The 25-year-old Christchurch man who died following a crash at the Mountain Thunder motorcycle event in Methven on Saturday, has been named as Ruaraidh McLeod. A police spokesperson said the matter is now before the Coroner and no further information would be released at this time. The tragedy occurred at 12.50pm with the motorcyclist dying at the scene after initially suffering critical injuries in
the crash. In a statement posted to the Mountain Thunder website, Methven Lions president, Richard Watson, said it was with regret that they confirmed the fatal accident involving a rider. “All remaining races were cancelled,” he said. “Methven Lions would like to offer their sincere condolences to the family of the bereaved man.” He said they were co-operating fully with the Christchurch Police Serious Crash Unit and directed further inquiries to Christchurch Police.

Police extended their sympathy to his family and friends at this sad time and said McLeod’s family had requested privacy. The Dubliner Mountain Thunder is an annual motorcycle street race held in the town centre of Methven every Easter Saturday, involving racers from across New Zealand. The race’s official website says it is hosted by the Methven Lions Club who join with Classic Action Motorcycle Sport (CAMS) from Christchurch to stage the event.
