McCarthy wants ﬁnal Playboy shoot Model-turned-actress Jenny McCarthy is happy to strip off for Playboy magazine one more time for its last ever nude shoot. Executives at the saucy magazine, which launched in 1953, announced this week that naked photographs of models will no longer appear in the publication from March, 2016. Jenny, who launched her career posing nude for Playboy in 1993, insists the decision is a shame because she always considered the shots to be “classy”, and she is even willing to bare all for the last nude issue. “There was nothing I felt was too embarrassing, or gross, and nothing that I’m not proud of today so it kind of breaks my heart that it’s the end of that era,” McCarthy said. “That we have to lose what I would consider very classy nudity in a magazine ... In solidarity, I will be wearing my panties at half-mast ... and have maybe one more for the road. I would be totally willing just to take it all off one more time, just to say I’ll be in the last one.”

Kids’ joyride footage causes stir Footage of a children’s joyride on a rural road has emerged online. The video, of a small boy not wearing a seatbelt driving other children on a rural road, appalled some Facebook users this week – but others said the video was typical of a healthy and resourceful rural lifestyle. The video, which contains swearing and is captioned “How Maori kids learn to drive” was uploaded to Facebook on Tuesday, and the Merf Ayebro account was credited as the source of the video. The footage has sparked hundreds of comments on unsafe driving and foul language.

Oscar buzz for Netﬂix The film generating Oscar buzz for Netflix, Beasts Of No Nation, will debut on the streaming service on Friday. The film stars Idris Elba, the charismatic British actor whose name has been bandied around as Daniel Craig’s replacement in the James Bond franchise. The film, set in an African country, follows Agu (Abraham Attah), a young, orphaned boy who is taken in by a group of rebel fighters led by a warlord, played by Elba. The movie was written and directed by the director of the first season of HBO series True Detective, Cary Fukunaga, and the rights to the film were bought by Netflix for $US12 million ($NZ17.57 million). The streaming service is said to have planned the film’s release in time for award season contention and it’s paying off; critics are raving about Elba’s performance in particular and suggesting him for the Best Supporting Actor gong. The film’s simultaneous global release is in keeping with all Netflix original content, which comes out at the same time everywhere.

Frozen foetus stolen A foetus has been stolen from a grieving mother’s freezer in Hamilton while she was waiting to bury it, after medical complications prevented it from being carried to full term. Thieves who broke into a Hamilton East garage last week stole food from a 23-year-old woman’s freezer, but also took the foetus of her aborted baby she was preparing to bury under a tree, Fairfax reported. The incident is understood to have occurred on October 11 or 12. And the family is now pleading for the thieves to return the foetus, whose gender is unknown. “Please hear a mother’s and father’s plea – give us back our baby,” she told Fairfax. “We have lost and grieved, and now have to do it all again.” The woman’s father, Dave Evington, told Fairfax his daughter could not carry the baby to full term because of medical complications which would endanger her life and give the baby a higher chance of being stillborn.

Chinese company Shanghai Maling will assume a 50 per cent stake of Silver Fern Farms (SFF). SFF shareholders overwhelmingly supported the move, voting 82 per cent in favour. Shanghai Maling president Weiping Shen was at Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium when SFF chairman Rob Hewett announced the decision yesterday. SFF’s 6200 farmer shareholders were asked to vote on whether or not to accept the $261 million offer Shanghai Maling had on the table. Interestingly, 77 per cent

of shareholders also voted in favour of a second resolution asking the SFF board to look into a merger with the country’s second largest meat processor Alliance Group. Industry reformists Meat Industry Excellence had campaigned for the formation of a new company – Newco – formed by merging the two major players, SFF and Alliance Group, to deal with the ongoing problems of overcapacity and procurement. MIE’s Mid Canterbury spokesman Blair Gallagher said the Shanghai Maling decision came as no surprise. “MIE always tried to supply choices for farmers and unfor-

tunately under the Shanghai Maling deal there hasn’t been another proposal, there’s only been plan A and no other option,” Mr Gallagher said. “That’s the disappointing thing.” “Some of the fundamental issues haven’t been addressed by this – such as overcapacity (in meat works) and the flowon effect of procurement (of stock). The co-op has been weak in terms of its financial viability, although in the past two years it has been very disciplined in reducing debt by around $200 million, he said. “This deal will wipe out any residual debt and put SFF in a

position of strength within the red meat sector. “It will have real strength within the market and it will add value to the ‘pasture to plate’ strategy. “From MIE’s perspective it’s not where we had hoped to end up but we’ve got to respect the decision of the shareholders who have overwhelmingly voted in support of this deal.” The deal still has to be addressed by the Shanghai Maling board and receive approval from the Overseas Investment Office, however it is likely to go ahead, Mr Gallagher said. When the Shanghai Maling offer was first announced it came with a sweetener of 30

cents per share to be paid to existing shareholders. Mr Gallagher said this was a strong incentive to farmers, coupled with the share price trading at 38 cents per share up to the close of trading, up to the $1.60 mark. “In Mid Canterbury there’s quite a lot of farmers who haven’t got livestock of their own anymore, and at the semiretirement or retirement stage who will probably cash in their shares,” he said. “There are some real pluses in the Shanghai Maling deal, in terms of opening up markets, but also through Bright Foods of which Shanghai Maling is a subsidiary.”

Two people have been arrested after the synthetic drug known as 25B N-Bomb was blamed for sending six people to hospital. Police raided a home in Kainga, Christchurch, yesterday, arresting two men aged 19 and 54. Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Stewart said 10 cannabis plants were also seized. The 19-year-old has been charged with selling a psychoactive substance and was due to appear in Christchurch District Court yesterday afternoon. The older man was charged with cultivating cannabis and police said he was bailed to appear in the same court next Friday. The raids were related to the hospitalisations last week, police said. One of the sick people, Michael, was admitted to an intensive care unit and put in an induced coma. Michael’s family said they wouldn’t wish the experience on anyone else. “We turned the corner on Wednesday afternoon when Michael was brought out of the induced coma. He is now stable and being treated in a specialist ward.” - NZME

