A special visitor for Lagmhor School students

It was a blast from the past when Lagmhor’s oldest living pupil stepped foot inside her old school grounds on Thursday.

Janet Woods, now 93, attended the school in the early 1930s, and will be one of the many alumni celebrating the school’s centenary next year.

She said Lagmhor was a “very quiet” school at the time she and her older brothers and sisters attended.

Although it has remained small – with two classes and a school population of 37 today – she said it has grown into something very special.

“It’s such a beautiful school,” she said, “I’m glad to have seen it go ahead so well.”

Lagmhor operates out of two classrooms on a rural site located roughly 9km inland from Tinwald.

Faced with closure under a government policy, it merged with Ashburton Borough School in 2001 and now operates as a satellite school.

Among those who met Janet on Thursday was five-year-old Hunter, who is the youngest pupil at the school.

The centennial celebrations planned for next year will amass current and past pupils like Janet and Hunter, teachers, board members and more.

YMCA hoping for support

A successful programme benefiting hundreds of Ashburton high school students is reaching out for more community support.

The YMCA is holding an appeal to raise funds for their Resiliency Toolkit programme.

The programme was introduced to Ashburton earlier this year, and has successfully helped equip Year 9 to 13s with life skills like stress management, decision-making

around alcohol and drugs, peer mentoring, cyber safety and staying social media savvy.

It was implemented at Mount Hutt College this year and is also being introduced to Ashburton College, along with a number of other colleges throughout Mid and South Canterbury and the Mackenzie District.

Michelle Keggenhoff of the YMCA said the Resiliency Toolkit had been designed after a youth survey earlier this year, which

found young people wanting to be equipped with more information, particularly when it came to wellbeing.

“It came to light that young people are feeling stressed … they’re wanting better information about drugs and alcohol, sometimes their relationships with their families can be quite fraught,” she said.

“There’s lots of information around but young people aren’t always able to make the connec-

tion and apply the information practically.” She said the toolkit, which brings in real-life scenarios, has absolutely made a difference.

Students are surveyed before and after the programme, and Keggenhoff said the amount of students feeling confident in their ability to make good decisions usually rises from a low percentage to around 70 or 80 per cent.

However, she said the programme cannot operate without the support of the public.

“We don’t receive any funding, but it’s something we feel very passionate about,” she said.

“So we’re asking the community to get behind it and support the district’s young people.”

Swimming spots on black list

Coroner rules cliff fall an accident

Lake Hood’s main beach has received its first fail mark from Environment Canterbury in terms of swimming water quality.

It joins the Ashburton River at State Highway One as an area where swimming is not recommended.

Both now have a very poor rating for water quality.

In its latest recreational water quality sampling report over 52 monitored fresh water swimming sites, Ashburton has been delivered a mixed bag of results – very poor for the Ashburton River at State Highway One and for the main swimming beach at Lake Hood, but very good for Lakes Clearwater west of the huts, Lake

Camp at the beach and Lake Hood at Bayliss Beach.

From November to March ECan assesses the health risks from faecal contamination at these spots. Across Canterbury this year, 12 sites have improved, up on 10 improvements the previous year.

The Ashburton River at State Highway One received black marks for urban stormwater, the impact of intensive land use, run-off from low intensity agriculture, urban or rural catchments, and the incidence or density of bird life.

Lake Hood’s main beach had one fail mark, for the incidence and density of birdlife.

The lake swimming spot was ranked very good from 2012 to

2014 before dropping to fair for two years. It’s 2016–2017 ranking is the first bottom grade it has received.

In its report ECan indicated the ranking came from a dramatic increase in E coli levels. These are suspected to be sourced from an increase in the number of water fowl at the site.

This now puts this section of Lake Hood on the unsuitable list for swimming. It is one of just four sites in Canterbury where the quality grade has declined.

The lake’s other monitored site is considered safe. It has been consistently ranked as very good in terms of water quality.

The Ashburton River site has received a very poor ranking for the past seven years and it re-

mains unsuitable for swimming.

While Ashburton may have a new swimming spot on the watch list, across Canterbury monitoring data shows fresh water quality is improving.

ECan’s chief scientist Tim Davie said the improvement demonstrates the hard work of landowners to exclude stock and to protect waterways by planting and fencing. Reduced runoff from two dry summers had also helped, he said.

The Canterbury Water Management Strategy (2009) set a target of 80 per cent of Canterbury freshwater sites being graded swimmable by 2015. This has not been met but the number of sites that are now graded very good is increasing.

Yearlings stack up well against other breeds

Winchmore lowline breeder Gordon Guthrie admits to being pretty pleased with the performance of his stock at the Canterbury A&P Show, given the recognition achieved against other breeds.

Guthrie took two yearling heifers from his Ashmore Lowline Stud to the show, and came away with the third place ribbon in the Beef All Breeds category.

“We’re pretty happy to get that against all the other breeds. It puts us in the big boys’ game,” Guthrie said.

The yearling heifer class always attracts plenty of high quality entries, he said, so third place was a notable achievement.

“We would have been happy with a place in the top six.”

