Wealthy tourists could soon be pouring valuable tourism dollars into the Ashburton District after a luxury escapes holiday package was launched into the Asian market.

Experience Mid Canterbury chief executive Bruce Moffat is just back from a tourism trade mission to Asia where he unveiled a luxury Mid Canterbury package that would see tourists spending time in some of the district’s most remote and scenic spots.

“This is a combination of the best of the best in terms of accommodation and scenery. It’s really a unique tourism op-

portunity. This is top end tourism and the guests would stay, play and explore the district’s back country by air,” Moffat said.

For the Ashburton District, the luxury package opened up new opportunities at the most lucrative end of the market and the reception at trade shows was extremely positive, he said.

“In Singapore they said we must have this, it can get us into the remote nooks and crannies of alpine New Zealand.”

The package included four accommodation choices – Terrace Downs, Brinkley Village, Lake Heron luxury farm stay or Peel Forest luxury lodge retreat.

Those options gave visitors the choice

of hosted accommodation or villa accommodation, but all involved transport by helicopter from Christchurch Airport, two nights’ accommodation, farm tours and a genuine Kiwi experience. Guests then have the option of a return flight to Christchurch or on to Queenstown.

“With this, we have an opportunity, not only to provide a unique tourism product, but a business product too,” Moffat said.

The top end of the tourist market was after a unique experience and a genuine New Zealand experience and they were prepared to pay to access parts of a country that were inaccessible to many, he said.

Trampers urged to be prepared for weather

Trampers on the Mt Somers walkway this month will be enjoying spectacular views, but they are being reminded to be prepared for snow and wintry conditions.

Walkway society chairman Barry Austin said the track was well-marked but up to 15cm of snow that had fallen in the area recently could make the track hard to follow.

“It would be easy to get off the track in those conditions and you have to be vigilant because it is quite steep in parts.”

Trampers had not been put off by the snowfall, judging by the number of vehicles in walkway carparks, he said, and they would be rewarded with magnificent views.

Fine weather forecast in the next few days could encourage more users.

“A lot of people have been using the walkway with snow on it and as far as I understand no-one has got into difficulty. But people do need to be prepared for any change in the weather.”

Austin echoed a warning

from police this week that people choosing to go tramping or day walking at this time of year needed to plan well.

A woman and two friends were rescued by helicopter off the top of Mount Oxford, North Canterbury, at the weekend after becoming stuck in knee-deep snow.

They couldn’t move forward, the path behind them had turned to ice and they were not sure of their exact location.

They were not properly prepared for the conditions and had very little equipment with them.

Police, who despatched the helicopter crew and a land search and rescue team, said it was a timely reminder to be prepared.

Shorter daylight hours and snow conditions are likely to extend any suggested times for walks, and you need to be prepared with adequate food, clothing and maps.

They urged everyone to follow the five simple rules of outdoor safety: Plan your trip, tell someone, be aware of the weather, know your limits and take sufficient supplies.

Life Education in Mid Canty turns 25

The programme costs over $100,000 a year to deliver and is funded through fundraising and grants. Over the years the classroom, which is towed free of charge to schools by the region’s trucking companies, has been upgraded a couple of times and now features a full digital wall with lessons on a tablet controlled by the educator.

Whiting said the programme’s health messages stuck for life and many former students could remember facts about their body, including that their largest muscle was their gluteus maximus.

She said Life Education enjoyed great community support and all schools bar one in Mid Canterbury scheduled visits.

Harold the giraffe is as well-known as Father Christmas in this neck of the woods.

The long-necked mascot of the Life Education Trust in Mid and South Canterbury has been striking a chord with school children for 25 years, helping them understand how their bodies work.

The trust’s mobile classroom visits 64 schools between the Rakaia and Waitaki rivers annually; educators Jane Hooper and Rudy Keggenhof see more than 8000 young faces in that time.

Tinwald School was the first Mid Canterbury school to host Harold and the classroom in 1991 so it is fitting they will return in September, 25 years on.

Hunt and Hooper were among the first crop of Tinwald students to take part in the programme in 1991 and both said they remembered the fun messages about healthy bodies.

Their own children are at Borough School, which is the only Mid Canterbury school not part of the Harold route.

The trust will be holding a special 25th anniversary dinner on September 2, celebrating the 25year milestone. Trust member Roger Scammell will present some historical highlights, including the horseback ride by Sir Howard Morrison in 1990 that raised nearly a million dollars nationally for the programme.

Scammell said Harold the giraffe was still a figure to be looked up to and was a special reminder that everyone was unique.

Water quality on winter agenda ECan no longer samples water from the Ashburton River at Digby’s Bridge, Hills Road and Boundary Road; water there has historically been considered very poor.

Swimming spots around the region are monitored for water quality from December to March.

Rivers are tested weekly for potentially toxic benthic cyanobacteria.

While cyanobacteria is usually a summer problem, river users should keep vigilant.

ECan says not every river entrance or lake bay is monitored and people need to know what cyanobacteria mats look like so they can avoid them. If the bed of a river is covered in thick dark brown or black mats that have a velvety texture and earthy/musty smell; it is better to be cautious and totally avoid that river site.

People swimming in contaminated water can develop gastro-intestinal illnesses such as salmonellosis, giardia and campylobacter. These pathogens cause diarrhoea and sometimes vomiting associated with tummy bug symptoms.

It might be winter, but Environment Canterbury is looking for feedback on Mid Canterbury people’s favourite freshwater swimming spots.

ECan and Lincoln University are currently carrying out research to better understand where people swim, when they swim there and why they like those places.

An online survey that Mid Canterbury people can access is part of that wider research.

The regional council said it would use the information collected to help develop plans and projects to protect and restore swimming opportunities.

ECan last summer measured water quality at two swimming spots at Lake Hood and one on the Ashburton River at the State Highway One bridge.

The bridge water was graded very poor, with people advised not to swim.

Bayliss Beach at Lake Hood was graded very good and suitable for swimming at all times, while the main swimming beach was graded fair, and regarded as generally satisfactory for swimming.

Environment Canterbury is looking for feedback on Mid Canterbury people’s favourite freshwater swimming spots.

Shuttle’s service praised

St John Ashburton’s Health Shuttle is continuing to provide a high level of care for their clients.

A recent survey conducted by St John shows 98 per cent of clients are more than satisfied with the free service provided.

The survey also showed the shuttle scored highly for both safety and timeliness, with 100 per cent of people responding positively.

The overwhelming majority of comments left on the survey praised the service and the kindness of drivers.

“A very great service and outstanding staff with heart, they are helpful and polite all the time, I feel good to travel with a St John Shuttle,” one responder said.

Between the months of June and July the shuttle travelled a total of 8742km and transported almost 180 people.

While over half of the people who use the service are over 75, anyone can book a seat, including under-fives.

