Dam is refilling fast and more to come with the foothills full of snow.

The drought areas are still struggling, and in the worst areas only a small percentage of previous stock numbers have returned back home to depleted pastures.

The government has increased its contribution to the support services as drought recovery is estimated to take at least a couple of years.

Calving of dairy cows is now starting in earnest, and many farmers are culling late calving cows as they destock to a mainly pasture-only diet.

More bobby calves are being raised as managers lift the importance of beef in their farms portfolio, and AI specialists warn that it is false economy to return to natural mating.

The reality of the market situation is now ramping home; the new dairy catch-cry is “managing the loss” as the predicted payout is the lowest since 2002 and costs since then have increased by $1/kg ms and debt doubled.

Fonterra has cut the volumes to be sold via the auction and two other participants have withdrawn completely. Questions are building on the suitability of this selling method in such a weak market.

Pavilion 10 years in the making

F

ew major projects happen in Ashburton without extensive debate and often with heated exchanges.

None would illustrate this more than a pavilion in the Ashburton Domain Oval that today remains only in the memory of a few.

There had been earlier pavilions – one built by the Swimming Club near the baths and another in the oval, much added to and described as “The wretched shed, or rather, shed and a half now disfiguring the sports ground, and which is ridiculously styled a pavilion”.

The idea for something more appropriate came from Ashburton solicitor Charles Purnell.

With Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee approaching in 1897 he objected to the existing proposals – a new site for the old men’s home or a convalescent ward at the hospital, proposing instead “a new pavilion that would be of benefit to the inhabitants of both town and country”.

Debate and discussion ensued, other sites such as Baring Square were proposed until Victoria was dead and in 1902 there was a coronation to memorialise instead.

Eventually a range of proposals was adopted, from a drinking fountain in Baring Square to a pavilion and grandstand in the oval, depending on the amount the public would contribute. But debate became entangled with the need to provide a memorial to Boer War soldiers. The coronation year came and went with no memorial, but eventually the coronation of Edward VII was marked with wrought iron gates leading into the domain.

A pavilion remained on the agenda of many. It took several years and the backing of the Ashburton Athletics’ Association, but eventually opinion swung in its favour. However, debate carried on for many years, largely over methods of funding and the type of building – simple pavilion, band

rotunda or pavilion with grandstand on top.

Eventually this last idea won out. A public meeting was held to discuss the proposal and the raising of a loan of £1000.

Only seven people turned up.

There were plenty prepared to criticise in public, but few who were prepared to take part in discussions. A poll was proposed, the few at the public meeting voted against it but the mayor decided it was necessary.

When it was held 243 voted and most were in favour of raising the loan.

A competition was held among architects for a grandstand and pavilion to seat 500, have a large dining room, kitchen, meeting rooms and two refreshment booths. Three designs came forward and councillors quickly accepted one that was “artistic as well as useful”, designed by Albert Ager.

In September 1906, almost 10 years after the project was first proposed, the tender of Benjamin Ager for £880 was accepted. While the building was being erected there was continuing criticism of its design and when, on February

7, 1907, it was opened, apathy continued to reign, with only 25 turning up to the ceremony, and that figure included 17 officials, although the opening was followed by a sports meeting.

The building continued to receive little use, with some sports groups having the right to use it and lock others out,

but it continued to grace the oval and be used on major occasions until, on the night of Saturday September 14, 1946, fire broke out in the 40-yearold building. Thanks to the fire brigade the damage was not as great as may have been expected. The grandstand was badly damaged, but only one corner

of the pavilion underneath was damaged.

The building was re-roofed and converted into a singlestorey building and continued to do service for sports groups until, 52 years later, it was gutted in an arson attack. No effort was made to rebuild on that site.

Honouring the Fallen During the period of the First World War, 1914 to 1915, many men from the Ashburton District signed up to fight for the Empire against the German army. Many did not return - almost 450 from Ashburton were killed. The first Ashburton men were killed on April 25, 1915 - the first Anzac Day. Ashburton philanthropist and patriot Frederick Ferriman presented a special flag and a flagpole to the families of those men. The Ashburton Museum, with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Ashburton, has erected in front of the museum one of the original Ferriman flagpoles, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag. An original flag is on display in the museum. Wakanui ended more than a decade of Collegians’ dominance of the Mid Canterbury first grade men’s hockey division at the NBS Ashburton Hockey Turf on Sunday with a 3-0 win.

Collegians, who have won the Johnny Hunt Trophy for the last 11 years, had no answers for the defensively sound Wakanui.