Joyce’s praise for district well deserved BY SUE NEWMAN

Economic development minister Steven Joyce said it all when he flew the flag for Ashburton as one of New Zealand’s best kept secrets as a place to live and do business. Mr Joyce released this year’s regional activity report at a meeting in Ashburton on Thursday and said the data it contained gave people around New Zealand a number of compelling reasons to move to the Ashburton District. That report, now available as a desktop webtool on the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment website provides a snapshot of every district around New Zealand, including population, economic, employment and housing data. The district earned high praise from Mr Joyce, who said it had one of the strongest household incomes in New Zealand and one of the lowest house prices and relatively low rents. “One of the big challenges is how you tell the North Island that story, how you get them to move to the South Island.” The district’s good news story is spelled out in the regional activity report. It shows that last year the district’s average household income was $91,320, up 6.6 per cent on the previous year. New Zealand’s average household income last year was $88,904. While nationally 23.4 per cent of the population had a household income of more than $100,000, Ashburton’s high income earning households made up a

smaller percentage of the population, 20.4 per cent. When it came to households earning between $75,000 and $100,000, Ashburton at 18.7 per cent of the population was above the national average of 15.3 per cent. Ashburton also came out high on the GDP per capita chart at $53,470. Canterbury scored $53,054 and New Zealand, $51,319. The district’s population increased at a much faster rate than the national average during 2014, up 9.3 per cent on the previous year to reach 35,300. Over the same period New Zealand’s population grew 6.7 per cent. The district has a higher percentage of under 14-year-olds and over 65s in its population – 20.8 per cent under 14 and 16.7 per cent over 65. For Grow Mid Canterbury, organiser of Thursday’s meeting, having Mr Joyce release a national economic report in Ashburton was a significant coup, said chief executive Rob Brawley. “And it was good to hear the comments that the economic gains made in New Zealand were driven by rural New Zealand, by Canterbury and in particular by Mid Canterbury,” he said. “This was music to our ears. We’ve been saying this, everyone else here has been saying this for years and it’s good to have the backing of a high ranking minister of that calibre.” The ability to have access to up-todate economic data about the district would be invaluable to many businesses, Mr Brawley said. “And it’s good that he’s acknowledged the challenges we face in getting people to move south.”

Hazel Redmond is lacing up her running shoes and hitting the streets of Queenstown in an effort to raise money for charity. The 20-year-old Ashburton resident is setting out to run the Queenstown halfmarathon to raise money and awareness for a charity close to her heart – the Make a Wish Foundation. Miss Redmond was diagnosed with a life threatening illness – encephalitis – otherwise known as inflammation of the brain in 2010. It literally changed her way of thinking, and Miss Redmond had to relearn things such as maths and times tables which were second nature before she got sick. Then, in 2012, Miss Redmond was granted a wish money couldn’t buy, thanks to the Make a Wish Foundation. As a 17-year-old Miss Redmond got to meet her idol, New Zealand fashion designer Karen Walker. Now, she wants to ensure other Kiwi kids get their wishes granted. Miss Redmond ran the half-marathon last year, a personal goal of hers, and said while doing it the idea occurred to her that compete for Make a Wish. “I thought it’d be a great way to raise money and people were competing for

Still hampered by fatigue and headaches Miss Redmond said the half-marathon will be both a physical and mental challenge but having her dad Chris and sister Frances running alongside her will be of great support. “There are good days and bad days,” she said. “But I love sport and I have always been quite determined.” Miss Redmond said she feels as though without keeping active she wouldn’t be in such a good place now, and is looking forward to the challenge.

Ashburton emergency services would like to remind people to check their machinery for birds’ nests following a tractor fire yesterday morning. The fire started in a tractor at a private address on Christys Road, Pendarves, at 6.24am. Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade officer Chris Price said the owner of the tractor had

Ashburton fire risk management officer Murray Cairns said it was common for birds to nest in machinery at this time of year because of the warmth of the engine and the easy access. People needed to check their machinery before every use even if they had just stopped for lunch because the birds could work very quickly. A fire in farm machinery

Rescuer in court A helicopter pilot yesterday admitted breaching Civil Aviation Authority rules by flying while suspended in order to rescue an injured hunter in remote bush. Kaikoura pilot Dave Armstrong had been grounded due to a medical condition when Christchurch hunter Scott Lee fell down a bluff and broke his leg in the remote Puhi Puhi Valley, north of Kaikoura, in April last year. Armstrong, 63, answered a plea to help and completed the rescue. Armstrong has indicated he would be applying for a discharge without conviction. Judge Tony Couch remanded Armstrong without conviction until December 14 for a special hearing on the discharge without conviction application at Christchurch District Court. Outside court, Armstrong explained why he pleaded guilty. “At the end of the day I did do it. There’s not much point saying I didn’t do it,” he said. - NZME

A New Zealand reporter covering the Chris Cairns trial in London has been arrested for filming in a prohibited area. Tova O’Brien of 3 News was arrested for using a GoPro camera within the precinct of Southwark Crown Court, a MediaWorks spokeswoman said yesterday. There are two signs at the entrance to the court banning the use of cameras past a certain point. The spokeswoman said O’Brien was given a caution before resuming reporting on the trial. - NZME

Organisers of a family violence, bullying and positive parenting evening held this week were hoping for a turnout of around 30 to 40 people, but instead had an audience of 14. Think First, in conjunction with Families Without Violence held a free parents evening in an effort to reach out to the community. Think First co-ordinator John Hobbs said while the evening was informative, crowd numbers were low. “We had 14 people but we were hoping to get between 30 and 40,” he said. However, Mr Hobbs and Families Without Violence coordinator Ms Arrowsmith were not too disappointed, stating the feedback from those who did attend was “phenomenal”. “Everyone I spoke to said it was so beneficial,” Mr Hobbs said. Four speakers addressed the crowd, each of whom was relatable, informative and engaging, said Mr Hobbs. Family violence co-ordinator Jim Sole spoke about the effects of family violence on the brain,

while Methven youth mentor Juanita Richards and Cactus programme co-ordinator Jenny Reed spoke about how to address bullying as a parent. Neighbourhood Support coordinator Christine Richards then talked about positive parenting, and the influence parents have. The topic of parents as rolemodels was covered, and drove a lot of conversation. “When you look at role models like Justin Bieber, the Kardashians and Miley Cyrus that aren’t positive, the positive role models don’t have that same exposure so parents are the first and foremost role models,” Mr Hobbs said. “At the end of the day kids are sponges,” he said. Mr Hobbs said the turnout could potentially affect the likelihood of holding another event but that was yet to be decided. “There are a number of reasons of why it may not have connected with people but at the end of the day the kids are the ones who have missed out,” he said. “Events like this don’t just happen all the time.”

Despite the theft of equipment and race director John Moore breaking his ankle while setting up the course, tomorrow’s Muddy Good Run will be the biggest yet. With more than 800 participants, including 350 children,

set to take part, this year’s race has exceeded its predecessors. Competitors will go up and down hills, over and under obstacles and through water and mud before finishing where they started, at the Rakaia Domain. Late entries opened yesterday and Mr Moore is anticipating

the final number of participants to be between 820 and 850. The children’s race will start at 10am for 7-9 year olds, followed by the 10-13 year olds, before the adults’ race at 11am, while race briefs and best dressed will be at 9.45am for children and 10.45am for adults.

