Ashburton’s new millionaire is keeping quiet about their identity after a big Lotto win on Saturday night.

One lucky Ashburton resident will be walking away with $22.2 million after winning Powerball First Division.

However, Lotto has confirmed that as of last night the winner still had not claimed the biggest single prize ever won by a ticket sold in Mid Canterbury.

Rumours have been circulating on social media about who won but no-one has put their name forward.

There have also been suggestions on Facebook about what people would do with the money with some saying they would buy Waimaori Lot 9, where the proposed water bottling plant will be located, travel or build a hydroslide at EA Networks Centre.

Mayor Angus McKay said he hoped the winner would be sensible with the money and treat their family while keeping some in the district.

This is not Ashburton’s first big Lotto win with a $14.4 million ticket being sold

by Lotto at Countdown in August 2014.

Saturday night’s winning ticket was sold on My Lotto in Ashburton and is made up of $22.2 million from Powerball First Division and $200,000 from Lotto First Division.

This is the single largest Powerball prize won so far this year and it’s the fourth time that the top Powerball prize has been won in 2016 – meaning there are now four more millionaires in New Zealand.

This year’s Powerball millionaires include a Tauranga family that won $7

million in February, an Ohakune winner that won $6 million in January, and a family from Timaru that won $7 million in January.

Hundreds attend march

More than 200 people marched to council on Saturday to protest the sale of land in Ashburton for a water bottling plant.

The protesters met at the domain before marching down West Street to Baring Square West outside the Ashburton District Council.

The Bung the Bore rally, organised by the Waimaori Lot 9 Action Group, was held in protest of the sale of a 10 hectare piece of land at Ashburton’s North East Business park, which has an existing water consent in place allowing the owner to take up to 45 litres of water an hour from a bore.

The concern was that the sale might be to an overseas company, it has now been confirmed as New Zealand company NZ Pure Blue Ltd, and that taking the water could deplete the community’s own water supplies.

The demonstration was facilitated by Ashburton resident Ken Leadley with speeches from Green Party water spokesperson Catherine Delahunty, Labour MP for Te Tai Tonga Maori electorate Rino Tirikatene, Simon Brown from the anti-TransPacific Partnership Agreement lobby group It’s Our Future and rally organiser Jen Branje.

During her address to the crowd, Ms Delahunty said there were water bottling troubles throughout New Zealand but Ashbur-

ton had taken a stand and was a national frontrunner.

“You have led this country in an issue of national and local importance.

“Water is the most fundamental reason we are alive. The last thing we need is to get rid of the most precious resource we have.”

Ashburton residents have been failed by council and Environment Canterbury in the water consent and proposed sale of the land. They are supposed to represent their community and be upfront about their dealings, not hide behind commercial sensitivity, she said.

Mr Brown tied the sale in with the TPPA, saying that while it may not affect people now the worry is that in the corporates, such as water bottling companies, might be able to sue local and regional councils if environmental protection laws are put in place in the future.

Ms Branje, who has been the instigator behind the rally, said the purpose of the protest was to try to get council to retract the water consent.

“We’re not opposed to the sale of the land, we’re just saying let’s not lump our water with it.”

At the end of the protest questions from community members were written on a board for Mr McKay and Mrs Goodhew, which will be given to them at a later date.

■ BIG RIDES DAY

Big Rides Day draws hundreds of families Hundreds of families from all over Canterbury travelled to the Methven Showgrounds for the Big Rides Day yesterday.

The event, which has been held four times before, is a fundraiser for Methven Playcentre.

President Melanie Marr said she wanted to thank all the volunteers and drivers for their support

and they hoped to have raised about $3000 for the running of the playcentre.

“It was very, very successful.

“It was one of the biggest crowds we have had.”

The header and milk tanker rides were the most popular with children also enjoying the traction engine, tractors and ambulances.

I-Sites on the closure list

A refocus of the way tourism is marketed and promoted in the Ashburton District is likely to see the district’s two i-Sites forced out of business.

After an in-depth review of Experience Mid Canterbury, commissioned by the Ashburton District Council, consultant Peter Winder said the tourism organisation still had a role to play in promoting the district, but he recommended closing the i-Sites in Methven and Ashburton and shutting down the organisation’s website.

needed to move its focus to attracting, developing and growing events within the district and into marketing and promotional activity that increased the use of Mt Hutt, Mr Winder said.

While Mt Hutt was a significant attraction, it was seasonal and beyond that the district had quite limited tourism products and attractions, he said.

“The conclusion of the review is that the current district promotion activities are probably not the most cost-effective approach to tourism promotion. There’s a whole stream of events of different scales that could drive visitors to the district, but Mid Canter-

bury as a brand is important in Mid Canterbury but rather meaningless outside Mid Canterbury.”

I-Sites had become expensive facilities for the amount of money they generated, Mr Winder said.

“They’re an artefact of a past way of doing business. The organisation has a very limited marketing budget and expectations from councillors are incredibly high compared to what you’re prepared to fund. If they closed the iSites and you funded them at the same level, they could refocus in a way that gave a better return and they’d be quite excited, ” he said.

The organisation is a councilcontrolled organisation and re-

ceives $386,000 each year in council funding. The report threw up few real surprises, Experience Mid Canterbury chief executive Bruce Moffatt said.

“The things that were raised we’ve been looking at, they’re typical of the things we need to look at to ensure we use ratepayers’ dollars well.”

I-Site closures had been signalled for some time and were happening around New Zealand as people changed to obtaining information online, Mr Moffat said.

He believes the public still needs somewhere they can get Ashburton District specific information

but said Experience Mid Canterbury needed to work through the suggested closures.

“We certainly don’t want to lose any head count, but here we’re lucky we have so many locals who are our great volunteers.”

While the organisation’s website was a challenge, because Ashburton was a destination town as opposed to a regional centre, the organisation did not have the option of uploading content onto Tourism New Zealand’s site as the regional centres could.

The report, however, was clear the organisation was doing everything it could to meet council’s requirements and more.

Rakaia dairy farmer on his way to the grand final

Rakaia farmer Athol New is again asserting Mid Canterbury’s dominance in the FMG Young Farmer Contest by taking out the Aorangi regional final on Saturday night.

The 30-year-old dairy farm business manager will now represent the Aorangi region in the grand final at Timaru in July.

In only his second regional final, Athol showed his capability across all tasks and looked relaxed and controlled during the agri-skills challenge that ended the practical day, although he admitted to feeling shattered.

“It was more physically draining than mentally.”

Athol said he was ‘pretty relieved’ when he was crowned the champion because he had pushed himself harder than ever before during the day’s practical tasks and had been particularly conscious of not losing points on health and safety mistakes.

His skill across the board, including his strong theoretical skills, was highlighted when he was named the winner of the AgriGrowth Challenge and the Agri-Business Challenge.

With the grand final only six weeks away, Athol spent the day after his win organising

rosters so that he could take four days off a fortnight to prepare and working through a study plan with his wife Jane, who he says will be the driving force behind his preparations.

