Thrillers in first round P24
Mt Hutt Ski Area closed on a high note yesterday, following what has been the best snow year at the skifield this century. Skiers have continued to flock to the ski area throughout October, which was the biggest ski year in terms of visitor numbers since 2008. Almost six metres of snow fell on Mt Hutt throughout the winter, resulting in the ski base reaching a massive 3.8 metres. In the base area the depth remains at 2.5 metres, and there is still skiing on outer field runs such as the Top of Towers, South Face and Virgin Mile. The snow will not go to waste, with an Olympic training camp beginning on the
mountain today, and plans to open for guests on Christmas Eve. Manager James McKenzie said it had been the most snow this century, and had made for a “cracker” of a season. It had also brought challenges, and road clearing costs were up at least $50,000 to $60,000. Snow grooming costs were also up, however, snowmaking costs were down. There had been about one extra week of closed days compared to last year, mainly due to snowfall events. The injury rate was down about 50 per cent on last year, and Westpac airlifts also down, by about 35 per cent. “It’s great to see all the safety initiatives we have been introducing are starting to take effect,” McKenzie said.
Mt Hutt ski instructor Greg Overall took the selfie (above) that sums up ski season 2017. It shows him in pristine powder, down past the International run. The huge amount of snow which fell throughout the winter kept the mountain looking like a white wonderland, with wall to wall skiing and riding for guests. “Clean lines all the way,” said Overall yesterday, as he recalled that amazing ski run in August. “I think this was the best powder I’ve had in 12 years working here,” he added.
