If a long-running dispute between the Ashburton District Council and neighbours of the West Street art and heritage centre ends up in the High Court, ratepayers could be landed with a $100,000-plus bill.

And that will come on top

of bills of more than $133,000 that have accumulated for legal and other work associated with the council versus neighbours wrangle.

The two parties have been at loggerheads over several issues around the construction of the gallery and later over what the neighbours say is the council’s

failure to honour an agreement on the creation of a residentsonly parking zone outside their properties when public events are held in the complex.

This deal was struck early in the project’s history, but to make it enforceable the council had to rewrite its parking and transportation bylaws.

Council chief executive Andrew Dalziel said the council had incurred ongoing legal costs since the neighbours lodged an appeal to the Environment Court after the council was granted a resource consent to build the gallery and heritage centre.

“Since October, 2010, the

John Lennon’s killer Mark Chapman wants The Beatles legend’s widow Yoko Ono to forgive him for murdering the star. Chapman shot Lennon four times outside his home at the Dakota building in New York in December, 1980, plunging fans of the band into mourning. He was sentenced to 20 years-to-life in prison and has been refused parole on several occasions following pleas from Ono to keep him behind bars, but now it has emerged Chapman is hoping for forgiveness from Lennon’s widow. The decision related to a series of events that took place while Mr Burrell-Smith was employed as a teacher at Ashburton College during 2013, where he formed inappropriate relationships with three students.

Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan told the Guardian yesterday the college welcomed the decisions of the tribunal, including the public naming of Mr Burrell-Smith.

Ashburton College’s principal has welcomed the decision to deny name suppression for a former teacher who committed serious misconduct.

The Guardian revealed yesterday that former Ashburton College teacher Michael Burrell-Smith, 25, was deregistered, censured and ordered to pay more than $3000 in costs after being found to have committed serious misconduct by the New Zealand Teachers’ Disciplinary Tribunal.

The $133,000 excludes the cost of legal work that went into the Transportation and Parking Bylaw review that would have given the council the power to action the resident only parking deal, Mr Dalziel said.

This wasn’t adopted by the council, after councillors heard from many submitters that the designation would set a precedent that could see a flood of requests from other parts of town.

Additional costs will come as the council prepares a revised visitor parking management plan and the $133,000 spent to date excludes legal costs currently being incurred as the council corresponds with the neighbours.

“The cost of moving forward could be $100,000 for a full blown judicial review plus the neighbours have said they would seek costs against the council if they are successful. If they look for some form of injunctive relief, then the cost for the council might be $30,000,” Mr Dalziel said.

Worst case scenario for ratepayers could see costs exceed more than $260,000.

For the neighbours, solicitor Alister Argyle said he did not “see any useful purpose being served by commenting at this stage …” on the likelihood of the dispute with the council ending up in the High Court.

He did, however, say that the group had no intention of disrupting the proposed opening of the complex on February 14.

Spate of burglaries disappoints retailers Yet another Ashburton business was broken into on Monday night, and the store’s manager is not surprised.

Sunny’s Discount Dairy on Alford Forest Road had its front window smashed and a large quantity of merchandise stolen in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The burglary follows a string of similar crimes last week, when three Ashburton businesses were robbed and vandalised.

Police could not confirm last week whether the breakins at ATS, Lizzie’s Dairy and Goods 2 U were linked.

However for Sunny’s Discount Dairy manager Rakesh Bandi, there was no question the crimes were related.

“I knew it was coming because all the shops have been robbed,” he said.

“Something’s been going wrong with this whole area.”

Mr Bandi said the thieves made off with 48 cans of Red Bull, dozens of lighters, and a large quantity of food.

It was not the first time the dairy had been targeted by thieves.

“We’ve had a couple of incidents over the past two years,” Mr Bandi said.

Mr Bandi believed the breakin could have been committed by younger people, as they did not take any cigarettes.

“I think they were having a good time, and they’ve caused a bad time for everyone else,” he said.

“This whole town is full of good people, but some people are doing bad things.”

Society forced to move

The Methven Public Library’s plans for its Main Street land has pushed out long-term tenants the Methven Pottery Society.

Society president Audrey Lowe said yesterday that members had always known they would have to shift from their clubrooms on the library’s land, but had been surprised last week to learn they had only until the end of January left.