Elaine Vallender, administrator for St John Ashburton, said the service was obviously meeting the needs of people in the community.

The shuttle travels to and from Christchurch every weekday and in the past 12 months only two days have been missed.

All of the 22 drivers are trained first aiders, they also do regular driving tests and courses on how best to meet the needs of clients.

Vallender said the shuttle will also take people to get food or walk around the botanical gardens while they wait.

“The drivers definitely go the extra mile to make sure clients

have a great experience,” she said.

One of the issues driving people to the service was a shortage of GPs in Ashburton, which meant many people had to travel to Christchurch for a doctor’s appointment.

The shuttle is free to all who use it however, they are asked to leave a donation of around $25 to help keep the service running.

Vallender said some people can’t afford to pay and some people leave $50, but the shuttle is run as a service to the community and local groups and businesses also support them.

However the service still costs St John a loss of around $10,000 a year so the organisation is always looking for support.

East Street is closed to traffic for the day, which always coincides with South Canterbury Anniversary Day and this year also falls on the first Monday of the September school holidays.

McDonald said young people always added a good vibe to the day and this year they could attend without missing classes. There will be a special hat-making event for students.

He said there were a few new stallholders from out of town, though the majority of sites would be occupied by Mid

Canterbury retailers and community groups and organisations.

“We are always trying to think of new things to keep people coming back.”

For shoppers there will be bargains along the length of East Street, with plenty of food stalls with tasty offerings.

Demand for low cost housing in the Ashburton District is high, with the full house signs up on the Ashburton District Council’s elderly persons’ housing units.

The council owns and manages 112 single and double units across the district and occupancy has been running at 100 per cent for almost all of this year. Currently there is a waiting list of 13 people for single units and 14 for a double unit. The council charges low rent on the units but this money must cover all maintenance and refurbishment costs. Each year the council surveys occupants of the units to measure their level of satisfaction with their accommodation.

Car burnt out A car left on the side of the road was left gutted after it was set alight. Fire appliances from Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade and Hinds Fire Brigade attended the blaze on the intersection of Westerfield and Barford Roads.

The car had been on the side of the road for a number of days.

Police also attended the scene and are investigating the fire.

Backpack found A black backpack was found on the side of Mill Creek yesterday.

The bag and slightly wet contents have been handed in to Ashburton Police Station. If anyone thinks the bag and items inside may be theirs they should call the Ashburton Police on 307-8400.

Women giving other women a helping hand

Another Ashburton business is making an effort to help women in need.

Curves Gym for Women has been collecting hygiene products to donate to The Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul.

Viv Williams, owner of the gym, said they started last Monday after they saw the plea in the paper.

Since Monday, August 9, they have collected a stack of items, including sanitary products, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, tissues, deodorant and conditioner.

The items have all come from the kind donations of Curves members. Williams said it’s about women helping women.

“It’s something we can do that particularly relates to women, from a women’s gym,” she said.

The items will be donated within the next day or two and although the collection was only a week long, Williams said if the hygiene bank still needs help Curves will start collecting again.

Shot man critical A woman and three children have been left shaken following an armed standoff that ended with a man being rushed to hospital with a critical gunshot wound.

Police were called to a home in Papakura at 6am yesterday following reports a woman had been seriously assaulted by a man with a gun.

While she managed to escape the children, aged four, seven and 13, remained inside the home until midday when police managed to negotiate their release.

They are unharmed and now safe with family. The woman was shaken but did not require medical treatment.

Detective Inspector Dave Lynch, Acting District Commander, Counties Manukau, said specialist police staff had been negotiating closely with the

man thoughout the morning.

At around 1.30pm a shot was heard from inside the address.

When police entered the property they found the man alone with a serious injury.

Lynch said police had not fired any shots during the operation.

The man is in a critical condition at Middlemore Hospital.

Police said the children were known to the man but he was not believed to be their father.

Lynch said police will remain at the scene as officers look to build a fuller picture of the circumstances.

The operation had brought the area to a standstill yesterday.

Sutton Crescent and Rollerson Street were no-go zones as police asked people to stay away.

Several residents on the nearby Sheehan Avenue sat outside their properties watching the incident unfold.

Meningitis warning The parents of a 20-year-old Otago Polytechnic nursing student, who died tragically at the weekend from meningitis, have called on Dunedin residents – particularly students – to be wary of the disease’s symptoms.

Brittany Arthur, of Christchurch, was in her final year at Otago Polytechnic, and died at Dunedin Hospital on Saturday from acute meningococcal meningitis.

It is not known how she contracted the disease.

A family friend said doctors had told the family that people can be a carrier of the disease, some can be affected mildly with flu-like symptoms, and for others it was fatal.

“Brittany was well last Wednesday. She sat her final exam and went out for dinner afterwards.

“Then on Thursday, she woke up in the morning with a headache. During the day she felt like she was coming right, but then it came on again later in the afternoon.

“She went back to bed and just before midnight she got up and collapsed. She was taken into intensive care [at Dunedin Hospital].”

She never regained consciousness.

Parents Jose and Donald Arthur praised staff at Dunedin Hospital for the care their daughter received.

They encouraged Dunedin residents and students to be wary of anyone displaying symptoms of meningitis, including severe headache, fever, cold hands and feet, vomiting, drowsiness, difficult to wake, confusion and irritability, severe muscle pain, pale blotchy skin, spots/rash, and/or a stiff neck.

“The message is, with things like that, you have to take them seriously. Seek help and look out for your friends,” Jose Arthur said.

She described Brittany as a “very compassionate and loving person” who took great pleasure in helping others.

“Following her tragic death, her giving has continued with her organs being used to enhance the well-being of others through Organ Donation New Zealand.

One of New Zealand’s rarest birds landed in the backyard of a local man a few weeks ago and he has just identified what it is.

Roy Parkin works in Christchurch and was at his Ashburton home on Bridge Street for the day when a New Zealand falcon landed on his lawn with its prey.

“As soon as I saw him, I just grabbed my camera and took a shot of him.

“There are between 7000 and 8000 of them left in New Zealand, I’ve become

quite an expert on them over the day,” he said. Parkin said he had a hard time identifying the bird as a falcon because most people he talked to told him it was a hawk.

“I didn’t think it was a hawk; a hawk’s feather markings are different to the falcon’s,” he said.

Parkin said his neighbour owns white pigeons and he thinks this could be the falcon’s prey but, he said it could also be a chicken. “If he’s missing one of his pigeons, this could be the way he finds out where it went,” Parkin said.

Gloriavale mum ‘told what to say’ The mother of a teenage girl who choked to death while shut in an isolation room at Gloriavale Christian Community was pressured by leaders on what to tell investigating authorities, it has been claimed.