Athol continues a proud tradition in the Pendarves club, with five grand finalists, and two winners since 1998.

With a 2300 herd to manage alongside his wife, Athol admits he is a busy man, but believes with planning he can prepare well.

Pendarves chairperson Isabelle Cassan said the result was great for the club and reinforced how strong they were in the contest.

Ms Cassan said they had conducted a mock question session with Athol at a previous meeting to help him answer buzzer questions faster and they would be looking to do similar events in the build-up to the grand final. She said the club was now rallying together to get as many down to Timaru to support Athol.

“I believe he will get over the line and win.”

Athol was not the only Mid Canterbury contestant to perform well with Sam Bryan, the favourite before the event, coming in runner-up in his last crack at getting to the grand final. Arable farmer Stephen Blain from the Hinds club finished down the table but produced an admirable first attempt at competing in the contest.

Resources stretched thin

Mid Canterbury children with learning difficulties are not getting enough support due to a lack of services.

An increase in students being identified with learning difficulties at schools around the country means that the services and resources are being stretched thin.

Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Hilary Boyce said more students were being identified as having learning difficulties nowadays because people were better informed, and while there were some good resources available in the district there were not enough to cater for all students with special needs.

The resources include Group Special Education, which is a Ministry of Education initiative

service and a district resource teacher of literacy who works with teachers and students.

All schools can refer to the RLTB and teachers are able to get support to ensure their programmes and resources are appropriate for students with special needs.

While these are all excellent services they are stretched and some children are missing out on the necessary help, Ms Boyce said.

“The students are not getting the support they need.”

This is partly because there is not enough funding being put into special needs education and partly because there is a lack of trained people with the specific skills necessary, she said.

“It definitely needs to be improved.”

The Ministry of Education is

aware of the lack of services and has done a number of reviews but more work needs to be done, she said.

“The services are thin on the ground, we need more support.”

However, all schools in the district have been trying to do their best and have their own programmes, professional development and plans in place to identify and work with students with learning difficulties, Ms Boyce said.

“All schools in Mid Canterbury are really aware of the need to help students with difficulties.”

Ensuring students get the help they need is incredibly important because education is a basic human right and having special learning needs should not affect this, she said.

“Certainly in today’s world we want everyone to be literate and numerate.”

Lions’ annual charity auction proves successful The Ashburton Racecourse was full of all sorts of knick-knacks for the Ashburton Pakeke Lions annual charity auction on Friday.

Publicity committee member Noel Lowe said Friday’s auction was a complete success.

There was less stock than previous years but it was better quality and ranged from lawn mowers, antique bikes and fine crystal to vegetables.

There was also about a 90 per cent clearance of stock which was pleasing, he said.

Treasurer Graeme Mabley said they made more than $5000 from the event and proceeds will be going to various causes within the community.

The club has run the auction annually for the past 15 years.

Effort to save kiwis Three kiwi chicks have arrived at their new home as part of an effort to save a rare species of our national bird. The Coromandel brown kiwi – one male and two female – were hatched at Auckland Zoo and will now live on Motutapu Island in the Hauraki Gulf. Motutapu Island was chosen for the trio, aged between three and five months, due to its lack of predators. It is estimated there are only 1700 Coromandel brown kiwi remaining in New Zealand. - NZME

Fuel-tanker rolled A fuel-tanker driver escaped without major injuries after his vehicle rolled in Southland yesterday. Emergency services were called at 5.32am after the tanker rolled on State Highway 6 between Lumsden and Five Rivers.

A section of the road was closed while the tanker was removed from the scene.

Man hit by train A man has died after he was hit by a train in Christchurch yesterday. The man was killed at 2.44am on a section of the tracks between Factory Rd and Radcliffe Rd in the northern suburb of Belfast. Police said the 44-yearold man was hit by a city-bound train. Officers are still locating the man’s next of kin to advise them of his death. Roads were closed in the area but are now operating as normal. Police are investigating the death.

No tsunami threat Emergency services have ruled there is no tsunami threat to New Zealand after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the coast of Ecuador yesterday. NZ authorities were alerted to the possible risk of a tsunami to its coastline after the earthquake. However, the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management have deemed there is no risk to New Zealand.

In brief Police chase Three people have been arrested following a police chase across Auckland on Saturday night. The pursuit started in Great North Rd in Grey Lynn about 10.40pm when police spotted the stolen car, Inspector Tony Edwards of the police northern communications centre said. “We lost it for about one minute, but the Eagle [helicopter] managed to track it down to south Auckland,” he said.

The occupants attempted to dump the car and flee, but police arrested three people. No one was injured, Inspector Edwards said.

Nearly 100 people gathered outside St Vincent de Paul’s newly renovated facilities for an official opening yesterday.

The building, located at The Triangle, was demolished and rebuilt due to earthquake damage.

The premises were closed in July last year and the society has been operating out of the Ashburton Learning Centre since.

President Evans Chibanguza said he was pleased to finally have the new facility because it has been a long time coming.

Ashburton resident Molly Crequer, who has volunteered for St Vincent de Paul for 30 years and still works as a shop assistant at age 95, cut the ribbon and a blessing was made by Father Geoff Gray.

People were then invited to a tour around the building before meeting at the Senior Citizens’ Centre for speeches and afternoon tea.

Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay and Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew were in attendance.

The temporary facilities closed on Friday and the new store will be open on April 26.

A New Zealand-bred horse is making waves in the racing world for his “unique” moniker.

Horsey McHorseface was purchased for $45,000 in New Zealand in November by Australian Joe Rosetti. The 2-year-old gelding will debut in Australia next month.

Rosetti’s racing manager Jake Bruce spoke to CNN about the quirky name. “We had a laugh about it in the office and thought, ‘Hey, why not’,” he said. “Joe’s a good bloke and he’s a good horse.

We just thought it would be a good fit.”

If you’ve demolished a building that’s under three storeys high, the Ashburton District Council wants to know.

It has changed its regulations so that buildings that are freestanding and under three storeys no longer require a building consent before they’re demolished.

And that means there are now gaps in its rating information, said council finance manager Sandy Hogg.

With rates notices about to be prepared for the new financial rating year, from July 1, it needs to have its records updated to ensure building owners receive the correct rating notices.

Unless the council is aware that a building has been demolished it could still generate an improvement rates charge.

“Council wants to ensure its records are up-to-date to save building owners receiving incorrect rates notices for buildings they have demolished and we’re asking that building owners let us know by the end of May of any buildings no longer on their property so we don’t inadvertently send out the wrong notices with improvement rates included,” Mrs Hogg said.

Property owners will still be liable for other rates charges on sites where buildings have been demolished.

The death of a 5-year-old girl while out riding her bicycle yesterday could have been prevented, her family says.

Shinia Matehaere died after she was hit by a four-wheeldrive vehicle while riding her bike on Saturday afternoon, near the intersection of Matapihi Rd and Waikari Rd in Tauranga.

Shinia and her 8-year-old cousin are believed to have been crossing the road at the time, on their way to Te Matapihi Kohanga Reo school.

