Mt Hutt Ski Area management are hailing their locals day on Saturday a success after good crowds of people from the Ashburton District made their way up the mountain to enjoy a day on the slopes.

For the first time, the skifield, which opened 10 days ago for the new season, offered discounted tickets to locals to try and get a new wave of people coming up to enjoy what Mt Hutt has to offer.

With a day lift pass for $20, as opposed to the normal $119 for adults and $59 for children, it was a more than worthwhile opportunity for people who aren’t regulars at skiing to do so with proceeds

heading directly back into the community.

As well as the reduced ticket prices, rental hire for the day was slashed in half too at a price of just $20, with all proceeds from the day’s promotion going to the KidzMethven Skate Park project.

“The turnout was diverse,” a Mt Hutt spokesperson said.

“We had young and old cracking out the skis and boards, many for the first time this winter.”

Those who made the trek up to the mountain were met with a damp day, but also enjoyed soft and spring-like snow, making it perfect conditions for learning

and getting back into the groove after an absence.

Long-time locals took the opportunity to introduce younger family members to Mt Hutt. Clarke Mitchell, an Ashburton local, had come to Mt Hutt with his whole family and was teaching his grandson, Harrison, how to ski.

“I’ve been coming up here for 20 years,” Clarke said.

“My son was a ski patroller here.”

Mt Hutt were unable to confirm whether or not further local days would be offered during this season, but after the success of Saturday, it’s hard to see why they wouldn’t.

Defrosting windscreens a must

If you are planning on not fully defrosting your windscreen this winter, you can expect to be receiving a $150 fine from police.

Mid South Canterbury Highway Patrol Sergeant Steve Burgerhout said police would not be accepting anything other than clear windscreens from motorists this winter.

“A little port-hole that you have scraped in the windscreen is not good enough,” he said.

“If the forecast is for it to be cold overnight, it is not hard to cover your windscreen before you go to bed or to allow a few extra minutes in the morning to clear it.”

Burgerhout said while it may be easy to see cars in front of you with a make-shift port-hole cleared in the windscreen, it was less safe for other road users.

“It makes it a lot harder to see the likes of cyclists if you

have only cleared in front and not over to the side and they are often our most vulnerable road-users,” he said.

Lukewarm water or a covered windscreen the night before were often the best ways to deal with a frosty windscreen, and allowing plenty of time to adequately clear the glass.

“It is not just a 30-second job,” he said.

Burgerhout said sunstrike was also a serious issue at this time of year for motorists.

“Where we are, anyone driving to Christchurch in the morning is experiencing it and the same for driving back in the evening,” he said.

“We had a spate of crashes involving sunstrike on Thompsons Track a couple of years ago and while I don’t believe we have had many recently, it is important for people to remember to adjust their speed if their visibility is limited.”

The witness to a serious crash in Christchurch is pleading with youth to take responsibility for their driving after a teenager was left with critical injuries and is fighting for his life in ICU. Rose Kerr was one of the first people at the scene of a single-vehicle crash on Cresswell Ave in Burwood at 9pm on Saturday.

As a nearby resident, Kerr said she was alerted by a loud bang and went outside to find a SUV with five young males in it had crashed and flipped onto its roof.

One of the passengers, a 19-yearold male, was trapped inside.

“It had a sun visor on the top of the roof, and the kid was hanging out of that,” Kerr said.

“One of my neighbours went and got a plank to lift the car off him until the services arrived, but we couldn’t pull him out because his body was trapped.

“He was flailing around with his legs and his arms, so we had to tell him to try and keep still until emergency services came. He was in a hell of a lot of pain.”

Kerr said once emergency services arrived, it took them a while to remove the injured passenger.

A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said he was taken to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition.

A Canterbury District Health Board spokeswoman confirmed yesterday he was in a serious but stable condition in the intensive care unit.

Kerr said she had spoken with the patient’s friend and was told the teenager received fractured ribs, a broken pelvis and brain injuries. He is reportedly in an induced coma.

“The vehicle was a write-off. It’s a wonder there were any survivors,” she said.

“The other four were alright which was very fortunate, but if there was another car coming the other way, they would have been a goner.”

“These kids are just mad. They have to be responsible for their actions,” she said. “Through all this, they have to learn from it, but it’s a terrible way to learn.”

A police spokeswoman said the Serious Crash Unit examined the scene of the crash on Saturday and inquiries are ongoing.

Women raising money to help women

The support services provided by Women’s Refuge might fly under the radar, but they’re services that are growing in demand in the Ashburton District.

Manager Dawn Rangi-Smith said the Ashburton District’s caseload was growing both in the number of clients and the complexity of the issues they were dealing with.

She’s putting the growth in client numbers down to victims becoming more willing to seek help through greater awareness in the community of how and where to go for help.

In towns the size of Ashburton it was easier for issues of violence within a home to be noticed by neighbours and appropriate authorities notified, Rangi-Smith said.

“People are more willing to speak up and that’s what we want to happen.”

With many women and families who came into the refuge net, there were often other agencies involved in their lives and that meant they became part of a wraparound service,

she said.

And in towns Ashburton’s size it also meant it was easier to keep tabs on people who were part of that service and to keep and eye on their welfare.

Ashburton is visited weekly by an outreach worker from the Timaru refuge.

Education was and remained key in reducing levels of family violence. Women needed to know that living in a violent relationship was not normal, they had options, that they could leave and that there were places they could go where they would receive help, she said.

“Don’t stay in your relationship for your children, leave for your children, you do more damage to them by staying.”

Traditionally women in violent domestic situations were the ones who left, often with nothing but the clothes they were wearing but there’a a new initiative now that provides protection for them to remain in a family home. But, like all of these initiatives, a lot of money was being spent to keep women safe, something that should be their right, she said.

While central government provided a large slice of refuge funding, each year, Rangi-Smith’s Central South Island refuge is faced with raising about $100,000 to fund it’s programmes. And while a percentage of that shortfall is made up by grants from community funding organisations, it relied on donations from community groups.

On Wednesday Ashburton County Lions gave the refuge $1200, money raised by a Mother’s Day raffle and the generosity of the community in supporting that raffle meant a pool of money, that would be put to good use for clients within the Ashburton District, Rangi Smith said.

“It’s likely to go towards resources for programmes for children and adults; we like to put the money back into the community where i was raised,” she said.

Women’s groups were particularly good at raising money for refuge service. Collectively the money raised by women’s organisations all added up to a sizeable sum, Rangi-Smith said.

Training takes over village

Last weekend you could have been forgiven for thinking a search and rescue operation was going on in Lake Coleridge Village, but it was just the Methven LandSAR group conducting their annual training event in the area.

Methven LandSAR chairman Don Geddes said a large amount of planning went in to the weekend focused on keeping the group’s skills sharp.

“It is just an in-house exercise for the Methven group but this one was a bit different as there was more focus on urban search and rescue,” he said.

Geddes said the group has been attending an increased amount of urban search and rescues involving missing people that are wandering, often suffering from mental disabilities.

The training weekend involved the collaboration of many organisations based in the area and of the village itself.

“We engaged the local rural fire force, the local civil defence, we had a search dog there,” he said.

“We also communicated with the landowners up there as it was likely we would end up on their property so we did flyer drops and asked them if they would be okay with us going on to their property and if not we avoided those areas.”

The Saturday consisted of five training modules for the group, including tracking, river crossing and working with search dogs.

“It is good to work with the search dogs so we know what to do around them so we don’t contaminate scents for them,” he said.