“We thought we were there

for a few more months,” Mrs Lowe said.

The society has allowed the library to operate from its rooms since the library was shut down, and later demolished, due to earthquake damage.

The society has operated from its building, behind the library, for about 30 years.

Mrs Lowe said members realised they had a short time to vacate when they went there last week “and all the books were gone”.

The library had shifted most

of its books across the road to the Mount Hutt Roads Board building.

Mrs Lowe said she had since talked to a library representative, who had been away at the time.

The society now wished to quickly sell or give away its building.

Library president Eleanor Marr said the shift had happened quickly when the roads board building became available.

The library had retained some books and a work room

at the pottery society rooms.

The shift was in preparation for rebuilding on the site.

Resource consent had yet to be issued for a new combined library and museum building, which would extend onto the land where the pottery society rooms are.

“It may have come as a shock to them,” Mrs Marr said of pottery society members.

“But they have known for months now that probably at the end of the year they were going to have to close down and move out.”

Eastfield parking to cost come Monday The days of free parking in Ashburton’s central business district are over.

For months shoppers and inner town workers have used the Eastfield Investment Development’s empty lot off Cass Street as a parking space.

Eastfield’s owners and the Ashburton District Council have struck a deal that will see pay and display machines installed in the area with the income shared between the two parking partners.

Environmental Services Manager Rick Catchpowle said the council was aware there could be some resistance to the change.

But he said it was a way of testing the waters and finding out what people were prepared to pay for inner town parking that is planned as part of the new development.

The new machines will be different in appearance to those installed on East Street but the same hourly parking and infringement fees will apply.

The parking activity is allowed for under the District Plan and therefore there are no specific planning requirements to be met under this proposal.

The new parking charges come into effect on Monday.

Longer hours have been provided for at the site and there is a $6 all-day (8am to 6pm) parking option available via the machines.

Additionally, parking permits for people wanting continual long term parking over a number of days on a neighbouring area can be arranged by contacting Skip-2-It Flooring Xtra.

A judge has stopped the children of a Jehovah’s Witness from going to church and attending witness meetings and allowed them to attend birthday parties and Christmas celebrations. The High Court ruling was released publicly yesterday. Justice Brendan Brown said his ruling would “dilute” the two young children’s exposure to their mother’s faith. After the parents separated in 2010, the mother became an “adherent of the Jehovah Witness faith”, the ruling said.

As a dramatic hostage saga unfolded around her, former Ashburton woman Rebecca Davidson could only hope she would not get caught in the crossfire.

From her office in Sydney’s CBD, Ms Davidson had a clear view of the Lindt Chocolate Cafe where three people died during a 16-hour hostage situation which began on Monday.

Ms Davidson, who works for the Goodman Group as an executive assistant to the Australian general manager, said her building was evacuated shortly after 10.30am on Monday, after police locked down much of the CBD. “It was scary not knowing what was going on,” she said.

“Especially when people started talking about bombs and guns, that’s quite worrying.”

Ms Davidson said the café, which was across the road from her office building, was frequented by her colleagues.

“Anybody could have gone there, so it was a bit of a rush to make sure everyone was okay.”

She headed home, calling her parents in Ashburton on the way.

“It wasn’t until I was walking home that I called my parents, and that’s when the build up of emotion and fear that you have inside of you just showed through,” she said.

“It was a bit of a teary message and chat.”

Ms Davidson said, despite the tragedy, she had no plans to leave Sydney.

Teenager ‘lucky to be alive’ - Judge A teenager was told he was lucky to be alive to make his appearance in the Ashburton District Court this week.

Alex Van Eck, 17, appeared before Judge John Strettell to answer charges of drink driving – with an excess blood alcohol reading of 124 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit for a driver under the age of 20 is zero, and 80 millilitres for an adult driver.

He was further charged with careless use of a motor vehicle.

The court was told Van Eck had been drinking “shots” before he lost control of his vehicle after leaving the tar-seal on Winslow Road and driving into a riverbed.

He told police he had been travelling at about 180 kilometres an hour.

Judge Strettell told Van Eck his driving conduct was appalling, both in terms of his drinking and the way he drove on the evening of November 8.