Guthrie said he has been showing his stock for more than 15 years and while there was a commercial aspect to it, getting recognition for your animals and putting them in front of potential buyers, that was not the only reason why he got involved.

“Personally, I like preparing them,” he said.

“Taking them out of the paddock and then getting them to lead on halter, to move on command.”

Guthrie and his wife Debbie established the Ashmore Lowline Stud in 1996 with the purchase of five quality mature heifers from an Australian breeder.

Today they run about 120 purebred Lowline cattle on 32 hectares on the Methven highway.

A former Ashburton man’s death after he stumbled and fell off a cliff while having his photo taken at a Canterbury gorge has been ruled an accident.

Darryl Richard Kitto, 47, who was intellectually disabled and had two caregivers, fell down the Rakaia Gorge cliff on April 17, 2016.

Coroner Sue Johnson released her findings into Mr Kitto’s death on Friday, ruling it was an accidental but preventable death.

Mr Kitto had been standing about two metres from the cliff’s edge when his caregiver stepped back to take his photo.

In these few seconds, Mr Kitto, who had stepped down to a lower mound to fit in the photo, stumbled and fell around 30-40m over the cliff.

Ms Johnson said there was no evidence anyone knew how dangerous the steep slope was.

A 4.2 magnitude earthquake has been felt near Christchurch.

It had a depth of 19km and struck 20km west of the city at 2.52pm, reported Geonet.

Callers to Newstalk ZB described it as a “good shake”, strong enough to make pictures fall from walls and knock ornaments off tables. Geonet said it may have been felt in Akaroa, Amberley, Arthur’s Pass, Ashburton, Christchurch, Culverden, Methven, Oxford and surrounding areas. Nearly 4000 people reported feeling the quake. - NZME

Black-billed gull chick

Space at a premium along Ashburton River Competition for real estate on the edge of the Ashburton River mouth is hot at this time of the year.

Beyond the four-wheel drivers and white-baiters, keen bird watchers might spy a family of rare black billed gulls or terns hatching their young on river mouth’s small shingle islands.

For the last two years volunteers from the Hakatere community and Ashburton Forest and Bird have been working with Environment Canterbury staff to erect around 1.5km of fences to remind people there are critically endangered birds nesting there.

With around 8,800 black-billed gulls and 2,500 white-fronted terns calling the Ashburton River mouth home, the site has been identified as one of the most important river habitats for shore birds in New Zealand.

Volunteers needed to share life skills

A Methven man is about to embark on an expedition into unexplored terrain in the Antarctic.

Rob Teasdale is among a group preparing to set out on an epic 1000-kilometre journey to find a safe route through to the Siple Coast, an area scientists plan to study next year as part of their research into how climate change is affecting the South Pole.

“It’s been weeks of hard work getting to where we are, and with one traverse already complete and the next about to start, mostly I’m just feeling like a day off,” Teasdale said from Scott Base on Tuesday.

The Mt Hutt Ski Area fleet co-ordinator, who is also an avalanche rescue dog enthusiast, had returned from an overland traverse on to the Ross Ice Shelf, 350km away, transporting equipment in preparation for hot-water drilling.

Similar work is to be undertaken at Siple Coast, as scientists need to get deep into the ice.

The course his group would be taking had been plotted using the latest visual and radar satellite imagery. It had shown significantly crevassed icefields and much of just how the journey would unfold was unknown.

“We’ll be using ground-penetrating radar fitted to a Pisten Bully to locate hidden crevasses and moving our way cautiously along one step at a time,” Teasdale said.

He said he would have his last shower for two months before leaving and he planned to be back in New Zealand by the end of January.

Lead scientist for the Siple Coast project, Gary Wilson, said from Scott Base yesterday that the team would use a route taken by American programme personnel for the first 700km, but after that they would just “turn left”.

“There’s no sign post,” he said.

“This is a major change for the New Zealand programme, going to places that you need to go, to answer the questions that you need answered, rather than to places that are easy to get to and have not got the same answers,” Wilson said.

Most people take their life skills for granted, but a growing number of people in the Ashburton community need a little help with some of life’s basics.

And providing that help is the job of Marie McNulty. She’s the SEEDS (sharing everyday experiences and drawing on life skills) family wellbeing programme co-ordinator and, with her team of volunteers, works to pass on practical life skills to parents who need help.

SEEDS is a free programme that matches a family or parent with a trained volunteer parent support worker, but McNulty is currently short of volunteers. Two of her team have moved out of the district and she’s keen to rebuild ranks so she can meet what is a steady demand for help.

Volunteers are trained to pass on practical household skills that will help parents feel more confident and also to help them learn parenting tips that can reduce stress about the day-to-day activities of parenting.

Those skills could include parenting routines, time management, coping with stress, child health and well-being, nutrition, menu planning, cooking and baking, budgeting, sewing and garment repairs, housekeeping and hygiene.

McNulty meets with new clients before they are matched with a volunteer.

“And we match people up very carefully,” she said.

All volunteers are carefully vetted and undergo a police check.

The service is confidential and non-judgmental, and aimed at parents with preschoolaged children.

Volunteers are required to commit to one hour per week to the project, but some choose to spend more with their clients, McNulty said.

