A Greenstreet resident is worried that after two vehicle accidents on a stretch of road near his property, the next one could be a fatality.

Ali Miller has been appealing to the Ashburton District Council to do something about a lengthy portion of road where the seal has completely come away, leaving an almost completely tar surface that becomes a huge danger to motorists when either icy or wet.

“We’ve had two accidents here recently and both could have been a lot more serious than they were,” Miller said.

“It really is a case of us having had two strikes and potentially the third one could be a case of out, and the worst fear is of course that there are kids involved.”

The most recent accident, which occurred on Sunday, had Miller sprinting from his property which is a few hundred metres off the road after a car lost control on the surface and fishtailed across the road before hitting a fence.

The female driver of the vehicle and her children escaped relatively unharmed.

“They were all pretty white though,” Miller said.

“They were actually lucky that they came to rest on the fence because if they

had gone through it they would have flipped over due to a rise in the paddock which is the bank of a creek that runs almost alongside the road.”

Miller believes that the stretch of road is a serious accident just waiting to happen and that a lot of his neighbours and others from the area are feeling the same. “No-one is worried about the odd fence that might be brought down, but there’s a lot of support out there about just how bad it has become.”

Calling time on TAB agency

For decades popping down to the TAB, placing a bet, watching a race and yarning with your mates has been an important part of the social life of many Ashburtonians.

That will come to an end shortly, when Ashburton’s TAB agency closes. There’ll still be plenty of options available for placing a bet, but face to face with a TAB operator won’t be one of those.

Ashburton agency in the MSA is just one of many agencies around New Zealand that are being closed as technology takes over the betting world, but its closure will be quite a loss for many of the club’s regular punters, manager Simon McDonnell said.

“Cellphones, laptops, computers they’re taking over and face to face betting is going down, but it’ll be a loss particularly for older people.

“The big punters use their computers and phones but we get the people who come in for $5 on a horse or $10 on a rugby game. It’s an outing for some people,” he said.

The MSA took over the TAB agency in 1999. Prior to that it had been a stand-alone branch, originally located on East Street near Kermode Street and later in central Ashburton.

“When we took it over it coincided with our rebuild. Now we’ve still to decide what to do with the space, but again it’s going to coincide with a rebuild.

“It’s been a service, we don’t make any money out of it,” McDonnell said.

While the TAB owns the betting machinery, the MSA employs the three terminal staff and McDonnell hopes they can be re-employed elsewhere in the business.

The decision to close the agency was made by the New Zealand Racing Board.

“Our members are certainly not happy, they’d prefer it was there, but most of them accept it’s going,” McDonnell said.

Punter Colin Dennis is one of those who’s far from happy.

“They’ve taken away teletext, they’re taking bits and pieces away all the time,” he said.

“It’s right before a bend and the bend is just as bad as the straight

“I have been pestering the council about it for a while and I think that my latest conversation might have had a bit of impact.

“But I understand that their hands are tied with such little funding available for roads, the government really needs to step up and make some more money available.

“Or is it going to take someone to die before we get anything done about it?”

Nicky Dickson has been behind the MSA TAB counter for a few years and while she’s watched punter numbers decline, she knows the face to face service will be missed.

“We still get a lot of people in here to place a bet and watch a race, they stay and talk with their mates,” she said.

Rain wreaks further havoc on local roads

The water might have drained away from two massive rain events but there will be a lasting legacy in ruined roads says Ashburton District Council service delivery manager Neil McCann.

He’s warning motorists to remain vigilant when using the district’s roads as pot holes and washouts are widespread across the district.

“We’re working hard to get these fixed but there’s a lot of work to get to and it will take time,” he said.

Contractors were on the job as quickly as possible, the sheer scale of the rain backed up by heavy falls this week meant some of the work already completed had been undone, McCann said.

“This’ll need to be carried out again and on top of this, we are expecting more rainfall which will likely do further damage.

Water is a road’s worst enemy.

It seeps into minute cracks and

erodes the quality of the bitumen.”

Pressure from vehicles using the road then pushed water into cracks and started the deterioration process that ultimately led to pot holes and washouts, he said.

“We have a big list of roads to attend to, but we can’t get to all of it at once. In the interim, I urge all drivers to be cautious and slow down, especially on roads they aren’t familiar with.

“It’s also important to keep a safe distance from vehicles in front of you so you have time to spot potholes and avoid hitting them.”

The council’s contractors were doing the best they could to repair roads and the public’s patience was appreciated, McCann said.

Information sought on arson incidents

Ashburton Police are seeking any information about a spate of arson incidents in the district last week.

Police attended fires in a number of locations in and around Ashburton including the outdoor area of Hampstead Kindergarten on Monday and a garage on Saunders Road on Tuesday.

A tree and fence were also set alight on Thompson Street, Tin-

wald, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police said in a statement yesterday that all fires were being treated as suspicious. “However, it’s too early to say if any of these incidents are related.”

Police said they would like to hear from anyone who may be able to assist with their enquiries in any of the incidents.

Snark: it’s a winner

Ashburton-born author/illustrator David Elliot has used his imaginative prowess to secure first prize at the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults.

At an awards ceremony held in Wellington on Monday night, Elliot nabbed both the Margaret Mahy Book of the Year Award and the Russell Clark Award for Illustration.

His genre-bending book Snark: Being a true history of the expedition that discovered the Snark and the Jabberwock . . . and its tragic aftermath won the hearts of judges with its “clear wit” and “universal appeal to all ages”.

Elliot said the success came as a pleasant surprise, especially given that Snark is a “different kind of book”, with appeal to “certain kinds of kids”.

“It doesn’t really fit into a box,” he said.

“The publisher and I didn’t know how it would go … but we were patient and made the best book we could.”

He said he was pleased and very surprised for Snark to have won

among a “strong field of wonderful children’s books”.

This year’s New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults featured 32 finalists of varying styles and topics.

Elliot’s 220-page tale is described as a tumultuous romp through worlds, and is based around two 19th Century Lewis Carol poems – the Hunting of the Snark and Jabberwocky.

It also features illustrations and additional text by Elliot – the outcome of four years’ work and a research expedition to Oxford where the original poems were based.

Elliot said he was very grateful to Creative New Zealand for providing a grant for his research and to Otago University Press through which the book was published.

Whilst awarding him $15,000 in prize money, judges declared that Elliot’s efforts were an “outstanding contribution to children’s literature in this country.”

“The award is much deserved recognition for his captivating compositions,” said Hon Maggie Barry, Minister for Arts Culture and Heritage.

unique, and offers everything the reader could want – mystery, adventure and intrigue,” judging panel convenor Pam Jones said.

Elliot said he would advise anyone interested in children’s writing to keep up their passion, and remember that success doesn’t happen overnight.

“Take your imagination seriously,” he said.

“We’ve all got an imagination but we don’t always treasure it …

Keep a notebook, turn your ideas into words, or if you’re illustration inclined, pictures. Keep up your enthusiasm.”

The Ashburton Art Gallery, who are custodians to Elliot’s collection of drawings, were also thrilled to hear the news of Elliot’s success.

An exhibition of Elliot’s drawings will be on display at the gallery from September 16, and planning is under way for a Snark exhibition next year.

David will also be in Ashburton for a talk on September 25, but for now it’s back to chipping away on his two upcoming books.

Auctioneer’s hammer for Post building Fastpost will be no longer

When Ashburton’s NZ Post building is sold next month nothing will change for postal and banking users.

Three years down the track, however, when NZ Post’s current lease expires, the 1329 square metre building on the corner of East the Cameron streets could have a new life, potentially as inner town backpacker accommodation says Bayleys sales agent Blair Young.

The building is one of a growing number of NZPost properties that are finding their way onto the market. Ashburton’s however, is unique as in terms of space and function it belongs in NZPost’s past, rather than its future, Young said.

“Ashburton’s building doesn’t fit their model any more. It’s a good old building and someone could convert it into something like a backpackers.”