On the Sunday, the group set up a search through the village and surrounding areas, which involved some willing volunteers who lived in the village.

“We set up an incident and had people door knocking talking to anyone (as part of the urban search and rescue) and a bit of wilderness work as well and we got a lot of benefit out of it,” he said.

“We normally have two or three people that are happy to be guinea pigs and we go out to a bit of land and get permission from the owner or go to DOC (Department of Conservation) land and run a search there.”

Geddes said the hard work that had gone in to planning the training exercise had paid off, especially for the urban search and rescue elements.

“We seem to have a lot more people living to older ages and the mental disabilities that come with that seem to be growing and there are more people wandering off so it is a good thing to practice, Geddes said.

Four rescued from drifting raft Call for students to represent New Zealand at summit NZME

Four stricken sailors have been rescued from a drifting liferaft after abandoning their yacht near Great Barrier Island. The four crewmen abandoned ship 90km eastnorth-east of Great Barrier Island.

Rescue Co-ordination Centre NZ (RCCNZ) was monitoring the yacht’s position, after it was alerted by satellite phone that the yacht, the Squander, had suffered rigging damage while trying to reach Tonga, and was turning back.

At 9.30am RCCNZ then received a dis-

tress alert from its emergency beacon as the four crew abandoned their yacht into their life raft.

A Maersk container ship in the area was able to get near the stricken yachties but was unable to make the rescue.

Two Auckland Westpac Rescue helicopters flew to the scene, and one was able to successfully winch them from their liferaft at 12.30pm.

RCCNZ Manager Mike Hill said the rescue highlighted how important it was to carry the appropriate emergency communications equipment.

Mount Hutt College’s Caitlin Smith is urging fellow Mid Canterbury students, aged 15 to 20, to attend next month’s New Zealand China Youth Leadership Summit.

They will not have to travel as far as she did when she went to the summit last year, in China.

It is much closer to home this time, at St Andrew’s College in Christchurch.

The week-long residential programme from July 13 will celebrate the close relationship between sister cities in New Zealand and China by bringing together up to 100 young student leaders from the two nations.

Organisers say staying on campus ensures a fully immersive experience, with evening workshops, projects and other activities planned to round out and enrich the daily programme. A non-residential option is also available, and on the itinerary, running to July 23, are special topic days in Christchurch, Queenstown and Dunedin.

Senior high school student leaders, along with first-year tertiary students, are invited to apply.

As one of the summit leaders this year, Caitlin wants to see others benefit from the same experiences she had last year.

“It was so valuable, you learn so much.

You learn the skills to be able to communicate and overcome language barriers,” Caitlin said.

“I want to be a secondary school teacher, and this has been helpful leading into

that, by giving me the skills to communicate with people from different cultures.”

Fellow Mount Hutt College pupil Amelia Taylor was just as enthusiastic about the benefits of the summit.

“I was shy before I went and would tend to be very reserved if I was in a group. Now, I’m super confident and can talk to anyone,” Amelia said.

“It was a big confidence booster, you get forced out of your comfort zone. I’m planning to study event management next year and I think it has been great preparation for that.”

Founder Jan Fitz-Gerald says delegates would learn about the importance of China-New Zealand long-term relations and gain an understanding of each other’s culture and customs.

“We will provide opportunities for all students to develop skills, knowledge and capabilities to be global citizens and effective future leaders in a challenging world,” Fitz-Gerald said.

Keynote speaker Stephen Jacobi, of the NZ China Council, will be joined by other speakers, covering topics such as leadership in a cross-cultural environment, being prepared and working together, global relations, cultural intelligence, social responsibility and resilience.

Students will also produce and present a group project.

One step closer to career Forget the car, the swanky holiday or the latest iPhone. An Ashburton student, who’s just won a $2500 scholarship from industry association Agcarm, has more practical uses for the cash.

Imogen Redpath will use her winnings to buy a new stethoscope, textbooks and wet weather gear for her calving placement. But most, she says, will be put aside until the fifth year of her Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree – to help fund her practice placements.

The Massey University student says the scholarship will be a huge help as it allows her to focus on her studies.

“It relieves a lot of the financial stress that comes with studying for the degree, both on me and my family,” she said.

Always sure of her chosen career path, the 21-year-old says she wanted to be a vet since she was nine.

“Animals have always been a huge element of my life and I’ve always lived among a variety of animals.”

In the veterinary field, you always feel like you’re making a positive contribution, she said.

“There is something new and different every day – it’s ever-changing and evolving – and you are helping people, animals and farmers.

“In one day you could go from birthing calves, vaccinating cows, to a dog with a broken leg.”

A lot of the work that veterinarians do would be impossible without the use of veterinary pharmaceutical products and there’s a need for veterinarians, farmers, pharmaceutical companies and regulatory bodies to work together to avoid resistance issues and ensure the continued, Redpath said.

“Otherwise the health of both humans and animals is ultimately going to be compromised.”

She is a keen advocate of increased investment and research into veterinary medicines.

At the moment she is unsure what type of animal care she will specialise in, but she has a keen interest in mixed practice veterinary care.

Redpath says she will always call Ashburton home, but is currently living in Palmerston North where she is halfway through her degree.

“It’s tough to get accepted into the degree and it is a lot of work once you are in.”

With her head in a textbook every evening, there’s no time for a social life, she said.

She’s also had to push the pause button on her favourite sport, but says she is getting a bit more of a life back.

In brief Teens named Police have formally released the names of the two teenagers who died in a crash in Oamaru North on Wednesday night. Police said they were Michael Shelford Mauheni, 17, and Kaylem Rayne Webb-Hirst, 16, of Oamaru. Kaylem, a former Waitaki Boys’ High School pupil who recently left the school, was named by his family as one of the people who died when the vehicle in which he was a passenger crashed and caught fire at the intersection of TY Duncan and Shortland roads about 11pm on Wednesday. The 18-year-old driver of the vehicle, also a former Waitaki Boys’ pupil, was seriously injured in the crash and remains in a stable condition in Dunedin Hospital.

No tsunami threat The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management has cleared New Zealand of a second tsunami threat following another earthquake near the Kermadec Islands. The region was rocked by a second earthquake shortly before 5.30pm yesterday which registered magnitude 6.6 following a magnitude 7.0 at 10.55am.

A Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management spokesman said there may be some strong currents but there was nothing to indicate a threat to life and safety in New Zealand.

Pilots killed after planes collide NZME Two people are dead after their light planes crashed into each other and then caught fire on their final approach to Hood Aerodrome near Masterton yesterday.

An eyewitness has described the moment of impact, saying, “There was a hell of a bang and then they fell apart and came spiralling down”.

Michael O’Donnell of the Wairarapa Aero Club confirmed that one of their members had been killed in a mid-air collision with what is reported to have been an aircraft from Skydive Wellington, which operates from Hood Aerodrome.

“Clearly the club is in shock.

We’re working with authorities,” O’Donnell said. “It’s not something we would expect in this weather.”

Weather conditions were fine in Masterton, with clear skies and sun shining.

It is understood that at the time of the collision, the skydiving plane was returning to the aerodrome after skydivers jumped.

“All I saw was these two planes hit and the debris just coming down.”

She was feeling shaky after the incident. “When you saw all the debris coming down, it was like, ‘Oh my God’.

The incident comes two days after a person died following a light plane crash near the north end of Coromandel Forest Park.

In that incident the as-yet-unnamed pilot of the two-seater aircraft took off from Whitianga Airport in the Coromandel early on Friday morning bound for Ardmore Airport near Manurewa in Auckland.

