Ashburton chalked up its 33rd first division Lotto winner in Wednesday night’s draw, when a local punter took home a share of the $1 million first prize. The unidentified player bought their ticket on MyLotto and shared their win with two others, netting a healthy $333,000 for their investment. They shared the win with a Tauranga player with a ticket bought from Papamoa Superette and the lucky Central Otago player who bagged the biggest Powerball win in the South Island’s Lotto history – $22.3 million. This is also the largest prize won this year. It has been a good year for Lotto wins
in the Ashburton District so far, with one player hitting the jackpot in March and winning $1 million. This was followed up with another division one win in June, when the big cash haul was shared between six players, $166,667 each. Statistics provided by Lotto show that Ashburton has sold 33 first division winning tickets and four Powerball first division winning tickets since Lotto began in 1987. The largest of those Powerball tickets was sold in April 2016 and netted its buyer $22.2 million. The ticket was sold at Countdown to an Ashburton couple. They have never been publicly identified. That win eclipsed the $14.4 million
sold in 2014 to a Christchurch couple. When that winner checked his ticket at a Lotto outlet he was excited to find he’d won $14,400. The embarrassed shop owner apologised and said he’d made a mistake. The win was $14.4 million. The man immediately quit his job. Those big wins have, some years, catapulted Ashburton to near the top of the luckiest town ranks – second luckiest in 2014 and third luckiest in 2016. Lotto celebrated its 30th birthday last year and over those years it gave away more than $10 billion in prizes to 450 million winners. The biggest ever prize is the $44 million Powerball prize won by a couple from the Hibiscus Coast in November 2016.