Wakanui led 2-0 at the interval thanks to Mark Bennett’s penalty corner and a field goal from Simon Page, before James Tavendale sealed the win with a penalty stroke in the second half.

In the women’s senior grade final, Methven downed Collegians 2-1.

In brief Kokkinakis furious Thanasi Kokkinakis has told Nick Kyrgios he was out of order dragging him into his on-court verbal stoush with Stan Wawrinka at last week’s Montreal Masters.

Speaking for the first time since Kyrgios’s unsavoury sledging of Wawrinka, Kokkinakis on Monday revealed his good mate had apologised for the incident.

Kokkinakis admitted he’d endured a couple of sleepless nights since Kyrgios sparked global outrage with his sledge to Wawrinka: “Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend”. While Kokkinakis said he’d cleared the air with Wawrinka and Donna Vekic, the rising WTA star Kyrgios was referring to, the fallout continued on Sunday when Kokkinakis almost came to blows during a heated match with American Ryan Harrison.

Complete effort secures win

By DaviD Leggat Following New Zealand’s South African cricket series is something of a throwback to days long gone. No TV and no radio coverage means details of the matches are sketchy and essentially impressions gained come off the scorecard which is not always an exact, or reliable, method.

An inability to strike a deal by Cricket South Africa’s agents and Sky TV has left a sour taste, especially as New Zealand have demonstrably proved they are one of cricket’s most watchable sides.

Still, after a wobbly start in the first T20 in Durban early on Saturday, New Zealand bounced back with an emphatic win at Centurion yesterday.

From halfway through their chase for 178, South Africa were behind the pace and New Zealand’s 32-run win sets up the three-game ODI series nicely.

New Zealand might have felt they had more than 177 for seven in them, having won the

toss, after man of the match – and series – Martin Guptill and captain Kane Williamson rattled on 52 in 5.3 overs.

Guptill went on to 60 in 35 balls, but was left to bemoan the fact he hadn’t kicked on to closer to three figures.

There were handy cameos from Grant Elliott, Jimmy Neesham and Colin Munro, all of whom rattled along at better than a run-a-ball rate.

For South Africa, the game was a new experience. Never before has an international been played at Centurion in August.

The pitch kept lower than might have been anticipated and New Zealand were on the job.

Hashim Amla and captain AB de Villiers were gone before the end of the seventh over and when Mitchell McClenaghan got his second wicket, removing the dangerous David Miller, the game was up for the hosts.

“The guys did a fantastic job with the ball and were great in the field,” Guptill said. “Today was a much more complete performance than the other night and we got rewards for it.”

Chiefs sign Warrior The Chiefs have bolstered their outside back stocks by signing Warrior Glen Fisiiahi on a two-year deal. The 24-year-old is set for a return to the NRL or NSW Cup side this weekend after a layoff, and will be keen to make up for lost time after missing a lot of footy with an assortment of injuries. He is off contract with the Warriors but had thought about a switch back to rugby for some time. The plan is to shift to Hamilton with his wife-to-be in November before pre-season Super Rugby training.

For the next few weeks, though, he is committed to the Warriors.

The Chiefs have lost Tom Marshall, Bryce Heem and Hosea Gear from their 2015 roster so this is a timely boost with Fisiiahi an option for either wing or fullback alongside other outsides such as Toni Pulu and James Lowe and the McKenzie brothers.

Inglis, Sutton clear South Sydney pair John Sutton and Greg Inglis have been cleared of any major injuries and will be expected to line up for Friday’s grudge match against Canterbury.

Sutton came off midway through the first half against North after complaining of a glute pain, while Inglis failed to finish the match having looked to sustain a jaw issue. Star gallopers on show at Taupo Three 1200 metre trial heats featuring half a dozen Group One winners will provide a tasty entree at Taupo before racing gets under way there tomorrow.

Among them will be the recentlycrowned New Zealand Horse of the Year Mongolian Khan, current Gr.1 Makfi Challenge Stakes favourite Turn Me Loose and the Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas hopeful Dal Cielo.

Melbourne Cup contender Mongolian Khan has exceeded the expectations of trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman with his effort for fourth in a Te Teko trial earlier this month.

Forsman said the four-year-old was on target to resume in the Gr.1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington on September 12 to set up a possible clash with the Gr.1 Rosehill Guineas winner Volkstok’n’barrell.

Turn Me Loose won his 1000 metre trial at Te Teko to head the Makfi market at $4 while last season’s Gr.1 Diamond Stakes winner Dal Cielo ran third and is set to make his spring reappearance in Melbourne.

