A retired Methven couple who escaped a house fire on Monday evening are being well looked after by the community. The modern three-bedroom brick home on a Spaxton Street rear section suffered extensive heat and smoke damage and its lounge room was gutted. Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Selwyn Allred said the owner of the home went down town to do some grocery shopping and when he returned

noticed a couch near the log burner was starting to burn. “He was actually going to take the couch outside but it just got too big too quick,” Allred said. The fire took off and rapidly became high in heat and intensity. The man and his wife evacuated and phoned emergency services. Two appliances and a tanker from the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade were backed up by one appliance from Coalgate and one appliance from Rakaia.

Allred said the back-up was required due to one of the Methven firefighter crews having to don breathing apparatus to enter the home. Another of the Methven crews had been focusing on putting out the fire in the roof, which involved removing roofing iron.
