Work accidents holding steady BY DAISY HUDSON

Mind-blowing TT action P18-19
Serious workplace accidents appear to be holding steady in Ashburton despite a recent spike in incidents. Workplace accidents in the Ashburton District hit the headlines after an employee at Anzco Foods was crushed by a door on June 3. Hisham Almansi, 20, reportedly received multiple broken bones and serious injuries, and remains in a coma following the incident.
Canterbury site manager Chris Baird said Anzco took every accident seriously and investigations were ongoing. An employee at Silver Fern Farms in Fairton was also hospitalised last week after receiving burns to his hands and face. However, figures released to the Guardian by Worksafe New Zealand show the number of serious workplace accidents has not increased. Worksafe has received 20 serious harm notifications so far this year,
while a total of 42 incidents were recorded in 2014. That was a decrease of over 30 per cent from 2013 when 61 notifications were received. However, prior to July, 2013, any notification was recorded as it was received, whereas after that period only notifications that met the legal definition of serious harm were recorded.
