Around 50 new jobs will be generated when a $15 million goat milk processing factory opens in Ashburton this year and some local dairy farmers are already keen to add goats to their milking platform. The factory is being built by the New Zealand Dairy Collaborative Group in the Ashburton Business Park and has just signed contracts with farmers in Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay to supply goat whole milk powder. A group of 10 Mid Canterbury farmers, dairy and arable, have also shown strong interest in supplying the factory, whose major shareholder is China-based Fine-

boon Inc. Fineboon officials visited the factory site yesterday to inspect progress on the huge 4500 sq m complex. Dairy group managing director Solomon Ling said the company’s next step was to work with Canterbury farmers to generate a local supply. The factory needs at least 1000 tonnes of goat milk powder a year, the equivalent of 10 million litres of milk from roughly 12,000 goats. Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay said there was huge potential for the industry in Mid Canterbury and goats would not have the same environmental impact as dairy cows. “We see dairy farmers not getting rid of their cows, but adding goats.”
With roots stretching back to 1875, Heartland has a proud history of supporting small-to-medium sized businesses, farms and families in Canterbury. It’s great to offer the people of Ashburton a local banking option that is 100% for New Zealand.
Mr Ling said goat milk would be dried elsewhere and brought to Ashburton in powder form, where it would be turned into infant formula and an adult nutritional drink. He said the company was excited by progress and the plant could be expanded on neighbouring land to include a dryer when volumes increased. The company wants the plant to showcase its product to Chinese tourists as they travel New Zealand, highlighting its pure ingredients and sparkling manufacturing facilities.