The on-going divestment of its property portfolio was part of the company’s changing role, one where it no longer needed to be a landlord, he said.

In its hey day NZPost occupied both levels of the building but today occupies less than half the available space for its mail sorting and retail activities.

At the start of the 20th century there were more than 17,000 Post Office branches around New Zealand. It continued to grow as it cemented its place as a government department that provided postal, savings and telephone services.

In 1987 the post office was corporatised and split into Telecom, Post bank and New Zealand Post.

For New Zealand Post, however,

declining letter volumes continue to erode what was once its core business and in response the company continues to reshape its business model.

While it is committed to remaining as a tenant for three years after the Ashburton building is sold next month, a NZ Post spokesperson said it was too early yet to comment on its plans when that three year tenancy was up.

If you’ve relied on New Zealand Post’s Fastpost service to ensure your mail arrives on time, you’ll have to change your thinking come January 1.

From that date the Fastpost service will be scrapped as NZ Post makes changes to its priority mail network.

Currently the service makes up just one per cent of all mail, declining over the past year from making up 23 per cent of the mail service.

The drop-off in demand for Fastpost is part of the continuing overall decline in letter volumes an NZ Post spokesperson said.

Letter post is declining at a rate of 60 million items each year.

Standard post remains unaffected and courier products will be promoted as an alternative way to send priority mail.

For business customers, a new priority mail service will be available in and between Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Wheelie bin deliveries hit a wobble

When the job is more than 20,000 units big, something is always bound to go wrong.

And that’s what’s happened with the Ashburton District Council’s wheelie bin delivery.

The long awaited delivery of red and yellow lidded wheelie bins struck a small hiccough when delivery teams discovered information labels were missing from

the bins delivered to around 600 properties. Those labels would have had collection day or week printed on them.

Bins affected were delivered on Saturday and Monday morning, but council waste recovery manager Craig Goodwin said the missing labels will now be delivered via their mailbox.

“There was a mishap with the printing of the labels, but once identified, the issue was quickly

fixed and bins being delivered from yesterday all have the correct information on them,” he said.

The missing information became clear early in the delivery process, Goodwin said and the problem has now been fixed and bin delivery is back on track.

“I’m encouraging residents whose bins don’t have the collection information on them to check their mail later this month for the updated labels and to stick

them on their bins ready for the new service on 1 September.”

More than 10,000 properties in the district are in the process of receiving their 240 litre yellow recycling bin and 80 litre red rubbish bin.

Residents in the new collection area who don’t currently receive council kerbside collection services will also receive a green 45 litre crate for glass bottles and jars.

“If you already have a green

crate that you’re using for all recycling, you need to keep that for the new service,” Goodwin said.

The green crate will be collected, along with the yellow recycling wheelie bin, on alternate weeks, while the red rubbish bin will be collected weekly.

An information booklet is taped to the top of every red wheelie bin explaining the new service, how it works and what should be put in which bin.

New face at Smallbone Isuzu 5

Pure drinking water not an option

Pump failures and exceptionally heavy rainfalls have created the perfect storm on several of the Ashburton District Council’s water supplies.

Over the past two months the council has been forced to issue boil water notices or restrict water use on the district’s Methven, Mt Somers, Mayfield, Rakaia and Methven-Springburn supplies said assets manager Andrew Guthrie.

Pump failures might be part of normal water supply maintenance but combined with two episodes of heavy rain and users on several supplies had experienced some pretty unusual conditions, he said.

Methven in particular, has had a rough run with residents having to boil water for several days last month after a power failure meant the supply was untreated for a period of time.

This was followed by boil notices issued after high turbidity (cloudiness) in the supply following significant rain events over the past two weeks.

High turbidity lowers the effectiveness of the equipment used to treat water.

The Methven supply had earlier undergone significant upgrading work that inevitably disturbed ground around the gallery and material that had been mobilised had to make its way through the system, Guthrie said.

Council water supplies were regularly tested for the presence of E.coli and high level UV filters are also installed.

This ensures the supplies comply with the National Drinking Water Standards.

“With those measures in place you can put your hand on your heart and say the water will be safe to drink. Following the two rain events it got to the point where we could no longer be sure the UV filter was doing what it was supposed to do and we needed to issue boil water notices.”

Methven’s notice has now lifted as no contamination had been identified, but the supply will be closely monitored.

“The issue for us now is to decide whether the problem was from the exceptional rain events or do we need to do any further upgrade work if it’s identified there is a risk.

“If it’s ongoing then we need to look at upgrading the UV filter,” he said.

Since an outbreak of illness last year that had been linked to the Havelock North water supply, local authorities had been even more risk averse in terms of the integrity of their water supply. Meeting or exceeding national standards was not an option, Guthrie said.

“If we think the levels of service are not satisfactory, if we continue going into periods of boil water notices then clearly we’d have to do some work on the schemes because that’s not the level of service we want to provide.”

The council wanted people to be able to use its water supplies with absolute confidence, he said.

A boil water notice was also issued for Mt Somers and this remains in place.

Police to investigate pastor The West Auckland pastor who posted a sermon clip online calling for gay people to be shot is being investigated by police.

Logan Robertson, pastor of the small independent Westcity Bible Baptist Church, made the comments to his congregation at the end of July.

Speaking to the Herald Robertson agreed his comments were hate speech but did not retract them.

Christian leaders, including the head of the Baptist Union, and the Human Rights Commission have rejected Robertson’s statements.

ray of Auckland City District Police said police were investigating the “very concerning comments about members of our community”.

“Police intend on speaking with the individual and are unable to comment any further until this has been done,” Murray said.

“However we recognise that members of our communities will be concerned and fearful about those comments and we would like to make it very clear that we are treating this matter very seriously.”

On completing his degree, Tim returned to Australia where he held a variety of corporate appointments in marketing, leasing, and ultimately financing all classes of heavy machinery and vehicles during his employment.

A critical position in terms of his new role was a period as a Finance Executive with BFL in Brisbane, specialising in Vehicle, Plant and Equipment finance. Tim returned to New Zealand in 2012 to commence a role with Blackwells Isuzu in Christchurch as Used Truck Sales Manager.

Art gives drama inspiration

Budding stars at the Big Little Theatre Company are sourcing inspiration for their next drama in a unique place – a current exhibition at the Ashburton Art Gallery.

Fifteen FastTrack students aged between 10 and 12 have been tasked with devising an original drama based on Unless by sculpture artist Annabel Menzies-Joyce.

Over 10 weeks they will be working at the gallery to devise, rehearse and plan their drama, which will be performed at an end of the term in a showcase for parents.

Big Little Theatre Company director Jackie Heffernan says the “collaboration across the arts” is something she’d wanted to try for a long time.

“The disciplines of drama and visual arts are actually very connected,” she said “We usually work with text but we want to show that you can do the same with art – that you can read a painting.”

She said Annabel MenziesJoyce and the Ashburton Art Gallery were thrilled to provide their assistance for the project, which was yielding positive results for the visual arts in return.

Bannon in Trump firing line President Donald Trump won’t say whether he plans to keep Steve Bannon, a top adviser and key campaign strategist, in the White House.

“We’ll see what happens with Mr Bannon,” Trump said at an impromptu news conference, when he fielded questions about his confidence in his adviser.

Bannon, the former leader of conservative Breitbart News website, has been a contentious figure in a divided White House for months.

The anti-Bannon campaign comes as Trump is facing heated criticism for not immediately condemning, by name, white supremacists and other hate groups after deadly violence last weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Bannon once described Breitbart as “the platform for the alt-right”.

Speaking to reporters in Trump Tower, the president said Bannon is a friend and “a good man; he is not a racist”.

Kelly has grown weary of the conservative attacks on McMaster and believes that even if Bannon is not personally responsible for them, he has not done enough to quell them.

Monsoon floods death toll continues to rise The death toll in flooding and landslides that devastated parts of northern India, southern Nepal and Bangladesh over the past few days has risen to 245, while millions of others have been displaced, officials say.

