Jenny’s art group ready to shine

Jenny’s Art Group will be wrapping up soon and the public will have the chance to see the fruits of a year’s work.

The group, which operates every Thursday at the Ashburton Art Society’s Short Street Studio, will put its works on display on November 23 and 24.

Jenny Thompson, who runs the group, said she started it not only as a way to teach people art, but bring people together as a group.

“It is about people working on something they enjoy,” she said.

“They are not here to get a degree, they are here for relaxation and enjoyment.”

Thompson has been taking the group for 14 years and one member has been going along for 13 of those years.

“We start people off with a simple work to get them started and get their confidence up, and then they can choose what they want to do,” she said.

The viewing will be open from 10am to 5pm, and the classes run from February to November.

Bovis the boar does MPI proud

A three-man Methven Pig Inspectors (MPI) team came away with a hard-earned ribbon in front of hundreds of spectators in the hotly-contested pig section at Christchurch’s New Zealand Agricultural Show.

The colourfully dressed team of George Mannering and brothers Luc and Ben Rodwell were jubilant after their boar Bovis was runner-up in the under 60 kilogram commercial boar class.

Mannering said decades of breeding had gone into the 16-week-old boar, called Boris in more politically correct circles.

“We have never even placed be-

fore and got fourth one year so today to get second in our class was a good day.’’

Bovis/Boris had come from a Rakaia farm and was selected as “probably the worst one’’ from 200 pigs.

Mannering said the pig section had become extremely competitive compared with previous years when disease fears cut the field down to one entry.

“We have gone from one pig six years ago and now there’s 53 of them,’’ Mannering said. “The teams are from Young Farmers, bankers, stock and station agents, just everywhere.

“We have been doing this for the past four years because of the

Board Breeders Association (BBA) president James Pearse. He’s the reason we are all here and he’s the man and godfather of pig showing.’’

Pearse won the supreme-champion title with Rammstein in a two-pig race in 2014 and pledged to bring more mates the following year. The promise was kept and the pig section has brought new blood to livestock showing at the event formerly called the Canterbury A&P Show.

Rammstein, named after a German heavy metal band, has retired from the show ring, but had his own display pen and admiring followers on the second day of the show in the main lane of the stock

yards. Co-judge Lynda Topp, one half of the Topp Twins and appearing as her good-Kiwi-bloke alterego, Ken, kept the large crowd entertained with one-liners.

Between 200 to 300 spectators thronged the pig ring, many of them smartly attired and bearing stylish moustaches.

While the dress of the day appeared to be tweed jackets and formal drill, MPI cut an alternative figure in their Hawaiian-style shirts and cut-off overalls.

“We just have a bit of a laugh and don’t take life too seriously,’’ Mannering said.

“Everyone is dressed for a funeral and we thought we would do something different.’’

He said young farmers and rural people had leaped into pig showing because it was a good way to get a few days off the farm and socialise.

The BBA hosted an evening function with a guest list of hundreds of breeders and supporters.

Winners of the BBA Cup for the best overall commercial boar were the Greasy Swines.

Despondent on the sidelines were the defending champions of Lowcliffe friends Catherine and Emma Sharpin and Annabel Askin, who watched their pig entry reduced to an early exit. Before the judging Askin admitted the competition had become much tougher.

Year 12 students growing part of workforce

Ashburton College’s Year 12 student numbers might be dropping, but they’re dropping for all the right reasons, says principal Ross Preece.

The school year had been marked by a steady outflow of Year 12 students who had gained level 2 NCEA and who had managed to secure jobs, he said.

Those were students who had no intention of returning for level three and were actively in the job market.

And the good news for those students was that they were finding meaningful employment.

Most who left for employment did so from August on, but a few had achieved level two and found jobs as early as the end of term one, Preece said.

“There seem to be heaps of jobs around. Every day in our notices there are job offers – we had three really good jobs on one day last week – and there’s good competition for those jobs among students and it’s good to see there’s also competition among employers for good employees.”

Preece said he was pleased with the way employers were coming to the college looking for students.

“They’re cottoning on to the idea that the best place to come for employees is to schools.”

Car rally a fun way to fundraise Ross Preece The school was also being proactive in working with students to find work opportunities, he said, because every young person who gained a job in the district was a young person kept in the community.

It was also part of the college’s drive to keep every young person in education, training, or in work, he said.

The growth in Year 12 students keen to move into the workforce was part of a growing trend where young people were becoming less willing to take on debt or huge student loans.

“They recognise you can make a really good living with a trade. If you’re bright and capable you don’t necessarily need to go to uni and get a big student loan.”

People will get the chance to explore the district and help raise funds for a talented young group hoping to travel to the other side of the world.

The Big Little Theatre Company will be running a fun car rally on November 24 to raise funds for

a group of 15 performers who will be travelling to the Globe Theatre in London for training.

The event will test your navigation skills and driving ability in a range of field trials through the back roads of the Ashburton District.

Arrest in largest NZ cocaine bust A Sydney man has been arrested in New Zealand’s largest-ever cocaine bust.

The 41-year-old Alford’s Point resident was taken into custody on Thursday after officers discovered 190kg of the drug inside containers of bananas arriving in Auckland from Panama earlier in the year, New Zealand Police say.

Detective Inspector Paul Newman said the drugs had been found in five duffel bags when the shipment from Balboa arrived in August, after a tip-off from an investigation into an Australian-

based organised crime group by the Australian Federal Police.

The bust is a staggering find for police in New Zealand, where a 46kg cocaine seizure in the North Island town of Tauranga last year was the previous largest find.

The AFP said the drugs had been destined for Australia and allege the man was attempting to collect about 57kg of substituted cocaine.

He was taken into custody in the Sydney CBD and surrendered to police following searches of homes in Alford’s Point and Wiley

On Tuesday, Little confirmed Pike River Mine would be re-entered early next year. But he said safety was a major priority. In 2016, Peters pledged to be the first person to go into the mine.

Library on borrowed time

It’s a library that’s served its members well for more than 80 years, but within a year, Ashburton’s MSA library will be rubble and its books dispersed around the district.

The library has fallen victim to dwindling use, but the final blow to its future will be dealt by the bulldozer when the Burnett Street end of the MSA complex is demolished ahead of a rebuild that will include a new restaurant, billiard room and offices, but no new library.

The loss of the library will be keenly felt by club members, particularly older members, longtime book borrower Margaret Bruce said.

She’s nearly 90 and has been

coming to the library many of those years.

“I used to bring my mother down and now my daughter’s bringing me down here,” she said.

As an ex-teacher Margaret said she’d always been an avid reader and particularly liked the MSA library because it had a good selection of books.

“It’s also very good for parking now I’m getting older,” she said.

Margaret has her favourite authors but she’s always keen to try new books recommended by friends.

“I do like mystery books but now I also like to read something peaceful before I go to sleep,” Margaret said.

She reads at least two books each week and is a regular visitor to the library. Her father John

Turner was a member of the MSA and she recalls he was a regular billiards player.

In the days when women were not allowed through the MSA doors, her mother Edna, with other wives would wait for their husbands in a special room near the library with Ladies Waiting Rm written on the door.

When the library closes, Margaret says she will use the town library but suggests she might take advantage of its home book delivery service.

While Trish Huband has only been on the librarian’s desk for a couple of years, she said that knowing how much it means to some of its older members, it’ll be sad to see the library close.

MSA manager Simon McDonnell said that over the years around $5000 a year was spent keeping book stocks up-to-date.

