Ashburton’s new top cop is on a mission to make locals feel safe, with town-hall meetings and safer roads on his to-do list. Senior Sergeant Philip Dean stepped into the role of sub area commander for Mid Canterbury yesterday, bringing 25 years of policing experience and the simple goal to “create safety for the community”. Dean originally hails from Auckland and has previously worked as a tactics manag-
er, a community services manager and, for the past two-and-half years, as the Canterbury Highway Patrol manager. While he is new to working in Ashburton, he said it seems like everyone in the world has a tie to this town and he is excited to be here and getting to know the community. High up on his list of goals is safer roads for the district.