But bad weather conditions in Manurewa forced the pilot to turn

around and head back to the Coromandel.

The plane then disappeared from satellite and radar over Coromandel Forest Park in rugged bushland not far from Coromandel town, and was reported missing to rescue teams at Maritime NZ at 4.25pm on Saturday, spokeswoman Stephanie Morison said.

Rescue teams were unable to search from the air because of bad weather on Saturday night.

Police had been working with Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand, New Zealand’s national search and rescue organisation, and LandSAR to find the plane since Saturday night.

It was spotted at about 10am yesterday by ground search teams near the north end of Coromandel Forest Park, police said.

“The sole occupant of the plane was found deceased,” police said.

“The death will be referred to the coroner.

“The Civil Aviation Authority will investigate the crash.”

The pilot, who has not yet been formally identified by police, was a member of Mercury Bay Aero Club.

Gun pulled after four-year-old’s theft AP An Arizona couple is suing the city of Phoenix and its police department for $10 million after a video captured officers drawing their weapons and threatening to shoot the family of four.

On May 29, Dravon Ames and his fiance, Iesha Harper, went on a family outing with their two children, London, 1, and Island, 4.

Unbeknown to them, their 4-year-old took a doll from a Family Dollar Store that they had just visited, according to a notice of claim dated Wednesday, filed by former state Attorney General Thomas Horne, who is representing Ames and Harper.

A police patrol unit followed the couple’s car, and once the family pulled into their babysitter’s apartment complex, an officer approached the vehicle with his gun drawn and yanked open the front door, the claim said.

Despite department rules that require police to wear body-cams, the Phoenix officers were not wearing them, the claim said. But passersby recorded the encounter.

“I’m going to put a cap in your a--,” one officer said to Ames as a second policeman, whose weapon was also drawn and pointed at Ames, walked up to the car, according to the video. “I’m going to shoot

Both statements, Horne wrote in the claim, were made in front of the couple’s children, who were in the rear of the vehicle.

The first officer pulled Ames, 22, from the car, pushed his head into the pavement, handcuffed him and yelled that Ames better follow orders, according to the claim.

The officer threw Ames against the car, ordered him to spread his legs and “kicked him in the right leg so hard that the father collapsed”. Then, the officer dragged him

upright and punched him in the back, the claim said.

Once Ames was handcuffed and inside the patrol car, the officers refocused their attention on Harper and the children, according to the claim.

The two officers pointed their weapons at the visibly pregnant 24-year-old Harper and her children, according to the claim.

“The first officer grabbed the mother and the baby around both of their necks, and tried to take the baby out of the mother’s hand,” the claim alleged. “He told her to put the baby on the ground, which she was unwilling to do because the baby could not walk, and the ground consisted of hot pavement.”

The officer tried to rip Harper’s infant from her arms, the claim stated. Eventually he threw Harper, who had handed the children to a bystander, into the police car face first, then handcuffed her.

“I could have shot you in front of your f----- kids,” he said, according to the claim.

Since May 29, the 4-year-old has been having nightmares and is wetting the bed, and Ames, whose car was impounded, has been limping and is without transportation to get to work, the claim stated.

Neither Ames nor Harper were arrested or ticketed, though they were detained by the police, the Phoenix New Times reported.

New start in the south Bungy jumping, skydiving, travel and maybe even a permanent home one day — Liam Stewart, son of Rachel Hunter and rocker Sir Rod Stewart, has revealed plans for his new life in Queenstown.

Stewart, 24, has embedded himself in Queenstown and has been enjoying some good play on the ice with his new team, Queenstown’s SkyCity Stampede. This comes after he missed most of last year due to concussion, which kept him off the ice. He had been wanting to play in New Zealand for a couple of years but it never worked out due to his commitments in Britain, including being part of the national team.

Agency seeks disposal places for dead whales

Chris Martin has reportedly split from Dakota Johnson. The 42-year-old musician – who was previously married to Gwyneth Paltrow – has told friends that he’s no longer in a relationship with Dakota, who is best-known for starring in the Fifty Shades movies. A source told The Sun newspaper: “Chris and Dakota were very easygoing and always seemed really happy together. The high-profile duo dated for 20 months and had previously discussed tying the knot.

Last year, an insider described their romance as “serious”.

AP At least one Washington state waterfront landowner has said yes to a request to allow dead grey whales to decompose on their property.

So many grey whale carcasses have washed up this year that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries says it has run out of places to take them.

In response, the agency has asked landowners to volunteer property as a disposal

site for the carcasses. By doing so, landowners can support the natural process of the marine environment, and skeletons left behind can be used for educational purposes, officials said.

But the carcasses can be up to 12m-long.

That’s a lot to decay, and it could take months. Landowner Mario Rivera of Port Hadlock, Washington, said the smell is intermittent and “isn’t that bad”.

The federal agency said that about 30 whales have stranded on Washington’s coast this year, the most in two decades.

On the US West coast, about 70 whales have been found dead this year along California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska, the most since 2000. About five were found on British Columbia beaches.

Still, that’s a small fraction of the total number because most sink or wash up in remote areas and are unrecorded.

Officials say the grey whale population remains strong at about 27,000.

Lime is being used to help break down the whale carcass on the beach near where Rivera and Worwag live.

Family hold British village to ransom NZME The infamous family of ‘unruly tourists’ who blazed a trail of destruction around New Zealand are now holding British villages to ransom by threatening to build ramshackle homes unless locals buy land back off them for huge amounts of money.

The Doran family first hit the headlines during the New Zealand summer after a video emerged of them littering a waterfront lawn area of Takapuna Beach.

A young British boy was filmed threatening to knock a woman’s “brains out” when the family were challenged by concerned locals.

Allegations then followed the group around New Zealand as they were accused

of also attempting to rip off several restaurants and motels. Other men linked to the group ran a series of roofing scams, hoodwinking unsuspecting victims out of thousands of dollars.

At the height of their notoriety, Auckland Mayor Phil Goff labelled them “a bunch of a***holes” before the unwelcome tourists headed back home.

Now residents in picturesque British villages fear their way of life will be ruined unless they cough up money to the family.

The first to be targeted is Worcestershire’s Dough Bank.

The Dorans reportedly paid £9000 (NZ$17,000) for a small piece of land in the village, then demanded more than £600,000 ($1.1 million) if they wanted it

back. Soon after buying the plot, the Daily Mail says more than 20 members of the family had moved their caravans and vehicles onto the land, often blocking narrow lanes. Locals claim the family threatened violence against people who challenged them.

One Dough Bank resident said: “Family members would take it in turns to urinate, or worse, in people’s driveways. They turned their site, which was once beautiful, unspoilt woodland, into an eyesore.

They built 10ft high breeze-block walls, which the council made them take down, and dumped hundreds of tonnes of rubble in heaps everywhere.”

Another village, in nearby Astley, is facing a similar fight with the family.

Spice Girl to tour Aust The Spice Girls are bringing their tour to Australia. Mel B made the announcement on stage at the end of the group’s final show at London’s Wembley Stadium, reports news.com.au. “We’ll see you in February in Australia!” she said. Details about the Spice Girls tour, which will be the first time they’ve ever played a concert in Australia, have not yet been announced. The Spice Girls embarked on their reunion tour — without Victoria Beckham — in late May and have played in Dublin, Cardiff, Manchester, Coventry, Sunderland, Edinburgh and Bristol.

Hundreds of artworks flood in

Hundreds of artworks flooded into the Ashburton Art Gallery at the weekend, leading up to Mid Canterbury’s premier art event next month.