No decisions have been made on the future of the thousands of books housed in the library but he suggested members may have an opportunity to take one or two each, with the rest going to Rotary’s Bookarama.

There had been no strong reaction from members to the planned closure but he said there would be plenty of older folk who would miss their regular outing to borrow books.

Originally the library opened three days a week with a late night on Friday. It is now only open for three hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The man who died after assaulting a staff member at Whangarei Hospital and being restrained has been named by police. He was Bradley Gibbons, 43, of Whangarei. “Our thoughts are with his family at this time,” a police spokesperson said.

Gibbons assaulted a staff member on Wednesday night and was restrained by clinical staff, security and police. He then became unresponsive and died shortly after midnight. The death has been referred to the coroner.

Report rejected Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has shot down reports that New Zealand has agreed to accept 80 refugees from Nauru. And she says there is no truth to a report that New Zealand is blocking visa applications for hundreds more refugees on Nauru. A story in The Australian yesterday said that Nauru president Baron Waqa had asked New Zealand to grant visitor visas for up to 450 Nauru refugees so they can travel to New Zealand.

He is also reported to have personally brokered a deal for New Zealand to take a special cohort of 80 refugees from Nauru. But Ardern, speaking from Singapore where she is attending the East Asia Summit, said there was no such deal. “It’s incorrect to say that there is some kind of agreement for 80 specific individuals ... to take residence or visit.” She also said there had been no specific requests for visitor visas from refugees in Nauru.

First Ruralco bonus rebate for six years For the first time in six years Ruralco will pay its owners a bonus rebate thanks to increased revenue growth and careful management of expenses.

The $500,000 bonus rebate comes on the back of a strong year for the rural services co-operative, Ruralco (wholly owned

by ATS), which recorded operating earnings before interest and depreciation of $1.4m – the most significant post by the co-operative for several years.

During the last financial year Ruralco continued to increase its market share while also focusing on efficiencies within the business, generating an operating surplus before bonus rebates of $870k – more than double last year’s result.

“These figures represent a very positive year for the co-operative, a year in which we have grown our market share not only within Mid Canterbury but also nationally,” chairman Alister Body said.

The gain has come through careful discipline and investment in technology leading to efficiencies being applied to cooperative cost structures, while also seeing revenue growth nurtured across all business units, he said.

“This has been achieved, not only at a local level through our rural trading outlets, but also nationally as Ruralco’s business, including its card supplier network, has expanded and thrived throughout the country. This network continues to go from strength to strength and is a valued part of our co-op.”

Darfield limousin breeder Warrick James had a birthday to remember after the family’s cow and calf placed third in the competition to find the supreme cattle champion.

Just turned 56, James was quietly savouring the result in the limousin pens when his wife CeCe arrived with a birthday cake.

“Look it’s good to be alive and third place in the Meat & Wool Cup we will take that,’’ said James.

The Ben More Limousin stud was begun in 1973 and cattle breeding is a family affair for the couple and their children Phoebe, Duncan and Bridget.

James’ father Roger continues to also take a strong interest in the breed which hails originally from France.

The James family has gone as far as two runner-up positions

previously in the all-breed Meat & Wool Cup. James said the six-year-old cow with a September 2 born calf was a good cow descended from a limousin line the family had been tracking for a long time.

The calf was from an artificially inseminated sire from Australia.

“The judges said the calf was doing very well, but they are mainly judging the cow. They could see that because the calf was so good that it was a good milker and that helps.

“We have always had French bloodlines but after a visit to Australia we saw they were producing some good bloodlines too. They are also producing some very good polled animals and that’s the direction we are heading in. You can’t stand still you have to supply what the market wants.’’

t’s time to be brave, says Ashburton’s Families Without Violence Network co-ordinator Anna Arrowsmith.

She’s not talking to the victims of family harm. She’s talking to everyone else.

Statistics show one in three women will be the victim of physical, emotional or psychological abuse from their partner and Arrowsmith says it’s time to call out the perpetrators.

She says men in particular need to get off the sidelines and challenge other men about their behaviour.

This month’s White Ribbon campaign is asking Mid Canterbury men, of all ages, to take a pledge committing to build respectful behaviour that undermines violence.

Arrowsmith says family harm is not just about someone losing their temper, it is also about controlling behaviour.

People, especially men, needed

to call out other men when they threatened or disrespected women.

Police in Mid Canterbury attended 635 family harm incidents in the past 12 months but the number is likely to be the tip of an iceberg with many more incidents unreported.

Arrowsmith and senior constable Mark Dryland spend their working hours dealing with family harm issues and say a huge amount of money could be saved by changing the way men behaved to women.

Dryland says fathers can help their sons by talking about respectful relationships and porn, and by treating women as equals.

Nationally, family harm costs the economy $7 billion. Ashburton is no better, or worse, than any other town, they say, where a frontline officer spends 41 per cent of their time responding to family violence.

Ashburton’s White Ribbon activities begin on Monday when a group of motorcyclists known

as the White Ribbon Riders roll into town and visit Allenton and Netherby primary schools.

The riders, about 20 in number, are on a South Island circuit talking to youngsters.

“They talk about being kind to others, about being a good role model and if someone is sad then asking them why,” Dryland said.

White Ribbon national manager Robb McCann said New Zealand had the highest rate of reported violence towards women in the developed world and it was time for men to play a role in violence prevention.

“Too often people think violence is just someone losing their temper, but research clearly demonstrates that violence is more about controlling behaviour and men’s socialisation. We know that promoting and understanding respectful relationships is a protection against violence.

“As men we can make a real difference if we stand up for our values. How many of us ignore the guy telling sexist jokes in the pub

or look the other way when a friend is making derogatory comments?

Too many!

How many dads sit down with their sons and talk about what a respectful sexual relationship looks like?

“The answer is not enough. That is why we are asking men to stand up and get involved. We’re challenging men to take the pledge, to stand up, speak out and act to prevent men’s violence towards women.”

Mid Canterbury men can sign the pledge at a White Ribbon family fun day at the Ashburton Domain on November 24 or at a White Ribbon quiz night on November 30.

St anley’s war

War histories often tell only the stories of the officers in charge of regiments, but it is in the memoirs of the ordinary men and women that the real stories of those wars are often told. Ashburton woman Alison Cox is the keeper of some of those memories, written by her grandfather, World War One soldier Stanley Banyard. She talks to reporter Sue Newman about the man who inspired a movie.

T

hey say in life that timing is everything and if that is true, then Alison Cox’s visit to England could not have been more impeccably timed.

Chance meetings, casual conversations and a visit to her grandfather’s village and church led to a movie and a bond being forged that re-established links between two families, separated for decades by distance.

Alison counts herself fortunate to be part of a family where history and heritage are valued. Among the memorabilia of the past is a special diary, written by her grandfather Stanley Banyard, a diary that tells of his life as a boy, a young farmhand in rural England and later as a soldier, fighting in France during World War One. During his youth Stanley became friendly with a gamekeeper living in his village, Arthur Hunt.

The pair shared a love of astronomy and Arthur, always referred to as Mr Hunt by Stanley, taught him how to use the stars as a navigational tool.

Those lessons were to serve Stanley well during the war. He was a signaller in the Suffolk regiment and during one sortie to tap the enemy communication lines, Stanley and seven other soldiers became stranded in no-man’s land. His commanding officer told his men to follow him back to the allies’ trenches, but when Stanley looked at the stars he knew the officer was wrong.