In Nepal, authorities scrambled to send relief supplies to flood-hit areas where incessant rain has flooded hundreds of villages, killing 110 people.

Security forces helped rescue people marooned on rooftops,

while helicopters were distributing food and drinking water packets in the worst-hit southern districts.

Across Nepal’s southern border, flooding swamped 13 districts in the Indian state of Bihar. Officials said 41 people had been killed, many from drowning, or after being caught in collapsed houses or under toppled trees.

Australian man, son electrocuted in Thailand An Australian man and his 10-year-old son have been electrocuted while trying to repair a pool pump at their home in Thailand.

The bodies of Andrew Fenwick, 66, and his son Jason were found near the pump in the storage room of the family’s home in the Muang district of Rayong province.

Fenwick was still clutching a spanner in his right hand, while Jason’s left hand was gripping an iron gate The boy had burns on his hand, body and face.

Fenwick’s wife, Somrudi Krailob Fenwick has since shared a heartbreaking tribute to her husband and child.

“We will be together for-

ever! I’ll talk to you everyday, will look at you everyday,” she wrote in a Facebook post.

Deputy investigation inspector Captain Kaweewuth Boonruang said it was believed Fenwick was electrocuted while fixing the pump.

His son suffered the same fate after being struck by an electric current as he ran through a puddle on the floor.

Fenwick was not home at the time and was alerted by neighbours.

Police were called to the house after Fenwick’s distressed youngest son, Justin, four, was found crying by a guard at the housing complex where they lived.

Scribe wanted by police The public is being asked for help in finding Scribe, who is wanted by police for drugs charges and failing to appear in court. Police said the rapper also known as Malo Ioane Luafutu, has “several” warrants for his arrest outstanding.

Scribe has long suffered from drug addiction problems, but declared himself clean in 2011 after selling his many music awards to fund his habits. The 38-yearold posted an emotional message online in March of this year saying he was about to spend another three months in rehab.

Scribe was reported to have turned himself in to police late yesterday.

Our TAB shutting down – a little bit sad Matt Markham

A

little bit of the heart and soul of the Ashburton community looks set to be ripped away later this year.

And while the anti-gambling brigade will be quite happy to hear of the demise of the TAB at the Ashburton MSA, there are many out there in the Ashburton District who may now have to say goodbye to what has been a weekly ritual for many, many years.

With the increase in popularity of online sports and racing betting – the New Zealand Racing Board, which controls TAB outlets across the country, are looking at scaling back their costs and the closure of purpose-built facilities such as the one at the MSA are at the top of their list.

The introduction of self-service machines in many pubs and clubs across the country has also played its part – but there’s just something about seeing those, particularly from our older generation who have known nothing else, down there late on a Saturday morning with formbook in hand, placing all their bets for the day’s action.

It’s just another step in the ever-turning wheel of modernisation of our lives.

Technology is usurping everything. The old-school style of living is fast being weeded out of our lives.

Whether we like it or not.

In order to counter the decision to close the TAB, self-service machines will be even more prominent and the requirements of staff working at the pubs and clubs which hold them will be even more demanding than they have before.

Although user-friendly, the machines are still quite difficult to navigate and also to operate so there will have to be a lot of guidance initially as new faces get used to using them frequently.

But above all else, it’s the community aspect that will be missed more than anything else when they close their doors.

Some of the best conversations come while leaning over a table watching a race and some of the success and hard-luck stories that you’ll hear are second-tonone.

But with no common place from which to share them, that will all change.

And that’s just a little bit sad.

Pastor’s hate speech inciting violence

ou may have read the story about the pastor in West Auckland who’s taken aim at the gay community and Jacinda Ardern as a woman leader.

This is the WestCity Bible Baptist Church and the pastor who delivered the sermon is Logan Robertson.

Let me take you through what he said.

“My view on homo marriage is that the Bible never mentions it so I’m not against them getting married, as long as a bullet goes through their head the moment they kiss. Because that’s what it talks about – not homo marriage but homo death.”

Robertson says he’s just repeating the Bible and when asked if it was a hate speech he said: “Of course it is. If the world thinks it’s hate speech then that’s fine.”

In the past he’s admitted emailing a gay author and telling him he was praying for him to commit suicide.

Robertson is the pastor at the WestCity Bible Baptist Church, an independent church that has no association with the Baptist denomination of New Zealand.

St Matthew-In-the-City in Auckland says his comments are “inciting violence, verging on hate speech and verging on criminal behaviour”.

I would go one step further and say this isn’t verging on hate speech, it IS hate speech.

And if you delve a little further into the sermons of this man,

you’ll realise his horrendous, bigoted views go beyond the gay community.

For example, he’s very opposed to the Labour Party appointing a woman as leader.

In a video he posted on the church’s Facebook page he said: “I don’t let my wife vote. I don’t believe in women voting.

“The Bible actually says that it’s a curse for a nation to have a woman ruling over them.

“Don’t vote for Jacinda. She needs to shut up, go home and get in the kitchen where women

belong and bake a cake for her boyfriend.”

Now, my first thought when I read this was – well, ignore him.

Don’t give him any air-time. He’s an idiot. And I always question whether those who pour such scorn and hatred on the homosexual community are, in fact, questioning or denying their own sexuality. But that’s by-theby I guess.

Some will argue we live in a democracy and this is free speech.

Well, is it? His comments

Peter Smith in Monday’s Guardian writes to support Labour’s proposed tax on irrigation.

In doing so he has repeated some inaccuracies that need challenging.

Poor water quality in NZ is not correlated to irrigation abstraction or use.

It is related to land use and urbanisation. They are not the same.

Irrigation is not to blame.

about Ardern are misogynistic but they fall under the category of free speech.

But his reference to same-sex marriage – that he has no problem with the marriage as such, as long as a bullet goes through their heads the moment they kiss – that is hate speech. That’s inciting violence and that’s a criminal offence.

If his comments haven’t already been referred to police, they should be.

He has an audience, he has followers, and he’s clearly a very angry, troubled man.

of raising with this tax varies, but he seems to be settling on $100m.

Forty per cent of NZ’s irrigation is in the Ashburton District, so in rough terms his tax would raise $40m/year from our district.

This will not be re-spent here.

Our water quality issues, despite the rhetoric from political activists such as Mike Joy, are minor compared to many regions in the NI. None of our rivers or lakes are in the list of severely affected water bodies and we are therefore highly unlikely to receive any recycled money.

It is worth noting none of our water bodies received any prior-

ity from the recently-announced clean-up fund.

There was a report to our zone committee a couple of months ago lamenting the fact that E.coli levels in the Ashburton River are so low that a project to identify the source of those E.coli may have to be cancelled.

It would appear that the Ashburton River may already meet drinking water quality standards!

Our problems are minor and it is our community that should decide our solutions, not politicians from Auckland.

The single largest abstractor from the polluted Waikato River is Auckland city.

We will be taxed to effectively pay for Auckland’s water supply.

I find it hard to believe that will appeal to Ashburton voters!

If Peter is genuine about wanting to tax those who have polluted our waterways then he should advocate for a tax on those who have done that.

The science is very clear that it is not irrigation that is to blame.

Focus on deer shed standards

Just under 40 deer farmers from around Mid Canterbury descended on Aubrey Aitken’s Mayfield property on Tuesday afternoon to find out about making sure their deer sheds meet new compliance standards.

The first of a series of four seminars organised by the Canterbury West Coast branch of the New Zea-

land Deer Farmers’ Association, the meetings were in response to new hygiene requirements for deer sheds when velvet antler is being removed.

After a brief address by National Velveting Standards Body committee member and Fairlie farmer Paddy Boyd on why the requirements have changed, the farmers went inside Aitken’s deer shed so they could have a close up look at

some of the changes they would need to make to their own.

Boyd said the new standards were prompted by a visit from Chinese officials last year who viewed how velvet was harvested, handled and stored in New Zealand.

He said every farmer who harvests velvet must comply with the new regulations if they want to export their velvet.

Although there were hygiene

standards in the past, they were voluntary, he said, but now there were no exceptions.