Prayer Ready, 14, who had Down syndrome, died after choking on her dinner in June last year. She was in an isolation room where the door handles had been disabled to prevent people getting in and out, according to a coroner, who ruled the death was a tragic accident.

But the daughter of Gloriavale leader Neville Cooper, who walked out of the commune in 2010 with her 10 children after 41 years, says the tragedy has divided the community’s 500-plus members.

Miracle says she knows that people inside Gloriavale, a reclusive Christian community on the South Island’s West Coast, are “very upset” by the circumstances surrounding Prayer’s death.

“I know people who could be on the verge of leaving because they are very upset about it,” she told the Herald yesterday.

Prayer’s mother, Sharon Ready, who was caring for four other children with their father Stephen Ben-Caanan, was there when she died.

They had been placed in the isolation room to stop infection spreading after their baby had been hospitalised with what Gloriavale described as an “infectious and dangerous disease”.

Prayer’s mother told police she thought her daughter was eating the beef schnitzel

too fast and then saw that she was choking.

“I realised she was choking and she was still standing and conscious. I wanted to do the Heimlich. I called out to Stephen who tried doing it but it didn’t work. Stephen then went to go and get some help.”

The adults were unable to get out of the room through the door because parts of the door handles had been purposely dismantled, but Ben-Caanan crawled out of the window.

Coroner Marcus Elliott did not think the fact people could not enter or exit the room through the door contributed to Prayer’s death.

Miracle was shocked by the death. The fact the door handles had been disabled would’ve concerned the leaders and prompted attempts at a cover-up, she believed. “I know the mother would’ve been, or I know she was, told what to say,” Miracle said. “[The leaders] don’t like any spotlight.

They would’ve been co-operative [with police] but they would’ve been careful not to give any information that shouldn’t be given. The mother has been through an awful lot over it. She was there and knew everything that happened. She would’ve been under a lot of pressure to just say what they wanted her to say. That was probably hard for her.

Ashburton College’s Phoenix Chorus put on a show for the Ashburton Musical Club on Sunday for their monthly concert.

The chorus performed three pieces, including their bronze medal winning For the Glory and their gold medal winning Just Haven’t Met You Yet, which picked up the highest overall score at the Australian National Performing Arts Competition.

The Phoenix Ladies, the group of four Year 13 girls who won a gold medal at the competition, also performed at the concert.

The concert was held in the Sinclair Centre with the theme Music in Adversity, and the chorus was asked along because the antonym for adversity is success, and they’d been hugely successful in the Australian competition.

Charge over death A Chinese national has been charged with causing the crash that killed Dunedin photographer Riley Baker. Limin Ma, 41, of Shanghai, was granted a registrar’s adjournment when the matter was called in the Dunedin District Court yesterday. Baker was killed when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a car on State Highway 1, about 400m north of the Shag Point turn-off in East Otago, about 4.30pm on Saturday.

The 26-year-old was taken to Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition, but died yesterday morning. Ma faced one count of dangerous driving causing injury.

Police said the charge was likely to be upgraded.

The water supply causing widespread sickness in the Hawke’s Bay was already under investigation for a previous contamination, it can be revealed.

More than 1000 people have been struck down by the gastric illness, with schools shut and businesses emptied in what’s being labelled the largest such incident in modern New Zealand.

Two people remain in critical condition in hospital due to the outbreak, caused by a campylobacter infection in Havelock North’s drinking supply detected late last week.

The death of an elderly resthome resident has been potentially linked to the contamination.

Bore 3 is less than 200 metres from the bores – “bore 1” and “bore 2” – at the centre of the current incident.

All are on Brookvale Road, north-west of the Havelock North township.

In a press conference yesterday, council officials said they could not yet tell the cause of the latest contamination, although it was likely caused by surface water and linked to a recent rainfall event.

The council stressed the current bore was “somewhat distant” from the other bores and they hadn’t been affected previously.

Testing had shown they were in a slightly different part of the

aquifer, and it wasn’t known if the water was linked, the council said.

It said it would take experts some time to work out the cause of the latest incident, but agricultural and cropping activities were potential sources.

Officials are yet to answer questions on why the previous investigation was ongoing, and whether the discovery of the source of the first contamination may have prevented the current outbreak.

Hastings mayor Lawrence Yule said earlier if the contamination source could not be found and eliminated, the Hastings District Council would have to permanently treat the bore system, or move the source away from the bores to another part of the Heretaunga Plains.

Six people have been injured after the vehicle they were in rolled in Waikato. Northern fire communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said due to the number of injuries suffered by the occupants, St John was required to send five ambulances to the scene.

Phillips says a member of the public raised the alarm after being woken by the crash which happened outside the Pirongia Golf Club on Kakaramea Road at 3.50am yesterday. Emergency services arrived to find the vehicle had rolled and all six occupants injured; one critically, two seriously and three suffering moderate injuries.

A Fire Service spokesman said the building was smoke-logged when four crews entered the premises on State Highway 1 around 1.15am. Teen stabbed A teenager was stabbed in Gisborne on Monday. A 19-yearold man was taken to hospital from a property in Outer Kaiti about 6.55pm. Police said St John Ambulance attended to the victim who had cuts from what appeared to be stab wounds. His injuries were not serious. An investigation was under way.

W

hat’s a skinned knee or two if it means you win a race?

Absolutely nothing it would appear, if the race is part of the Olympic Games and a gold medal is at stake.

When it comes to the world’s premier sporting event, drugs cheats aside, it’s a win-at-allcosts kind of event.

And yesterday a Bahamian athlete proved that if there’s a gold medal at stake then you do what it takes to win, even if that means putting your body on the line – literally.

While others sprinted to the finish, this athlete threw herself across the line, winning by the barest of margins, the tip of an outstretched finger.

That must call into question what crossing the line actually means, when is a winner, actually a winner?

The rules make it clear that athletes are placed in the order that any part of their bodies reaches the vertical plane of the nearer edge of the finish line.

Under normal circumstances that would mean a knee, toe or hand.

The upright dive for the line arrived a few Olympics ago and the body part definition was accepted to include head and shoulders, but in that event, the athlete was upright, feet were at least heading for the line, earthbound or airbound.

Now, body part clearly means any body part, upright or prone.

The era of choice – the prone body part has arrived.

This could easily be taken further and we could see future athletes hurling themselves, airborne at the line in an effort to win.

What the latest version of the dive finish does is raise a raft of questions over race finishes in all codes.

If a jockey is ejected from the saddle but manages to hang on to the reins and his body crosses the line first and ahead of his horse, does that horse win the race? If a rower pitches forward from a boat and crosses the line first, is that a win – or not.

What the latest winning style will do if nothing else, is to create debate, discussion and, hopefully, some questioning of the rules. Does what was written for another time apply in an event when winning is all that matters?