Fortunately the officer was happy to take on board the advice of one of his men and the group, with Stanley using the stars as his guide, made it safely back to base rather than directly into the enemy’s line of fire.

“My grandfather always said that Mr Hunt saved eight men,” Alison said.

It was a story that became family folklore, one she believed would only be of interest to her family.

Her visit to England changed that.

“I’d always wanted to visit my grandfather’s church in Ramsholt.

It was an old Saxon church in the middle of a paddock,” Alison said.

Getting there was a journey in itself – a bus from Ipswich to Woodbridge then a taxi to Ramsholt.

Taxis, however, were not common currency in rural Suffolk.

“The woman told me I’d have to wait a couple of hours but I said, ‘I’ve waited 60 years to get here so that’s fine’,” she said.

The church was as she imagined

it would be, guarded by a high gate. And that posed a problem; Alison was too short to reach the latch.

“I’d already emailed the vicar,

probably an annoying amount of times, making sure the church would be open and now I couldn’t get through the gate.”

Undeterred she crawled under a

fence and found herself faced with an old tombstone.

“I couldn’t believe it, I looked at it and it was Mr Hunt. It was just surreal. I was absolutely overcome.”

The church was open and Alison found her grandfather’s name on its roll of honour. She filled in the visitors’ book and left details of who she was and why she was there, along with her email address.

She also emailed the vicar to let her know she’d called and thanked her for leaving the church open and told her her grandfather’s story.

“A couple of weeks later, just as I was about to leave London, I got an email from a local historian, Jo Smellie, and she was interested in my story.”

She wanted more details. Alison sent these when she returned to New Zealand and thought nothing more about the request.

“But a couple of months later she emailed and said a local man, Tim Curtis, wanted to make a documentary about the Suffolk regiment in World War One for the 100th anniversary commemoration of Armistice Day, could she pass on my information.” continued next page

From P8 Alison sent additional material to Curtis, the pair continued emailing and last month Alison received a trailer of the Suffolk regiment film.

She was not sure what she expected, but said she was blown away by the production.

“It was just like watching a war movie. And they’d even called it Stanley’s War after my grandfather; that’s what he called his own memoirs.”

The movie premiered in Woodbridge on November 4 and while she did not return to England for the inaugural screening, Alison sent a video message that screened during the premiere.

She’s bought three DVDs to ensure Stanley’s story is kept alive for generations of his family.

As it was with many soldiers, the war did not leave Stanley unmarked.

“During that war one of the soldiers told him about God and he gave his life to God in the trenches. When he came back from the war he joined the church army,” Alison said.

Stanley was born in Ipswich in 1895 and emigrated to New Zea-

land in 1933. He died in 1980.

When he arrived in Auckland, Stanley established the New Zealand Army Church and the city missions that became part of that church.

He later became a prison welfare officer and dedicated his life to improving the lot of prisoners and their families, and at-risk youth. He was awarded an MBE in 1957 for his services as a prison welfare officer.

Alison was in her early 20s when her grandfather died, but says they were very close and shared the same birthday.

Stanley and his mentor Mr Hunt may have died many years ago, but the links between their two families have been reignited as Arthur’s grand-daughter has made contact.

“It’s lovely that the two families are connected again and her son has since emailed too and he’s keen to keep in touch with our family.”

The movie Stanley’s War is based on true stories of Suffolk’s First World War and dramatises the stories of love and sacrifice made by soldiers from the Ramsholt area.

Death penalty sought Saudi Arabia’s public prosecutor has released the findings of a long-awaited investigation of the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, saying that a team of Saudi agents who had been dispatched to Istanbul with orders to bring him home alive had instead killed the journalist and dismembered his body.

Saudi Arabia’s crown prince had no knowledge of the operation, Shaalan alShaalan, a spokesman for the prosecutor, said at a news conference in Riyadh, the Saudi capital.

He said that 11 suspects had been indicted and that authorities were seeking the death penalty for five of them. None of the suspects were named.

Executions in Saudi Arabia are usually carried out publicly by beheading with a sword.

The order to kill Khashoggi, who had criticised the Saudi monarchy over the past year, had come from one of the leaders of the Saudi team in Istanbul, Shaalan said.

Prosecutor Saud al-Mojeb’s conclusion – that the killing was authorised by relatively low-level officials who disobeyed orders and acted on the fly – contradicted assertions by Turkish investigators, who have said it was a meticulously planned affair, with elaborate preparations to cover up the crime that included the scouting of locations where Khashoggi’s body could be disposed of in secret.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the slaying was premeditated and that the orders had come from “the highest levels of the Saudi government,” without specifying exactly who was responsible.

Turkey has called for an international investigation into the killing. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu yesterday said that some of the latest Saudi statements about the killing were not “satisfactory”.

“This is not something that happens instantaneously,” he said. “People and tools were brought to dismember the body.”

Khashoggi, a contributor to The Washington Post, was killed on October 2, soon after entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul to obtain documents he needed to remarry.

The US Treasury said it would sanction 17 individuals linked to the “abhorrent killing”. On the list was Saud al-Qahtani,

Saudi Arabia’s top prosecutor Saud al-Mojeb is recommending the death penalty for five suspects charged with ordering and carrying out the killing of Saudi jounalist Jamal Khashoggi.

“These individuals who targeted and brutally killed a journalist who resided and worked in the United States must face consequences for their actions,” the Treasury said.

Officials in several countries have said it is unlikely that Khashoggi was killed without the knowledge of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader. But there is no definitive evidence that Mohammed ordered the operation. Saudi officials deny that the crown prince was in any way responsible for Khashoggi’s death.

“He did not have any knowledge,” Shaalan said.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir described the killing as a “mistake” and denied any involvement on the part of Mohammed. “His royal highness the crown prince has nothing to do with this issue,” al-Jubeir said.

Mojeb’s statement yesterday implicated two higher-level officials in what the prosecutor said was an operation intended ei-

ther to persuade or force Khashoggi to return to Saudi Arabia. One of them, Ahmed al-Assiri, a former deputy head of intelligence, issued an order for Khashoggi’s return on September 29, the prosecutor said.

That was one day after Khashoggi first visited the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul and was told to return the following week.

Qahtani, sanctioned by the United States yesterday, was also was involved in planning Khashoggi’s repatriation, according to the prosecutor.

Saudi officials have changed their story about Khashoggi’s killing several times since he disappeared, first denying any knowledge of his whereabouts and then saying that he was killed during a fistfight.

In the latest version laid out by the prosecutor, a 15-member team was formed to bring Khashoggi back from Istanbul, “by means of persuasion, and if persuasion fails, to do so by force”. The team included a forensic expert “for the purpose of removing evidence from the scene in case force had to be used to return the victim,” according to a summary of the prosecutor’s statement that was emailed to reporters.

A David Hockney painting has been sold for $US90 million ($NZ128 million), smashing the auction record for a living artist. Hockney’s 1972 work Portrait Of An Artist (Pool with Two Figures) went under the hammer at Christie’s in New York yesterday. It emphatically surpassed the previous record for a work by a living artist, which was held by American Jeff Koons and one of his Balloon Dog sculptures which sold for $US58.4 million ($NZ81 million) in 2013. Portrait Of An Artist was sold to an unknown buyer and the identity of the seller is also unconfirmed.

Inmate confesses to 90 murders A man convicted of three California murders and long suspected in numerous other deaths now claims he was involved in about 90 killings across the US spanning nearly four decades, and investigators already have corroborated about a third of those.

