Jetboat series to restart after death A jetboat racing series in which a competitor was tragically killed on Sunday will today resume on the Rakaia River. The World Championship Jetboat Marathon, which runs over the course of a week, has been on hold since Sunday morning when 47-year-old competitor, Duayne Insley, died while competing on the Waimakariri River. Insley was navigating the course alongside Dwayne Perry on the second day of the competition when he was struck by a log protruding from the bank of the river and killed. Racing was brought to an immediate halt following the accident and race organisers made the decision to cancel
racing yesterday and to resume today on the Rakaia with an extra leg of the competition to be added when they tackle the Waitaki River tomorrow. But event spokesman, Paul Mullan said the championships were now more about getting back out on the water as opposed to the actual outcome of the races. “As you can imagine with the tragedy, nobody is focused on the results, and we will just be regrouping tomorrow (today) and getting back in to the action,” he said. Investigations into the accident on Sunday are still continuing and are now being led by Police. The boat is believed to have been travelling at speeds in excess of 160km/h
Don’t get
when the log was struck. Perry, who had been racing alongside Insley for a number of years and had enjoyed World Championship success with him in 2013 has vowed to never race again. Racing today begins at 10am with the first of two legs travelling 85km from the Rakaia lagoon up to the Rakaia Gorge Bridge before the second leg will see competitors travel downstream and back to the Rakaia Lagoon.
