P contamination suspected BY SUE NEWMAN

Two Ashburton houses owned by Housing New Zealand are believed to be locked and unoccupied while they are checked for contamination from methamphetamine. The properties are among a rapidlygrowing number of HNZ properties around New Zealand that are being forced out of the letting pool while they are checked and, if required, decontaminated. Those two houses are not the first Ashburton properties owned by HNZ to be identified as being potentially contaminated by P. A Dobson Street property, one of four tested last year, was boarded up for many months last year until it was decontaminated. It was later put on the market. Three of those tested returned positive results and required decontamination. Housing New Zealand is upping its
vigilance around identifying homes where methamphetamine has been used or manufactured, says chief operating officer Paul Commons. “We take a zero-tolerance approach to any illegal activity in our homes, including the use or manufacture of methamphetamine.” HNZ is on record as saying there are 400 houses across New Zealand that are contaminated with P, two of those built since June. Those houses are currently uninhabitable and in various stages of decontamination. It is taking a hard-line approach to tenants in those houses, immediately ending their tenancy and billing them for costs associated with remediation of the property. Tenants of properties with confirmed contamination are suspended from renting any HNZ properties for up to 12 months. “We take the issue extremely seriously. The social, health and wellbeing and en-

vironmental impacts of methamphetamine are also extensive and that’s why we have a zero-tolerance approach to drug use and abuse in our homes,” Mr Commons said. HNZ involves police in cases of contamination and, if children are living in the house, Child, Youth and Family are involved as well to ensure their safety. While the offending tenants could find themselves out on the street, the growing number of HNZ homes found to have P contamination was also impacting on others on the waiting list by reducing the housing pool, Mr Commons said. “Contamination from P use prevents vulnerable people on the social housing register from getting access to a home as cleaning and remediation could take up to three months.”