However the Ministry for Primary Industries, which helped set the new regulations and will ensure they are met in the future, realised it was not possible to get every deer shed in the country compliance before this year’s velveting season, he said.

So farmers have been given 12

months to make sure they are compliant, although they will need to show that they are making steps towards that within the next couple of months.

The new regulations stipulate that velvet can only be removed in a designated clean zone.

All walls, doors, gates, benches and floors within those zones need to have surfaces that allow easy wiping or washing.

NZ’s beef herd continues to grow Beef + Lamb New Zealand says that during the past year, New Zealand’s beef cattle herd increased by 2.8 per cent – to 3.6 million head – while the decline in the sheep flock slowed sharply as sheep numbers recovered in key regions after drought and other challenges.

The annual stock number survey conducted by Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s (B+LNZ) Economic Service highlights the continued growth in beef production, as farmers move towards livestock that are less labour-intensive and currently more profitable.

The largest contributor to the increase in the number of beef cattle was a five per cent lift in weaner cattle numbers, reflecting the high cost of buying older cattle as replacements, and good grass availability. Meanwhile, the size of New Zealand’s beef breeding cow herd did not change, B+LNZ Economic Service Chief Economist Andrew Burtt says.

Mr Burtt said the number of breeding ewes fell in most regions of New Zealand – and by 1.9 per cent overall. The exception was in MarlboroughCanterbury, where there was a small increase (+0.3%) following the prolonged drought.

“Ewe numbers decreased 2.6 per cent to 8.7 million in the North Island, while South Island numbers dropped 1.1 per cent to 9.1 million. The decrease in the North Island reflects residual effects of last year’s facial eczema outbreak.

However, nationwide there has been more emphasis on retaining ewe hoggets, which indicates some rebuilding of the flock is occurring.”

Consequently, the national hogget flock is up on last year. “Hogget numbers increased 1.7 per cent to 8.7 million, largely due to replacement ewe hoggets be-

$60,000 fine for neglect A large dairy corporation and two of its managers have been fined a total of close to $60,000 in relation to what’s been described as the worst case of long-term neglect in the dairy sector in the South Island.

Castlerock Dairies Limited, based in Invercargill, and the managers who ran two farms owned by the body corporate, earlier pleaded guilty to eight charges under the Animal Welfare Act before being sentenced in the Invercargill District Court this week.

The properties were being run by 41-year-old Jared Matthews, who managed 2000 cows over 700 hectares and 44-yearold Dean McMillan, who also managed a farm the same size with the same number of dairy cows.

Both men had overall responsibility for animal welfare on the two properties and the maintenance of farm infrastructure.

Castlerock Dairies Limited has been convicted and fined $37,500 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of more than $11,500.

Matthews and McMillan were both convicted and fined $10,000 each, ordered to pay court costs of $130 each and were both sentenced to 275 hours’ community service.

The Ministry for Primary Industries brought charges against the company and the two managers after being advised in 2015 of serious animal welfare issues at the properties.

The offending involved a serious failure to maintain the lanes used by the cows to get to the milking shed on both properties.

The lanes needed constant maintenance to prevent lameness, but this didn’t happen.

By the time MPI became involved, the lanes had been torn to pieces by constant

use and were, in places, knee-deep in thick mud and excrement. Any maintenance of the lanes was either inadequate or simply not undertaken when required.

MPI manager of compliance investigations, Gary Orr, said the lameness suffered by the animals was catastrophic, with animals presenting such a degree of lameness that they could not be treated and were in significant pain.

“The walk to the milking sheds, because of the mud and the distance from the paddocks to the sheds, would take up to three hours one-way, during which time the lame animals would have been in significant pain.

“The lanes had not been adequately maintained for about two years, which is what contributed to the situation.

“The lack of work on the tracks was known to the defendants. As the animals walked long distances for milking, the lameness got worse. The tracks weren’t repaired to prevent this.”

A total of 193 cows had to be euthanised and 761 required veterinary treatment.

Fourteen vets were required to spend weeks on the property, initially by themselves, then assisting MPI staff.

Orr said a senior attending veterinarian with more than 18 years’ experience described the situation as “disturbing” and the extent of animal welfare issues on the farm as almost beyond comprehension.

He described it as unparalleled and unprecedented in his direct experience.

“It is MPI’s view that the seriousness of the situation should have been immediately obvious to all concerned. The suffering of these animals was fully preventable.”

Fortunately, offending on this scale has been rare in New Zealand.

Despite the small decrease in the number of breeding ewes, the lamb crop is expected to be up 1.1 per cent – to 23.5 million – 0.3 million more than last season.

“This is the result of several factors, including continued improvements in productivity by farmers leading to better ewe lambing percentages, good feed supplies and a lift in the number of ewe hoggets mated.”

Farm sales take winter hit Fewer farms were sold in the three months through July as difficult winter conditions dented activity, although prices lifted due to improved farmer confidence, the Real Estate Institute said.

Across the country, 392 farms were sold in the three months ended July, down from 459 farm sales in the three months to June, and 468 farm sales for the same period a year earlier, REINZ said.

The median price per hectare increased to $27,158 in the latest period, up 4.5 per cent from the three months to June, and up 2.5 per cent from the same period a year earlier.

New Zealand farmer confidence has jumped to record levels this year, buoyed by improved commodity prices, according to the latest Rabobank quarterly survey.

Farmers across all agricultural sectors were more positive about the outlook for the agricultural economy, with 71 per cent citing improved commodity prices as a key reason for increased optimism. This was particularly the case for dairy farmers, 77 per cent of whom cited improved commodity prices, and sheep and beef producers, at 66 per cent. How-

ever, land sales activity appears to have been hampered by particularly dismal winter weather.

The REINZ All Farm Price Index, which adjusts for differences in farm size, location and farming type, increased 5.6 per cent in the three months to July compared with the three months to June.

Invocare, the largest private funeral, cemetery and cremation operator in the Asia Pacific region, lifted its first-half earnings in New Zealand by 21 per cent, assisted by a rising death rate.

Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation increased to $4.8 million in the six months ended June 30, from $4 million a year earlier, the Sydneybased company said in a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange.

Sales rose 7.3 per cent to $23.9 million while expenses advanced 4.2 per cent to $19.2 million, helping the operating margin increase to 20.2 per cent from 17.9 per cent.

Invocare operates 19 funeral home brands across New Zealand, which it counts as its secondlargest market after Australia, and

ahead of operations in Singapore and the US. In the latest period the company benefited from a 5.7 per cent lift in case volumes to 2785 and noted the number of deaths in New Zealand had increased 1.2 per cent on a rolling 12-month basis, ramping up in the last six months.

“Overall performance has been strong with increasing case volumes and market share stable in a competitive market,” the company said.

The company noted that its market share remained stable in New Zealand and that its competitors continued to discount prices in regional areas.

Invocare said it had completed a major upgrade of its Christchurch Academy funeral facility in March, which contributed to its volume

improvement.

Invocare’s parent company in Australia posted a 14 per cent lift in first-half operating earnings after tax, which excludes asset sales, asset impairments, impacts of undelivered prepaid contracts and non-controlling interests, to $A24.5 million.

Its operating ebitda lifted 9.9 per cent to $A51.9 million, which it said reflected increases in the case averages of 5.7 per cent and improved operating cost control, helping the group operating margin increase 180 basis points on the year earlier period.

It will pay an interim dividend of 18.5 Australian cents per share on October 6, up 1.5 cents on the year earlier period.

Its Australian listed shares rose 4.9 per cent to $A14.88.

Fletcher loss sees possible board refresh Fletcher Building chairman Ralph Norris says the board will be refreshed as part of the normal rotation of directors and appointees will be sought with construction experience but he stopped short of accepting responsibility for losses in construction projects and said chief executive Mark Adamson was dumped after an abusive email to staff.

Norris fronted a conference call with interim CEO Francisco Irazusta and chief financial officer Bevan McKenzie. He said a recent internal survey had shown that Adamson was rated “very highly” by his immediate reports and had actually done “a very good job improving the culture of the organisation”.

