Opponents of the Ashburton District Council selling Lot 9 to a water-bottling company will present their case to councillors making a decision on the land sale at the end of the month.

Protest group Bung the Bore will speak to councillors at their June 30 meeting during a public forum at the start of the meeting.

Organisers of an online petition with 40,000 signatures against the sale of water say they also plan to present their petition to council that day.

Council this week granted the water-bottling company NZ Pure Blue an extension on the land sale until September 30. The company, led by former Ashburton man Roydon Hartnett,

wants more time to negotiate a deal with KiwiRail to move Ashburton’s rail hub and container-loading facility to the Ashburton Business Estate, near Lot 9. NZ Pure Blue has offered to pay for the relocation.

Bung the Bore spokesperson Jen Branje said she would be speaking to councillors at the public forum on June 30, with the support of other members of the protest group in the public gallery.

The extension did not change the group’s focus, which was to stop the water going offshore.

She was also sceptical of the company’s ownership of the rail hub.

“It will not be owned by council for the community’s benefit, they will control it.”

Online petition organisers Action Station have said on Facebook they plan to present their petition to council on June 30. They are opposed to council selling the 10ha section, which has a water consent, to the water-bottling company.

“We are not aligned with them,” Ms Branje said, “but we appreciate all the help we can get.”

Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay said council had made it clear to the potential purchaser that the rail siding, should it be relocated, would need to be used by everyone. “And they said yes.”

Medals find sparks hunt for owner’s family

Elder abuse a reality in Mid Canterbury

Elder abuse is high on the agenda for Age Concern’s Ashburton branch, which is raising awareness of the issue with a weeklong campaign.

President Trish Small said the elderly were vulnerable in any community and Ashburton was no different.

Elder abuse takes many forms, from physical to psychological, to neglect and controlling finances and can be inflicted by a diverse range of perpetrators.

However it is a crime, and should be reported.

Mrs Small said a breakdown of traditional communities and isolation were often at the heart of the matter.

“People no longer know their neighbours and families often move away – isolation and loneliness are a big problem,” she said.

These people are vulnerable to exploitation from family members, boarders, door knockers

peddling goods and services and in some cases neighbours and so called friends.

This week the Climate Control Companies Association reported recent incidents in which elderly people were bullied into having heat pumps serviced unnecessarily. Earlier this year an elderly Methven resident was duped into handing over a bankcard.

Those who fall victim to such scams may feel too embarrassed to report such incidents, Mrs Small said.

When family members are the perpetrators, elderly victims may also clam up.

“Many people are reluctant to take action against family members because they don’t want to get them into trouble or they fear retribution or are just too ashamed,” Mrs Small said.

Two Ashburton High School medals dating back to the 1930s are now back with their owner’s family thanks to the detective work of an Ashburton woman.

Katie Matthews works at the Ashburton Spark store, and was sorting out some boxes of old phones to be recycled when two metal objects slid out of a box.

They were Ashburton High School medals dating back to the 1930s, and how they’d come to be there, no one knew. Katie was intrigued, so she started doing some research, and decided to try and track down their owners.

She had little detail to go on.

Both medals had the initials R. W. on them, but the other letters engraved on them were abbreviated and didn’t make much sense to her, apart from ‘JNR SWIM CH at the bottom of the 1933 one.

A post on an Ashburton Facebook page resulted in someone emailing her a list of students at the school in those years. From there she found seven people with the initials R. W., so she took to the internet and through the Papers Past website found a newspaper story telling her that the Ashburton High School junior swimming champion in 1933 was a Robt.

Hugh Walls.

So she made another Facebook

post, asking if anyone knew Robt.

Hugh Walls or his family. And someone did. Michael Sheate came back to her with a name and number for the son of a Robert Hugh Walls, who was a good swimmer in his day.

On Wednesday night, Katie met Mark Walls – son of the late Robert – and gave the medals back to him.

“He was quite surprised. He had no idea that they existed and had no idea who would have had them, so he was really excited,” Katie said.

Katie doesn’t know where they came from either. She was just sorting out old cellphones that had been dropped off for recycling, when they slid out from the bottom of a box. But what box they came from, and where the box had come from, she doesn’t know.

Anyone could have dropped it off at the store for recycling, not realising what was hidden within.

Katie was overwhelmed by the response the mysterious medals received.

“Someone even emailed me wanting to buy them, but I don’t think that was a member of the family.