Ewen Macdonald will walk free from prison next month – but Scott Guy’s parents have no intention of having any contact with him. Macdonald has been behind bars since April 2011 when he was arrested for his brotherin-law Scott Guy’s murder. Yesterday the Parole Board announced he will be granted an early release. Macdonald was acquitted at a high-profile trial a year later but jailed for five years after admitting a string of other offences. After his arrest Macdonald sent Scott Guy’s parents Bryan and Jo a note saying he looked forward to getting back together and laughing about the old times. Yesterday Scott’s dad, Bryan Guy said he didn’t plan to have anything to do with Macdonald. “There’s no need for us to.” The Parole Board has imposed strict conditions on Macdonald for the six months after his release, including that he will be GPS monitored, is banned from the North Island and cannot possess, own or use firearms, ammunition or restricted weapons. - NZME

Armed incident Police from three areas of Otago were called out to a Cromwell address early yesterday morning to what was believed to be an armed incident. Officers from Queenstown, Alexandra and Cromwell attended a property on Leitrum St at 2.20am after an altercation which they believed involved a firearm. Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said there was a group of intoxicated males at the address. Police arrested a 25-yearold male for unlawfully presenting an air rifle and a 21-year-old male for wilful damage. - NZME

Penguin lucky A lucky little blue penguin, found in a groggy state by the side of the road, is slowly recovering after apparently being hit by a car. The penguin, dubbed “Shazbot” by one of her rescuers, was found lying by the road near Port Underwood in Marlborough. She was taken to the EcoWorld wildlife recovery centre in Picton, where she has been responding well to care and nutrition. - NZME

One arrest for drugs The execution of four search warrants in Dunedin and Queenstown has led to the seizure of drugs with a street value of $200,000 and the arrest of one man. The joint police and Customs operation this week resulted in the seizure of 1kg of ethylone, a class C controlled drug, which has a street value of $200,000. The man faces charges of importing ethylone and supplying ecstasy, which is a class B controlled drug. Further charges are likely. The man appeared in Invercargill District Court yesterday. As the matter is before the courts, police will not to comment further. - NZME

Hot pool death Police have named the man whose body was found in a hot pool in Rotorua this week. He was 67-year-old Kerry Hern. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, Rotorua Police said. Detective Sergeant Richard Lang said it was a hard time for Mr Hern’s family. Police were working with the family and victim support services had been offered to them, he said. “Mr Hern’s family have lost someone special to them, so ask that public and the media respect their privacy at this time.” The death has been referred to the coroner. - NZME

Drug arrest A 21-year-old has been arrested for smuggling enough ephedrine to make 7kg of methamphetamine. Customs and police officers swooped on an address in Yaldhurst after discovering 14.6kg of the white crystalline substance inside a consignment from Malaysia. Seven kilos of ‘P’ has a street value of up to $7 million. Customs Investigations Manager Maurice O’Brien said the cost of the social harm of that much meth could reach $3 million. The man is charged with importation and possession for supply of a class B controlled drug and was due to appear in the Christchurch District Court yesterday. - NZME

Gym owner Monique Rouxel is prepared to sell her home to save her gym. The private gym operator locked horns with the Ashburton District Council last month after neighbours complained about noise and the number of cars parked near her house during gym sessions. The gym was operating without the resource consent required to run the business from a residential address and she was given seven days to cease trading. The business had started in a very small way with just a handful of clients, but had grown to a point where several sessions were held each day. She discussed the option of obtaining a resource consent with council staff but said the paperwork was complex and costly. It also required all neighbours to agree, and given that one had laid the initial complaint, securing 100 per cent approval was always going to be difficult, she said. Since then Mrs Rouxel has been searching for a new gym base and while she has moved her early morning classes to the Allenton Rugby Club rooms, she is still looking for a permanent home. And she’s prepared to go to extreme lengths to achieve that, selling her Alford Forest Road home and buying a lifestyle property where client arrivals and departures are less likely to irk neighbours. A key feature of her gym sessions is that as many classes as possible are held outdoors. “I’ve looked at a few places but they have to tick a lot of boxes. “I’m prepared to sell up and relocate over this. “This gym is my life and it’s a lot of other people’s lives too.” In looking at new properties, Mrs Rouxel said she is now very aware of the need to check all consents and conditions that might be needed to operate her next home gym.

Methven Primary School pupils have taken it upon themselves to help solve school-entrance traffic issues, and are submitting their investigation for a national award. Six senior school students presented findings to Methven Community Board members at the board’s eight-weekly meeting this week. They told members that after entering the awards they were allocated an ACL engineer to help them with their project. Students in five groups had undertaken resident, student and parent surveys, and examined usage of the two entrances, at McDonald Street and the second entrance from Methven Chertsey Road. Their suggested improvements included making a pupil drop-off zone at the end of McDonald Street. Currently parents were using a no-stopping area as a drop-off zone. Other suggestions included remov-

The council has requested the board advise whether it wants a 130-metre footpath to run alongside the back of the Railway Reserve, or a 210-metre footpath along the opposite side of the street. The first option would cost $15,330 if it was sealed, while the second would cost $24,646 if it was sealed.

painting which hangs in the Rosebank resthome room of Donald Ivey shows a Mosquito aircraft flying in all its wartime glory with ammunition fire exploding around it. It is an accurate depiction of survival in the skies during World War Two, where a few metres in altitude could mean the difference between life and death. It was the reality lived by Mr Ivey, who served as a fighter pilot during the war, flying 65 missions over enemy territory while posted with the famed Royal New Zealand Air Force No. 487 Squadron in 1944 and 1945. The 93-year-old was last week awarded France’s highest honour, the French Legion of Honour, for his contribution to the liberation of France. Mr Ivey had been working as a shepherd in the Ashley Gorge when he decided to volunteer as a wireless operator air gunner. At a Levin training school he and one other member got called from the hundreds there to see an airforce leader and asked if there was any reason they may not be able to train as pilots. The pair later discussed it before deciding to accept the offer. “We thought we might as well be killed by our own hands as anyone else’s,” Mr Ivey said. The missions themselves numbered too many to remember, he said, although he could recall his first and last mission, as well as one or two close calls. Every mission is recorded in his log book, which he treasures to this day. The first was a mission over a German night fighter aerodrome in Belgium. Mr Ivey could see that the fighters, feared for their fierce night-time raid capacity, were operating, as the aerodrome station had its lights on. “When I got up close they put all the lights off, they knew an enemy was in the vicinity.” As he flew away about seven miles, the lights came on again and Mr Ivey flew back, low and at high speed, and dropped two 500 pound bombs, which had 14-second delay fuses, cratering the runway. “They didn’t even fire at me,” he said, and when asked why, added, “I don’t know, I didn’t get a chance to ask them.” On his last mission, he was among aircraft in the tail-end of a formation of 15 squadron Mosquitoes flying over Bremervorde in Germany, their task being to stop all road and rail traffic. As a “black blanket” of shell fire from the ground shot up in front of them, the plane next to him, piloted by his friend who was an English squadron member, was hit. “He slowly turned, he had about 2000 feet to drop, he went down and hit the deck