Opening night for the Ashburton Art Society’s 55th Annual Art Exhibition will be on July 1 and tickets are now on sale. The exhibition will run until July 26.

Receiving day was on Saturday, when the majority of the 348 entries were dropped off by their creators.

There is an additional 80 entries from guest artists.

Among the latter group was jeweller Adele Stewart, who brought her Botanicals Collection and latest range of The Wing Collector to the art gallery on Friday.

The Little River artist, formerly of Methven, said she had modelled her latest collection on the beautiful wings of insects, including butterflies, moths and beetles.

“All the intricate details … they inspire people to look up close and appreciate all the finer details,” Stewart said.

Fellow guest artists are local woodturner Mark Rant, acrylic

artist Sheryl McCammon, potter Jenny Shearer, watercolour, ink and oil artist Sue Syme, stoneware creators LIGHT + vessel, and mixed media artist Clare Wilcox.

Society committee member Lyndsay McCosker said it was fantastic to see a high standard of work coming in, and she expected a flurry of sales on opening night.

Choirs set to combine for local concert

Mid Canterbury music lovers can look forward to quality local performances to brighten up the cold days this winter.

This Saturday the Mid Canterbury Choir is combining with the Selwyn Community Choir to present Life & Love. It will be 2pm at the Sinclair Centre on Park Street, with $10 general admission.

Directed by Jocelyn Jones and accompanied by Deborah Sloper, the Mid Canterbury Choir will sing some well-known songs, including Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Somewhere Out There and Life is Better When You Sing.

The Selwyn Community Choir, led by mother and son duo Linley Thomas and Caelan Thomas, will entertain with songs including Crazy Little Thing Called Love and Season of Love.

The Selwyn Community Choir has over 70 members ranging

from teens to grandparents, and prides itself on continuing to grow in strength, size and confidence.

Mid Canterbury Choir spokesperson Carol Gunn said she hoped locals would come along to enjoy the afternoon of song.

As well as their individual items, the choirs would combine to present Te Aroha, Somebody to Love, Hello Goodbye and Circle of Life. Thomas had helped Mid Canterbury members out with learning these.

“The Mid Canterbury Choir has enjoyed borrowing Caelan to teach us the combined songs, at just 19 he is amazing,” she said.

Then on August 11, the Ashburton Musical Club will perform Opera Here at 2pm, featuring visiting artists Lois Johnston and Claire Barton.

It will follow a concert arranged by the club’s committee

on July 14, where visitors are welcome.

Earlier this month the club held a concert presented by the Chaperone Trio playing six hands at the piano.

Chaperone Trio members Jane Jarrett, Jillaine Wilson and Margaret Maw are registered piano teachers in Waimakariri.

Spokesperson Janice Allen said it had been fantastic to see this relatively new art form in the history of piano repertoire on display.

The trio had played piano duets for many years before deciding to explore the possibilities of a new threesome repertoire.

Trinity College London releasing their exam syllabus of Piano For Six Hands in 2014 had provided the catalyst, and the trio were the first to sit the Advanced Certificate in New Zealand, passing with distinction in 2017.

Celebrating the dedicated and the selfless W

here would we be without the kindness and selflessness of our volunteers?

National Volunteer Week kicked into gear yesterday for another year and it’s a wonderful opportunity for the community, and New Zealand as a whole, to pay homage to the work done by volunteers within our communities.

Without the work and efforts of these people major parts of our lives would suffer, some parts might even not exist because it’s the work done behind the scenes, without the search of gratification or reward, that so often makes things tick.

And it stretches across all parts of life too, sport being the

obvious, but there are countless committees and organisations around that function solely on the requirement of people giving up their own time to ensure that things happen, and happen in a smooth and organised manner.

Whether it’s the person who goes and puts the flags out on the local rugby field on a Saturday morning, those hardy folk who

are more than happy to stand and marshal at a running event or those who pitch in at the local volunteer shop – each is as valuable as the other.

But it’s especially pertinent to pay a special mention to those who volunteer to stand at the front line during some of the most confronting scenes in humanity.

Our emergency service workers, those firefighters who run into burning buildings while others run out, those men and women who are the first onto a scene of tragedy and manage to compose themselves in such a manner that doesn’t cause detriment to the situation.

These are the people we should be especially thankful for.

What they see and deal with on a weekly, and in some cases daily, basis would be enough to level most people.

I’ve spoken to firefighters who are still haunted by the scenes they come across at car accidents or house fires, yet as soon as that call goes out to get back into the truck or ambulance and do it all again, they’re the first to be lined up at the door ready to go.

Our district really is a better place for their roles within it.

And we need more volunteers.

Not just in the emergency services sector, but across the board.

It could be serving on a committee, giving some time each week to head down and help out at Riding for the Disabled, or standing at the front counter of

the local Red Cross shop, there’s always a need for more.

It would take a pretty unique situation for a group or organisation to say no to someone who was willing to give their time to a good cause, everyone could use a hand now and then.

This week we are going to see a number of people from within the community taking up the challenge set by Volunteering Mid Canterbury to get out and lend a hand somewhere around the district, and I’m happy to be able to be a part of that.

But the real challenge is extending that past just this week of recognition for all that volunteers do in our community. It’s a year-round task, not just seven days of the year.

Support for rural communities O

ne of my regular frustrations about sitting in Parliament is the views that are expressed by a handful of politicians and some in our media about our primary sector.

As recently as yesterday a senior official in the Government said that New Zealand is still too caught up in “thinking that we’ll make some money now and look after the environment later”.

Part of me can understand it.

Many of those commentating from Auckland and Wellington have never set foot on a farm, much less seen some of the work that many of our farmers are doing to improve the environment around them.

Naturally there are challenges, and have been for some time with nutrient use and water quality. The National Policy Statement on Freshwater Management has put strict requirements on regional councils about setting limits, and in Canterbury we’ve seen the effects of that with Plan Change Five.

There is a role for Government in enforcing standards and weeding out the cowboys, which is the case in any industry.

But that discussion often ignores what farmers have done, almost always voluntarily, through improvements like riparian planting and fencing of waterways.

It also obscures some of the really worrying trends in farming.

This constant attempt to beat up on our rural communities by our friends in the major centres has a cost.

As your local MP I spend a decent amount of time meeting people in my office here in Ashburton, but I also get out and visit farmers and their families right across Canterbury.

I’m embarrassed at the number of times I’ve been told that children have been bullied at school because mum and dad are dairy farmers.

The impacts aren’t just on the kids. Seventy per cent of rural New Zealanders say they feel more stressed than five years ago.

Mycoplasma bovis has contributed to that, but the story is far more complex than just one issue.

Rural and provincial areas like ours have higher rates of suicide than in cities. Last year 20 farmers took their own lives. Eighteen were blokes.

While there’s quite a lot to criticise in the Government’s recent budget in the way of new taxes, one thing that I will give credit

for is the increase in mental health funding.

But I’m adamant we have to see more of that support in regions like ours, not just directed to the major centres.

It’s one of the reasons that last week at Fieldays at Mystery Creek we launched a plan for a mobile health clinic as part of a wider health programme for rural communities.

Health practitioners would be able to travel to more remote parts of the country where full services often aren’t available.

The programme also contains a commitment to restore some of the vital health services that have been lost in the last year.

Down south the closure of

the Lumsden Maternity Centre means in recent weeks mothers have been giving birth on the side of the road as they travel the additional hour-and-a-half.