Her father, Rikihana Matehaere, told Fairfax the local community had been lobbying Tauranga City Council “for

years” to lower the speed limit on the 70km/h stretch of road.

“They could even have put a pedestrian crossing in there,” he said.

Her father and mother, Hine Minarapa, said they were “barely holding in there” as they tried to cope with the unexpected death of their daughter.

“The school is right there where the accident happened.

We’ve been complaining for years, for a very long time, that it’s 70km/h.”

The council’s chief executive, Garry Poole, told Fairfax he would “investigate this situation immediately”.

An elderly Opotiki man remains in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital after crashing his campervan near Matamata on Saturday. The man’s wife died in the blaze on Tauranga Rd, Te Poi, just after 4pm. Northern fire communications shift manager Jaron Philips said the campervan was well involved in flames when they arrived at the scene. The body of the man’s wife was recovered from the caravan, he said. - NZME

Helicopter rescue An injured man was flown to Waikato Hospital, following a quad-bike crash yesterday in a remote area south of Taumarunui in the central North Island.

Emergency services were called to Retaruke at 9.53am to rescue the man, who had fallen into a gorge and was trapped, the police said.

A helicopter extracted him at around 11.30am and he was taken to Waikato Hospital.

Rudd rules out Clark Former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has effectively dismissed Helen Clark’s chances of becoming the next UN SecretaryGeneral, saying she was “very capable” but it was his “firm belief” an Eastern European would get the job.

Speaking to Indian newspaper the Hindu, Mr Rudd, who is widely rumoured to want the job himself, was asked about Helen Clark’s bid for the job.

“As I said it is my firm belief that this time we will have a UN [Secretary-General] chief from East Europe. As for Helen, I think she will be a strong candidate if we cannot find agreement between the P-5 and the other members of the Security Council on an East European candidate.”

Mr Rudd said he had known Helen Clark for a long time. “She’s a very capable person and strong PM of New Zealand as well as a strong internationalist.”

The P-5 are the five permanent members of the Security Council who have a power of veto over the Secretary-Generals’ role – Russia, France, China, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Asked about his own intentions of standing, Mr Rudd referred to his view that an Eastern European would get it. “Last I looked my name is not Ruddovich.”

He would not comment on Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop’s remarks that he had been lobbying world leaders. “That is a statement she made and I didn’t.”

His answer to the Clark question will fuel the theory he is waiting to see if the Security Council can agree on an Eastern European candidate before putting his own name up as a possible candidate.

Of the nine candidates, only two are not from Eastern Europe – Helen Clark and Portugal’s Antonio Guterres.

Helen Clark has responded to the question of whether an Eastern European should get it by saying that all member states were invited to nominate candidates and that the best person for the job should get it.

All nine candidates went before the General Assembly last week for two hour sessions on the role.

However, other candidates may come forward either before or after the Security Council meets for a preliminary vetting in July.

There is speculation German Chancellor Angela Merkel is considering it.

Mr Rudd is likely to seek support from Australia’s Government if he wishes to run and there are mixed views on that in Australia.

Australia has so far withheld public support for Helen Clark and Prime Minister John Key has previously said if Mr Rudd did contest it, he would expect Australia to feel honour-bound to support him.

Rewarded for dedication

A long-running involvement with Scouts in Mid Canterbury has resulted in Joyce Bingham being awarded the Medal of Merit for Services to Scouting.

Mrs Bingham has been involved with Scouting since the 1980s, when she started out in Tinwald as an assistant Kea leader, before moving into a Kea leader role.

“Joyce always had fun and interesting programmes for the Keas, with a real emphasis on learning,” Mania-O-Roto Scouts zone leader Lori Rusbatch said.

“Her enthusiasm and dedication to the role soon had the district team looking in her direction.”

She helped out on district and area (zone and region) events, area and national Kea days, area Cub days, and Staveley Adventure Camp was always a favourite.

Mrs Bingham said receiving the

award was a humbling experience, and was quick to point out it was a team effort.

Car browsers came across an unusual import at an Auckland yard yesterday afternoon.

A snake made an appearance in a Nissan Leaf at the North Shore yard, surprising staff and customers who say it was still very much alive and putting its head up above the bonnet from time to time.

Salesman Alistair McNish told the Herald there was a snake in the black, electric-powered car, which had been imported from Japan. He said biosecurity officials had been called to deal with the reptile.

Staff were at a loss as to how it ended up in the car.

“The car has got a biosecurity sticker as if it has passed, but it looks like they have missed a snake in that one.”

From its width of about 2.5cm, he estimated the snake to be 30 to 40cm long, although he had not seen it at full length as it was stuck between the bonnet and the body of the car, with only part of it protruding outside the vehicle.

Where was the support?

egardless of whether or not you agree with the sale of land for a water bottling plant in Ashburton, there should have been local government representation at a protest rally on Saturday.

The Ashburton District Council has been in discussions with a company, who has revealed itself as NZ Pure Blue Ltd, about the sale of a 10 hectare block of land in the North East Business Park in order to establish a bottled water plant.

This land comes with a well which has a water consent issued

by Environment Canterbury in 2011 giving the land owner the right to take up to 45 litres of water per second from a bore that must be at least 95 metres deep.

The proposed sale has caused a rift in the community with some concerned about the ethics of selling water as well as the potential environmental impact and others pleased with the fact that it could cut rates and create jobs.

Like any big issue affecting a community, there are arguments for both sides. People should be able to think different things and have their own opinions, and opponents of the sale were justified when they held the Bung the Bore rally on Saturday. This rally, which has gained national recognition, was a chance for people in our democratic society to have their voices heard and their voices should have been heard by the right people.

Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay was invited to speak at the rally but declined due to not being able to discuss the details of the sale.

This is fair enough, but he could still have been there. Or someone from council just to, at least, listen to the people of this community.

Environment Canterbury representatives and our local MP were also unable to attend. If the mayor and our MP could not go, surely there could have been a representative to take their place?

The Department of Internal Affairs states that the purpose of local government is: - To enable democratic local decision-making and action by, and on behalf of, communities - To meet the current and future needs of communities for goodquality local infrastructure, local public services and performance of regulatory functions in a way that is most cost-effective for households and businesses.

What I gather from this is that council needs to do its best to serve its community and this should surely mean listening to people when they hold a demonstration about an issue they are not happy with.

There were 200 people at the march, and while this is only a small percentage of the district, doesn’t everyone have a right to be heard?

aw milk is milk that has not been pasteurised (heat-treated) to kill potentially harmful bacteria like E coli, Listeria, and Campylobacter.

The Government is keen to protect the ability of New Zealanders to access raw milk if they choose to, but we also have a responsibility to sensibly manage the risks posed by raw milk to consumers, including those who are most vulnerable, such as infants, young children, and the elderly.

After extensive consultation, the Government has decided to regulate raw milk to the same level as other high-risk foods, such as shellfish.

