Three aircraft on a food relief mission to earthquake-stricken Kaikoura headed out of Ashburton Airport yesterday beginning what could be the start of an ongoing support link. The mercy flights were the brainchild of Ashburton pilot Terry Hewitt who decided to build on the district’s relief service Trev’s Barbecue, established in the days after Canterbury’s February earthquake. This was established by Jane and Trevor Hurley and saw teams of volunteers man barbecues and ferry donated food and clothing to Christchurch over many weeks. When Hewitt contacted him and suggested re-birthing the Canterbury relief service, albeit by air, Hurley had no hesitation in agreeing. “He said he had the plane and he had two others with planes and they wanted to start taking stuff up today,” Hurley said.
When the barbecue service was launched there was an outpouring of support from the Ashburton District in both cash and goods and Hurley anticipates this will be repeated for Kaikoura. While the pilots chased grants for aviation fuel (about $200 per plane, per trip) Hurley was on the phone, setting up donation depots at Countdown and New World and digging into his own bank account to fund goods for the first mercy flights. “We’ve got $3000 worth of meat, vegetables, sanitary products and toiletries on the way and they’ll be flying up to three times a day with similar loads,” Hurley said. A refrigerated container and a second container will hold goods at the airport between flights. Ashburton Aviation Museum members have become official carriers of donated goods from supermarket to the airport. Flight clearance has been organised
with Kaikoura Airport where a storage container has been set up in a hangar and goods will be ferried into Kaikoura by 4WD vehicles where they will be distributed. The relief project has been given the thumbs up by Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel who encourages people to show their support for Kaikoura. “The people of Ashburton District are known for their generosity and we know full well how difficult it is in the early days after the earthquakes. “Trevor is doing a brilliant job of rallying around just making things happen to get help to those most in need,” she said. People wanting to donate to help Kaikoura’s earthquake victims can deposit money in the Trev’s Barbecue Kaikoura Relief Fund or they can leave goods at either supermarket. The Westpac bank account is administered by Croys. Donations should be made to bank account: 03 0835 0023227 000.