People living in smaller centres or rural communities shouldn’t be made worse off by those sitting in Wellington. Whether you live in Ashburton or Auckland, Carew or Christchurch, we all deserve a fair go.

Argyle Park The word was out, there were “SIGNS” up at Argyle Park telling dog owners what was required of them, while walking their four-legged family members.

We fronted up to the first sign, yes there are four of them … On closer inspection it was noted that the map seemed to be out of proportion, yes it was an OLD MAP of Argyle Park and the boundary markings did not include the newly-acquired land with the recently completed walking track, which goes right down to the trees on Farm Road.

After reading the article in the Guardian,

where Jane Donaldson said the signs spelt out very clearly that dogs can only run free along the creek on the park’s northern boundary, and along a strip of land on its Farm Road edge.

If that is the case why is this area along Farm Road not even highlighted on the map! I see nothing clear about these signs at all.

Who checked this map before it was made into four expensive, colourful signs.

Jane if you can’t do it right, don’t do it at all ... waste of ratepayers’ money.

olden sands, swaying palms, surf breaks, supreme coastal vistas and ridiculously ritzy real estate are the common denominators along this sun-splashed stretch of the Pacific.

They all beckon as ready-made urban escapes, alluring oceanfront bolt-holes that beat to a distinctively relaxed beach-vibe.

I based myself at Laguna

South of Los Angeles, Orange County’s blingy coastal sweep comprises a necklace of gleaming seaside resort towns, including surf-crazy Huntington Beach, Newport, San Clemente and Laguna Beach, writes Mike Yardley.

Beach, one of the swankiest communities in this seaside pageant, a cliff-and-cove studded enclave of celebratory living in style.

Catalina’s architecture is often of a grand style.

Beach is like stepping into a vivid painting, aesthetically rich with its snug coves, dramatic Amalfi-like cliffs, deep blue seas and art-filled waterfront parks.

Partly hemmed into canyons and partly strung across towering coastal bluffs, Laguna is topographically compelling with 30 designated beaches and coves to take your pick from.

From Pacific Coast Highway, stake out the plethora of stairways that lead you down to hidden, pristine coves. It’s like a glorious treasure hunt for beach perfection.

Beyond the beachside delights of Orange County, I escaped from the mainland on a day-trip to one of Southern California’s beloved jewels, Catalina Island. There’s a variety of fast-ferry services that operate from various ports.

I plumped for a day-return service from Dana Point, just 15 minutes south of Laguna Beach.

After marvelling over the frolicking dolphins during the one-hour crossing, I arrived into Avalon and its crescent-shaped harbour, edged by golden sand and palm trees, and backdropped by steep-sided hills.

Had I been whisked to away to the Mediterranean?

The clean air, crystal clear water and blissful absence of traffic cuts an instantly seductive impression in this old-school bastion of laid-back charm.

With a permanent population of just 4000, vehicle numbers

are strictly limited and there’s actually a 17 year waiting list to be granted a permit to drive one here. Renting a golf cart is your best bet, for cross-island pursuits. Or the bus. It’s how the island rolls.

It’s a red-letter year for Catalina because they’re celebrating the centennial of the Wrigley family’s ownership and development of the island. Yes, William Wrigley Jnr, the chewing-gum kingpin, purchased the island in 1919, and successfully developed it into a year-round pleasure island.

The Wrigley family continue to remain a powerful preservation influence today, vesting 88 per cent of the island in their non-profit foundation, the Santa Catalina Island Conservancy.

From 1921 to 1951, Avalon was the spring training ground of the Wrigley-owned Chicago Cubs, which helped spruik the island as a glamour getaway.

During Hollywood’s golden age, it became the sojourn of choice for solitude-seeking movie stars, while on-location productions have been a constant.

Hollywood also flocked here to shoot productions, a glorified back-lot for Tinsel Town, with one of the most notable classics being Mutiny on the Bounty in 1935.

Framed – Catalina Island caught in all its glory.

More than 500 productions have been filmed on-location since, with Avalon’s movie-set good looks often doubling as a South Pacific tropical island.

The Catalina Island Museum is a do-not-miss, lustily showcasing its proud silver screen legacy and also staging a lively roster of temporary exhibitions. Houdini and Jaws have just been featured. They’re currently staging a magnificent centennial exhibition on William Wrigley Jnr. One of the quirkiest sights on the island are the roaming North American bison. About a dozen of them were freighted over to the island in 1924 to be used in a Zane Grey film.

They bred like rabbits and a herd of around 200 bison still free-roam the island’s interior wildlands today.

Avalon’s legendary landmark is the iconic Casino building, which William Wrigley commissioned in 1929, as attention-seeking tourist bait. This astonishing art deco building is 12 stories high, a veritable entertainment palace, with extraordinary murals adorning the soaring façade.

On the lower level, the sumptuous Avalon Theatre was the USA’s first cinema designed specifically for talking pictures, while the biggest head-turner is the world’s largest circular ballroom. Big bands and jazz concerts still stir this storied venue to life.

As a keen hiker, I was excited to discover the island is criss-crossed with over 260 kilometres of walking tracks, not that you have to be

a gonzo hiker to enjoy Catalina’s scenic grandeur.

My favourite short trek is the Garden-to-Sky Trail, a two-hour return hike to the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Gardens. The payoff is the dazzling panorama.

The gardens were developed by Ada Wrigley, showcasing plants endemic to California’s coastal islands.

William Wrigley built the memorial as his final resting place. He was indeed buried here for a few years, but his family decided they didn’t want his grave to be a tourist attraction so they relocated his remains to Forest Lawn in Glendale.

A shorter walk is the one-hour return hike up Mt. Ada to the old Wrigley homestead, for postcard-perfect views over the horseshoe curve of Avalon.

Cool off with a Buffalo Milk, Catalina’s signature cocktail, named after the bison that roam the hills. It varies from bar-to-bar but generally tastes like a white Russian with some fruity extras.

Original Jack’s Country Kitchen and Bakery is a great spot for lunch.

For lunch on the run, the bakery’s bolillos are irresistible. Fronting the beach, Crescent Avenue throbs with a myriad of schlocky souvenirs. For something a little more discerning, buy some Catalina tiles. Blending art deco, Moorish and Mexican influences, the Catalina design decorates many public spaces and a tile or two, crafted from local clay, makes for the ideal Catalina keepsake.

Reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, for 10 minutes or until potato is tender. Set aside to cool.

Coach doesn’t hold back

Town took on country in hockey for the second Sunday running yesterday, and doing battle for possession on the turf were Jacob Robinson (country) and Jethro Dove (town). Last weekend’s town versus country action saw youngsters from years three to five battle it out, and yesterday it was the turn of players from years six, seven and eight.

Second loss for Wakanui Northern Hearts handed Wakanui just their second loss of this season’s South Canterbury senior men’s hockey competition in Timaru on Saturday, 3-2.

Hearts started strong and got on the board first late in the first quarter, but Wakanui were starting to find their groove and were the first to convert in the second quarter after long periods of attack and defence going from end to end.

Thomas White found himself with space at the top of the circle and a simple layoff to Andy Moore saw the ball put into the right hand lower corner of the goal.

Wakanui also had the better

start in the second half, with a break from behind heavy on defence followed by a good overhead from Nick Sinclair finding Scott Marshall one-on-one with the goalie and wrong footing him to score.

Hearts struck back with a similar break almost immediately though and a cracking shot found the top left corner to square it up 2-all.

Hearts weren’t done for the quarter, either, again getting in behind the Wakanui defence and in a goalmouth scramble and finding the back of the net for the third time to take a 3-2 lead into the final quarter.