and blew up,” Mr Ivey said. Five of the 15 planes were shot down that day, with the fatalities also including the squadron’s wing commandor, Wing Commander Baker from North Otago. The Mosquitoes used by the Royal New Zealand Air Force number 487 squadron were a good combat aircraft and could outpace German fighter planes. The Germans came in with a better plane towards the end of the war, but never got the chance to use them. Another mission he recalled involved flying low to avoid detection by German radar along the country’s coast near Switzerland. He spotted a double row of German military vehicles passing up a main autobahn, they had their lights on and in the moon-lit night were more than conspicuous. “I went down two to three times and sprayed them with canon fire, just to keep them awake.” The moonlight proved a good ally in another mission, this time when sent into the northern part of Germany across Holland. “I always remember that. Old Gerry was trying to get me that night,” he said. “All of a sudden streaks of ammunition went up in front of me.” He increased elevation to 3000 feet, flew “down moon”, and then turned around and could see in the distance the culprit, a silouhetted small black dot on the moon-lit sea. It was a flak boat on the water, which he promptly blasted with canon shells. “He was the fool who made the mistake of firing at me,” Mr Ivey said. One time his plane was hit by enemy fire and he was not able to make it back to the RNZAF base in England, having to instead land in France at an airfield which had just previously been captured by American forces from the Germans. The World War Two song Coming in on a Wing and a Prayer tells of a damaged war plane limping back to base, hinting of the desperate situations faced by fighter pilots. But Mr Ivey said he never felt the need for prayer, as there was never any opportunity to be scared. Most of his missions were single aircraft ones and he flew at night, alongside one other crew member, the navigator.

Swooping season is well and truly under way as magpies set about raising their broods. Bird-phobic Guardian reporter Michelle Nelson looks at why maggies attack.

ew of us have escaped an unprovoked air attack from magpies. That distinctive whir of wings and the clacking of beaks is often the first sign we have inadvertently ventured into their territory. But who are these black and white terrorists? Two sub-species – blackbacked (Gymnorhina tibicen tibicen) and white-backed magpies (Gymnorhina tibicen hypoleuca) – were introduced from Australia in the 1860s to control pastoral insect pests. Over the years crossbreeding occurred and the birds are now considered to be one species. Like many introduced animals the plan backfired, numbers quickly built up and they now compete with several native species. Their aggression is not confined to humans – they have been seen attacking other birds and animals. Magpies are known to chase off native birds and while there is no science to suggest they are responsible for a decline in numbers, there is evidence of open pasture dwellers returning to areas where magpie populations have been culled. Magpies are widespread throughout New Zealand and Canterbury is no exception. Originally the birds lived in Australia’s vast open spaces, but since European settlement they have found urban living to their liking. Open parklands, school grounds and golf courses are particularly attractive to magpies, with well-watered lawns

maggies attack and tall trees to roost and nest in. And it is in these spaces the most significant human-wildlife conflict occurs – but why are magpies so hell-bent on causing grief to innocent passersby? In a nutshell it is testosterone. The hormonally-supercharged male birds are defending their turf during the mating and breeding season, and for some reason about 10 per cent of them have decided humans are a threat. This behaviour is most common from July through to January, although two years ago a group of nasty-natured magpies harassed posties in the Allenton area in a year-round campaign of terror. Dr Darryl Jones of Griffith University in Australia is an expert on magpie behaviour. He says it is extremely rare for magpies to persist in attacking humans after the chicks have flown the nest. “Very occasionally some particularly stressed and provoked birds – always males – swoop all year, but that is extremely rare,” Dr Jones said. Every year thousands of people are swooped, some sustaining minor injuries, but the reality is magpies can cause serious harm. “They can be extremely dangerous, especially to cyclists who may lose control. In Oz eyes are lost every year,” Dr Jones said. And that is not altogether accidental. According to Dr Jones the birds intentionally go for the eyes. It’s a fact Ashburton woman Helene du Mez knows only too well. She was left with painful

“ lacerations on her brow bone, barely a centimetre from her eye, after being attacked by a magpie. “It is the best way to really prevent what they regard as serious threats to their chicks – which is the reason for all this aggression in the first place,” Dr Jones says. They are highly intelligent, on a par with parrots. Dr Jones’ research has shown magpies recognise individuals, even when they attempt to disguise themselves, but he has no idea why they target certain people. “Magpies tend to specialise on either pedestrians, cyclists or

posties, with just few having a go at everything,” Dr Jones says. The Allenton posties were in no doubt about that when they came under fire in 2013. At the time postie Rachel Hyde said the rogue birds would single them out even when they were in the Allenton shopping centre. It is a common misconception that magpies are aggravated by certain colours, a fact again verified by the posties’ testimony. They tried changing their bikes, the clothing they wore and the times they delivered to no avail. Dr Jones has not found any

foolproof ways to prevent magpie attacks, other than avoiding areas where the birds are nesting – and that’s not always easy. “It’s tough because until you get swooped, you don’t know where the attack zones are, but it is usually just about 100m around the nest,” he said. So what can people do to counter magpie attacks? Dr Jones says first and foremost protect your head. “Try to keep them away from the head with an umbrella, a stick, hat or whatever is at hand – but always look at them. They always attack from behind, but the swoop is a signal meaning ‘keep away from my nest’, so that is the best advice.” Running away only reinforces the behaviour, so try and stand your ground. Painting eyes on the back of helmets, ice cream containers or hats are traditional deterrents, but usually ineffective, as is festooning bike helmets with cable ties. Some people have found feeding the birds can modify the behaviour. As magpies claim territory and live there year round it can be particularly problematic if they

set up home in your backyard. In desperation a Rakaia woman, who did not wish to be named, said she put out small amounts of pet mince for her resident swooper. After a short time the bird no longer perceived her to be a threat and the behaviour ceased. She no longer had to run the gauntlet to get to and from her clothesline. As magpies are native to Australia they are protected, but not so in New Zealand. Rogue birds can be shot, but not in urban areas. Environment Canterbury suggests poisoning them with the narcotic Alphachloralose – which will knock them out. The comatose birds can them be humanely disposed of by chopping their heads off with an axe or placing them in a freezer, then buried to prevent secondary poisoning in other animals. They can also be captured in a Larson trap and disposed of, but be wary about removing them from the trap, gloves are a necessity. Thankfully in most instances the problem will right itself after a few weeks and peace will prevail until next spring.