“We’re looking for people with good empathy, who’re good listeners and who have good life skills.”

Some mentors build a friendship with their clients that continues once the three months are up.

A pool of around 12 volunteers is maintained

by SEEDS but client numbers are growing, McNulty said.

“We’ve got some amazing women who’re doing this work. If you have raised children of your own, know how to bake or sew, and know how to make your money stretch when times are tight, we’d love to talk to you.”

The rise and fall of the electric tractor

Today’s motorists might be heralding the arrival of electric cars, but vehicles powered by electricity have a history that stretches back to 1930.

Those early electric vehicles were light years away from today’s sleek, futuristic models; they were heavy-duty tractors. There was no battery storage, rather they were connected to their power supply by a long cable.

Ashburton man Michael Hanrahan has published a book telling the story of those tractors, Power to the Land. It explores the district’s fledgling electric tractor industry, one that was world leading.

The story of the district’s electric tractor industry is also the story of Ashburton man Herbert George Kemp. He was secretary and engineer of the Ashburton Electric Power Board under whose auspices the tractors were built and marketed.

When Kemp started tinkering with the prototype for an electric tractor, similar vehicles were in the experimentation stages in several other countries, but it was with a model trialling in Sweden that Ashburton’s tractor was closest in style.

“This model was the one that

was most likely to succeed,” Hanrahan said.

When the power was turned on, the first electric tractor moved four feet under power. A cause for celebration.

As the years ticked by there were seven working in the district,

trailing long cables behind them.

Their range was sufficient to work a 30-acre paddock.

For the power board, the electric tractor was seen as a way to move the consumption of power beyond farm homesteads and on to the farm.

Today only one remains, owned by the Tarbotton family. The rest were stripped down during the war and their parts reused. The last tractor was built in 1937. Most clocked about 4000 hours.

There are plans to restore the remaining tractor with the goal to get it to a point where it can run with a trailer towing a generator behind it.

In writing his book, as his main resource, Hanrahan used photocopies of decades of correspondence Kemp had compiled during his tractor development.

Kemp corresponded widely with experts in several countries, particularly Russia, and eventually shared many of his findings with fellow inventors.

Hanrahan’s passion for vintage machinery is lifelong. The story of electric tractors captured his imagination decades ago. The story was one he wanted to tell and the book that’s been published this month had its origins in the 1970s.

“This has intrigued me for a very long time. I didn’t even have a typewriter, let alone a computer, then so I made a handwritten

version of the book. I only started writing it seriously last year when I retired,” he said.

Hanrahan was manager of the Ashburton Museum for several years and already had several books to his name when Power to the Land was published.

As much as it is the story of electric tractors, Power to the Land is also the story of Kemp. It tells of a man who paid his own way to war after being turned down by the New Zealand Army, who served as a dispatcher and cycled all over wartime Europe and who served 40 years in the top job at EA Networks’ predecessor, the Ashburton Power Board.

He is also the man credited with rebuilding the scouting movement in the district post-World War Two. At that time there was one scout troop at St Stephen’s and one cub pack in Methven.

When Kemp had finished there were 500 scouts and 100 leaders in the district.

In his honour the Kemp Gate was installed at Mania-O-Roto park.

There’s a new kid on the block when it comes to Japanese cuisine in Ashburton.

Koji Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar has opened its doors on Creek Road and is ready to roll out lunch and dinner options galore.

The restaurant opened earlier in the week, and offers dine-in and takeaway meals from sushi, sashimi, tempura, salad and lunch boxes, to curries, udon, bento bowls and donburi. It is also fully licensed.

Manager Mikee You said two successful Koji restaurants in Timaru – one sushi bar and one teppanyaki restaurant – had preceded the latest opening in Ashburton.

The restaurant is located at 51 Creek Road and open from Tuesday to Sunday, for lunch between 11am and 2pm, and dinner between 5pm and 9pm.

Closure extended The closure of fisheries along the Kaikoura coast following the November 2016 earthquake has been extended. The Ministry for Primary Industries has deemed the marine environment had not recovered enough. It applies to all shellfish and seaweed, but excludes crayfish and scampi, and extends from Marfell’s Beach to the Conway River.

Bringing loved ones together T

he Cancer Society is one of New Zealand’s strongest support groups.

It does sterling work providing assistance across a wide range of areas for both clients and their families and, like many such organisations, it runs on the strength of its volunteers and on the willingness of the community to provide financial support.

A new fundraising arm this year is a recipe book. The society has drawn on

its huge network of supporters, staff and clients to source recipes and it’s called in favours from a handful of celebrity chefs.

The book, The Food Connection, is about the way in which food can bring people together in times of happiness, sadness, celebration and grief.

It contains recipes that will challenge the experienced cook and recipes that are easily completed by those with little experience.

ast year there were 250 cases of elder abuse reported in Canterbury; some of those involved Ashburton’s elderly.

And with the number of reported cases increasing – up 70 in the past 12 months – Age Concern Canterbury is upping its involvement in the Ashburton District planning to employ an elder abuse support person in Ashburton.