Both sides applied heat in

the fourth quarter and while Wakanui player/coach Sam Moore said he felt his side had the better finish to the game, they were unable to convert that dominance into points.

Losing the instrumental figure of Hayden Sinclair to a hamstring injury just a couple of minutes in wasn’t an ideal start for Wakanui, but overall they still put in a pretty good performance, Moore said.

“It was a really good game.

“It was hard and fast and we’re a bit of a chameleon team – we tend to play the way the other team plays,” Moore said.

So on Saturday they tried to match the hard and fast style

of Northern Hearts and in fact stuck with them for most of the match.

The loss was only Wakanui’s second of the season, with their first coming at the hands of Oamaru side Tainui.

Wakanui had last played Northern Hearts at the start of round one and beat them in what turned out to be the only loss Hearts would suffer in round one, but turning the tables in round two means Hearts that are leading the pack mid-way through round two.

Meanwhile, in the senior women’s competition, Mid Canterbury’s sole team – Hampstead – sat out the bye on Saturday.

Good on Football Ferns coach Tom Sermanni for telling it straight.

His answers were refreshingly honest, after New Zealand’s limp 2-0 defeat to Canada at the Women’s World Cup yesterday.

Given the circumstances and what was at stake, there is simply no way to sugarcoat things.

It was one of the most disappointing performances by a Ferns side at a World Cup. At a time when the players – collectively and individually – should have been looking to play the game of their lives, almost no one did.

A defeat to Canada, who are ranked No. 5 in the world and look a superb team, is no disgrace, but losing without putting up a decent fight is.

The team in red were excellent, but their opponents rolled out the red carpet.

While coaches in the past have sprinkled words like ‘gallant’, ‘brave’ and ‘courageous’ in these situations, the vastly experienced Sermanni was having none of that.

His team were poor, and he made no attempt to mask that.

“We were holding on from the start to be honest,” said Sermanni.

“I don’t think at any stage we got a foothold in the game.

“We were thoroughly outplayed.

I thought we never really at any stage had an opportunity to be in the game.”

New Zealand teams can rarely match world ranked opponents on a technical level, but often compensate with desire, intensity and focus.

That didn’t happen yesterday, and Sermanni admitted the Ferns were second best to everything.

“I don’t think we won a challenge,” said Sermanni.

“I don’t think we won any kind of loose ball. I don’t think at any time we got close enough to put pressure on the Canadian players.”

The statistics made sobering reading.

Canada had 22 shots on goal, twice hit the woodwork and had another attempt cleared off the line.

New Zealand had two attempts; an Olivia Chance volley that skewed well wide of the target and an Abby Erceg header late in the match, and Canadian keeper Stephanie Labbe didn’t have a save to make across the 90 minutes.

Canada also enjoyed 70 per cent possession, and at one point in the first half their possession rate was higher than the United States had enjoyed during their 13-0 rout of Thailand last week.

The Ferns were constantly under pressure with the ball, rarely managing sequences of more than three or four passes.

As Sermanni succintly pointed out, aside from the first five or six minutes, they were hardly in the game.

Late try gets Methven home

For the second time this season Methven have produced a try on full time to snatch a dramatic victory on the rugby field.

The latest came on Saturday in the second round of the Mid Canterbury Rugby Watters Cup competition, and the team on the receiving end were pre-competition favourites Southern, who just two weeks ago drew the Combined Country Cup final with Glenmark-Cheviot.

Southern led 20-3 at half time but were dominated by a below-strength Methven side in the second half, and with time almost up and his side down 20-14 Methven second-five Nete Caucau crossed for a game-changing try which had the home crowd on their feet.

It brought his side within one point, meaning if halfback Tyler Blackburn could land the conversion his side would take the win, and he pushed aside memories of a shocker he’d produced earlier in the game, and did just that.

The win meant that Methven are now one of two teams with two ticks in the wins column after two weeks, with the other team being Rakaia, who followed up their win last weekend over Hampstead, with a 30-14 win over Celtic at the Rakaia Domain on Saturday.

But it was at the Methven Domain where the day’s biggest talking point was found.

That one-point win over Southern came on a day where Methven were, thanks to injuries, without arguably their two biggest guns – former Tasman and Mid Canterbury players Brenton Connell (knee) and Gary Redmond (fractured jaw).

Methven had to call up a couple of old faces to the bench, and both – Chris Lock and Aofia Fagalima – found themselves in the thick of things as an ending most wouldn’t have picked at half time started to play out.

After a week off with the bye following their combined competition final draw, Southern tstarted strong and got on the board early with two Jon Dampney penalties.

Despite the slippery underfoot conditions, Matt McAtamney added to his list of top tries he’d scored this season shortly after to put his side out to a 13-0 lead, and when halfback Will MacKenzie spotted a hole beside a ruck and dotted down late in the half, Southern were up 20-0.

A Tyler Blackburn penalty right before the break put Methven on the board, but down 20-3 heading into the second 40 his side was up against it.

But they came out strong and slowly but surely started chipping away, with Blackburn adding a further two penalties to make it 20-9, before replacement winger Sam Luscombe crossed for a try in the corner to make it 20-14, and suddenly it was on.

As time ticked away, home fans started having flashbacks to the combined competition earlier

this season, where Methven captain and prop Matt Groom scored a try in the 86th minute to down the fancied Springston side.

With the clock at the field about to tick over 80 minutes, and Southern in possession, calls started ringing out on the field – “just kick it out!”.

So, the ball was kicked out.

But time wasn’t up.

That gave Methven possession back, and they quickly forced their way from the wrong end of the field to the right end of the field, where a string of infringements resulted in the sin-binning of the Southern hooker Ben Naylor well into injury time.

That left Southern with just 14 players to defend their line, and eventually Caucau found a gap and crossed for the try which Blackburn then converted to win the game.

Methven coach Jason Kjestrup didn’t watch the conversion, but it wasn’t because he couldn’t bear to watch.

“It was irrelevant, for me it was the performance and the guts that they showed to get to that point, that was the most important thing,” Kjestrup said.

“At the end there, I wasn’t confident after the first half that we could go 100 metres and hold onto the ball with it being the last play of the game, because we could barely go 10 metres in the first half without dropping the ball.”

They did though, and Southern coach Andrew Carr said Methven simply had more passion in that second half.

“But it’s a tough pill to swallow to lead the game for 88 or 89 minutes and lose in the last play,” Carr said.

Meanwhile, at Rakaia, five yellow cards were handed out in Rakaia’s 30-14 win over defending Watters Cup champions Celtic – two to Celtic, and three to Rakaia.

Rakaia – playing in pink socks and with pink strapping for Rakaia’s ladies’ day – played some good rugby at times, coach Terry Murray said.

But, it was the sort of game where they never really looked like they had it until the final whistle.

Jackson Donlan, Luke Leahoki Biko, Seta Koroitamana and Leps Seitava scored Rakaia’s tries, while Murray said Tim Hanrahan and Kody Nordqvist had standout games.

“The difference between the two teams was our on field leadership,” Murray said.

“Jackson Donlan, and when he

went off Seta and Andrew Letham steered the ship really well and I think that made a big difference on the field, especially when we were down to 13 players.”

Letham also tested his dropped goal skills late in the game, and landed it, to put the win beyond doubt.

Celtic coach Shane Enright said in the 20 minutes where his side was down to 14 men, Rakaia scored four tries. On the flip side, when Rakaia were down to 13 men Celtic were unable to capitalise.