“The son of the guy who won them said ‘I don’t think they are worth anything’, but I said ‘yeah, they are worth something to your family’.”

Helping hand for Pasifika pupils

Five Mid Canterbury schools and one from Timaru have teamed together with the University of Canterbury to increase Pasifika students’ schooling success.

Allenton School, Ashburton Borough School, Ashburton Intermediate School, Ashburton Netherby School, Hampstead School and Waimataitai School started working with Lesieli Tongati’o from the university’s

Pasifika Talanoa centre earlier this year to help the district’s Pasifika students reach their full potential.

Hampstead School acting principal Barbara Shaw said schools in the region were offered the programme by the Ministry of Education and have already had two meetings with the university facilitator.

The six schools with the highest proportion of Pasifika students decided to take up the offer

and are now working together to use Pasifika cultures and traditions to help their students.

“We’ve found it very interesting.

“We’re trying to effect change to increase their learning.”

Hampstead School will benefit from the programme because Pasifika students make up 20 per cent of its roll and many come straight from the Pacific Islands with little knowledge of English or New Zealand cultures and tra-

ditions, Ms Shaw said.

The project will enable all schools involved to work together, learn about Pasifika traditions and develop a plan to help students and their families transition into the New Zealand schooling system.

“It’s good for us to come together and work on the same page.”

Early results from a pilot project to improve water health in the Hinds plains area is showing promise.

The managed aquifer recharge (MAR) site in the Lagmhor district is a unique project aimed at replenishing depleted groundwater systems, Hind Plains Working Group chairman Peter Lowe said.

“There are no irrigation consents attached to this water, this project exists purely for enhancement purposes,” he said.

“The whole point of it is to improve water quality by giving nature a helping hand.”

The MAR project uses Rangitata River water using an unused stock water consent, and piped via the Valetta Irrigation Scheme’s network into a nearby irrigation water storage pond.

From there it is diverted into the first pond on the MAR site, where any silt is allowed to settle before it enters the “leaky” pond where it filters down through the shingle into surrounding aquifers.

“We’re still in the early stages but it’s looking very promising,” Mr Lowe said.

“Its slowly ramping up but it will take a while to get to capacity.”

“Right now we are still looking to understand what will work best by collecting data which the community can use to base future decisions going forward.”

“The facilitator is educating schools on how to best meet their needs and make them feel more confident.”

The group will have three more workshops with Ms Tongati’o over the rest of the year to develop a plan of action.

There will also be a Pasifika community evening to talk to parents about how schools can help children transition.

Lot 9 has a water consent that allows the abstraction of 45 litres of water per second from deep underground aquifers. A discharge consent sits alongside the consent, which means that 60 litres per second must be returned to the aquifer.

Council says this will be done via water from Ashburton’s stockwater system being directed into swales. It says the consent will have no impact on the town’s water supply or water use for farming.

Sharing realities of crashes The realities of a car crash will be driven home to 200 Year 12 Ashburton College students today, during their annual Road Crash Day. Ashburton District Council road safety co-ordinator Jeremy Lambert said the community initiative aimed to raise awareness amongst newly-licensed drivers who were most at risk of being involved in accidents.

Today will start with the students witnessing a mock crash which will involve, and be played out by, four Year 13 drama students from the school.

“The mock crash is a graphic re-enactment designed to en-

courage students to be responsible drivers and more aware of their surroundings when they are on the road,” Mr Lambert said.

Students will then go to the Ashburton Trust Event Centre where they will hear from Lisa Collins, whose son was hit by a car when he got off a school bus and then died from the resulting injuries 25 days later.

After that, three workshops will be held by the New Zealand Fire Service, Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service (Acads) and St John Ambulance.

The workshops will show what emergency services do when

they attend a crash, as well as messages about safe partying and peer pressure.

In the afternoon, students will hear from Brent and Christine Laurenson who will share their story about their son who was killed in a car crash on his 18th birthday.

The event will conclude with Christian Gallen from Attitude (the local youth education division of The Parenting Place), who will talk to the students about the information and skills they will need to negotiate their adolescent years and build meaningful lives.

“The whole aim of the forum is

to promote safe driving and help young people avoid becoming a road crash statistic,” Mr Lambert said.

He said a high proportion of fatal crashes involving young drivers (15–24 years old) occurred on the open road due to the higher speeds, which resulted in higher impact crashes.