“You are lucky to be here today – on any other day you could have just been another statistic on our road toll,” he said, before disqualifying Van Eck from driving for nine months and fining him $1100 on both matters.

He was also ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Van Eck was also driving unsupervised on a learner licence.

A young man charged with impaired driving, and found with a gram of methamphetamine (P) in his wallet, claimed not to have used the class A drug for days before he was stopped by police for erratic driving.

A member of the public notified police about Harrison Francis Minehan’s driving in the early hours of August 6.

Police then observed the 19-year-old Hinds resident weaving and crossing the centre line at speeds up to 120 kilometres an hour before pulling him over.

A subsequent blood test revealed the presence of methamphetamine and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the main mind-altering component in

cannabis. A point bag (0.25gm) of P was found in Minehan’s wallet.

Defence lawyer Tiffany McRae told the court her client had not used drugs for some time in the lead up to the offending and had not used since, however Judge John Strettell told Minehan the evidence contradicted his story.

“You said you had not had anything that would cause you to drive badly, but someone rang the police which would indicate you had,” Judge Strettell said.

“The testing revelled cannabis and methamphetamine in your blood which was unlikely to have been there if you had not used recently.”

Minehan was sentenced to 100 hours of community work, disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to pay analyst fees of $652.

The following people appeared before Judge John Strettell in the Ashburton District Court this week.

Driving matters Mitimare Daniel, 42, of Allenton, was convicted on his second count of drink driving with an excess breath alcohol level of 587 micrograms per litre of breath (EBA 587mcg/l).

He was disqualified from driving for eight months, fined $950 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Luke Alan Tarbotton, 25, of Tinwald admitted his third count of driving while disqualified – he was sentenced to complete 50 hours of community work and disqualified from driving for 13 months.

Andrew Richard Davis, 47, of Ashburton admitted charges of drink driving (EBA 761mcg) and failing to accompany a police officer. He was convicted, disqualified from driving for nine months, fined $700 and ordered to pay court costs of $260.

Brian Grant Maxwell, 45, of Allenton, was convicted on a

charge of driving while suspended – he was disqualified from driving for six months, fined $300 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Darryl Robert Fraser, 50, of Hinds was convicted and discharged on a count of careless driving causing injury. The court was told Fraser had been driving to Tinwald to seek medical attention for a severely infected knee when he hit a parked car, injuring the driver.

Medical evidence supporting this was supplied.

Catherine Jan Linwood, 21, of Methven, was convicted and discharged on a careless use of a vehicle causing injury charge, as a result of a successful restorative justice outcome and a significant reparation payment to the victim.

Other matters Daniel Thomas Gundry, 40, of Hampstead was convicted on a charge of using threatening language – he was fined $400 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Stephan Alexander Hirst was sentenced to complete 50 hours of community work on a charge of burglary.

David Lesley Byers, 30, of Ashburton was convicted and handed down a nine-month supervision sentence for two counts of shoplifting. He must also make reparations of $100.

Keanu McNair Suddens 20, of Maronan, appeared on charges of breaching community work and supervision sentences. The community work sentence was transmuted to a $700 fine, Suddens was also ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Selina Dawn Griffiths, 43, of Methven, was sentenced to 200 hours of community work and nine months supervision on a charge of cultivating cannabis.

A warrant to arrest was issued for Daniel Joseph Patrick Leahy.

Concert fundraiser a success

Inside the Box members are delighted to have raised about $18,000 in one night.

Spokesperson Don McLeod said the final total from ticket sales for two concerts featuring international opera star Simon O’Neill on Friday night had yet to be tallied.

However, he did say the gross amount raised was about $20,000, with about one or two thousand dollars of expenses to be deducted from that.

“I can’t think of another way we might have made that amount of money in a single night, we are very grateful to Simon O’Neill because he made that happen,” Mr McLeod said.

Mr O’Neill is originally from Ashburton and took time out of his busy opera schedule to per-

form at the concerts, supported by local talent. They were held at the yet-to-be-opened Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre.

Inside the Box is a fundraising campaign being driven by a committee with representatives from the Ashburton museum, art gallery and Ashburton District Council. Its aim is to raise enough money for the new building’s fittings and furniture.

Mr McLeod said about $1.2 million had been raised to date, from a variety of sources including grants, sponsorship and naming rights for rooms in the building.