“The issue with Mark – in frustration he wrote an email that was

not appropriate and that caused some concern in B + I. Mark and I had a discussion and we came to the view this was inappropriate,” Norris said.

Adamson had been considering his future anyway, with his term coming up.

Adamson was dumped last month when the company slashed its forecast for full-year operating earnings to $525 million from the $682 million it reported in 2016. It confirmed the figures today.

Norris was pressed about the board’s performance and said the directors had taken “an exhaustive approach” and that he personally felt more like an executive than a director, given “the amount of time I have spent in this business this year.”

The company didn’t give a forecast for 2018 but said operating cash flows would improve and there would be a rebound in earnings from B + I. Fletcher’s group operating margin fell to 5.6 percent from 7.6 per cent in 2016 while cash flows from operations tumbled 63 percent to $243 million.

It will pay a fully imputed final dividend of 19 cents a share, taking the total for the year to 39 cents, in line with its 2016 payout.

It expects to fully impute its 2018 payments.

Taking together the dividend payments and the drop in Fletcher shares, shareholders got a nil return from 2017.

The shares rose 1.2 per cent to $8.30 yesterday.

The survey of 560 dwellings, undertaken in 2015-16, found 47 per cent of houses had ceiling insulation below 120mm, the level recommended by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority. The report also draws attention to householder heating habits.

Results from the survey have found that while living areas are typically heated at some time in winter, almost half of households did not usually heat bedrooms at all. This included bedrooms occupied by children under 18 years old. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends indoor temperature of at least 18°C in occupied areas of the house or higher for vulnerable groups like young children, elderly or those living with illness. Unheated rooms in winter are unlikely to consistently achieve this WHO recommended

As you would expect from plants with a bit of height, it’s important not to grow each seedling too close together – around 35cm apart is ideal.

If you plant established foxgloves (established plants are plants that have had extra

months growing at the nursery so they fast-forward the pleasure you receive from each plant) you can expect to see them flower in around two months. If you decide to grow foxglove seedlings you can look forward to them flowering in around three to four months.

For a longer flowering season, dead head (ie remove the dead flowers) before the last blooms open.

This will encourage the plants to flower again. It will also stop the flowers going to seed if you don’t want to extend your display of foxglove flowers for next year.

Allenton Croquet Club Club President Ann Sunbeam welcomed Club members.

Almost time for the new Croquet Season. We hope for a better season weather wise than last. The Allenton Sports Club will open on Saturday September 9 and our Croquet Club’s opening day is Monday September 11. Uniform to be worn on both occasions.

One team has been entered in the B Division Assn Flag matches and 2 other members will join a Waireka Club team.

Arrangements are being made for a Club raffle and another film evening fundraiser in November. The usual raffle during the season will again be grocery vouchers.

Recently the Ashburton Combined Friendship Club, along with members from some of the other Ashburton Friendship Clubs, made a successful bus trip to the Mt Hutt Skifield. It was a chance for us to see how the facilities have developed and get an impression of a busy day in the ski season with a big number of people using the field. Here the group is at the Methven ice cream stop on the way home.

Ashburton Combined Friendship Club Members enjoyed a mid-winter lunch at the Bed Rock Café in Allenton in July.

Six new members were inducted at the August meeting. The Christmas Luncheon will be on Tuesday, December 5.

Errol spoke about Passchendaele and the World War One battle fields in France and Belgium which he was privileged to visit on a tour. This a moving and sobering experience and he noted that the local people were very well disposed towards New Zealand.

Errol then related a few anecdotes

for goods donated for our Quizco.

Help will be required to assist with cleaning the facilities and tidying the gardens before the season begins.

Next meeting September 1 at 10am.

Ashburton Club and MSA Golf Selection Our members travelled to the Greendale Golf Club, Sunday August 6 where we met up with the Kaiapoi Club golf section to challenge for the Kai/Ash Trophy.

An aggregate score was taken over the top ten individual cards from each club with our section bringing home the Trophy MSA 348 points Kaiapoi 317 Well done team.

Our main speaker was Kevin Crequer who showed slides and told stories about the three and a half week motorcycle trip he and his wife made from Chicago to Los Angeles along the fabled and historic Route 66.

This 3490km concrete road crosses eight states, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona ending in California. It passes through rural and small town America and was replaced by the Interstate Highway System in the mid80s.

Ashburton Herb Group At the June meeting, Christine gave an interesting talk and showed photos of her recent Passenger Liner Cruise stopping at Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea, both areas still rather primitive and fairly reliant on tourists for their income.

We also had a discussion on finding a larger room in which to hold future meetings.

July meeting was our AGM, where we enjoyed sampling various soups and breads, this being an annual event. After which Marta Levitt gave a colourful talk on the interaction of mind and body happiness mantra told us was an inner state of mind.

For relaxation, concentrating on breathing was very important. Going for a walk amongst trees released negativity.

We each picked a card from her Virtue Pack and found it interesting to discuss the wording of each, and how it related to the holder.

She also told us of the helpful benefits of yoga and chigan for relaxation and good health.

In August we were privileged to have a knowledgeable speaker Robin Burton speak and show excellent photos of Megaherbs of the Sub Antarctic Islands.

These islands are 400kms south of New Zealand, battered by the extreme weather systems of the ‘Furious Fifties’ gale force winds, horizontal rain and low hours of sunshine.

The megaherbs growing on these islands are a botanic wonder of the world. Some growing to over a metre high.

In the spring they erupt in vibrant colours.

Coronation/Phoenix Target Shooting Clubs With the North Island/South Island matches this coming weekend it would appear that some of our girls are hitting form at exactly the right time.

Sandy Bennett with three hundreds tops the field with Lanelle McArthur right up there as well. Nina McKenzie and Michaela are looking strong contenders in the women’s team and Shania Harrison-Lee and Emma Smith are scoring well and must be strong contenders in the junior team.

The men in the open and veteran’s team have room for improvement.

Logan McArthur continues steady improvement and in the newcomers department Colin Taylor and Keith Bonnington are giving notice to the established shooters and Kim Fokkema earned her first 90 badge after only shooting a few weeks.

Mid Canterbury Central Friendship Club

President Roger Lake opened our August meeting with a welcome to one visitor, followed by a moment’s silence in remembrance of Colin Divers, a member who recently passed away.

Don Hopwood reported on last month’s Bus trip which visited the Christchurch CBD, Arts Centre, and new St Andrew’s College chapel.

From there a meal at the Papanui Club followed with a detour through Rolleston on the return journey.

Barry McLaughlin gave us a mini-talk on his life.

His great grandparents were original settlers at Ruapuna and his father ran a transport business in Mid Canterbury before the war forced its closure.

Barry went to Borough School, followed by Ashburton Tech before beginning work as a trainee wool buyer at Woodham’s Woolstore.

At 26 years he took up a sheep and cropping farm at Ruapuna which he farmed for 36 years. During this time he was involved in many community groups, including Mayfield Rugby Club, Jaycees, Lions, Federated Farmers and the Board of ATS. He and his wife have also backpacked widely through South East Asia and China.

Despite health issues nowadays, Barry still keeps active with bowls and an expert interest in computers.

Our main speaker was Jeremy Adamson, commercial manager of Electricity Ashburton.

Using PowerPoint illustrations he covered a wide range of the EA Networks operations.

He emphasised the strong community focus of the co-operative, manifested in heavy investment in under-grounding in Mid Canterbury to remove the road danger of power poles while at the same time beautifying our streets.

Providing fibre-optic cable to all schools in the district has also been a priority.

Milner Jacob thanked our speaker before the meeting was wound up with a reminder we next meet on September 19 at the Seniors Centre on Cameron Street.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club President Bernie Tutty opened the August meeting of the Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club.

After the national anthem had been sung, birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated.

Members were advised of the Annual General Meeting to be held in Wellington, there will be a new constitution.