Enright said basic skills let his side down and they needed to watch their discipline heading into a big match-up with Hampstead in the next round.

Rakaia meanwhile, are the team that get to face a Southern side smarting off their loss to Methven – the team that has the bye this coming weekend.

Fresh faces for the ABs

Jaguares surprise package AP The Sharks and Bulls seized the final two playoff places in Super Rugby on Saturday by prevailing in their winner-take-all South African derbies, completing a quarter-final lineup where the Jaguares of Argentina provide a surprise challenge, but New Zealand’s Crusaders remain on course for a third straight title.

While the Crusaders topping the league standings was predictable – they are the most successful team in the competition and the best in the southern hemisphere in recent years – the Jaguares threw up a significant shock by winning the South African conference and taking the No. 2 ranking for the playoffs.

Four New Zealand teams, two from South Africa, one from Australia and the Jaguares make up the last eight.

The Crusaders host the Highlanders and the Jaguares face the Chiefs in the first two quarters on Friday.

It’s the Hurricanes versus the Bulls and the ACT Brumbies, Australia’s only contender, versus the Sharks on Saturday.

The Durban-based Sharks beat the Cape Town-based Stormers 12-9 while the Pretoria-based Bulls scored seven tries, four of

them in the first 20 minutes, to defeat the Johannesburg-based Lions 48-27 and ending their run of three straight finals.

The Sharks sneaked into the playoffs via a last-minute try by center Lukhanyo Am. They had scored the only try of the game before that but the Stormers kicked their way to a 9-5 lead in a match of little creative flair.

That was until Am stepped in from the left touchline and weaved through a tiring Stormers defence to keep the Sharks’ season alive.

The Bulls conceded a try to Lions No. 8 Hacjivah Dayimani 16 seconds from kickoff but responded immediately and emphatically with powerful forward tries by Hanro Liebenberg, Marco van Staden and Lizo Gqoboka, and a sweeping backline move finished by Burger Odendaal.

The boot of Springboks flyhalf Elton Jantjies, starting at centre for the Lions, helped close it to 31-27 in the second half.

Wing Cornal Hendricks beat three men in a brilliant solo effort to change the momentum again for the Bulls, who added two more late tries.

Earlier, the Wellington-based Hurricanes took advantage of their bench strength to rally from

24-7 down at halftime to beat the Auckland-based Blues 29-24.

Having already qualified for the playoffs and assured of fourth place and a home quarter-final, the Hurricanes started an inexperienced combination.

The lineup was third string, and some of the starting backline had played fewer minutes in Super Rugby than the numbers on their backs.

The Blues took advantage and scored three first-half tries through centre Taniela Tele’a, winger Caleb Clarke and fullback Melani Nanai.

But when the Hurricanes rolled out the heavy artillery in the second half, especially scrumhalf T.J. Perenara, back-rower Ardie Savea and hooker Asafo Aumua, the tide turned and the Blues couldn’t score again.

Passive and defensive in the first half, the Hurricanes went on the attack, scoring tries through flyhalf Fletcher Smith, lock Isaia Walker-Leawere and winger Peter Umaga-Jensen.

Jackson Garden-Bachop kicked a late penalty to clinch the Hurricanes’ 12th win of the regular season.

“It was a bit of a tale of two halves, that’s for sure,” Hurricanes captain Dane Coles said.

“I’m just so proud of the young

lads. We threw some of the guys in the deep end and it wasn’t pretty in the first half.

“But the way they responded with a bit of a rev-up at halftime ... it was a good way to finish the round-robin.”

All Blacks centre Sonny Bill Williams returned for the Blues after almost 10 weeks out with a knee injury.

He produced a quiet performance in front of the New Zealand selectors.

The Brumbies went into the playoffs with their sixth straight victory, 40-27 over the Queensland Reds.

The Brumbies had already clinched first place in the Australian conference.

“We’re pleased with the way we’re performing at the moment and the growth in the team has been nice,” Brumbies flyhalf Christian Leali’ifano said.

“So we’ve just got to continue to keep working hard and hopefully we’ve got another few more weeks to go.

“Hopefully it doesn’t matter who we get.”

The Crusaders had a bye in the last round while the Jaguares finished the regular season, their best-ever in the competition, with a rampant 52-10 win over the Sunwolves.

Chiefs prop Angus Ta’avao could start and halfback TJ Perenara could spend some time at first five-eighths in the All Blacks’ first test of the year next month.

Fanciful?

Maybe, though the first All Blacks selection of the year – against Argentina in Buenos Aires – could be the most experimental since the unit which took on Japan last year.

That is likely if, as some think, this year’s Super Rugby final features the Crusaders and Hurricanes.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has already said that, if the Crusaders are in the final, he will stand down some players for that test. Ditto if the Hurricanes are the opposition.

Even without that, the July 21 test could throw up some unusual contenders for the World Cup squad. Like Ta’avao. He has been behind Ofa Tu’ungafasi, Nepo Laulala, the mysteriously absent Karl Tu’inukuafe and maybe even Chiefs team-mate Atu Moli, whom the All Blacks see as able to play both sides.

But a message has filtered down from on high that some New Zealand props are not as mobile and possess a lesser workrate than some encountered on the northern hemisphere tour last year.

Anyone who saw Ta’avao’s display in the Chiefs’ 59-8 dismantling of the Rebels will have seen his running, passing and carrying skills centre stage.

As for Perenara, it was fascinating to see him occasionally operating at first receiver for the Hurricanes last weekend. Several times he directed play outside the temporary halfback at rucks; his tactical kicking game was pretty good – interesting if, as expected, the All Blacks take only two first fives to Japan after the loss of Damian McKenzie.

Beauden Barrett or Richie Mo’unga could start against the Pumas with Perenara coming off the bench for some time there.

That would mean no room for a direct third halfback comparison between Brad Weber and Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi (or Bryn Hall) but other tests may be useful for that, if required.

There will be a number of senior All Blacks in the starting side against the Pumas. Pencil in, for example, Sonny Bill Williams, Ben Smith, Brodie Retallick, Liam Squire and Sam Cane – all of whom have not had as much rugby as others.

At hooker, Nathan Harris and Liam Coltman are neck-and-neck as third hooker.

Coltman has really come on this season, burgling turnovers regularly.

The Buenos Aires test would be ideal for analysing key loose forward options like Shannon Frizell and Akira Ioane, on the fringes of selection all year but needing a chance to show what he can do at this level.

Ashburton indoor bowler Mat Bassett has been recalled into the South Island Indoor Bowls team for their tour of the upper half of the North Island later this year.

Bassett, who plays out of the Willowby club, last represented his island in 2013 but through some strong results over the past couple of years is more then deserving of his call-up back into the side.

He will lead the men’s fours

on the tour and is the only player from this district to make the side for this year.

Michael Lawson, who has been a permanent fixture in the side for the past two decades, was unavailable for selection due to his selection in the New Zealand team which played Australia last month.

Players in the national team are ineligible to play for the South Island in the same year they represent their country.

It is understood that Grant Wilson, who was in the side

last year, did not nominate this year.

Bassett was named in the side on Friday afternoon during the final stages of the National Indoor Bowls Championships in Rotorua.

They rounded out on Saturday with the knockout stage of the Fours championship.

Mark Sheard capped off a week of ‘almost’ efforts with another good result with his side of himself, Cecil Tubb and Chris Guy making their way through to the semi-final of the

Masters event before dipping out.

In the open event, Michael Lawson’s side was bundled out of the competition in the last 32.

They were beaten by a Canterbury side featuring former Ashburton player, Jeremy Markham.

