Jobs may go at Aoraki Polytech BY DAISY HUDSON

Farewell to champs P19
The Tertiary Education Minister has given his strongest indication yet that some staff may lose their jobs if Aoraki Polytechnic merges with CPIT. However Steven Joyce says advice he has received from both institutions leads him to believe that if there were job losses, there would not be many. Following months of consultation and reviews, Aoraki and CPIT submitted a joint business case to Mr Joyce last week that proposes the creation of a new Canterbury-wide organisation. There was “some good stuff ” in the business case about strengthening regional provisions, which Mr Joyce said was particularly important for Mid Canterbury.
“The other thing that is of great interest to me is the focus on the needs of industry right across the Canterbury region,” he said. Maintaining Mid Canterbury’s strong level of primary industry training was one of those needs, he said. While the polytechnics have so far refused to be drawn on whether the merger will result in redundancies, Mr Joyce said he understood most positions would be retained during the transition. “Some of the support positions might change, because there would be one finance support centre and so on,” he said. “Both institutions have indicated that they expect most people to be retained during the change.”
A month-long consultation process on the proposal is set to begin this week. The merger would see Aoraki integrated into the legal structure of CPIT, which means Aoraki Polytechnic would be disestablished. Aoraki chief executive Alex Cabrera said the transformation period could take three to five years. While he said the recommendation was to continue to provide education with a physical presence throughout the Aoraki region, the future of Aoraki’s Ashburton campus has yet to be confirmed. Once all submissions have been received they will be considered by Mr Joyce before he makes his final decision, which is expected in October.