t the start of last year, my then-colleagues in Dunedin joked I’d be a one-eyed Cantabrian within weeks of arriving in Mid Canterbury. If I am, I said, it’ll be because there’s plenty to be one-eyed about. And that’s what happened, sort of. Within a week, I developed a temporary condition called iritis. My right eye swelled and became lightsensitive, my iris doubled in size and I spent days wearing an eye patch. My mates in Otago thought it was hilarious. My head-shaking new colleagues thought it was odd. And I thought having a very red-and-black eye was poetic justice for years of sup-

I’ll be writing in and about another place in Canterbury and I’m back to being one-eyed. Setting my comical eyeball aside, it has been very easy to be a one-eyed editor in Mid Canterbury. It has been very

easy to want to champion all the good the people in this province continue to achieve. These achievements make their way on to our news pages every day. In the economy, in education, in sport, in the arts and in community life, this region does the remarkable better than most others its size. I am big enough and ugly enough to know we only ever scratched the surface in my time here and that it is easy to note the things that were missed. But where we were wrong, we wanted to do better. scale – events and challenges during my time here. The Winz shootings and, most recently, the Thomson Street deaths tested us all. Take it from a representative of those “vultures” in the media that, for real reporters, there is no joy in reporting tragedy. Reporters who care about their patch report as thoroughly as they can because they must, because their community – you – demands it. I know this because the days of some of the most dreadful incidents of the past year were also the times the newspaper website struggled with demand and shops ran out of newspapers. On those days, it was a sol-

emn privilege to be allowed to do my job. Of course, I was only ever allowed to do my job because you allowed my journalists to do theirs. Of all the places in which I’ve been a journalist, this was the place in which people seemed most willing to tell their stories to their community. But opinions – well, they were harder to extract unless I’d done something wrong. I leave knowing acting editor Sue Newman will lead a team of outstanding journalists at a fiercely local newspaper whose independence is the envy of others. I can say that, because I also know what I’ll miss.

ew Zealand is such a safe place to camp. Aside from swollen rivers and regular hypothermiainducing temperatures, nothing’s really trying to kill you. Head 2000km west, however, and every creature seems hellbent on human destruction. That’s what Aussies would have any visiting Kiwis believe, anyway. Although we took such advice with a grain of salt, after a week in the wilderness, we’re almost convinced that everything (bar the drop-bears) is true. Our first encounter with Australian wildlife came in the form of a wombat. Or rather, an ex-wombat, recently transformed into roadkill. We backed up the hatchback to hop out and take a look lest we never see another, but that evening, once we had pitched our tents, we found ourselves in the midst of a swarm of wombats. Perhaps “flock” is a better way to describe the bumbling marsupials, as they rather resembled oblivious nocturnal

sheep. They were oblivious to the impediments our tents ought to have caused to their course, anyway. Meeting the wombats was a good warm-up for encountering other mammals, as they certainly posed the lowest bite risk. Luckily for us, we got out of the way in time to avoid a souvenir scar in the buttocks. Ouch. It seems that the bush animals are in cahoots with

one another, however. As this episode was unfolding, one very cheeky possum was busy unzipping the top of our pack to take a nibble on the personal locator beacon. We caught the rascal redhanded some 10m from the tent, thanks to some beady eyes noticing the flashing light sneaking off into the distance. That could have been one embarrassing situation to explain to search and rescue, particularly seeing as possums are held in high regard around these parts. Having survived the mammals of the area and generally had a lovely time, we still had one last hurdle to leap on our way out again … snakes. What do you do when a tiger snake takes the liberty of sunning itself right in the middle of the only path out of the wilderness? Well, first you stop and eat some morning tea. Scroggin is good at any time of day, but has excellent inspirational properties when it comes to untangling oneself

matters from a snakey situation. The recommended stomping action was having no effect on our slithery friend. Neither was our three-day-old sweat – the wind was blowing in the wrong direction. Then, whilst repacking, our eureka moment came – in the form of a banana. Not wanting to hurt the snake – but not wanting to become a statistic, either – we decided to throw the ripened fruit into the vicinity of the reptile, in order to scare it away. Happily for us, it worked. Future Mario-Cart developers, take note: banana blocks snake. We were soon on our merry way. So, what’s the verdict of these camping Kiwis who took their chances for a week across the ditch? It’s not as scary as Australians make it out to be – only almost. And no matter what happens on our next New Zealand camping trip, we’re bound to appreciate the safe peace and quiet far more for our overseas experience.

In brief McCullum regrets delay Brendon McCullum was accused of tailoring his statements to cricket corruption investigators in order to avoid a potential ban for a failing to report the alleged spot fixing approaches from Chris Cairns for more than two years. The New Zealand captain was giving evidence against his former “idol” and told the jury that Cairns approached him twice in 2008 to become involved in spot fixing. McCullum did not report the alleged approaches until 2011, which he regretted, but he did not mention the names of Lou Vincent or Daryl Tuffey until March 2014. In that third statement, which he repeated in court, McCullum said Cairns told him Vincent and Tuffey were also involved in spot fixing. - NZME

Good start vital for 1st XI Guardian sports reporter James Ford spoke to Ashburton College 1st XI coach Mark Reid about College’s goals for the upcoming season, what has been worked on during preseason and which players to look out for. What strengths and or weaknesses have you identified from the two preseason matches so far? Results were less important than all the players in the squad getting some quality time in the middle. We have a strong bowling line-up and all bowlers got through some overs which is great. From the warm-up games we identified the bowlers needing to take more responsibility in setting their own fields and bowling to a plan. Our batting is a key area that needs to improve from last season and we talked about players being more patient and working their singles and batting deep into the innings. This will allow our hard hitting all-rounders the best chance to capitalise on a solid base and building big totals. How well has the team trained in preparation for the season?

Our preparation has been very good this season, all players attended winter training where they got to focus on the skills they wanted to improve or bring into their game. Most sessions were based on decision making where we are trying to get the players to make better decisions under pressure. The players are often netting together in their own time which shows they all get on very well and that they are keen to do well. With some key players in their final year at College, how influential do you feel they will be this season and why? We have three Year 13 players, Kieran Hunt the captain, Scott Punselie and Michael Burton. Kieran topped the averages for batting and bowling last season and still has goals to be the top run scorer for Ashburton College by Christmas. Scott bowled extremely well last season and has learnt a lot from his time with Paul Wiseman and Nathan McCullum and only needs 21 wickets to be the first player to achieve 100 hundred wickets for College.