“Alcohol and speed are the major contributing factors for young drivers involved in fatal crashes.

“We hope that the event will be enough to make the students stop and think twice and ultimately, to become more responsible drivers and passengers for life,” Mr Lambert said.

Frank lights up to welcome winter solstice Local light fairy Frank Sandys has joined in the spirit of Methven’s Winter Lights Festival with a show of his own.

Well known for his Christmas displays, Frank jumped at the opportunity to set the chilly winter evenings aglow with a special show.

“I just thought I’d get into the spirit of things this year,” he said.

While he has thousands of lights at his disposal he chose not to incorporate Christmasthemed displays in the winter wonderland he has created at his Hobbs Road home.

However, he has acquired some new attractions, such as the snowman who is the star of the show, specifically for the occasion.

The lights will be on at Frank’s house tonight and on Saturday and Sunday evenings. From June 24 the display will be turned on every night until the first week of the school holidays, which begin on July 11.

“All we need now is some snow,” he said.

There is no charge but donations toward Brooke Sandys’ trip to the Performing Arts World Championships in Los Angeles later in the year are welcomed.

Burglaries unsolved Police are continuing their investigations into recent burglaries in the Ashburton CBD. They released stills from CCTV footage of people they wanted to speak to in relation to two of those burglaries – one at Paul Wylie Cyclerama overnight last Thursday and another at Coin Save on Sunday night – in the hope that someone might recognise them. The person in the cyclerama burglary was wearing a distinctive yellow and black backpack, while the person from the Coin Save burglary was wearing distinctive clothing.

Skaters want frosts Ice-skaters are wishing for some more hard frosts so the Staveley rink can open soon. Ice rink managers say the rink was looking good with around 7cm of ice a fortnight ago, but the same northwest winds that stripped Mt Hutt Skifield of its base also melted the ice base at the rink.

The rink is run by volunteers, who are hoping the weather will oblige for an opening date later this month. The rink last year opened on June 28 and enjoyed a cracker season, with 400 people on opening day following a decent snowfall the week before. It was one of the biggest days in the history of the facility, which was built by locals in 1949.

Rock mystery still unsolved

Ashburton’s great rock drop mystery is continuing, but yet to be solved.

A Tinwald resident found one of the gold painted rocks with a message from Jesus painted on it in her letter box on Wednesday night, while another person contacted the Guardian to say they’d got one six to eight weeks ago.

That person was in Tinwald too, adding to the numerous recipients the Guardian’s become aware of in the Hampstead area.

The rocks, of varying shapes and sizes, are all painted in gold and bear the words ‘you are more precious than gold, luv Jesus’ written on them.

The only difference between the ones reported on in yesterday’s paper, and the one the Tinwald man said he received six to eight weeks ago, was the spelling of the word love. His said ‘love’, while others have it spelt as ‘luv’.

Whoever is doing it, the love is being appreciated by most.

One Tinwald man who contacted the Guardian yesterday said

his arrived just after his dog died.

“I thought it was a good memento, so I kept it,” he said.

The man’s son, who also lived in Tinwald, received one too. Theirs arrived about three weeks ago.

A King Street resident reported receiving two this week, and said it put a smile on his face that someone had gone to that trouble.

Tania Hooper posted a photo of her golden rock on the Guardian’s Facebook page yesterday, saying it now took pride of place on a shelf in her lounge.

“Whether you’re a believer or not, I appreciate the time this person took to do it,” she said.

One of the Tinwald residents said the rocks appeared to be delivered overnight, as he’d checked his mailbox the night before, and it was empty. But when he checked in the morning, the rock had appeared.

A number of recipients have suspected the rocks were the work of Ashburton’s New Life Church, but they say it’s not them.

Whether it is a church, or an individual, no one seems to know.

Making way for new buildings Groundwork has started in preparation for the arrival of Methven Primary School’s muchneeded new classrooms. The school is expecting two new buildings, which will be the equivalent of five modern learning classrooms to account for roll growth, in the next few weeks.

The first building, which will house three classes, should be completed next month and the second building, housing two classes, is due to be finished in August.

Bank’s Happy Rebate Day Kiwis banking with the Co-operative bank could expect extra money in their back pockets, as it gives away more than $2 million to its customers.