For many years Ashburton’s elder abuse service has been under the umbrella of Canterbury Age Concern but the focus is about to become more finely focused and delivered on home turf, says Age Concern Canterbury chief executive Simon Templeton.

With a trained staff member based in Ashburton there will be much more easily accessed and more readily available assistance for people in need, he said.

“It’s less about education and awareness and more about face-to-face client interaction and support. It’ll provide connectivity with the people delivering the service.”

While the driver was to provide a better face-to-face service in Ashburton, this would need to be funded through a funding partner, Templeton said.

“The ideal would be to employ a person down in Ashburton, even two days a week.

We’d look to train a health professional to do this but first the key has to be finding the funding partner.

“Our contract with the ministry is for three years, so hopefully we’d be looking for funding to support the programme for this timeframe.”

Templeton suggests a philanthropic donation of around $35,000 a year would be needed to ensure Ashburton had its own elder abuse support person. He’s suggesting it could be supported by rates.

“What we’ve seen in other areas is that the local council steps in and tops up the funding for the three years.

“This model operates in both Blenheim and Nelson.”

Currently an older person who wanted help or anyone concerned about an elderly person was being abused in any way could talk to a health professional on an 0800 number. They would then be referred to the appropriate agency or third party intervention would be provided.

Having a trained person on the ground

offered a much more personalised and more immediate service, Templeton said.

Elder abuse was one of the most underreported social crimes, he said, largely because the abuser was most often a family member. More than half are adult children and grandchildren.

“And because it’s predominantly an adult child abusing a parent, there’s a real sense of shame.”

Elder abuse could be physical, neglect, emotional or financial but generally 50 per cent of it was financial.

“There’s definitely more abuse happening than we’re seeing and local connectivity with the district is what we’re needing. We have a staff member who can deliver this service but it’s not the same as having a person on the ground.”

International studies show that between 3 to 10 per cent of older people experience abuse or neglect each year. It happens to men and women of every religious, cultural, ethnic and income group. However, much abuse goes unreported Each year, Age Concern’s Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention (EANP) services receive more than 2000 referrals for older people who may be facing elder abuse or neglect. That’s eight referrals every working day.

Almost half of abused older people are over 80 and one-third live alone.

Abuse is often identified by support agencies such as health providers, police, lawyers, and other community support organisations rather than being reported by a victim.

For the elderly, the losses associated with abuse can be devastating and include the loss of independence, homes, life savings, health, dignity and security.

Elder abuse also damages family relationships, causing isolation and loneliness, grief and great sadness to the older person.

Financial abuse can erode assets and savings so that the older person may find it difficult to buy essential medications, or pay health or dental care.

Older people may be reluctant to seek help because they may blame themselves for the abuse, be ashamed because the abuser is a family member and they depend on them for support, they don’t want to make a fuss, they don’t have the confidence to speak out and often because they don’t know who to tell.

This is a quick and easy salad.

Serves 4 2C snow peas 3C cherry tomatoes 1/2 packet snow pea sprouts, sliced in half 1-2 shallots, peeled and finely chopped 1T lemon juice 1T olive oil Freshly ground black pepper, to taste 1t sugar ■ Blanch snow peas in rapidly boiling water for 2-3 minutes until bright green and still a little crunchy. Remove and cool in iced water or under cold running water to prevent further cooking. Drain well. Slice in half.

Weak sunscreens pulled from shelves Two sunscreens have been pulled from New Zealand shelves after tests revealed they weren’t nearly as protective as advertised, a consumer advocacy group says.

Consumer NZ is now calling for mandatory standards for the industry.

The group says the maker of Pure Blend Sunscreen SPF15++ will stop selling the product after tests showed it to only actually have a sun protection factor – or SPF – of four.

Snowberry’s Family+ Sunscreen SPF30 has also been recalled after it was found to only have and SPF

of 20. Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin says neither of the products had actually been tested on people before going to market, despite the Australian- New Zealand standard requiring an assessment on at least 10 volunteers.

The core issue was New Zealand’s sunscreen standards were voluntary, she said.

“While companies are encouraged to comply with the Australian-New Zealand standard, it’s clear some don’t,” she said.

The group will be testing more sunscreens later in the year. - NZME

Former Mount Hutt College deputy head girl Olie Body and her business partner Marie Larking are almost half way to raising $12,500 towards their New Zealand-wide social enterprise.

“Our purpose is simple, it’s to keep students in class and give them the freedom to live a healthy lifestyle by preventing period poverty,” Body said yesterday.

Wa Collective provides menstrual cups which can last up to 10 years, and have so far saved students $26,000 and prevented 72,000 menstrual productions from going to landfill.

Body and Larking have set up a PledgeMe page, and are raising money towards the Collective, which also aims to break down the taboo around periods.

A poultry giant plans to set up a broiler chicken farm in Northland with a capacity to stock up to 1.3 million chickens and employ 28 people.

Tegel Foods has applied to the Overseas Investment Office for the green light to buy just over 250 hectares of land at Arapohue, 16km south east of Dargaville.

The company — which requires OIA permission as it is part-owned by overseas interests — has lodged a resource consent application with the Kaipara District Council.