Val Johnson reminded members of the forthcoming bus trip to Christchurch on September 21, there is also the area luncheon on August 24.

Ann McKay and Betty Arnst told of funny incidents that had happened to them.

After morning tea Judith Rogers spoke to members about the wedding settings with a difference that she had made for her daughter’s wedding.

The bride did not want fresh or artificial flowers for her bouquets, so Judith took jewellery apart and rewired each individual piece to make into three bouquets.

Then she decided to make a centre piece for each table in different colours, as well as adding ”bling” to the bride and bridesmaids’ frocks and the bride’s tiara.

Judith even went to Australia to bring home some jewellery for use in her work.

The invitations and signing table were ‘blinged’.

She explained that she looked up the computer for ideas. The pieces were passed around members, who were amazed at the patience that would be required to make the items.

Cindy Begg thanked Judith for telling us of her unusual and original work with jewellery and beads.

President Bernie closed the meeting with the thought for the month.

Bates stars in Vipers’ win Suzie Bates hit a sensational unbeaten 119 as champions Southern Vipers thumped Loughborough Lightning by 46 runs in Derby to make it two wins from two in defence of their Kia Super League title.

The 29-year-old New Zealand captain hit 15 fours and four sixes as Lightning paid a heavy price for Australian star Ellyse Perry’s dropped catch when she was on 39.

For good measure, Bates took three wickets with her medium pace and held a brilliant catch on the boundary as Lightning were bowled out for 134.

The innings is among the highest in women’s Twenty20 cricket at the highest level.

Australian Meg Lanning’s 126 against Pakistan in 2014 is the highest individual score in international T20s, while the biggest so far in Australia’s Women’s

Big Bash is Sophie Devine’s 103 not out for Strikers Women against Hurricanes Women.

Perry put Bates down off her own bowling, throwing out her right arm in her follow-through as the ball was driven back down the pitch but failing to hold on to the chance.

It was a sharp opportunity but Perry was furious with herself for letting it slip.

And how Bates made Perry and her team-mates suffer as Vipers amassed 180 for 2 from their 20 overs, the biggest total so far in the Kia Super League, which is in its second season.

Bates raced to 53 off just 30 balls as Vipers broke the KSL’s Powerplay record at 63 without loss, Bates launching sixes big enough to clear even the deeper boundary marker in position for the men’s game in the NatWest T20 Blast that followed.

It was not until the 10th over that Lightning made a breakthrough as Hayley Matthews holed out to Elyse Villani at longon and the only other moment of celebration for the home side came when Thea Brookes ran out Georgia Adams with a direct hit from extra cover.

But there was no stopping Bates, who passed Dane van Niekerk’s 91 for Loughborough Lightning last year as the fledgling competition’s highest individual score.

It came during a Perry over which saw Adams caught off a full toss that was ruled a no-ball for height.

Soon after hitting her 15th four, Bates completed her century off 63 deliveries with a push into the offside off Kristen Beams before celebrating with her fourth six.

Lightning’s reply began dis-

astrously as Villani, their key top-order batter, was run out at the non-striker’s end off just the fourth ball as left-arm seamer Tash Farrant deflected a drive by Amy Jones into the stumps.

Villani, who missed Lightning’s opening match with a shoulder injury, was gone for 1 and when Perry was run out for 6 the home side’s position already looked irretrievable at 25 for 3, with only skipper Georgia Elwiss, Derbyshire’s Sarah Glenn and Thea Brookes offering anything of substance in reply.

Beaten in both their opening matches, Lightning - semi-finalists last year - face a tough task to qualify for finals day this year.

To rub salt in their wounds, allrounder Paige Scholfield has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament after breaking a thumb in the defeat

Kieran Foran is back in the Warriors side, after missing last Sunday’s defeat at the hands of the Raiders with a shoulder complaint.

Foran has been named at No6 in the side to face the Rabbitohs on Friday, with Mason Lino moving onto an extended bench.

Veteran prop Jacob Lillyman makes his 250th career appearance but he won’t have his regular front row partner Ben Matulino, with the Kiwi international serving a one-match suspension after taking an early guilty plea on a shoulder charge offence in last Sunday’s 36-16 loss to Canberra.

The 33-year-old Lillyman, who joined the Warriors in 2009 after 62 games for North Queensland, was converted into a front rower in 2011.

Of his 187 appearances for the club so far, 151 have been as a starting prop or as an interchange front rower, more than 130 of them with Matulino in the trenches with him.

On the field for 62 minutes against the Raiders, Lillyman carted the ball up 15 times for 155 metres – the best of any forward in the match – and added 26 tackles. He is now averaging close to 128 metres and 26 tackles across his 20 games this year, superior to his numbers in the previous three seasons.

Lillyman becomes just the 112th 250-game player in the competition’s 109-year history.

Paired up with him on Friday night is Sam Lisone, who’ll be starting for his fourth consecutivegame on end after being used almost exclusively as an interchange prop during his 60-game career.

Matulino’s absence results in a first-grade return for Charlie Gubb, who has come back from a hernia operation.

Last used at NRL level in the 11th-round match against St George Illawarra in Hamilton, Gubb made 128 metres from 15 carries for the club’s 26-16 Intrust Super Premiership win over Wentworthville on Sunday. He’s set for his 38th career outing on Friday night.

Apart from Gubb and Lino, the others named on the eight-man bench are Issac Luke, Chris Satae, Isaiah Papali’i, Charnze NicollKlokstad, James Ball and Toaf Sipley.

After losing four games on end, South Sydney has beaten St George Illawarra 26-24 and Canterbury-Bankstown 28-14 to move to 11th on the table on 20 points, two ahead of the 12thplaced Warriors.

The Warriors’ record against the Rabbitohs is their second best against all current teams in the competition. They have an 18-12 advantage in 30 encounters and 9-6 in 15 away matches at various venues (ANZ Stadium, Sydney Football Stadium, North Sydney Oval and nib Stadium in Perth).

The Super Rugby champions announced the acquisition of Sanders as well as the retention of speedy flanker Pete Samu for their 2018 title defence. Christchurchborn and raised Sanders, 23, is a former New Zealand age group stand out who has played three seasons at NPC level with Canterbury and was a Crusaders wider training group member in 2014. Australian-born Samu has shone since moving from Sydney to Tasman in 2014. He started seven of his 12 appearances for the champions this season, his second with the Crusaders.

Russell Coutts’ plans to stage the America’s Cup event every two years was, according to French sailing great Bruno Trouble “vulgar”.

Parramatta coach Brad Arthur expects Gold Coast’s off-field turbulence will fire up the Titans for their NRL clash at ANZ Stadium, but he won’t have to worry about former Eels hero Jarryd Hayne. Hayne, who is reportedly at odds with coach Neil Henry, has been ruled out of today’s game due to an ankle injury. The Titans board are understood to be considering axing at least one of the pair.

French sailing great Bruno Trouble has slammed Russell Coutts’ running of the America’s Cup saying the Kiwi’s plans to stage the event every two years was “vulgar”.

Trouble, a member of the America’s Cup Hall of Fame, has also heavily criticised the latest America’s Cup regatta won by Team New Zealand in Bermuda but is confident under Grant Dalton’s control, the event will change for the better.

Trouble had a few suggestions of how to fix the America’s Cup and was confident Team New Zealand would make the right calls for the 2021 event.

“It is quite simple,” Trouble said about the next America’s Cup in Auckland.

After a successful season in the Canterbury competition, the Ashburton Barbarians Rugby League Club are hoping to get some new players in to rugby league ahead of the upcoming Aoraki spring competition.

The club will be hosting a muster at the Hampstead Rugby Grounds on Sunday, beginning at 1pm to give people the chance to try out rugby league.

“It will be an introduction for people new to rugby league and for rugby players

it will be something a bit different,” said Barbarians coach Steve Gamble.

“They may come back at the start of next season and join us for the season in the Canterbury competition, or they might come along and then go back to playing rugby next year, we don’t really mind.”