He estimated there was another approximate $40,000 to be raised, and he hoped the majority of that would be covered by selling naming rights for the remaining two or three spaces.

Battling the lone wolves Stu Oldham

T

he Prime Minister is right: People would be naive to think an attack similar to the Sydney siege could not happen in New Zealand – but that does not mean we should live in fear of organised terror.

John Key is right because his country opposes the rise of violent, murderous fundamentalist groups and because it supports action to bring peace in the countries that they target. That makes New Zealand a target for publicity-hungry groups keen to show other small nations what happens if they stand by the rest of the international community and their principles.

And he is right because New Zealand continues to do so while walking a tightrope between a commitment to domestic and international security and the rights of people it wants to protect. Inevitably, the rights we hold dear butt against the sometimes proscriptive and invasive measures the state believes it needs to keep our country safe.

The Sydney siege was first reported as a suspected terrorist act, but by yesterday it had the look of the actions of an unhinged gunman who lassoed the spectre of organised terror to feed his mania and to associate himself with a cause much more significant – but ultimately just as horrifying – as his trifling self.

Mr Key said the actions of this man, who might have been a lone wolf, showed the effect fundamentalist extremism and its internet-based “outreach” work.

The risk could rise anywhere.

Our security agencies are watching a few dozen people with troubling signs of sympathy with such extreme groups.

Such law has been challenged by we who believe freedoms must be safeguarded, but had the siege happened a week ago, when Parliament considered legislation that allows warrantless surveillance, we may well have paused to wonder how lone wolves will be found if there is no concerted effort to find them.

The Convention Against Torture & Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, provide that no-one may be subject to such treatment.

Early this year the committee accused the Catholic Church of promoting violence against women by teaching that the killing of the innocent unborn is a grave injustice.

Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, Apostolic Nuncio for the Holy See at Geneva early this year,

in addressing the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, rejected the baseless accusations of the committee and stated that the Holy See condemns the torture of anyone, including those tortured and killed before they are born.

Our own government should thus recognise that it is in breach of the convention against torture.

Big things happening in our district

A

s another year comes to an end, it’s an ideal time to look back on what we’ve achieved, what our goals are for 2015 and take stock of where we are heading as a district.

It’s well-known that as a district we’re blessed with strong agricultural and dairy sectors, neither of which are showing any signs of slowing down.

When mayors comment to me that Mid Canterbury is humming, I see this as other regions taking notice of us.

They’re keen to find out what we’re doing for the community and the flow-on effect this is having in attracting new people to the district.

Employment opportunities and lifestyle are the key drivers for people relocating to Ashburton, something which was again reinforced to me through a chance encounter.

On the way back from an official function I was asked by two young men who had just moved to Ashburton where they might be able to find

employment as they had heard Ashburton was the place to get work.

Just as they were walking away, keen to follow up on my suggestions, one stopped and asked why I was wearing a gold necklace. “Oh, that’s the mayoral chains,” I replied, “I’m the mayor.”

I don’t think they were quite expecting that. I always enjoy meeting people from all walks of life and assisting them however I can and promoting this great district.

I’m sure their 2015 is going to be a great one in our district and I wish them all the best.

As we say goodbye to 2014 we remember what an incredible 12 months it has been for the district.

Big development plans have

been unveiled – a $20m supermarket, a $40m Eastfield development in the heart of Ashburton, a multi-million dollar medical facility and the number of building consents issued has been among the highest it has ever been.

There are, of course, several other developments on the drawing board which will only reinforce the district as a progressive and forward-thinking place to be.

Two events I’m really looking forward to in 2015 is the opening of the art gallery and heritage centre on February 14 and the EA Networks Centre – with the opening set to take place once the fit-out and the commissioning period is complete.

These centres will give us two iconic, well utilised and much appreciated, public facilities that will serve the district now and into the future.

The Ashburton Domain is an example of where a community asset was created by people with the foresight of providing

something really special for future generations to enjoy.

This was emphasised recently with the domain’s 150th anniversary where hundreds of people gathered to celebrate and mark the milestone.

The domain is one of Ashburton’s busiest places. It’s a much cherished and valued space that we enjoy and continue to develop so it remains an outstanding and beautiful asset for the next 150 years.