In its application, Tegel said each of the 32 sheds housing the chickens would be 20m wide by 130m long and 4.5m high.

Broiler chickens would be raised onsite and then transported to Tegel’s processing plant in Henderson, West Auckland, for slaughtering, packaging and distribution.

Broilers are raised purely for meat and reach slaughter-weight at five-to-seven weeks.

Slower-growing breeds take about 14 weeks.

our school years might not be exactly memorable, they might not be ones you want to relive, but they’re an important part of your life.

Primary, secondary, those years are the ones that shape you as the adult you become, the people you sat alongside, played sport with, shared your life secrets with, they know you better than anyone else.

Time erodes many of those relationships, friendships fade, people move to different parts of the world to live. But even with time and distance, that bond of shared school years remains.

Many schools have strong old student associations. They’re the glue that binds adults to their school years. Regular news letters, regular events and regular fundraising efforts all serve to keep past students involved.

Ashburton College now has a 52-year history but until recently it did not have an alumni, an organisation that would link past students to today’s school. Now it does.

A small group of past students has been working tirelessly to establish the old pupils’ network.

It’s drawn on the success stories of other schools around New Zealand and it now has a model that has every reason to succeed.

In fact it probably has more than 20,000 reasons to succeed.

Over its 52 years, each year the college has welcomed an intake of at least 250 Year 9 students.

Add to students from its foundation schools Ashburton High and Hakatere College and the pool of possible members is enormous.

Key for the alumni’s success is tracking down ex-students, creating awareness of the organisation and encouraging them to walk down the path that will link them to their past.

YOUR VIEW Open letter from MP Andrew Falloon to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern Dear Prime Minister, Congratulations on your election result, and subsequent appointment as New Zealand’s 40th Prime Minister.

I write concerning one of your policies and the potentially very serious impact it would have on my electorate of Rangitata.

You’ll be aware that unemployment nationally is nearing its lowest levels in a decade, at just 4.6%.

In Canterbury that figure is just 3.6%. Statistics New Zealand do not provide data at a sub-regional level, but I’d suggest unemployment in Mid Canterbury and South Canterbury, which make up the Rangitata electorate, wouldn’t be much more than 2 per cent.

Our local economy is growing strongly. Jobs are available, and employers find it hard to find potential staff.

It isn’t a question of a mismatch in skills or of employers not willing to train young people - we simply don’t have enough people to do the jobs that are available.

Many employers have turned to recruiting internationally, bringing skilled

and semi-skilled people here on work visas. It’s helped create a vibrant, multicultural community in our wonderful part of New Zealand. On the whole, migrants here on work visas, and those who are able to stay longer, have integrated well into the towns they’ve made home.

Prior to the election you made clear that the Labour Party’s policy is to cut inward net migration by “20,000 to 30,000” from 70,000. Your coalition partner, NZ First, went further, suggesting it should be cut to just 10,000. The Greens have also previously indicated they favour a cut to migrant numbers.

I accept that the formation of a new Government has given you a mandate to implement your policies.

However, I’m sure you will accept that when you and your party have spoken of the need to cut migration, the reasons you’ve given have almost entirely related to urban centres like Auckland.

Growth in Mid Canterbury and South Canterbury should not be a casualty of setting national migration targets focussed solely on Auckland.

A cut to migrant numbers of the levels that you talked about prior to the election would have a catastrophic effect on my local economy. Without access to labour, growth would stall, and towns like Ashburton and Timaru would grind to a halt.

I’d ask that when, after your first 100 days, you do look to set the new Government’s migration policy, that you consider the position of regional New Zealand, particularly in places like Mid and South Canterbury.

e have just finished appointing teachers for two positions beginning

in 2018.

The tension, the nerves, the faltering answers and shortness of breath – reminded me of the first time I went in for a kiss on my first girlfriend!

As per usual the applicants were nervous and not sure how they would go. Now I have sat through a large number of teacher interviews and been through them myself.

So I reckon I have some seriously rock-solid advice that can get you through and land the job of your dreams.

Stick with me as I lay out five strategies to dazzle them in interview room.

Number One: Flatter them.

Go through what’s online and pick out some gems about the company and drop them into your answers.

Typically you can be asked why you have applied for the position. Using their own info, inform them that you are applying because you see it as an excellent opportunity to match a hardworking individual with such an innovative organisation as themselves.

Number Two: Fake it till you make it. You get asked what initiatives have you led where you are currently employed.

Being the complete fake it type, inform them you implemented staff well-being sessions

on a regular basis during the work day – (in other words you took long morning teas and lunches with your workmates and sometimes slipped in a liquid lunch from the local tavern).

No one is going to check this answer because staff well-being is something everyone agrees they should do well but no-one believes it’s worth it.

Number Three: Answer with a question. Politicians use this all the time to dodge the serious stuff. So when you get asked about a specific strength you embellished in your CV, don’t answer.

Ask them in what context this strength will benefit the company. This buys you time while they answer, so you can come up with a complete bollocks answer yourself – (see the next strategy).

Number Four: Baffle with jargon. Seriously, google specific vocab about your industry and put it together in a couple of phrases you memorise. Here’s a good example.