Calling it “Happy Rebate Day”, NZME’s Flava radio show hosts Pua Magasiva and Sela Alo helped celebrate the day, hitting the streets of Auckland this week to “put-pocket” unsuspecting Kiwis with cash.

The experience was filmed as the pair walked around the streets putting cash into people’s back pockets, bags – even giving away money to drivers waiting in traffic.

The Flava hosts also stuffed cash into a neatly folded blanket under a bench for a homeless person.

The passersby were initially caught off-guard, but later smiled and thanked the pair.

The pranksters had creative ideas to give away money – attaching cash to a fishing rod and moving it around in front of a

man, and putting money in a hood of a woman’s coat.

Magasiva, a Shortland Street star, even tried his luck camouflaging himself in a leaf costume, but eventually ran after passersby to slip the cash into their back pockets.

The Co-Operative bank, owned fully by its customers, will give $2.1 million to more than 130,000 of its customers, after making

Construction growth New Zealand’s economy grew at a faster pace than expected in the first quarter of 2016 as construction expanded at the quickest rate in two years. The kiwi dollar rose after the data was released. Gross domestic product expanded 0.7 per cent in the three months ended March 31, from a 0.9 per cent pace in the final quarter of 2015. That’s ahead of the 0.5 per cent forecast in a Reuters poll of economists, and the Reserve Bank’s 0.6 per cent estimate.

Setting up NZME up as a standalone New Zealand business will give it more opportunity to prioritise its strategy and investments in tune with local markets, says chief executive Michael Boggs.

Shareholders of APN voted overwhelmingly to approve the demerger of NZME from Sydneybased APN yesterday. Boggs described it as a “significant milestone” which would result in NZME become a separately listed business on the New Zealand and Australian stock exchanges. The key catalyst for the sell off has been the looming “Brexit” vote in the UK and the increased uncertainty in the outcome.

The referendum, to be held on June 23, will decide whether Britain will remain in the European Union (EU) or whether they will leave.

Polls have tightened recently, with a few showing that those in the leave camp outnumber those in the remain camp.

Leaving the EU is seen as a negative outcome for Britain economically, and it would be highly disruptive for financial markets.

This outcome would also raise questions about the future of Europe in its current form, something which is also weighing on markets and global sentiment.

Betting odds in the UK still point to Britain remaining in the EU and many believe that this is a better indicator of how the referendum will actually play out.

However, the recent reaction is reflective of the nervousness surrounding the outcome of the vote, and that it could be much closer than first anticipated.

The impact on New Zealand would be relatively limited, yet still material.

The UK is our fifth largest export market (behind Australia, China, the US and Japan), taking 4.4 per cent of our exports.

The rest of the EU represents 7.6 per cent of exports, with Germany the largest.

In terms of foreign direct investment in New Zealand, the UK represents less than 5.0 per cent.

The UK is our fourth largest tourism market (behind Australia, China and the US) in terms of visitors, representing 13 per cent of total visitor expenditure.

In New Zealand, the major events on the local calendar included the March quarter gross domestic product (GDP) data.

Expectations were for 0.6 per cent growth, however, this came in ahead of expectations at 0.7 per cent for the quarter.

Construction continues to be solid while primary industries were weaker, largely driven by weakness in the dairy sector.

Annualised growth came in at 2.8 per cent which was impressive although much of this was driven by population growth.

The other major event on the local calendar was the latest global dairy trade auction.

The headline index showed no change from the previous auction, which was disappointing as expectations were for a rise.

The whole milk powder price was more disappointing, falling a further 4.5 per cent.

This is the second consecutive decline in this key product category.

This comes not long after Fonterra’s initial forecast for next season was announced at $4.25 per kilo.

Although ahead of the current year’s payout of $3.90 per kilo, it was lower than the market had expected and still implied some upside to prices in the coming year. It will be the third season in a row of sub $5.00 payouts for farmers, and will be below break even point for many.

The much anticipated June Federal Reserve meeting was held this week.

After the lacklustre May jobs report, expectations of a rate hike were zero and this came to fruition, with the Fed again choosing to hold rates.

The dovish commentary accompanying the rate decision saw the Fed signal that although it still planned to raise rates twice more in 2016, slower economic growth has seen them adopt a slower pace of tightening monetary policy in the coming years.

Economic forecasts were also revised lower by the US central bank as it now expects the economy to grow only 2 per cent this year and in 2017, a 0.1 per cent reduction from previous forecasts.

