Fresh snow draws crowds to Mt Hutt BY LINDA CLARKE

Mt Hutt skifield enjoyed its busiest day of the season on Saturday when over 4000 skiers and riders headed up the mountain to enjoy 67cm of fresh snow. Skifield staff had worked hard to have facilities and the access road clear after the week’s big snowfall. Huge wind drifts blocked upper sections of the access road on Friday and staff were able to clear a path for 4WD vehicles only. Come Saturday, the road looked like a major highway well before sunrise as earlybird skiers and riders headed up early to beat the crowds. Ski area manager James McKenzie
said the combination of fresh snow, school holidays and fine weather saw the mountain reach capacity by 8.25am, at which point the access road was closed to uphill traffic. While some were disappointed they had to wait, shuttle buses were busy ferrying as many people as they could to the new snow. On Facebook, people said it was an epic day, despite the crowds. The skifield stayed open until 5pm. Christchurch skiers said they hit the road before 6am so they could nab early snow and were rewarded with fantastic powder rides. Wind yesterday shut down the Sum-
mit Six and the Triple lifts though other parts of the skifield were open. The skifield has a base of nearly 140cm in places and weather forecasters are predicting more snow at the end of this week, when another cold southerly outbreak is expected. “It’s nowhere near as bad as last week’s storm,” said MetService forecaster Cameron Coutts. “But it will still bring rain and strong southerly winds to much of the country, and snow down to 400 or 500 metres over southern and eastern parts of the South Island. “More good news for skiers and not so good for the rest of us, but it is winter.”