See brilliant! You don’t know what you are talking about, they don’t understand what you said, but are too scared to ask what you meant because it would mean they would look dumb.

Number Five: Have a water bottle. This is pure gold so use it and use it well. A water bottle serves many purposes, here are some of them.

When someone walks in with water bottle, everyone feels guilty because they believe you are a fitness freak and they should be doing something about their own health. That means they are on the back foot from the start.

When you need stalling time to answer a question, take a sip and think. You can also write statements from your CV onto a self-designed label and glue it onto the water bottle. This means you have answers there for yourself.

If it gets really hairy, either drink it all and ask to use the loo so you can google some answers or, spill the whole lot on yourself and ask to use the loo to dry off.

Of course you are actually on your phone to a mate asking for help.

So there you go. When it comes to interviews, stick to these strategies and you can’t go wrong – just don’t use them on me, because I will be the one in the room with a water bottle.

Mugabe is urged to step down peacefully Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe was meeting with a South African delegation at the state house as negotiations pushed for a resolution to the political turmoil and the likely end to his decades-long reign.

South Africa President Jacob Zuma, speaking in parliament, said the political situation “very shortly will be becoming clear” but that it was too early to take any firm decision. The talks include the military and, reportedly, the Catholic church.

Seizing on the political limbo to speak out, civil society groups and opposition leaders urged Mugabe to step aside after 37 years in power and for the country to transition into free and fair elections.

“In the interest of the people, Mr Robert Mugabe must resign and step down immediately,” Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the Movement for Democratic Change, told a news conference, reading from a statement.

Mugabe has been in military custody, reportedly with his wife, and there was no sign of the recently fired deputy Emmerson Mnangagwa, who fled the country last week.

The military remained in the streets of Harare. Southern African regional officials were meeting in neighbouring Botswana on the crisis.

A joint statement by more than 100 civil society groups urged Mugabe, the world’s oldest head of state, to peacefully step aside and asked the military to quickly restore order and respect the constitution. A joint statement by churches also appealed for calm.

Teary Grenfell survivors collect items

More than 200,000 personal possessions have been salvaged from Grenfell Tower’s wreckage during a poignant recovery process which reduced many survivors to tears.

Michael Lockwood, who has overseen work at the gutted block, said items of great sentimental value, including jewellery and photos, had been reunited with their owners.

Hundreds of families were left homeless when a fire raged through the building on June 14, with police now believing the final death toll to be 71, including a stillborn child.

Residents feared that many mementos had been lost forever that night as they were forced to run from the building through corridors clogged with smoke.

But more than 50 people, survivors of the lower floors and accompanying friends and relatives, were allowed to return to the tower to retrieve belongings over the past six weeks, Lockwood said.

Access to the site has been

restricted as police carry out a painstaking investigation, including the removal of the dead.

Lockwood said he had spent a lot of time with survivors.

“One of the things they said to me was, ‘We want to go back in to the tower. There are some very sentimental and precious items for us, whether it’s jewellery or photographs, and we only want to collect those’.

“We had 40 of the survivors, we stood in front of them and said, ‘You can go back in to the building’, and every one of them was in tears of joy and they said to me, ‘This is the first time we’ve ever been listened to’.”

More than 3500 supports are propping up bowed ceilings and floors in the tower, while scaffolding three times the normal density is reaching through to the building’s core to stabilise it.

This has allowed a 150-strong recovery team comprising forensics staff, investigators and contractors to safely work “with great care, dignity and respect”.

Conviction overturned Disgraced entertainer Rolf Harris has had one of 12 indecent assault convictions overturned by the Court of Appeal. Three judges in London ruled that the conviction was “unsafe”. But they rejected applications by Harris, 87, to challenge 11 other indecent assault convictions. The judges announced their decision this week. The artist and musician was convicted of 12 indecent assaults at London’s Southwark Crown Court in June 2014.

Shield runs at a premium

Two weeks in to the Pritchard Shield and all teams seem to be struggling to build an innings, while no team has put on back-toback victories.

Despite the competition being based on 45-over games, no team has seen out the 45 overs in an innings this season, with Allenton’s 36 overs last week the longest innings yet.

The runs have also been missing so far

this season, with defending champions Allenton’s first innings total of 139 last week the highest so far.

The innings was carried by four scores however, with Matt Tait and Sean Strange and the extras column all hitting double figures, while the rest of the defending champions’ batsmen failed to fire.

Despite a relaxed attitude heading into the cricket season, only having one win from the T20, the Pritchard Shield is likely to be concerning for captain Jeff Naish,

and they will need to win this weekend to settle the nerves and reinforce the idea that they are the best team in the competition.

Standing between them and the precious W is Coldstream.

After only rocking up with eight players in the first round and losing accordingly, they put Methven to the sword with the ball in hand, restricting them to 70 runs last week, and were able to chase it down quickly, but did lose five wickets in the process.

In the other match of the day, Lauriston will play host to Methven.

Bowling will likely play the most important role in the match, with Lauriston needing to keep Methven’s Davey Maw, Matt Winter and Mitch Sim quiet, like Coldstream were able to do.