Fed Chair Janet Yellen made it clear that there would need to be clear economic strength.

Disney under fire over rogue alligators

BY BRADY DENNIS The snatching of a 2-year-old boy by an alligator from a beach at a Disney resort immediately raised questions about the animal’s behaviour and the company’s responsibility.

Among them: How common are alligators in the lagoon where the attack happened?

Did Disney do enough to mitigate the problem or warn tourists about potential dangers?

If not, could the resort be held legally liable for the toddler’s death?

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, there are an estimated 1.3 million alligators in the state.

The agency regularly warns visitors that Florida is teeming with wildlife and that visitors should tread carefully.

In addition, the Florida Department of Environmental posts warning signs that alligators are present near designated swimming areas and walkways in state parks.

But the fatal attack took place along a well-tended beach by the manmade Seven Seas Lagoon, outside the upscale Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. The boy, on holiday with his family from Nebraska, apparently had waded inches into the water when the alligator attacked.

There were no other people in the water at the time, according to authorities.

Signs posted near the lake warn against swimming in it, but the resort did not have signage warning of alligators in the water.

The company will “thoroughly review the situation for the future,” according to a Disney official.

Officials told reporters that, according to records, this was the first alligator attack at Disney World in its nearly a half century of operations.

Nick Wiley, executive director of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, said the agency works closely with the theme park to remove any “nuisance alligators,” or gators that are at least four feet in length and could pose a threat to people, pets or property.

However, Wiley didn’t know how often his agency actually removes nuisance gators from the park, and he wasn’t able to provide an estimate for how many live in the waters on Disney property.

A local sheriff said that there had been no recent reports of any nuisance alligators in the area, but questions about their presence in the lake will be part of the ongoing investigation.

“There isn’t a waterway in Florida that doesn’t have an alligator in it,” said Kenneth Krysko, herpetology collections manager at the Florida Museum of Natural History, and an expert on the state’s alligators and crocodiles.

The hour of the attack, about 9 pm local time, is an optimal time for feeding.

Witherspoon not coming Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon will no longer be coming to New Zealand after event organisers have been forced to cancel the event. The Oscarwinner had been due to appear as the headline speaker at a charity lunch at Auckland’s SkyCity on July 18, organised

by The Simpatico Connection. However, managing director Jacqueline Nagle yesterday announced the event has been cancelled “due to issues within our organisation”. The statement did not shed any further light on those issues, instead apologising to Witherspoon and her fellow speakers.

When will America learn?

s the identities of the victims of America’s latest mass shooting become clearer, there’s some burning questions that need to be asked.

Why did it happen? How did it happen? But most of all, when is America going to realise that it needs to do something about its gun laws, to prevent these types of tragedies occurring again?

That’s a question that many of us ask every time something like this happens, and in a country like New Zealand, it’s hard to believe that something like that could happen. But it does, frequently.

In New Zealand, you need a licence to have a firearm; you need to meet certain criteria.

But in America, it seems every Tom, Dick and Harry has a gun.

That could be the problem when it comes to solving the problem. Has America let it go so far, that it’s too hard to go back? If they were to change their gun laws now, what would happen to all of the firearms currently in circulation? Do they go door-to-door, asking people to hand over their guns?

Americans seem to believe they need guns to protect themselves, and yes, it’s a completely different situation to New Zealand. Here, someone getting shot is a big deal, but in America it seems to be a daily occurrence. Yes, it’s a much bigger country, but how much of that high rate of people getting shot is due simply to the fact that guns are so much easier to get, and so many people have them?

We’re not just talking your average firearm. I don’t know a lot about guns but I’m picking your average gun couldn’t shoot dead almost 50 people, and injure even more, in such a short space of time like what happened in Orlando this week.

And that’s just counting the shots that actually hit people.

This guy – who was known to the FBI – was in possession of some pretty serious firearms.

Crazy.

America needs to look at what types of guns are available to buy with relative ease in their country, and who is able to buy them. And they need to look at it now, before the next massacre – because the way things are right now, it’s not a case of if another massacre occurs, it’s when.

am not selling my golf clubs!

I have had a mate ask that already. I guess that was his way of saying congratulations on the news that Manda and I are having a baby.

I’m sure I can still manage twilight golf and a couple of tournaments a year when the wee one arrives.

It’s been an interesting journey for us to get to this place.