Planning for the future is a big priority for council and 2015 will see council consult on and implement the Long Term Plan 2015-2025.

This document sets out what we plan to do over the next 10 years and it will be the fifth one council has produced.

The long-term plan will be just one of many exciting projects that the district can look forward to in 2015.

As tributes pile up and grief sets in for victims of the Sydney cafe siege, attention is turning to how a lone gunman with an extensive criminal history was free on bail to commit a shocking act of terror.

Sydneysiders are delivering bouquets of flowers to an evergrowing makeshift shrine on Martin Place not far from the Lindt cafe where barrister Katrina Dawson and shop manager Tori Johnson lost their lives in a violent end to a 16-hour siege early yesterday morning.

Grief-stricken families and colleagues have expressed heartbreak at their loss.

“We are so proud of our beautiful boy Tori, gone from this earth but forever in our memories as the most amazing life partner, son and brother we could ever wish for,” the family of 34-year-old Mr Johnson said in a statement.

“We are asking state agencies and federal agencies to look very closely at how this offender slipped through the cracks,” he said.

“Recent unexpected falls in oil prices (are) expected to lower tradable inflation,” the HYEFU economic commentary says.

While nominal wages are forecast to grow faster than inflation at 2.8 per cent a year for the next two years, the forecasts assume a slight fall in average hours worked per week from 33.5 to 33.2 hours while annual labour productivity is forecast to grow by 1.3 per cent annually.

With lower export receipts, especially from dairy products, the domestic consumption and new business investment are expected to be a larger contributor to the growth outlook than previously expected.

Growth in construction activity starts to ease from the 17 per cent growth seen in the year to March this year to 15.3 per cent, 12.2 per cent and 4.5 per cent over the years to March 2015, 2016 and 2017 respectively.

House price inflation is presumed to have peaked in the year to March 2014 and is forecast at 4.5 per cent and 3.9 per cent over the next two years.

The consumers price index is forecast to sit at or about the 2 per cent annual target rate in 2016 and 2017.

Economy ‘can grow faster’ Economic growth is expected to average a historically high annual rate of 2.8 per cent over the next five years, although growth will peak in the year to March 2015 at a slightly lower level than was forecast in the budget in May, the government’s half year economic and fiscal update says.

Lower than expected inflation means the nominal value of economic activity will be lower, reducing forecast government tax revenues and removing the forecast budget surplus for the year to June 2015.

But it also means the annual average potential growth rate while keeping inflation stable has been raised to 2.4 per cent in the current financial year, peaking at 2.9 per cent in mid-2016, before falling back to 2.3 per cent by the end of the forecast period, in 2019.

Forecast growth in the next three March years are 3.5 per cent, 3.4 per cent and 2.8 per cent respectively, before the impact of possible tax cuts that yesterday’s Budget Policy Statement signalled will be in prospect in the election year budget in 2017.

By March 2019, annual economic growth is expected to have fallen back to 2.2 per cent.

Stockton opencast mine could be facing more job cuts as international coal prices recover more slowly than expected.

Rumours have circulated Westport for weeks that Solid Energy will put off more mine workers early next year. It cut 186 jobs at the mine in July.

Solid Energy communications officer Bryn Somerville confirmed yesterday that the international market condition for steel-making coals had remained weaker than expected.

He said this would impact Solid Energy’s export business.

It was assessing how to respond to the change.

“The latest advice is that coal exporters should expect the hard coking coal benchmark to remain flat, at around US$120 a tonne, until 2016/17. We are now working through what that means.”

Mr Somerville confirmed Stockton mine had stopped hiring. It was not fair to take on full-time workers when the future was uncertain, he said.

Calzone handfuls Filling 200g Quality Mark beef mince 2 rashers bacon, finely chopped 1 onion, finely chopped 4T tomato paste 1/2 C tomato purée 1t dried basil 1t dried oregano 2T fresh chives, finely chopped (optional) 1C grated mozzarella 2T grated parmesan (optional) Dough 1 packet active dry yeast 1T sugar 1/2 C lukewarm water 3C high-grade flour 1t salt 1t each dried basil and oregano (optional) ■ Make dough first so it has time to rise. If you have a breadmaker this is even easier. By hand, simply mix yeast, sugar and water. Set aside for around 10–15 minutes for yeast to start working. The liquid should be frothy. Add flour, salt, a few hearty grinds of pepper and herbs if using.