Lauriston will be fresh up after the bye last week, and will likely look to Matt Pawsey and Alex Hooper for the wickets.

The much improved Tech side will have a well-deserved rest this week with the bye.

Sevens exponents gear up for tournament Next weekend the Mid Canterbury sevens side will kick off their season at the North Otago Rugby Referees Sevens tournament.

Under the coaching of Rakaia’s Sean Carter, they will be looking to defend their title in the build up to the South Island tourna-

ment, which will be held in early December.

Should they perform well enough, they will book them-

selves a place at the annual national sevens tournament which is set to held this year in Rotorua.

Late fade haunts ABs

By GreGor Paul The All Blacks coaches are looking as much for answers in Edinburgh as they are a victory.

They took a risk earlier in the season when they rested a handful of senior players mid-way through the Rugby Championship.

A host of regulars didn’t play against the Pumas in New Plymouth and the heavyweight brigade of Sam Whitelock, Brodie Retallick, Sam Cane, Liam Squire and Ryan Crotty didn’t travel to Argentina a couple of weeks later.

The Pumas haven’t had a great season, don’t pose the same sort of dangers they once did, but still, the All Blacks potentially made themselves vulnerable by weakening their side.

But it wasn’t random.

The risk was calculated.

It was a decision they hoped would reap reward on the end of year tour where they would face France, Scotland and Wales in consecutive weeks.

The theory was simple: don’t use up so much of the top players’ petrol in September and October and presumably there will be more in the tank come November where the harder challenges lay.

Having justified the risk by beating the Pumas twice, the All Blacks now need to see whether the second part of their strategy can pay dividend.

What they need to see at Murrayfield, and next week in Cardiff, is an emphatic performance from what is essentially their top side.

The young guns fired against the Pumas so now there is considerable pressure on those who sat out those games, to do their bit and hit Scotland hard.

The coaching staff need to find out whether the petrol theory is accurate – that players can be successfully managed throughout the year to ensure they can reach the last few games with enough mental and physical energy to play commanding rugby.

If that proves to be the case, it will give ample confidence about how to tackle next year when the All Blacks are likely to face an even tougher run to the tape, including Australia and England as opposition.

So the team that has been picked to play Scotland, reflects how much the All Blacks need to know whether their mid-season management strategy has value.

The Scots will expect to be stronger this week than they were last when they were defensively loose against Samoa.

Still, they did potentially present an opportunity for the All Blacks to tweak their match day 23 and consider a few options such as giving Asafo Aumua a run off the bench; or rewarding Patrick Tuipulotu’s storming effort in Lyon with a spot somewhere in the mix.

With Kieran Read’s groin a minor concern at the end of last week, the test in Edinburgh could have been a chance to elevate Akira Ioane.

They could have asked David Havili to start at fullback.

No doubt, if circumstances had been different, those options and others may have been considered.

But not this time. Not on this trip. Those selections can stay on hold. This test isn’t one to try to find out about a few lesser known players – it is about finding out how much character, resilience and desire is held within the senior core.

Can they front in mid-November as well as they did in midJune? They weren’t able to do that last year when they hit an invisible wall at this stage of the season.

That late season fade was a metaphorical rock under the towel for the coaches once they got back to New Zealand’s summer.

They didn’t like seeing their team look as vulnerable as they did which is why they are determined to finish this season by storming down the home straight.

RugbyWA said it doesn’t have the cash to settle the $1.14 million owed to the WA Government for the 2009 stadium upgrade of nib Stadium, plus the legal costs that Rugby Australia are chasing. Rugby Australia, formerly the ARU, axed the Western Force earlier this year, and they are chasing RugbyWA for the legal costs associated with the subsequent Supreme Court appeal.

The Dark Blues are yet to beat the All Blacks in 112 years of international rugby and face Steve Hansen’s side for the first time since 2014 in Edinburgh this weekend. Townsend has enjoyed a promising start to his career as head coach of Scotland, with a landmark win over Australia in the summer hinting at a new era for Scottish rugby. “No team is perfect, but New Zealand over the years have been close to that. Somejoy does it tough New Zealand’s leading driver Blair Orange had to be razorsharp to avert disaster with favourite Somejoy in the in the $30,000 Macca Lodge ‘Trained South Of The Waitaki’ Mobile Pace at Addington yesterday.

It was an ‘Orangeathon’ as described the Trackside’s Greg O’Connor early doors on the Addington programme, with the in-form reinsman taking out three of the first four.

Orange said he was “very lucky” to stay in the race on Somejoy, prepared at Rakauhauka in Southland by Clark Barron.

“I had just pushed one out of the way to follow John Dunn (driving second favourite Pantastic) when his horse galloped,” Orange said.

He had to take a sharp hold of Somejoy and switched her inside the breaking Pantastic within a couple of seconds.

They lost around five lengths in the incident but virtually didn’t miss a beat getting back to race speed, tacking on with three-wide cover down the back.

Patsys Lass out to make an impact A long range black type mission will have a happy ending if Patsys Lass can make an impact in her second appearance at Riccarton.

Pukekohe trainer Eamonn Green sent the filly to Christchurch early with today’s Listed Barneswood Farm Welcome Stakes (1000m) as her major southern objective.