“He won’t race here and will go straight to Australia to get him ready for the Caulfield Guineas,” Forsman said.

Ashcoll season ends in defeat

Ashburton College First XV’s season ended in a 25-21 defeat to Timaru Boys’ High School at the Ashburton Showgrounds on Saturday.

Dave McCrea’s side amassed four wins, a draw and nine losses during their UC Championship campaign and the slim four-point deficit on Saturday may have flattered Ashburton College.

McCrea said his side was forced to defend for prolonged periods as Timaru enjoyed plenty of ball, but praised his players for an enjoyable season.

“The score was closer than the game was, they dominated possession and territory and we defended for long periods,” he said.

“Having four wins and a draw is better than it’s been in the past but at times we let teams back in to the game when we shouldn’t, but they’re a good bunch of guys and I’ve enjoyed it.”

Timaru Boys will now lock horns with Christ’s College in Christchurch on Saturday in a play-off for ninth place of the 15-team competition.

In the weekend’s big semifinals, Shirley Boys upset Christchurch Boys 25-17 while St Bede’s upset St Andrew’s 2212.

Combinations, consistency key for ABs

By Patrick mckendry The All Blacks’ next test will be a World Cup match against Argentina at Wembley Stadium in five weeks. The defence of their title is, as coach Steve Hansen said a day after his team thrashed Australia at Eden Park, “so close now you can just about taste it”.

So what can we and the All Blacks take out of their performance against the Wallabies on Saturday? Take away the emotion of the occasion – Richie McCaw setting a test appearances world record and playing his final one at home, along with Dan Carter, Tony Woodcock, Conrad Smith, Keven Mealamu, and Ma’a Nonu – the All Blacks proved they have players capable of big performances, are capable of bouncing back from defeat, and have a game plan that works. And that’s about it.

A week earlier in Sydney they showed they are capable of collectively putting in a bad performance. An off night at ANZ Stadium cost them the Rugby Championship – an off day in a World Cup knockout match will see them flying home early.

Hansen conceded as much at Eden Park afterwards, saying one of the big lessons of their 2007 quarter-final failure at the hands of France was that nothing can be taken for granted.

If the All Blacks come first or second in their pool, which

apart from the Pumas also includes Tonga, Namibia and Georgia, they will be guaranteed a quarter-final, but nothing else.

“The difference at the World Cup is you get four games guaranteed,” Hansen said. “If you’re good enough to win your pool or come second, you get one more and that’s it. That was the lesson in 2007 – if you don’t win that one you come home, so I don’t think anyone will need to be told there’s a second chance, you just have to front up. It’s knockout rugby, it’s either a plane ride home or you get to hang around and have another go.”

The All Blacks will give themselves the best chance of reaching a consistently high level of performance by retaining a core group of players

throughout the tournament.

Unlike in 2007, there will be no chopping and changing. It will probably mean some big scores against the likes of Georgia and Namibia, but so be it. The gelling of combinations and match fitness of key individuals will be vital if the All Blacks are to progress.

For the All Blacks, the Rugby Championship matches and recent extra Bledisloe Cup test were notable for experimentation. The selections of Lima Sopoaga and Victor Vito were two of the most interesting.

But, after Hansen and his fellow selectors stayed true to their word and gave everyone a go, the tinkering is highly likely to stop now.

And if places are more or less guaranteed once the World Cup kicks off, the key becomes the

maintaining of personal and collective standards, as Hansen said after 41-13 demolition of the Wallabies.

“All we can do is make the environment a little uncomfortable at times, but it can’t be false either, because people aren’t stupid,” Hansen said.

No8 Kieran Read, one who made a timely statement with a good performance in his most recent appearance, added: “It has given us a big lift - to finish this campaign on a really high note. We’re always going to be confident [going to the World Cup] but we need to make sure we’re working really hard as a unit.

“We can’t let our performance stay there – that’s not going to be enough in a couple of months’ time.”

Burgess unfazed by rugby rules maze One month out from a potential Rugby World Cup debut, rugby league convert Sam Burgess insists not knowing some finer points of the game won’t hold him back.

Burgess made a compelling case for a spot in coach Stuart Lancaster’s 31-man England World Cup squad with a barnstorming performance in his Test debut, a victory against France at Twickenham on Saturday.

But his major slip-up came in the form of his sin-binning late in the first half - when he was singled out by French halfback Morgan Parra, who ran straight at a back-pedalling Burgess after a quick tap from a penalty and drew a tackle before he’d retreated 10m.