His quartet went on to make their way to the final, heading off some strong combinations on the way there.

They were soundly beaten in the final of the event by a strong foursome from Counties.

Aaron Finch scored a sparkling century against Sri Lanka, setting a new record for the highest score by an Aussie captain at a World Cup, going past Ricky Ponting’s unbeaten 140 in the 2003 final against India.

The skipper hit the ball to all parts and scored at a rapid pace, racing to 153 off 132 balls to put the Sri Lankans to the sword.

Steve Smith also showed his class, scoring 73 off 59 as he and Finch put on 173 runs for the second wicket.

But their innings showed up the slow going of David Warner and Usman Khawaja, which could be a problem as Australia go deeper into the tournament.

Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara praised Finch’s knock, especially compared to Warner and Khawaja, who struggled to get away.

“What really impressed me was his mental skills,” Sangakkara said.

“He had Warner at the other end struggling to not get out and not really focusing on getting runs or reversing pressure.

“Finch kept his innings on a perfect, even keel. (He) saw the new ball out, attacked the right bowlers.

“That’s how you get to hundreds – hundreds that matter, hundreds that actually help your side win.”

Warner, who remains Australia’s second-leading runscorer in this World Cup after he was leapfrogged

by Finch, has piled on the runs this tournament but at a slower pace than usual for the aggressive opener.

Australian batting mentor Ricky Ponting said on Friday the “handbrake was off” for Warner after he scored a century against Pakistan.

The left-hander had tallied the two slowest fifties of his career against Afghanistan and India before his ton, and he struggled to get out of first gear against Sri Lanka as he was the first man out for 26 off 48 balls.

While there is no doubt over Warner’s position in the side with 281 runs at 70.25, doubts are growing about Khawaja.

It also depends on the fitness of Johnson, as Thursday’s night’s match against the Raiders was his first NRL outing since a hamstring injury in round seven.

But it would be great to see Marshall in the black and white V once more, and there are three more Kiwis tests after the Tonga match this year.

With 296 NRL games behind him, Marshall offers experience and leadership, an expert kicking game and the flair for the unexpected. He’s certainly good enough to play a role, and it would be a nice way to round out his international career.

It’s hard to believe that Marshall hasn’t played for the Kiwis since October 2012, through a combination of poor form, circumstances and bad luck. Marshall’s ill fat-

ed switch to the Blues took him out of the equation, and by the time he had returned Kearney had definitely moved on.

Marshall’s form hasn’t always been compelling in the intervening years, but he has enjoyed a renaissance over the last 18 months.

He was close to being picked for the touring party to England last year, but pulled out due to a calf injury.

But the fire remains strong.

“The one thing I will never say is no to a Kiwis jumper,” Marshall told the Herald last month.

“I’ll always be available, no matter what. At the same time I’m aware there is a World Cup coming up and a lot of combinations we need to get right and decide who is going to lead us into that World Cup. I don’t expect Madge (Michael Maguire) to pick me… but if he needs me to play, I’ve course I will.”

Sampson off to Eagle Farm NZME Evergreen stayer Sampson confirmed his place in the Gr.3 Tattersall’s Cup (3000m) at Eagle Farm this coming weekend with a fighting run for second in the Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m) on Saturday.

The Howie Matthews-trained nine-year-old never looked like shirking his task as he slugged it out with eventual winner Bergerac for the length of the Ipswich straight after working hard to dispute the pace for the last 800m of the contest.

Matthews was thrilled with the run and the judgment exhibited by rider Mark Du Plessis who was having just his second raceday ride on the horse.

“I said to Mark before he went out that I wanted him to use every ounce of his skill as a world class jockey to give the old boy his best chance at winning the race,” Matthews said.

“We could see from the speed map there wasn’t really a pacemaker in the race so I was keen for him to roll forward if he could.

“In saying that, you often get two or three others that think the same thing so I didn’t want to see him get caught in a war up front.

“He (Sampson) was just a little tardily away so Mark did exactly the right thing by dropping him in and taking cover before asking him to come into the race when he did.

“He won the New Zealand St. Leger (2600m Listed) at Trentham with a similar effort and he nearly pulled it off again on Saturday.”

“He is loving it over here as it is like being at home in the summer,” he said.

“It is normally around 27 degrees and he has blossomed.

“He has certainly paid his way

and there are numerous other opportunities for him that are coming up over the next few weeks.

“He looks an excellent chance in the Tatts Cup this weekend as the 3000m will be perfect for him while there is also the option of the Caloundra Cup (2400m Listed) a week later if he pulled up alright.

“A month later there is the Queensland Cup (3200m Listed) at Eagle Farm again so we are a little spoiled for choice if he can maintain his form and the handicapper treats him well.”

Matthews advised that once Sampson’s current campaign was concluded he would spell him in the warmer Queensland weather before making any future plans.

McLaughlin makes history Kiwi driver Scott McLaughlin ended a 13-year wait to become the first Supercars driver to win the Triple Crown in Darwin yesterday.

The star of DJR Team Penske enjoyed a mistake-free weekend, going on to win both races from pole as well as the top-10 shootout in his Ford Mustang.

No driver had ever completed the treble, which began life in 2006.

McLaughlin also drew level with legend Peter Brock to sit equal-second on the list of career pole positions (57).

McLaughlin, 26, has been in irresistable form this season.

He was flawless again yesterday, crushing the field by 13.8 seconds for his fifth-straight win.

McLaughlin remains strong favourite to win consecutive Supercars championships after clinching his 12th win from 16 races and leads the drivers’ standings by 319 points over team-mate and fellow New Zealander Fabian Coulthard.

McLaughlin was in control from start to finish in Darwin and celebrated yelling “triple crown, yew” over the radio as he crossed the line and etched his name into the history books.

Dave Reynolds driving for Penrite Racing finished second yesterday, while Coulthard rounded out the podium.

Cameron Waters, Jamie Whincup, Chaz Mostert, Lee Holdsworth, Anton de Pasquale, Will Davison and Shane van Gisbergen completed the top 10.

Old girls return and lend a hand

One of Ashburton’s brightest women’s rugby exports was back in town on Saturday, donning the colours of the team that helped her out the last time she was back in New Zealand.

Nicole Purdom had spent the past few months in Ireland playing for Suttonians RFC and working as their rugby community officer, but for now she was back in

New Zealand and again playing for her Christchurch club side, UC. The UC women were meant to play Ashburton Celtic in Christchurch on Saturday, and although the new Ashburton women’s side were forced to default the game, UC were still keen to play.

So they instead made the trip to Ashburton and brought enough players to share some with Celtic,

and a 13-a-side game took to the field featuring familiar faces on both sides of the paddock.

Purdom was among them, and she played the first half for Celtic, but she wasn’t the only former Mid Canterbury girl with UC socks on.

Former Ashburton College student Tayla Ford, and two of the rugby playing triplets who used to attend Mt Hutt College and play for AshHutt – Jamee and Erana Te

Moananui – were also there.

No score was kept, and there was plenty of talk on the field, with the more experienced UC players more than willing to give pointers to the lesser experienced Celts, many of whom were playing in their first season of rugby.

It was a season which had been a big learning curve for them all, and just a couple of weeks ago they managed to pick up their first win of the season, which was

just reward for their efforts as they looked to lay a platform for the future.

The manager of the Celtic women’s side, Stefan Brook, said the girls now had just one game left this season, against Marist Albion in Christchurch this Saturday.

While they struggled for numbers this week, Brook said the team were eager to get to Christchurch and finish their first season on a high.