Michael was our highest run scorer last year and scored a number of 50s on tough batting wickets, he’s a free flowing right-hander and will often get us off to a great start. It will be very hard to replace Kieran, Scott and Michael after Christmas and they have served College admirably, and also conduct themselves in a very professional manner both on and off the field. Following relegation last season, do you think the structure is in place for the level of cricket to improve at College over the coming seasons? We certainly had a tough season last year and we lost a few games that we should have won, but when we do play to our ability we are a very good side that can compete with a number of Christchurch schools’ 2nd and a few 1st XIs. Our batting did let us down in a few games and the boys do work hard at improving their games. Even though we lose three very good players after Christmas, we have a number of year 12 students going into their third season of 1st XI cricket and a large number of Year 11s

that would have had a year in the firsts. We don’t have the playing numbers of other major playing schools and depend on the Year 9 and 10s to step up and this can be very tough, especially with no 2nd XI to develop players. What do you think the 1st XI’s chances are of promotion this season? I believe we have a very good chance. We have a strong squad with competition for places, which I think is important to help take out that complacency. Our bowling line-up is very strong and we generally field very well, so we can bowl teams out, it was only our batting last season in a few games that let us down and if we can rectify that I believe this team can get back to the top 1st XI grade. Unfortunately cricket is a very fickle sport and there are a number of things out of your control. To get promoted you’ve got to win most games, so the odd bit of luck and things going well will be needed. Today’s fixture: Ashburton College 1st XI v Riccarton High School 1st XI, Ashburton Domain, 10.30pm.

Ready to take on the big boys Joseph Parker’s management are focused on securing the undefeated heavyweight title prospect more fights against bigger and taller opponents as he looks to build upon Thursday night’s win over Kali Meehan. Parker rated his third round technical knockout victory at Auckland’s Trusts Arena as the most impressive win of his undefeated 16 fight (14 knockouts) career to date, as he comfortably accounted for his heavier and taller opponent. Parker’s trainer Kevin Barry confirmed Meehan was just the first in a string of king-sized opponents that his young charge will face as his promotions team, Duco Events, look to ramp up his experience against bigger fighters and continue his preparation for a world title challenge. “That’s what we’re planning at the moment, another very tall guy,” said Barry. “We plan on fighting Joe

As Mid Canterbury continue their quest for an unprecedented three-peat, union CEO Ian Patterson believes the team’s success can be attributed to a combination of factors - strong junior grades, a competitive club competition and a high level of coaching. Patterson credited the inclusion of North Canterbury and Ellesmere teams in the Luisetti Seeds Combined Country Competition for raising the standard of club rugby, which has had a knock-on effect at representative level. “It’s not really any single factor, it’s just a building of expertise, skills, talent and the coaching,” he said.

“I think the combined competition has improved the level of club rugby. “It’s improved both players’ skills and tactical awareness.” Patterson also insisted on the importance of a positive approach to player development throughout age-group rugby in producing a strong core at senior level. “I think the quality of our junior competitions has really come up well. “Clearly we still face challenges in the teenage area, but the signs are reasonably positive there,” he said. The Hammers currently boast an impressive contingent of home-grown players, including skipper Jon Dampney, and Patterson believes that the

opportunity of playing at senior level offers motivation for young, aspiring Mid Cantabrians. Despite the importance of home-grown talent, Patterson is well aware of the integral role players from elsewhere, like stalwart first five Murray Williams, have played in Mid Canterbury’s success. “We’ve struggled to develop a high quality number 10, but the other thing about loan players is we want to get them as regular returns. “They integrate better and contribute better in the whole environment,” he said. Patterson anticipates a physical battle against Wanganui today, but is predicting a Hammers victory.

Auckland will be hard to contain in the ITM Cup Premiership final should they play in this effervescent fashion. They shut the Makos out of this Eden Park semi-final last night, despite a late flourish from the visitors. which included, from him, an unprompted mention of the Rainbow Warrior, Hansen effectively said - don’t worry, everything is going to plan. “I can understand why there’s a bit of concern at home - it’s because they’re at home and not here,” Hansen said. “They don’t know everything that we’ve been doing and they’ll be a little bit apprehensive about a few things I guess because they don’t have any control over it. “When you don’t have control over something your tendency as a human being is to worry.” He added: “We know what’s on the line, as everyone else does ... without being disrespectful to the pool rounds, it’s not the same edge [as a knockout match]. “It’s not the same edge when you play Namibia because you know you’re going to win the game.” There was a discussion about French rugby and the relationship between the nation and New Zealand.

It is one which has seen many ups and downs on and off the pitch (all of which have been extensively covered already), but also including the fatal bombing of Greenpeace ship the Rainbow Warrior in Auckland in 1985 by two French agents. “When we think of it we don’t limit it to the Rugby World Cup,” Hansen said. “There’s been a great relationship between the two countries for a long, long time. Apart from the Rainbow Warrior, we’ve probably been on the same page for most of the time. “From a rugby point of view

we’ve got similar athletes ... their game is built around flair in the backs and real physicality up front.” It is here that perhaps Hansen made his only dig at France, when he referred to their traditional flair being played and coached out of them by their domestic competition and a succession of coaches who have put more store on defence than attack. “I’m not sure it’s the same flair they’ve got now. “The Top 14 has become quite a dour competition ... I know they’re trying to recapture that flair - it’s there, you can see it - and when they let it loose it’s definitely there. “We’ll be expecting them to play with flair and physicality.” Asked which current player had the most flair and Hansen replied: “Your inside centre [Wesley Fofana] ... you wouldn’t want to give him too much room or he’ll skin you as quick as look at you.” - NZME

Will this be Carter’s cup? BY GREGOR PAUL Dan Carter laughs a lot these days. He says he’s in England to enjoy himself, which he has. There’s not the tiniest sign of him carrying doubts or anxiety. His Twitter account reads like a man at ease with the world and even on the field last week in Newcastle, when the injured Richie McCaw brought the kicking tee in his capacity as water boy, Carter asked the captain to tell him a joke. This inner peace Carter has found may be the result of making a conscious decision to enjoy himself, but more likely it’s because he’s realised he can still play the game that made him a household name. That Carter was able to have a bit of fun with McCaw is a good sign the All Blacks’ playmaker is in the right head space. When he was at the peak of his powers, he played in an almost paradoxical mental state of being intensely focused yet supremely relaxed - best typified when the All Blacks played Ireland at Croke Park in 2008. A crowd of 83,000 were deathly silent when he took his first penalty. As he lined it up, a lone Irish voice shouted from the top of the towering stand: “Carter ... you’re shoite.”