‘Extreme vetting’ urged US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has said that he would enact “extreme vetting” of immigrants.

In a speech in Ohio, the candidate outlined his plans to combat Islamic extremism, including a new screening test for arrivals to the US. Applicants will be tested to determine if they share Western liberal values like LGBT and religious tolerance.

Democratic rival Hillary Clinton poured scorn on his plan, labelling it a “cynical ploy”.

“This so-called ‘policy’ cannot be taken seriously,” said her spokesman.

“How can Trump put this forward with a straight face when he opposes marriage equality and selected as his running mate the man [Mike Pence] who signed an anti-LGBT law in Indiana?”

Under Mr Trump’s plan, citizens from countries with a history of terror will be banned but it is not clear which nations.

In the speech, he did not lay out his own military strategy for defeating the so-called Islamic State.

But he did repeat his claim he was opposed to the Iraq War before it began, which fact-

Billboards ‘too sexy’ Mariah Carey has not put her breast foot forward when it comes to showcasing her latest music tour. TMZ has reported that two major airports in the US state of California have banned Mariah Carey’s new billboards for being “too sexy”.

Carey is returning to Las Vegas later this month to promote her new show on The Super Sweet Fantasy Tour. Reports state she shelled out thousands of dollars for the provocative photoshoot which feature her breasts on billboards at both the Burbank and Orange County airports – which are popular ports for regular Vegas-bound LA commuters.

Woman sentenced to 10 years for kidnapping newborn

When two men claimed to have found a mysterious train filled with Nazi gold last year in Poland, it all seemed too spectacular to be really true.

Scepticism of the alleged finding quickly overtook the initial enthusiasm.

Today, we may finally find out whether the Nazi gold train has indeed been found.

One year after they claimed to have traced it, a team of 35 researchers that includes Piotr Koper and Andreas Richter will start digging for the precious metal.

A report they worked on found that soil anomalies could hint at the train’s existence, but another study by the AGH University of Science and Technology in the Polish city of Krakow found no evidence for that.

The latter study, however, did conclude that a tunnel may be at the location where Koper and Richter will now put their theory to the test.

“The train is not a needle in the haystack – if there is one, we will find it,” Andrzej Gaik, the spokesman of the search committee, said.

The committee consists of volunteers rather than of Polish officials who refrained from participating in the search efforts.

Gaik remains hopeful: “If we find a tunnel, then that is also a success. Maybe the train is hidden inside that tunnel.” - NZME

A South African woman who kidnapped a newborn nearly two decades ago from a hospital and raised the girl as her own was sentenced to 10 years in jail.

Judge John Hlophe told the 52-year-old convicted kidnapper that she had caused “immense” pain to the biological parents whose baby was taken from them, the African News Agency reported.

Publicly, the young woman who was kidnapped as a baby is known as Zephany Nurse, the name given to her by her biological parents and used in the media in the years since her disappearance. After she was found, the girl chose to continue using the name given to her by the kidnapper.

To protect her privacy, a judge ordered that her adopted name and the name of her kidnapper not be used by the media.

Judge Hlophe criticised the kidnapper for sticking to her story that she had bought the baby from a woman who told her that the biological parents did not want the child.

“At the very least, one would expect you to apologise, but you chose not to,”

Still pinching themselves

The family of the convicted kidnapper blew kisses to her as she was led to a holding cell after the sentencing, according to the agency. It also reported a confrontation between the kidnapper’s family and Zephany Nurse’s biological family outside the courthouse.

“She belongs to us,” said Chantall Berry, Zephany Nurse’s aunt. “She has our DNA. Her DNA will never change.”

Zephany Nurse was reunited last year with her biological parents, Morne and Celeste Nurse, after the couple’s second daughter befriended a girl at school who looked remarkably like her. A police investigation and DNA tests showed that the two girls were sisters and that the new friend was the Nurses missing child.

Zephany Nurse’s biological parents were in court for the sentencing Monday, but their daughter was not.

The Dunedin contestants on a renovation reality show returned home on Monday and were “pinching themselves” over their $300,000 auction profit. Roslyn flatmates Emma Diamond (27) and Courtney Mackay (25) came second in the television show The Block New Zealand after an auction in Auckland on Sunday night. Diamond said the pair were still “soaking in” the whirlwind experience. “We are still processing all of this. We keep on giving each other glances and smirking and then looking away. It’s a bit weird,” Diamond said.

“We still have to pinch ourselves,” Mackay said.

‘No, my name is Jeffrey’ A highly touted rapper is changing his name to something that is, quite frankly, ridiculous. Mixtape titan Young Thug, known for crafting woozy, trap-fuelled hip-hop anthems, is changing his name to, “No, My Name Is Jeffrey,” his 300 label boss confirmed. “The reality of the situation is Young Thug is not going to be ‘Young Thug’ anymore. His new name is going to be, ‘No My Name Is Jeffery’. No, My Name is Jeffery. That’s his new name,” CEO Lyon Cohen told Rap Radar. Heartland Bank ups its profit by 12 per cent

BY PAUL MCBETH Heartland Bank boosted annual profit 12 per cent and will pay a bigger dividend, widening margins as low interest rates enabled cheaper funding.

Net profit rose to $54.2 million, or 11 cents per share, in the 12 months ended June 30, from $48.2 million, or 10 cents, a year earlier, the Auckland-based company said in a statement. That met the bank’s guidance for profit of between $51 million to $55 million.

Interest income rose 1.9 per cent to $265.5 million while lending expanded 8.8 per cent to $3.11 billion. Interest expense fell 5.7 per cent to $118.8 million as it scaled back more expensive bank borrowings for cheaper retail deposits.

“The increase in NOI (net operating income) was primarily attributable to the increase in receivables and to a reduction in

the cost of funds,” the bank said.

“Heartland expects underlying asset growth to continue for the 2017 financial year, with increased household, business and rural volumes projected.”

for new acquisitions to accelerate its expansion. It made an unsuccessful bid for Motor Trade Finance and was mooted as a potential bidder for Australia & New Zealand Banking Group’s UDC Finance business.

The lender has been considering a capital return to shareholders, but says volatility in financial markets “creates greater opportunity for acquisitions”.

The board declared a final dividend of 5 cents per share, payable on October 7 with a September 23 record date. That takes the annual payment to 8.5 cents, up from 7.5 cents a year earlier.

The shares rose 2.8 per cent to $1.47, adding to the 8.3 per cent gain so far this year. The stock is rated an average ‘buy’ based on three analyst recommendations compiled by Reuters, with a median price target of $1.34.

Heartland expects 2017 profit to rise to between $57 million and $60 million, excluding the impact of any capital management changes.