Under the new rules, farmers will need to meet requirements such as ensuring their premises and equipment are appropriate and their animals are in good health; testing milk for pathogens; keeping records of sales, and using appropriate labelling to manage public health risks associated with consuming raw

milk. Farmers will also need to be registered with the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and have their operations verified.

The new regulations are in line with the requirements that must be met by other businesses selling milk for further processing.

The main difference is that farmers selling raw milk to consumers will need to test their milk for pathogens.

The new rules strike the balance between managing the potential risks to public health while recognising that there is a demand for raw milk from both rural and urban consumers.

These requirements put producers who sell raw milk to

consumers on a par with other food producers who sell highrisk foods, such as shellfish, in needing to meet hygiene and safety requirements relevant to the risks their food presents.

We cannot be too careful when it comes to making sure food is safe to consume.

There have been 13 confirmed cases and two probable cases of foodborne illness associated with raw milk in the last six months.

Pregnant women, young children (particularly babies), the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems should not drink raw milk as they are at the greatest risk of getting sick, and the consequences for them can be severe.

The requirements around raw milk were initially looked at in 2011 and again in 2014.

The most recent public consultation in July 2014 resulted in 1585 submissions from a range of stakeholders both for and against the sale of raw milk.

Extensive consultation was carried out before establishing the new regulations, and MPI has continued to work with industry around implementation of the new rules.

In September 2015 MPI held three workshops with raw milk producers to outline the technical requirements for raw milk.

There was also targeted engagement with the two associations earlier this year on the draft notice (which contains the technical requirements).

MPI will be holding further workshops for industry over the upcoming months to help farmers implement the new requirements.

Farmers who currently sell raw milk to consumers will be given until November 1, 2016 to transition to the new requirements.

Quake kills 28

At least 28 people have died in Ecuador after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the country’s northwest Pacific coast.

The quake struck yesterday, causing “considerable damage” near the epicentre as well as in the largest city of Guayaquil.

The Andean nation’s government recommended residents leave coastal areas over concern about rising tides following the quake.

Alarmed residents streamed into the streets of the capital Quito, hundreds of kilometres away, and other towns across the nation.

“Based on preliminary information, there are 16 people dead in the city of Portoviejo, 10 in Manta and two in the province of Guayas,” said Vice-President Jorge Glas in a televised address.

“We continue to receive information.”

The country’s Geophysics Institute in a bulletin described “considerable damage” in the area of the epicentre and in Guayaquil, without providing further details.

It said the quake struck at a depth of

20km. Social media pictures showed a collapsed bridge in Guayaquil and a collapsed tower at an airport in the city of Manta.

“I was in my house watching a movie and everything started to shake. I ran out into the street and now I don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Lorena Cazares, 36, a telecommunications worker in Quito.

Parts of the capital were without power or telephone service, with many communicating only via Whatsapp.

Photos on social media showed cracks in the walls of shopping centres.

The capital’s municipal government later said power had been restored and there were no reports of casualties in the city.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said tsunami waves reaching 0.3 to one metre above tide level were possible for some coastal areas of Ecuador.

Neighbouring Peru issued a tsunami alert for the north of the country following the quake.

Quake toll in Japan hits 41 Pope returns Workers have resumed their search and rescue operation after two major earthquakes hit southern Japan, killing 41 people and injuring thousands.

About 240,000 residents were urged to leave their homes in the prefectures of Kumamoto and Oita on the island of Kyushu as authorities were concerned about mudslides and swollen rivers following heavy rain in the region, broadcaster NHK reported.

A series of aftershocks continued to rattle Kyushu after a magnitude-7.3 earthquake struck Kumamoto prefecture early on Saturday, which followed a tremor with a magnitude of 6.5 on Thursday night.

The Meteorological Agency warned of more aftershocks on Japan’s third largest island in the coming days.

Many of the victims died after they became trapped under collapsed houses, according to local authorities.

Eight people were missing in Minamiaso village, where the quakes triggered a largescale landslide, said local police officials.

Defence Minister General Nakatani said late on Saturday that the ministry would increase the number of troops to be dispatched to the region to 25,000 - with thousands already on site.

The government said there were no abnormalities at four nearby nuclear power stations.

The two major quakes were the strongest since the earthquake and ensuing tsunami in north-eastern Japan on March 11, 2011, which prompted the shutting down of all of its workable reactors in the months that followed.

Those twin natural disasters left about 18,500 people dead and caused a triple meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

At the camp on the Aegean island of Lesbos, adults and children broke down in tears before the pontiff, after their onward journey to Europe was cut short by an EU decision to block a migrant route used by a million people fleeing conflict since early 2015.

Francis symbolically took a small group of refugees with him on his aircraft as he left the island after a fivehour visit.

“The Pope has desired to make a gesture of welcome regarding refugees, accompanying on his plane to Rome three families of refugees from Syria, 12 people in all, including six children,” a Vatican statement said.

The individuals were selected from lots drawn, media reports said. They had been in camps before a deal between the EU and Turkey came into effect to halt the migrant flow on March 20.

Sant’Egidio, a Christian community which offers help for those in need and headquartered in Rome, will be looking after the families. Francis shook hands with hundreds of people as hundreds more were penned behind metal barriers at the Moria camp, which holds some 3000 people.

“Freedom, freedom,” migrants chanted as the Pope walked through the hillside facility in scorching sun.

Some women ululated.

“I want to tell you, you are not alone,” Francis said at the camp.

Be prepared to be enchanted

Possibly the greatest jewel in the Bay of Plenty’s tourism crown is White Island.

I

t is New Zealand’s only marine volcano and is the most active geothermal vent in the country.

But it is often out-of-sight, out-of-mind for many and this is a shame because the journey out to explore White Island is a remarkable experience.

White Island sits some 49km off the pretty town of Whakatane on the country’s east coast and is a 90-minute boat ride out into the Pacific.

The journey out is weather dependent, but not because of a worry about large waves – as the White Island Tours boat PeeJay IV can handle most conditions.

Rather, the size of the swell dictates what happens at the other end as you go by inflatable boat to the island itself. If the waves are too big then you can’t land.

Before you disembark the PeeJay IV you are given a hard hat and gas mask. The former in case there is an explosion that could biff rocks about, the latter to save your throat from the irritating effects of sulphurous gases.

From the inflatable you need to climb up rusty, but solid, ladders to an ancient jetty, then cross a metal plank to the rocks you need to clamber over to reach the beach.

If you doubt the solidity of the ladders don’t worry. They took my 110kg frame and a 10kg

Once on the beach you get safety instructions and then you set off on a fascinating journey.

And mark my words, your friends and relatives will be quite jealous that you are walking within a live volcano!

Along the way our guides (one in front, one at the rear) talk about key aspects of White Island.

The island is astounding. There are bright yellow and orange blooms of sulphur crystals, gurgling fumeroles, huge clouds of egg-pongy steam and wonderful colours and shapes of the moonlike landscape.

There are pinks and browns and greys, yellows, reds, oranges and all stand out vibrantly.