Ector County District Attorney Bobby Bland said 78-year-old Samuel Little was booked into jail this week following his indictment in the 1994 death of a Texas woman.

Investigations are ongoing, but Little has provided details in more than 90 deaths dating to about 1970, Bland said.

Little was brought to Texas in September, and investigators with law enforcement agencies in several states travelled to speak with him about unsolved homicides.

“They’re able to match up over 30 cases so far,” Bland said. “So far we don’t have

any false information coming from him.”

If the number of killings Little claims to have committed proves true, it would make him one of the most prolific killers in US history. Ted Bundy confessed to 30 homicides from about 1974 to 1978. John Wayne Gacy killed at least 33 boys and young men in the 1970s.

During his 2014 trial in Los Angeles, prosecutors said Little was likely responsible for at least 40 killings since 1980.

Bland said Little recently provided details to Texas Ranger James Holland that showed Little was in Odessa, Texas, when Denise Christie Brothers was last seen in 1994. Her body was found about a month later in a vacant lot. Holland eventually elicited a confession from Little and admissions to dozens of other killings from about 1970 to 2005, Bland said.

relating to Brothers’ death.

Little was brought to Texas for questioning in the case from California, where he was convicted in 2014 in the deaths years earlier of the three women in Los Angeles County. DNA evidence collected from old crime scenes was used to match samples of his stored in a criminal database.

Los Angeles cold-case detectives at the time suspected Little was a serial killer, a transient and former boxer who travelled the country preying on drug addicts, troubled women and others. His criminal history includes offences committed in 24 states spread over 56 years.

For years Little had denied to investigators in different states that he was responsible for any killings. Bland speculates that he finally confessed after the appeals to his life sentence in California were ultimately rejected and he no longer had any reason to hide his role.

In brief Hunt for ‘trolleyman’ A homeless man hailed as Melbourne’s “trolleyman” is wanted over a string of burglaries and breaching his bail conditions.

Michael Rogers, 46, used a shopping trolley to ram Hassan Khalif Shire Ali as police tried to disarm the Somali-born radical in last Friday’s Bourke Street terror attack. But a week later, police are on Rogers’ trail over criminal matters. “Police are seeking the whereabouts of a 46-year-old man of no fixed address in relation to a number of recent burglaries in the Melbourne CBD and St Kilda areas and breach of bail conditions,” the force said.

May still defiant as Brexit row escalates Theresa May has vowed to battle on to save her Brexit deal as she faced continued unrest within her Cabinet and party.

The UK Prime Minister insisted she would “see this through” despite the resignation of Cabinet ministers Dominic Raab and Esther McVey and calls led by influential backbencher Jacob Rees-Mogg for her to be ousted.

The difficulties faced by May appear set to continue, with speculation about Michael Gove’s next move after he reportedly rejected the offer of becoming Brexit secretary.

May said he was doing an “excellent job” as Environment Secretary, following reports he would only accept the post vacated by Raab if he was allowed to renegotiate the deal secured by the Prime Minister with Brussels.

A resignation by such a high-profile Brexiteer would deal another major blow to May. International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt also has reservations about the plan and used meetings with May and Cabinet Secretary Mark Sedwill to argue that there should be a free vote in the Commons on the Brexit deal.

That would liberate her from collective responsibility, allowing her to remain in Cabi-

net while voting against the plan, but government sources indicated that “not a lot” changed as a result of the meetings.

At a defiant Downing Street press conference, May compared herself with her stubborn but effective cricketing hero as she told reporters: “What do you know about Geoffrey Boycott? Geoffrey Boycott stuck to it and he got the runs in the end.”

And she will continue efforts to win support for her deal, speaking directly to the public on a radio phone-in this weekend.

But her hopes of getting it through parliament appear forlorn after a bruising Commons statement yesterday exposed the scale of opposition from all parties.

In a particularly brutal intervention, Nigel Dodds, the Westminster leader of the Democratic Unionist Party upon whose 10 MPs the Prime Minister relies for a majority, said she “clearly doesn’t listen” and her deal would lead to a “vassal state with the break-up of the United Kingdom”.

Only a handful of her own MPs spoke up in favour of the plan, denounced by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn as a “half-baked deal” which did not meet the six tests his party had

set for it to get their support.

Labour waverers – who could be tempted to support the May plan to avoid a no-deal Brexit – were urged to stand firm by the grassroots Momentum movement, which launched a campaign to encourage party members to tell their MPs to vote down a deal.

Within the Tory ranks some 17 MPs have publicly stated that they have submitted letters of no confidence to Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the backbench 1922 Committee responsible for Tory leadership elections.

Rees-Mogg, leader of the influential European Research Group (ERG) of Conservatives, said May had previously promised to serve as long as the Tories wanted her to.

“I think there are many people in the Conservative Party, not just in Parliament but in the country at large, who feel that her service now should come to an end,” he said.

Former minister James Duddridge suggested Sir Graham may already have received the 48 letters – from 15 per cent of Tory MPs – required to trigger a vote because the Prime Minister would be given two days’ notice before a public announcement.

Dreamworld staff ‘did not follow procedures’ One of Australia’s toughest ride inspectors has told the inquest into the deaths of four tourists at Dreamworld in 2016 the theme park failed his initial full safety audit in 2013.

In that audit, Dreamworld scored just 41.7 per cent and, by comparison, a compliant business would require a score of 75 per cent, David Randall, managing director of safety specialists DRA, said this week.

When questioned if the low score meant the park should have closed to improve standards, Randall said it was not a practical option and there was a five-year plan to

improve safety. “We are setting a benchmark to start with so we can demonstrate a path to improvement.”

Randall also told the inquest staff did not to follow basic safety procedures.

He said some staff who had worked at the park for decades were “resistant to change”.

Staff were given updated procedures to follow, but some preferred to stick to outdated instructions.

Randall first worked at the park in 2013 and said the safety systems were so bad he would not have let his children on the rides.

“There was a system in place, but it wasn’t great,” he told the inquest. “There was a system but you could poke holes through it.”

Also giving evidence this week, general manager of engineering Craig Deeves admitted the Thunder River Rapids ride suffered malfunctions on October 19, 22, 23 and twice on October 25 – the day of the accident which killed Cindy Low, Kate Goodchild, her brother Luke Dorsett and his partner Roozi Araghi.

They died when a water pump on the ride malfunctioned, resulting in two rafts colliding and flipping.

The man charged with mailing bombs to prominent Democrats and other critics of US President Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty to all 30 charges against him in a federal court in New York.

If convicted, Cesar Sayoc faces a sentence of life in prison. He had previously faced five counts carrying a maximum prison sentence of 48 years. Judge Jed Rakoff yesterday set Sayoc’s trial date for July 15, 2019. Sayoc, a 56-year-old former stripper and pizza delivery driver, was arrested in Florida on October 26 following an intense manhunt.

Killer feels ‘shame’ The man who gunned down John Lennon in 1980 has said he feels “more and more shame” every year for Mark Chapman his crime.

Mark David Chapman told a parole board in August about his remorse during his 10th unsuccessful attempt to win release. A transcript of the hearing was released yesterday by New York prison officials. The now 63-yearold Chapman is serving 20 years to life in the Wende Correctional Facility in New York. He shot and killed the former Beatle outside his Manhattan apartment on December 8, 1980.