The bank’s households division lifted net operating income 12 per cent to $86.1 million as auto lending grew 9.5 per cent, personal

loans including those through the Harmoney platform jumped 55 per cent and reverse mortgages increased 8.2 per cent in New Zealand and 10 per cent in Australia.

The unit’s loan book was $1.69 billion as at June 30.

Heartland’s business banking increased net operating income 5.4 per cent to $43 million with assets of $907 million, and its rural division boosted income 9.6 per cent to $26.3 million on $552 million of loans.

The bank’s impairment expense rose to $13.5 million in the 2016 year from $12.1 million in 2015, largely due to the increase in personal and motor vehicle loans and an increase in the number of auto loan write-offs. It increased its provisioning for potentially bad rural loans to provide a buffer against the dairy sector, with dairy farms accounting for 7 per cent of Heartland’s total loan book.

Merger would hurt consumers – Spark Telco giant Spark says any merger between Sky TV and Vodafone will hurt consumers and only entrench further Sky’s monopoly on sports broadcasting.

Spark has told the Commerce Commission that if it rejected the proposed merger then market pressures on Sky TV would force it to make all sports content available online and on-demand.

Sky TV plans to buy Vodafone New Zealand for $3.44 billion in cash and shares in a reverse takeover which would see Vodafone’s British parent group own 51 per cent of shares.

Vodafone NZ boss Russell Stanners would be chief executive of the company with Sky chief executive John Fellet head of the media and content arm of the merged company.

The company will have nine directors, five from Sky and four from Vodafone.

Spark’s submission to the Commerce Commission says the proposed merger is not in the best interests of New Zealand sport fans.

“Sky has a monopoly on rights for premium ‘national sports’ in New Zealand. Given Kiwis’ love of these sports, they are ‘must have’ rights for media content providers,” said Spark’s GM regulation John Wesley-Smith in a statement released yesterday.

“As it stands right now, there isn’t a proper wholesale market for access to premium sports, and as a result New Zealanders have very few options for how they access that content.

“Sky’s business model seems increasingly focused around sports, which underlines how effective their monopoly is in this space. The proposed merger with Vodafone is likely to entrench that monopoly, and that’s something all New Zealanders should

be concerned about.”

Wesley-Smith said Spark’s concerns were based on the limited, unattractive wholesale options currently offered by Sky. The arrangements for reselling Sky boxes was “outdated”, he said, and doesn’t work for consumers who want more choices in how they watch sports.

He said Spark walked away from an earlier reselling deal with Sky three years ago because it wasn’t commercially viable – “and nothing has really changed since then”.

“We believe if the Commerce Commission blocked the proposed merger, Sky would be forced by commercial realities to make all of its sports content available online and on-demand

– and via wholesale arrangements with lots of parties that help distribute this content to New Zealand consumers.

“By making premium sports content available to more New Zealanders in more ways, through a viable and credible wholesale market, consumers will be better served – and the market will grow for Sky’s content rights. That is not going to happen if the merger goes ahead in its current form without such a wholesale market.

“A merged Sky/Vodafone will be able to leverage its monopoly power in the sports market, to the detriment of consumers. That’s why we’re asking the Commerce Commission to reject the proposed merger in its current form.”

Our bodies crave wholesome foods

I

f your diet is healthy then you stand a much better chance of not falling victim to the myriad of illnesses and diseases that seem to be tied so closely to our modern lifestyle.

Getting it right in the kitchen, however, is not always easy. Time is often the enemy of cooking from scratch, using ingredients you know are free from additives and just as much of an enemy is our own palate. We’ve been conditioned to food that is salty or sweet and that’s what we think we crave.

What our bodies crave, however, is meals that are cooked with fresh, wholesome, chemical-free ingredients. And that’s where the New Zealand Healthy Food Guide magazine is a winner. It’s packed with ideas that keep in the taste at the same time as they take out the not-so-good ingredients.

Herby chicken and chickpeas with asparagus

2t olive oil 400g lean beef steak 2 1/2 C chopped mushrooms 400g can chopped tomatoes 425g can Mexican chilli beans 1 lge bunch fresh kale 2 lge carrots, grated 1 red onion, finely sliced Juice 2 lemons 4 wholemeal wraps 4t lite sour cream ■ Heat oil in large non-stick pan.

■ Add beef and cook three minutes until browned.

■ Add mushrooms, tomatoes and beans.

■ Simmer five minutes until a thick sauce forms.

■ Toss kale, carrot and onion with lemon juice and oil.

■ Set aside to allow kale to soften.

■ Serve beef and beans inside the wraps. Add plenty of slaw and sour cream.

■ Place the bowl over a pan of simmering water.

■ Stir frequently for around 10-15 minutes until it thins, then thickens.

■ Remove from heat.

■ Add salt, mustard, pepper and herbs. Add seasoning.

Apple crumble Healthy hollandaise sauce

Oil spray 6 granny smith apples, peeled and cored 4 wide strips orange zest 1t vanilla paste 1t cinnamon 1/4 C chopped dried figs 1/2 C water 1/4 C sliced almonds 3/4 C quinoa flakes

1T chia seeds 1 1/2 T brown sugar 1/4 t ground ginger 1 1/2 T reduced-fat olive oil spread Greek style yoghurt to serve ■ Preheat oven to 160°C. ■ Lightly spray a one-litre baking dish.

■ Place apples, zest, vanilla, cinnamon and figs in large saucepan with water.

■ Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes with lid on.

■ Remove lid and simmer, stirring occasionally, for five minutes.

■ Spoon apple and fig mixture into baking dish.

■ Place almonds, quinoa flakes, chia seeds, sugar and ginger in medium bowl.

■ Rub olive oil spread in to form large clumps.

■ Sprinkle on apple and figs.

■ Bake 15 minutes until golden.

■ Serve with a dollop of yoghurt.

Midweek Munchies ■ Mix chicken with 1T oil, herbs and half the lemon zest and juice.

■ Leave to marinate for 10 minutes.

■ Heat 1T oil in large pan.

■ Fry onion, garlic and remaining lemon zest and spices for three

Recognition of a life in basketball

Basketball Mid Canterbury stalwart Pauline Paterson was presented with New Zealand Basketball Life Membership on Sunday evening in recognition of her services to the sport.

Paterson became a Life Member in May, but was unable to collect the award after being taken ill during the presentation evening in Wellington.

Sunday’s presentation was organised in secret by Basketball Mid Canterbury with esteemed guests Tall Blacks and Breakers duo Alex Pledger and Shea Ili in tow to congratulate Paterson on another milestone.

Paterson, who is also a life member of Wheelchair Basketball New Zealand, started out as a player at Aranui High School in 1965.

She has since been a coach, referee, manager, treasurer, secretary, tournament administrator, board member and regional co-ordinator to name just some of her previous posts within the game.

Basketball Mid Canterbury president Wayne Rodgers said Paterson remains as passionate about the sport as ever.