Obviously I had to do a lot of soul searching about trying to be a father again at 47 years young. I always knew that it would be on the table at some point when I started dating my slightly younger partner.

Manda always said “you can’t do this just for me though, it has to be for both of us or there could be resentment”.

But I think we both know that my main reason for wanting to do it was for her.

She’s a pretty amazing person who will be an awesome mum, so just because she hooked up with a slightly older bloke, that shouldn’t be wiped off the table because I have been there and done that.

Kind of like our trip to America.

I got a buzz out of revisiting places, as I saw Manda’s joy at seeing them. As well as seeing it differently second time around myself.

I can’t express how happy it makes me to see how excited Manda is about our pending arrival. In fact I get a wee bit emotional when I think about it.

Don’t tell the boys at golf I said that though! In a nutshell (for the lads), she’s too good a mare not to put in foal, probably could’ve gone to a better sire though.

Most importantly, my kids have always been keen on the idea. McKenzie said: “I have always wanted a younger sibling.”

We gave them a card each saying Congratulations on being a big brother again and a big sister. It was a pretty cool time with tears of joy from the girls.

I missed a lot of day-to-day stuff with my kids, so I’m looking forward to that this time.

So once I had climbed over the “I’ll be 69 at the 21st” hurdle, we had a bigger one to get over next.

The small matter of the snip more than 10 years ago. My doctor told

me because it was over 10 years, the chances of a successful reversal were very low and we may have to look into ICSI. No, it’s nothing to do with Islamic fundamentalists or Indian Cricket.

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is a specialised form of in vitro fertilisation that is used for the treatment of severe cases of malefactor infertility. As far as male-factor infertility goes, the snip is right up there on the list.

So as much as I’d like to puff my chest out and grunt like Tim the Toolman about still being “studly” (as one friend called me) there was definitely some help from science.

It was a fascinating experience, not romantic, but fascinating.

Like us, the kids have had stacks of really positive comments and

best wishes. I did warn them that there would be plenty of people who thought otherwise and some that may even be nasty.

Josh responded with, “that’s nothing to worry about Dad, they probably have sad lives and nothing better to do”. Good attitude eh?

I am certainly prepared for plenty of ribbing from my mates and the odd “rather you than me”.

I just hope Manda keeps thinking the same.

United out to top table

Mid Canterbury United will take on Halswell in a top of the table battle in Christchurch tomorrow, and a win would send Martin Fitzgerald’s side to the top of the points ladder.

United currently sit on 22 points, two adrift of league leaders Halswell, and both sides will be determined to return to winning ways after dropping points last week.

A depleted United fell to a 2-0 loss to FC Twenty Thunder Panthers in their last outing, while Halswell were held to a 1-1 stalemate by FC Twenty Falcons.

Both teams will also have one eye on FC Twenty Bombers’ result against Selwyn.

The Bombers are in third spot on the ladder – level on points with Mid Canterbury – but hold an inferior goal difference in a tightly packed top three.

Mid Canterbury Masters will also be in action as they play host to Halswell Masters at the Ashburton Domain.

Third placed United will be out to make up ground on division front runners Western Masters and second placed Waimak Villa.

Paul Bradford’s side will be favourites on paper against seventh placed Halswell, but will need to be more clinical in front of goal.

Meanwhile, Mid Canterbury A will face a tough test against Nomads Ladies in their women’s division one fixture on Sunday.

Both sides picked up impressive victories last week, with United dealing Western AFC a 4-0 hiding and Nomads netting five for a 5-2 victory over FC Twenty 11.

Mid Canterbury B will also be away from home against Universities Dragons in their women’s division three tie.

Origin career over?

Warriors captain Ryan Hoffman fears his State of Origin career might be over after being overlooked for next Wednesday’s second interstate clash as a replacement for suspended New South Wales back-rower Wade Graham. Hoffman was snubbed for last month’s series opener with Blues selectors preferring Boyd Cordner, before the Sydney Roosters back-rower suffered a potential season-ending foot injury in the 6-4 loss to Queensland.

Walsh warmed up with a throw of 20.93 metres to start, before the remainder of his counting throws all surpassed 21 metres.

A new points system will be introduced when the Watters Cup kicks off tomorrow as New Zealand Rugby hope to make the game simpler and more fun to watch.

Amendments to the scoring system will see eight points awarded for a penalty try, with no conversion required, six points for a try and two points for a penalty, conversion and drop goal.

