Ashburton police are reminding parents to talk to their children about stranger danger following an alleged incident on Monday. An 11-year-old reported being approached by a man offering her lollies at the Netherby shops about 4pm. Sergeant Richard Scott said yesterday the girl had done exactly what she should have, not listening to the man and riding away on her bike. Police drove around the immediate area following the incident being reported to them, but found nothing of note. “Police would like to remind parents to talk to their children about stranger
danger, do not speak with unknown persons making unwanted gestures or comments, continue to walk away toward friends or a known trusted adult,” Mr Scott said. “If they are old enough to have a cellphone and operate one, teach them how to call the police,” he added. He also requested for any witnesses to phone police. There was no description of the car, while the man was possibly aged 20 to 30 years, of medium build, wearing a hoodie with the hood over his head. It was unknown whether he was Caucasian, Polynesian or Maori. Meanwhile, the girl’s mother is also warning parents to remind their chil-
dren not to talk to strangers. The Hampstead woman said her daughter had been cycling home from Ashburton Borough School when she stopped by the Netherby shops. Once home her daughter had told her that a man standing by a rubbish bin outside the dairy asked her if she wanted some lollies. The girl replied that if she wanted lollies she already had money at home. Then the man asked her if she wanted to go over to his car to see his dog. “She jumped on her bike and rode off,” Miss Wilson said. “I was pretty freaked out, but it’s good to know that I have taught her stranger danger very well.”