QUICK MEAL

Pajeon (spring onion pancakes) Pancake batter 125g flour, sifted 1 large egg 60ml cold water 2-3T kimchi juice 2 spring onions, cut into small rounds 1/2 t salt Canola oil (for pan-frying) Dipping sauce 2T korean soy sauce ½ t rice vinegar ½ t sugar 1 clove garlic, finely minced Pinch of red chilli fakes 150g New Zealand King Salmon, diced 8 cooked New Zealand greenshell™ mussels (4 of the mussels rough chopped) Kimchi Fresh coriander (optional) Pancake batter ■ Mix the flour, egg, water, kimchi juice, spring onion and salt in a bowl; stir to form a batter.

■ Allow the mixture to rest for 20 minutes.

Dipping sauce ■ In a mixing bowl add soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, chilli and garlic.

■ Mix well and allow to steep for 1 hour.

Cooking pancakes ■ Pre-heat an oven to 180°C. ■ Heat up a pan and coat with some oil.

■ Ladle the batter on to the pan and add half the salmon and the chopped greenshell mussels.

■ Pan-fry for a couple of minutes until the bottom surface turns slightly brown, flip it over and then place the remaining salmon and mussels on top of the pancake.

■ Bake in the oven until the pancake is just cooked (no liquid movement) and the seafood is hot.

■ Garnish with kimchi (and coriander) on top or to the side.

■ Plate and serve with the dipping sauce.

Air NZ unveils new aircraft Air New Zealand has unveiled its new short haul aircraft, which it says will provide flexibility for more growth.

The Airbus A321neo will start commercial services next Friday on the “robust” trans-Tasman market.

The airline’s chief revenue officer Cam Wallace said the stretched plane, with 214 seats – 46 more than an earlier version – was ideal for that market and the Pacific, where there are 240 flights a week.

“This is a critical aircraft for our future growth,” he said.

Air New Zealand is in a new tussle on Tasman routes with Virgin Australia, its former partner with which it has just split with after seven years.

Wallace said the new plane would help build a competitive advantage. The new aircraft have new Android-based inflight entertainment (IFE) systems in every seat, complete with fast chargers, more space in overhead bins and middle seats that were wider by 3cm.

“We’re tremendously encouraged with where our bookings are at. We’ve added 10 per cent growth (in capacity) and revenue is matching our growth and – that’s what you really want as an airline.”

He said he was pleasantly surprised with how robust the Tasman market is given

extra capacity Air New Zealand and Virgin had put into it.

The A321neo (new engine option) has latest generation Pratt & Whitney geared turbo fan engines and with some aerodynamic tweaks and greater capacity, seat costs were estimated at 15 per cent lower than A320s used on short haul routes.

Air New Zealand is buying 13 Airbus neo aircraft (seven A321neos and six A320neos) to replace the A320 fleet that currently operates Tasman and Pacific Island services and a further seven Airbus A321neo for anticipated domestic network growth.

Wallace said the airline did have the option of switching A320s to A321s but he said the composition of the order looked right at this stage.

Some work was still being done on flight deck equipment ahead of the first passenger flight between Auckland and Brisbane next Friday.

The new aircraft gave his airline the opportunity to fly to new destinations in the future across the Tasman.

“In terms of Australia we think we’re pretty connected and covered but you look at markets like Tasmania and think whether

Storage slides to two-year low Hydro storage in Lake Taupo has fallen to a two-year low after unusually dry weather in the central North Island in recent weeks.

Water levels in the lake, which supplies Mercury NZ’s nine hydro plants on the Waikato River, were down to 356.5 metres above sea level yesterday, the lowest since June 2016, the company says.

Inflows into the Waikato catchment during the past four weeks were the third-lowest on record for this time of year, consultants EnergyLink said in a weekly hydrology report on Thursday. Storage at Taupo was equivalent to about 270 GWh of generation, the firm said, and about 30 per cent below average since 1999, when Mercury was formed.

Earlier this week NIWA noted

that soil moisture levels through much of the central North Island, Manawatu and Wairarapa were more than 30mm below average.

Around Taupo the deficit was 50mm. The Crown agency is picking average to above-average temperatures for the whole country through to January and normal to below-normal rainfall in all areas other than the south-west of the South Island.

The dry spell is a change of fortune for Mercury, which has enjoyed above-average hydro storage for much of the past two years.

The dams accounted for about two-thirds of the company’s generation in the year ended June; the balance came from its five geothermal plants.

changed at $3.45 and have gained about 2 per cent this year.

Taupo is the biggest hydro lake on the North Island but still small relative to the major dams operated on the South Island by Meridian Energy, Contact Energy and Genesis Energy. Lake Waikaremoana, operated by Genesis inland from Wairoa, has also been declining and is currently at a fivemonth low.

Wholesale power prices jumped in October due to a combination of declining South Island storage and reduced gas supplies. Prices averaged $300/MWh last month, a seven-year high for October, but have since fallen to about half that as demand has eased and a deluge on the South Island restored storage there.

ACC on board with Rocket Lab Rocket Lab says it has raised $US140m ($206m) in a Series E funding round – with ACC’s investment fund and Sir Stephen Tindall’s K1W1 among those who chipped in funds.

ACC is a newcomer to Rocket Lab, and its presence will help address qualms about whether the aerospace outfit is a New Zealand company.

However, Rocket Lab has not revealed the size of each participant’s stake, though it has said the round was “led” by the Australian Government’s Future Fund – meaning it put in the most money.

“I’d really be looking up and down the Aussie east coast (across to Adelaide) for almost any town of over 50,000. If anchored at one end by a larger city, these become viable.”

Forsyth Barr head of research Andy Bowley said the new planes would enhance Air New Zealand’s cost competitiveness on key routes with 25 per cent more seats and only a marginal increase in variable operating costs.

“The financial benefit will be incremental rather than step change as only seven have been ordered relative to a fleet of 30 A320s currently,” he said.

A chance to dream big for the future T

he Ashburton District is sitting on an opportunity that may never come again, the opportunity to create something for today that will retain its relevance 50 years on.

And that opportunity comes with the rebuild of the district’s library.

Perhaps library, however, is the wrong word to use for a building that should meet a diverse range of ever-changing needs.

The library rebuild opens up a world of opportunities, but it comes with just one single risk – our district councillors will be afraid to think big, to step into new territory and learn from the best.

If ever there was an example of how the world of libraries has changed, it’s there to see in the new Christchurch library.

Councillors are not library experts and they need to make sure they take advice from those who do know how those places of inspiration and information will function into the future.

Councillors please, please, please don’t let this opportunity to create an innovative learning space for the future slip by.

Open your minds, consult the best of the best, dream big, don’t cut corners and take cheap options. Instead take this oncein-a-lifetime chance to create a special place that everyone in this district will want to use. Where everyone will feel welcome.

Get it wrong, create a white el-

ephant and you’ll be remembered as the team of elected members who were afraid to dream; get it right and you’ll be remembered as the innovative team, the courageous team, the people who had courage and who had vision.

Step inside the central Christchurch building and there’s not a lot that shouts library.

It’s constructed over four floors and yes there are thousands of books to browse and borrow, but there is much, much more.

There’s a floor dedicated to technology, an audio recording and editing studio, a crafts and textiles room complete with sewing machines, hundreds of workspaces, enclosed and everywhere there’s a sunny spot on stairs or in a window, hundreds of comput-

ers, 3-D printers and laser cutters, meeting spaces, children’s play zones, secluded outdoor spaces and a café.