The simplest of kicks was pushed wide as Carter had a fit of the giggles. He spent the next 78 minutes systematically pulling the Irish apart in a performance that was world class. It has been a long time since Carter had the confidence to be his old self and, for a while - maybe the last three years everyone wondered whether he ever would be. Even Carter. Between 2012 and 2014 he didn’t manage to play more than three consecutive tests. The injuries kept coming - a broken hand, a broken leg, a badly damaged shoulder and a ripped calf muscle were the worst of it. No one would have backed him to walk the dog in that period and come home in one piece. His form mirrored his involvement. Not even a player with his

natural gifts can reach the peaks without consistent game time and three things happened after the last World Cup. The first was that the legend of Carter became harder to appreciate. Second was that the All Blacks learned to play and win without him. When he was ruled out of the 2011 World Cup, the angst of the nation was palpable. Inside the All Blacks camp it was worse. In the immediate aftermath the mood was

sombre, almost as if the All Blacks’ World Cup dream had died with Carter’s. And the third thing, maybe the most significant of all, was that Carter lost a little piece of himself. Before 2011 he’d played with a sense of entitlement. He knew he owned the game, it was just a case of how he was going to lodge his claim. After, there was a more calculated feel to his work. He started to look like a playbook first-five - following a manual that he probably had no idea was there in his first 10 years as an All Black. Carter’s running game vanished. In his frequent injury-enforced absences, Aaron Cruden and Beauden Barrett developed. The All Blacks wouldn’t be comfortable coming to a World Cup with a significant flaw in their preferred No10, but it looked like earlier this year they may have had to compromise. Cruden was out and Barrett couldn’t convince at the Hurricanes. Carter, as always seemed likely, was given the No10 jersey but he didn’t do much to suggest he was going to tick that last box. He was Dan Carter-Lite. The All Blacks, however,

Beware the foibles of the feisty French

o who should we listen to? There’s two very different schools of thought out there on how tomorrow morning’s big game in Cardiff will go. You’ve got the Shag faction, those who believe implicitly every word the All Blacks coach utters as he navigates so easily those press conferences he used to despise so much (and it showed). Steve Hansen keeps telling us that we’re on track, we’ve been keeping our powder dry just for this most special of occasions, and there’s a whole new box of tricks that will be revealed in the fullness of time (preferably tomorrow), and those tricks will not include all the fumbling, dropped ball and terrible passes that we’ve seen throughout pool play. All that stuff was just a smokescreen apparently, and Richie was only pretending to be really, really angry on the pitch on more than one occasion when his troops were in serious stutter mode.

Tomorrow morning a welloiled black machine will hit the field running, and steamroll a French outfit short of power and short of the flair and elan that has marked Les Bleus in the past. That’s the plan, and rabid All Blacks supporters won’t have it any other possible way. There is another way though, and just the merest glance at history shows what that way might be. A French team written off in all quarters, seemingly lacking the firepower and passion to get any sort of traction on the field of play - a fair description of Msieur Le Frog in 1987, 1999, 2007, and even 2011. In two of those years, the men in blue knocked our fellas completely off their pedestals and sent them home tails well and truly between their legs, and in the most recent lost the final by one miserable point, in a game where they claimed that Richie McCaw spent most of the game offside or scavenging illegally for the ball at the breakdown

Durante a huge loss An already tough A-League away trip has become even more difficult for the Wellington Phoenix. A New Zealand-trained horse hasn’t won the cup since the Sheila Laxon-prepared Ethereal, who was successful in the hands of Scott Seamer in 2001, and Thomson also had a hand

to play in that victory. “I did advise Scott on where he should or shouldn’t be,” he said. “Scott had little or no experience of Caulfield before that.” Thomson was a two-time champion New Zealand apprentice and as a 17-year-old he won the Auckland Cup aboard Perhaps before he embarked on a glittering international career. A day of suspense and action Prepare for a day of suspense and action at the Methven Rodeo on Sunday, October 25, where the country’s best riders, ropers and barrel racers will be on show. In its 46th year more than 5000 people are expected to pack the Methven showgrounds to catch the action. While calls to ban the sport have intensified over recent years by groups concerned about animal rights a strict Code of Welfare for Rodeos ensure their safety. Cowboys can be suspended indefinitely if they breach these rules. In fact the horses that no one could tame run wild and free in Mid Canterbury’s back country for most of the year. They will be corralled and sent down the chute with just one thing on their minds, dumping the rider into the dirt in record time. If he, or she, is lucky, that rider will hang on for eight seconds; most likely they’ll make less than half of that. The eight seconds of work will be repeated at two other rodeos during the season.

In just 32 seconds they’ll pay for a year’s food and lodgings, the occasional vet check and endless leisure. Most of the horses come with a history, most of it bad, and a relationship with humans that just didn’t work out. They’re the lucky ones. Their owners looked for options when their time ran out as hacks, jumpers or race horses. All have been broken in, and they have all proven their bucking ability. An impressive team of purpose bred eight-second bulls from Rangiora will also test the riders. There’s a growing interest in rodeo, particularly among women barrel racers with entries in this section rising, hitting 90 last year. This year’s after rodeo party will feature Jody Direen and special guests Assembly Required and also promises to be a great way to end a fantastic day. Second division and novice events start at 8.30am with the main events kicking off at 1pm.

Guide to rodeo terms • Belt Buckle – each seasons-end champion is awarded a gold belt buckle signifying his/her achievement. • Brahman – a breed of bull known to be especially rank. • Buck rein – a rope attached to the horse’s halter, which a saddle bronc rider holds onto during his ride. • Chute – the place where a rider climbs onto his horse or bull. • Cinch – a strap that runs under the horses’ belly, holding the saddle in place. • Cloverleaf pattern – the shape a barrel racer makes around three barrels in order to make a qualified run. • Dally – wrapping the end of a rope around the horn of a saddle. • Free hand – a rider must not touch himself or the animal with this hand. • Hazer – assists in steer wrestling by riding alongside the steer, keeping it running straight. • Hooey – the half hitch around two of the animal’s legs, used at the end of a rope and tie run. • Lariat – the rope used in rope and tie

and team roping events. • Losing a stirrup – when a saddle bronc rider’s foot comes out of the stirrup during a ride. • No time – when a timed event competitor fails to complete his or her run, for whatever reason. • Pigging string – a short rope that a cowboy uses to tie the legs of the calf in a rope and tie run. • Pulling leather – when a rider grabs onto the saddle when a horse bucks with his free hand. • Purse - the amount the rodeo club or event sponsor puts up as prize money for each event. • Rank – stock that are known to be tough to ride. • Rigging – a suitcase type handhold used by bareback riders. • Riding hand – the hand a roughstock rider uses to hold on with. • Spinner – a bucking bull or horse that bucks or turns in circles. • Touch down – when a roughstock rider is disqualified for touching himself or the animal with his free arm. 500 potential claimants BY JONATHAN UNDERHILL Law firm Parker & Associates says it now has more than 500 potential claimants for its leaky homes lawsuit against James Hardie Industries, transforming the case into a class action against the maker of Hardiflex cladding. The Wellington-based law firm first filed a claim in the High Court in August on behalf of Tracey Cridge and Mark Unwin, alleging James Hardie was negligent in its design, manufacture and supply of the Harditex cladding system, while calling for other claimants to join the suit. James Hardie has vowed to “vigorously defend” the allegations. The ‘Cladding Action’ case would be New Zealand’s first leaky homes class action, the law firm said.