The yellow card came as a shock to Burgess, who later admitted he didn’t realise it would trigger an automatic 10-minute stint on the sidelines.

“Thankfully it didn’t cost us the game. I’ll be richer for the experience though I guess,” said Burgess after becoming the first England player sin-binned on senior international debut.

“It’s something I’ll learn (from) and won’t do again. I didn’t realise it was an automatic sin-binning. It’s just a reaction thing.”

It was a moment of cutting honesty about the challenges the 26-year-old faces despite the enormous strides he’s made.

But when asked if he had expected to know all the complex laws of the 15-man game so close to the World Cup, which starts with England’s clash with Fiji on September 18, Burgess was unapologetic.

“Do you know all the rules?” he asked a journalist.

“There’s a lot of rules, man.

“Sometimes I think that the players that have played for all their lives don’t know the full rules. But I’m not going to lose too much sleep over it.”

Burgess revealed some coaching on the run from teammates helped stop him spending more time in the bin later in the game.

“The boys were talking to me (when) it happened again in the second half,” he said. “Richard Wigglesworth was shouting `Sam, no! Don’t touch him!’“ But the Clive Churchill medal winner also said he felt more comfortable in the rugby union with each passing day.

Comparing his England debut, to his debut with the second-string England side seven months ago, Burgess said it was like chalk and cheese.

Teen takes honours Christchurch teenager Max Jones won the biggest race of his young cycling career, winning Saturday’s elite race of the fourth round of the Calder Stewart Cycling Series, the Kings Electrical Ashburton Classic.

Well supported by his Modus Construct team, Jones, 19, out-sprinted Brodie Catterick (TotalPOS Solutions) to win the 133-kilometre race held in calm wet conditions in three hours and nine minutes.

“I’m totally stoked to get the win,” Jones said. “The Modus boys all worked hard, sticking to our plan, so I was really well set up to go for the win which is definitely the biggest result I’ve had.”

Without any winds to challenge the riders, the pace was high for the first half of racing with a number of at-

tempts to get away closed down until a break of 12 riders that included four riders from the Modus Construct team, finally formed after 80 kilometres of racing.

The group, which also contained two riders from elite series leader Sam Horgan’s Mike Greer Homes team, worked well to steadily build a lead of just over one minute.

With six teams represented in the break there wasn’t an organised chase which saw the leaders stay away to contest the closing kilometres of racing.

Wellington’s Dave Rolands (Christchurch Mitsubishi) was an impressive overall winner of the 107 kilometre masters race, taking the win from Brendon Akeroyd (Placemakers). Sharlotte Lucas won the women’s race.

Ashburton Boxing Club’s 15 bout card at the Celtic Rugby Club proved a resounding success with three local fighters taking wins on Saturday.

Aron Juhasz was the first Ashburton boxer to take to the ring in the 82kg elite division in a bout scheduled for three, two-minute rounds against Matt Konzett.

Konzett, who trains at the Round 12 Boxing Gym in Christchurch, is coached

by Bryan Barry – the brother of Joseph Parker’s trainer Kevin Barry, and proved

too good on the night despite a valiant effort from Juhasz.

Ben Bailey was the next Ashburtonian in action against Oamaru’s Michael Ross in the 85kg elite division.

Despite having fought just twice, 22-year-old Ross has shown plenty of potential in his short career and scored a split decision victory over Konzett in Christchurch in his last bout.

The 22-year-old Oamaruvian extended his unbeaten run, taking a unanimous points decision over Bailey.

In the card’s sixth bout, Christian Taiko posted the Ashburton club’s first

victory of the evening with a unanimous points decision in the 64kg elite section over three, three-minute rounds against Gore’s Clayton Stewart.

Cornelius Grobler was next up and also took a unanimous decision over Sam Clark in the night’s ninth bout in the 64kg elite division before Morgan Lumsden added a ‘W’ to his record via unanimous decision in the 64kg elite section to the delight of the Ashburton faithful.

Local fighter Matt Miller brought proceedings to an end with a narrow loss against Papanui’s Tom Doyle in the evening’s last bout.

Ashburton Boxing Club coach Colin Sheehan said the event’s success was down to the hard work of the local coaches and fighters.

“I would sum up the whole thing as a victory for the coaches, Roydon Leath, John Leath and Damian Perriton, it’s the best result in a tournament for a long time,” he said. “The three that won were all class acts, Cornelius (Grobler), Christian (Taiko) and Morgan (Lumsden) were against guys of championship standard.

“The six of them were a credit to Ashburton and their coaches, getting in the ring is the toughest thing.”