Mix well and add more warm water to flour, stirring with your fingers (or a knife) until dough mixture forms a large ball.

■ Knead dough gently until it has

a lovely sheen and is elastic. Drizzle a little oil over the dough and throughout the bowl to stop it sticking. Cover with a tea towel or cling film and set aside in a warm place to rise for at least 30 minutes.

■ For the filling, fry bacon and onion until bacon is just crispy, then add minced beef and brown well. Add tomato paste, purée, basil, oregano and chives if using and simmer gently for 10–15 minutes. Remove from heat.

■ To make calzone, take a small piece of dough and flatten into a small circle shape with your hands. Spoon a measure of beef and tomato mixture on one side of circle, leaving an edge. Top with a tablespoon of mozzarella (and a sprinkle of parmesan, if desired). Fold the empty side over and pinch edges together.

You should have a half moon shape.

Repeat until finished.

■ Place on a lined baking tray. Brush calzone with olive oil and bake for 10 minutes or until they are golden and crispy.

Whip up a quick, tasty dip

Quick salmon pate 200g cream cheese 200g smoked salmon 2T lemon juice 2T capers 2T dill, roughly chopped Ground pepper, to taste

vegetable sticks, pretzels or the crisp treat of your choice.

Cream cheese and pineapple dip 250g cream cheese, softened 2C crushed pineapple, drained with juice reserved 1t onion soup powder 2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed ■ Combine all and chill before serving.

Chickpea and roasted red pepper hummus

■ In a processor place the cream cheese, salmon, juice, capers, dill and freshly ground pepper.

■ Blitz until well combined. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

■ Serve with crostini or crackers with a squeeze of lime.

400g tin chickpeas, drained 125g roasted red capsicums from a jar 2T lemon juice 1 1/2 T tahini 1 clove garlic, crushed 1/2 t ground cumin 1/2 t cayenne pepper 1/4 t salt

small handful chopped fresh parsley ■ Put chickpeas, red capsicums, lemon juice, tahini, garlic, cumin, cayenne and salt in blender ■ Process, using long pulses, until the mixture is fairly smooth and slightly fluffy.

■ Make sure to scrape the mixture off the sides of the food processor or blender in between pulses.

■ Transfer to a serving bowl and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

■ (The hummus can be made up to 3 days ahead and refrigerated).

■ Return to room temperature before serving.

■ Sprinkle the hummus with the chopped parsley before serving.

Drizzle with olive oil if desired.

Mexican bean dip 2T olive oil 1 large brown onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 t chilli flakes, optional 1t ground cumin 2 cans kidney beans, cannellini beans, bor-

■ Saute onion, garlic and cumin until onion is soft (about 4-5 minutes).

■ Tip onion mixture into a food processor with chilli if using, beans, chipotle sauce and lime/lemon juice.

■ Blitz until well combined. Season to taste with salt and pepper, and more lime juice if needed.

■ To serve, warm dip up in the microwave or stove top ■ Top with a good dollop of yoghurt or sour cream and garnish with coriander and green chilli ■ Serve dip warm with corn chips.

Carrot dip 4 medium-sized carrots 2 cloves garlic 2t ground cumin 1t salt 1t runny honey 1/2 t paprika 1/2 t ground ginger 2T fresh orange juice 1/4 C extra-virgin olive oil ■ Peel and roughly chop carrots.

■ Place in a saucepan of salted water along with the garlic and cook for 15 to 20 minutes until tender.

■ Drain thoroughly and allow to cool.

■ Place the carrots, garlic, cumin, salt, honey, paprika, ginger and orange juice in a food processor

■ Place garlic, parsley, cannellini beans, olive oil, lemon juice, rind and sea salt in a food processor ■ Pulse until well mixed but not completely smooth.

■ Check flavours and adjust with lemon juice or salt to taste.

■ Spoon dip into a bowl ■ Serve with toasted pita wedges,

■ Pulse until smooth.

■ With the processor’s motor running, drizzle in the olive oil. Spoon into a bowl and serve.

Flash Maggi dip 1 pkt Maggi onion soup mix 1 tin Nestle evaporated milk 5T sweet chilli sauce 2T coriander, finely chopped 1/4 garlic clove, finely grated ■ Mix soup and milk and chill ■ Blend in remaining ingredients and chill again.

