If the weight of submissions carries the day then the Ashburton District is likely to be going top shelf when its new civic centre and library are built. The Ashburton District Council has wrapped up its community consultation on the project that ran over two public meetings, two open days and four weeks where the residents could make submissions. And when the people spoke, 83 per cent wanted either the $53 million or $45 million complex or a
combination of features from each. Four options were up for consideration ranging in price from $29 million to $53 million. In each it was the size, scope and facilities offered in the new library that changed according to project cost. The council’s preferred option was for a $45 million build, but most submitters did not agree. Of the 169 submissions received, 78 or 46 per cent told the council they wanted the most expensive build. Spend $53 million, build it once and build it right those submitters said. Another six, or
4 per cent wanted a hybrid option that added some, but not all of the features of the $53 million build to the $45 million option. With half of the submitters giving variations on the $53 million build their tick, the remainder were almost overwhelmingly in favour of building a $45 million facility.