One of the eye-catching sights is a double gap of land that allows you to see the dark blue of the sea against the sky.

Incredible, you think, until you realise the gaps used to be the

walls of the island’s crater that were blown out by a massive explosion.

Where are the guides? And is my yellow helmet on securely enough? Honestly, the last thing you worry about on the island is an event, you are just so entranced by the occasion.

But that doesn’t mean you are silly. You must keep close together and listen to the advice the guides are giving. If something happens, they know what to do.

The sight of a steaming, bubbling crater lake is a once-in-alifetime experience and tasting volcanic stream water – twice – is interesting, if not exactly the nicest drop you’ll ever try. But, hey, you have to do it.

And that’s what I think about getting out to White island. It is something you just have to do.

Wakanui Blue returned to action in the Mid-South Canterbury men’s first division following a bye last weekend, while the women’s teams kicked off their campaigns with wins on Saturday.

Wakanui Blue fell to a 3-1 loss to Northern Hearts, but will take positives from the clash.

Fullback Bradley Going put Wakanui ahead early on but Hearts soon levelled proceedings before taking the lead on the stroke of halftime.

A lack of fitness and team cohesion left Wakanui with an uphill struggle in the second stanza

as they battled to level the score, but it was Hearts that found the net for a third time to put the contest out of reach.

Despite the loss, Wakanui Blue captain Sam Moore is confident his new-look team will continue to progress.

“It was certainly more positive than the 9-0 against Cambridge,” he said.

“I think it was just a lack of fitness that came back to bite us.”

Wakanui Blue will next be in action in a Mid Canterbury derby against Wakanui Black on Thursday evening at the Ashburton Hockey Turf, and Moore is expecting an exciting encounter.

“Derbies are always good, they’re always pretty emotionally charged affairs,” he said.

Hampstead-Collegians and Hampstead kicked off their seasons with wins in the women’s first division.

Karen McIntyre’s HampsteadCollegians downed Geraldine 1-0 thanks to a goal from Courtney Cannon, while Hampstead saw off Cambridge 2-1.

McIntyre said her side’s performance was pleasing.

“I think we dominated for 80 per cent of the game,” she said.

“We were probably unlucky not to score more goals, but it was the first game for everyone

and the girls did everything we asked of them, so we’re happy coaches.”

Meanwhile, Hampstead showed plenty of grit to come from behind to take the win over Cambridge.

Goals from Harriet Cameron and Gabby Muschamp pushed Hampstead through, while midfielder Michelle Knight was named player of the day for her tireless display.

Stand-in coach Kevin McCosker also credited Ashburton College students Jenna Turnball and Kacee Flannery after making the step up to senior level and producing fine performances.

The Golden State Warriors have demolished the Houston Rockets in game one of the NBA Western Conference Playoffs, but the 26-point victory was tarnished with an ankle injury to star guard Steph Curry.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Curry was questionable for today’s game two in Oakland after rolling his right ankle.

Curry disagreed.

“Right now I don’t see any scenario where I will be out,” Curry told reporters.

The Warriors won 104-78 on their home court yesterday despite Curry and Australian centre Andrew Bogut, who had five fouls, sitting out most of the second half and the Rockets attempting to out-muscle the defending champions.

“I didn’t like the way he was moving when he went back out for the third quarter,” Kerr, discussing Curry, said.

“He wanted to stay in, but he wasn’t moving well and we weren’t going to play him regardless of what happened.”

The Warriors began the playoffs just as hot as what they finished their record breaking 73-win season on Wednesday.

The game was physical, with Curry in an early push-and-shove incident with Houston defensive specialist Patrick Beverley that earned both players technical fouls.

Instead of rattling Curry, the reigning NBA MVP went on a shooting spree with 24 first-half points including five-from-seven from the three-point line.

“I didn’t see anything dirty,” Kerr said of Beverley’s play.

Earlier the Indiana Pacers upset the Toronto Raptors 100-90 in the first of their seven game series.

Black Sticks claim bronze in Sultan Cup The Black Sticks Men surged to a 5-4 shoot-out win over hosts Malaysia to secure the bronze medal at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. Trailing by two goals in the first quarter, the Black Sticks mounted a strong comeback to take the

game to a deciding shoot-out after a 3-3 draw at the end of regulation time. Kane Russell scored a second half double of penalty corner flicks while Hayden Phillips recorded his first international goal in stunning fashion.

The Black Sticks were successful with all five shots in the shootout before goalkeeper Devon Manchester proved the hero after padding away Malaysia’s fifth attempt to win the game.

It was a result made even

sweeter for striker Stephen Jenness in his 150th test and captain Simon Child on his 28th birthday.

Head coach Colin Batch said despite a slow start it was a gutsy effort to come back to force a result in shoot-out.

Celts win last-minute thriller

Week four of the Luisetti Seeds Combined Country Competition saw Hampstead, Celtic and Rakaia record wins, while Southern and Methven both lost for the fourth time in as many matches.

Hampstead 27 West Melton 23 Hampstead collected a second bonus point win in as many weeks with last-gasp heroics against West Melton on Saturday.

Hampstead’s campaign got off to a dismal start with losses to Lincoln and Glenmark, but a 25-5 win over Rolleston last week before the 27-23 win on Saturday has brought a sense of belief to a side that won just three times last season.

“I think it’s the first time since 2011 that we’ve had back-to-back wins,” said Hampstead coach Regan Broker.

The Hampstead faithful would have been forgiven for expecting the worst after trailing 13-0 inside 20 minutes, but Broker’s side displayed a steely resolve that was lacking a year ago.

Two tries and a conversion from Mariota Samoa brought Hampstead back into the tie for a 16-12 halftime score.

In the second half, Hampstead enjoyed more possession and territory as Michael Muliaga, Josh Nonu and Vaalele Galu also crossed over, the last of which came with three minutes to spare after trailing 23-22.

Broker said there is now a confident attitude in the Hampstead dressing room, and they will now turn their attention to

playing Saracens next week.

Glenmark 44 Methven 11 Methven’s aspirations of reaching the top four and defending their title were dashed with a fourth successive loss against Glenmark on Saturday.

Following the departure of 17 senior players from last season’s title-winning side, it was always going to be high, if not unrealistic, expectation to achieve the same feat again.

Methven trailed 15-3 at half time, with David Maw slotting a well-taken penalty to get his side on the board.

The second half was all Glenmark, aside from a classy try from Methven wing Oscar Baisagle from build-up play that offered an insight into the potential of this young team.

Glenmark have now won three from four and sit in third spot on the section one ladder behind the undefeated Southbridge and Burn/Duns/Irwell.

Methven manager Wayne Timpson insisted the scoreline was not a true reflection of the match, but did credit Glenmark’s forward pack for a commanding performance.

“The score doesn’t indicate the true nature of the game,” he said.

“The backs got outplayed a wee bit, we would still make those silly mistakes, but that’s just the old problem of getting used to each other.”

