Hail bashes its way through P2
When the call to help the earthquakehammered people of Kaikoura was made, the Ashburton District opened its hearts and its collective wallet. On Tuesday afternoon the first aircraft – in what has become a revolving airborne mercy mission ferrying aid north – took off from Ashburton Airport. Since then several more flights have been made and will continue to be made, taking food and groceries into an area that is now cut off from the world and airlifting residents out. Between them pilot Terry Hewitt and Canterbury earthquake food aid guru Trevor Hurley hatched the relief plan – Hewitt called on his pilot mates for help and Hurley revived the Trev’s Barbecue service that fed thousands in Christchurch after the February 2011 quake.
Overnight the project developed a life of its own, Hurley said. “We put it on Facebook and it’s gone absolutely beserk,” he said. “Donations are coming into New World and Countdown and money is coming into the Westpac account.” And as the goods come in, the planes are loaded and head north. Yesterday morning’s run was a novel one, with one aircraft loaded to the limit with bacon. A farmer client and Allenton Meats owner Paddy Kennedy put their heads together and decided that bacon might have a more useful future in Kaikoura than it would in the farm freezer. This morning it will brighten breakfast for dozens of homeless Kaikoura residents and tourists. When the call went out for help, Kennedy said he had no hesitation in stepping up to the mark, donating the bacon
and coming up with a scheme that would see hundreds of kilos of meat flown from Ashburton to Kaikoura. “We put it up on Facebook asking if anyone wanted to donate meat and the result was bloody amazing.” He’s had offers of cattle beasts and sheep and responses from dozens of butchers from around Canterbury who’re keen to give their time to bone carcasses and package meat. The big meat pack event will happen on November 27. “We’ve got a carload of butchers from Rangiora, guys phoning saying they’ll give six sheep and seven cattle and we’re now hoping to do up to 20 cattle on the day.”
