Mid Canterbury firefighters are on the ground in the Port Hills battling by far the biggest blaze they have ever confronted. Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade members attending a training session at the Woolston station in Christchurch on Wednesday evening quickly found themselves on the Port Hills. Chief fire officer Alan Burgess said the four Ashburton firefighters were dispatched on a Woolston fire truck at about 8.30am and stood down at 3am. The brigade will continue to provide tanker support on the scene. Meanwhile, local brigades and rural fire units are on standby in case reinforcements are required in Christchurch,
LOCAL FLYING INTO FIRES

Burgess said. He’s not seen a fire this big in Canterbury in all his decades with the brigade. “The nearest thing we’ve had here was the fire at Mt Somers years ago, but that didn’t threaten homes like the Christchurch fire,” he said. Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade crews are also assisting with the effort on the Port Hills, chief fire officer Tyrone Burrows said. A tanker and three crew members were deployed to the Christchurch Central Fire Station and spent Wednesday night ferrying water to central city trucks in the battle to save the recently opened adventure park on the Port Hills. They were subbed out for three fresh crew members from the Rakaia station at 6.30am yesterday.

Burrows said the local volunteers would remain on standby for as long as necessary. “It’s (the Port Hills fire) the biggest thing they’ve ever seen,” he said. Alford Forest Rural Fire Force volunteers packed up early yesterday morning to take a tanker to Christchurch, as did the Hinds Volunteer Rural Fire Force. Mayfield Rural Fire Force chief Ian Fielder has stepped up as acting principal rural fire officer in Don Geddes’ absence. Geddes has been involved with co-ordinating the firefighting effort since Tuesday, based at the control centre in Rolleston. Four volunteers from Mayfield were deployed to Christchurch yesterday morning, and a crew from Ashburton Rural Fire Force is set to head off today, Fielder said.