Salmon and avocado dip 1 ripe avocado 2T finely chopped spring onion 210g can Canadian pink salmon 2T reserved salmon brine 1t Worcestershire sauce 2T lemon juice 1/2 C low-fat sour cream 1/2 C cream cheese Freshly ground pepper Pinch cayenne pepper ■ Halve and destone avocado.

■ Scoop out flesh and place in a bowl.

■ Mash with a fork.

■ Add spring onion and stir to combine.

■ Drain and flake salmon, reserving two tablespoons of brine.

■ Add salmon, Worcestershire sauce, reserved brine and lemon juice.

■ Stir to combine.

■ Beat sour cream and cream cheese together until smooth.

■ Add to avocado mixture.

■ Beat until well combined.

■ Season to taste with freshly ground black pepper and cayenne pepper.

■ Refrigerate until ready to serve.

A rare exhibition

Ashburton painter Margaret Trolove, above left, with art enthusiast Jaz McCully, had her first sole exhibition in about 10 years at the weekend.

The watercolour artist got together a range of her work to display and sell at the threeday exhibition, which opened on Friday, at the Short Street Studio.

Viewing some of her work is Rosemary Morrow, below.

Mrs Trolove farms with husband Graeme on the outskirts of Ashburton and has been a member of the Ashburton Society of Arts since its formation 50 years ago. After recently being awarded life membership of the society, fellow members encouraged her

to hold the exhibition. Aged in her late 80s, Mrs Trolove’s works are inspired by her natural surroundings. Living in her farm’s elegant old homestead, she is surrounded by subjects which lend themselves to capturing, and roses and other flower blooms from both the garden and her floral and still life paintings.

He will be the school’s official artist in residence, alongside professional circus and physical theatre performer Damara Sylvester.

Mr Gilson is a Canterbury University Bachelor of Arts gradu-

ate and a Unitec contemporary dance graduate.

He has been contracted as a performer with New Zealand groups including Dust Palace, Vospertron, Winning Productions, Touch Compass Dance Company, and overseas with Jerome Bel in France, Tino Seghal in Denmark, Opera Australia and The Body Cartography Project in America.

Belle centre of attention The money keeps coming for top southern filly Belle Miraaj, but it hasn’t talked yet.

Part-owner and trainer Gay Robinson has so far fended off several attempts to buy the lightly-tried Group One performer.

“We turned down quite a bit

last season and there’s been more money offered from Australia this time. There’s been a lot of interest - we’ll have to see what happens.”

Belle Miraaj became Robinson’s first Group One starter when she finished third behind Platinum Witness and Darci’s

Dream in last month’s New Zealand 1000 Guineas at Riccarton.

The Iffraaj filly, unbeaten in three juvenile appearances, went into the classic off the back of a previous third in the Listed Ray Coupland Stakes.

“I was absolutely delighted

with her considering she only had one lead-up race,” Robinson said.

Belle Iffraaj was given a three week break after Riccarton and recently returned to her Ascot Park quarters. “She’s had a week’s work and she’s great,” Robinson said.”

Auks making history

By Michael Brown John Irving always thought he was destined to make an impact in football but certainly didn’t imagine it would come from playing for an amateur club side in the relative backwaters of Auckland.

Irving scored the winning goal in a man-of-the-match performance for Auckland City against African club champions ES Setif on Sunday to help them progress to the semi-finals of the Club World Cup where they will play Copa Libertadores champions San Lorenzo tomorrow morning (NZT).

An unlikely victory against

the Argentines would see them progress to the final where they would probably take on European champions Real Madrid, stacked with galaticos of the world game like Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Iker Casillas.

Injury ‘helps India’ Michael Clarke’s hamstring injury has boosted India’s hopes of squaring the Test series in Brisbane. Dhoni will return to captain India in the second Test, which starts at the Gabba today.

Dhoni missed last week’s thrilling first Test in Adelaide due to a thumb injury, with Virat Kohli leading the side in his absence.

While the 33-year-old keeper has been passed fit, Clarke underwent surgery yesterday and will miss the rest of the four-Test series.