The team will compete in the four team tournament in mid-September, which will consist of two teams from Timaru, the Ashburton Barbarians and the recently formed Chertsey Rugby League Club.

“We are just trying to grow the game as much as we can,” he said.

Skipper Michael Hooper has dismissed concerns the Wallabies lack the match fitness to challenge the world champion All Blacks in Saturday night’s Bledisloe Cup opener in Sydney. Most Wallabies haven’t played in five weeks, with coach Michael Cheika opting to put his squad through brutal training camps in Newcastle and Cessnock since the final round of Super Rugby.

Fiji ‘Drua’ to debut Fiji’s new team in Australia’s National Rugby Championship will be known as the Drua, named after a historic double canoe from the Pacific Island nation.

The Fiji Rugby Union made the announcement yesterday during the team’s official uniform launch in Suva. The Fijian Drua play their first NRC match on September 2 in Brisbane. Other sides in the nineteam NRC competition are from Brisbane, Queensland Country, Canberra, Perth, NSW Country, Melbourne, Sydney and Western Sydney.

Cheika to roll the dice with Beale at 12

Even though Julian Savea is contracted to New Zealand Rugby through to the 2019 World Cup, he has a rare ‘break clause’ in his contract that allows him to leave the Hurricanes franchise if he wishes.

Savea to leave the Canes?

By Liam Napier Julian Savea’s future at the Hurricanes is uncertain.

The Herald understands Savea has a rare ‘break clause’ in his contract that allows him to leave the franchise if he wishes.

Savea is contracted to New Zealand Rugby through to the 2019 World Cup, and therefore a move overseas is not on the table.

Midway through that four-year deal, this is the only year he can exercise his Super Rugby break clause.

It is believed this caveat is tied to some form of commercial arrangement with the national body.

There are no guarantees Savea will leave the Hurricanes. But, equally, at this stage it is no certainty he will stay.

The Hurricanes are in talks to see if Savea wants to remain in the capital.

It is also understood the Chiefs, in the market for a big, strike wing

after James Lowe’s departure and the failed pursuits of Waisake Naholo and Seta Tamanivalu, have registered their interest.

With Savea weighing his options, there is sure to be interest from all New Zealand Super Rugby teams.

This situation arose because from a performance perspective, Savea has not only been dropped from the All Blacks Rugby Championship squad but also sits outside the Hurricanes starting team.

At the business end of last year’s championship campaign and this season’s semi-final run Savea was benched, leaving him with some big decisions to make about his future.

Even with Cory Jane’s exit to Japan the Hurricanes remain stacked with outside backs. Wes Goosen, Nehe Milner-Skudder, Vince Aso and Jordie Barrett have all been preferred. And there will be no promises about that changing should Savea de-

cide to stay. Such a predicament hurts any superstar athlete who has reached the pinnacle of their field.

Savea must now ask himself where his best chance of regaining his All Blacks jersey will come – Wellington, Hamilton or perhaps elsewhere?

Does he take the setback on the chin, focus on the provincial campaign and then target a big offseason? Initial feedback from the Wellington Lions suggests Savea has not dropped his lip but instead turned up with a strong desire to perform and prove he remains a force.

Alternatively, Savea may feel a new challenge and fresh start outside his comfort zone at the Chiefs might be the best way to reinvigorate his career. We’ve seen similar moves work wonders for the likes of Naholo and Malakai Fekitoa, both of whom were let go by the Blues only to flourish at the Highlanders.

In an ideal world Savea, who is

off limits to media, would probably choose to live in Wellington.

His family is based there, and he shares the field with brother Ardie. His wife is also expecting.

But the last two years have not produced his best and something needs to change.

Money is not a major factor.

New Zealand Super Rugby salaries are capped around $195,000 no matter where players are based.

It will purely be about which environment Savea feels he can regain the form which saw him regarded as the world’s premier finisher.

Such are the flexibility of options now ingrained in elite New Zealand Rugby contracts, the ball is firmly in the 27-year-old’s court.

For now the Hurricanes must play the waiting game.

Either way, a decision on Savea’s Super Rugby future is expected within the next three weeks.

SBW fitter and fired up for All Blacks test A fitter and more fired-up Sonny Bill Williams has returned to Sydney with a point to prove for the All Blacks after serving a four-game suspension.

Williams was sent off during New Zealand’s second Test against the British and Irish Lions, having struck the face of Anthony Watson with a shoulder charge.

His comeback from the resultant ban came last weekend,

when he played an hour for a Counties Manukau B outfit.

The divisive code hopper has been included in the All Blacks’ squad for the Bledisloe Cup opener and is expected to be unleashed at ANZ Stadium on Saturday.

The former NRL superstar has put his time on the sidelines to good use, according to All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster.

“He’s certainly raring to go,” Foster said.

“He’s done his four-game suspension. It’s been an awkward time for him, it’s been tough.

“But he’s made sure that he has used that time smartly, he’s trained well and been able to get on top of a couple of niggles.

“He’s back charging around, you’ve got to sort of hold him back a little bit.”

That won’t be the case on the weekend, when Williams is set to tackle the Wallabies.

All Blacks playmaker Beauden Barrett was full of praise for Williams’ attitude during his suspension.

“He’s as positive as ever,” Barrett said.

“Even throughout the Lions series we saw that of Sonny, he got over it pretty quickly.”

Australian rugby, riven by infighting and facing questions over its governance and the leadership of chief executive Bill Pulver, needs the Wallabies to at least get close to the All Blacks in the opening Bledisloe Cup test on Saturday.

A victory would be ideal, clearly, given the state of the game here which is in danger of turning more people into the arms of the everpresent rival football codes.

Coach Michael Cheika deserves plaudits for this week attempting to spread the rugby message in Sydney’s western suburbs, traditionally a league stronghold, by training at the impeccably-kept and intimate Pepper Stadium, the home of the Penrith Panthers, but the best way to bolster the Wallabies’ support base would be a win against their trans-Tasman rivals.

The Wallabies themselves need it too for their own self-belief as much as anything, something touched on yesterday by inside centre Kurtley Beale, a man who returned from Wasps in London in May with a hamstring strain and who hasn’t played since, but one who is likely to start at ANZ Stadium.

“It’s important to win back the fans but it’s more important for ourselves,” he said when asked about the need for a good performance.

“I think as a team if we get the right result at the weekend it will definitely boost the confidence that we need.”

The flip-side to that, of course, is what another heavy defeat at the hands of the All Blacks in the first Rugby Championship test of the season would do for the Wallabies’ confidence.

Last year in this fixture Steve Hansen’s men blew the Wallabies off the park 42-8 and retained the Bledisloe Cup a week later in Wellington with a 29-9 victory before sealing the series with a 37-10 win at Eden Park in October.

None of the Wallabies experienced a Super Rugby victory over a New Zealand team this year, and only the Brumbies featured in the playoffs, and they fell at the first hurdle to the Hurricanes in Canberra.

Another one-sided test on Saturday would open up the very real possibility of a thrashing under the roof in Dunedin next weekend.

Morale among the Western Force players in the squad is already low given the franchise has been axed from Super Rugby. Compounding that with a big defeat would be almost cruel.

It’s with this at stake that Wallabies coach Michael Cheika looks ready to roll the dice and start Beale outside No.10 Bernard Foley.

Beale has trained with the squad over the past four or five weeks but must be considered a risk due to his lack of recent game time; certainly his defensive capabilities in the midfield will be seen as a potential vulnerability by the All Blacks.

“That’s going to be a top field and we’re taking a safer route. He’s got a big season ahead of him and it will probably be his last as he’s still a stallion.”

A dual Group One placegetter, Battle Time does remain in the mix for the Gr.1 Windsor Park Plate at

Hastings on September 23.

“We’ll look for a race somewhere before that and then the main aim will be to go back down south for the Coupland’s Mile,” Carter said.

Roache injured Warriors hooker Nathaniel Roache has been ruled out of the NRL match against South Sydney due to a leg injury. The 21-year-old Roache was hurt during training on Wednesday but the extent of the injury is unclear. He’ll remain in Auckland for further tests, with Issac Luke likely to return to the starting line-up after being demoted to the bench last week.