Celtic 18 Oxford 16 While Celtic players, staff and supporters nervously willed a last minute penalty to sail between the posts, young Nathan Mc-

Cloy was the only man that could make it happen, and he did, with a clean strike to secure his side’s third win of the season.

Celtic rode their luck at times against a solid Oxford team, and will have rued too many missed opportunities should they have fallen short on Saturday.

Leading 12-10 at half time, Shane Enright’s side could have, and should have had a much healthier lead.

Oxford were defiant throughout the second period and held a razor-thin 16-15 lead with seven minutes to play when the home side were awarded a kickable penalty.

David Morrison stepped up, and steered the ball wide.

It could have been a cruel end to an entertaining and deserving performance, but the final result paid testament to Celtic’s selfbelief.

Rakaia 28 v Waihora 26 Rakaia dealt Waihora their first loss of the season and bounced back from their first defeat of the campaign last weekend.

The Watters Cup holders were beaten 19-17 by Oxford a week ago, and assistant coach Wayne Foxcroft insisted the importance of returning to winning form quickly at this stage of the season.

“After losing last week we had to get back on track,” he said.

“You can probably lose two or three, but you can’t drop too many too soon and make the top four.”

Despite the win, Foxcroft believes Rakaia must continue to

improve to keep hold of a top four spot, with plenty of challenging fixtures ahead.

“We’re pleased with our attitude and application, but we have to play better to stay in that top four,” he said.

Rakaia will be boosted by the return of imposing Mid Canterbury centre Nete Caucau for next Saturday’s clash against Prebbleton after recovering from a sprained angle, but fellow Hammers’ wing Seta Koroitamana is a doubt after picking up a thigh injury.

Southern 22 v Darfield 26 Southern fell to their fourth defeat in a row, this time to Darfield, but did collect a bonus point for coming within seven.

Coach Michael Ellis said a failure to convert pressure into points was again the catalyst for another loss.

The Blues have spent long enough losing ugly not to be elated by their new found of skill winning ugly. They didn’t play much in the way of memorable rugby to get over the Sharks 23-18, but they did show a depth of character and resilience for the second week in succession. They did also show some ability to adapt, change their thinking and claw their way to a victory that was slipping away from them early in the second half.

They also have some individual class, none more exciting than Rieko Ioane, whose solo wonder try was the moment the game turned.

Sunwolves embarrassed The Cheetahs ran in 14 tries as they inflicted a humiliating 92-17 Super Rugby defeat on the Sunwolves from Japan in Bloemfontein. Wing Sergeal Petersen and No.8 Paul Schoeman each scored a hat-trick of tries as the Cheetahs completed their biggest ever victory in Super Rugby and a double over the Sunwolves this season. Just a single point separated these sides when they met in round three in Singapore, but the Sunwolves looked weary at the end of a three-match South African tour as they played with little structure or commitment and allowed too many soft scores.

Bulls run over the Reds The Bulls have confirmed the ageold adage about charging at red cloth, with a dominant 41-22 Super Rugby win over the struggling Queensland Reds, in Pretoria yesterday. The Bulls ran in five tries to three at their Loftus Versfeld fortress, and despite glimpses of fightback from the Reds, enjoyed 60 per cent of possession and more than 65 per cent of territory to assert their ascendency. Flyhalf Francois Brummer kicked two penalties and five conversions in a perfect night off the kicking tee.

Support for Hooper Wallabies captain Stephen Moore has jumped to the defence of Michael Hooper after his predecessor copped a stunning broadside from World Cupwinning coach Bob Dwyer. Dwyer says no way would he have Hooper in Australia’s match-day 23 on current form, ranking the 51Test star as only Australia’s fifthbest opensider flanker in Super Rugby behind David Pocock, Liam Gill, Sean McMahon and Matt Hodgson. “I felt for him and I don’t think he deserves that” Moore said.

McLaughlin rules the island

BY BEN MCKAY Scott McLaughlin has completed a clean sweep of the V8 Supercars round on Phillip Island, storming home in yesterday’s 200km race.

Just as he did on Saturday, the Volvo man took pole and was never headed in a drama-free drive, making the sensational look simple.

He beat home reigning champion Mark Winterbottom and DJR Team Penske man Scott Pye, celebrating with wild burnouts on the coastal circuit.

McLaughlin arrived on the Island without success in 44 races but is now the only man with two wins to his name this season.

The 22-year-old leaves with a new lap record, $2000 for his pair of pole positions and with 300 championship points added to his tally.

Given his status as the most in-demand driver on the grid, he might well have added significantly to his sign-on fee.

McLaughlin’s biggest challenge came on the opening lap from Jamie Whincup.

Whincup tried an audacious outside pass on McLaughlin but the 22-year-old refused to yield, sending the Red Bull man wide onto the grass.

Pye’s team-mate Fabian Coulthard encountered engine trouble on the formation lap, lost speed off the grid and finished in the garage.

Ashburton College’s 1st XV took a 31-15 win over Marist College Canberra at Terrace Downs on Saturday. It was the 1st XV’s third hit out before the kickoff of the UC Championships on April 30.

Team manager Dave McArthur cited Ashburton College’s superior fitness as the difference between the two sides in an evenly matched encounter. College will next be in action against Waimea in Lincoln on Tuesday.

The All Blacks Sevens are out of the Cup stages in Singapore after falling 12-7 to South Africa in the quarter-final. Neil Powell’s charges exacted some revenge after New Zealand had knocked them out of the playoffs at the Vancouver and Hong Kong tournaments. All the scoring was done in the first spell in a physical clash in which South Africa had the edge at the breakdown.

Coach Gordon Tietjens will be anxiously awaiting the return of his Super Rugby stars, the Ioane brothers and Ardie Savea, not to mention Tim Mikkelson, and DJ Forbes.

Masters claim 3-1 win Mid Canterbury United Masters football team recorded a 3-1 win over Halswell on Saturday.

United were 2-0 up at half time with Maikel Vallejo and Chris Peat finding the net. Matt Galbraith then headed a third before Halswell got a consolation late penalty. The win moves Mid Canterbury into third on the ladder one.

Another loss for Magic

All Blacks first-five spot a bit of a lottery he Super Rugby season has reached a point when speculation turns to who should be in the All Blacks for the opening tests of the season against Wales in June.

From what I’ve seen in Super Rugby, I have no fears for the strength of the squad, despite the retirements of Richie McCaw, Dan Carter, Keven Mealamu, Ma’a Nonu, Conrad Smith and Tony Woodcock.

Coach Steve Hansen is traditionally loyal and the chances of a genuine bolter appear limited, given he’s likely to extend his faith in a World Cup-winning squad.

Four jerseys are of key interest for me – 12, 10, 7 and 6 – but the bench structure will also play a key part in selection.

At first-five I haven’t got enough coins to throw in the air.

Lima Sopoaga is playing well; Aaron Cruden has been faultless but hasn’t place-kicked; and Beauden Barrett can either play at 10 or in the back three.

You don’t need two first-fives if he is covering on the bench, but has he done enough now to earn a starting spot?