It’s a building for the future, offering far, far more than a traditional library ever did.

The city council’s courage in building a cutting edge library is being rewarded. The place is buzzing, not just with visitors, but with users.

There’s a lot going on in that massive library and of course ours can never be on that scale, but slice off the large meeting rooms, reduce it by one level and let your imagination fly.

These words ‘borrowed’ from the Christchurch City Council’s website sum up what a library of the future should be and does – foster life-long learning and to be the place for information,

Strike ‘unnecessary’ S

chools are part of the problem and the teachers’ strike this week was unnecessary.

When you hear that teachers are facing difficult conditions, you should not assume that these are all of the government or society’s making. We have conditions in our schools that are our own making.

Let’s take reporting to parents as an example. Have you heard teachers over the past few weeks talking about having to write end of year reports for your child?

Fair enough too. They said they wanted to be a teacher and that means letting parents know how the learning for your child is going.

But don’t be misled that having to write reports and report to parents using portfolios or digital portfolios or having to complete three-way conferences and parent interviews are all onerous conditions that have been heaped upon them by the Ministry of Education. By law, a school only has to report to parents, in writing, twice a year. Anything else is the school’s choosing.

If a school wants to have parent interviews and conferences and portfolios, that is their choice and therefore not a government required work condition.

How about all the planning and assessment you hear teachers talk about, you know it fills their nights and weekends? Have you asked them how much of it is done to fulfil ministry requirements and therefore a work condition, and how much is to meet school requirements?

I have employed teachers who have come from schools with ridiculous amounts of planning required, and I have employed teachers who have come from schools that have less planning than ours.

The interpretation of what planning and assessment is required to meet the National Administration Guidelines, is over to each individual school.

Some schools favour individual planning, others go for collaborative planning.

From these two examples I know that the strike this week was unnecessary because a number of the conditions around workload are not the making of the Ministry, therefore how are they supposed to address this if they never created it in the first place?

I find it interesting to hear the phrase ‘it’s not about the money’ during this industrial action.

Okay then, drop the pay claim if that’s the case and ask for it to go into helping kids with learning needs. I bet the union won’t do that. And speaking of money, did you know that with 27,000 teachers paying roughly $600 a year to the union, our sandal and sock wearing friends rake in $16,200,000 million a year in

membership fees. That is a lot of money, so have the teachers asked what they are getting in return?

Has the union offered to cover their loss of wages while they were on strike? Huh, of course not. It’s funny that the union scream for every last cent from the government but how many teachers can explain what their union spends their millions on?

So I have a solution to this unnecessary sideshow to the important work of teaching and learning. Kill the holidays for teachers and put them on four weeks’ annual leave a year. For a start they are paid a salary so there is no issue with having to pay for the extra eight weeks they will work a year. Honestly, if someone is earning $72,500 a year don’t you think they could use the down time to do all this planning they talk about.

Now I know teachers will say that they do schoolwork during the holidays, but there is no accountability, no checking to see if this is true. By having teachers attend professional development, plan with other teachers, and work in schools to get rid of unnecessary practice that bogs them down, surely that is a better use of that time and would help reduce workload.

Teachers could then go on strike during this non-contact time and therefore not disrupt families who earn less than them and had to pay for childcare.

Another solution with the holidays could be to use them every week. At the moment schools are open for roughly 200 days a year

for instruction. If we worked 50, four day weeks a year we would be open the same amount of time, and then we could be in class Monday and Tuesday, plan and assess on Wednesdays, then back to the class for Thursday and Friday.

I write this, not because I don’t support teachers, but because there is a need for alternative thinking and debate around the issues that face teaching today.

Will the current request by the union really solve the issues?

Have they truly thought about the sustainability of asking for an extra $2.5 billion dollars add to the education budget when it already costs $11 billion a year for all of education?

Striking is a primitive response to not getting your way, it’s an adult tantrum and once completed leads to what? Not all problems facing teachers are created by outside policies and conditions and there are other ways to solve the issues than what is being proposed.

Big test for new wicket

Mid Canterbury’s senior cricketers are set to get their first look at the Ashburton Domain oval’s revamped wicket when they take on North Otago in their final preHawke Cup hit-out tomorrow.

A week after toppling Canterbury Country at Rangiora’s Mainpower Oval in a 60-over pre-season match, Mid Canterbury was set to face North Otago in another 60-over match – weather permitting – just a week out from its opening Hawke Cup game of the season against South Canterbury in Ashburton.

Mid Canterbury coach Garfield Charles was hopeful the rain which was forecast to fall across the district tomorrow wouldn’t

eventuate, because the game was the last chance to iron out any creases before embarking on the 2018/19 Hawke Cup campaign, and a chance to have a look at the new wicket.

“I think the big unknown will be what sort of deck we are going to get for the weekend. It’s the first game on a renovated block, so we are hoping that it plays well and is better than last year, because last year was a bit of a minefield,” Charles said.

Last season the wicket dried out quickly and the top just became dust, Charles said. Colin Morgan and Steve McCloy had been working hard on the pitch over the off season, putting some clay in there which would hopefully mean it wouldn’t get so dusty and cre-

ate a popping unnatural bounce, Charles said.

Just what would play out on that new wicket would be determined by who turned out for each side.

Charles knew what his side was going to look like tomorrow, but had no idea what North Otago would bring.

If North Otago had the services of Francois Mostert, Mid Canterbury would be wary, for good reason.

“He has been a thorn in our side.

He always makes runs and takes a truckload of wickets against us, so if he plays, he’s a threat,” Charles said.

Otago squad member Nathan Smith, a good young faster bowler who was also handy with the bat, was also a possibility for North

Otago. Meanwhile the Mid Canterbury side would feature two changes from the team that beat Canterbury Country, with Bo Houston and Cam Jopson coming in for Will Graham and Archie Redfern, who were playing at The Willows this weekend.

One of the stars of last weekend’s win was Des Kruger, who recovered from a wobbly start to anchor Mid Canterbury’s winning runs chase with a well put together 91, with good support from James Southby (78).

For the bowlers, Deon Biggs and Graham both took five wickets last weekend.

Charles said Mid Canterbury had fielded and bowled well in recent times, but often it was the batting that let the side down.

“It will come down to how well we bat on the wicket,” he said.

The senior rep game would be one of four Mid Canterbury rep teams were involved in on Sunday, with the Mid Canterbury Year 7 team to host Canterbury Country on the Allenton wicket at the Ashburton Domain from 10.30am.

The Mid Canterbury Under-15 and Under-17 teams were also playing Canterbury Country, with the Under-15s in Southbridge and the Under-17s in Darfield.

The senior rep match between Mid Canterbury and North Otago will get under way on the Ashburton Domain oval at 10am tomorrow.

Due to the long weekend, there is no club cricket being played in Mid Canterbury today.

In brief Dressage tournament Horses and their riders from around the South Island are converging on the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds this weekend for the Ashburton Dressage Group’s two-day summer championship tournament. Held on the main oval at the showgrounds, the regional championship show attracted 115 horses from as far away as Invercargill in the south, and Nelson in the north. Riding will kick off at 8.30am both today and tomorrow.

McCullum dropped Former Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum has lost another T20 contract, with his Indian Premier League side Royal Challengers Bangalore. McCullum was one of 10 players released as the team elected not to retain his $770,000 contract, with 14 players were retained for the 2019 season.

McCullum tweeted his thanks to the team and captain Virat Kohli.