Thompson Trophy run ends It was a mixed evening for Ashburton College’s two senior basketball sides in their respective competitions, with the girls’ side picking up a win, while the boys saw their run come to an end.

The senior boys’ Thompson Trophy run came to an end with a 94-84 loss to Shirley Boys’ High School.

They were undone in the first quarter 35-12 thanks to some superb shooting from the hosts, who enjoyed strong home support from a vocal crowd.

College coach Pip Johnston said his side didn’t lie down despite the score and showed resilience to claw their way back into the game.

At halftime Shirley led 54-30 and Ashcoll rallied later in the game to trail by only eight.

Fletcher Arnold led the point scoring with 26, supported by Josh Lowe (19) and Fotu Hala (13).

In other quarter-finals on Tuesday night, Cashmere beat Christchurch Boys’ High School, Christ’s College beat Middleton Grange and Rangiora upset Burnside.

AshColl continues to play on a Saturday in Canterbury Basketball’s under-20 competition while training has amped up prior to the secondary schools’ tournament in Dunedin on September 6-9.

The Ashburton College Senior Girls’ basketball team travelled to Cashmere High School for the final round of the Whelan Trophy regular season on Tuesday night.

Cashmere started the match

with some spark, looking to pressure College’s guards into some early turnovers. After weathering the initial pressure and a few early buckets, the College girls came back strongly for a 28-10 first quarter margin.

College guards Sammy Arnold and Liberty Ross were a force on defence, hassling Cashmere’s ball carriers into several turnovers. The result was a number of fast break opportunities for College and a 54-21 halftime lead.

College continued their dominance in the second half, picking up regular steals through continued defensive pressure from guards Hannah Jerao and Roi Makutu.

Forwards Taryn Douglas and Summer Anderson worked efficiently around Cashmere’s zone defence, ensuring the score-

board kept ticking over for College throughout the second half to give them the 91-44 win.

Ashlee Strawbridge led the scoring for College with 22 points, while Liberty Ross and Sophie Adams knocked in 20 and 18 points respectively.

The win secured the College girls’ fifth place in division one of the Whelan trophy competition, which now moves into semi-final and finals action over the next two weeks.

College coach Andrew Shepherd was happy with his team’s performance in the Whelan Trophy competition this year.

“The girls played hard every match, against some very talented and high calibre competition. We’re looking forward to heading to Dunedin for the South Island qualifiers,” he said.

Silver Ferns tipped to miss Games final A senior international netball official is predicting the Silver Ferns will not feature in next year’s Commonwealth Games final.

Lindy Murphy, a long-serving administrator in Australia and the technical delegate for the International Netball Federation, yesterday tipped it will be Australia and England battling it out for gold in the tournament finale.

The pools for the April tournament on the Gold Coast were confirmed earlier yesterday, with the world No.2 ranked New Zealand side and third-ranked English team put in pool B, alongside Malawi, Wales, Scotland and Uganda. Pool A features matches

between top-ranked host nation Australia, Jamaica, South Africa, Barbados, Fiji and Northern Ireland during the preliminary rounds.

Murphy believes the tournament could produce some upsets, predicting England will top pool B, while world number four Jamaica will miss out on the semi-finals altogether.

“I’m going to go out on a limb here and tip an Australia v England gold medal match, and it will either be South Africa or Malawi that play out against New Zealand for the bronze,” said Murphy. England blew a golden opportunity to make the final of

the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, failing to put away a severely depleted Ferns line-up.

Despite three of the New Zealand shooters carrying injuries, the Ferns managed to battle to a one-goal win over England and book their place in the gold medal match. They were comprehensively outplayed by Australia in the final, suffering an 18-goal loss.

Since netball was first introduced to the Commonwealth Games format in 1998, all five finals have been trans-Tasman affairs, fuelling criticism over the competitiveness of the international game.

Murphy has tipped next year’s Games on the Gold Coast will produce some fascinating battles, with new world powers emerging.

“There’s going to be great contests between those teams and some terrific rivalries between the European teams and the African teams. Watch out for that Malawi v Uganda game – that’s going to be exceptional.”

“The reason [Uganda] have qualified for these games is their three fantastic wins over Malawi in the African Championships earlier on in the year, which gave them enough ranking points to qualify.”

Breakers lose game A New Zealand Breakers team missing most of their first-choice players have lost a pre-season game to the touring Wisconsin Badgers in Auckland. The Breakers went down 85-75 to the United States NCAA college team in the first of two games, with the visitors led by 28 points from guard Brevin Pritzl. Warner sits out training Australian vice-captain David Warner is sitting out training yesterday, a day after copping a bouncer in the neck during a trial game. Warner passed a concussion test after being hit by a Josh Hazlewood ball during an intra-squad game in Darwin, as the Test squad prepare to depart for Bangladesh on Friday. Fifita denies Daley clash Andrew Fifita has denied bad blood with NSW coach Laurie Daley after suggestions they clashed over a plan to bench the forward for the State of Origin decider. Fifita has called for Daley to be reappointed for the 2018 series, giving a glowing assessment of their relationship.

“There’s nothing wrong with me and Loz (Daley),” Cronulla player Fifita said yesterday. “He’s one of those blokes, if I had a problem off the field, I’d give him a buzz for some advice. Sport Man U wants Manu One of the world’s biggest football clubs is trying to get Manu Vatuvei on board as a fan. The former Kiwis winger asked his Twitter followers who he should support as he wants to get to know football more, having moved to Manchester last month to play for the Salford Red Devils in Super League. The 20-time England champions replied “You can’t spell Man United without Manu”. Vatuvei replied he’ll have watch a game, as he’s never been to one before.

Celtic and Methven are set to clash in one of the semi-finals in Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier competition.

After a long season on the netball courts, only two weeks remain before a team is crowned champion.

Four teams remain in the hunt, set to battle it out in the semi-finals tonight.

Celtic are the form favourites after finishing the round robin stage undefeated, comfortably beating the other top four sides on their way to the top seed.

Facing off against them are

Methven, who could have avoided playing Celtic, but lost 29-25 to Ashburton College last week in a close match only separated by a five-minute goal scoring blitz from AshColl.

The win sees AshColl facing off against Hampstead, who hit a fine run of form in the tail-end of the season, including a draw against the students.

Hampstead were able to sneak past Methven by one goal, and comfortably accounted for United last week. Ash-

Coll will be half-way through a big week at this point, having played in their Supernet semifinal against St Margaret’s College last night.

No matter the result from the Supernet game, they will be gunning for the victory and it should make for a highly entertaining game of netball.

Playing off for fifth and sixth are United and Southern. Southern were unable to pick up a win in their five pool games, and will be hoping to end the season on

a high note tonight.

United, whose only win in the round robin came against Southern, will be hoping to avoid a loss.

In the premier 2 grade, Rakaia qualified top of the log, and will face off against fourth-placed Celtic B. Like their respective “A” teams, Ashburton College B and Hampstead B will face off in the other semi-final, while Celtic C and Southern B will battle it out for fifth and sixth.

Willis eyes 5000m Nick Willis will be giving the 5000m a crack next year and will try to race the event at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. His goal for the coming off-season is to run 1000 miles in 10 weeks – his previous best is 880 miles. Willis will be channelling some Arthur Lydiard type training.

“I’m hoping I can keep a consistant 100-105 mile week average going until Christmas, and that should lay a really good foundation to have a crack at a successful 5000/1500 double at the Commonwealth Games.”

Blair off to Warriors?

Newcastle coach Nathan Brown concedes that the Warriors are the front runners to lure Kiwi veteran Adam Blair away from Brisbane to end his NRL career. But it doesn’t mean he won’t give up on signing the 31-year-old himself. Blair is contracted with the Broncos until the end of next season, but coach Wayne Bennett has already admitted he won’t stand in the way of the forward and a healthy end-of-career payday.