“She’s still as on the ball and putting her hand up to do jobs as she probably was 50 years ago when she started,” he said.

“She’s certainly been at the forefront of everything for as long as I’ve been around.”

Bygate signs with Boomers Tall Ferns basketballer Jess Bygate has agreed to a new deal with the Melbourne Boomers WNBL side for the upcoming season.

Bygate spent last season playing for the Adelaide Lightning and also had some time in the local Melbourne league.

“We welcome Jess Bygate to the Melbourne Boomers family after an excellent Big V season with Sunbury and a strong performance at our recent sessions,” said Boomers coach Guy Molloy.

“Jess experienced WNBL play with Ad-

elaide last season and, as a New Zealand international, is used to matching up on bigger, physical players. She will add good defence to our front line,” added Molloy.

Bygate was stoked to confirm her future.

Bolt sparks alert Ashburton’s Lauren Ellis has failed to fire in the elimination race of the sixdiscipline Olympic omnium, dropping to eighth place after three events.

Sitting sixth going into the final event of the first day, Ellis could only add 20 points to her total after she was the eighth rider eliminated.

She now sits on 82 points, with Britain’s Laura Trott setting the pace in first on 118 points after winning the elimination race and the individual pursuit.

Ellis rode her fastest-ever individual pursuit time, staying calm despite trailing Australian Annette Edmondson for two-thirds of the 3000m event.

The Kiwi finished strongly for the win, finishing sixth overall in a personal best three minutes 33.221 seconds to better the 3:34.939 she set in February.

She had earlier finished fifth in the opening scratch race, collecting 32 points.

The 27-year-old New Zealand rider was well placed to contest the final sprint for the line as the 18-strong field finished a lap down on runaway winner Tatsiana Sharakova of Belarus.

Authorities say travellers at New York’s Kennedy Airport cheering and loudly celebrating Usain Bolt’s Olympic 100-metre victory may have prompted ultimately unfounded reports of gunshots there.

The timing of Bolt’s gold medal success roughly corresponded with an anonymous 911 call from a woman reporting gunshots in Terminal 8. Police say more than 20 people subsequently called 911, but authorities determined no shots had been fired.

Sprint king Mark Cavendish could have been forgiven if he’d come out and apologised for his reprehensible act – or at least claimed it was unintentional. He did neither. His interview with the BBC makes his display during the men’s omnium final unforgivable. Cavendish sparked a huge controversy in the men’s omnium points race when he caused a massive high-speed crash that resulted in South Korean rider Sanghoon Park being taken to hospital. Cavendish’s dive down the velodrome was brainless at best.

However the British rider’s biggest sin was refusing to speak about his act or Park’s scary fall in his interview after the race.

Controversial dive It took a dramatic dive by Shaunae Miller of Bahamas at the finish line to win the women’s 400-metre final, preventing American Allyson Felix from capturing a record fifth Olympic gold medal. Miller clocked 49.44 seconds, running in lane 7, to narrowly hold off Felix, who finished in 49.51. Felix now has seven Olympic medals, including three silvers. Gold ‘extra special’ The pressure to add to New Zealand’s medal tally at the Rio Olympics is not weighing on Lydia Ko’s mind.

The world’s No.1-ranked women’s golfer takes to the Marapendi course this morning with her mind focused on performing, but not burdened by the fact she is expected to add to the country’s two gold, six silver medal haul.

“Even though we haven’t had as many gold medals as we would have loved to, I’ve heard

silver medal-wise it’s the most we’ve had in any Olympic Games which is very impressive.

“Hopefully me and all the other athletes who are still to compete could put an addition to that medal count – that’d be great.

“We’re not thinking about all the pressure of the Olympics but just trying to enjoy it.”

The 19-year-old confessed to letting her mind wander about what it would be like to win a medal, especially after seeing

Britain’s men’s gold medallist Justin Rose with his around his neck on Sunday.

“I kept asking my caddie: ‘I wonder what it’s like to stand on that podium.

“I wonder what it’s like to be holding a medal’.”

“If I end up holding the gold medal at the end of Saturday and standing on the podium, I think it’ll be extra special.

“I don’t know if I’d ever be taking that medal off, but it would bruise me a little bit if I was

swinging the clubs with it.”

Ko practised on the course on Sunday after joining the gallery to cheer on team-mates Danny Lee and Ryan Fox, and believed the wind would be a major factor with those with an early tee time expected to get the best of the conditions before the breeze got up.

She is in the last trio to go on the course with Britain’s Charley Hull and Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist at 11.09am this morning.

David Wallechinsky, president of the International Society of Olympic Historians, said that cash-hungry snappers were probably telling the Olympic champs what to do. “It’s become an obsession with the photographers,” says Wallechinsky. “I think they look at it as an iconic shot, as something that you can probably sell. Vaulting to gold Brazilian pole vaulter Thiago Braz Da Silva did the near-impossible on Monday night, upstaging several all-time athletics greats to claim a dramatic gold in the men’s pole vault at the Rio Olympics.

Coming into the Games, Da Silva’s main claim to fame was winning the 2012 junior title. But in difficult, slippery conditions before a stadium less than a quarter full and with the clock ticking towards midnight, he vaulted his way into Brazilian sporting history.

In brief Panthers lose CEO Penrith are searching for their third chief executive in a year after Corey Payne left the NRL club role after just four months in charge.

The Panthers yesterday released a statement saying Payne had resigned and was pursuing an overseas business opportunity. A veteran of 131 games during a 12year playing career with St George Illawarra, Canterbury and Tigers, Payne became the youngest club CEO in NRL history at age 32 and was expected to be groomed as a successor to general manager Phil Gould when signed.

Bronze ‘superb achievement’

Ashburton Karate’s James Smith has returned from the Kenpo Kai world championships with a bronze medal after taking on some of the sport’s finest in the Land of the Rising Sun.

The championships, which were held in the Japanese city of Hamamatsu, involved competitions in both kata performance and full contact randori (fighting).

The 21-year-old was the only New Zealand representative

in the elite men’s section of 18 competitors and lost out to the eventual winner in his semi-final bout.

Smith was accompanied on his Japanese sojourn by senior instructor Sempai Gavin Hunt on what was the club’s first trip

to the championships since 2007.

“It’s a great place and there was lots of friendly people,” said Smith.

“I’m pretty happy with my performance, it was a high level of competition and I enjoyed it.”

Foran not the magic bullet for Warriors By dale Budge Anyone thinking that getting Kieran Foran will solve the Warriors woes is dreaming.

The Kiwis and former Manly and Parramatta five-eighth has spoken to Warriors managing director Jim Doyle about playing for the Auckland club although no formal offer has yet been made.