Mid Canterbury Rugby CEO Ian Patterson said the union decided to implement the changes in the domestic competition to give representative players a chance to acclimatise to the new system ahead of its introduction at Heartland level.

Patterson believes the changes will encourage teams to play for more tries, and is looking forward to the trial.

“I can anecdotally say that it seems to lead to a more positive approach to the game with the

intention of scoring more tries,” said Patterson.

“We’re just looking forward to implementing the trial and assessing what impact it has on the game.”

NZR General Manager Rugby Neil Sorensen said the chance to test new laws represented a unique opportunity for New Zealand to influence the global game.

“I think it’s always exciting to be part of a process that looks to keep the game of rugby fresh

and relevant,” he said.

The allocation of six points for a try and two for a penalty has already been trialled in Australia, and had a dramatic effect on the nature of play.

“What they found in Australia was that there were hardly any kicks at goal, a lot more kicking for touch, a lot more tries,” said Sorensen.

“But there were other unintended consequences such as more yellow cards as the value of penalties was reduced.”

Baby Blacks crash out of World Championship The New Zealand Under 20s will be playing for the minor placings at the World Championship in England, and they have only themselves to blame.

For the first time since the tournament started in 2008, the

five-time champion New Zealanders missed the semi-finals.

They could thank a 79th minute Jordie Barrett penalty goal for snatching an 18-17 victory over Wales in their final pool game, meaning they finished second

Wales coach Warren Gatland has made two changes to his team for the second test against the All Blacks in Wellington.

In a move which might raise eyebrows in Wales and beyond, Gatland has switched fullback Liam Williams – one of his team’s best in the first-test loss at Eden Park – to the right wing in place of the injured George North.

Rhys Patchell will wear the No15 jersey.

The other change involves Luke Charteris, the lock who captained Wales to their 40-7 defeat against the Chiefs in Hamilton, starting alongside Alun Wyn Jones.

Bradley Davies has been dropped to the reserves bench.

“It is important we go out on Saturday with the confidence to play for 80 minutes in what will be another huge test match,” said Gatland.

“We kept the ball and played well for periods of the first test and we need to convert that to the full 80.

“It will be another huge occasion, in a packed-out stadium in Wellington and we are determined to build on our first test performance.”

Gatland was always going to name a relatively settled side for the second test after his midweek players failed to put their hands up at Waikato Stadium.

In brief Focus on Watters Cup The Watters Cup is almost upon us as Hampstead lock horns with Celtic and Methven face Southern while defending champions Rakaia have the bye tomorrow. It will be the second successive weekend off for Rakaia after defaulting their Combined Country Competition third place playoff clash against Glenmark last week. Celtic, also fresh from a week off after Ashley defaulted, will be favourites against Hampstead, but the form book has a habit of going out of the window in local derbies.

Methven will be out to put their Combined Country Competition campaign behind them when they face Southern at home.

‘Awesome to be back’

By Patrick Mckendry Israel Dagg, overjoyed at his recall to the All Blacks after nearly a year out of the team, has had to tread delicately this week because his roommate is wing Julian Savea, the man he has effectively replaced.

Regular fullback Ben Smith will start in the No11 jersey, with Waisake Naholo retaining his rightwing spot; with Dagg’s form for the Crusaders, and Savea’s failure to kick on in the first test at Eden Park last week leading coach Steve Hansen to act.

The test in Wellington will be Dagg’s 50th – Ben Smith will also be celebrating the milestone – and the 28-year-old is in a unique position to comment on how Savea will be feeling.

“There’s a rule in this team –

you can sulk for a minute and then you’ve got to get over it and move on and do what’s best for the team,” he said.

“I’ve been in the same shoes, rooming with guys who have got opportunities and I’ve not played. You’ve just got to ... help them prepare. Jules has been doing that this week.

“Deep down he will be hurting.

I’ve felt it and it’s not a nice thing, but it makes you stronger.

“I’m sure he’ll come back and bowl people over.”

Dagg – dogged by injury and form issues last year which prevented his selection to the World Cup – said he couldn’t see a way back into the All Blacks last year.

His last test was against the Springboks in Johannesburg in July, but a stint travelling and a long pre-season with the Crusad-

“Last year you kind of think, ‘oh well, time’s up’.

“But then I had to sit down and re-assess things.

“When I got back to playing footy ... I just wanted to have fun.