Former Chiefs prop Ben Tameifuna appears to be the heaviest man in test rugby, weighing in at 153kg ahead of Tonga’s clash against Wales this weekend. Tameifuna, 27, was a force in the front row for the Chiefs during their Super Rugby winning campaigns in 2012 and 2013 before leaving New Zealand shores after the 2015 season. Now playing in France for Racing 92, the front rower told the Daily Mail that three years of eating French delicacies has seen his weight rise.

Two of New Zealand’s top drifters stopped by Ashburton on Thursday afternoon to show their appreciation to the South Island drift community after the largest competition turned its back on the island.

D1NZ currently have no events scheduled for the South Island next year.

Drew and Jodie Donovan have made a special trip south to the Four and Rotary South Island Champs making several stops for other events along the way.

“The fans in the South Island are so great, we had to come down and do something as the South Island events are always a great time,” Drew Donovan said.

The pair have been drifting competitively for seven years, and said a big draw of the sport is how easy it is to get into it.

“It is quite cheap, all you need is a basic car, and as long as it is rear-wheel-drive, you can make it work,” he said.

“It gives people a way to get off the roads and on to tracks and let off a bit of steam.”

Defending champion Cameron Davis is ruing a costly brain explosion after almost shooting himself out of Australian Open contention for the second day running. After opening his defence of the Stonehaven Cup on Thursday with a watery quadruple bogey, Davis racked up another nasty eight on his second hole yesterday. The pair said the South Island is one of the best places to get

into drifting, with many locations such as Levels Raceway and Ruapuna having open days every month.

“It gives people a chance to get off the road and we don’t want people trying this kind of

stuff on the road as it is dangerous,” she said.

Today is the track day section of the Four and Rotary South Island Champs at Levels Raceway, with the gates open from 9am to 5pm.

The White Ferns have claimed their first win at the T20 Cricket World Cup with a 54-run win over Pakistan in Guyana in the West Indies - but too late. Setting Pakistan 145 to win, New Zealand dismissed Pakistan for 90 in the 19th over of their penultimate game. While the Ferns batters set a challenging score to chase down, the bowlers led the way, with Jess Watkin and Amelia Kerr collecting three wickets each. Watkin was named the player of the game, finishing 3/9 off her four overs, including 17 dot balls, while Kerr was 3/21. But despite the win, the White Ferns can’t make the semifinals, after losing their opening two games to India and Australia.

The White Ferns will continue playing for pride in their final group game against Ireland on Sunday.

NY Marathon an eye-ope W

hen 53,000 people lined up at the starting line at the New York Marathon recently, an Ashburton woman who only took up running two years ago was among them.

For Annie Hunt, the whole experience – from being a delegate for New Zealand in the Parade of Nations two days before the event, to striding it out across the five boroughs of New York City with 2.5 million people lining the course – still gave the 55-year-old goosebumps when she thought about it, and a lump in her throat when she talked about it.

It was an experience of a lifetime that had left memories etched in her mind forever, and when she returned from the trip earlier this week she was still on a high from the whirlwind trip.

It was a trip that, had someone told her a couple of years ago she’d be making, she wouldn’t have believed them.

As a yoga instructor she’d always been fit and healthy, but it was a spur of the moment decision that led her to discover her love for running.

“I was sitting on the couch one day and thought how free it would be to just put some shoes on and go for a run, so I went out and ran 2.3km and came home and was just amazed with myself,” Hunt said.

Six weeks later she signed up for her first half marathon – the Queenstown Half Marathon, which she was away doing again this weekend – and had now notched up nine or 10 half marathons as well as some offroad events including the Kepler Challenge and the Arrowsmith mountain marathon.

She tells the Guardian’s Erin Tasker about the once-in-a-lifetime experience that was running t her first full road marathon and it came about after she got talking to former Ashburton woman Jan Wilson, now living in Geraldine, over a coffee after an event in Geraldine.

After hearing about it, Hunt went straight home and contacted World Marathon Tours and signed up.

That first run she went on two years ago may have been a spur of the moment thing, but running had since become a huge part of her life.

Life was short, so it should be enjoyed, Hunt said.

“I just enjoy it, and there’s some really nice people I have met through it. And I’m old, so it’s nice to be fit and healthy,” Hunt said.

Healthy living had always been a big part of Hunt’s life. She’d lived by a low carb, high fat diet for many years, but she took it up a notch for the New York Marathon, spending nine months on a keto diet in the lead up.

“The nine months was well worth the energy, just for the recovery. The next day people were crippling along and I was bouncing along like Little Miss Sunshine,” Hunt said.

“For me, training with keto was huge and reflected in my time.”

She didn’t really have any expectations of how she would fare in the race, with so many people to contend with in terms of both fellow runners and the sea of spectators and supporters.

She would have been happy with a time of five or five-and-a-

half hours but ended up finishing in 4.44.27 hours.

Just one person in a field of

Ashburton woman Annie Hunt is just back from running her first ever road marathon – the New York Marathon.

53,000, running a course lined with 130 bands and 2.5 million spectators spilling over barriers, Hunt ended up running 43.7km – 1.7km more than the marathon distance of 42km – due to all the weaving in and out.

“It got quite overwhelming at times. You had to move into the middle of the road sometimes to take yourself away from all the people calling out, because it’s quite hard to run and cry at the same time,” Hunt said.

Just getting to the starting line was a mission.

“The cannon went off and it took me just under 11 minutes to even get to the start line, and when I looked back I couldn’t even see the back of my wave,” she said.

Among the craziness, there were some standout moments.

“One of the highlights was the Queensboro Bridge, about 23km in. Prior to that we were 20 people deep with people either side and huge skyscrapers and it was so noisy and stimulating for your senses that it was hard to concentrate on maintaining your pace,” she said.

But on the bridge, that changed.

“It was just our feet; all you could hear was thousands of feet pounding away. And at the top

Around 30km in, runners came to a spot where there were churches on either side of the road.

One was Jewish with people outside singing sombre sounding tunes, while on the other side of the road there was a 100-person gospel band in full voice.

The music over-lapped and it was just an incredible atmosphere, Hunt said.

“The real heroes are the spectators. Those New Yorkers were just amazing. They were handing out food, fruit and sweets … they were out there for hours.

“There were people who took 12 hours, and they were still out there.”

With one of the world’s biggest marathons now ticked off, Hunt wasn’t ruling out heading to another. She’d love to do the Paris Marathon in 2020, but her husband was keen on Tokyo, while she had friends who wanted to do Berlin.

She and her husband were off to do the Inca Trail early next year.

When they return home from that they’ll head to the Naseby Race where Hunt is yet to decide if she’ll tackle the race’s 80km or 100km distance.

“The 80km I know I can do, and the 100km I’m not sure, but it sort of rolls off the tongue a bit better.”

Hunt preferred running in the hills compared to running on the flat.

Last year she completed her first Kepler Challenge but this year she’d missed out on a spot and was currently on the waiting list for the December 1 event, but her husband – Laurie Cain – has got a spot in the big event and is set to complete his first Kepler.

About a month after Hunt started running, her husband decided to join in, and he’d also completed a couple of half marathons and a mountain marathon.

Last year he watched on as his wife completed the Kepler, one of the toughest and most popular challenges on New Zealand’s mountain running scene, and this year the roles will be reversed.

The All Blacks’ calculated ploy to raise stakes against Ireland

Give them a bone and they will chase it until exhaustion. This was, after all, always going to be this year’s pinnacle assignment.