Claimants were now moving quickly to officially opt in, it said. A second plaintiff class of owners of properties clad in James Hardie’s Titanboard product is also being assembled to be added to the claim, it said. Lawyer Dan Parker said that water damage as a result of the alleged issues with Harditex are often not immediately obvious to homeowners. His firm’s media release cited lead plaintiff Scott Woodhead who had gone unconditional on his first home in August before discovering problems. “The house looked in very good condition and two building reports made no mention of issues with the cladding,” he said. “After speaking to my neighbour I got experts to explore the problem and was horrified to find toxic mould is present under the cladded surface.

Delist calls rejected NZX, which runs New Zealand’s main stock market, has rejected a suggestion from the NZ Shareholders Association that it should delist investment firm Pyne Gould Corp to protect the integrity of the market. The class action is the second over potential leaky homes this year after Adina Thorn Lawyers launched one against plaster cladding manufacturers, and follows a Court of Appeal ruling that a Ministry of Education’s claim against Carter Holt Harvey isn’t subject to a 10-year limitation under the Building Act. New Zealand has yet to develop legislation for class actions, with representative suits evolving through court rules rather than legislation and leaving a lack of clarity around some of the procedural rules. The government had expected to complete the policy work for the legislation in 2012, adopting one of the recommendations in a parliamentary select committee report into the spate of finance company collapses through the second half of last year, but has since put the work - NZME on the backburner.

Global Markets The low cost of borrowing associated with wide-spread accommodative monetary policies is expected to remain positive for global growth. Weaker energy prices are further bolstering the spending power of global consumers. Both the United States and European economies remain underpinned by strengthening consumer demand. However economic risks have increased in recent months, with the slowdown in China impacting commodity producers and other emerging economies. Emerging economies contribute over 55 per cent of world growth and this has resulted in some reallocation of global capital away from equity markets, taking prices lower over the quarter. Australian and New Zealand Equity Markets Australian equities were another poor performer. Declines were led by the banking and resource sectors, with banks raising equity during the period and the market factoring in likely changes to regulatory capital requirements. These capital raisings were

expected and after the market has digested these, the banking sector could well get re-rated higher. Resource segments were impacted by weak commodity prices, although in Australian Dollars (AUD) these commodity prices have been more stable. Companies with defensive characteristics or offering structural growth prospects performed the best. New Zealand equities were down over the last quarter but relatively resilient relative to offshore markets. This is a reflection the defensive make-up of the market with attractive dividend yields also helping to underpin market prices. We do note that the reporting season has indicated that revenue growth is currently weakening.

Fixed Interest Market New Zealand interest rates were dominated by cuts to the Official Cash Rate, weaker

global growth sentiment and slower Chinese growth statistics. As we write, the prospects for a further cut to the OCR (Official Cash Rate) before Christmas look reasonably strong. New Zealand rates generally reflect longer-term global bond rate trends and international government bond rates have recently eased back. The final quarter of the year is normally a very busy period for new corporate bond issuance.

On her way home to Los Angeles last week, the UCLA physician made her first unassisted delivery of a newborn baby when a passenger suddenly went into labour over the Pacific Ocean. The China Air flight, which had departed from Taiwan, was diverted to Alaska. Palestinians torch shrine Palestinians have torched a site revered by Jews in the West Bank, Israeli and Palestinian sources say, amid calls for fresh protests after more than two weeks of deadly unrest. Video showed what looked like an extensive blaze at the site in the northern city of Nablus known as Joseph’s Tomb, and the Israeli army called the attack “a despicable act” of desecration. Palestinians have called for a “Friday of revolution” against Israel and Jerusalem police

US Secretary of State John Kerry also warned the Palestinian leader not to incite violence. “President Abbas has been committed to non-violence. He needs to be condemning this, loudly and clearly,” said Kerry, who plans to travel to the region “in the coming days” to try to calm tempers. Abbas has called for peaceful protest, but frustrated Palestinian youths have defied attempts to restore calm. - AFP

Dozens die as blasts hit Nigerian mosque Dozens of worshippers have been killed after two suicide bombers blew themselves up in a mosque in the Nigerian city of Maiduguri. “All the people in the mosque died. Not a single one escaped,” said Muhtari Ahmadu, a trader near the scene. “We counted 42 dead bodies outside the mosque,” added Amadu Marte, a vigilante supporting the security forces in the fight against the Islamist Boko Haram group. The city has been hit repeatedly by the

militants. Borno state police confirmed that the mosque was hit by twin bombings but gave a lower toll of about 14 dead. After the explosions, the mosque collapsed and injured “many people praying”, the police said in a statement. “Casualties have been evacuated to UMTH (University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital) and specialist hospitals in Maiduguri,” it added. The bombers slipped into the mosque disguised as wor-

shippers, witnesses said. One of the attackers set off the first blast when he entered the mosque, they said. The second bomber detonated his explosives soon after, when many had rushed to the scene to help the first victims. “When rescuers and sympathisers gathered in front of the place, the second one went off, killing many of them,” Marte said. The blasts occurred around 6.30pm local time in Molai, in the western suburbs of Maid-

uguri, where worshippers had gathered for evening prayers. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack but suspicion fell on Boko Haram, which was founded in Borno’s state capital Maiduguri in 2002. The city has been hit repeatedly since President Muhammadu Buhari came to power on May 29 with a vow to crush the insurgency. Bid for asylum A group of 10 players from Eritrea’s national soccer team have refused to go home and are seeking asylum in Botswana following a World Cup qualifier. A lawyer representing the players will make an application to a court to try and prevent them being sent back. Their country is one of the most repressive nations in the world, according to human rights groups. Eritrean athletes have previously used sports events to try and escape their homeland. - AP

Ghostly goings on Police in northern China have detained three people suspected of stealing a corpse to sell as a bride in the ancient Chinese rite of ghost weddings, which join single people who died for a belated marriage in the afterlife. The main suspect, a man aged 72, said he had heard about the death of a young woman in a nearby village in Shanxi province and thought of selling the corpse to relatives of single dead men. While they were raiding a village tomb for the body their plot was scuttled by villagers who caught them in the act and alerted police. - AP

Hostage envoy dies Ken Taylor, Canada’s ambassador to Iran who sheltered Americans at his residence during the 1979 hostage crisis, has died. He was 81. Taylor kept the Americans hidden at his residence and at the home of his deputy, John Sheardown, in Tehran for three months. Taylor facilitated their escape by arranging plane tickets and persuading the Ottawa government to issue fake passports. He was heralded as a hero in both the US and Canada. Some of Taylor’s exploits in Iran in 1979 later became the subject of the 2012 Hollywood film, Argo. - AP