Potentially Damian McKenzie could get a debut as cover at fullback and first-five but realistically, who would you leave out?

It’s less complicated at second-five.

Charlie Ngatai and Ryan Crotty are the key challengers to replace Nonu.

They will combine with Malakai Fekitoa, the logical contender at centre.

Sam Cane has been groomed as the No.7-in-waiting to replace McCaw – but Matt Todd hasn’t been bad either.

Nor

Beuaden Barrett: Has to be in the mix.

have Ardie Savea and Blake Gibson, although the Olympic sevens and injury could rule them out respectively.

At No.6 Jerome Kaino is likely to remain the incumbent but Brad Shields and Elliot Dixon loom as contenders.

As with any loose forward trio, it will depend

on how they complement each other.

Do they want blindside/No.8 or blindside/lock cover?

Elsewhere, the tight five should largely pick themselves based on last year.

The only debate at halfback is who backs up Aaron Smith from TJ Perenara, Tawera Kerr-Barlow or Brad Weber.

Weber is a livewire, and similar to Smith in many ways, so could be ideal to bring on to up the tempo.

Out wide there are few problems.

Ben Smith plays fullback and, while there were concerns over Julian Savea’s fitness, The Bus seems to have got that right in the past fortnight.

He just has to keep working on it.

At 21, Tevita Li might be worth a go on the other wing.

He would probably go up against Patrick Osborne whose age of 28, might present a barrier.

Alternatively, wing might be another way to bring McKenzie into the mix if Smith or Barrett shift accordingly.

Southern Steel coach Noeline Taurua has consigned her former team to more misery, with the Steel defeating the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic 63-53 yesterday.

Taurua coached the Magic for 11 seasons, but oversaw their downfall from the opposite bench as the Magic’s shocking start to the season continued. The Magic have lost three straight games, with the loss to the Steel adding to a 28 point humbling by the Swifts and one goal loss to Central Pulse. The Magic have finished no lower than fourth since 2003, but a dominant second half showing from the Steel has left them anchored to the bottom of the New Zealand conference.

All eyes on Hartley A star of the small screen may be waving the green flag at the opening round of the World Endurance Championship at Silverstone, but all eyes will be on the reigning world champions Kiwi Brendon Hartley, Aussie Mark Webber and German Timo Bernhard. Hartley and co qualified on the second row of the grid behind the two Audis and will have the sister Porsche 919 Hybrid alongside. “The conditions were very cold and it was even snowing in the morning,” said Hartley in a statement. The Kiwi is heading into his third season with same driver pairing and feels the three of them – Hartley, Webber and Bernhard – are well suited to race together and have gelled really well.

United clip Falcons’ wings

Mid Canterbury United bounced back from last weekend’s defeat to down FC Twenty Falcons 3-1 at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday.

After giving away two penalties in their last outing, United failed to learn their lesson, as referee Owen Wylie awarded the visitors a spot kick for handball, which was easily converted.

Falcons continued to pile the pressure on United but failed to add a second, despite plenty of chances, for a 1-0 score at the interval.

United coach Martin Fitzgerald then introduced Eddie Kettle for the second half, which proved a wise decision, with the midfielder finding the back of the net with his first touch.

With the scores level, United began to take charge of the tie and Greg

Feutz, who was playing in a more advanced midfield role than last week, added a second.

Feutz was given freedom to roam as Gareth Tolley produced a tireless performance in his defensive midfield role.

Stan Pokipoki then secured the win by latching on to a defensive error to slot United’s third and take a valuable three points.

Fitzgerald credited his players for a more polished performance, and praised youngsters Millar McLaughan and Alex Small for their solid contributions, while Kettle was named man of the match.

Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski scored twice in a 3-0 victory over Schalke 04 yesterday that edged the German giants closer to a record fourth consecutive league title. Bayern, eyeing a second treblewinning season after 2013 following Champions League semi-final qualification last week, are on 78 points, 10 clear at the top. - Reuters

Roar keep hopes alive Brisbane Roar have done it again, clawing back from a goal down with just minutes remaining to beat Melbourne Victory 2-1 and keep their A-League finals hopes alive. In yet another enthralling and unpredictable finals clash at Suncorp, the Roar looked gone for all money when Besart Berisha scored from an 86th-minute corner to give the reigning champions the lead. But the Roar produced a comeback for the ages and will now face Western Sydney Wanderers and the winner will move through to the grand final. - AAP

Once-proud Villa doomed to relegation By mike Collett Former European champions Aston Villa had their fate confirmed and were relegated from the Premier League with a ninth straight defeat yesterday as Sunderland and Newcastle both won to boost their battle against the drop.

Villa, who had not been relegated since the Premier League began in 1992, lost 1-0 at Manchester United where teenager Marcus Rashford scored the only goal in the first half.

Sunderland improved their chances of staying up by beating Norwich City 3-0 at Carrow Road while Newcastle fuelled their survival hopes with a 3-0 win over Swansea City at St James’ Park.

In the day’s late game, Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick and Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois was sent off for the second time this season as Manchester City thumped the outgoing champions 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Aguero, who missed a penalty when City beat Paris St Germain to reach the Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday, completed his hat-trick from the spot in the 80th minute after Courtois was sent off for bringing down Fernandinho.

The Belgium international keeper was also sent off in the opening league game of the season against Swansea City.

The win meant City moved up from fourth to third on 60 points from 33 games while Chelsea stayed 10th.

With the top three at the start of the day – Leicester City (72 points), Tottenham Hotspur (65) and Arsenal (59) – not playing, all the attention was focused on the bottom of the table where Norwich remain in 17th place on 31 points, nervously looking over their shoulders.

There was drama at The Hawthorns where Watford beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 after Saido Berahino missed two second-half penalties for the home side.

Watford keeper Heurelho Gomes guessed correctly both times, saving the first penalty in the 67th minute and the second in the 87th.

He became the first keeper in Premier League history to save two penalties in a match twice, the first time for Tottenham against Sunderland in 2010.

Ben Watson scored the only goal, volleying home a near-post corner in the first half.

Everton drew 1-1 with Southampton in the day’s other match.

Andertons on a roll Brian Anderton and his family crowned a memorable few days when Tommy Tucker triumphed in Saturday’s Listed Easter Cup at Riccarton.

The highly-respected breeder, trainer, owner and administrator prepares the seven-year-old with his son Shane and the gelding was ridden by his grandson Jacob Lowry in the Christchurch Casino-sponsored event.

Honoured as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to the racing industry earlier in the year, Anderton’s White Robe Lodge also sold the top lot at Friday’s NZB South Island Sale.

Wanganui trainer Kevin Myers went to $52,500 for the colt by resident stallion Raise The Flag, who stands alongside Tommy Tucker’s sire Gallant Guru at the Mosgiel stud.

“I’m elated for Ian, I trained for his grand-father and for his parents so it’s been a long association,” Anderton said. “There are always disappointments in racing though, and we broke in his full sister and she’s gone in the wind.”