Hayne visits Lions Former NRL star Jarryd Hayne has reportedly trained with the Detroit Lions for the second time, increasing speculation he’s set to be offered a deal by the NFL club. Lions coach Jim Caldwell confirmed Hayne visited the Lions last week for two days after holding a private workout in San Diego for several NFL teams. A report in the Detroit Free Press claims Hayne was poised to visit the club again on Monday, although a formal offer for the former Parramatta flyer is yet to be tabled.

Seed Store Foreman

Reporting to the Operations Manager, and leading a small but enthusiastic team you will drive the onsite cleaning, treating, packing and dispatch of both local and international seed. A sound knowledge of seed cleaning machinery both cleaning and treating and the ability to setup accurately, strong leadership, excellent communication are the qualities required for the above position.

To be successful you need to be motivated and willing to work to strict deadlines. An understanding of the seed industry would be an advantage.

Seed Cleaner Assistant

Reporting to the Seed Store Foreman: This position will operate a small Westrup cleaning plant at our Range Street facility.

While employed to operate the cleaning plant, the role will be quite broad with flexibility to adapt a key. Previous experience in the operation of seed cleaning is preferred.

Seed Treater Assistant Reporting to the Store Foreman: This position will operate the latest technology treating machine at our Range Street facility. You will be treating seed for local and export customers. Previous experience is essential in this role along with attention to detail and accuracy with figures. Again flexibility to adapt is a key.

To be successful in the above roles you will need: • A good level of physical fitness as there will be some lifting required.

• A current forklift licence • Good communication skills • Be a team player and willingly participate with others to achieve common goals • Have a good understanding of the local grain and seed industry

Coaching programmes bearing fruit Ashburton tennis is in good heart, with some of the district’s top young players capable of holding their own against Canterbury’s best says Mid Canterbury tennis coach Chris Anderson.

Yesterday the best of the best secondary school students were on court at the Ashburton Ten-

nis Centre, battling for honours in the annual Mid Canterbury secondary schools’ singles tournament. And while the results went the way of the seedings, there were some hard fought battles, particularly in the finals, Ms Anderson said.

The championships were open to students whose home is in

the district regardless of where they attend school.

While Gala Cup champion Ashleigh Leonard won the girls year 11 plus title, she had a tough battle against her opponent Larrissa Allan before winning 6-3, 6-3.

Leonard now plays her competitive tennis in the Christch-

urch premier grade competition.

Tess McCann beat Erin Connelly-Whyte 6-0, 6-1.

In the boys division, Aidan Mitchell had a clean sweep win over Aaron Reid, 6-0, 6-0 in the year 11 plus grade with Flynn Ness beating Bryn Looji 6-2, 6-2 in the year 9 and 10 section.

younger players had lifted significantly in recent years on the back of good coaching programmes, Ms Anderson said, with some of the top players now in Christchurch clinics.

Several of the district’s top younger players will be competing in Christchurch from Sunday in the ASB Christmas Classic.

Foran number one target for cashed-up Warriors

By DaviD Skipwith The Warriors hope Kieran Foran will want to move across the Tasman because the club, as flamboyant club co-owner Eric Watson says, “are about to embark on a period of excellence of hopefully greatness”.

Foran is being chased by a number of clubs, including Canterbury, Parramatta, the Sydney

Roosters, Manly and the Warriors, and has said he wants his future beyond 2015 settled before the new season kicks off. He’s contracted to Manly until the end of the 2015 NRL season.

The Warriors have money to spend having offloaded Feleti Mateo, Jayson Bukuya and Dane Nielsen early from their contracts and have identified Foran as their No 1 target to play

alongside fellow Kiwis playmaker Shaun Johnson.

Watson is hoping that prospect, as well as a stable front office and the coaching talents of Andrew McFadden will tempt the 24-year-old Foran to Mt Smart Stadium.

“In management and coaching I’ve got [new chief executive] Jim Doyle and Andrew McFadden,” Watson said during a visit

to the club’s Mt Smart Stadium headquarters yesterday. “Imagine having Kieran Foran and Shaun Johnson on the field as well.

When asked how negotiations with Foran’s management were progressing, Watson remained tight-lipped. “The Warriors are about to embark on a period of excellence of hopefully greatness. It would be amazing to have Kieran be a part of that.” - NZH