As if Ireland weren’t enough on their own, it is telling the All Blacks raised the stakes internally, and then publicly, by declaring whoever prevails in Dublin will be considered the world’s best, regardless of rankings.

The All Blacks didn’t have to put that message out there. That they did was another calculated ploy.

They wanted to heap further pressure on themselves to perform; to maintain their status.

That’s how this team works; always searching for themes to motivate the collective.

Saying it out loud leaves no room for ambiguity about the stakes.

With Italy to round out the year next week, Ireland are the last major challenge of the season for many leading All Blacks.

With fringe players expected to be given a run in Rome, the frontliners can leave everything at Aviva Stadium.

The vast majority of this squad arrived three days earlier than usual in London with the firm aim of being in best possible shape to knock over England and Ireland in successive weeks.

One down, one to go.

For two reasons, it is fitting Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock take centrestage in this final quest.

Neither featured when the All Blacks lost to Ireland for the first time in Chicago; Patrick Tuipulotu and, in a mistake later admitted by management, blindside Jerome Kaino shifted to cover the absence of the world’s best second-row pair.

Two weeks later, when Whitelock and Retallick returned in Dublin, the All Blacks won 21-9.

Of course they didn’t do it alone but they certainly made a big difference and their combined efforts will again set the tone for the

An old adage maybe, but set piece dominance is imperative against Ireland, a team who has built much of their success on their pack controlling the ball.

They thrive on suffocating, frustrating, strangling teams into submission.

They can’t do that if the opposition turns the tables and regularly disrupts the breakdown, their scrum and, in particular, the lineout which struggled to function last week against the Pumas.

“We never go out looking to target anybody,” All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said when asked if his men would pressure halfback Kieran Marmion, standing in for the hugely influential Conor Murray.

“If you want to target anybody you target the big boys because they’re the guys who lead you around the park. If you can put

those types of players in the red then your team struggles more.

“Set piece will be vital. What we do with the ball will be important and we can do a bit of suffocating ourselves.”

In a local newspaper column penned today, former England captain Mike Tindall strongly suggested Ireland’s structured style was too narrow, too restricted, to work over the course of the World Cup. While that’s not a view Hansen necessarily shares, he did hint at Ireland’s somewhat confined attack.

“You’ve got to admire what they’re doing. Each coach has got to coach the athletes they’ve got to play the way that best suits them.

That was something I found out when I was in Wales. You might have an idea of how you want to play but if you don’t have the athletes that can do that then you’ve got to rejig your thought process.

“It’s winning; they’ll punish you, they find a weakness and he’s pretty good, Joe, at finding a trick or two so we’ll be expecting one or two coming our way Saturday.”

The All Blacks know if they win enough ball, nail their aerial skills and have a crack at the source of Ireland’s game, it should be enough to maintain their mantle of world’s best.

Retallick’s superhuman efforts alone could be the difference.

“We’ve played a handful of them over the last couple of years,” Retallick said. “Their front-rowers are big men who are mobile and like to carry the ball hard along with their loose forwards.

“Like it was in previous battles between the All Blacks and Ireland it will be physical and it’s going to be the one who can dominate that for 80 minutes.

“There’s been no shortage of edge this week heading into Saturday.”

Schmidt hits back at Foster’s not-so subtle dig Joe Schmidt has hit back at a notso-subtle dig by All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster, defending star midfielder Bundee Aki’s right to play for Ireland.

Auckland-born Aki spent a few seasons plying his trade for Counties-Manukau and the Chiefs, before leaving Kiwi shores for the Emerald Isle in 2014.

Last year he made his test debut for Ireland, qualifying to play for the nation with residency.

Earlier in the week, Foster had a bit of fun with Aki’s origin, with the 28-year-old the second Kiwi

ex-pat the All Blacks will play in as many weeks after coming up against Brad Shields’ England side last weekend.

“You have moulded him into an Irishman, he looks like an Irishman now doesn’t he?” Foster said.

“There will be a couple of our guys who have probably played with him and know him personally but we are kind of getting used to that.”

Schmidt, himself born in New Zealand, insisted Aki had long proved where his loyalties lie ahead of his 12th test appearance.

“I think Bundee has probably demonstrated through the last year, he made his debut against South Africa last year. And I think he won personality of the year.

“That’s the nature of Bundee and his popularity. Because everybody knows he’s going to give 100 per cent.

“It’s like asking was Jerome Kaino 100 per cent ready to play for the All Blacks, because he was born in a foreign country. Or Chris Masoe, or Joe Rokocoko, or any of those guys. “So having coached all those guys, they were very ready to

play for the All Blacks. Bundee Aki is very ready to play for us in this weekend’s fixture.”

Ireland have beaten the All Blacks just once in 30 attempts since 1905, which came in Chicago in 2016. Schmidt joked about the win, and the side’s desire to secure the win on home soil.

“It’s always an achievement to beat the All Blacks, that’s why we limit ourselves to once every 115 years because we don’t want to get carried away with things,” Schmidt said.

Big Cup day for trainer Carston Trainer Andrew Carston will have a strong presence at the New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton today where he will line-up 12 runners, including Miss Federer and Sanctify in the Listed Barneswood Farm Welcome Stakes (1000m).

Miss Federer heads into the race as a $2.50 favourite with TAB bookmakers after her last-start winning performance on her home track, while Sanctify is less favoured, opening at $23.

Miss Federer ran third on debut at Riccarton over 800m before going on to break her maiden in her second start and Carston said the two-year-old Swiss Ace filly has taken a lot of improvement from each run.

“I’m really happy with her progress,” he said. “I think she made massive improvement from her first race into her second run and I think she has improved again, so I am very happy with her.

“I thought she got away on them in the end (in her last start) which is encouraging going up to 1000m.

She’s got a reasonably good draw (barrier four), so we’ll use that again. She’ll be somewhere on the speed.”

“I think she was just a nice, neat filly,” he said. “I knew a little bit about her mother from being a good mare down in the South Island and she was cheap enough.

“I quite like to find a horse to suit these early South Island races, they are not normally big fields.”

While Carston has been pleased with Miss Federer’s race day performances he said she has been far from impressive in her trackwork.

“She’s not a very good trackworker, so nothing has changed there. She hasn’t worked very well, but she saves it for race day.”

in her trackwork is stablemate and Welcome Stakes rival Sanctify. The Reliable Man filly is also a graduate from this year’s New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sales where she was purchased by Go Racing for $45,000.

“She’s a lovely filly, I really like her,” Carston said. “Her work has been really good, but it’s disap-

pointing to draw the outside gate (barrier eight).

“She drew out in her first start and got lost. She’s taken improvement from her first run and is definitely progressing in the right way, but she is going to need a bit of luck from the outside gate. She is a nice filly to follow.”

While Carston does favour Sanctify based on trackwork, he has labelled Miss Federer the pick of the two heading into Saturday’s contest.

“On track work Sanctify would probably be the pick,” he said.

“They work together all the time and if trackwork is anything to go on Sanctify definitely worked as good as Miss Federer.

“But race day form and race day experience has got to account for a lot, so I would probably favour Miss Federer from the gate.”

Meanwhile, Carston believes he has plenty of other good chances at the premier meeting.

“I think I have got a really nice team at Riccarton on Saturday,” he said.

“On a firm track I think Hee’s Our Secret has got to be a chance.

Khorabella is a nice mare and Red River Rock is definitely a chance.

“It’s a good day to have a few runners, so fingers-crossed.”