Tommy Tucker has been regularly ridden by Lowry, who is apprenticed to Anderton, and the 18-year-old was confident of another bold showing from the seven-year-old, despite a most recent failure at Riverton.

“He’d worked well since his last start when the track was off and it was over 1200 metres and he was

doing his best work late,” he said.

Tommy Tucker’s sustained finish got him the thick end of the stake by the barest of margins from favourite Seize The Moment with El Sagrado a nose back.

Meanwhile Australian-bound filly No Pushover lived up to her name at Riccarton where she boosted her future value with a black type success.

The bargain buy made the jump from a maiden victory last month to a clear-cut win in Saturday’s NZB Insurance Stakes.

“It’s a really nice story and she was bought under a year ago at an NZB Sale for just $3000,” trainer Shaune Ritchie said.

He was asked by syndication company principal Kirk Devers, who operates under the KRD Racing & Thoroughbreds Racing banner, to have a look at the filly and Richie gave her a tick of approval.

“She had a parrot mouth, but apart from that she was very correct and now she’s a stakes winner,” he said.

Gutsy win for Warriors

BY DAVID SKIPWITH Warriors coach Andrew McFadden hailed his side’s character and composure to overcome the loss of fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and a halftime deficit to secure a 24-20 win over the Bulldogs in Wellington on Saturday night.

In the wake of last week’s limp home defeat to Manly, the Warriors produced a gutsy display after losing Tuivasa-Sheck to a knee injury in the 16th minute and came back from 8-14 down to overpower the visitors in the second-half for their third win of the season.

The 22-year-old twisted his knee awkwardly in a tackle in the ninth minute but had the leg strapped and tried to continue on before it buckled under him on his next attempted carry.

He will have scans today but Warriors defence coach Justin Morgan was hopeful that the injury was not as severe as first feared.

“Whether or not it’s internal damage or whether he just got a really bad knock on it and made the knee a little bit unstable we’re unsure at this point,” Morgan said.

“We should know a little bit more later today or first thing tomorrow.”

His departure did little to disrupt the Warriors, with Tui Lolohea handling the shift from five-eighth to fullback comfortably, before darting out of dummyhalf to score and put the Warriors back in front in the 50th minute.

After making just four runs against Manly, halfback Shaun Johnson was more involved and at the forefront of their attack, playing a part in four tries and kicking astutely to keep the Bulldogs pinned deep in the corners during the second-half.

McFadden praised his side’s commitment and their tenacity to shake off adversity and maintain their focus to dispose of one of the competition’s heavyweight sides.

“It certainly tests your character to be able to do that,” said McFadden.

“I don’t think I’ve had too many games here where we’ve come from behind, particularly against a quality side like the Bulldogs.

“The way we stuck at it, we were patient, we took our opportunities when we got them and then we were desperate defensively right at the end there.

“We’ve been under lots of pressure, there’s lots of expectation with us, and it’s hard.

“It’s challenging for the players and for them to deliver that performance tonight that shows the character that we have.

“But we have to back it up.”

However, unforced errors continued to plague them and they had to survive a nervous last 10 minutes after Bulldogs centre Kerrod Holland crossed for his second try to put the game back in the balance, but committed defence kept them at bay.

“Again, we managed to find a hard way to do it,” said McFadden.

“There were unforced errors coming out of our own end, [which] just put huge amounts of pressure on us.

“But we had to build some belief off coming from behind.

“It could have been tough for us but we managed to find a way to win so it was a really important victory for us.” - NZME

Milford masterful for the Broncos

BY LAINE CLARK Not everyone at Brisbane was happy with Anthony Milford after he inspired their 53-0 NRL rout of Newcastle at Suncorp Stadium.

Even Knights coach Nathan Brown could not help but marvel at Milford’s three-try masterclass on Saturday night.

However, Queensland hopeful Corey Oates admits he had a good-natured crack at Milford after he ignored support and

completed his hat-trick late in the 10-try romp.

Towering winger Oates was a Milford pass away from a club record equalling fourth try, joining the likes of Steve Renouf, Karmichael Hunt, Denan Kemp, Justin Hodges, Israel Folau and Wendell Sailor.

“I tried to make him feel bad,” Oates laughed.

“You try not to think about it but when it comes closer it’s like ‘give me the ball’.

“But there’s no hard feelings.

“He deserved three.”

Milford shone as Brisbane showed no mercy to an injury hit Knights.

He even twisted the knife by kicking a cheeky field goal on full-time.

Hard marking Brisbane master coach Wayne Bennett couldn’t fault Milford.

“He was with a lot of good players but when we got on top he just enjoyed his footy,” he said.

“He was having fun out there. It wasn’t hard for him.”

Currie defends XTERRA crown In a triumphant return to offroad racing, Methven’s Braden Currie defended his pro title at the Paymark XTERRA Rotorua Festival on Saturday.

The Red Bull endurance athlete crossed the finish line in 2.05.42secs ahead of Rotorua athlete Sam Osborne (2.07.23) and South Africa’s Bradley Weiss (2.11.33) at the Blue Lake course.

“I had so much fun and did everything I wanted to do yesterday (Saturday),” said Currie.

“It felt great to be back doing what I love and feeling stronger than I ever have.”

The 29-year-old was neck and neck with Osborne out of the

1km swim and into the mountain bike, but managed to pull away on a couple of the big climbs towards the end of the bike leg, before stretching out his lead on the 11km trail run.

“I’m back doing what I really enjoy and feel like after my triathlon training over the past few months that I have the ability to be more consistent across all three disciplines,” said Currie.

“My swimming is faster, my bike speed has improved, and I can gap it on the run.”

With speed however, there is always risk, and Currie had what he described as “an epic crash” on the 26km mountain bike section.

“I was just sitting on Sam’s wheel and just scored a wrong line and went straight over the bars at full speed and slipped down the bank on my shoulder and head,” he said.

“I came to a stop and collected my bike and lost all of my gels.

“In a way it was good, because it made me refocus.”

Getting straight back into XTERRA racing where he achieved his career-best result last year – second at the World Championships – was also a positive way for Currie to refocus after spending the past six months aiming for a spot in the New Zealand Olympic triathlon team.

Despite not making the team for Rio, Currie believes he has learnt a lot, and grown stronger as an athlete.

“It has been such a huge learning curve.

“I really enjoyed the change of racing disciplines and it has definitely taught me a few new tricks,” he said.

Currie’s coach and Triathlon NZ’s high performance coach Tim Brazier said an Olympic bid for anyone is a significant challenge and demands great sacrifice.

“For Braden, with only a short period of time, it was to be a big task mentally and physically to

step into a new realm of ITU triathlon - one that he took on with passion and determination,” said Brazier.

“Physically we had to work very hard to try to bring up his run speed and open water skills to meet the demands of ITU racing, which as we saw in Rotorua yesterday (Saturday), is having a great cross-over benefit.”

Currie will head to the XTERRA Asia-Pacific Championships next weekend in New South Wales, Australia, where he will aim to back up his 2015 victory, before having a break to decide what direction he will be taking next.
