WorkSafe probes Ashburton death By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
The new black MOTORING
A man has died following a workplace accident in Ashburton earlier this week. The Guardian understands the man was critically injured following an accident at the site of the old New Zealand Post Office and Kiwibank on East Street. The incident is believed to have involved a safe. A St John spokesman said an ambulance was first called to the site at 11.20am and a man was transported from the site to Ashburton Hospital, be-
fore later being flown by helicopter to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition just after 1pm. A WorkSafe spokesperson said they had been notified of an incident in Ashburton and that the victim had since passed away. “WorkSafe has now opened an investigation into the matter and is unable to provide any further comment, the spokesperson said. The Guardian understands the man who died was Kevin Jory, the owner-operator of Security Installation Ser-
vice, a locksmithing business based in Christchurch. A death notice published yesterday said Jory had passed away following a tragic accident in Ashburton, surrounded by his family in Christchurch Hospital on Tuesday. The building involved, up until last week, was the residence of both Kiwibank and NZ Post. The new Kiwibank site on Cass Street officially opened on Monday morning, while NZ Post is now operating from Paper Plus.