Aside from battling some rather serious personal issues in recent months – Foran admitted trying to take his own life back in April – the Warriors would need to get him cleared by the NRL to register any potential contract.

He was linked to match fixing accusations though those allegations are very much unsubstantiated at this point.

Even if the Warriors managed to tick off all of that his arrival wouldn’t be a catalyst to make them title contenders anyway.

Sure possessing the entire

Kiwis spine would be a huge coup for the Warriors but it is no use having Lewis Hamilton trying to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix whilst driving a 1990 Nissan Sentra.

The Warriors don’t have the forward pack to match it with the best sides in the competition – they need upgrades there badly.

Individually the Warriors forwards show promise but collectively they don’t have the right balance.

Simon Mannering and Ryan Hoffman are tireless workers and are great at their role but they offer very little on attack.

Ben Matulino carries the ball strongly but needs to get faster play-the-balls to lay a good foundation.

Sam Lisone is brilliant one minute and then crazy the next.

There is no real offloading specialist.

There is no real aggressor -

the enforcer that takes it upon himself to unsettle an opposition pack.

This Warriors roster looks good on paper – we were all duped into thinking the acquisition of Issac Luke and Roger TuivasaSheck last year would turn the Warriors into contenders now.

We were all wrong.

And the addition of Foran will work out the same next season unless that pack is improved.

The roster has been assembled to cover holes.

Two 80 minute defence-focused back-rowers were signed to help a shaky edge defence.

That limits attack – it makes it harder for Shaun Johnson or Foran to pry open a gap if they don’t have much weaponry to play with.

The Warriors have used big, chunky wingers to help get sets going early and make it easier for the forwards to get into their work on tackle three onwards.

But doing that leaves the Warriors vulnerable for those big wingers to be targeted with kicks in behind as the Rabbitohs so effectively managed on Saturday night.

The Warriors don’t have a heap of money to spend under the cap so signing Foran would take up a significant portion of what they have to play with even if he came on a discount.

Foran is a fine player – he is tough, has a terrific work ethic and prior to this season would have been one of the best halves in the NRL. But adding him might be a luxury the Warriors don’t actually need to really spruce up the roster.

Unless Doyle is planning on letting under contract players leave (think Manu Vatuvei) I see no major upside to picking up Foran at this point.

In fact, the risk greatly outweighs the reward.

Tedesco a target Wests Tigers have accused opposing teams of targeting James Tedesco after the star fullback suffered a broken jaw that has all but ended his NRL season. Gold Coast forward Ryan James is contesting a careless high tackle charge over the incident which injured a falling Tedesco after he fielded a bomb on Saturday. For the second time this season Tedesco was on the receiving end of an ugly high shot, after having his nose broken

by Johnathan Thurston in Origin III. Tedesco’s family have slammed the NRL for not doing enough to protect star players.

Broncos up the tempo Brisbane hooker Andrew McCullough says clean and quick use of the ball is vital for the Broncos as they prepare to face three of the NRL’s biggest forward packs before the finals. The Broncos host fourthplaced Canterbury on Thursday night at Suncorp Stadium, before clashes with the Melbourne Storm (away) and Sydney Roosters (home) in a tough schedule to round out the regular season. McCullough believes the Broncos can get through it and generate some prefinals momentum, provided they can increase their ruck speed and iron out the sort of mistakes that have marked their topsy-turvy 2016 campaign so far.

Cup hope returns to action A horse who has overcome more than his share of adversity will open a cup campaign at Avondale today.

Flyinby kicks off a new campaign in the AJC On Facebook Handicap and while expectations are modest over a trip well short of his best, black type targets are in place for later in his preparation.

“He hasn’t had a run since November and he hasn’t had a trial or a jump-out so obviously he will improve,” trainer Leanne Poulson said.

“He’s never won a race at 1400 metres, but he’s well and certainly not showing his age.”

Flyinby has been making up for lost time over the last two seasons after a serious tendon injury as a three-yearold.

“It took three attempts to get him back and that’s why he didn’t race again until he was six,” Poulson said.

Now eight, Flyinby won the Te Awa-

mutu Cup last preparation and also added a middle distance success at Avondale before he was given a break.

“He won the Rating 85 race on Counties Cup day last year when the meeting was run at Avondale,” Poulson said.

“He was balloted out of the Counties Cup so I would like to get him in that this year – that’s the immediate target.

“On the way he’ll have a couple of mile races at Ellerslie as long as the tracks aren’t too heavy, and they shouldn’t be in September, and probably the Te Awamutu Cup again.”

Alyssa Schwerin will ride Flyinby and his stablemate Airman, who looks a genuine winning chance in the AJC Life Members’ 1200 following a close last-start second on the course.

So far, so good Start Wondering is making steady progress for new trainers Evan and J. J. Rayner. The talented six-yearold joined the Wanganui father and daughter’s stable on his return from Australia where he suffered a bleeding attack. “We haven’t made any plans yet – he hasn’t done any fast work, but he looks really well,” Evan Rayner said. “He’s a lovely horse and we’re just hoping things go right for him.”

Northern trip possible Grand National Steeplechase winner Upper Cut could be given the chance to add the north’s major jumping prize to his winter tally.

“We haven’t worked him since he got home from Riccarton, but we will tomorrow and if he’s okay then we will go for the Great Northern,” trainer Mark Oulaghan said. The Awapuni horseman was also pleased with the performance at Tuesday’s trials of the promising Shadows Cast. “We think he’s a pretty good horse.”

In brief Moala on crutches George Moala’s knee injury has made All Blacks coach Steve Hansen’s decision on his midfield against the Wallabies in Sydney on Saturday clearcut – Malakai Fekitoa will almost certainly start alongside Ryan Crotty. The details about Moala’s injury have yet to come out, but he was pictured on crutches yesterday. The Blues midfielder, who had a superb test against Wales in Dunedin in June would have pushed Highlanders centre Fekitoa close for a starting spot at ANZ Stadium, but it now appears Hansen’s decision has been made for him.

Aussies defending ‘fortress’ The Wallabies say the All Blacks are under all the pressure for Saturday’s Bledisloe Cup match as they seek to keep the world champions winless in fortress Sydney for a third straight year.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen declared the Wallabies have “problems” after arriving in Sydney on Sunday, which riled the Australians.

“From what it sounds like coming out of their camp, there’s no point us turning up,” Wallabies vice-captain Rob Horne said.

But Horne declared that the world champions will be weighed down by expectation.

“All the pressure is on them, they have to – they’re supposed to – win,” Horne said.

Even more so considering their record at ANZ Stadium is the worst of any major ground in the world over the past 15 years, with just seven wins, seven losses and a draw for a winning ratio of 47 per cent.

In that same period since 1999, the All Blacks’ overall winning record is 85 per cent.