Patsys Lass earned her away trip after a tidy trial at Ruakaka and she finished fourth, after being hampered at barrier rise, behind the unbeaten Avantage on debut at Riccarton last month.

“I mapped it all out about six weeks ago after she ran second

“She’s going well and she’s learning to get out of the gates better. She’s improving all the time.”

Patsys Lass’ work has been up to the mark and she will again be ridden by the experienced Christchurch-based jockey Terry Moseley.

“She had a good gallop last Saturday and did a bit of three quarter pace on Wednesday,” Green said.

“I’m very pleased with her.”

The daughter of Savabeel is out of the O’Reilly mare Patsy O’Reilly, who definitely made

her mark on the racetrack.

“I bred Patsys Lass and the mother won four races for me,” Green said.

“She’s her second foal and I’ve also got a yearling colt by Tavistock.”

While Patsys Lass’ task today has been made a little easier with the absence of Avantage, who is suffering from shin soreness, she will still have to contend with that filly’s stablemate Al Hasa.

The Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards-trained colt overcame a tardy start on debut to finish runner-up at Ellerslie last month.

Hartley confirmed for F1

By Dale BuDge Kiwi Brendon Hartley will drive for Toro Rosso fulltime in Formula 1 in 2018 with Red Bull finally confirming the deal yesterday.

Hartley made his Formula 1 debut at the US Grand Prix in Austin in October and has competed in Mexico and Brazil since.

The 28-year-old has been linked with a permanent drive for weeks but it was only confirmed by the team yesterday that he and French team-mate Pierre Gasly will be the team’s drivers next season.

“We’re really happy to have Pierre and Brendon confirmed so early by Red Bull as our drivers for 2018”, said team principal Franz Tost.

“During this last part of the year they’ve shown that they’re ready for Formula 1, getting to grips with the car quickly, showing good performances and always demonstrating to be prepared for the challenge.

“As we know, F1 is something that not all drivers can adapt to this fast.

“Therefore, we’re looking forward to having a full year with them; one where we can hopefully provide them with a good package which, combined with driver consistency, can surely put them in the best possible situation to deliver.”

Toro Rosso will run Honda power units in 2018 and Hartley will be expected to help provide feedback to the team and help get the car further up the raceday grid.

Dawid Malan has become England’s second centurion in their last warm-up match ahead of the Ashes, working his way to 109 against a Cricket Australia XI. In what appears certain to be England’s last full dig before next week’s first test, the visitors went to lunch on day three at 7-439 in Townsville with a first-innings lead of 189. Malan scored his first century in English colours to guarantee his spot at No.5 ahead at the Gabba.

Levi happy to start on home ground Rookie hooker Danny Levi is hoping to provide the spark to reignite the Kiwis Rugby League World Cup campaign in today’s quarter-final against Fiji in Wellington.

The 21-year-old Wellington product is set to enjoy a special homecoming in front of family and friends at Westpac Stadium in his first test start following three impressive outings off the bench throughout the pool stages.

The occasion marks something of a changing of the guard for the Kiwis, with Levi usurping 41-test veteran Thomas Leuluai following last week’s shock 28-22 defeat to Tonga, while his place in the 24-man squad came at the expense of another one of his idols in former Kiwis star Issac Luke.

“Getting this chance to start is a massive honour for me and I’m just excited to get out there,” said Levi.

“I’m definitely going to cherish it. All the family is going to be there and I’m excited to get out there and do my best.”

The Randwick junior’s arrival in the test arena comes after he made the move across the Tasman as a teenager, first playing in the Penrith competition before eventually settling in at Newcastle as captain of the Knights under 20s.

Under the guidance of two former hookers in Newcastle coach Nathan Brown and Knights icon Danny Buderus, his game has flourished in 49 first grade appearances since making his NRL debut in 2015.

Along with fellow young forwards Nelson Asofa-Solomona and Joseph Tapine, Levi has injected plenty of youthful enthusiasm into the Kiwis play.

Boasting speed out of dummy-

Danny Levi half and a crisp pass, he has the pace and smarts to play an uptempo style to compliment the work of halves Shaun Johnson and Te Maire Martin.

“I’ve been behind a quality forward pack and they’ve definitely got a good roll-on and quick play the balls, so I’m just taking opportunities off the back of them,” he said.

“I’ve just been lucky.”

Experienced front-rower Jared Waerea-Hargreaves praised Levi’s

contribution off the bench and is eager to see him unleashed from the opening whistle this weekend.

“We’ve had Koro there, Tommy, starting with all of that experience but with Danny, he brings that energy,” said Waerea-Hargreaves.

“I just heard him talking about Issac Luke, he modelled his game around him and I see his game is very similar.

“It’s a credit to Danny, the way he’s been playing and I’m looking forward to him getting out there and doing the damage.”

Today’s match will come as a reward not just for Levi, but also his parents, Danny and Dhana, who he credits for setting him on his way to test stardom.

“They’re massively proud of me.

“It’s been pretty surreal from where it all started but I just took my opportunities and without the help of them I wouldn’t be here today.”