Hansen said of Dagg: “He’s played well for the Crusaders and I’d expect him to really hum on Saturday night.”

Asked if Dagg had changed during his time away, Hansen said: “There’s not too many guys that leave the All Black environment and then get back in it who don’t change, because you actually realise what you’re missing out on.

“During my time here starting as an assistant coach in 2004 right to this day, everyone that comes back in has a little bit more edge about them and a greater desire even than they did when they first came in.”

Cheika not taking bait Michael Cheika says he doesn’t want to bite back at the barbs coming from England coach Eddie Jones because he can’t run on the field on Saturday to back up the sledging. Cheika addressed why he has kept quiet in the face in a volley of grenades lobbed from former Randwick teammate Jones since the start of England’s tour.

Cheika said while he was a prolific sledger during his playing days, that was because he could back his deeds to justify it on the field.

Cheika said he was not concerned about his team’s physicality, as Jones suggested, but was more concerned about getting stronger in the face of off-the-ball “niggle” from England.

Dixon in a Ford After 50 years, Ford will make its return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Chip Ganassi Racing and Kiwi IndyCar star Scott Dixon behind the wheel.

Ganassi will send four cars to compete in the GTE Pro division in western France this weekend. The teams will each feature three drivers, including IndyCar regulars Sebastien Bourdais and Dixon, who took advantage of an off week to compete in the world’s most prestigious endurance race. Ford finished first, second and third in the 1966 Le Mans, but it didn’t commit to the race again until this weekend.

Ford returned to mark the 50th anniversary of its podium sweep.

Hamilton on a hat-trick

All-the-way win for Celtic netballers

Formula One takes a step into the unknown this weekend with its first grand prix in Azerbaijan but triple world champion Lewis Hamilton hopes the race will take him back to familiar territory. A win in Baku would not only complete a hat-trick of victories for the Briton but would also allow him to overtake Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg at the top of the standings for the first time this year.

Celtic’s Anna Holland keeps an eye on the opposition as she grabs possession. Celtic had too much for Ashburton College yesterday evening to bring the curtain down on round two of the ACL Premier Netball Grade in style. Celtic were quick out of the traps to lead 13-6 at quarter time and extended their advantage to 20-11 at halftime. The third quarter was College’s best, out scoring Celtic 10-8, but seven goals each in the final stanza saw Celtic through to a 35-28 victory. Carrick on ‘home’ court

Kelsi Carrick is this weekend trying to achieve a rare sporting feat.

After beginning her squash career as a junior at the Rakaia Squash Club, Carrick, now playing in Christchurch, is a notable entry at that club’s annual open tournament, and after last year cleaning up both the women’s and men’s B grade titles she has set her sights higher, entering only the men’s A grade this year.

While it would be a major surprise for her to make it to the final, Carrick is still expected to give her opponents some serious food for thought along the way.

The tournament’s top seed is Ashburton’s Lee Barker, fresh from taking out the Methven title last week, and if seedings go to plan he would meet clubmate Tim Stoddart in the final (although Stoddard will have to get past Carrick in the first round).

Ashburton’s Ash Flannery and Alex Smith from the home club round out the top grade’s seeds, while notable for their absence through injury will be Rakaia’s Jeremy Simpson and Jeremy Duckmanton.

In Carrick’s absence, the ladies’ top seed is Bianca Kingras from the Geraldine club, but she can expect stern opposition from second seed Julie Smith, also a title-winner from Methven, while Aleisha Stoddard and Kim Dwyer are the third

and fourth ladies’ seeds.

The tournament has attracted 56 entries, divided into seven grades, and some of the first-round games were played last night to alleviate court congestion.

The first of Saturday’s matches begin at 7.30am, with solid court action all day until the finals, which are scheduled to begin at 6.00pm.

The men’s A finalists are due to step out on the court at 7.20pm.

Hunt to fight ‘forever’ Dana White has given Kiwi heavyweight Mark Hunt permission to stay in the UFC for as long as he wants, revealing: “Until the day that guy doesn’t want to throw a punch anymore, he’s with me”. White revealed he had initially planned to retire the 42-year-old slugger after his most recent contract expired in early 2016.

Instead, Hunt has re-signed for a further six bouts. UFC president White said: “Listen, until the day that guy doesn’t want to throw a punch anymore, he’s with me. I love Mark Hunt.”