While the Kiwis have held the Bledisloe for 13 straight years and have won back-to-back World Cups, they haven’t won in Sydney since 2013, with a loss and a draw in their most recent visits.

The Wallabies also took umbrage at Hansen’s remarks that their players lacked recent biggame experience after their sides failed to make the semi-finals.

“He’s probably saying that because he keeps wanting to rub it in that we’re not good enough, because we’re not playing finals,” Wallabies coach Michael Cheika said.

“They’re off the back of a big season, we understand where we sit in the picture and the perception for them, I understand that.

“We just need to be worthy to be able to play in our own jersey and play the best we possibly can for Australia on Saturday night.”

Cheika and Hansen have lobbed verbal grenades at each other in the past two days as preparations for the Bledisloe heats up.

This will be the first time since New Zealand defeated Australia

in the World Cup final last year that the two teams have collided.

After that victory, Cheika beat Hansen for World Rugby’s coach of the year award.

“I don’t know why he’s upset or what he’s upset about, that’s up to him,” Cheika said.

“For us, we know how we’re thought of; they think we’re no chance to do anything.

“Our problem is that we’ve got nothing and we’re going up against the world No.1, that’s what they really think.”

Cheika is certainly creating a siege mentality around his squad as they attempt to end one of the longest losing streaks in sport.

The Wallabies last held the Bledisloe Cup in 2002.

Brad Thorn is confident his playing return at the ripe old age of 41 won’t hamper the progression of his younger team-mates in the National Rugby Championship.

Thorn, a former dual-code international and World Cup winner with the All Blacks, is set to resume his playing career for Queensland Country in this year’s NRC while also serving as assistant coach. Warriors drop Lolohea

By DaviD Skipwith Tui Lolohea has been dropped for the Warriors crucial NRL clash against reigning premiers North Queensland on Saturday as they fight to reclaim a spot in the top eight.

Lolohea has paid the price for a forgettable outing in last Saturday’s 41-22 defeat to South Sydney, dropped from the squad entirely after his positional play at fullback was badly exposed by the kicking game of Rabbitohs halfback Adam Reynolds.

David Fusitu’a returns to the No1 jersey he last occupied against Canberra in round 20, with Blake Ayshford reclaiming the right centre position after filling a spot on the interchange bench for the last three games.

Coach Andrew McFadden explained Lolohea’s demotion will provide him time to regain some confidence while he has been named to play in his favoured position of five-eighth for the club’s Intrust Super Premiership side against the Mounties at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday.

“Tui has done a good job for us at fullback during the season but it’s a really difficult position to play, probably the most difficult in the game,” said McFadden.

Tui Lolohea has been demoted to the club’s Intrust side.

“He needs to get some confidence back in his game as well as having the chance to play in his preferred spot in the halves.

“At the same time David has shown his ability in all the positions in the outside backs.

“He’s been great on the wing and in the centres while he also brings a lot to the side at fullback.”

The rest of the starting line-up remains intact for the match at Townsville’s 1300Smiles Stadium, with rookie hooker Jazz Tevaga starting for the third straight week in the absence of the injured Issac Luke, and fellow dummyhalf Nathaniel Roache again included on the bench.

Proteas pace attack concerns Hesson New Zealand will have to blunt South Africa’s impressive pace attack if they are to claim their first ever series win over the Proteas, believes Black Caps coach Mike Hesson.

Fresh from a 2-0 series win over Zimbabwe on docile wickets, the batsmen can expect a significant change in pace and bounce when the first Test begins at Kingsmead in Durban on Friday night (NZT).

While the injured Morne Morkel will be missing from the Proteas line-up, New Zealand are still likely to face Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander and Kasigo Rabada.

Philander has a good history against New Zealand, taking 21 wickets during the Proteas tour of New Zealand in 2012 and following that up with a sevenwicket haul in the Newlands Test in early 2013.

“Although he missed much of last summer through injury, Philander was still a high-quality bowler,” said Hesson.

“We saw him at his best a few years ago when he just hit lovely lengths. We know he’s going to provide a challenge there, most likely with the new ball.”

Rabada is more of an unknown factor, given he’s a relative newcomer to Test cricket.

But he showed his class

“He’s got pace, he’s got bounce, he’s got plenty of skill,” noted Hesson.

“He’s fresh so he keeps running in at you hard.

“He’s someone we’re going to have to spend a bit of time on.

“We know he’s a quality bowler but when you’ve got Dale Steyn at the other end as well there’s no let off.”

Hesson has yet to decide whether his bowling line-up will feature two spinners to back up a pace attack of Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Neil Wagner, meaning either Ish Sodhi or Mitchell Santner could miss out.

The only other change sees prop James Gavet added to the bench after a two-game absence for his ninth appearance of the year.

“James has been pushing to come back into the team with his form for our ISP side,” McFadden explained.

“We’re looking for a lot more from our forwards this week.

“We need to do much better in the battle in the middle in what will be a really tough game for us.”

After consistently impressive defensive performances in nine straight games (six wins and three golden point losses), the Warriors found themselves down

31-6 at half-time against the Rabbitohs and despite an improved second-half showing could not overcome the visitors.

They now prepare for the trip to Townsville, one of the most challenging assignments in the game.

It hasn’t been made any easier by the fact the 2015 premiershipwinning Cowboys have lost their last three games and have won only six of their 10 matches since May to sit on 28 points, four outside the top four.

The Warriors beat the locals 20-16 in Townsville in 2014 and is their only win in Townsville in their last 10 matches there; their only match-up with the Cowboys this year has become critical to their finals hopes.

Overall the Warriors have an 18-17 win-loss record against the Cowboys but it’s 5-10 in Townsville.

Cricket on television Broadcasting officials are optimistic that New Zealand’s test series against South Africa will be shown live on television.

Social media murmurings in recent days had it that there was a risk the two-test rubber would not be screened in New Zealand.

However a Sky TV spokesperson said there is a positive view within the organisation that a deal will be done with South African authorities.

President shot dead The president of the Galle District Cricket Association has been assassinated, according to local media reports. Just a week after after the organisation hosted the second Test between Sri Lanka and Australia at their ground, Premasiri Halambage was shot in his car beside his young son.

Premasiri was was rushed to hospital but did not survive.

Premasiri was only appointed as the association’s president last month in controversial circumstances.

Taylor into top 10 Ross Taylor has moved into the top 10 of the International Cricket Council’s Test batting rankings. The 32-year-old New Zealand righthander has jumped five places to move to ninth after unbeaten knocks of 124 and 67 in the second Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. The Black Caps won the Test by 254 runs to clinch the two-match series 2-0. Racing legend Michael Schumacher is responding to treatment, according to his former Ferrari boss. Recent reports that the German sportsman’s condition is deteriorating appear to be false, says ex Ferrari chairman Luca Cordero di Montezelmo.
